Sight loss affects millions of people around the world, and while some changes in vision are a natural part of ageing, others can be symptoms of more serious eye conditions. At Seepoint Opticians in Jávea, we’re committed to helping you protect your vision with expert care, modern technology, and friendly service. Understanding the types of sight loss can be the first step in preserving your eye health.
Central Vision Loss
Conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can affect your central vision - the part you use to read, recognise faces, or see fine detail. AMD is one of the most common causes of sight loss in people over 50 and usually progresses gradually. Regular eye checks can help detect it early, when lifestyle changes and treatment options may be more effective.
Peripheral Vision Loss
Often associated with glaucoma, peripheral vision loss affects your ability to see things out of the corners of your eyes. This can make driving or walking in crowded places more difficult. Glaucoma typically develops slowly and without pain, so many people don’t realise they have it until significant damage has occurred. Early detection is key to managing it.
Blurry or Distorted Vision
This can be caused by a number of conditions, including cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, or even something as simple as a change in your prescription. If straight lines begin to look wavy, or you notice halos around lights, it’s time to book an eye test.
Sudden Vision Loss
Any sudden change in your sight should be treated as a medical emergency. It could be linked to a retinal detachment, stroke, or acute glaucoma - all of which require urgent attention.
Why Visit Seepoint Opticians?
Regular eye examinations are essential for maintaining good eye health. At Seepoint Opticians, our experienced team offers thorough eye tests in a calm and welcoming environment. Whether you’re concerned about sight loss or just due for a routine check-up, we’re here to help. Don’t wait until something seems wrong - visit Seepoint Opticians in Jávea and book a Free Eye test today and take a proactive step in protecting your vision.
Have you ever paused to ask yourself: What would happen to my family if something happened to me? It’s a tough question—but one that deserves your attention.
At Jennifer Cunningham Insurance, we understand how important it is to protect the people you love. That’s why we offer Life and Mortgage Protection policies tailored to your unique needs, giving you peace of mind now and security for your family in the future.
Life Insurance vs. Mortgage Protection: What’s the Difference?
Life Insurance:
A Life Insurance policy pays your family a lump sum upon your death with an initial advance of 10%. Whether it’s to cover funeral expenses, help with day-to-day living costs, or provide a financial cushion for the future, this type of cover is designed to support your family when they need it most.
Key Features:
· Death-only cover with the option to enhance your policy to include:
· Repatriation
· Serious Illness Cover / Serious Female Illness Cover
· Permanent Total Disability
· Death by Accident / Traffic Accident
Constant capital sum insured – your coverage amount remains the same throughout the policy.
Cover available up to age 80, with the last entry age at 70.
Affordable Life Cover Example: €50,000 of cover for a 50-year-old from as little as €153 per year, or €14 per month.
You’re Unique – Your Protection Should Be Too Our Life Insurance policies can be customised with
additional benefits to match your lifestyle and risks. Want more than just death cover? We’ve got you.
Cover includes Death and Repatriation.
Mortgage Protection:
You may already have Mortgage Protection, which is a smart start. This policy ensures your mortgage is paid off if you pass away, helping your family stay in their home during a difficult time. You can also consider Critical Illness and Disability Coverage for more comprehensive protection.
Need mortgage payment protection too? For a 50-yearold, €100,000 of cover can cost as little as €305 per year—providing more protection and less stress.
Easy, Accessible, and in English
To apply, you simply need to be a resident in Spain and complete a short health/lifestyle questionnaire. Payments are manageable with monthly direct debit, and all support is provided in clear, easy-to-understand English.
Who Should Consider This Cover?
· Anyone with Dependents
· Those who may be responsible for Funeral Costs
· Self-Employed Individuals
· Homeowners with Mortgages
· People concerned about the financial impact of Serious Illness or Disability

Darling daughter and husband's Kabila were invited to take part in the Jávea Moors and Christians parade. Great I thought - a reason to go through and watch it. The grandchildren had other ideas as they said 'we do not need to watch mum and dad or any other Moors and Christians walking past in this heat when we can see them in Calpe in October'. I could not really argue with that logic. I know that the costumes are different but not enough to argue the point with sweaty a 10 and 6 year old!
I am enjoying your suggestions for salad options and realised that a lot of my restrictions were due to not using ingredients I don't think belong in a salad. As the whole point was to keep the other half happy with salads for as long as possible, I am now adding the funky stuff to his and leaving mine to normal salad ingredients. Why anyone would enjoy dried or fresh fruit in a salad is beyond me - comes close to the craziness of pineapple on a pizza or in a curry - it's just not right - but he is loving them so that is the main thing! I have found that adding any kind of cheese is also a winner, but especially goat's cheese. We have just returned from a week on the beach (under a parasol so still very pale) in Almeria - eating out, reading and generally relaxing and recharging the batteries. We did comment that we could do this whenever we wanted at home on the Costa Blanca but somehow holiday mode is different. Until next time, take care and be kind.

Well, the temperature gauge has hit the mid 30s. For this part of Spain, that’s not unusual, though the summer heat seemed to start earlier than normal. AEMET has already confirmed that June was the hottest for 64 years! It’s a good time to remember a few basics in order to deal with the heat.
