t was King Ge o r g e t h e 6th of England who proclaimed to the British Empire as the dawn came up on 1939 – “I said to the man at the gate of the New Year: Give me a light that I may tread in the darkness,” but he replied to me “Go forth into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. And that shall be to you better than a light and safer than any known way.”

As we open the gate to the New Year 2013, I hope and pray, together with all of you in our “Family of Faith,” that the Lord will continue to lead us toward “the Light that shines in the darkness” (John 1) and shows us His will and His way.

We celebrate Epiphany Communion on Sunday, January 6 and the meditation is entitled “Follow the Star.” With the text from Matthew 2: 1-12 about the wise men coming to worship the Christ Child.

Then on Founders’ Sunday, January 13, we will focus on the history of First Presbyterian Church and I will preach the sermon “Never Have so Many Owed So Much to So Few.” So please come join us for worship, Christian Education, fellowship and service to others at the corner of 16th and Peachtree – and I encourage you to invite your family members and friends to join us!

RAINBOWS is a weekly support group program for children and youth who have experienced traumatic change such as divorce, abandonment, deployment of parent with the military, incarceration or death. E p i p h a n y S u n day Epiphany Sunday Festival Sundays at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta give us an opportunity to observe unique times on the Christian calendar. We recognized All Saints’ Sunday and Reformation Sunday this past fall, and we will celebrate Pentecost in May. January 6 is Epiphany Sunday.

Epiphany means manifestation. The manifestation at hand is that of God

in Christ. Specifically, it is the manifestation of Christ to the gentiles in the form of the magi (wise men) who visit Jesus. Our worship on that Sunday will include men dressed as the magi bringing gifts to the table. We will also have communion by intinction, when we come forward to take the bread and the cup.

Mark your calendars for January 17-21, 2013 as we celebrate our ministry to the city of Atlanta.

In New Testament Greek, the name means “meeting place,” and we are a vibrant, conversational class that discusses a variety of topics, including Bible, theology, current events, and arts. Most of us are thirty something, and many have young children.

The Bereans were critical thinkers who, with study, became believers. (Acts 17:10-12). This year our theme is “What is the Church?” It is the people who meet in God’s name, but also an institution, a place, the foundation of our culture, and much more. On January 6, we will join Jim Coil in Fifield for the Discussion of the Congregational Survey Results and Pastoral Transitions. On January 13, Dr. Patrick Graham will join us to discuss “The Rise of the Christian Church.” Please join us.

The Covenant Class examines an interesting combination of family and social issues, church history, theology and Bible lessons, all from the perspective of today’s family. Our lively discussions are led by members of the church staff and congregation. Our members are generally age 35-55, married, have children in elementary-college, and interact socially.

A laid-back, discussion-oriented class of couples, many in our thirties with young families.

We try to maintain diversity in our topics with a combination of Bible study, modern day religious and societal trends, parenting and family issues, movie and video lessons, guest speakers, etc.

Happy New Year! On January 6, we welcome you back to an all church forum led by the FPC transition team. During this time, we will hear summary of the congregational survey results as well as discuss any questions related to the upcoming pastoral transitions. All are welcome.

Join us for historically informed, biblically grounded conversations. As the new year starts we will continue to look at gender and identity, diving back into the biblical text to think about what it means to us to be men, women, and just plain people, in the body of Christ.

On the 6th, all classmates are encouraged to attend the discussion about the summary of the Congregational Survey led by the FPC transition team. And on the 13th, the annual Stewardship Breakfast will feature popular guest speaker, Reverend Joanna Adams.

Our class is designed for parents of kids pre-school~high school. We are an energetic group of 30–50 “somethings” who are seeking spiritual and practical guidance on our journey of faith.
