JUNE 2025 32 YEARS SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY SINCE 1993
Did you know that by having the optimum hearing and sight enhances our understanding and interpretation of visual and auditory cues?
What that means for us is that we are lucky that we can improve our sight or hearing needs with glasses/ contact lenses and/or hearing aids, enabling us to read non-verbal cues, facial expression and body language to have a better understanding of the world around us. Good communication makes us feel involved, and not lonely or isolated from the company we are in.
With empathy, at Opticas Intervision Expert we are able to provide both hearing and sight tests in the same clinic for FREE. Our professional clinicians will check both your hearing and vision, and advise on the hearing aids and/or glasses that will best suit both needs and budget. It doesn't end there as we provide a continued care service, and make follow up appointments and any adjustments required during this time.

We have another upcoming very proud parents moment when our not so little angel graduates from bachillerato later this month. It has been a long and gruelling process but through sheer determination she has never given up and persevered to get there in the end....well done Alicia!!
There are a few events on the horizon in June. On Sunday 15th June we have Fathers Day (UK), make sure you reserve a table early if you are planning on spoiling the main man in your life.
The Hogueras de San Juan in Alicante, is a vibrant festival held annually from June 20th to 24th, marking the start of summer. It's a grand cultural display featuring spectacular bonfires, parades, and fireworks, drawing a large influx of tourists. The festival's origins trace back to ancient customs of burning unwanted objects at the summer solstice. If you don't want to travel as far as Alicante, the festival is also celebrated on a smaller scale in Guardamar del Segura.
At the end of June we have the start of the fiestas in Rojales with the fireworks for San Pedro being on the 29th June and then the Moors and Christians the first weekend in July. As always there will be a good turnout with partying well into the early hours of the morning. Whatever you plan to do, enjoy... the summer has arrived!!!
Whilst out and about don't forget to pick up a copy of the latest Focus on Professional Services magazine and keep it to hand, as you never know when you will need one of the trades or services showcased in it.
Until next time ….

Iberian reenactments and Arts and Crafts at the Olocau Iberfesta
Fancy a weekend away. Olocau is a small village in the Valencia area that boasts an interesting Iberian archeological site. It celebrates its latest edition of Iberfesta from June 6th to 8th. This established event revolves around Iberian culture and features historical reenactments, military parades, guided tours of the Puntal dels Llops site and the Museum Collection, and educational workshops. For the third consecutive year it includes an authentic Arts and Crafts Fair organised by craft association Amata.
The fair is set up in the main street (Calle Mayor) and brings together more than 30 stalls, including professional artisans, local creators, local associations, and tourist information stalls from other towns with Iberian sites. Participating artisans come dressed in Iberian-inspired clothing, creating a coherent atmosphere with the rest of the event's activities.
It is a fair of unique pieces, made entirely by hand, reflecting both the traditional craft and the personal creativity of each designer. Whether you're looking for a gift for your aunt or your children, to treat yourself, or to decorate your home, you're sure to find something original: jewellery made of various materials, ceramics, beautiful horn combs, socarrats (traditional Valencian hand painted tiles), cloth or leather bags, lamps made from pumpkins or pine cones, wooden toys, and much more!
Amata also offers several craft demonstrations each day, allowing the public to learn about the production process of various products firsthand. A tavern area is also available for visitors to refresh and relax in a themed setting.
The fair will be open to the public at the following times:
Friday from 7 - 10pm; Saturday from 11am - 2pm and from 6pm - 10pm and on Sunday from 11am - 3pm.
The full programme can be found at www.puebloartesano.es/olocau.
VENUS AND TRITON AND THEIR STRANGE WAYS
That sounds like the title of a really bad B movie from the 1950s but these two are not fictional and really do move in strange ways.
I've written many times about how the solar system we see is the result of order coming from chaos, and the fundamental force (that gave us not only our Sun, planets, and the whole universe) is gravity. Last month I explained why everything in the universe spins and that in our solar system every planet and moon spins the same way. I lied, quite deliberately to keep things simple, so now I'll try and sort that out. There are lots of little rocks etc floating around in space that spin wherever chance takes them after hitting each other, but there are two big things that are really odd and seem to break the rules, the planet Venus and Neptune's biggest moon, Triton.
Every moon that orbits a planet goes around in the same direction that the planet spins, that's the way planetary physics works, except that Triton doesn't, it orbits in the opposite direction, the only moon to do so. So why does it do that, is Physics wrong? Neptune is the furthest planet from the Sun, it's also the nearest planet to a vast area called the Kuiper belt, a place in space where lots of minor planets like Pluto, Makemake and many others orbit. We think that aeons ago there was a collision that sent a minor planet inwards and it got caught by Neptune's gravity but at an angle that made it circle in the wrong direction. As you would expect, this isn't a stable situation and in millions of years gravity will probably break Triton up and there might be a new ringed planet in the solar system, you can't beat physics!
Now for Venus, the nearest planet to Earth (sort of), this is a very strange place. Firstly all the other planets spin in a clockwise direction, Venus in an anticlockwise direction. Next, it does this very slowly, Earth takes 24 hours to spin once, that's our day. Venus takes 243 Earth days to spin once, that's a very long day. Couple with this that it takes 225 Earth days to circle the Sun, one Venusian year.
The strange result of this is that a Venusian day lasts longer than a Venusian year, and the Sun will rise in the west and set in the east, an odd place isn't it?
Why is Venus like this? The truth is that we aren't sure, but like so many other planets and moons, it was probably hit by something else in the very early history of the solar system, and this collision actually turned the planet upside down. If this is correct Venus used to spin the same way as the other planets but as one professor put it, 'Venus is arse upwards!'
That's all for now, next month I'll tell you how you should be pronouncing Uranus, and why that's another strange place.

