“But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?”
1 John 3:17 (ESV)
GIVING SUMMARY: WHAT CHRISTIAN LEADERS HAVE SAID
The Bible teaches that giving is an essential part of the Christian life, rooted in God’s generosity toward us. Giving is not merely an obligation but an act of worship, faith, and love. It reflects God’s character and demonstrates our trust in His provision. The Scriptures emphasize that true giving is done cheerfully, sacrificially, and with a heart focused on God’s kingdom rather than personal gain. Through giving, believers participate in God’s work and experience the joy of generosity, which leads to spiritual and eternal rewards.
God’s Generosity as the Foundation
John Wesley (Sermon: The Use of Money)
“Gain all you can, save all you can, give all you can.”
A believer’s financial stewardship should always include generous giving.
RandyAlcorn (The Treasure Principle)
“God prospers me not to raise my standard of living, but to raise my standard of giving.”
We are blessed to be a blessing to others.
Charles Spurgeon
The Spiritual Reward of Generosity
“Giving is true loving. To love abundantly is to give abundantly.”
Giving is an expression of love and faith.
Jim Elliot
“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
Giving is an investment in eternity.
Trusting God in Generosity
Corrie ten Boom (Tramp for the Lord)
“The measure of a life, after all, is not its duration, but its donation.”
A generous life is a meaningful life.
C.S. Lewis (Mere Christianity)
“I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare.”
Giving should be sacrificial, reflecting trust in God.
IN SUMMARY. The Bible teaches that giving is not just about finances but about living generously in every aspect of life. God calls believers to give freely, cheerfully, and sacrificially, trusting that He will provide for their needs. Christian leaders throughout history have affirmed that generosity is an act of faith, love, and eternal investment. True joy is found not in accumulating wealth but in using it to bless others and glorify God.
Blessings on your week. Take sometime this week to do a “Check Book Survey.” Use it to help determine if faith lines up with God’s priorities of giving. I do hope to see you in worship this coming Sunday. This week we are continuing my sermon series I am calling BETWEEN SUNDAYS. I will be reflecting on what we, as Christians, do during the week while we are not in church. We will discover a fourth thing we do between Sundays: THE GIVING LIFE.
