Since Brexit, life has changed in countless ways for UK nationals living in or planning a move to Spain. One of the most critical areas where these changes are deeply felt is healthcare. Public access is not automatic or an entitlement for everyone so Private Healthcare is not a luxury- it’s a necessity. Healthcare and Visa Requirements Go Hand-in-Hand
For UK nationals applying for residency in Spain, whether it's a Non-Lucrative Visa, Digital Nomad Visa, TIE, or Residencia, proof of private health cover is a mandatory requirement. If you don’t qualify for the Spanish national health system through employment, a registered S1 form, or permanent residency, you must have a private policy in place. This is where ASSSA Health Insurance comes in. Fully accepted for visa applications, ASSSA provides the legal certification needed and ensures you're compliant with Spanish immigration rules. Why Choose ASSSA?
Unlike many other insurers, ASSSA offers comprehensive coverage designed with expats in mind. That means:
• Access to private hospitals and clinics
• Shorter waiting times for appointments, diagnostics, and treatments
• A broader choice of specialists
• English-speaking doctors, eliminating the need for an interpreter
Plus, with ASSSA, you won’t face any surprise bills if you're using your policy correctly—an essential peace of mind when navigating healthcare in a foreign country. No Co-Payments, No Surprises
One of the biggest pitfalls people face is being tempted by low-cost policies. These often come with limited coverage, co-payments, or hidden conditions that may not meet visa
requirements. ASSSA, however, offers no co-payments and a contractual guarantee that your policy cannot be cancelled due to age, illness, or high usage.
And unlike many providers, your joining age is fixed, meaning you won’t face rising premiums simply because you get older.
Beat the Waiting Lists
Spain’s National Health Service, while excellent, is currently under strain. Long waiting lists for even basic diagnostics are unfortunately becoming the norm. For anyone experiencing acute pain or needing quick answers, private health care can make a world of difference.
ASSSA clients benefit from faster access to medical care, including emergency services and ambulance transport to their network of partner hospitals.
Personalised Support When You Need It Most
Understanding what your policy covers—and how to use it—is just as important as having one. That’s why Jennifer Cunningham Insurance has a dedicated ASSSA administrator on hand to help. Whether it’s processing authorisation requests, answering questions, or liaising with ASSSA directly on your behalf, we’re here to take the stress out of the process.
Final Thought: Don’t Just Buy on Price
When it comes to health insurance, cheaper doesn’t always mean better. With something as important as your health, the right coverage and reliable support are worth every penny.

Easter saw 7 family members visiting, which along with darling daughter's family and us two, made 13. The logistics of 13 people living in 4 different places was interesting and likened to herding cats more than once. Darling daughter said that from now on a maximum of 3 people would be allowed at one time and if there were more than that in the visiting family they would just have to choose carefully who they wanted to bring! Joking aside it was great to see them and everyone had a lovely time.
This month there is a lot going on. It is the half year in Calpe for the Moors and Christians and then we are going to see Sarah Millican in Barcelona and Ed Sheeran in Madrid. There is also the air show in San Miguel de Las Salinas as well as lots of local fairs and events with something for everyone. We are so lucky to have so much going on around us and I am determined to make the most of it all.

A simple 1°C adjustment on your thermostat can save around 7% on heating or cooling costs. And it's a common myth that leaving lights on uses less energy than switching them off and on - it doesn't, no matter what type of light bulb you use.
With energy costs rising across Europe, improving the efficiency of your home is a smart financial move and a step towards a more sustainable future. By adopting energy saving practices, you can reduce your consumption while maintaining a comfortable living environment.
Here are some tips for your home, brought to you by Generali Expatriates.
Optimise heating and cooling
· Set it right: Aim for 21°C in winter and 26°C or higher in summer.
· Ventilate wisely: In winter, ventilate for just a few minutes to refresh the air without losing heat. In summer, open windows at night or early morning for cooler air.
· Smart controls: Use programmable thermostats or radiator valves to save 8-13% on energy.
Insulate and seal your home
· Seal gaps: Check for draughts around windows and doors and use weather stripping to prevent heat loss.
· Upgrade insulation: Invest in external insulation and doubleglazed windows with thermal breaks.
Save on hot water
· Lower the temperature: Set your water heater to 50-55°C for efficiency.
· Efficient habits: Use cold water for laundry and run appliances only when full.
Smarter appliances
· Look for the label: Choose appliances with high energy ratings (A or better).
· Unplug and save: Unplug devices or use power strips to cut "phantom" energy use.
Bright Ideas for Lighting
· LEDs are best: LED bulbs use up to 90% less energy and last longer.
· Use daylight: Maximise natural light and turn off lights when leaving a room.

