www.femalefocusonline.com Happy New Year to everyone and let's hope that 2024 brings much joy, happiness and good health to us all (if wealth also wants to come along there will be no complaints from my end). Although I have not made any New Year's resolutions, I am determined to make my approach to this year one with optimism and positivity. This is the year I am going to get things done in all aspects…. home front, work life and general wellbeing or that is certainly my intention.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and Santa was good to you all. My angel got an early Christmas present mid December by passing her driving test and having her own set of wheels. This has given her a new found freedom and independence that will no doubt change her life forever. And as parents, we can now get pay back for all the taxi runs over the years and hang up our own car keys when desired...we'll see how long that lasts? Until the next time.....

GARDENING HINTS & TIPS Your Christmas Poinsettia Hello everyone, Christmas is over, and lots of you will have a lovely plant left over, hopefully in a special Santa pot similar to those we made last month. It's always saddened me when I see these put in the bins at the end of January, such a waste of a really nice plant. Keeping the plant alive and flourishing is quite easy, if left to themselves in a huge pot or the ground, they can grow nearly 2 meters tall, which is fine if you've a big garden, if not, then just look after them and you'll have a plant for next year. They need putting somewhere where they'll get several hours of sun each day then in April, prune back the stems to around 20 cms. When you see new growth give them a little liquid fertiliser, and replace part of the compost to keep a good supply of minerals etc. It's not rocket science. Just look after them and avoid excess heat in summer, and cold in the winter. Now for something else, this will be my last contribution in this lovely magazine, the garden club is no more. It was decided at our last meeting to wind it up due to lack of members. Such a shame but such is life. Have a great new year, and enjoy your plants. Andrea Oates.

Crescendo International Choir Performed Four Christmas Concerts in December

Page 7

QFocus Magazine January 2024

Crescendo International Choir had a busy month in December, performing three concerts in the Costa Blanca community. The most recent of these took place on Saturday, December 16 at Club Quesada, in Rojales. The choir entertained the assembled crowd with Christmas favourites such as White Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, The Little Drummer Boy plus popular Spanish tunes like Campana Sobre Campana and Ya Viene La Vieja. Between these songs, the choir sang well-known Christmas carols accompanied by audience members, including Away in a Manger, Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Silent Night. The night before this, Crescendo choir members performed several Christmas songs at Plaza de Constitution in Torrevieja, along with a Spanish choir, a Scandinavian choir and the Sette Voci tenors. This event was called Carols in the Square and also featured the Symphony Orchestra of Torrevieja and the “Francisco Casanovas” of Torrevieja. Earlier in the same week, Crescendo Choir performed a Christmas concert at La Siesta Evangelical Church in Torrevieja, raising 240€ for the church’s missionary work, including financial support to help educate girls in India and support an orphanage in Mozambique. On Saturday, December 2, the choir gave another Christmas concert at the Catholic Church in Benijofar. The bucket collection after the concert raised almost 300€ for the local food bank. The choir also supplied two big baskets of chocolate, biscuits, candy and other treats for local needy families to give to their children for Christmas. Starting in this month, choir rehearsals will take place on Thursdays from 17:15 to 19:45 at the Club Quesada. The first rehearsal will be Thursday, January 11. For more details about the choir, see crescendo-choir.com. You can also follow the group on Facebook at Crescendo Choir. If you have questions, email info@crescendo-choir.com. The choir would be delighted to welcome new singers. Our current choir includes people from England, Scotland, Wales, the US, the Netherlands, Germany, and Scandinavia, among other nationalities. Our Music Director, Irene Oliva, and pianist, Antonio Guillen, are accomplished Spanish musicians. The photo shows Crescendo Choir performing at the Carols in the Square event in Torrevieja. The Path to Compliance: Realities of Light Enclosures for Patios and Terraces in Spain article supplied by Martinez de la Casa Architects

Patios and semi-open porches have long been a hallmark of Spain's charming Mediterranean architecture, offering cool breezes and shaded retreats. While the allure of outdoor living is ingrained in Spain's lifestyle, it's essential to be informed about the regulations surrounding enclosed spaces. Here are five eye-opening facts to consider:

