Frank M. and Dorothea Henry Cancer Center
The Frank M. and Dorothea Henry Cancer Center (HCC) at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center has undergone a transformative expansion to meet the growing demand for advanced oncology services in Northeast Pennsylvania. Originally designed by FCA, the newly completed five-story, 104,000-square-foot addition enhances patient care, expands treatment capacity, and reimagines the hospital’s main entrance.
This expansion builds on the success of the original facility, which allowed patients to receive care close to home rather than traveling long distances. The new addition reflects Geisinger’s continued commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care rooted in its founding mission: “Make my hospital right, make it the best,” as Abigail Geisinger once said.

Design Highlights
The expansion redefines the hospital’s entry sequence with a new drop-off circle, improved traffic flow, and seamless integration with the existing facility. A transparent, two-story lobby with an undulating façade welcomes patients and improves wayfinding. Fritted glass and wood-like finishes echo the natural setting, while interior spaces offer quiet areas for staff and patients to decompress.
Inspired by biophilic design, the interiors feature abstract mountain imagery, natural textures, and calming colors. Patient rooms are oriented toward views of the surrounding landscape, enhancing comfort during extended stays. The building also includes a staff respite space for meditation and relaxation.

44 infusion bays and 6 apheresis treatment rooms
18 private inpatient acuity-adaptable suites, including 4 designed for bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients
45-room multi-specialty exam and procedure suite
Radiation oncology suite with two linear accelerators and a CyberKnife S7
Medical and surgical oncology clinics, palliative care, and gynecologic oncology
Retail pharmacy, Goodness Bar Café, Hydra Health, and Women’s Imaging Suite

Technology & Care Innovation
The third floor nearly doubles the size of the infusion center and centralizes check-in for radiation oncology. The fourth floor supports multidisciplinary clinics and clinical research, while the fifth-floor houses critical care oncology beds with protective isolation suites for immunocompromised patients.
Community Impact
This expansion ensures that caregivers at Geisinger’s Henry Cancer Center can reach more patients with the compassionate care they bring every day. It strengthens Geisinger’s role as a leading healthcare provider in the region and fulfills its promise to deliver cutting-edge treatment options in a healing, nature-connected environment.

Virtua Virtua Samson Cancer Center

Virtua wanted to relocate their Cancer Care from an outdated existing hospital to a new facility that would incorporate the latest technology; a facility that would improve the delivery of cancer treatment to patients as well as provide a community health care resource. Virtua selected an old Acme Supermarket adjacent to their new Health and Wellness center as the project site. The existing facility was built to suit the intended supermarket retail function with a very large footprint to perimeter ratio and very high floor to ceiling height.
The new proposed Cancer Center program consisted of smaller rooms that required acoustic privacy and regular ceiling heights. The main design goal was to provide a soothing patient experience within a very large footprint without overwhelming patients and their caregivers. The design team strategically placed treatment rooms to serve both patients that are sensitive to natural light versus those that aren’t impacted by natural light. Skylights were installed above the Main Gallery to provide diffuse, controlled light that eases the deep distance of the gallery through the center of the building’s footprint. The building’s previous structure had very high ceilings. This led to the Main Gallery being designed to prioritize the access to natural light to improve patient experiences during visits and to provide clarity of circulation to the interior. It also prompted a challenge for smaller rooms that require acoustical privacy. A substructure was implemented to allow the ceiling and lighting to be suspended, minimizing the need to construct full-height walls to the full height of the structure.
The new Cancer Center is an inspiring, patientfirst facility that accommodates radiation oncology, an infusion treatment suite, a cancer administrative suite, and a future third-party infusion practice.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

RWJBarnabas Health
Melchiorre Cancer Center
Livingston, NJ
137,000 SF

As part of a strategic campus master plan initiated in 2018, FCA partnered with RWJBarnabas Health to design the Cooperman Cancer Center, a transformative healthcare facility located on the Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center campus in Livingston, New Jersey. The new 137,000-square-foot, five-story building replaces a former early education center and is strategically sited near the campus entrance to enhance accessibility and establish a distinct brand presence.
FCA served as Master Planner, Design Architect, and Architect of Record, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. The project reflects RWJBarnabas Health’s vision to reimagine cancer care through a patient-centered approach that supports individuals and families throughout their cancer journey—from screening and diagnosis to treatment and survivorship.
The center integrates advanced oncology services with holistic and supportive care. Key features include 52 exam rooms, 46 private infusion rooms, radiation oncology suites, imaging services (PET CT, MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, fluoroscopy), and lab and pre-surgical testing areas. Complementary services such as a wellness center, teaching kitchen, wig and prosthetic studio, and rooftop terrace foster healing and comfort.
Design highlights include a warm, monochromatic interior palette accented with muted jewel tones, a two-story edge-lit feature wall with routed Corian panels, and a ceiling-hung nature-inspired metal art installation. Custom decorative glass panels enhance patient check-in areas across all floors.
The Cooperman Cancer Center will stand as New Jersey’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, offering best-in-class care in a thoughtfully designed environment. FCA’s longstanding relationship with RWJBarnabas Health—spanning multiple campuses and nearly a billion dollars in construction—continues to shape the future of healthcare delivery across the region.
