MOVED BY JESUS. LOVING PEOPLE. SERVING ALL.

Our mission is to create a grace-filled environment in which Christ transforms lives.

TRAVEL TO THE HOLY LAND Since childhood, I have always loved traveling! When my father would travel around the state and country going to games and meetings, I looked forward to joining him as often as possible. And SENIOR PASTOR he always Todd Salzwedel tried to make an effort to include my sister and I in those experiences. While he worked hard not to spoil us with material items, he always looked forward to providing every opportunity for experiences that might provide perspective and learning.

economy of God! For those reasons and others, it is such a joy for me to get to share the experience of traveling in the Holy Land together with you! The relationships that are strengthened, the stories that we hold in common, and the broadened understanding of our faith and where we fit in it are all potential benefits that we might realize together!

By the time you are reading this article, dozens of you will have registered to embark with me on a pilgrimage I must admit, while I greatly enjoyed as we walk “the the experiences afforded me fifth gospel”, because of my father, it wasn’t until Olive tree at Gethsemane that is over the Holy Land! I got older that I truly appreciated 2000 years old meaning it was present Unlike any trip just how important they were to when Jesus prayed there. that I have ever my development and expanding taken, our journey worldview. Whether it was taking in the Holy Land provides the opportunity for in the sights and sounds of inner-city a truly transformative experience that can playgrounds or the hospitality of down-home forever shape your faith. Almost unanimously, folk, I was being exposed to cultures and folks whom I’ve traveled with in the past state people in a way that my peers simply weren’t. they can never read Scripture the same way. I’m convinced that one of the many positive The stories come alive as we have pictures effects such experiences had on me was a (mental and literal!) that give us reference deep desire to immerse myself in the lives of for what we are reading. But more than that, others. I want to learn from others about their taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the priorities and way of life. I want to gain a area help us imagine what it might have been better understanding of the context from which like for Jesus as he ministered along the shores of the Galilee. The journeys of Jesus and the people view the world around them. And in disciples to and from Jerusalem (and beyond) doing so, somehow, I think I gain a better February 2021 | The Window 1 understanding of myself and my place in the (continued on page 2)

(continued from page 1) have greater impact as we walk and observe the geography of that relatively small piece of real estate. There is so much I can share, but it simply isn’t the same as experiencing it in person! While I recognize that this won’t be possible for everyone, I would encourage those that are praying about going (as well as those who have already registered) to graciously be prepared to share your experiences and encounters when we return! Prior to our departing on September 20, I will offer several classes that all are welcome to attend. In those classes, I will address the history, the faith impact, and the political diversity of Israel. We’ll also offer tips and answer questions about traveling together. And upon our return, I, and hopefully others, will be happy to retrace our steps together, sharing pictures and stories! If you have questions and are interested in registering, please feel free to contact me, tsalzwedel@fumc.com or Jeanine, jaustin@fumc.com. We can assist you through the process and hopefully address any concerns you might have. You can also visit or visit fumc.com/ israel-trip. In the meantime, please be in prayer for our pilgrims as we prepare for this journey of a lifetime! Grace and Peace! Pastor Todd

Dear Church Family, Believers observe Lent in many ways: prayer, repentance, sacrificial giving, Shera Atkinson self-denial, Minister of Spiritual Formation and or other Congregational Care spiritual disciplines. Just as Jesus prepared for ministry by spending 40 days in the desert, we mirror his journey of preparation in our own Lenten travels. Our travels are prepared and powered by Jesus, who has poured His Spirit upon us and has prepared our work before the world began. Throughout the centuries, Christians have practiced the season of Lent in many ways. The choices you make about your preparation can be your own, suited to your individual needs. With that in mind, may I make several suggestions? Prayer. As Christians, we all agree that prayer deepens our relationship with God. We are commanded to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and taking time to pray throughout the next several weeks leading up to Easter

is an important first step. Set aside time each day for intentional prayer. Repentance. Jesus told His disciples that His kingdom was at hand, so repentance was required (Mark 1:15). We cannot expect to come into His presence if we embrace a lifestyle of sin, nor can we grow in faith without His forgiveness. Sin separates us from God and its penalty was paid by Jesus on the cross. Bible Reading. Jesus resisted Satan’s temptations by remembering that “man does not live on bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). A season of focused Bible reading replenishes our souls and fills us with His word. Giving. Christ’s generous sacrifice requires that we, as His followers, are generous, as well. Offering our financial and material resources reminds us we aren’t the owners of all we have, but stewards put in charge for our lifetime. These suggestions are by no means exhaustive, but may provide a framework for you to consider. Let’s not allow our busy schedules to impede our opportunity for growth during Lent, for Lent provides a path to a deeper, more precious walk with Him. Soli Deo Gloria, Shera

While most of us are happy to see 2020 behind us, there is good gleaned from the problems of shut downs and isolation. The isolation and distancing resulted in new ways of doing ministry that will continue to be incorporated in future ministries. Classrooms 106 and 107 in the CLC have been equipped with large TV’s and a 360 camera that will enable classes to be offered both virtually as well as in person. To reserve the classroom when using this technology, please contact Shera Atkinson, satkinson@fumc.com. Thank you to Tom Prather for his assistance with this project!

