OUR HEARING CHECK AT INTERVISION EXPERT

Approximately 10% of the Spanish population have hearing loss, which equates to about 4,7 million people. The most common cause of hearing loss is age and exposure to noise; however other factors such as infection, genetics, trauma, wax and disease also contribute to hearing difficulties.

Here at InterVision Expert Audiologia our resident Audiologist will not only check your hearing but will also check the health of your ears. By using the most up to date technology they will look for any external or internal causes for the hearing problem, such as a blocked ear canal with a plaque of wax, or any inflammation caused by infection or irritation. A referral to the medical centre is then recommended, and a further hearing test once earwax is removed or infection/ inflammation is resolved.

With tympanometry, they will check the eardrum function, i.e. an acoustic measurement of the eardrum and conduction bones, to distinguish whether sensory or transmission hearing loss is in the inner or middle ear.

Following these checks, the Audiologists will perform an audiometry test and logoaudiometry which makes an analysis of the levels of hearing ability and measures the level of understanding. By introducing different frequencies and intensities they can create a graph. From this graph, they can determine if there is any hearing loss, and which frequency it is. After all the information is collected, the Audiologist will discuss whether hearing aids can help, and which type is most suitable for where the hearing loss is occurring. Once hearing aids are purchased, there will be FREE follow-up appointments to make any further adjustments, and an annual routine hearing check.

Important Information: The Law Is Changing – V-16 Warning Light to Become Mandatory: A Safer, Smarter Way to Signal a Breakdown

Jennifer Cunningham Insurance wants to keep our clients informed and safe on the road.

Breaking down on the road is never ideal, but placing a warning triangle in today’s traffic conditions can put you at serious risk. In Spain, current rules require drivers to walk at least 50 metres behind their vehicle on a motorway to place a triangle. On single carriageways, it’s double the distance: 50 metres in front and behind. This can mean walking up to 200 metres on foot, often next to fastmoving traffic, in bad weather, or low visibility.

In 2019, 58 pedestrians died on Spain’s high-capacity roads, many after exiting their vehicles to place or retrieve a triangle. Clearly, a safer alternative is needed.

That’s why Spain’s traffic authority (DGT) is promoting the V-16 hazard warning light, a modern, more secure replacement for traditional warning triangles.

What Is the V-16?

The V-16 is a compact, battery-powered beacon that flashes a bright amber light in all directions. It’s visible from up to 1,000 metres, even in fog, rain, or darkness. Best of all, you can activate and place it on the roof of your car without exiting the vehicle, helping keep you safe in dangerous roadside situations.

Many V-16 models are now connected devices, meaning they also send your vehicle’s location to DGT 3.0, Spain’s national traffic alert system. Other drivers receive this information in real time through mobile apps, GPS systems, or in-car displays, allowing them to slow down or change lanes well in advance.

A Smart, Inclusive Solution

The V-16 is part of Spain’s Road Safety Strategy 2030, which aims to reduce road deaths by 50%. It works with all vehicles, regardless of age or model, and is ideal for people with reduced mobility who may struggle to walk to place a triangle.

New Law from 1st January 2026

From 1st January 2026, it will be mandatory by law to use an approved, connected V-16 warning light instead of the traditional triangle. To comply, the device must include a non-removable built-in SIM card that communicates directly with DGT 3.0, ensuring your location is transmitted automatically in the event of a breakdown.

To help our clients prepare, we have a list of governmentrecommended V-16 devices that meet the legal requirements.

When Should You Switch?

While the law comes into full effect in January 2026, early adoption is strongly recommended. Not only will it keep you safer, but it also ensures you're prepared well ahead of the deadline.

At Jennifer Cunningham Insurance, your safety is our priority. We are committed to keeping our clients informed about changes that matter.

It is now that time of year when a bit of normality returns to our lives – a lot of tourists have returned to their country of residence, making driving and parking easier for us all, parents and children are preparing for the return to school, and the silly heat is finally starting to become more bearable.

There is a lot of preparation going on at the moment for the fast approaching hen and stag dos of our son and daughter in law. The girls are hitting Benidorm for a few messy nights, while the boys are off on a golfing weekend - sounds pretty reserved and sensible but I'm sure that won't be the case. I predict a few days recovery will be needed for both parties afterwards.

MARTIAN ROCKS ON EARTH

I write this column a few weeks before publication, and one of the news stories at the moment is about a sizeable rock from Mars being sold at auction for a great deal of money. I've no intention of going into the politics of this sort of thing, but the sale itself does raise some interesting questions for the person in the street.

Firstly, how do we know that the rock is from Mars? This is an interesting question and is also very easy to answer properly. It all boils down to taking a sample of the rock and cutting or drilling into it in a vacuum chamber. This releases a tiny amount of the gases trapped in the rock, a sort of molecular fingerprint of the place where the rock came from. We then compare this sample with the results of the air samples from the Viking spacecraft that landed on Mars nearly 50 years ago and lo and behold, they match each other. Definitive proof of the origin of the rock.

Are there many rocks from Mars on Earth? No there aren't, not many at all. Somewhere around 400 out of the 72.000 meteorites that have been catalogued originated on Mars. The latest one is a whopping 25 kilograms in weight, it's the biggest found so far which is why it's worth millions.

Now for the biggest question, how do all these rocks get from Mars to Earth. There are two ways that this happened, either by an impact from something smacking into Mars or by volcanic eruption spitting rocks into space. Mars has a much weaker gravity field than we do on Earth so it's relatively easy for this to occur. As you might imagine, the rock types are quite different so they get special names (shergottites, nakhalites etc if you want to look them up). Once the rocks have reached space they will orbit around randomly until one day they meet with the Earth and come plummeting down to the ground, awaiting someone to make a fortune from them.

