s we prepare to gather for worship at 9:00 and 11:15am this coming Sunday, our sermon theme is “When Does The Service Begin?” I think that is an appropriate and May 20 - George Wirth to preach important question for us to consider because we will be recognizing all of the Sunday School teachers and youth leaders for their ministries with our children, youth and adults during the past church year...and we will also be commissioning all those who are going on mission trips to Cuba, Jamaica, Brazil, Honduras, New Orleans, Joplin, Orlando and Cherry Log, GA. this coming summer. Our Old Testament text from Isaiah 6 reminds us that in the midst of worship, the prophet Isaiah was moved by the Holy Spirit to declare “Here am I Lord, send me!” And the New Testament lesson from Luke 22 reports that Jesus told all of His disciples at The Last Supper, “I am among you as one who serves”. So let’s join together this Sunday as we celebrate the opportunities we have to serve the Lord and so many others in so many places in ministry and mission, praising God and re-affirming our commitment, saying “Here am I Lord, send me!” And please invite your family and friends to come on along to worship, Christian education and fellowship here at the corner of 16th and Peachtree Streets!

Faithfully yours,

George B. Wirth

T

his Sunday, May 27, we begin our summer schedule with communion in Winship Chapel at 8:15, sunday school at 9:00 and worship in the sanctuary at May 27 - Craig Goodrich to preach 10:15. It is also the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend and a time to look back and remember all those who have given their lives in the service of our country. And finally, it is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost. That day described in the second chapter of “The Acts of the Apostles” when the disciples were all together in one place, a house in Jerusalem, when suddenly from heaven came the sound of a violent rushing wind and tongues of fire which rested on each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages. It is the dramatic scene portrayed in one of our southside Sanctuary windows. While we may not know the Spirit to move with such comparable drama in our time and our lives, we do believe “the Lord, the giver of life” as the Nicene Creed says. And we believe that the Spirit is present among us in a unique and powerful way when we celebrate Holy Communion, which we also call “the Lord’s Supper.” I invite you to worship this Sunday for our Pentecost communion. Let’s be all together in this place. The sermon is entitled, “The Place of the Spirit.”

Faithfully,

Craig