2020 Missions Recap

Family Promise

300 Masks distributed to those in need

Our church will partner with St. Luke’s for 2021 to provide meals for Family Promise. Since the pandemic no volunteers are allowed to stay with the families and meals are delivered. To maintain safety protocols, Family Promise only has two families at a time in their program. Meals can be: • home cooked • ordered and delivered from a restaurant • gift cards to restaurants can be given to FP staff I’m asking if your Sunday School class would be responsible for providing the meal five times during this year. You can cook or just use class funds to buy food. Again, volunteers are not needed to go and stay with the families. You would be responsible only for providing the food for one evening meal five times during the year. St. Luke’s needs help on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The scheduled weeks are in February, April, July, September, and November. As before you would receive information about the families the week before so you would know

how many people you would be feeding. If you think your class would like to help only once or twice instead of five times, that would be okay. Any help is appreciated. This is a good way for our church to resume a ministry that we helped start in Lubbock over 20 years ago. Please let your class know about this opportunity and let me know if you’d like to be included. EVERLIVING

There are several ways to leave legacy gifts to FUMC but only the Everliving Church Trust (ELCT) is an endowment where gifts are added to a permanent fund and generate ongoing funds in perpetuity. Funds in the permanent ELCT endowment are invested by FUMC’s Investments Committee, and the earnings (dividends, interest, royalties, etc.) from the endowment are provided to the FUMC Trustees annually to be used for non-routine maintenance and replacement costs related to the FUMC facilities. Legacy gifts, honorary gifts, and memorial gifts are major sources of funds to this endowment.

Because you gave, the ELCT was able to help pay for over $600,000 worth of repairs and upgrades during the past five years, including:

• Upgrade the security system cameras, sensors, and alarm, and install new security system DVR

• Renovate the narthex and library restrooms, including ADA compliance • Paint walls in Children’s 2nd floor area • Replace the protective floor covering (tarps) for the Gym floor when used for large event seating/dining • Purchase tile for future library restroom renovation • Sound system upgrades in all Worship areas, and add live video streaming options in the CLC • Carpet for 1st floor including Children’s area

• Completion of Sanctuary and Chapel painting and plaster

• Install blinds in the Children’s areas

• Make multiple repairs to and replacements of heating, cooling and hot water system units

• Refurbish doors in the Education Building and Sanctuary

• Replace lights in Sanctuary and choir loft

• Reseal cracks around the Sanctuary • Resurfacing of the parking lot

• Replace the ice machine in the CLC

• Trim trees on church property

• Purchase a storage unit for First Youth A/V equipment

• And more!

• Upgrade the audio and video equipment in the CLC Worship Room

in your estate plan and are not mutually exclusive. Estate plans and wills are not just for the very wealthy but for all individuals in this era of extended life spans and self-directed individual retirement accounts (IRA, 401k, 403b, etc.). Wills should be developed early and updated as life changing events (marriage, births, deaths, retirements, etc.) or other circumstances change. IRA and Life Insurance Beneficiary forms should be reviewed and updated as well. For more information on ELCT legacy giving, memorial gifts, or gifts to reduce current tax liabilities, please see the connection information below or call FUMC and request Jeanine Austin, administrative assistant assigned to the ELCT, mail you a printed copy of this information for you to discuss with your family and advisors.

Where can I find more information? More information can be found at: fumc.com/elct, or email ELCT@fumc.com and request a personal contact, or connect via the QR Code below.

