Your Club provides cultural and traditional links with Italy and is one of the leading organisations in the large Italian community of Melbourne. Social and recreational occasions are important as they assist in improving community relations in our multicultural society.

The Italian community is recognised as one of Australia's most prominent and longest established ethnic communities. Importantly your community has built and preserved strong traditions in Australia and has made a valuable contribution to the social and cultural life of this country.

On the 20th Anniversary of the Veneto Social Club, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the Veneti that since 1973 have contributed to the creation and expansion of such a marvellous institution.

Since 1973 you have assisted migrants from the Veneto region to foster their culture and traditions, providing superb facilities for social, cultural, sporting and community purposes.

As one of the largest clubs within the Italian community, you have led the way for many other social clubs providing leadership and strength.

Your achievements of the last twenty years are too many to mention. I am certain however that you will continue to provide a valuable and incomparable service.

On behalf of the Victorian Government, I congratulate you on your 20th Anniversary and wish you every success for the future.

Can Soci e Amici, E' per me un grande onore avere ]'opportunity di contribuire a questa edizione speciale del ventesimo anniversario dell'apertura della Sede del Veneto Social Club.

Durante questi vent'anni il Club, grazie alla saggia amministrazione dei Comitati Direttivi che si sono susseguiti, ha fatto un notevole progresso sia finanziariamente che nelle varie attivita sportive e sociali.

Voglio ricordare soltanto alcuni degli avvenimenti sportivi pia salienti e tra questi ii Campionato Mondiale di Bocce del 1979 che ha lasciato un ricordo indelebile fra tutte le organizzazioni bocciofile partecipanti.

Vi sono stati diversi campionati nazionali di gare di bocce per le varie categoric maschili, femminili e giovanili. Ognuna di queste manifestazioni ha riscosso un rilevante successo.

Nel gioco del calcio il Club ha vinto i migliori titoli del Victoria. Al Club si praticano diverse discipline sportive e ognuna di esse ad un livello di competizione nazionale.

Encomiabile e stato it lavoro svolto con passione per il Club dai diversi gruppi di volontari con a capo le "Ladies Auxiliary".

11 nostro Club ha ospitato in varie occasioni personality politiche, religiose e del mondo dello spettacolo, sia australiane che italiane, sempre distinguendosi per l'eleganza e l'ospitalita.

Sono certo che l'avvenire di questo nostro amato Club e assicurato dalla presente avveduta amministrazione del comitato in carica e anche dai giovani che, seguendone l'esempio, sapranno in futuro continuare l'opera dei Toro padri con orgoglio e saggezza.

Nella mia posizione di "Manager" porgo al sodalizio veneto i miei pin sinceri auguri di infiniti successi.

It is a great honour for me to have the opportunity to contribute to this special publication commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the opening of the Veneto Social Club's premises.

During this time the Club, thanks to the wise administration of all the succeeding Executive Committees, made notable progress both financially and in the various social and sporting activities.

I would only like to bring to mind some of the most outstanding sporting events with amongst them the World Bocce Championship of 1979, which left a lasting memory for all the participating bocce teams. There have been many bocce national championships for the various male, female and junior categories. Each of these sporting events has brought forth outstanding success.

In soccer, the Club has won Victoria's most prestigious awards and titles. At the Club we compete in a diverse range of sports, each at the national level.

The work zealously executed for the Club by the various volunteer groups, with at the helm the Ladies Auxiliary, has been praiseworthy.

On various occasions our Club has welcomed political, religious and show business personalities, both Australian and Italian, always distinguishing itself for its elegance and hospitality.

I'm certain that the future of our beloved Club is secure in the hands of the current Executive Committee, with its wise administration, and in the hands of our youth who, following its example, will in the future be able to continue the work of their fathers with pride and wisdom.

As Manager of the Club, I give the association my sincerest good wishes for infinite success.

INTRODUZIONE DAL PRESIDENTE DEL CLUB

Venti anni di esistenza della nostra sede sociale rappresentano certamente un traguardo raggiunto di notevole importanza.

