PLACE is an intentional process to connect church members into purpose-driven ministry including self discovery, individualized ministry coaching and tracking from workshop training to ministry placement. Through the PLACE process, people discover that God has created and gifted them with a unique capacity to serve others.

Participants learn that God created them with unique personalities, spiritual gifts, abilities, passions and experiences. Discovering God's purpose and plan for their lives helps members find their PLACE of service within the body of Christ.

PLACE is a Biblically based and highly effective way of doing church.

Our next PLACE workshop is January 27 (6:00-9:00 PM) - January 28 (9:00-noon). To make a reservation or for more information, please contact Myron Douglas as soon as possible, as space is limited.

Loving none more than Christ and loving others as ourselves, we strive to reflect God’s love to all.

to the ministry of Columbus’ First Baptist Church Family Deacon

This year is off to a grand start. Starting it with a sense of gratitude and determined purpose has laid a wonderful foundation for all that the Lord will do through us. This year, we complete our 194th year as a Church Family in this community. As we enter our 195th year, it is good to have a handle on where we have been and a knowledge of what lies ahead. The best way to remember, celebrate, dream, and move ahead is to PARTY! We have a group at First Baptist tasked with planning this fun event.

First Baptist was born on February 14, 1829. No one in the group could begin to imagine what the future would hold. They trusted God as they embarked on this grand experience of planting a Baptist church in the newly chartered city of Columbus on the Chattahoochee River, on the border of the frontier. First Baptist fulfilled part of a grand plan to bring morality, education, arts, spirituality, family, and mission into this new community. We have been a partner in everything good that Columbus has done over these years, as well as being a refuge for loving ministry; and we have been a part of the vision, innovation, and progress. Let us celebrate what God has done in this community and the partnership that we have had with the Lord since 1829. So, in the new tradition forged in the past couple of decades, Save the Date! Sunday, February 12, for our party. Details will follow. I am excited just thinking about it, and I hope you are also.

I want to introduce/present to you our two newest staff members. Nico Moyer is the new City Minister at Second Story. He began January 1 and has already hit the ground running. Nico brings a unique skillset to this position. Not only does he have a background as an Army Ranger, but after his retirement from the military (at a very young age) he worked as an intern at Second Story with Brandon Strozier. He began attending Second Story while he was in the military and was faithfully active in the program. He entered the Servant Leadership Program at Columbus State University and soon was asked to be the graduate assistant in the Master’s program. He distinguished himself in that role, and then taught the curriculum. We could have looked far and wide and not found one as qualified as this young man. He is married to Clare, who grew up in our youth group. They both have been involved in Victory Mission, Sunday School at First Baptist, and been a part of mission trips as well. Join me in welcoming Nico to this important ministry with your prayers, love, and support.

Laura Haygood became Director of Victory Mission January 1. Laura is a native of Columbus and has a strong background in missions and ministry. She cut her teeth as a staffer with Young Life; and that is where she met her future husband, Rev. Thad Haygood (yes, Thad is both my dear friend and the pastor of St. Luke United Methodist Church). While the Haygoods served in Albany, Laura organized and coordinated the missions ministry at First United Methodist. Sensing the need among some of the most economically challenged and seeing the devastation from the major tornados that hit the Albany area, she worked through First Methodist’s mission program and organized a weekly dinner for the needy/homeless/displaced in the community. She involved other churches in the community, and First Methodist hosted the dinners for many years. Laura brings to her new position a real sense of call, a love for the Lord, a love for people, and a heart to help better their lives. She has the experience, compassion and creativity to move forward with the opportunities we have at Victory Mission. She will work with Dr. Howie Hooper in this ministry. We are blessed to have a benefactor who so believes in this ministry that the position is funded for the first two years. This is already an exciting year. I cannot wait to see what the Lord does next!

Your Pastor, Jimmy

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

(pthompson@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

This week we head to Luke 4:1-13 and find that Jesus has gone to the desert to be tested. The devil shows up and twists what Jesus knows about God and Scripture; but Jesus is prepared to face these challenges head-on. Jesus leverages the truth from Scripture to overcome the devil’s temptations. Bottom line: remembering what’s true can help us make the wise choice. It’s important for kids to remember that if they have a big question about what to do, the first place they should look is the Bible. We pray children will start to understand the importance of the Bible in their lives.

EDUCATION MINISTRY

(mdouglas@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

Romans 12:4-8 encourages, reminds and even convicts us that we are each and all gifted with talents that are to be used to serve the church, which is each other. I hope and pray you have explored and discovered your gifts so that you can apply them. Lumière, in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, sings "There is nothing so unnerving as a servant who's not serving…." If you are still trying to discover your gifts, I encourage you to take part in the PLACE workshop, January 27-28. Come and discern how God has gifted you. Blessings.

YOUTH MINISTRY

(dpotter@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

On our winter retreat, we studied parables and considered two specifically: the pearl hidden in the field and the mustard seed. Within those parables, our youth had an opportunity to (re)learn about the great value God places on each of their lives AND their commission to help plant the tiniest of seeds that spread God’s love and light throughout the world. Our youth were invited to rewrite the shorter parable, bringing new depth and light to the discussion. Some described the kingdom of heaven like home, available and safe to all. It truly was a moving moment for youth and chaperons alike; and it was made possible by your generous support of all kinds. Thank you for this great opportunity to retreat and to come back ready to be the hands and feet of Christ.

PS - Wednesday, January 25, will be Bring A Parent Night to WNL. We’ll discuss what you need to know about and to participate in our summer mission activities. WNL begins at 6:30, and the meeting will begin at 7:00.

MISSIONS MINISTRY

(hhooper@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

Victory Mission is thrilled that we partnered with the Springer Opera House’s First Act Program that brought a production of Going on a Bearhunt to VM! The First Act Program is a touring initiative from the Springer that presents a live, interactive, and educational performance geared to families with children. Our Victory Mission family and volunteers enjoyed this wonderful production, which is one way we minister to families, by helping them learn social and emotional skills such as conflict resolution, appropriate expression of emotions, and self-soothing. Thanks for your partnership, Springer Opera House!

Last week I had the honor of welcoming you to First Baptist for our Sunday services. We look forward to resuming our weekly events as well. We are excited to bring back Life Groups, Bible study with Mr. Ben Smith, frisbee, Reclaimed Worship Service and, as always, college hour on Sunday mornings with Mrs. Janice Hudson. We ask that you pray for all returning students and those headed away from us for the semester; may all their transitions be smooth.