And everything in space spins too.
The fact that the Earth spins, the Sun spins and we and every other planet spin around the Sun is something that most of us just take for granted, but, like everything else in our universe, there's a reason for it. There is a technical expression for this, but I'll leave that for later because I don't want to stop you reading and you don't need a technical term to understand why this happens.
Let's go back in time, around 5 billion years ago gravity had already pulled together lots of molecules of mostly hydrogen gas into a vast sphere where the heat and pressure made those join, or fuse together and create our star, the Sun, that's hydrogen fusion. There is a massive cloud of other stuff around the Sun, bits of rock and dust, then over time small bits are drawn together by gravity to become bigger bits and the bigger bits have a little more gravity so they pull more and more bits together until one day you've got some planets. This is a massive over simplification of the process, but in essence it's correct. Now then. What about the spinning? In what I've just described everything is already spinning. Picture the time before all the Sun and planets, just lots of atoms, dust et all in one place and moving about, now imagine two bits of space dust or maybe two pebbles floating together and hitting each other. The chances are that they won't hit dead on but will clip each other. This clipping make each of the two bits spin in much the same way as a footballer can make a ball swerve around other players into the goal. What both the footballer and the rocks are doing is imparting angular momentum.
Once there are lots of bits of rock spinning, they pass near other debris and the gravitational kick they give starts them spinning too. If you're thinking that some would spin one way and some the other way you'd be correct but there are always more going one way than the other and over an immense time whatever direction most are going in wins the battle. Yes, the direction of spin in the solar system is the result of pure chance decided a very long time ago.
It's probably obvious that the larger or more massive something is, the more angular momentum it can pass on to other things near it, so the Sun's spin will have a vast effect on anything nearby, like the planets which is why they all orbit in the same direction. If you like a bit of simple maths, there's a formula for this, L= mvr. L is the angular momentum, m=mass v=velocity and r=the radius. I don't normally mention maths, but this bit is so beautiful because it works with a speck of dust or our whole solar system, and the rest of the known universe.
Of course there are what seems like exceptions. For example whilst all the planets orbit same way and most spin in the same direction there are two oddities. Venus spins on its axis the opposite direction to all the rest and nobody is certain why, but there are some interesting ideas. Lastly Neptune moon Triton is the only large moon in the solar system that orbits backwards, a retrograde orbit as we call it.
Next month I'll talk a bit more about that.

If you are a tax resident in Spain, it is important to understand your tax obligations, especially regarding the Income Tax Return. Failing to comply with this obligation can lead to unnecessary penalties and surcharges. Below, we explain the key aspects you need to consider to comply with current regulations and avoid issues with the Tax Agency. Who is required to file the Income Tax Return?
In general terms, those who are tax residents in Spain and exceed certain income thresholds must file the Income Tax Return. A person is considered a tax resident if they have spent more than 183 days in Spanish territory within a calendar year or if their main economic activities are based in Spain.
If you earn more than €22,000 per year from a single payer, or more than €15,000 if you have multiple payers (and the second payer has contributed more than €1,500), you will be required to file a return. The same applies if you generate income from economic activities, rental properties, or other taxable sources. It is important to note that even if you are not required to file a return, in some cases it may be beneficial to do so in order to take advantage of tax deductions and refunds.
How does double taxation affect you?
If you generate income abroad, Spain has double taxation agreements with numerous countries to prevent you from paying taxes twice on the same income. Each case must be analysed individually to apply the appropriate deductions and tax benefits.
What tax benefits can apply?
There are various deductions and tax reductions available depending on the taxpayer’s personal and family situation, such as:
· Reductions for contributions to pension plans.
· Deductions for renting a primary residence (in certain cases).
· Specific regional deductions depending on the autonomous community where you reside.
Deadlines and submission
The period for filing the Income Tax Return begins on 2 April and ends on June 30, 2025. It can be submitted electronically through the Tax Agency’s online platform or with the assistance of a tax advisor.
How can we help you?
Our law firm specialises in international taxation and can guide you through the entire process, ensuring compliance with regulations and optimising your taxation. If you have any doubts about your tax situation or need assistance with your return, do not hesitate to contact us.