Unseen Consequences of Light Enclosures The enchantment of Spain's outdoor spaces often leads property owners to enclose patios, semi-open porches, terraces, and more with light aluminium enclosures. Although easy and cost-effective to install, these light enclosures require a major license due to their substantial impact on property dynamics. Enclosed areas contribute to property size, alter its description, affect ventilation and light, and increase the number of rooms. Ignoring these factors can lead to unexpected legal complications. Legal Implications and Fines The Spanish system mandates that these light enclosures, regardless of their lightweight nature, necessitate a major license. Failure to obtain the proper license can result in fines and even demolition orders if detected by authorities. Fines, often surpassing 300€ per sqm, can escalate quickly. For instance, a modest 10sqm enclosure could trigger a 3,000€ fine. Additionally, these unlicenced structures can disrupt the property's selling process and devalue its market price. Safeguarding Your Investment If you've already installed such enclosures, a solution exists. A retrospective license from a qualified Spanish Architect can shield your extension from objections, fines or demolition orders by any authority, irrespective of future legal changes. This proactive step can provide peace of mind and protect your property's value. Conditions for Obtaining a Retrospective License The process to rectify unlicensed enclosures retrospectively is straight forward. Depending on your location, the building work must meet specific conditions. In Murcia, extensions must be at least 4 years old, while in Almeria, the requirement is over 6 years. Alicante mandates completion before August 2010. Notably, extensions previously fined or ordered for demolition are ineligible for retrospective licenses. The Path to Resolution Obtaining a retrospective license is straightforward. Upon confirmation, Martinez de la Casa Architects will schedule a visit to survey your extension or pool, requiring only your NIE and current title deeds. The resulting Retrospective License, stamped by the Official College of Architects or Notarised, will be delivered within a guaranteed 10 working days. Seeking Clarity and Compliance Martinez de la Casa Architects leads the way in Building Certification in Spain. Cost-wise, a Pool Retrospective Licence (Certificate of Antiquity) is 220€ + IVA (266,20€ IVA incl), and Extensions cost 290€ + IVA (350,90€ IVA incl, covering all extensions on the property). Beyond retrospective licenses, we offer Energy Performance Certificates (121€ IVA incl) and Habitation/Occupation Licences, providing comprehensive solutions for property owners. To clarify uncertainties or embark on the easy path to retrospective compliance, call 665 810 411 (English) or explore our wealth of over 300 clients testimonials at www.martinezdelacasa.com. Specsavers Ópticas and Rotary Guardamar collecting for the Red Cross

QFocus Magazine January 2024

During January, Rotary Guardamar and Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar, Torrevieja and La Zenia are working together to collect cleaning products, toiletries and baby care products for the Red Cross Guardamar. There is a large demand at present for these products and so these two organisations are joining forces to maximise the amount collected. The director of these three Specsavers Ópticas stores, Francisco Jurado, was proud to be elected as President of Rotary Club Guardamar and is strengthening the synergy between the club and his stores to support the community as much as he can. He explains, ‘We are delighted to launch this collection campaign for the Red Cross in Guardamar, an excellent charity, that we have supported many times in the past. The charity contacted us to say that they had a shortage of baby care products, cleaning products and toiletries and asked for support. The campaign is running until the end of January and we need all the help people can give us. Unfortunately, many people in our community are struggling with the increasing cost of food and basic supplies and so the demand has significantly grown. If customers and local residents can add a few items to their weekly shop and drop them into their nearest store, it would make an enormous difference to families who are really struggling.’ Passengers already have a choice of more than 100 Rotary International is an international organisation and service club destinations to fly direct from Alicante airport. WHERE THE MOON CAME FROM?

When I was young many people joked that the Moon was made of cheese. A really weird idea but it did make a great Wallace and Grommet cartoon. Ideas about how the Moon was formed have changed a lot over the years, but nowadays we’re pretty certain about its origin. Decades ago the two most popular ideas about the Moon’s origin were that it formed at the same time as the Earth from all the rocks surrounding the Sun in the early solar system, or that it was a minor planet captured by our gravity. These ideas were always a bit dodgy. If the Moon had formed at the same time as the Earth, it should have an iron core like the Earth... it hasn’t. If it was a captured planet, it should have different rock types to the Earth, it hasn’t. There are a lot more observations like this, suffice to say that we learnt a lot from the rocks brought home by the Apollo astronauts. Those same rocks, along with decades of research into the way the solar system has changed over billions of years, means we’re now pretty certain what happened.