1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Water is the best choice, and it’s important to drink before, during, and after any physical activity. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can dehydrate you.
2. Create a Cool Environment: Use air conditioning or fans to keep your home cool. Close curtains and blinds to block out direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day. Consider spending time in air-conditioned public places like shopping centres if your home isn’t cool enough.
3. Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in light colours. Light colours reflect sunlight, and breathable fabrics help with airflow. Hats and sunglasses also provide protection from the sun.
4. Limit Strenuous Activities: Avoid strenuous exercise or outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day. Choose early morning or late evening when it’s cooler. Take breaks in the shade and listen to your body.
5. Be Aware of Warning Signs: Know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke, such as headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. Seek help immediately if you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms.
What About Ciudad Patricia?
As a leading Independent Senior Living resort, Ciudad Patricia has learned how to create a cool environment for all its residents. Here’s how they make it easier to stay cool.
1. Need to cool off quickly? It’s hard to beat jumping into one of their well-maintained 4 outdoor pools to freshen up.
2. All apartments are air-conditioned and have awnings to create your own shade. The central building is air-conditioned throughout including reception, library and even the cinema. Saturday movie club is a great opportunity for a cool evening of entertainment and socialising!
3. Ciudad Patricia has a great team who can respond to medical needs quickly should the heat become too much. With our onresort doctor, resident’s care worker and a caring community, you’re never too far from getting help.
4. Ciudad Patricia is set in 100.000m² of greenery which includes an abundance of trees. Trees offer a cool environment for walks on hot days through shade and transpiration (the process where trees release water vapour, cools the surrounding air, creating a noticeable temperature difference).
5. There’s a Bar & Cafetería which has a beautiful covered terrace where you can enjoy a refreshing drink with friends, helping you stay cool and hydrated at the same time.
For more information about moving to Ciudad Patricia, contact Alison Eaves on 673 064 288 (a.eaves@ciudadpatricia.com).

Under the new law, all authorised short-term rental properties in Spain must be registered with the Land Registry (Registro de la Propiedad). The deadline was 1st July 2025. This requirement is now legally mandatory. If you missed the deadline please contact My Lawyer in Spain to organise for you as soon as possible. This article outlines the rules and documents needed.
Spain has recently introduced new regulations that impact owners of short-term rental properties. If you rent out your property on a short-term basis, this update may directly affect you.
Under the new law, all authorised short-term rental properties in Spain must be registered with the Land Registry (Registro de la Propiedad) by 1st July 2025. This requirement is now legally mandatory
Property owners who fail to comply by the deadline may face penalties or restrictions on continuing rental activity
Registration is therefore essential to ensure that you remain compliant and avoid potential legal or financial consequences.
Our Registration Service
To help property owners meet this obligation, the team at My Lawyer in Spain offers a complete registration service, which includes:
• Preparing and submitting all necessary documentation
• Obtaining the relevant certificate from the Land Registry
• Ensuring your property is fully compliant with the updated regulations
The total cost is €269, which includes legal fees, VAT, and Land Registry charges.
Our legal team works with property owners throughout Spain, including all mainland provinces, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands. We are familiar with both national requirements and regional variations.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an NRA?
NRA stands for Número de Registro de Alquiler – this is the national rental licence number issued by the corresponding Land Registry once your property has been registered as a rental unit. It is required to publish your listing on short-term rental platforms (Rentalia, Booking, Airbnb, etc.).
Through a single registration procedure, managed by the Land Registry, it is possible to obtain a unique registration number. Is this required for all types of rental properties?
The NRA is required for certain types of rentals — the socalled short-term rentals — such as tourist accommodations or seasonal lets. However, the exact definition of 'short-term rental' depends on the specific regulations of each autonomous community. Long-term residential rentals (typically 12 months or more) are not affected.
How long does the registration process take?
Typically, registration is completed within 2 weeks. However, in some cases, the provisional NRA may be received within 24 to 48 hours, depending on the workload and responsiveness of the local Land Registry office.
What documents or information do I need to provide?
To begin the process, you’ll usually need:
• Property details
• Your NIE
• Your short-term rental licence, if applicable
Our team will guide you through each step and advise if
continued on next page
additional documentation is required for your specific region. Can I register multiple properties at once?
Yes. If you own multiple short-term rental properties, we can assist with registering each of them. Contact us to discuss bundled support and documentation required.
Can I register a property as both a tourist and a non-tourist rental unit?
Yes. If the region where your property is located permits renting the property for both types of rental, you can obtain two different NRAs—one for each type of rental.
Is this registration different from the tourist licence I already have?
Yes. Your tourist licence (NRA) is issued by the regional government. This new requirement involves registering your authorised rental activity with the national Land Registry. It’s an additional legal obligation, not a substitute. Is this registration different from the tourist rental licence I already have?
Yes. While this registration involves obtaining a unique registration number issued by the corresponding Land Registry, it is different from the regional tourist licence number issued by the regional government. This new Land Registry registration is a separate, additional legal requirement and does not replace your existing regional tourist licence
Can I still rent out my property while the registration is in progress?
