Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Roadmap
The Renewable Energy Roadmap for Nigeria was developed in partnership with Nigeria’s Energy Commission and provides a long-term perspective to the goals set out in IRENA’s World Energy Transitions Outlook. The report offers a renewables-focused energy pathway towards the development of a more sustainable and cleaner national energy system.
Renewable Energy Resources
The report identifies how Nigeria’s renewable energy resources can be scaled up and integrated to create a sustainable energy mix both on- and off-grid, while also meeting the growing energy required to support
the country’s development. The document offers an analysis of the energy quantities and types currently used in all sectors of the economy and predicts how this may evolve in two different scenarios up to 2050.
The Role of Hydropower
Hydropower will likely be key to a balanced, centralised power system in Nigeria, as it offers the flexibility needed to mitigate the variability of solar power provision. The energy efficiency potential of hydropower could help pivot the country’s economy towards high-innovation sectors using energy-efficient technologies and domestic energy renewables.

Adoption of Biofuels and EVs
The Renewable Energy Roadmap for Nigeria suggests that the faster adoption of electric vehicles and biofuels, combined with a more significant role for public transportation, will help to sustainably meet the country’s growing transportation demands.
A large-scale reform of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was recently initiated in Nigeria, making health insurance mandatory for all Nigerians.
