What’s Inside

MID YEAR BOOSTER We started the year with a new tag line that centers and unites us as a church…

Page 02

“Moved by Jesus. Loving People. Serving All.”

Fall Reveal

I can easily point to places and ways where we already were living into this tag line in ways that are significant. One of those was happening as I wrote this… Family Promise. Our Missions Ministry Team has kept our church connected to this joint effort across the community. One or two families at a time enter weeks of support, training, care, and assistance to take steps out of homelessness and into a more secure set of circumstances.

Page 06 Middle School Mission Trip

SENIOR PASTOR

Page 08 The Bahamas Mission Trip

When we sponsor these families, volunteers from raig urry across our congregation take food, offer support, serve, visit, and meet their needs. This is one example of how Jesus’ appeal to us in Matthew 25 to meet human need for “the least of these” is our impetus to love and service.

Pressing question: what other forms do we as a church need to add so we live even more into “Moved by Jesus. Loving People. Serving All”?

Page 09 Chancel Choir

As we enter August and last half of 2019, let’s be in prayer about expanding our stories of how we are “Moved by Jesus. Loving People. Serving All!” See you in worship! Pastor Craig

THE BENEFITS OF A HEALTHY CORE

Shera Atkinson Minister of Spiritual Formation and Congregational Care

Many of our movements originate from our core. A healthy core helps to strengthen and stabilize the body, enhances posture, improves balance, enriches performance, and protects against injury. There is a correlation between a strong spiritual core and health as well. Often, our daily decisions, actions and conversations originate from our spiritual core. A healthy spiritual core strengthens faith, guards against falling, improves decision making, regulates our relationships, and enhances our posture of worship.

A healthy spiritual core is developed through a focus on Christian Story, Christian Belief, Christian Formation and Christian Application. This four-pronged approach to core development emphasizes:

1. Knowing the Christian story through studying the Bible as a united story of faith 2. Understanding, the basic confessions of the Christian faith 3. Growing through support, accountability, and corporate worship within the Christian community 4. Applying the Christian story, faith and formation through community to engage in missional living. This fall we encourage you to join in worship, Sunday school, Bible study, service and community as we seek to develop a healthy core. Bible studies will focus on either Christian story, belief or application and new opportunities for service and community will be available. Let’s make a commitment to developing a healthy core! Soli Deo Gloria Shera

TREASURED TIMES

Treasured Times will resume in September. If you have someone in your family, a friend or acquaintance in need of respite while taking care of someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s, please tell them about Treasured Times. This ministry began four years ago and has been a blessing to those caring for someone 24/7. Our church offers this ministry each Wednesday, September through May, from 9:30 to 1:30. Caregivers leave their loved one with us so they can have some well-deserved free time. We have the opportunity to offer their loved ones’ music, seated exercise, memory matters (remembering the past), arts and crafts, and games. We’ve found that our participants enjoy being in this social situation. It is a win-win situation for caregiver and participant.

If you know of someone in need of this ministry, please call Challa Goedeke, 806.799.7421 or GeorgeAnn Benson, 806.786.8015. We are now accepting applications. There is no charge to families for this program and they do not have to be a member of FUMC. If you have a heart for helping others, we are looking for volunteers to help with this ministry. Each participant must have a friend (volunteer) with them at all times. We also need other volunteers to help with arrival and dismissal as well as floaters to do what is needed. Please email Challa Goedeke, cjgoedeke@hotmail. com or call 806.799.7421 or email GeorgeAnn Benson, bensonga@aol. com or call 806.786.8015. – Challa Goedeke

DENVER

MIDDLE SCHOOL MISSION TRIP

One activity the middle school group participated in on their recent mission trip, was walking around downtown Denver in groups and pretending to be homeless. They had to find resources that homeless people have access to.

Ella Barkley served at the Food Bank of the Rockies along with 20 other middle school students from First LBK.