Breathing difficulties can be frightening - for the person affected and anyone nearby. Whether triggered by a pollen allergy, asthma, or another underlying condition, it’s important to stay calm and act fast. If someone is having trouble breathing:
• Stay calm and reassure them. Panic can worsen symptoms.
• Help them sit upright. Lying down may make it harder to breathe.
• Loosen any tight clothing. This helps ease airflow.
• Assist with medication. If they have an inhaler or prescribed allergy treatment, help them use it.
• Call for medical help immediately. Don’t wait to see if symptoms improve - especially if they worsen quickly. In the case of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), symptoms may include swelling, wheezing, a drop in blood pressure, and even loss of consciousness. This is a life-threatening emergency. Time is critical. That’s where being a member of the Private 24/7 Emergency Ambulance Service can be a game-changer. Covering all of Costa Blanca North, including inland areas, this service ensures that trained paramedics can reach you swiftly - when every second counts.
For just €60 per year, you get:
• Faster response times than the state service
• GPS-equipped ambulances that can find you wherever you are
• Highly trained paramedics with advanced life-saving equipment
• Communication with hospitals ahead of your arrival

Polynucleotides are powerful, naturally occurring molecules that support skin repair and regeneration. By boosting cell growth, enhancing skin elasticity, and promoting overall skin health, they help your skin look and feel its best.
Polynucleotides, when introduced into the skin, work from deep within to activate the skin's natural repair process. These compounds stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, two essential proteins that keep the skin firm and elastic. They also help improve hydration by attracting and retaining water in the deeper layers of the skin, contributing to a smoother, healthier appearance. Additionally they support tissue regeneration, speeding up recovery and reducing visible signs of ageing. The result is firmer, more elastic skin with a youthful glow.
* Improves skin texture: Helps smooth and renew the skin's surface, leaving it more even.
* Reduces face lines: Fights signs of ageing by minimising wrinkles and expression lines.
* Enhances elasticity: Boosts the firmness and flexibility of the skin, leaving it more youthful and toned.
* Effective treatment for various skin concerns: Ideal for treating ageing, acne scars, dark circles, and under-eye bags.
* Minimal downtime: Enjoy natural results with reduced recovery time.
* Rejuvenating results: Perfect for those looking to revitalise their skin and achieve a fresh, youthful appearance.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an FDA approved procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of major depression. It's called a "non-invasive" procedure because it's done without using surgery or cutting the skin, TMS usually is used only when other depression treatments haven't been effective. It is also effective for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), migraines, and to help people stop smoking when standard treatments haven't worked well.
During an TMS session for depression, an electromagnetic coil is placed against the scalp of your head. This coil delivers magnetic pulses that stimulate nerve cells in the region of your brain involved in mood control and depression. It's thought to activate regions of the brain that have decreased activity during depression.
Although the biology of why TMS works isn't completely understood, the stimulation appears to affect how the brain is working. It seems to ease depression symptoms and improve mood.
Depression is a treatable condition. But for some people, standard treatments aren't effective. Repetitive TMS may be used when standard treatments such as medicines, and talk therapy, known as psychotherapy, don't work.

Wednesday, 7 May 2025: FRANCIS BACON, by Frank Woodgate
Until his death in 1992, Bacon was regarded as Britain's greatest 20th Century artist, and his dramatic images can be exquisitely beautiful and shocking at the same time. Perhaps more than any other artist, he captured the darkness at the heart of the human experience. Come to learn how his work explores abjection, nihilism and hope!

