Provision in Nigeria
FemiAlongside its social protection partners, the government of Nigeria has taken significant steps in recent years towards establishing a social protection floor for the country’s citizens.
The government and its social partners have identified several key priorities, including the establishment of an age-appropriate and gender-sensitive framework designed to ensure a minimum floor of social protection for all Nigerian citizens and facilitate lives lived with dignity. There is also the aim to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty via jobs and social protection, to strengthen the 36-state social protection system and extend social protection to the informal economy.
Reducing out-of-pocket expenditure on health and facilitating the Vulnerable Group Fund (VGF) to extend health protection to vulnerable Nigerians are also important goals of the government and its social partners.
A large-scale reform of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was recently initiated in Nigeria, making health insurance mandatory for all Nigerians. As part of this reform the VGF was also established, aiming to provide health insurance coverage for those without the capacity to pay for this protection.