Non tanto per it tempo che inevitabilmente e trascorso dal giorno dell'inaugurazione ma soprattutto per it fatto che questa sede ha dato alla nostra associazione una linfa vitale che e capace di mantenerla sempre giovane e dinamica.

Il numero degli associati, le molteplici attivita e gli innumerevoli successi che ancora oggi si possono notare e che preludono a sempre maggiori sviluppi, confermano questo mio pensiero.

In un'atmosfera di vita sociale quale quella che si riscontra al momento, questo nostro anniversario non poteva passare inosservato e, oltre alle tradizionali celebrazioni, l'edizione di questa pubblicazione mi sembra pin che appropriata.

Con questo lavoro editoriale vogliamo evidenziare un punto della nostra storia, vogliamo marcare un traguardo raggiunto e vogliamo divulgare la conoscenza della nostra associazione a tutta la comunita che ci circonda e ci ammira; a coloro che ci sono vicini ed anche agli amici che abbiamo lasciato in Patria. Inoltre vogliamo lasciare un documento scritto che serva alle generazioni postume.

The existence, for twenty years, of premises, certainly represent the Club's our achievement of a goal of notable importance.

Not so much for the time that inevitably has passed from the day of the inauguration but, above all, for the fact that these premises have given our association a new lease on life, capable of maintaining it always young and dynamic.

The number of members, the manifold activities and the countless successes that we are still able to witness today and which are a prelude to always greater developments, are evidence to my thoughts.

In an atmosphere of social life such as that which we currently experience, this anniversary could not be allowed to pass by unnoticed and, beyond the traditional celebrations, I saw the publication of this special issue as more than befitting.

With this publication we would like to witness a point in our history, to mark the fulfilment of a goal and promote the knowledge of our association in the larger community which surrounds and admires us; to those near as well as to those friends we left behind, in our homeland.

Furthermore, we would like to leave a written document that will be useful to future generations.

PREFAZIONE Gia in occasione del decimo anniversario dell'apertura della sede, it sottoscritto fece le dovute ricerche e pubblicO it racconto relativo alla storia della costituzione del Veneto Social Club di Melbourne.

Oggi, ripresentandosi lo stesso compito, ma in occasione del ventennale, it sottoscritto, per ovviare ad una inutile ripetizione delle stesse cose, si limita a rivedere it racconto stesso, aggiungendovi una breve relazione relativa agli ultimi avvenimenti. 11 lavoro maggiore, questa volta, it sottoscritto lo rivolge verso la storia dei vari sotto-comitati, che, costituitisi in seno al club stesso, sono la rappresentanza delle attivita che si svolgono nel club.

Alcuni hanno presentato direttamente it loro scritto ed altri invece si sono affidati allo scrivente per la stesura della loro storia.

In conclusione, questo lavoro si a risolto in una interessante raccolta di fatti e impressioni che, pur raggiungendo lo scopo di narrare la storia di questo sodalizio veneto, fa trapelare fatti ed aspetti umani dell'immigrazione e dell'inserimento della componente veneta nella society australiana.

Already, for the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the opening of the premises, I, the undersigned, completed the necessary research and published the history which told the story of the making of the Veneto Social Club in Melbourne. Today, faced with the same task but with the occasion of the twentieth anniversary, I limit myself to reviewing the existing history, so as to avoid unnecessary repetition, adding to it a short report relating the latest developments. The main work, this time, is focused on the history of the various sub-committees which were formed within the Club itself and are the representation of the activities which occur at the Club. Some presented their own written history, others preferred to leave the drawing up of their story to the undersigned.

To conclude, this undertaking has worked out as an interesting collection of facts and impressions which, as well as achieving the aim of narrating the history of this Veneto organization, has also revealed facts and human aspects of the immigration and the insertion of the Veneto people in an Australian society.

STORIA

DALL'IDEA Al GIORNI D'OGGI Ricerche e racconto di Daniele Bertozzi

Lungo le rive del fiume Yarra, in una distesa di verde, quasi selvaggia, si erge imponente una costruzione di cemento armato. Dal disegno moderno, un po' avveniristico, spicca solitaria, in contrasto con la natura circostante. Sul fronte, rivolta verso la strada, una grandiosa vetrata termina con in alto incisa nella cornice di cemento la prestigiosa sigla "V.S.C.". Una gondola veneziana galleggia sola in una piccola vasca quale cimelio di una civilta pin antica e lontana.

