Welcome to InterVision Expert Ópticas in Spain!

Previously Specsavers Ópticas.

Where we continue to provide you with a complete and professional eye examination, and excellent customer service. All the same amazing staff are still here to help you in your eye test journey.

From 1st January this year Specsavers decided to remove their brand from Spain and some other countries due to different reasons starting with the result of Brexit. As part of the franchise agreement most of the products had to come from the UK, which meant delays, rising costs, and deliveries being held in customs very often. So, Specsavers and the franchisees decided to stop trading together and go independent. We were the country with the best Specsavers customer service worldwide and we will keep giving this fantastic service to the Spanish and Expat communities. With several languages being spoken in each store we are able help people from various nationalities.

Francisco Jurado has been an Optometrist for more than 25 years, and the current owner of three InterVision Expert Ópticas stores on the Costa Blanca in Guardamar, Torrevieja and La Zenia. He has put a lot of work in since January to bring the Opticians up to date with a brand-new selection of fashion frames, excellent quality lenses and coatings, and much more choice of top design varifocals, including Rodenstock and Pentax, to give the best vision possible. We still have plenty of offers for you matching Specsavers, 50% off varifocals and 2-4-1 being our most popular ones, as well as a wide selection of topquality frames in plenty of colours, shapes and sizes, and also a great range of designer frames.

Breaking news!

From 15th March 2025, we will have our Audiology Clinics ready to go. We will be able to offer a hearing test, and supply hearing aids to suit all budgets.

THE AIRCREW ASSOCIATION COSTA BLANCA

The association, formed in 1988, exists to foster comradeship amongst those who, having been awarded an official flying badge, have qualified to operate military aircraft and are serving or have served, as military aircrew in the armed forces of the United Kingdom or those nations which are allies of the United Kingdom or the Commonwealth. If you are interested in joining this popular association or would like to know more, please call the Secretary on 96 649 5228.

We are currently undergoing some home improvements to our garden and pool area, hoping it will all be done for the upcoming summer months. Although some of this work started a while ago, I am now determined to move forward and get it all completed. It will actually be a miracle if this happens but we can all dream!!

There are a few festivities this coming month with St Patrick's Day on the 17th and Mother's Day on Sunday 30th March. As in previous years, Cabo Roig will be hosting a massive parade for St Patrick's Day which always has a great turnout and great fun for all the family, however if you want to celebrate more locally there are quite a few venues partaking in this popular event.

We're off to Gibraltar this month for the official tying of the knot for our son and his future wife so very exciting times ahead. Only the immediate family are going so it will be a quiet affair yet I'm sure we will celebrate in style. The big ceremony will be happening later in the year so we also have that to still look forward to. Whilst in Gibraltar I fully intend to do some tourist sightseeing with a visit to the caves and of course we have to experience the apes. We're all just hoping for some nice weather while we are there to top off what is going to be truly magical few days way.

Until next time ….

THE MOON AND THE NIGHT SKY IN MARCH A GOOD TIME TO GET OUTSIDE AND LOOK UP

This year, March is a good month to enjoy the night sky, Mars, Jupiter and Orion are still easy to spot, and the new moon is terrific to observe. Although not observable at the moment, Saturn is doing something unusual.

I'll start with the Moon. From about the beginning of April the new Moon will be very low in the west and will be higher in the sky on each successive night. So, why do I say that it is terrific to observe when there's only a little bit showing? Most people who are new to astronomy assume that a full moon is best to look at, simply because you can see all of it. The problem with a full moon is that all the Sun’s light is going directly at the surface, there are few, if any shadows. A new Moon has the sunlight hitting it at an angle, this highlights all the surface features making them stand out so much more. You can see this effect for yourself by standing in front of a mirror in a dull or dark room with a torch. Shine the torch directly at your face, then move the torch to the side, so much more detail shows.

If you do get outside to do some moon watching, don't just look and think how pretty it is, take the chance to identify what you're looking at. There will be some famous seas and craters to find, and the south pole is well lit. The south pole is where many of the latest moon landers are headed because of the signs of water hidden there.

Both Mars and Jupiter are very easy to find in the west, Jupiter is a little lower in the sky and is the brighter of the two. If you have a small telescope this is a good time to get it out and find the vast cloud belts that circle Jupiter, you'll also see some of the four inner moons often called the Galilean moons, because Galileo was the first person to see them. If you look again the following night, you'll see how far they have moved as they circle this enormous planet. Why not try and identify each one? A few minutes with a book or the internet will help you tell them apart.

