“Love (agapē) does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law.”
Romans 13:10 (NLT)
WORD STUDY: LOVE / STORGE
Definition: Storgē (στοργή) is a noun meaning “natural affection,” often referring to family love, such as the love of parents for children, or siblings for one another. In classical Greek, it conveyed the instinctive bond of kinship. Though the exact noun storgē does not appear in the New Testament, related compound forms do appear, showing that this dimension of love is part of the Christian life.
Biblical Usage: The use of storgē in Scripture comes through two compound words: philostorgos (“devoted, tenderly affectionate”) and astorgos (“without natural affection”).
“Love one another with brotherly affection (philostorgos). Outdo one another in showing honor.”
~ Romans 12:10 (ESV) ~
“For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless (astorgos), unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control…”
~ 2 Timothy 3:2–3 (ESV) ~
In Romans, Paul urges believers to display philostorgos, which is a family-like devotion toward one another in the church. In 2 Timothy, the absence of this affection (astorgos) is listed among the marks of a corrupted generation.
Storgē reminds us that God’s vision of love includes the ordinary, natural bonds of family, friends, and community. In Christ, these bonds are extended beyond bloodlines to the family of faith, where believers are called to love one another with deep affection. This word shows that love is not only sacrificial (agapē), and affectionate (phileō), it also familial, rooted in loyalty, devotion, and belonging.
It is overwhelmingly apparent that as those who love God and strive to be followers of Jesus every day our mandate is to love people. That may sound simplistic but actually doing love is so much more complicated and difficult than it is to just read and talk about it.
There are several reasons that this may be our experience when trying to do love.
● We may feel like we are unworthy of God’s love ourselves so how can we show God’s love to others.
● We may not exactly like the person in front of us at that moment so we feel like a hypocrite offering to serve them.

● The person in front of us may not seem to really want us to show God’s love to them. They may reject every effort we attempt.
I could go on with the excuses however we are ultimately commanded to love others as God has loved us with devoted, tender affection doing no wrong or harm and sacrificially putting needs of the person stranding in front of us before our own desires.
Will we always get this love thing right? No. We will all make mistakes and fail at times. However, even then, what may appear to be failure sometimes isn’t failure at all. During those days when measurable results remain elusive be steadfast. Do not give in to despair. God is using you in ways you cannot see.
Blessings on your week. Let me challenge you to do something to serve someone at least one time this week. It will change your life. I do hope to see you in worship this coming Sunday. This week we are continuing my sermon series I am calling BETWEEN SUNDAYS. I will be reflecting on what we, as Christians, do during the week while we are not in church. We will discover a third thing we do between Sundays: ATYOUR SERVICE.
