I had planned a different article; but I will publish it next time, and I think you will enjoy it. How’s that for a teaser?

A great deal changed last night when Tim Thompson, our Church Administrator of almost 22 years, announced his resignation in order to assume a position with a company near us. Needless to say, this is a bittersweet moment. I have not known a single day of service at First Baptist Church without having Tim at my side. He was administrator when I arrived, and I hoped we would finish our time at First Baptist at the same time. The Lord had other things in mind.

I have always appreciated the good that Tim has accomplished and wanted the best for him and his family. With grandchildren and family, this new position will afford him more manageable hours and a new opportunity. I am happy for him, but very sad for all of us. We have benefitted from Tim’s organizational skills, his intense desire to get the job done, his tip-of-the-tongue knowledge of all things First Baptist, his focus on accomplishing the task, his straight-forward approach, and his unique style of leadership.

From where I stand, I can tell you that it is most difficult to put into words all Tim has done for this Church Family. He has managed the physical plant, the properties, the internal staff structure, the internal administrative structure, the financial office, the custodial staff, the kitchen staff, the contracts, and many other things.

Tim’s diligent spirit and willingness to get things done as quickly as possible has been both blessing and challenge. I have always told him that I had to be careful what I asked for and had to be very clear about whether it was an idea to think about or a task to be done. On many occasions I would throw out an idea, only to learn that 5 minutes after we talked it had been done. It was impossible to stay ahead of him.

Tim is also one of those unique individuals who loathes delegation since he can just do it himself. That way he knew it would be done right! Tim would climb into the storied attic of the sanctuary and change the light bulbs. He would crawl into places where no mortal had ventured to go before and fix something in a moment that would have required a service team to come and probably a couple of weeks to get done.

Tim has managed the Lord’s work well, never been afraid of work, dreamed strategically, and accomplished so much for the Lord and the church. He and his family have made great sacrifices for this fellowship. His contributions are incredible, and I can tell you from personal experience that Tim has made it possible for me to do what I have been able to do as pastor because I did not have to worry about things being set up, fixed, put in place, ordered, or implemented. That is a luxury I will miss.

Above everything else, Tim has been a friend. I am grateful for all he has meant to our Church Family. There is not a person here who has not benefitted from his leadership. First Baptist is in far better shape because he has been here. I am grateful to God that He brought Tim Thompson into our lives, and personally, that I have had the privilege of working with this good man. Two preachers’ kids working together is an interesting chemistry, but it has worked for the nearly 20 years we have been together.

I know that you join me in saying, Tim, we love you, appreciate all you have done, and will always have a place in our hearts for you. May God bless you on your new adventure. We pray it will be everything you hope it will be and that God’s grace will always be on you and your family. If it is not all that you want it to be . . . . We love you.

Your Pastor, Jimmy

MISSIONS MINISTRY

(hhooper@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

We have all watched with shock and sorrow the scenes of devastation from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Turkey and Syria. As of today, more than 35,000 lives have been lost, and that number continues to grow. Join me in praying for those who have been affected and in helping with recovery efforts by giving to the First Baptist Disaster Relief fund. Earmark donations by using “earthquake.” Thank you, First Baptist, for always being so generous in helping those in need and being the hands and feet of Christ. #heart for the world #heartformissions #lovewhereyoulive

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

(pthompson@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

Remember, God is most important. Kids might be able to tell you how important God is in their lives, but they might not understand how to show respect to God. It’s great to sing songs to God at church, but we can make God important in our everyday lives, too. This will be a great week to talk about how we can remember God is most important by spending time learning about God in the Bible, praying to God about what’s happening in our lives, and making God a priority in our conversations with others. There are all sorts of ways kids can show how much God means to them.

YOUTH MINISTRY

(dpotter@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

What a special couple of weeks we’ve had as a church and as a youth family. First, we celebrated the Souper Bowl and you showed up in a big way for the youth and for our Food Closet. That Sunday morning alone, we raised more than $1700, and the donations continue to come in. How incredible is that? Then, we loved partying like Jesus and adding our own “Hallelujah” at our birthday celebration. You may have noticed some interestingly dressed individuals in the front two rows of Sunday’s service - including a robot and a hazmat suit. Keep your eyes on our youth social media channel to see video proof as to why they were dressed that way. Thanks be to God for these joyous moments. CITY MINISTRY

What an amazing time it was “Partying like Jesus” with our church family last Sunday. We continued the party in 11:00 worship and throughout the evening at Second Story, as we watched the Super Bowl. This week continues with 25 hours worth of events for our students and young adults. We were excited to meet on campus for the Collegiate Day of Prayer on Tuesday, February 14, and will finish the week off strong with a River Dragons game this Saturday. An additional blessing this week was that my mother-in-law, Katherine Maddox, joined the First Baptist Church family, and we could not be more excited. I also had the opportunity to meet with the deacons to discuss Second Story’s current health and future plans. Thank you for that opportunity. I look forward to sharing many of those updates with you soon, as well! Love and blessings.

EDUCATION MINISTRY

(mdouglas@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

I read recently that those things we do for God are holy things. My first thought went to all forms of ministry: giving people attention and providing food, medical care, a place to live or even to stay for a while. We might think of teaching, preaching or leading in worship, also great ministries; but the writer continued. He discussed simple tasks, such as holding a door, ushering, helping in the nursery, offering directions. Are you getting the picture? Any of these things, done in God’s name, are holy offerings. See what you are doing that might be considered ministry. Then look around and see what other things you could add that would also be considered holy tasks. We should not take anything for granted and should offer thanks to those around us who are doing holy things. May God guide each of us and inspire us to do more of these. Blessings.

MUSIC MINISTRY

(kfranklin@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

After 11:00 worship this Sunday, our new arm of Koart Academy for K-5th graders will give a presentation. We will teach about flute, clarinet, saxophone, and brass, all sized for young players. What a great opportunity for children to learn to play an instrument in a Christian environment! If you and your children plan to participate, please call the First Baptist office (706.322.34468).