The constellation Orion I've mentioned many times before so I won't go on about it again, but why not take this last chance to look at it before it disappears from our view until the autumn.

I'll finish with Saturn, with its glorious ring system. It is too low in our sky to be visible to us until later in the year. When it reappears it will be unrecognisable to most people, the rings will seem to have disappeared. This is all part of the natural change in the viewing angle from our perspective and they'll reappear, just about, in 2026. You'll have to wait until 2032 before they are at a perfect angle again though.

7 SMART WAYS TO SAVE FUEL ON YOUR DAILY DRIVE FROM GENERALI EXPATRIATES

Did you know that burning just 1 litre of petrol produces roughly 2.3 kg of CO₂? The more fuel you consume, the more CO₂ is released into the atmosphere. Reducing fuel consumption not only saves money but also helps lower your environmental impact. Here are seven simple ways to help you save fuel on your daily journeys.

1. Plan your route. Before you set off, make sure you have a clear route planned and monitor traffic updates. Adding just 10 minutes to an hour-long drive can boost fuel consumption by up to 14%, not counting the time spent sitting in traffic. A little planning can go a long way towards saving fuel.

2. Check your tyre pressure. Underinflated tyres can cost you more at the pump. Just 0.5 bar below the recommended pressure can increase fuel consumption by 2% in urban areas and 4% on motorways. Underinflation also increases the risk of a blowout by up to 60% and reduces tyre life by around 15%. Keeping them properly inflated not only saves fuel but also increases your safety.

3. Carry only what you need. Every extra kilogram increases your fuel consumption. In fact, every additional 50 kg can raise your fuel consumption by almost 3%. By removing unnecessary items from your vehicle, you can improve fuel efficiency.

4. Maintain a consistent speed. Driving at a steady speed is one of the best ways to use less fuel. Try to accelerate gradually and ease off the accelerator early when you're slowing down. It can be tricky in city traffic, but it’s a simple way to save fuel.

5. Use higher gears to avoid over-revving. To get the most out of your engine, keep the rpm low by using higher gears. Petrol cars perform best at 2,000 to 2,500 rpm, while diesel vehicles perform best at 1,500 to 2,000 rpm. This strategy relaxes the engine and reduces unnecessary fuel consumption.

6. Turn off the engine during long stops. If you plan to be stationary for more than a minute, turn off the engine. Idling can waste 0.5–0.7 litres of fuel each hour. Many cars now automatically shut off the engine when you are not driving, saving fuel and lowering emissions even further.

7. Use your air conditioning wisely. Air conditioning can increase fuel consumption by 5% to 20%. However, driving with the windows down is not ideal either. For the most efficient driving, keep your windows closed and set the air conditioning to a comfortable 21–23°C.

Of course, the most effective way to save fuel is to switch to an electric vehicle. Electric vehicles lower CO₂ emissions significantly and offer long-term benefits. While they do not yet dominate the roads, choosing one means not just saving money on fuel, but also contributing to a better, healthier future!

Generali Expatriates, one of the top insurance companies in Spain, also provides specific cover for electric vehicles that includes, for example: travel assistance (emergency recharging/towing from km 0), adapted pricing with permanent discounts, protection for charging cables and adapters up, battery coverage (for damage, fire, and theft—even for third-party owned batteries), and civil liability (up to €300,000 per claim).

Whether you drive a diesel, petrol, hybrid, or fully electric vehicle, Generali Expatriates offers solutions tailored to your needs. There are over 200 dedicated Expat Brokers and Agents who can offer advice in your own language! For a quote or to find your nearest broker, visit www.generaliexpatriates.es or call 91 342 25 49. Drive smarter, save fuel, and enjoy your life in Spain with confidence!

The Hidden Extension Dilemma

Undertaking an extension without the necessary permits brings several potential drawbacks.

The lack of legal compliance poses a significant risk. Homeowners can face penalties, fines, and even demolition orders if the unlicensed extension is discovered. Living in a property with an illegal extension can cause ongoing worry and anxiety.

The lack of proper documentation may complicate property transactions, hinder resale potential, and deter potential buyers or lenders.

The fear of discovery and constant unease create anxiety. Homeowners live with the constant worry of being exposed by authorities or neighbours and can stop homeowners from fully enjoying their property. Addressing these hazards is vital. Obtaining a retrospective licence can provide relief from the constant anxiety and stress associated with an unapproved extension. It allows homeowners to rectify their noncompliant actions, restore legal compliance, and enjoy their property without fear of denouncement or legal repercussions. This proactive approach demonstrates a commitment to adhering to local regulations and provides peace of mind.