Last bit, how old are these rocks? Well, the Earth is about 4.5 billion years old and the oldest Martian meteorite is about 4 billion years old. The youngest one is only a few million years old so these rocks cover quite a range in ages. A part of the work going on around the world is to understand just what the history of the planets actually is, and study of the rocks that come to us from space forms a very important part of this, it's science in action.

That's all for this month, enjoy the night sky.

Recent Change in the Law Allows British People to Donate Blood in Spain

In July 2025, Spain announced a significant update to its blood donation eligibility rules. Authorities have officially lifted the longstanding ban that prevented individuals who lived in the United Kingdom between 1980 and 1996 - or received blood transfusions there - from donating blood in Spain. This exclusion had been in place due to concerns about the transmission of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD), associated with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), or "mad cow disease."

The change was enacted following a favourable ruling from the Scientific Committee for Transfusion Safety on 18 July 2025. Based on updated scientific insights and enhanced blood screening methods, the risk of disease transmission has been deemed extremely low. The Spanish Ministry of Health has since adopted the recommendations to expand the pool of eligible donors.

This new law means that British nationals-and any residents of Spain who previously studied, lived, or received a transfusion in the UK during the 1980-1996 period-are once again eligible to donate blood, provided they meet all standard health criteria. The decision aims to boost Spain’s blood supply and aligns Spanish regulation with similar changes already implemented in other countries.

As of August 2025, eligible individuals should check with their regional blood bank or official platforms to schedule a donation appointment.

Pets in Spain need your help to support pets and vets

During the first half of this year vets and their associates, pet owners and supporters organised and attended large scale demonstrations in all the major cities in Spain to demand amendments to new laws, introduced in January, and a return to the previous veterinary regime where treatment and medications were based on a vets recommendations training and experience. The restraints imposed on vets since the introduction of the new laws is the restriction and use of antibiotics and other medications for animals and forbidding the use of any drug classified for human use, even though the price of veterinary-only drugs is much more expensive than a more widely used human classified drug available at farmacias, and previously available to clients for their pets.

A prime example of this dilemma is a medicine named alopurinol, used to treat the lethal canine disease leishmaniasis, rare in people but common in dogs and one of the biggest causes of dog mortality in Mediterranean countries. However, alopurinol is classified for human use and not for dogs, so vets are not now allowed to prescribe it for a dog, only veterinary class drugs that are up to 20 times more expensive.

There are other restraints on vets since January regarding the uses of serum (saline solution), and the prescribing of drugs must be in accordance with outdated leaflets that accompany them, with some not updated for up to 15 years despite recent scientific studies, the administering of a drug from the vet’s own stock was only for the day of consultation, any subsequent days treatment of the drug had to be via a prescription and a full pack of the drug purchased from a farmacia, even though a pet may need just 2/3 tablets to complete the treatment! Thankfully, and as a direct result of the widespread protests and demonstrations, this one particular rule has been reverted by the law makers so that vets can now offer a full course of treatment using drugs from their stock without the need for their client to buy a full box from a farmacia.

Please click on the QR Code to go to the online petition in support of Pets & Vets. Almost 215,000 people have signed. The vital target is 500,000 to secure a complete reversion all the imposed restrictive laws.

Pets In Spain is an established animal welfare charity in Spain. Donations towards various animal rescue and welfare campaigns will be grateful received. Please visit our donations page on our website here: www.petsinspain.com.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERNCE BETWEEN PERMANENT AND NON-PERMANENT EXTENSIONS IN SPAIN.

Navigating Spanish property regulations hinges on understanding the difference between permanent and nonpermanent installations. This knowledge is key to grasping why seemingly straightforward light glazed extensions require major licenses, despite their apparent simplicity.

Non-permanent fixtures encompass installations or building work that can be moved intact, without extensive disassembly or demolition. Examples include light prefabricated dog kennels and parasols. Additionally, structures made from materials that naturally deteriorate over shorter periods, usually 5-10 years, fall under the non-permanent category.

In contrast, permanent fixtures are those that resist easy relocation or rapid decay. This includes glazed areas, aluminium roofs, and covered patios, intentionally designed for lasting integration. Material doesn’t dictate permanence; for example, both wooden and aluminium roofs are considered permanent. Conversely, an aluminium parasol with wheels is deemed nonpermanent by authorities.

Within Spain’s legal framework, any permanent extension, regardless of its material, demands a major license if it:

- Features a roof, expanding the property’s size and altering its exterior or semi-interior space.

- Adds rooms or introduces new uses to the property, even if detached.

The impact of permanent installations goes beyond the physical, extending to:

- Property Tax and Title Deed Alignment: As in the UK,

permanent installations can affect billed rates and misalign with property documents.

- Habitable Conditions: Spanish regulations mandate ventilation and natural light access, which enclosures can compromise.

- Legal Ramifications: Unauthorised permanent extensions may lead to fines or demolition orders, disrupting property transactions and devaluing assets.

Thankfully, a solution lies in obtaining a retrospective license, available through qualified Spanish architects. This step safeguards unlicensed extensions from objections, regardless of future legal changes.

Conditions for obtaining a Retrospective License remain consistent across regions.

- In Murcia, extensions must be at least 4 years old.

- In Almeria, building work must be over 6 years old.

- In Alicante, construction should have concluded before August 2010.

Once confirmed, Martinez de la Casa Architects streamlines the issuance process. The resulting certification, stamped by the Official College of Architects or Notarised, is delivered within 10 working days, ensuring compliance and protection.