Your legacy gifts should reflect your passions and priorities during your earthly life. Family, church, and other worthy causes can all be included

Our church facilities are far more than a place for us to congregate on Sunday mornings for worship, to celebrate new beginnings through weddings, to nurture our youth through baptisms, confirmations and children and youth ministries, or to hold services for those who have passed. While all of these worship activities are a vital part of what we do as a church, our many and varied missions as people of God extend beyond the walls of FUMC. To fulfill those missions, our facilities must serve both as a gathering place for worship as well as a home base from which we launch our activities that carry God’s word into the community. We’ve seen how capital campaigns like Greater Things fund major facility projects, and we know that routine facility needs such as light bulb replacement, carpet cleaning and plumbing repairs are addressed through the church’s annual operating budget. But for the repairs and other maintenance needs that fall in between, the Everliving Church Trust (the “ELCT”) is the safety net that steps in to help meet those “in between” needs of our church facilities – and those needs can be significant. Contributions to the permanent endowment of the ELCT create an ongoing legacy of love for the benefit of future generations. 4 ebruary 2021 | The Window Ben FLock – Everliving Church Trust, Chair

CHURCH TRUST

The Everliving Church Trust (ELCT) is a tremendous benefit to FUMC, one that hopefully will be substantial for many years to come. A simple concept, monies donated to the trust are invested and earnings are used to assist church facility needs. All of the assistance must be used for building maintenance and upgrades, including repairs, replacements and updates that are not addressed in normal operating budgets. The high cost of maintaining our beautiful building would be much more difficult without the ELCT and I am a firm believer that we must maintain this building annually to prevent its deterioration. Please consider memorials, donations, and legacy gifts to help sustain this great cause. Terry Dane Many changes in ways to communicate God’s word have occurred since the early 1980s when the FUMC-LBK’s Everliving Church Trust (ELCT) was created. These include the public’s access to cell phones (1983), the worldwide web (internet) services (1989), public email servers such as AOL (1992), “smart” phones which stream both live and recorded audio and video events (2007), as well as digital microphones and speaker systems. The list of innovations, and related obsolescence of previous methods, continues annually into infinity in addition to the normal building upkeep of our church home. FUMC-LBK’s leaders of the 1980s knew each time a dollar was spent from the annual operating budget for facility infrastructure, it was a dollar unavailable for the current programs and ministries of the church. Although they could not foretell nor dictate exactly what church programs and ministries would be needed in the future, they could see ongoing facility and equipment costs were inevitable and increasing in cost annually. Hence on faith they gave the original ELCT endowment dollars, and subsequent FUMC-LBK members have continued to provide additional donations to the ELCT as legacy gifts, memorials, or to honor an occasion or person. In the 21st century the ELCT endowment’s earnings allow the annual FUMC-LBK operating budgets to focus on developing/implementing programs for TODAY’s needs and audiences while the ELCT provides more than $100,000 annually toward facility infrastructure costs. A gift to the ELCT, no matter how large or small, is a gift to accomplish the mission of our church now and in the future. Diane Gillit My husband, Phillip, and I are lifelong Methodists and have been members of FUMC since 1988. We first became aware of the ELCT when one of Phillip’s elderly clients left her estate to the trust. At that point, the importance of preserving the church became a reality for us, that its history, meaning to the community and a beacon to God’s word for the people of Lubbock and Methodism is truly something worthy of being maintained. Tricia Hays I am grateful for the fact that “forward thinking” leadership within FUMC created and put in place the Everliving Church Trust. This Trust provides for, and insures into the future, the monies that are needed and necessary to provide for the upkeep and maintenance of our beautiful facility. This is accomplished without ongoing budget requirements, or emergency monetary infusions. when such needs come about. It simply allows FUMC to be “proactive” as opposed to “reactive”. It is a great tool for FUMC to have and use for the benefit of every member. Barry Johnston Legacy gifts provide a stimulus and revitalization for ministry into future generations. Charles and I look forward to our grandchildren, Ellis Corinne Key and John William Key, and Charlotte Wilkerson growing spiritually at FUMC. Ellis, John William and Charlotte are 4th generation members of FUMC, and gifts to the ELCT have made this possible. ELCT donors create a stewardship that allows FUMC to support and sustain the ministries of the church. Paula Key February 2021 | The Window

Search Under Way for New Assistant Organist Many people have inquired why Matt Johnston has not appeared at Sunday’s worship services recently. They also may wonder why his name is no longer listed as a service participant or as a staff member With deep regret, I inform you that Matt resigned the assistant organist position as of November 30, 2020. In his short time in Texas, he had grown to love the ongoing task as our new organ neared completion, and he looked forward to making music on our magnificent instrument, with the choirs, and on the bells.

We are very sorry for his decision and wish him and his family all the best in God’s guidance. Therefore, in these early days of 2021, we are resuming the search for a new assistant organist and assistant director of traditional music ministries. We appreciate your patience and your kind support, and please know that I always welcome your prayers for the search. Dr. Seung-Won Cho Director of Traditional Music Ministries