Yes, as long as your property is already authorised (i.e. you have a valid tourist license, if applicable). However, once the July 1st, 2025 deadline passes, proof of registration at the Land Registry may be
required to continue legally advertising or renting the property.
What is a Provisional
When you submit your short-term rental application, you are often issued a Provisional NRA. This is a temporary registration number that allows you to start advertising and renting your property while your application is being processed. Once fully authorised, your property will be assigned the same number permanently, so you can safely use the Provisional NRA in the meantime.
Do I need to be in Spain to complete the registration?
No. If you’re not currently in Spain, you can sign a Power of Attorney, allowing us to complete the registration process on your behalf. Alternatively, a digital certificate can be used. We assist many non-resident owners this way.
What happens if I don’t register my property by the deadline? Failure to comply may result in:
• Fines or penalties
• Restrictions on advertising or renting the property
• Potential issues when selling or transferring ownership
We recommend registering as early as possible to avoid these complications.
We highly recommend starting the registration process as soon as possible to avoid last-minute issues and ensure uninterrupted rental activity.

Let's start at the beginning, all those lovely pictures you see of things in the heavens aren't called photographs, they're images and the reason for the name change is a very good one that I'll get to shortly.
I'll begin over 50 years ago when I was a youngster working part of my holidays as a gofer in a small observatory. A major part of my job was to process the photo plates produced by real astronomers, these were 5x7 inch negatives. Each plate would be the result of a long time in a special receiver attached to a telescope that had a clock drive to keep it trained on a particular part of the sky.
Those days are long gone, for many years now we've been doing things electronically with special cameras attached to telescopes that have electric drives. For most of my life these have needed some degree of setting up, care and maintenance with expensive gear to keep everything working well, but they have produced results that we could only dream of all those years ago. Moving on again amateurs began using electronic cameras, and home computers and before you knew it amateurs were making images that the 200 inch Mount Palomar observatory would have dreamed about all those years ago.
The secret to this success, and also why we don't call the images photographs, is that what you see is the result of many individual photographs, sometimes thousands, overlaid on top of each other to produce a finished image, this is called stacking. So, what has changed recently? There have been a number of relatively cheap digital astrocams introduced that do so much of the donkey work automatically, and are controlled by your smartphone. They can find and track an object in the sky, keep it precisely in view and take a photo every so often and store it ready for processing in your computer. By cheap I mean from around 300€ upwards, the Seestar S50 costs around 600€ and is being used by a couple of our members ( I'm making no claims about this being good or the best model) and is turning out some remarkable pictures of the deep sky (galaxies and nebula, not planets). If you want a piece of equipment that's large and impressive, you'll be disappointed, these cameras are small with tiny tripods which is part of what makes them so special.
There is always a 'but' with astronomy, in this case it's the time spent on each image to produce a decent result. It takes time and skill to produce an end result and if you try one you'll have a learning curve and hours spent in front of your computer, but if you love astronomy, it's worth it.
Today's picture was made by my friend Ron using a Seestar s50 and is of the witches broom nebula in Cygnus, it's very beautiful.

Fifty years ago, in the heart of Calpe, a small newsstand opened its doors within a family business that would mark generations: Galerías Maruja. With effort, love, and a vision for the future, that corner transformed over time, giving rise to two unique spaces: Galerías Maruja, dedicated to top-brand fashion, and Papelería Maruja, a convenience store designed for the daily lives of residents and visitors. Today we celebrate half a century of offering much more than products: we've been part of your summers, your walks along the seafront, your mornings spent sipping coffee and grabbing a newspaper, your last-minute shopping trips, and your impromptu moments. From snacks, soft drinks, and stationery to magazines, lottery tickets, or that souvenir you take home... at Papelería Maruja, we've always had something for you.
Thank you to those who have trusted us since day one, to those who return every summer, and to those who visit for the first time and take a little piece of Calpe with you.
Fifty years aren't celebrated every day. That's why, today more than ever, we want to say: Thank you for being part of this story!
Whether you live in Spain full-time or own a second home, having the right home insurance is essential. Although not legally required unless you have a mortgage, it provides peace of mind and protects against costly damage or unexpected events.
At Generali Expatriates, we understand buying insurance abroad can be confusing. Here are five common questions about home insurance in Spain to help you make informed decisions.
1. Is home insurance compulsory in Spain?
No, except if you have a mortgage. Then, lenders usually require buildings insurance (covering the structure) as part of the loan conditions.
You are free to choose any insurer; you don’t have to take the policy with your bank, as long as the policy meets the minimum coverage required by the lender. Even without a mortgage, home insurance is highly recommended—especially if you rent out your property or leave it unoccupied for long periods. Generali Expatriates offers flexible policies, so you pay only for the cover you need. If you are unsure about your protection, our expat experts can help tailor a suitable policy without unnecessary extras.
2. How do I know how much contents insurance I need? It depends on your belongings—from kitchen appliances and clothes to garden furniture. Valuables like jewellery may require separate declaration.