At Clinica Dental La Plaza, we believe it’s never too early to start caring for your child’s dental health. The habits established during childhood lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles, and we are here to guide you every step of the way.
As soon as the first baby teeth appear, it’s crucial to clean them with a soft toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste. By the age of three, when all baby teeth have erupted, brushing twice daily should be part of the normal routine. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent decay, making this simple habit one of the best defences for your child’s teeth.
Diet also plays a vital role in dental health. Limiting sugar intake from a young age helps prevent tooth decay and reduces the risk of long-term health issues such as obesity. Avoid sugary snacks, fizzy drinks, and processed foods, instead opting for water, milk, and natural sugars found in fruits. Clinica Dental La Plaza is the answer, providing expert dietary advice to support your child’s oral health.
Regular dental check-ups, at least once a year, are essential for children. Our team can monitor the development of their teeth, identify early signs of decay, and provide preventive treatments like fissure sealants to protect permanent molars. We also address any developmental concerns promptly, helping to avoid complex treatments later in life.
Clinica Dental La Plaza is the answer - we take extra care to create a positive and relaxed environment. Our team understands the importance of making a child’s early dental experiences enjoyable and stress-free. For very anxious children, we offer nitrous oxide sedation to ensure they remain comfortable during treatment.
We are passionate about safeguarding your child’s smile. Contact us today to book an appointment and discover how our dedicated team can support your family’s dental health journey. Call 96 646 1120 or visit us in Jávea—because every smile deserves the best care.
Bring your children for a check-up – only 10€.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the world - and the most preventable. With longer, sunnier days tempting us outdoors, it’s the perfect time for a friendly reminder: your skin needs protection, not just a tan.
Whether you're gardening, hiking, or simply walking to the café, UV rays can sneak up on you - even on cloudy days. That means sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and covering up when possible aren’t just beach-day accessories - they're everyday essentials. Check your skin regularly for any new moles, changes in shape, or anything that looks suspicious. When in doubt, get it checked out. Early detection saves lives.
So enjoy the sunshine - but do it wisely. Your skin will thank you for years to come. If you have concerns or would like more information please visit our website. We are always ready to help or chat. www.cancercarejavea.org.
With only short spells of the expected Spring sunshine, and more much needed rain than usual, the Entertainers, together with us all, cannot wait for summer when they can start performing again for local charities. The miserable weather has meant their usual outdoor practices have not been possible, so unusually for this time of year Jo’s neighbours in Alcalali have not yet had a foretaste of the Entertainers new songs.
The Entertainers are all hoping that the Spring sunshine will return soon to enable them to finalise their practices outside, in readiness for their first shows in May. Already scheduled are:
23rd May – U3A Denia Hog Roast at Loc Arcos 30th May – Javea Freemasons at Carrasco, Javea.
We understand these shows may already be sold out but the Entertainers still have some free dates in their programme, such as 5th June, so get hold of your charity events team and arrange your own evening of wonderful song and dance, and most importantly fun with the fabulous Entertainers. Article by Peter Sockett, photo by Entertainers.
Montgó Chorale and Musical Director Aileen Lightfoot would like to welcome you to the first of their Spring Concerts, on Friday May 9th at 7pm at the Salón d’Actas, Casa de Cultura, Plaça Jaume 1, Denia. Doors open at 6.30pm. Entry is free – there is limited seating so those who wish to attend are advised to obtain tickets in advance from choir members, WhatsApp 634 302 469 or through the choir website (see below). The second performance of their Spring Concert is on Saturday 24th May at 5pm. This concert is at the Loreto Church (also known as the Fishermen’s Church) in Jávea Port. Doors open at 4.30pm. The musically wide-ranging programme for both concerts contains works by Mozart and John Rutter, the much loved Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, and traditional songs including the Skye Boat Song. The choir will be accompanied by Kirsty Glen. A retiring collection will be taken in aid of Caritas, the church’s charity that does such important and worthwhile work supporting local families in need.

