Loving none more than Christ and loving others as ourselves, we strive to reflect God’s love to all.

The secular writer Kurt Vonnegut wrote, If I should ever die, God forbid, let this be my epitaph: “The only proof he needed for the existence of God was music.” I have long been convinced that music offers the underlying rhythm of the universe and reflects the heartbeat of God. The words of the familiar hymn remind us that This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears, all nature sings and round me rings the music of the spheres. I believe that everything—from the howling wind to the crashing waters to the chirping birds and the whisper of dry leaves—represents parts in a great symphony that reveals God’s real community. We are all connected, in some way, by the sounds of the natural music of our world. Even the scientists have created large-scale “dishes” that, like a telescope, reach into the heavens and tap the music of the universe. At the root of this is God; and in the music, we really do experience the blessing of God’s heartbeat. God gifts individuals with extraordinary abilities of projecting what a piece of music will sound like. He places the music on a person’s heart in such a way that it has to be released and be heard. Benjamin Harlan has such a gift and has been a strategic part of worship throughout our world over the years he has practiced his art. His music tells a story, sets a mood, moves us closer to God, and offers us community in celebration and community in loss. Music is a universal language that overshadows our tendency to separate ourselves from the rest of the world when we feel pain. Music has helped begin relationships, guide courtship, inspire our souls and motivate us to serve.

(dpotter@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com) Last week, on Wednesday Night, our youth traveled away from the YAB and into other parts of First Baptist to do mission work! Each month, we have a Wednesday Night with a missions focus; and this month we wanted to serve the Reading Buddies Program and the FBC Food Closet. We love giving back to the community that helps us in so many ways; and we love serving the Lord with each of you. Thanks be to God for the chance to be Christ's hands and feet.

Financial Stewardship Giving 2018 Year-to-Date

October 7 - 13, 2018

IN HONOR OF Mrs. Nancy McKee The McCarley and Douglas Families CHRISTIAN SYMPATHY IS EXTENDED TO

Susan Elder and family in the death of her mother, Mrs. Joann Fuller.

During the Composer Weekend, we have the opportunity to see the composer up close and personal, as he and I have a conversation during the sermon time. You will be blessed, amazed, surprised, delighted and moved by his wit, wisdom and commitment to the musical art. You will experience some familiar music and be able to put a face with the music. Maybe you will hear the voice of the Spirit as you hear the music and words. I firmly believe that connecting the people with the composer offers God an unobstructed channel to share the music of His heart through the composer to the worshiper.

PLEASE VOLUNTEER FOR VIP IN THE YAB OCTOBER 14 - 21 Our Missions Committee needs volunteers for VIP October 14 - 21. If you can bring supper one night, stay during part of the day Saturday or Sunday, or spend one night, email David Keske (krisodavid3@aol.com).

This Sunday, at 8:30 and 11:00 A.M., we will be invited to hear, see and understand the music as it impacts our souls. After you hear the composer’s testimony, you will never hear the music the same again. I hope you will be here and encourage your neighbors and friends to come and be a part of this incredible weekend.

INFORMATION MEETING FOR DANUBE CRUISE PARTICPANTS AND FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE TRIP WILL BE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21, AT 3:45 PM IN ROOM 111.

Johann Sebastian Bach wrote, I play the notes as they are written, but it is God who makes the music. God will be present and ready to bless. Will you be there to receive the blessing and be encouraged in your faith? Your Pastor, Jimmy KOART SCHOLAR Jay Branch is from Tifton, Georgia. He sings tenor and is a senior vocal performance major in the Schwob School of Music of Columbus State University. This is Jay’s first year as a Koart Scholar.

The Columbus Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and the choirs of First Baptist, St. Luke United Methodist, St. Thomas Episcopal, and Trinity Episcopal invite you to join them for a musical celebration of the seasons of the church year Sunday, October 21, at 5 PM in the sanctuary of First Baptist.

CITY MINISTRY (secondstoryfbc@gmail.com) [Brandon Strozier]

Last Thursday, September 27, Second Story had a Gospel Night at our Reclaimed worship service. Following that service, we had a mixer/party that was 1980s themed. We had a whole heap of young adults worshiping Christ with their whole hearts, dressed in bright ‘80s style clothing. In fact, check out the photos of Reclaimed on the cover of this issue of The Guide! This event reminded me of the uniqueness of Second Story and how much fun we are allowed to have within our relationship with God as it is lived out here. I'm thankful we have a place where people can understand the seriousness of what God has called us to do as well as the joy we are allowed to experience within the freedom that a life in Christ offers!

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY (pthompson@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

In our first week of October, we begin with Philippians 4:11b-13. In this letter, Paul is writing to the church at Philippi to help them understand more about what it means to follow Jesus. Paul shares how they can be content and even have joy regardless of their situation in life—something Paul learned from experience. His example in the face of difficulty is a lesson we can all learn. Bottom Line: God can help you be okay no matter what. We can’t promise kids that when they follow Jesus everything in their life will work out just the way they want it to; however, we can promise them that even if life isn’t okay, God can help them be content with their circumstances. We pray that no matter what kids are facing, they’ll learn to trust that God will give them what they need to get through.

MISSIONS MINISTRY (hhooper@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

The Missions Committee invites you to our “Night of Missions” in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, October 14, at 5 PM. You will have the opportunity to hear from each of our missions teams that served this summer: Colombia (youth), Bulgaria (Second Story), Guatemala, Honduras Vision, and Youth Passport. Your First Baptist missionaries will share what God taught them through their service. Desserts will be served! In addition, we have been asked to participate in a diaper drive for Sound Choices Pregnancy Center. Please bring a package of diapers to this event or drop them off in the church office. Let’s help make a change locally! #firstonmission #lovewhereyoulive

EDUCATION MINISTRY (mdouglas@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

PLACE is a process that helps Christians find their best place of service within the church and community and aid in the understanding of God’s unique design for them in ministry. Talk with some of our members who have already participated in a PLACE workshop and see how being involved could help you as well. Our next PLACE class is scheduled for Tuesday, October 23, 9 AM to 4 PM. Please contact me for more information. Blessings.

MUSIC MINISTRY (kfranklin@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

This past Sunday I sat in a hospital room with my mother and watched our worship service online. What a wonderful ministry for folks who are homebound, traveling, or in the hospital. The quality of the service and work that happens behind the scenes are amazing. Thanks to Jimmy, Laverne, Janie Lee, and Myron for filling in for me in my absence and to the TV crew for their work.