Generali Expatriates advisors can help estimate realistic amounts and specific requirements.
3. What is the “excess” in my policy?
The excess is what you pay toward a claim before the insurer covers the rest. For example, with a €100 excess on a €500 repair, the insurer pays €400.
Choosing a higher excess can lower your premium—useful if you don’t expect to claim often.
4. Does home insurance include Public Liability?
Some policies include Public Liability, especially with contents insurance. This protects you if someone is injured or their property damaged due to your home (for example, water damage to a neighbour). Coverage varies by insurer and policy.
Generali Expatriates includes Public Liability automatically with contents cover, with an option to extend up to €1 million.
5. Is dog liability covered?
Dog owners are legally responsible for damage their pets cause. Coverage depends on the insurer and policy details; sometimes it’s included under Public Liability if you have contents cover.
Generali Expatriates covers liability for your dog if the legal owner lives at the insured address. For “potentially dangerous breeds,” specific Public Liability cover is required and can be arranged via your policy. Just declare your dog when insuring.
Something as important and valuable as your home in Spain deserves the right protection, so we always recommend seeking advice from a qualified insurance advisor.

A dazzling smile can light up a room, and at Clinica Dental La Plaza, we specialise in helping you achieve one. Whether it’s whitening, repairing, or restoring your teeth, our clinic is the ultimate destination for all your dental needs.
Teeth whitening often gets a bad reputation, but modern techniques make it possible to safely and effectively brighten your smile. Discolouration can result from various factors such as smoking, red wine, or antibiotics taken during childhood. Even non-vital teeth or enamel issues can lead to uneven colouring. Whatever the cause, our expert team provides personalised solutions to give you back your confidence.
Research has shown that applying low concentrations of whitening agents over time is more effective and less likely to cause sensitivity than laser whitening. At Clinica Dental La Plaza, we create custom-moulded trays to fit your teeth perfectly. These trays allow you to whiten your teeth at home over one to two weeks, achieving natural, long-lasting results. With proper care, your teeth can remain bright for years to come.
Unlike the artificial-looking veneers often seen in celebrities, our whitening methods ensure your teeth stay natural-looking, matching the whites of your eyes for the most authentic effect. While bleaching cannot lighten crowns or fillings, our professional treatments can address the natural enamel, leaving you with a radiant smile you’ll love.
But we don’t stop at whitening. At Clinica Dental La Plaza, we provide a full range of dental services, from routine check-ups to complex restorative procedures. Whether it’s resolving gum issues, repairing chips, or replacing missing teeth, our experienced team uses stateof-the-art technology and techniques to keep your smile healthy and beautiful.

Well, it's official, we've been installing Artificial Grass for 20 years here on the Costa Blanca. Just imagine that for a moment. Anyone who has been in any career for any length of time knows that these are big numbers. Add to that the decade of garden design and landscaping experience I have to that and you start to pull a strong picture of a company that has experience. Proper experience of designing, creating and executing landscape works and artificial grass projects with the level you would expect from a seasoned contractor.
I have just recently sent a quote to a client, and I wanted to see what they thought. They are happy to proceed with us despite our quote being nearly double the cost of the cheapest quote. As a seasoned contractor these numbers don’t upset me, but they do make me fearful. Not for me or my business but for our potential clients. And here’s why.
Because of our experience we know we can accurately quote for artificial grass in our clients gardens. How long it will take, what we need to do or not do, and the full logistics behind each project. I also know that we make almost nothing off the top of our material costs as unfortunately it’s not like the UK and we just don’t get the discounts like a UK contractor would. We make money off our labour which is correct, especially when you are talking about an experienced contractor and we make money off our grass product which we are a distributor for.
We know our retail price for our grass is almost unrivalled and our experience allows us to keep our number of man days on a project down and more accurate, so how on earth can someone do a cheaper price. Even if we have a more expensive labour rate, it wouldn't make a big difference at the end of the day. So, you as a client have to start to add up. Where can they make these savings? And that is the point right there. They will not be doing the same project as we would. Somewhere down the line they will be cutting corners. They may not be using as much sub base material or creating the correct edging. They may not be removing the old grass (bad idea) they are most likely using a sub standard grass product. The simple fact is that somewhere down the line no matter how you want to look at it, you will be losing out as a client. You will not be getting the same quality product, with the same quality sub base structure and they may even be illegal workers. As a company that has been doing this now for 20 years I can guarantee that, as the old saying goes, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
I have unfortunately seen many grass projects where things haven’t been done right. Some clients are fortunate enough to have enough money to correct it and sometimes even re-do the whole thing. But many don’t. Please don’t assume when someone gives you a quote to do a project that it is, a like for like quote. Because when it’s like that, you can pretty much guarantee it isn’t. Use a company you can trust who has been doing this work reliably and successfully for its clients for two decades. It matters to get it right.

The Aircrew Association Costa Blanca bade farewell to one of its founder Members, Life Vice President and former President and Chairman, Peter Langley, at a Memorial Service held at Javea Crematorium on Tuesday, 15th July.