We have more and more clients asking us to lay grass onto the pool terrace, terraces and other hard spaces. It’s no surprise as with all the gravel, all the terraces, all the costs of natural grass, more and more clients are looking at transforming their hard spaces into usable friendly comfortable green spaces with Artificial Grass.
It's quick and easy to install, so were not making mess at your home, and most importantly, gives so many garden spaces that life which they sometimes lack.
A common occurrence now is not just clients wanting to lay directly onto terraces around pools, but many clients who are having new tiling work done around their pools are cleverly getting the builder to put the new tiles on near the pool so they have some nice terrace area, but then they leave a section with the existing tiles or pre screeded concrete ready for grass, allowing us to create a green lawn area that never existed. It's cheaper than completing the whole job in tiles and offers so much more than just more tiles.
I am often surprised myself (despite doing this hundreds of times) just what an amazing WOW factor this simple transformation can make to gardens and terraces. So, if you’re thinking about having your terrace area re-done or simply want to lose some of the vast expanse of tiles and gravel, give us a call to green up your garden. It is something you will always enjoy and be happy you did. Artificial Grass Spain has an amazing collection of unbeatable grasses on offer simply give us a call to arrange a quotation.

The MABS Cancer Support Foundation was founded in 1999 and provides support to people with cancer on the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida regions. There are five stores in total: in Jávea, Oliva and Alfaz del Pi serving the Costa Blanca, as well as in San Javier and Totana, serving the Murcia region.
Last year (2024), MABS spent €380,000 supporting 525 cancer patients. Of this total:
• €192,341 was spent on providing home and nursing care in patients' homes.
• €83,976 was spent on translation for medical appointments and scheduling appointments.
• €43,583 was invested in the loan of equipment, such as hospital beds, wheelchairs, and patient lifts. This amount includes the purchase of new equipment, repairs, and pick-up and delivery services to patients' homes.
• €24,372 was spent providing drivers for medical appointments, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy, at hospitals in Benidorm, Valencia, Elche, and Madrid.
• €12,412 was contributed to cover treatment costs not covered by Social Security.
Currently, 335 volunteers give their time for free, whether in the shops, on administrative tasks, or organizing charity events. Thanks to the money raised through the sale of donated items in their shops, MABS is able to offer these services and proceeds from the Summer Show at Los Arcos will help us to continue doing so. This fundraiser is taking place on Wednesday 11 June at Los Arcos in Pedreguer with the fabulous "The Entertainers" doing exactly that! Tickets are available at the Javea shop, which is open Monday to Saturday, 10:00 until 13:00 and cost €10. You can bring your own picnic but drinks must be purchased at the bar. There will also be a little fun competition on the night for the best dressed table!
Additionally, on Sunday, May 4, MABS has organized a sponsored charity walk from the Albir anchor to the Altea port and back, with support from the city council.
If anyone diagnosed with or suffering from cancer needs help, they can call the helpline at 634 311 690 or visit their website at www.mabscancerfoundation.org.
Mimiskru is delighted to welcome Daria to the team – our very own fitness and health coach. Daria offers a wide range of holistic therapy treatments, including nutritional counselling, reflexology, and Pilates. Her speciality is Shiatsu massage – a holistic Japanese bodywork method rooted in the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. What is Shiatsu?
The word Shiatsu literally means “finger pressure.” It involves mindful pressure using the fingers, palms, or elbows along the body’s energy pathways – known as meridians – to stimulate and balance the flow of energy, or Qi, throughout the body.
At the heart of Shiatsu is the view of the human being as a whole – body, mind, and spirit. This method addresses not only physical symptoms but also emotional and mental wellbeing. It aims to release energetic blockages, support inner balance, and activate the body’s natural healing abilities.
Shiatsu is traditionally performed on a soft mat on the floor, but it can also be comfortably adapted for a massage table or treatment couch. At Mimiskru, we also offer a specially designed massage chair. This allows you to sit forward and upright, with your face resting in a soft support – ideal for those with limited mobility or anyone who prefers extra support during their session. Shiatsu is suitable for all ages and can be used for relaxation, preventive healthcare, or as a complement to treatment for concerns such as stress, insomnia, digestive issues, back pain, and psychosomatic symptoms. The gentle yet deeply effective touch not only brings physical relief but also enhances body awareness and emotional calm.
A typical Shiatsu session lasts between 50 and 60 minutes and is carried out fully clothed in comfortable attire. Each treatment is tailored to your individual needs, making it a unique and personal experience.
Shiatsu is more than just a massage – it’s an invitation to return to your body and reconnect with your inner balance. Come and meet Daria in her calm, private treatment room at Mimiskru Hair and Beauty.

