Access to Clean Energy Dramatically Expanded
In December 2023 the World Bank approved the DARES (Nigeria Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-Up) project, which aims to provide more than 17.5 million Nigerians with improved or new access to renewable energy.
The DARES project will enable Nigeria’s Federal Government to finance and coordinate all off-grid electrification efforts. It will also allow states to access the technical assistance required to develop policy frameworks and institutional capacity for rooftop solar.
The project will use a range of innovative financing solutions to increase clean energy provision in Nigeria and will be spearheaded by the private sector.
The DARES project will enable Nigeria’s Federal Government to finance and coordinate all off-grid electrification efforts. It will also allow states to access the technical assistance required to develop policy frameworks and institutional capacity for rooftop solar. By building on the World Bank-financed Nigeria Electrification Project’s gender-related initiatives, designed provide women-led MSMEs and disadvantaged female-led households with access to electricity, the new programme will prioritise gender and inclusion.
The DARES project will support Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to close its energy access gap and drive its transition towards efficient, sustainable and economically viable electric supply. It’s also proof of what is achievable via effective and innovative partnerships and collaborations between the private sector, development partners and the government.