Family, friends and representatives of some of the many organisations of which Peter had been an active member were also present. They included: RAFA North Costa Blanca; The Levante Council of the Navy League of the USA; The Royal Society of St George; and the Royal British Legion.
Janette Galbraith was the Celebrant of the Service and, following her Welcome, Peter’s grandson, Quentin, gave his moving view of the life of his grandfather, ‘Pops’! Alastair Wallace, a neighbour and friend recited the highly appropriate poem, Look to This Day by Kalidasa and Max Maxwell, the Chairman of the Aircrew Association, gave his Reflections of the Peter Langley he knew. Peter had celebrated his 100th birthday last year on the 24th October. This amazing character had lived a full and interesting life! A life filled with much excitement: flying hours that amassed to over 20,000 hours; operational tours whilst serving in the RAF that earned him a richly deserved DFC; an opportunity to fly the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip on a tour of India; whilst temporarily manning and Anti-Aircraft Gun at RAF Fairoaks in Surrey on the 19th June 1944, he shot down a V1 flying bomb; and, having flown for civil airlines for 18 years after he left the RAF and having stopped flying on his 60th birthday in 1984, he eventually retired to live permanently in Jávea. In Jávea, Peter continued to take an active part in many organisations and lived an energetic, life until near the end when he had begun to feel and show his years! Peter was a much admired, respected and loved personality. His memorial service, followed by a lovely reception was a super Farewell and Salute to a man who had lived his incredible life to the full! RIP Peter!

This unique organisation of women has a special purpose, to bring together the people of Europe in peace and prosperity through co-operation and friendship.
We believe we are stronger together: women who support each other through hard times make the world a better place.
Just one “for instance”, the European Union of Women Marina Alta, appealed for assistance, for someone who is having to start again in middle age, from scratch, and, as she so often does, Heidi, of PC Highway, came to the rescue and gave us a complete computer system, which has helped our new friend immensely. Heidi is one of Jávea's earth angels. She helps so many people who are homeless or struggling, always with great empathy and a kind word of encouragement. She also runs an ethical business, so we can all help her to help others. In July, our monthly event showcased an intriguing story of the lives of Centenarians, and unlocked elements of the mysteries of us living healthily and happily, to a ripe old age. In her introduction, vice president Marion Oprel listed some of the characteristics identified as the 'secret' to a long and healthy life and the film from Blue Zones showed a fascinating analysis of those 'secrets'.
However, the interviews with Captain Peter Langley of Jávea and Emilia Pascual Pastor of Benitachell stole the show. 'Their
frankness brought laughter and tears in equal measure from us all and led to a thoughtful discussion of healthy living for 100 years' said President Margaret Hales. Margaret thanked the team who made the day possible, including those who interviewed Peter and Emilia.
The European Union of Women Marina Alta send their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Captain Peter Langley who, sadly, passed away recently. We were privileged to interview Peter, and we are sure he would like us to continue to report on the excellent meeting we had with him, centre stage, in this video interview.
Come and join us this Autumn, without cost or obligation, and if you like what we are achieving, you can join as a member, for just 15 euros per year! Interested in keeping up to date with our constant progress, knowing first-hand about forthcoming events and being a part of our success in the Marina Alta area and beyond, then it’s a great time to contact us.
We would love to hear from you!
European Union of Women Marina Alta (EUWMA) members, friends and newcomers are all welcome. Contact us on 658530138 or email euwmarinaalta@gmail.com or find out more on our website www.euwmarinaalta.org or Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/euwma.

Cáritas organisers Marcela Fitzgerald and Maria-Carmen Sellan met Choir Director Aileen Lightfoot and the choir Steering Group outside the church to receive the cheque. A date for diaries!... this year Montgó Chorale will be presenting their traditional Christmas concert at the Loreto Church on 13th December... Further details will be announced nearer the time.
The Teulada Moraira Lions celebrated the handover to their new president Philip Butterworth. Philip has been an active member of the Lions for many years and a previous president, so he is in the perfect position to continue the high standards and achievements set by the outgoing president David Harmer.
Philip thanked David for his tireless efforts and deep commitment to the Lions, and acknowledged what a great honour and responsibility it was and he would continue to bring a sensitive approach to serving the local community, but emphasising he will have his own style. Philip acknowledged the first class teamwork of the Teulada Moraira Lions and how he is looking forward to continued and ongoing success. Mary Heaviland is to become Philip's new vice President, and is looking forward to her new enhanced role heading up an expanded fundraising committee so that the Lions can continue to support and help people within our community. As always the Teulada Moraira Lions are always looking for dedicated volunteers, either to become members of The Lions group or to help out in the The Lions Den charity shop in Moraira. If you have a few hours a week to spare and would like to contribute positively to your community please contact either Philip WhatsApp 626 412 121 or Mary WhatsApp 623 559 742.
At just 20 years old, Aran O’Sheehan is proving that courage, compassion, and community spirit aren't bound by age.
This summer, Aran has taken on an epic challenge: cycling the entire 2,500km of Ireland’s rugged and breathtaking Wild Atlantic Way. But he’s not doing it for personal glory - he’s doing it to raise €2,500 for Cancer Care Jávea, a local charity in Spain that provides free nursing support to cancer patients and their families.