One of the best ways to bring issues of women and equality to the public's attention is through art. Eighteen female artists from the Marina Alta have painted to the theme 'Unity in Diversity: highlighting the power of solidarity across cultures, generations and communities. Jenny Morrison, also a member of EUWMA, gives us a sneak peek of her painting 'Embracing Unique Differences' which she says is about the interconnectedness of life on this planet. 'We are all connected, and this piece shows a ‘Unity In Diversity’. My bright metallic colours meld from one figure to another, depicting different cultures from around the world. Painting is my passion, and I love experimenting, allowing the painting to guide me through a new and exciting adventure. To achieve my goals, I use brushes, spatulas, credit cards, sponges, and anything that will enhance the painting, with beautiful colours and movement.'
Emma Lawton, the curator (and one of the artists) of the exhibition invites residents and holiday makers alike to come and be inspired. 'This will be a festival of colour celebrating the diverse world we live in and reflecting the special light that fascinates the artists of the Marina Alta who come from far and wide to live here'. The exhibition will start with celebration as Voces de Gaia have been invited to perform.
Further details on the exhibition from Emma Lawton +34 648 05 29 11 (Tel/WhatsApp) or email: euwma.treasurer@gmail.com. For more information about EUWMA, see us on our website www.euwmarinaalta.org, on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/euwma and email euwmarinaalta@gmail.com.