Questo e quanto appariva agli occhi del visitatore che si avvicinava all'entrata della residenza del club dei veneti di Melbourne oltre dieci anni fa. Oggi questa costruzione, pur mantenendo sempre it disegno architettonico originale, non ha pin quell'aspetto di costruzione solitaria immersa nella natura selvaggia. Intorno ad essa si sono sviluppati gli impianti sportivi, it parcheggio automobilistico a ingrandito, l'ingresso si a munito di un elegante arco e di imponenti cancelli in ferro lavorato e prima di vedere la solitaria gondola si impone al visitatore la vista del Leone di San Marco, emblema della Repubblica Veneziana e dono della regione Veneto ai suoi concittadini di Melbourne. Ma soprattutto c'e molta attivita in pin, di dieci anni fa. Il club e ora frequentato ogni giorno da una moltitudine di persone per la sua nuova attivita di gioco d'azzardo: le "Poker Machines".

Tuttavia, dentro questa costruzione imponente, che oggi si a amalgamata al paesaggio circostante, nonostante che si presenti piu raffinata ed elegante, palpita sempre quella vita piena di calore paesano, specialmente tra i soci che sono stati i fautori di tanta opera. Si racchiudono ancora in essa le pin antiche e le pin nobili tradizioni di un popolo che, proveniente da una vasta regione italiana, ha trapiantato a Melbourne, la sua vita, le sue speranze, it suo avvenire. Un popolo laborioso e generoso, con una tradizione millenaria che,

Along the banks of the Yarra in an almost wild vastness of green, juts out imposingly a construction of reinforced concrete. Its modern architectural design, somewhat futuristic, makes it stand out from the contrasting surrounding nature. At the front, facing the road, a stately glass window culminates with carved high above it, in the concrete cornice, the prestigious initials of the "V.S.C.".

A lonely Venetian gondola floats in a small pond as a relic of a past and ancient civilization.

This is what used to confront the eyes of the visitor who used to approach the entrance to the residence of Melbourne's Club for the Veneti, over ten years ago.

Today, this building, although still maintaining its original architectural design, no longer has that appearance of a solitary building, engulfed by the vastness of nature.

Around it have developed various sporting facilities, the car park has been extended, the entrance is furbished with an elegant arch with imposing gates of wrought iron and, before seeing the solitary gondola, the visitor is confronted with the sight of St Mark's Lion, emblem of the Venetian Republic and a gift from the Veneto region to its fellow citizens in Melbourne. But, above all, there's a much greater level of activity than ten years ago. The Club, nowadays, is frequented daily by a multitude of people wanting to play the new poker machines. Inside this imposing building, which today appears more elegant and refined, blending in in its surrounding environment, there nonetheless still throbs a life full of that folkloric warmth, especially amongst its members, who are the people behind such great achievement. Enclosed within its walls are still found the most ancient and most noble traditions of a people who, coming from a large Italian region, have transplanted in Melbourne their lives, their hopes and their futures. A hard working and generous people, with a VENETO SOCIAL CLUB - XX° - 09

Molto spesso le pin grandi opere umane nascono dalle cose pin semplici. I veneti hanno una tradizione che si sono portati in Australia quale parte del loro bagaglio culturale: la partita a bocce con gli amici dopo it lavoro. Quello sport semplice, senza ne lussi, ne pretese, che rievocava le abitudini paesane nelle giornate di festa, doveva essere proprio it fulcro che produceva la spinta a quell'organizzazione che oggi a it Veneto Social Club.

The beginning of the Association But the beginning was not easy. The idea had to be conceived, the organization had to be created, and most of all, a common interest had to be found amongst them, who were spread across a vast metropolis, all with different interests.

Often the greatest human achievements are conceived from the most simple things.