Moreover, a retrospective licence positively impacts the property's value and marketability. Prospective buyers and lenders value properties with documented, legally compliant extensions. Such properties generate increased interest and have the potential to maximise the selling price.

Obtaining the necessary documentation also enables homeowners to secure appropriate insurance coverage for the extension, offering financial security and peace of mind in case of unforeseen events.

To obtain a retrospective licence for an extension built without a proper building licence, certain conditions must be met:

· In Murcia, the building work must be at least 4 years old.

· In Almeria, the building work needs to be over 6 years old.

· Alicante, it must have been completed before August 2010.

By demonstrating a commitment to following regulations and taking the necessary steps to obtain a retrospective licence, homeowners can transform their hidden extension dilemma into a path towards legal compliance, security, and peace of mind.

Martinez de la Casa Architects, a trusted and reputable company, specialises in Building Certification. They offer services such as Energy Performance Certificates, Habitation Licences, and Retrospective Licences. Homeowners can rely on their expertise and experience to navigate the process smoothly and efficiently. For all enquiries or to arrange an appointment, homeowners can contact Martinez de la Casa Architects at 665 810 411 (English) or visit their website www.martinezdelacasa.com to learn more and access over 300 testimonials from satisfied clients.

International Women’s Day:

Celebrating Progress and Empowerment

International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on March 8th, is a global day recognising the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also serves as a call to action for accelerating gender equality. The day is marked by events and activities worldwide that highlight the progress made and the challenges that still need to be addressed.

Historical Background

The origins of International Women’s Day trace back to the early 20th century when women began advocating for better working conditions, voting rights, and gender equality. The first official National Women’s Day was observed in 1909 in the United States, and in 1911, the first International Women’s Day was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. The movement gained momentum over the years, and in 1977, the United Nations officially recognised March 8th as International Women’s Day.

Themes and Celebrations

Each year, International Women’s Day is centred around a theme that highlights important aspects of gender equality and women’s rights. Past themes have focused on issues such as equal pay, violence against women, leadership, and education. Governments, organisations, and communities host seminars, panel discussions, marches, and cultural performances to celebrate the achievements of women and discuss ways to improve their status worldwide. The theme for International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 is “Accelerate Action”. At the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158 to achieve full gender parity, according to the World Economic Forum.

Achievements and Challenges

Significant strides have been made in areas like education, employment opportunities, and political representation. Women have broken barriers in fields once dominated by men and continue to advocate for equal rights and opportunities. However, challenges remain, including the gender pay gap, underrepresentation in leadership roles, and gender-based violence. The fight for women’s rights requires continued efforts from all sectors of society.

The Importance of International Women’s Day

IWD serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and contributions of women throughout history. It inspires individuals and organisations to take action toward creating a more inclusive and equal world. By supporting policies that promote gender equality and celebrating the achievements of women, society moves closer to a future where all individuals, regardless of gender, have equal opportunities to succeed.

Kenny Corris brings you

Aries: The Eclipse season commences with a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in the sixth house. Testing relationships and bringing to light a time to reset, revise and revalue is guiding you towards the body positive and your health and fitness.

Taurus: The Mercury retrograde begins a process which allows you to soul search, looking within and allowing you to let go and explore. The hidden is revealed and the healing you need starts you thinking there is more to life than you thought!

Gemini: Fiery Aries in the eleventh house sees you taking a stand; and not before time. Your long term goals are guiding you towards just where you really want to be, which is not where you are. Change dreams into realities now.

Cancer: The Sun moves from Pisces into Aries, and there are positive aspects of long distance travel on the horizon. You are generous with others but can be so mean with yourself. Make dreams and aspirations work for you right now!

Leo: The Venus and Mercury retrogrades are a major motivation into exploring new aspects of exploration; which lead to new life experiences. An offer that sounds too good to be true maybe isn’t what it’s cracked up to be.

Virgo: Venus in retrograde in the seventh house of relationships brings desire, and, clearly, love is on the cards. Bold actions will prevail as you are confronted by Scorpio, ruled by Pluto, and ready and unafraid with whatever comes next.

OUR OROSCOPE

Libra: Someone has been economic with the truth and it’s time to tell it like it is. You’ll get all the help you need and Mercury, though approaching retrograde, will see that the truth is told and you are able to make all this work for the best.