The Phoenix Rising Spiritualists
Our aim to provide a new concept on Spiritual Gatherings. We meet at the Albir Social Centre, Calle San Miguel 1 Albir (Next to Mercadona), on Mondays from 16.00 to 18.00.
We look forward to welcoming you. Jane, Jaqui, Yvonne and Kenny. Enquiries: 681 64 68 71.
Let’s face it: you want to go for a walk. You really do. You imagine yourself striding purposefully through peaceful green paths, breathing in fresh air, smiling at a bird or two. But somehow, between work, social commitments, WhatsApp groups, laundry piles, and feeding the people (again!), a simple stroll feels like a luxury reserved for someone else’s life.
So how do we sneak more nature into our busy routines without having to fake our own disappearance?
1. Turn "I don’t have time" into "Let me find it" - You probably wouldn’t ghost a meeting with your boss or best-friend. So why ghost yourself? Walking isn’t just good for your body, it’s like hitting “refresh” on your brain. You don’t need a whole afternoon - just 30 minutes can make a difference. It’s about shifting your mindset: walking isn’t time away from life, it’s time for you.
2. Make it part of something else - Struggling to fit it in? Double up. Walk the kids to school instead of driving. Take work calls on foot. Suggest walking meetings instead of sitting in a stuffy room or, worse, another Zoom. Walk the dog - borrow one if needed. Walk to the shops, walk to the hairdresser. There's a reason we have legs!
3. Sneak it in like a rebel - Treat walking like a mini act of rebellion. Sneak out for 15 minutes before dinner. Step outside while everyone else is glued to Netflix. Even a wander round the block counts. It doesn’t have to be long or dramatic. Sometimes just putting your shoes on is the hardest part - after that, momentum does the rest.
4. Schedule it like it matters - because it does - Stick it in your calendar and protect it like it’s sacred. “Me time - 16:00” is just as valid as “Doctors appointment - 15:30.” The world won’t fall apart if you take a quick break to stretch your legs and your perspective.
5. Remember your why - Walking is more than just exercise. It’s peace. It’s perspective. It’s space to breathe when everything else feels too loud. And the best part? It’s free, doesn’t require Lycra, and you can do it while multi-tasking.
So go on - step outside. Even if it's just around the corner. The laundry will still be there when you get back (unfortunately). But your mindset? That might be completely different. If you want to walk with me, or in a group, you can follow me on Walk Your Way Well on Facebook and Instagram. WhatsApp +34 676 507 791.
Novelda is a relatively undiscovered town despite it's proximity to Alicante and only slightly over an hours drive from Calpe. It is particularly respected as a gem of 'Modernism', the artistic movement that was developed between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries.
First stop was the emblematic Sanctuary of Saint Mary Magdalene, situated 3 kilometres outside the town where we were able to inspect this very unusual building inside and out and admire the panoramic views. Some even braved the climb up to the nearby Mola Castle.
After a short coffee break we were taken to Novelda Town and left to explore the 'ruta turistica'. The Modernist House Museum was particularly stunning with rooms, furniture and exhibits restored to a wonderful quality and giving an insight into the lifestyle and aesthetics of the Modernist era, for the wealthy, at least! Other buildings visited were the Church of Saint Peter and the Casino Cultural Society..
We met as a group for menu del dia at Bon Profit - a restaurant specialising in local food- obviously popular with locals and visitors alike. Then, a gentle stroll in the sunshine took us back to the bus for our return to Calpe.
Our trips in May couldn't be more varied.... A theatre visit to Jávea Players' 'Beauty and the Beast' and Goat Trekking... more information on our website: www.u3acalpe.org.
The Costa Blanca Astronomical society are pleased to announce that Professor Emma Bunce of the University of Leicester in
Professor Emma Bunce OBE is the Director of the Institute for Space at the University of Leicester, and was President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 2020 to 2022. She is a planetary scientist involved in multiple space missions exploring our solar system including Cassini at Saturn, Juno at Jupiter, BepiColombo at Mercury, and the future JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) mission to Ganymede. She uses data from these missions to answer fundamental questions about these diverse solar system objects. She has received multiple awards in recognition of her work, the most recent of which is an OBE for “Services to Astronomy and Science Education” in the King’s New Year’s Honours List in 2023.
The subject of her talk, is Exploring Ocean Worlds. After just a few decades of space exploration with robotic spacecraft, we now have tantalising evidence that deep oceans of liquid water exist beneath the icy crusts of moons and dwarf planets in our solar system. This raises the question of the potential habitability of these extra-terrestrial environments, as life as we know it depends on the presence of liquid water. Two of the Galilean moons in the Jupiter system, Europa and Ganymede, are thought to harbour such underground oceans. Prof Bunce is part of the project team for this mission.
The talk will be given in English, and is open to anyone interested the subject and is on Saturday 17th May at the Beniarbeig Auditorium (google the name for directions) starting at 19:00. There is no entrance fee, and the theatre is large, so there is no need to reserve a seat.

On Saturday, 12th April, the Espai De La Senieta in Moraira provided the perfect setting for the inaugural Masonic Piano Recital, with guests gathering for an evening of exceptional classical music.
The event featured the internationally acclaimed Professor István Székely, alongside his talented students. Professor Székely, a distinguished figure in the music world, is a Professor at the Katerina Gurska Superior Conservatory in Madrid and the Franz Liszt Centre for Special Talents in La Nucia.
The recital lived up to everyone’s expectations, with timeless works by Mozart, Liszt, Debussy, and Chopin enchanting the audience. The evening concluded with a show-stopping Four-Hand Duet performed by student Anna and her teacher Carla, leaving guests captivated. Even attendees less familiar with classical music praised the performance for its beauty and artistry.
The event’s success has prompted plans to set up the recital as an annual highlight within the Valencian Masonic Charity calendar. Commenting on the evening, event organiser and Provincial Grand Charity Steward for Valencia, Peter Johnson, expressed his gratitude:
“I want to thank István and his team for giving their time free of charge tonight.
Charity stays at the heart of what Freemasons hold dearly and, not only have we all had a wonderfully entertaining evening, but we have also raised €940 for charitable causes.”
This memorable event has laid the foundation for what promises to become a cherished cultural tradition within the Valencian Masonic community.