Feste al Club A farsi un bicchier di vino, a scambiar due chiacchiere giocando una partita a bocce, si ritrovavano, dopo it lavoro, alcuni veneti di Melbourne. Fra loro c'erano Nino Bettiol, Aldo Saretta, Riccardo Crema, Angelo Silvestrini e Valerio Celotto.

Ma it luogo di raduno era squallido, d'altra parte non c'erano altri posti dove poter andare a giocare a bocce. Questo gioco, pressoche sconosciuto in Australia, non offriva nulla di meglio che un piccolo campo circondato da vecchie e rugginose lamiere che loro stessi si erano preparati.

Quella situazione misera e sconfortevole, li riempiva di tristezza ed in cuor loro vi era it desiderio di riemergere, anche socialmente, VENETO SOCIAL CLUB - XX' - 1C1

That simple sport, free from luxury or pretences, that brings to mind rural customs during days of festivity, had to be the focal point which induced the beginning of that organization known today as the Veneto Social Club.

There were in Melbourne some Veneti who would meet, after work, to have a glass of wine and a chat over a game of bocce.

Amongst them were Nino Bettiol, Aldo Saretta, Riccardo Crema, Angelo Silvestrini and Valerio Celotto.

The meeting place was squalid but, after all, there was nowhere else to go and play bocce.

This game, which was almost unknown in Australia, offered nothing more than a small field surrounded by old and rusty metal plates which they had constructed.

Secondo Bettiol nella sua abitazione di Ringwood e sotto la direzione di Duilio Barro si ebbe la prima riunione ufficiale del comitato provvisorio del Veneto Club. La seconda riunione segui a breve distanza in casa del sig. Bergamin dove, con I'adesione di altre cinque persone, fu stabilito definitivamente it comitato direttivo del Veneto Club a 13 membri. In quell'occasione fu eletto Nino Bettiol presidente provvisorio

This was the idea that set in motion the entire organization. It was in April, 1966.

A social group was formed by some Veneti, and within a short time it found the support and approval of an unexpected number of people from the same region.

From that moment the process was set in motion and, as we shall see, never to stop.

The first objective was to find a block of land where to build the future club. For that purpose a Provisional Committee was formed by the following people: Nino Bettiol, Lino Bettiol, Romeo Schiavon, Duilio Barro, VENETO SOCIAL CLUB - XX° - 11

presidente venne affidato a Rino Bergamin; la carica di tesoriere andel ad Aldo Saretta e Frank Marchesin si assunse it gravoso compito di segretario. Al vedersi concretizzare in cosi breve spazio di tempo ci6 che prima sembrava soltanto un'utopia, gli animi si riempirono d'entusiasmo, tanto che avrebbero voluto precedere i tempi. 11 presidente provvisorio infatti avanzava la proposta affinch6 ogni membro del comitato versasse $2000 quale anticipo di cassa per sopperire alle pia urgenti spese dell'associazione. La proposta fu per6 cautamente bocciata.

Ci6 nonostante Pattivita del comitato continuava freneticamente ed alla terza riunione, sempre in casa di Rino Bergamin, it presidente provvisorio Nino Bettiol rassegnava le dimissioni. Gli succedette Duilio Barro che vedremo per lungo tempo guidare con successo le sorti dell'associazione. 11 nuovo presidente proponeva alla carica di segretario sociale Rino Pozzebon per sostituire Valerio Celotto che si era dimesso anch'egli insieme a Claudio Dell'Oste. Ma questi rimestamenti nel direttivo non impedivano it progredire dei lavori che anzi, a breve distanza di tempo, gia nella quarta riunione indetta in casa di Mario Bonis, davano luogo al varo della prima attivita sociale.

11 primo degli innumerevoli successi dell'organizzazione veneta ebbe luogo it 27 maggio 1967 alla Capocabana Hall in una serata danzante dove l'entusiasmo sali alle stelle. I partecipanti si sfogarono in danze e cori paesani fino a tarda sera.

Ormai l'associazione era formata e da quel momento non fece altro che progredire.

