“For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!”

Romans 5:10 (NIV)

ANGRY BIRDS — ANGER MANAGEMENT

Our culture is so consumed by anger that we play games and watch TV shows and movies that are centered on anger. In fact, Hollywood produced a movie with the name:Anger Management in 2003, and a TV series with the same title from 2012–2014.

One of the most popular app games,Angry Birds, was around from 2013-2019 and is still around in movie formats today.

Google “Anger Management” and you will find a plethora of apps, seminars and books that promise help and hope to those who’s anger seems unmanageable.

Have you noticed how many angry people you seem to run into almost every day? Seems like they are everywhere because they really are everywhere. I can’t say that percentage wise this has ever changed sinceAdam and Eve were removed from the Garden of Eden.

People living in only their old sinful nature are angry! They are angry at other people. They are angry at the circumstances of their lives. They are angry at themselves. They are angry at God.

Gordon MacDonald, former pastor, editor at Leadership Journal, and former presidential advisor, tells this story.

ANigerian woman who is a physician at a great teaching hospital in the United States came out of the crowd to say something kind about the lecture I had just given. She introduced herself using anAmerican name.

“What’s yourAfrican name?” I asked.

She repeated it, several syllables long with a musical sound to it.

“What does the name mean?” I asked.

She answered, “It means ‘Child who takes the anger away.’”

When I asked why she would have been given this name, she said, “My parents had been forbidden by their parents to marry. But they loved each other so much that they defied the family opinions and married anyway.

“For several years they were ostracized from both their families. Then my mother became pregnant with me.And when the grandparents held me in their arms for the first time, the walls of hostility came down.

“I became the one who swept the anger away. And that’s the name my mother and father gave me.”

It occurred to me that her name would be a suitable one for Jesus.

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

~ Romans 5:1 (NIV) ~

The great news in all this: we don’t have to be angry people anymore. Jesus changed that scenario for us. Rather than anger toward any and everyone including God Jesus brings peace. You can know that peace today.

Blessings on your week.As you prepare for this Sunday, why not do a little heart checkup? See if you find any pockets of anger, and if you do, commit them to Jesus the Peace Giver. I do hope to see you in worship this coming Sunday. This week we are beginning my new sermon series I am calling BETWEEN SUNDAYS. It will be reflecting on what we, as Christians, do during the week while we are not in church. We will start this Sunday with READ ON.