Scorpio: The New Moon Solar Eclipse in Aries begs you to get advice on financial matters. Money needs to work for you. Time to investigate all aspects of economy since someone just isn’t paying their way, and that’s not right.

Sagittarius: This is a powerful month but a time to reflect on reset and re-evaluation. Reorganisation reverbs around Virgo and the fourth house of domestic issues. Focus is on the family and beautifying the home that you love.

Capricorn: Nobody who really loves you would treat you this way. Enough! Aries in the eleventh house strongly guides you through long term intentions that begin with the changes you are longing to bring on, but are afraid to implement.

Aquarius: You are rarely so impulsive, but go with the flow this month; because it is high time that you thought of yourself. The Lunar Eclipse links you to the first house of self and all aspects point to your strength and new freedom.

Pisces: The Full Moon Lunar Eclipse is testing and it is not your fault that someone has recently moved the goalposts. Take control and make it known that, above all, you are not to be messed with, not now and not ever.

Every year, the coastal town of Cabo Roig, located on Spain’s Costa Blanca, hosts one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in Europe outside of Ireland. This vibrant event attracts thousands of locals and tourists, turning the streets into a sea of green in celebration of Ireland’s patron saint. This year, on Sunday, March 16th at 3pm, the day promises to be bigger and better than ever.

A Grand Spectacle of Irish Culture

Participants don shamrocks, leprechaun hats, and green attire, while businesses and pubs decorate their establishments with Irish flags and festive ornaments. The parade features local and international groups, dance troupes, and bagpipers, all contributing to the joyous spectacle. At the time of going to press over 60 acts were confirmed including - Irish Defence Force Veterans - Irish Civil Defence - Drummers - Floats - Dancers - Pipe Bands - Stilt Walkers - Circus Groups - Classic Cars - Motorbikes - ...and many more surprises!

The Fallas Celebrations of Valencia: A Spectacle of Fire and Tradition

Every March, the city of Valencia, Spain, comes alive with an explosion of colour, fire, and festivity as it hosts Las Fallas, one of the most spectacular and unique festivals in the world. This traditional event, held from March 1st to 19th, is a celebration of Saint Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters, and has evolved into a grand artistic and cultural extravaganza that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Origins and History

The origins of Las Fallas date back to the Middle Ages when Valencian carpenters would burn wooden planks used to prop up their oil lamps during winter. Over time, these simple bonfires transformed into elaborate ninots (puppets or dolls), often depicting satirical scenes or caricatures of political and social figures. Today, the festival has grown into an internationally renowned event recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Main Attractions

One of the key highlights of Las Fallas is the creation and display of fallas, enormous and intricately designed sculptures made of wood, paper-mâché, and other materials. These towering structures, some reaching up to 20 metres in height, are placed throughout the city and often convey humorous, political, or cultural messages. Each neighbourhood commissions and builds its own falla, competing for prizes awarded by the Fallas Committee.

Another major attraction is the Mascletà, a daily fireworks display held in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Unlike traditional fireworks shows, the Mascletà focuses on the rhythmic and thunderous explosions of firecrackers, creating an unforgettable auditory experience that resonates through the city.

The Ofrenda de Flores (Offering of Flowers) is another touching and significant part of the festival. On March 17th and 18th, thousands of Valencians dressed in traditional attire march through the city to offer flowers to the Virgin Mary, which are then used to create a stunning floral tapestry on the Virgin’s statue in the Plaza de la Virgen.

La Cremà: The Grand Finale

The climax of Las Fallas occurs on the night of March 19th, known as La Cremà (The Burning). At midnight, all the carefully crafted fallas, except one chosen to be preserved in the Fallas Museum, are set ablaze in a dramatic spectacle of fire and light. The night sky is illuminated as flames consume the sculptures, marking both an end and a renewal—symbolising the passing of winter and the arrival of spring.

A Celebration of Culture and Community

Beyond the fiery displays and grand festivities, Las Fallas is deeply rooted in community spirit, craftsmanship, and tradition. The festival unites people through its artistic expressions, music, food, and cultural pride. Visitors can indulge in local delicacies like buñuelos (fried dough balls) and horchata, immerse themselves in street parades, and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of Valencia’s residents.

For those seeking a unique and exhilarating cultural experience, Las Fallas is an unmissable event—a celebration where art meets fire, and tradition meets modern spectacle in the heart of Spain.