II 10 agosto 1967, fu indetta la prima Assemblea Generale dei Soci dove fu adottata la prima costituzione sociale e fu eletto ufficialmente dalla maggioranza it primo comitato direttivo.

Questo fu composto come segue: Duilio Barro (presidente); Rino Bergamin (Vice-presidente); Franco Marchesin (segretario); Aldo Saretta (tesoriere); Rino Pozzebon (segretario sociale); e i seguenti consiglieri: Mario Bonis, Riccardo Crema, Nino Bettiol, Claudio Dall'Oste, Angelo Silvestrini, Oreste Barro, Lino Bettiol e Romeo Schiavon.

Cappellano del Veneto Club venne nominato Padre Giuliano Cavarzan.

Ormai it gruppo era saldo e numeroso e le feste si susseguirono con sempre maggiore frequenza e ben riuscite.

It was necessary to move quickly, hence the date for the first meeting was set. This first group of pioneers was hosted by Mr Secondo Bettiol at his house in Ringwood and, under the direction of Duilio Barro, the first official meeting of the Provisional Committee of the Veneto Club took place.

The second meeting followed shortly after.

It was held in Mr Bergamin's house where, with the seconding of five other people, the Executive Committee of the Veneto Club, comprising of 13 members, was formally established. During that meeting Nino Bettiol was elected as Provisional President.

The position of Vice-president was given to Rino Bergamin; the responsibility of Treasurer went to Aldo Saretta and Frank Markesin took on the arduous task of Secretary.

Witnessing the realization, in such a short span of time, of something that previously seemed Only a dream, filled everyone with great enthusiasm; so much so that they would have liked to have jumped ahead of time. In fact, the Provisional President put forth the proposal that each member of the committee pay $2000 in a deposit fund to provide for the association's most urgent expenses. This proposal, however, was cautiously rejected.

Nevertheless, the activities of the committee continued frenetically and at the third meeting, still in Rino Bergamin's house, the Provisional President, Nino Bettiol, handed in his resignation. He was succeeded

by Duilio Barro whom we shall see successfully guide, for a long period of time, the developments of the association. The new President proposed that the position of Social Secretary be assigned to Rino Pozzebon, to replace Valerio Celotto, who also had resigned along with Claudio Dall'Oste. This reshuffling of management, however, did not affect the progress of activities. Instead, within a short period of time, at only the fourth meeting held at Mario Bonis's house, they were deciding a date for the launching of the first social activity.

The first of the innumerable successes of the Veneto organization took place on the 25-5-1967, at the Capocabana Hall. The function was a dinner dance and the enthusiasm it created was magnificent. The guests thoroughly indulged themselves in dancing and folk singing till a very late

By now the organization was fully established and from that moment on, it did nothing but progress.

The members' first General Assembly was held on the 10th of August, 1967, where the first constitution for this social organization was adopted and the first Executive Committee was officially elected by a majority vote. This committee was made up by the following people: Duilio Barro (President), Rino Bergamin (Vice-President), Franco Marchesin (Secretary), Aldo Saretta (Treasurer), Rino Pozzebon (Social Secretary), and with the following other members, Mario Bonis, Riccardo Crema, Nino Bettiol, Claudion Dall'Oste, Angelo Silvestrini, Oreste Barro, Lino Bettiol and Romeo Schiavon.

Father Giuliano Cavarzan was nominated Chaplain of the Veneto Club. By now the group was firmly established with a large number of members and the social functions followed each other, more and more frequently, with great success.

Australian and Italian authorities sympathized with this group of Veneti and did not turn down the various invitations.

Molte ricorrenze che it club festeggia ancora oggi, furono istituite in quei primi anni di associazione, come it picnic natalizio, it ballo mascherato e la castagnata.

Intanto le mogli dei soci, che fin dall'inizio avevano dato to loro solidarieta nel collaborare all'organizzazione di tutte le feste, si costituivano, nel febbraio 1968, in sotto-comitato femminile col nome di "Ladies Auxiliary".

The Veneto organization realized that it could not fail to participate and although its desired aim was to purchase land to build its premises, it speedily organized itself and participated successfully. Seven girls competed in the contest at the Charity Ball, held on the 15th of September, 1967. L'acquisto del terreno e la costruzione della sede.