As many of us know, cancer doesn’t just affect one person - it touches everyone around them. Aran’s decision to take on this demanding journey was inspired by personal experience and a deep respect for the team of nurses who quietly and compassionately show up for others when they’re needed most.
Young People Doing Big Things
In a time when young people often get a bad rap for being glued to their phones or lacking direction, Aran’s story is a beautiful reminder of just how capable, thoughtful, and motivated this generation can be. He’s not waiting for someone else to make a difference - he’s leading by example. With a tent on his back, pedals under his feet, and purpose in his heart, Aran is cycling every kilometre to raise awareness and vital funds for a cause close to home. Along the way, he’s inviting 25 businesses to become Pedal Partners - each donating €100 to help him hit his goal. In return, they get a fun shout-out on his uplifting and well-followed social media: @AransAdventures on Instagram and Facebook. How You Can Help
Follow his journey: @AransAdventures on Instagram & Facebook and tell your friends. Sponsor a day: If you’re a business owner, become a Pedal Partner. Message Aran for more details by WhatsApp +34 665 633 633.
Donate what you can: Every euro helps, and every share counts.
This isn’t just a bike ride - it’s a powerful reminder of what can happen when one young person decides to do something meaningful. Let’s get behind him and show the true strength of community and kindness.

The Entertainers have been busy performing their new songs starting at Los Arcos, performing for MABS Javea who raised €1,800 for their cancer care work, then supporting U3A Vall del Pop in raising €1,651 for the Goodwill teams charity fund, and at Salones Moli Canyar in Potries for the Gandia & Oliva Social.
The Entertainers once again showed their great versatility, with all six members offering a wide variety of songs and dancing to each song to encourage everyone to get up and dance. The Entertainers present something for everyone, to encourage guests to get up and dance or to sing along to songs and memories of the past. Their new repertoire of songs, together with a few old favourites, gave something for everyone to sing or hum as they headed home at the end of these wonderful evenings.
These were wonderful evenings of good company, with wonderful music and dance and opportunities to raise money for deserving causes.
The Entertainers next shows are:
28th August - Benidoleig Pool Bar
11th September - Royal British Legion at Los Arcos
14th September - APROP Animal Charity at Los Arcos
20th September - Campello Bowls Club
26th September - U3A Denia at Los Arcos

Looking for something different to do with friends or family this month rather than another day on the beach or round the pool - here are some suggestions.
On the evenings of 8 and 9 August, Hondón de las Nieves will be filled with colour, creativity, and tradition with the tenth edition of its Arts and Crafts Fair. This well-established event transforms the village’s centre into a vibrant space where you can discover authentic craftsmanship.
Some twenty stalls will offer unique pieces under the Artesanía de Autor® seal (meaning that the “author” of each item is the same person who is selling it), made by artisans who master their craft and share it with those who come to their stalls. There will be plenty to choose from, as each stall will offer something different, from ceramics to leather goods, natural cosmetics, jewellery made of various materials, watercolours, paintings, pumpkin lamps, and much more.
Throughout the two evenings, there will also be workshops for children, pottery and basketry demonstrations, while the little ones (and their parents!) will be entertained with storytelling, puppet shows and table games.
As in previous years, some local residents will participate, who add to the atmosphere with their colourful stalls and help shape this festive event.
The fair is organised by the Town Council and Amata, a regional crafts association which has been working for more than 25 years to raise awareness of authentic crafts, those that are not mass-produced, nor found in large stores.
The fair will open on Friday, 8 and Saturday 9 August from 7pm until midnight. On Saturday, after the market closes, you can watch the traditional correfocs (fire run), one of the most anticipated moments of the festivities.
More information and the full programme of the fair can be found at: www.puebloartesano.es/hondondelasnieves.
The Festa Major de Gràcia 2025 will take place in Barcelona’s vibrant Gràcia district from August 15 to 21, transforming the neighbourhood into a kaleidoscope of themed street art, music, and Catalan tradition.
Residents devote months to crafting elaborate installations across 23 decorated streets and plazas, each competing for the coveted prize for best decoration.
This free public festival includes nearly 900 activities, ranging from live concerts and children’s foam parties to open-air cinema, gastronomic events like butifarrada, traditional havaneres performances, and exhibitions.
Community spirit shines in cultural highlights such as the Cercavila de Cultura Popular, the Diada Castellera (human towers), and the thrilling Correfoc fire-run that closes the festivities with sparking pyrotechnics in the streets.
Accessibility and inclusion are emphasised this year too—guided routes, sign language and audio-description options, and sensory-adapted experiences ensure that everyone can participate fully in the event.
Walkable from central Barcelona Gràcia’s Festa Major offers an infectious atmosphere: creativity, community, tradition, and summer joy all woven into one spectacular local celebration.
The Feria de Málaga 2025, also known as Feria de Agosto, is set to unfold from August 16 to 23, with the traditional opening fireworks and the Cabalgata Histórica launching the festivities the night of August 15.