Local Volunteer Embarks on Ambitious Rhine Cycling Challenge for Charity

Andrew J Daniels MBE, a retired foster carer for children with life-limiting conditions, pianist, and choral singer, is setting off on an extraordinary journey to cycle the length of the River Rhine in June 2025. This ambitious endeavour will span 820 miles from the river’s source in Switzerland to its mouth at the Hook of Holland, all to raise funds for the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales, Spain.

Andrew, who has been a dedicated volunteer, tour guide, and volunteer coordinator at the rescue centre for over five years, is passionate about helping the centre’s founders, Susan and Rod Weeding, care for the horses and donkeys they rescue. These animals have often endured lives of neglect and abuse but now find sanctuary at Easy Horse Care.

“I’m inspired by the incredible work Susan and Rod do,” says Andrew. “They not only rescue these animals but give them a new lease on life. I wanted to challenge myself while supporting their mission, and cycling the length of the Rhine felt like the perfect way to do that.”

The cycling challenge will take two weeks, with Andrew averaging around 60 miles a day. To support his journey, he will be accompanied by a motorhome that will provide rest breaks and overnight accommodation. Along the way, Andrew plans to share updates on his GoFundMe page, where supporters can follow his progress and donate to the cause.

“Every euro raised will go directly to Easy Horse Care,” Andrew explains. “The funds will help with essential costs like feeding, veterinary care, and maintaining the rescue centre, ensuring the animals continue to receive the love and care they deserve.” Andrew’s campaign is now live on GoFundMe under the banner “Easy Horse Care Rhine Cycle 2025,” and he is calling on the public to support his efforts. Donations can be made directly via the GoFundMe page, and Andrew encourages people to share the link far and wide. He also invites local businesses to consider sponsoring his ride and individuals to organise events like coffee mornings or quizzes to help raise funds.

To donate or learn more about Andrew’s challenge, visit his GoFundMe page today. Together, we can make a difference for the animals at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre.

Mother’s Day is a special occasion celebrated worldwide to honour and appreciate mothers and maternal figures for their love, sacrifices, and dedication. It is typically observed on different dates in various countries, but Mother’s Day in the UK falls on Sunday 30th March this year. Here in Spain ‘Día de la Madre’ is the first Sunday in May which means mothers from the United Kingdom who are living in Spain can celebrate twice a year!

The origins of Mother’s Day can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where Greeks and Romans held festivals to honour mother goddesses. Mother’s Day in the UK has its origins in the 16th-century custom of ‘Mothering Sunday’, which fell on the fourth Sunday of Lent. That’s three Sundays before Easter, and the tie-in with the church calendar is why the date changes each year. On this day, people express their gratitude towards their mothers through heartfelt gestures such as giving flowers, greeting cards, and thoughtful gifts. Some families celebrate by preparing breakfast in bed, organising special outings, or simply spending quality time together. Schools and communities often hold events where children create handmade crafts and write letters to express their love and appreciation.

Beyond biological mothers, the holiday also acknowledges stepmothers, grandmothers, adoptive mothers, and other maternal figures who provide love and support. It is a reminder of the significant role that mothers play in shaping individuals and society.

While Mother’s Day is a joyous occasion for many, it can also be a bittersweet time for those who have lost their mothers. People often visit cemeteries, light candles, or cherish memories in their honour.

Ultimately, Mother’s Day is not just about gifts but about recognising and valuing the unconditional love, care, and guidance that mothers provide. It is a day to say “thank you” and to cherish the bond that makes motherhood so special.

Spanish Father’s Day (Día del Padre) is celebrated on March 19th, coinciding with St. Joseph’s Day (Día de San José), the feast day of Saint Joseph, who is regarded as the ideal father figure in Christianity. This day honours fathers, grandfathers, and father figures for their love, dedication, and role in the family.

In Spain, Father’s Day is a time for families to come together and show appreciation. Children often give their fathers handmade gifts, drawings, or notes expressing their gratitude. Schools also organise activities where kids create crafts and cards for their dads. Many families celebrate by sharing a special meal, either at home or in a restaurant. Traditional Spanish dishes, such as paella, tapas, or roasted meats, are often enjoyed during the celebration.

Since March 19th is a religious holiday, some Spaniards attend church services in honour of Saint Joseph, the patron saint of fathers and workers. Although it is not a public holiday in all regions of Spain, it remains a meaningful day for many families.

Father’s Day is held on the third Sunday of June in the UK, so fathers from the United Kingdom who are living in Spain can also celebrate twice a year.