L'acquisto del terreno, primo passo verso un solido sviluppo dell'associazione, non poteva ormai pit tardare. Infatti, il 30 maggio 1968, dopo un'assemblea generale dei soci, l'allora presidente Duilio Barro, firmava il contratto di acquisto di un appezzamento

collected by the seven girls enabled their chosen Miss Charity Queen to reach third place in Melbourne's Italian Community Contest. At this ball, held at the San Remo Ballroom, were present the Hon. Sir Billy Snedden, who was then the Immigration Minister; and Dr Sorani, director of the Italian Consulate General in Melbourne.

This success already clearly demonstrated the organizational skills of the Veneti and served as a prelude to future successes. Many functions that the Club still celebrates today were instituted during those first years of their association; for example, the Christmas Picnic, the Fancy Dress Ball and the Castagnata.

Meanwhile the members' wives, who from the start had firmly contributed to the organization of all the social functions, in February 1968, formed a Ladies Subcommittee under the name of the Ladies Auxiliary. This group of women proved itself to be the future backbone of all of the Club's social functions, to the point of becoming an integral and essential part of the organization.

II 30 maggio 1969 il club eleggeva il suo secondo direttivo riconfermando alla presidenza il sig. Duilio Barro the convocava, per il 28 novembre dello stesso anno, un'assemblea generale straordinaria dei soci, dove si approvava all'unanimita la decisione di procedere senza indugi alla costruzione della Sede.

In seguito a tale approvazione il Club doveva darsi una forma giuridica pit adatta alle sue funzioni e responsabilita civili.

The purchase of the land, first step towards a solid development of the association, could no longer be delayed.

Hence, on the 30th of May, 1968, following a General Assembly of the members, the then President, Duilio Barro, signed the Contract of Sale for the purchase of a 16 acre lot, in Bulleen, where the prestigious centre of the Club stands today.

On the 30th of May, 1969, the Club elected its second Executive Committee, reelecting Mr Duilio Barro to the presidency.

At this meeting Mr Barro called for an extraordinary General Assembly of members (held on the 28th of November of that same year) where unanimous approval was given to proceed, without further ado, with the construction of the Centre. As a result of the above, the Club had to assume a new legal status more suited to its civil function and responsibilities. Hence, a second General Assembly was called for the 25th of March, 1970, where the new constitution was approved; thus the Club became a Company according to Victorian State law, with the name of "Veneto Social Club". The Constitution was signed in the presence of a lawyer, Mr L.F. Sartori of Coburg, on the

Pertanto fu indetta una seconda assemblea generale per it 25 marzo 1970, dove si approvava la nuova costituzione e it sodalizio assumeva la forma di compagnia secondo le leggi del Victoria, con il nome di "Veneto Social Club". La costituzione sociale fu sottoscritta alla presenza dell'avvocato L.F.Sartori di Coburg it 21 luglio 1970. 1 sottoscriventi furono: Duilio Barro, Rino Pozzebon, Aldo Saretta, Floriano Marchesin, Mario Bonis, Rino Bergamin, Edo Bettiol, Tommaso Agnoletti, Nino Bettiol, Lino Bettiol, Angelo Silvestrin, Oreste Barro e Giovanni Scomparin.

11 periodo della costruzione della sede fu uno dei pin travagliati dell'associazione.

II progetto affidato all'architetto Emilio Smrekar fu laborioso. 11 comitato allora in carica discusse pin volte l'approvazione dei vari disegni proposti. Intanto si dovevano convincere le autorita locali per ottenere it permesso di costruzione nel terreno acquistato che era zona alluvionale.

Finalmente l'ente preposto, it "Town Plannig and Board of Works" dava la sua approvazione ed it secondo progetto dell'architetto Smrekar era quello definitivo che oggi ammiriamo realizzato. Ma tali pratiche burocratiche avevano gia assorbito 18 mesi di laboriosa attivita. Quindi fu deciso l'appalto dei lavori e, alla sorveglianza e al coordinamento di questi, fu costituito un sotto-comitato apposito, capeggiato dal Cay. Tommaso Agnoletti.

