Yad Ezra

SINCE 1990, THE MISSION OF THE YAD EZRA FOOD BANK HAS BEEN TO SUPPLY “SUPPLEMENTAL KOSHER FOOD, NECESSITIES, AND ENHANCEMENTS OF HOLIDAY AND LIFE CYCLE EVENTS TO THOSE IN NEED IN THE JEWISH COMMUNITY.”
Through the efforts of their staff, caring volunteers, and generous donors, more than one million pounds of free groceries are given each year to families in need.
As the organization carries out its vision of providing a premium food pantry, it upholds certain core values in its daily operations. Along with treating its patrons with dignity and respect, the staff and volunteers continuously reach out to the community to increase involvement and learn about best practices for helping those who are struggling. At the same time, they also seek ways to improve how they deliver their current services.
TO FOSTER SUSTAINABILITY, THE ORGANIZATION HAS INSTITUTED THE GIVING GARDENS program, which strives to teach others about healthy farm-to-table diets and offers resources to show others how to produce their own foods. The members of the Giving Gardens’ Club consist of both Yad Ezra clients and community volunteers. To provide more fresh food options for the clients, the Club members supervise an onsite greenhouse and several gardens, including a garden of one acre on nearby property owned by Our Lady of La Salette Church Berkley.
Presently, there are numerous hands-on volunteer opportunities available at Yad Ezra. Volunteers are needed to sort, shelve, and stock food in the warehouse. Others are needed to assist with client intakes, delivering food, and working in the gardens. Volunteers who can speak Russian are in high demand. Time commitments will vary based on requirements.
Located at 2850 W. Eleven Mile Rd. in Berkley, Yad Ezra’s office hours are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. To learn about client pick-up times, subscribe to the newsletter, or to get more information, visit yadezra.org.