Across eight days, the city vibrates with Andalusian soul and cosmopolitan flair. The Day Fair transforms the historic centre - especially Calle Larios, Plaza de la Constitución, Plaza de la Merced - with music, dance, flower-adorned streets, and folk groups such as verdiales. Locals and visitors alike don traditional flamenco attire as they enjoy tapas and Cartojal wine in open-air casetas.
When the sun sets, the celebration shifts to the Real del Cortijo de Torres, the Night Fair. This is where around 250 illuminated casetas, carnival rides, children’s activities, concerts in the auditorio, and flamenco performances dominate the evening ambiance, continuing into the early morning hours.
The official opening speech (pregón) will be delivered on the night of August 16 by celebrated Málaga-born writer Javier Castillo, adding a cultural flourish to the fair’s opening ceremony.
Tradition and innovation blend further through the programming: a daytime romería to the Basilica of La Victoria, free concerts, and a newly launched “Deporte en Feria” itinerary offering yoga, pickleball, nocturnal beach runs, regattas, and more across iconic Malaga venues.
Altogether, Feria de Málaga 2025 promises music, dance, colour, food and welcoming energy - a signature Andalusian celebration that mixes history, festivity, culture, and community in a spectacular setting.
Every last Wednesday of August, the small town of Buñol (≈40 km from Valencia) transforms into a crimson battlefield for La Tomatina, dubbed the world’s largest food fight. In 2025, it falls on Wednesday, August 27. The origins date back to 1945, when an impromptu scuffle during a local parade escalated into a tomato fight, sparked by youths grabbing tomatoes from a market stall.
Festivities begin early in the town square, featuring music, a palo jabón challenge - a slippery greased pole topped with ham - and water bucket tosses from balconies. At 11am, trucks unload 100–150+ tons of overripe tomatoes (cultivated specifically for the event and unfit for consumption), and the tomato-throwing frenzy officially begins with a cannon blast. Participants cheerfully fling tomatoes for exactly one hour, until a second blast signals the end.
Attendance is capped at 20,000-22,000 paid participants to ensure safety and manage crowds, while Buñol locals enjoy free entry. Tickets typically cost around €15 for non-residents of the town and need to be purchased online in advance. Safety rules include: Only tomatoes may be thrown. Crush them first to avoid injuries. Don’t tear others’ clothes. Avoid targeting trucks or buildings. Stop when the final signal sounds.
After cleanup by fire crews and local volunteers, many participants rinse off using communal hoses. Surprisingly, the acetic nature of the tomato residue leaves Buñol’s cobblestone streets cleaner than before the event.
La Tomatina is more than a silly food fight - it's a cultural institution, declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest in 2002. Today, it draws crowds from around the globe for a unique, unforgettable splash of joyous chaos.
If you want to see a bit more of Spain than the beach and the terrace of your favourite bar or restaurant, and have a taste of real Spanish life and culture, you could go inland and visit a local arts and crafts fair or participate in a typical Spanish fiesta. But where do you find a village that is not yet spoiled by international tourism and that offers you both at the same time? If you don’t mind driving just over an hour along the Alicante-Madrid motorway, you could visit Alpera in the province of Albacete. On 12 and 13 August, in the midst of their San Roque festivities, Alpera’s Church Square will come alive with an Arts and Crafts Fair. This is a new initiative in the village, organised by the Town Hall and Amata, an artisan association that seeks to bring authentic crafts to residents and visitors.
During both days, you can browse more than 20 stalls with pieces that are hand made by the same person who sells them and follow the parades of a local juggler. Children can participate in workshops, enjoy soap bubble shows, play board games, or a have a ride on a carousel. There will be activities designed for all audiences, from the little ones to those looking for unique gifts or special pieces for their homes.
There will be a lot to choose from: decorative and utilitarian ceramics, wooden toys, leaded glass decorations, leather accessories, artisan soaps, wood carvings, and silver jewellery - all handmade and lovingly presented. No imports or factory-made items: at this fair, every piece has a story. What better souvenir to take home? After visiting the fair you could immerse yourself in the festive activities, or drive about 30 kms on to Alcalá del Júcar, which is one of the most beautiful villages of Spain and boasts: a castle, a river with waterfalls and a real beach, cave houses, a roman bridge and streets that are so narrow that you can touch the houses on both sides at the same time! If you want to stay over, there are plenty of possibilities in Alcalá del Júcar, from simple B&Bs to 5 star resorts. The fair in Alpera will be open on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 of August, from 11am until 2pm and from 7pm until 11pm or later, depending on the atmosphere.
More information and the full programme (in Spanish and English) can be found at: www.puebloartesano.es/alpera
Using sunscreen is a crucial part of maintaining healthy skin and preventing long-term damage caused by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunscreen acts as a protective barrier, shielding the skin from both UVA and UVB radiation.
UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburn and can directly damage the DNA in skin cells, leading to skin cancer. UVA rays, though less intense, penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to premature aging, wrinkles, and also play a role in skin cancer development.