June was our Middle School Mission trip and Sara Lattimore said it was a blessing to serve alongside 21 middle school students and watch them be the hands and feet of Christ to the people and communities in Denver, CO. She said, “They served with joy and enthusiasm, sorting frozen meats at the food bank, cleaning up a soda spill at the food bank, and meeting people who work to help the homeless population in Denver.” 6

August 2019 | The Window

Ella Barkley and her group found a laundry truck parked on the side of the street where a lot of homeless people hang out. Ella said she introduced herself to the man who was running the truck. He showed her around the truck and how it worked. He showed her how they get water for the laundry. As they were talking, she asked him about his story. He had once been homeless in downtown Denver, but now has a job working for the non-profit laundry truck. According to Ella, he was taught how to manage his feelings and now has money and a place to live. Ella said her favorite part of that day was talking to the “laundry guy.” According to https://www. bayaudenterprises.org/communityindividual-services/laundry-truck/, in the Spring of 2016, Bayaud Enterprises retired a commercial truck that was used in their paper shredding business. Rather than sell the truck, which was in good condition, they saw an opportunity to create a mobile laundry truck. TLT’s goals in this project are three-fold:

1. To alleviate the cost, health, and safety issues associated with laundry services for people experiencing extreme poverty and/ or homelessness. 2. To provide job training for people experiencing extreme poverty and/ or homelessness (0-30% AMI). The Laundry Truck will also provide an opportunity for small business development through the generation of earned income. 3. To educate and do outreach using the Laundry Truck as a point of contact to build trust with individuals who experience severe persistent mental illness and homelessness. The mission of Bayaud Enterprises: Our mission is to create Hope, Opportunity and Choice, with work as the means through which people with disabilities and other barriers to employment can more fully participate in the mainstream of life. Their various programs include paid job training opportunities for individuals who qualify for their services. They also provide full-time employment for 180 people, of whom 75% have severe disabilities including physical, mental and emotional.

– Karen Flores Director of Communications

The Middle School Mission Trip Team thanks you for your prayers, as we were on our trip to Colorado. It was transformative and so much fun! 21 Middle Schoolers tackled 7,375 pounds of frozen food at the Food Bank at the Rockies- feeding over 5,000 families in need in the Denver community. The mission team experienced God’s character in so many ways, August 2019 | Thethrough Windowhiking 7 including exploring His creation and whitewater rafting.

THE BAHAMAS

FAMILY MISSION TRIP

Our group worked hard roofing a house and building and painting benches.

July was our Family Mission Trip to Eleuthera, The Bahamas. When we think of The Bahamas, we think of cruise ships, resorts, vacation, shopping and beaches. While this is true in some places, there is another side to life on the islands. Food and necessities are much more expensive than in the states. The minimum wage is around $5 an hour and a quart of milk is $13. The Bahamian dollar is equal to the US dollar. Poverty is real and on non-tourist islands like Eleuthera access to goods and services is limited. To see a doctor often8 means a flight to another island and August 2019 | The Window

additional expenses. Materials for roofing we found were double the cost of those in the states. All of this means there are great needs. Bahamas Methodist Habitat started on the Islands after Hurricane Andrew as a response to the devastation. They have since stayed trying to repair and strengthen homes to prepare for future storms. Our team of 12 people from four families, ranging in age 6 years old to around 50, worked on a roof that was collapsing and leaked in every rainstorm. The family was kind and generous towards our team supporting our work by lending a hand or a snack. It was humbling to receive their gifts. We witnessed the Bahamas 46th year of Independence celebration. This young country is building its identity and its systems.

God showed up to our team and opened our eyes to the reality of life on an island. It is complicated and can be isolating. Community is a valuable thing on the island. Families and friends rally around each other sharing what they have. We joined in the community as we alongside local individuals showed the love of Christ through our actions to a family in need of a safe and dry place to call home.

We left Eleuthera changed and wondering when we might get to return. Some lessons we learned: Looking deeper than the preconceived ideas reveals the truth about the struggle. Serving as a family is super special. Everyone no matter their age or size can do something. Community is a necessity. Love and hospitality is a gift worth giving and receiving. – Sara Lattimore Director of Missions & Outreach

CHANCEL CHOIR PERFORMS PRE-SHOW AT TEXAS MUSICAL

The Chancel Choir performed two musical selections at the Pioneer Amphitheater before the “Texas” musical in Palo Duro Canyon on Saturday, July 13. The choir sang “America, the Beautiful” and a spiritual entitled, “Ain’a that Good News” by William Dawson in front of over 2,000 people before the show began. This opportunity provided a chance to witness to a large group of people

and also provided great exposure for FUMC. In addition, it allowed Chancel Choir members the opportunity for Christian fellowship and community building. Participating members: Michelle Alexander, Sandy Anderson, Clint, Jeannie, and Rachel Barrick; Pitts and Cynthia Davis; Dale and Linda Duhan; Challa Goedeke, Sue Lewis, Cheryl Sevigny, Bryan, Ross and

Carol-Anne Smitherman; Brian Spruill, David, Tamara, Jackson, Turner, and Priscilla Speer; Jeri Strange, and David Warren.
