Heavy-duty Household Goods, Creative Workshops, Office Space & Everything In-between

MOLLY PATTERSON LAUNCHED PERCH 313 ON INSTAGRAM IN NOVEMBER 2019. AT THE TIME, SHE WANTED NOTHING MORE THAN TO SHARE HER LOVE FOR VINTAGE RUGS WITH THE WORLD.

“My mom was an antique dealer,” Patterson recalled and, as a result, she was introduced to these sturdy floor coverings. “Now, as a mom and a pet owner, I love them. They’re easy to clean and take care of, and they last forever.”

Perch 313 offers a wide array of rugs in all shapes and sizes, as well as cleaning tips for those who purchase them. The company’s website, which went live in early 2020, states, “Vintage rugs sold by Perch 313 have all been selected due to their high quality, and have been handmade, hand-knotted with wool on wool or wool on cotton. Wool is highly resistant to wear and contains lanolin which is a natural stain repellent.”

Shortly after Perch’s product line went live, Patterson, with the help of her husband and retail manager Julie La Framboise, began renting storefronts in Ferndale and Birmingham, looking for a perfect physical space. Eventually, the company would settle into its permanent home in Berkley.

“I grew up in a small town,” Patterson said, finding Berkley to be the perfect fit. “I love the homey, small-town feel here. I also love all of the street parking!”

TODAY, PERCH 313 STILL SELLS ITS VINTAGE RUGS, but its mission of providing durable, long-lasting products has expanded significantly. Shoppers can now find other one-of-a-kind items, most of which are created by women-owned or family-owned local businesses.

“We hunt for things that have the same story as the rugs,” Patterson explained. “They’re well-made and you’ll still have them five, ten, fifteen years down the road. They won’t just end up in a landfill.”

Some of the items that have made their way into the store include wooden spoons created by a women-owned company who sends proceeds to causes overseas, Michigan-made soaps and candles, and kitchen towels from the oldest linen factory in Europe, located in Belgium.

“We also have candles that come in glasses which can be used as barware, and we just started selling Madmen Mcm barware, which is classy and has been around for years,” Patterson said, adding, “We want to provide things that make homes cozier. Our overall goal is to present a warm and happy spot where people can shop and feel at home. In turn, they can take that same feeling with them.”

NOT ONLY DOES PERCH 313 OFFER RARE FINDS, but La Framboise coordinates creative, in-store workshops several times each month.

“We currently have a local artist coming in who teaches water-colors, an alchemist who helps people mix their own perfumes, and macramé classes. We’re also always open to new ideas,” Patterson said.

Perch also offers office space for rent to interior designers and other community members who are looking to host meetings with their clients and customers, and a portion of its product revenue is donated to Berkley Schools’ music, choir, and theater programs.

Patterson is hoping to do much more for the school programs this year, and to continue to give back to the community. She is also quick to shout out other thriving businesses in the area.

“MAY I ADD WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT BERKLEY IS OUR NEIGHBORS, CASA AMADO,” Patterson added. “We have a wonderful working relationship with them. The different businesses in Berkley are all very supportive of each other.”