La ditta appaltatrice fu la Bettiol Constructions che it 27 luglio 1972 gettava le fondamenta per 1'imponente costruzione. 11 Veneto Social Club si riservO it diritto di sub-appaltare parte dei lavori, cosi che nell'ottobre dello stesso anno incarico la ditta Camillo Bros. di iniziare la struttura sopraelevata in cemento armato. Da quel momento la cooperazione dei soci fu grandiosa. Ognuno offri, secondo le proprie capacita e possibilita, tutto ebb che poteva.

Mano d'opera gratuita afflui numerosissima.

Diversi soci titolari di imprese edili offrirono materiali e macchinari senza risparmiarsi.

La cooperazione e la solidarieta dei veneti in quel periodo fu tale che non potra mai essere dimenticata. Quel grandioso progetto che a quel tempo raggiungeva la vertiginosa cifra di tre quarti di milione di dollari, si pote realizzare solo grazie alla cooperazione, alla laboriosita e al coraggio che i soci del Club, mai uniti come allora, dimostrarono di possedere.

The period during the centre's construction was one of the most troubled for the association. The project, assigned to the architect Erminio Smrekar, was a laborious one. The committee in charge discussed the approval of the various proposed plans many times and local authorities had to be convinced that the construction plans were acceptable, as it was a flood prone area.

Finally, the Town Planning and Board of Works gave its approval and Smrekar's second architectural project became the chosen plan which we today admiringly witness, however, all the bureaucratic wrangling had taken up 18 months of laborious activity. The contract of work was finalized and a sub-committee, headed by Tommaso Agnoletti, was established to supervise and coordinate its progression.

The construction company was Bettiol Constructions who, on the 27th of July, 1972, were laying down the foundations for the stately building. The Veneto Social Club reserved the right to sub-contract part of the work, so that in October of the same year it employed Camillo Bros. to begin the above-ground structure in reinforced concrete. From that point onwards the members' co-operation was great, with everyone offering their full support. The amount of free labour abounded and various members, who were building contractors, offered materials and machinery, without recourse. The co-operation and solidarity of the Veneti during this period was so great that it will never be forgotten. The majestic project, which at the time reached the startling sum of three quarters of a million dollars, could only have been realized thanks to the co-operation, the hardship and the courage portrayed by the members of the Club, who had never before been so united.

The founding members made financial contributions; other members invested sums of moneys as debentures and financial organizations like the Commonwealth Bank and Carlton United Breweries, confronted with such enthusiasm, did not hesitate to give loans, which were guaranteed by various members.

contributo finanziario, altri soci investirono somme di denaro come obbligazioni e gli enti finanziari, come la Commonwelth Bank e la C.U.B., di fronte a tale entusiasmo, non esitarono a dare it loro contributo, garantiti anche da diversi soci.

Anche le attivita sociali continuarono ed ebbero anch'esse it loro merito per l'apporto di fondi alla costruenda sede.

Tutto questo sforzo comune, diretto dall'allora validissimo presidente Duilio Barro, port° finalmente alla realizzazione dell'ambito sogno dei veneti di Melbourne.

L'8 dicembre 1973 si ebbe l'apertura ufficiale della Sede, alla presenza di un pubblico di circa tremila persone.

11 nastro tricolore fu tagliato dall'on.

B.Snedden, leader liberale nel Parlamento Federale Australiano, mentre it Vescovo ausiliario Mons. Prkins benediva la nuova casa dei veneti.

Alla cerimonia di apertura, a cui erano presenti tutte le maggiori autorita politiche australiane ed italiane, pronunciarono it discorso augurale, oltre all'on. Snedden, l'Ambasciatore d'Italia in Australia, Dott.

This united effort, directed by the extremely efficient President, Duilio Barro, finally brought about the realization of a dream common amongst all the Veneti in Melbourne. The official opening of the Club was held on the 8th of December, 1973, in front of a crowd of three thousand people.