The giant impact theory.

I like to call this cosmic snooker, with the planets as the balls. Around 4.5 billion years ago the solar system was a busy and chaotic place, stuff everywhere and nothing like the ordered and mostly empty place it is now. Earth was still molten rock and a horrible place to be. It was minding its own business when another planet about the size Mars collided in a glancing blow with Earth. We even have a name for this planet, Theia, and Theia had been around for a while, orbiting near the Earth until gravity pulled them together. The results vaporised the upper layers of Earth’s mantle, ejected large amounts of debris into Earth orbit and totally wrecked Theia. The next stage took millions of years, but gravity never gets tired and slowly but surely it pulled all the bits together, some returning to Earth but much forming into a separate body we now call the Moon. This glancing but destructive blow is why we still have our iron core but the Moon has none. A quick look at the Moon’s surface still shows the scars of all the remaining rocks that continued to pummel the surface, scars that have long been hidden and lost on Earth. Incidentally, all this is slightly connected with the reason the Moon’s other side is rather different from the one we see, but that’s a subject for another time. Sounds fanciful and fantastic doesn't it? Like a scenario from a Dr Who story, but it really happened, there is now so much evidence for this that you can feel quite safe in accepting it. The early solar system was a violent place. ● To find out more about observing and astronomy why not join our group, email us at vegabaja.astronomygroup@gmail.com to find out more.

Why you should eat a carrot a day

Fruit and vegetables form part of a healthy diet and the World Health Organisation recommends eating at least 400g of fruit and veg a day to lower the risk of developing serious health problems. Carrots are a relatively cheap and versatile vegetable to include in your diet. Here are some advantages to adding carrots to your daily diet: ● They are a great source of beta-carotene and vitamin A, which are important for healthy eyes. Eating carrots regularly can help you keep good vision and prevent problems, such as age-related macular degeneration. ● Vitamin A in carrots also promotes the production of collagen, thus helping to reduce wrinkles, and the antioxidants in carrots help to keep skin looking radiant and healthy. ● These antioxidants along with the vitamins in carrots can boost your immune system. ● Carrots are low in calories and fat while being full of fibre and potassium, which can aid a healthy heart. This vegetable is very versatile too: ● Carrots taste great raw - either grate them and add to a salad or cut them into sticks for a crunchy snack. They can also be juiced or blended along with other fruits and vegetables in a healthy smoothie. ● Steaming carrots help them to stay crunchy while retaining a lot of the nutrients. They go well with any fish or meat dish. ● Roast carrots taste sweeter. Cut into sticks or large chunks and drizzle with olive oil, a little salt and any spices or herbs you fancy. Roast in the oven or airfryer until tender. ● Add sliced carrots to any stews or curries. ● Pop a few carrots into any vegetable soup - curried carrot and parsnip soup is a winter favourite while carrot and coriander soup makes a tasty starter. Costa Blanca Morris Dancers to appear on UK TV

The company responsible for filming the popular Channel 5 TV programme ‘Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun’ spent a day filming Morris ‘Squire’, Jean, and her husband, Dave, who is also in the accompanying band, as they prepared for the dancers to perform during a Craft Fair held in the garden and Community Hall outside Campoverde Church. As well as filming the dancing and stalls at the Craft Fair, the TV crew followed the group to a social meal afterwards at ‘El Bar S C’ in the nearby village of San Cayetano. Here, the dancers were persuaded to dance again, to the delight of the customers, and two of the film crew were so enthusiastic about the performance that they asked if they could join in! Currently believed to be the only Morris team in Spain, ‘Costa Blanca Morris Dancers’ perform at indoor or outdoor social or charity events and are always looking for new members, men or women of any age. The dancers practice every Friday afternoon from 4 - 6pm at the Ayuntamiento, Plaza Florida, Pinar de Campoverde 03191 (near Pilar de la Horadada). No previous experience is necessary as training will be given, so if you are looking for a fun and not too strenuous form of exercise, contact the Squire, Jean Tonge, by email at costablancamorrisdancers@yahoo.com
