A famous comedian was once asked if he was a prac cing Jew. “I don’t have to prac ce,” he replied, “I’m good at it.” This entertainer’s boast notwithstanding, the season of Lent reminds us that without prac ce, most of us aren’t good at our faith. Yes, salva on is a gi which cannot be earned. But all gi s must be nurtured and cul vated. I am not nearly as interested in what people give up for Lent as what they take up. Are there some spiritual prac ces which you could employ during this special season? Spending more me in guided medita on and longer periods with Scripture? Engaging in reading some though ul Chris an literature or listening to upli ing music? Watching a movie which inspires and challenges? Sharing Christ with someone who is open and seeking? Carrying out acts of service to others—especially those acts which others will never see? Making an extra, sacrificial financial gi while learning to make do on less? Forgiving someone who has not yet asked for it? My Lenten sermon series is en tled “The Absence of God.” Remember that some mes, the only thing which gets us through those dry mes is the extra nourishment we have stored up previously, through our spiritual prac ces. And speaking of the absence of God, I invite you to write me a note, sharing a dark me when you wondered where God was. Let’s grow together during this important holy season. Easter Sunday victories are always more meaningful when we have been honest about all of our Good Friday pain.