To ensure effective protection, sunscreen should be applied generously to all exposed skin about 15–30 minutes before sun exposure. It’s not enough to apply it just once. Reapplication is key - every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating heavily, even if the product is labelled "water-resistant. Neglecting to reapply can leave the skin vulnerable to damage from the sun, reducing the sunscreen's ability to protect effectively.
When choosing a sunscreen, it's essential to select one labelled “broad-spectrum”, meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. A Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher is generally recommended for daily use. While SPF primarily measures UVB protection, broad-spectrum products are formulated to provide balanced protection from UVA as well.
Sunscreen Use and Vitamin D Absorption
A common concern about sunscreen use is whether it interferes with the body’s ability to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for bone health, immune function, and overall wellbeing. It is produced in the skin through a chemical reaction that occurs when UVB rays from sunlight are absorbed. Since sunscreen is designed to block or absorb UVB radiation, it can theoretically reduce the amount of vitamin D your skin produces. However, studies have shown that normal, daily use of sunscreen - even with high SPF - has minimal impact on vitamin D levels for most people. This is because most people don’t apply sunscreen perfectly or uniformly, and small amounts of UVB exposure still reach the skin. Additionally, incidental sun exposure (like walking to your car or sitting by a window) often provides enough UVB for adequate vitamin D synthesis.
For people with limited sun exposure, darker skin, or those living in areas with long winters, it may be harder to maintain healthy vitamin D levels. In such cases, a vitamin D-rich diet (e.g., fatty fish, eggs, fortified foods) or supplements can help meet the body’s needs without increasing skin cancer risk.
The bottom line is: you don’t need to skip sunscreen to get enough vitamin D. Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays helps prevent sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. If you're concerned about vitamin D levels, speak with your healthcare provider - they can recommend safe ways to ensure you get enough, without compromising your skin health.

Noa is a playful 5 year old Akita cross. Full of fun and energy, she enjoys playing with her toys and loves to be fussed over. You will never tire of her quirkiness, her joy from a squeaky toy or a tugging game. Noa walks well on a lead when out but would love to play in a private secure fenced garden. Noa will need to be the only pet in the home. For more information please contact APASA on 966 463 976.

As the sun blazes through the long days of July and August, life in the Walk Your Way Well community takes on a slower pace. The intense heat of summer means group walks and wellness gatherings are paused - it’s simply too hot to gather en masse, and safety always comes first. But just because the community calendar is quieter doesn’t mean we stop moving. You’ll still find me, Niamh - your positive psychology coach and walking enthusiast - out and about early in the morning or later in the evening, making the most of the cooler hours to get in my daily steps. I know many of you are doing the same - walking at dawn, swimming at dusk, taking life a little slower, but still honouring your wellbeing.
This season, I like to think of summer as “the calm before the autumn storm.” A gentle pause. A chance to rest, recharge, and reconnect with ourselves before we ramp up again. And ramp up we will!
From September onwards, Walk Your Way Well will return with a full calendar of uplifting, engaging and energising events. Expect:
Scenic group walks - Heartfelt chats and wellness talks - Mindful movement and excursions in nature - Opportunities to explore, connect, and care for yourself.
The focus, as always, will be on movement, connection, and self-kindness - values that guide everything we do. If you’d like to be kept in the loop, we’ve made it easy: Join the “Walk Your Way Well Alerts” WhatsApp group - an info-only space where I post updates about upcoming events, no chat or noise. Message me today +34 676 507 791.
So for now, keep moving in your own way. Keep cool, keep well - and know that I’ll be right here, planning a beautiful season of events to help us all walk our way well through autumn and beyond.
This is the twelfth year running that Amata (the regional craft association) joins forces with the local shopkeepers to liven up the promenade along the sea front with a craft fair. A real craft fair, with real craft workers who make what they sell and hope to sell what they make. Amata has the slogan "Artesanía de Autor®"which means that what you see is made by the man or woman on the stall - nothing imported, nothing made by friends or from a small factory. Amata was set up in 1998 and remains true to its original philosophy, which is that only goods made by the people on the stalls can be sold on the craft fairs it organises. That is why more and more aficionados have come to appreciate this special quality - the quality of a gallery even if it is sold in the street from a stall. Several stalls come for the whole summer, others just a few weeks so as to combine a holiday at the beach with the possibility of earning a living. It's a varied show, week by week. Never boring.
A visit to the market can be combined with a stroll to the port (with its fishing boats and fish market) and back along the promenade with its attractive bars and restaurants, shops and terraces, to enjoy the cool sea breezes and watch all the other visitors walking, jogging and cycling along. And, if you like modern architecture, you can have a look at the Virgen de Loreto church, a concrete structure shaped like a ship! You can even get to the market in the tourist train that runs every hour between the Arenal beach of Jávea and the Old Town: there is a stop right at the fair!
The market opens every evening (except for a few days when the locals celebrate their fiestas) at 7pm in the evening until midnight.
News about the fair is published on Instagram (@javea.artesania.amata), Facebook (@feriaartesaniajavea), and at https://www.puebloartesano.es/javea
Come and see for yourself the difference with other beach fairs!