Crescendo International Choir performed a charity concert Friday evening, May 9, at the Casa Cultural in L’Alfas del Pi as one of three choirs participating in the International Festival of Choirs. The Story Behind SIBLINGS:
A Personal Journey Through Adoption
I was born in Devon and adopted nine days later by a warm, loving family in Bristol. I had a happy childhood, but always felt a quiet pull to understand where I came from. Out of love and respect for my adoptive parents, I kept that longing to myself until after they passed - I never wanted them to feel anything but cherished.
Years later, after a long and sometimes difficult search, I found more than I ever imagined... my birth mother, who told me she had always loved me, and three full sisters I never knew I had. That quiet, life-changing connection became the emotional heart of my SIBLINGS books.
It’s taken almost a decade to feel truly ready to share this story. For years, I carried it quietly, knowing it was too raw, too close. I needed time to reflect, to process, to find the courage to shape it into fiction. In the meantime, I wrote other novels, but this series is by far the most personal work I’ve done. When the moment came, I didn’t question it. I just knew - it was time.
Emma’s Story, the latest book, explores adoption through an insider’s lens - themes of identity, belonging, loss, and reconnection. Though the characters are fictional, the emotional truths are very real.
Each SIBLINGS novel stands alone, with overlapping characters and storylines. You don’t need to have read Kit’s Story (available online) to enjoy Emma’s Story. I’m still working on the seriesthere’s one more SIBLINGS book to come.
At a recent library event, a grandfather told me how much the books had helped him understand his adopted grandchildren. That really touched me, because that’s exactly why I’m writing SIBLINGS. Emma’s Story launches 28 June. Just search Hilary Coombes SIBLINGS on Amazon. More at www.hilarycoombes.com, or email me at hilarycoombes.author@gmail.com.
Set Sail with Confidence: Generali Expatriates
Boat Insurance Has You Covered
Whether it’s your full-time residence or a beloved getaway, Spain’s Mediterranean coast has become a second home to many expats. For boating enthusiasts, it’s a true paradise: year-round sunshine, crystal-clear waters, and perfect conditions for heading out to sea. But owning a boat or yacht isn’t just about enjoyment – it also means taking care of the practicalities. If you’re preparing to start the new season on the right foot, it’s not only the engine and equipment that matter – having the right insurance in place is just as important.
After a long winter in storage, your boat is probably ready to be brought back to life. With the good weather now here, it’s time to enjoy the freedom of the open water. A thorough clean and check-up, and you’re ready to rediscover the joy of being back on the waves, doing what you love most.
Even when you’ve taken care of all the physical preparations, it’s easy to overlook the unpredictable – the accidents or issues that can arise while out at sea. Whether you have a dinghy, a jet ski or a luxury yacht, it’s not just the hull and engine that need protection – you do too.
Boating is full of variables, and the unexpected can happen at any time. That’s why having the right insurance from a trusted provider is essential. With Generali Expatriates, you’ll find a policy that goes far beyond basic third-party liability.

The Path to Compliance: Realities of Light Enclosures for Patios and Terraces in Spain
Patios and semi-open porches have long been a hallmark of Spain’s charming Mediterranean architecture, offering cool breezes and shaded retreats. While the allure of outdoor living is ingrained in Spain’s lifestyle, it’s essential to be informed about the regulations surrounding enclosed spaces. Here are five eye-opening facts to consider: Unseen Consequences of Light Enclosures The enchantment of Spain’s outdoor spaces often leads property owners to enclose patios, semi-open porches, terraces, etc with light aluminium enclosures. Although easy and cost-effective to install, these light enclosures require a major licence due to their substantial impact on property dynamics. Enclosed areas contribute to property size, alter its description, affect ventilation and light, and increase the number of rooms. Ignoring these factors can lead to unexpected legal complications.
Legal Implications and Fines The Spanish system mandates that these light enclosures, regardless of their lightweight nature, necessitate a major licence. Failure to obtain the proper licence can result in fines and even demolition orders if detected by authorities. Fines, often surpassing 300€ per square metre, can escalate quickly. For instance, a modest 10m² enclosure could trigger a 3,000€ fine. Additionally, these unlicenced structures can disrupt the property’s selling process and devalue its market price.
Safeguarding Your Investment If you’ve already installed such enclosures, a solution exists. A retrospective licence from a qualified Spanish Architect can shield your extension from objections, fines or demolition orders by any authority, irrespective of future legal changes. This proactive step can provide peace of mind and protect your property’s value.
Conditions for Obtaining a Retrospective Licence The process to rectify unlicenced enclosures retrospectively is straight forward.
