W
e all have stories to tell. In my family, there is the story of my great-grandparents sneaking out of their houses as teens, leaving in the middle August 21 - of the night to elope. Lindsay Armstrong to preach They stayed happily married for 60 years. There’s the story of my father-in-law coming out of retirement 3 times now, repeatedly starting, building, and then selling businesses. He’s now thinking again about retirement. We’ll believe it when we see it. There are stories of athletic feats, scary health crises, challenges with work, and friends who are always there. We all have stories; yet, what are the stories you tell about yourself? What is the story you are living into right now? What are the stories you tell yourself about your work, family, health, happiness, stability, friendships, or relationship with God? In John 5, there is a story being played out by the pool at Bethzatha. It’s a disempowering story that an unnamed man lived for thirtyeight years, and Jesus Christ strode into the middle of that old story in order to write a new story in that person’s life. Perhaps Christ is also inviting you into a more gospel-shaped story. During worship on Sunday, I look forward to exploring this together.

A
s we prepare for worship this coming Sunday, our sermon theme will be “Life Goes On.” Some of us consider that phrase with a pessimistic and despondent August 28 George Wirth to preach attitude, as did Edna St. Vincent Millay who wrote “Life must go on, but I forget just why”. Others of us, who hold fast to our faith in Jesus Christ, consider that phrase with a positive and hopeful point of view, as did Robert Frost who said “God seems to me to be someone who wants us to win.” Taking our texts from Psalm 30 and Revelation 22, we’ll explore the choice we all can make about which road to take as Christians who walk together in our journey of faith. I look forward to seeing you in the sanctuary at 10:15 and please invite and encourage your family and friends to come join us as well!
Faithfully yours,
George B. Wirth