A ribbon with the Italian colours was cut by the Hon. Sir Billy Snedden, the Italian Ambassador in Australia, Dr P. Canale, and the President of the Club, Duilio Barro.

A congratulatory telegram arrived from Italy's Prime Minister, a Vicentino, the Hon. Mariano Rumor.

From the inauguration to the 20th anniversary.

From here onwards, the Club became the object of admiration not only amongst the Italian community in Australia and the Australian community itself but, most significantly, also amongst Italian authorities in the mother country.

Its success did not stop in Melbourne but spread overseas, thanks to the clever diplomatic manoeuvres of the Veneti here.

The directors of the Club, proud of their Club's prestige, which they built up through a careful public relations policy and consolidated by the respectable image of their establishment, were able to form ever more strengthening ties with the Veneto region. Gli scambi e le visite fra il Veneto e it Victoria sono diventati sempre pin frequenti; sindaci delle provincie e dei comuni veneti, autorita religiose e parroci di paesi del veneto, artisti e personality dello spettacolo di tutta Italia, sono venuti a Melbourne sempre accolti dal Veneto Social Club.

Possiamo ricordare, senza voler far torto a tutti gli altri, alcuni nomi fra i pin noti, come la Gina Lollobrigida nel campo dello spettacolo, it Patriarca di Venezia, Cardinale Ce, nel campo religioso e i Solisti Veneti, nel campo della musica. Questi nomi illustrano da soli l'importanza delle visite e degli scambi che sono avvenuti tramite il Veneto Social Club.

Per quanto concerne it rapporto con le autorita politiche e le personality australiane, possiamo solo dire che non ci sia Primo Ministro o Premier che non sia stato ospite del Veneto Social Club.

Le attivita sociali del club sono aumentate progressivamente e il Club, per le sue attrezzature, per la sua funzionale organizzazione e per la specializzazione in ogni settore di attivita sportiva o sociale, si guadagnato giustamente la fama di Club d'elite. Soltanto nel settore bocciofilo, per fare un esempio, in occasione dei campionati mondiali che si sono svolti nel suo bocciodromo, ha meravigliato le VENETO SOCIAL CLUB - XX' - 18

during the years following the inauguration, were promoted through the Veneto Social Club in the name of the Veneto community in Melbourne.

Political figures of the greatest importance amongst whom the President of the Veneto region, the Hon. Carlo Bernini, came to Melbourne for the celebration of Australian national events, thanks to the strong influence gained by the Melbourne Veneto community.

The exchange visits between Veneto and Victoria have become increasingly more frequent. Mayors of the Veneto provinces and councils, religious authorities and parish priests from Veneto towns, Italian artists and show business personalities have come to Melbourne and have always been welcomed by the Veneto Social Club. We can recall, without showing disrespect to the rest, some of the more notable names, like Gina Lollobrigida, in the show business field, the religious figure, the Patriarch of Venice, Cardinal Ce and, in the field of music, the Solisti Veneti. These names illustrate, in their own right, the importance of the visits and exchanges that have occurred through the Veneto Social Club. As far as the relationship with Australian political figures and personalities is concerned, we only need say that there has not been a Prime Minister or Premier who has not been a guest of the Veneto Social Club.

The Club's social activities have progressively increased and the Club, because of its facilities, its organizational skills and its specialization in its various social and sporting activities, has justifiably gained the reputation of an elite Club. In the area of bocce, alone, to give an example, during the World Championships held in its bocce complex, the Club amazed all the teams of the participating nations, who described it as the best in the world.

Since its inauguration the premises have progressively improved, the sporting complexes have increased and have been furbished with many facilities. A grandstand and an open seating area have been added to the soccer field. Two more tennis courts were added to those already existing. There isn't an area which has not had some improvement made and, today, the Club is brimming with life and activity, with an extremely promising future.

Lately, following Victoria's new gambling laws of 1992, the Club has seen the addition of poker machines. This new activity has

Non c'e area che non abbia avuto delle migliorie e il club oggi si presenta pieno di vita e di attivita con un futuro di grandi prospettive.

Ultimamente, in seguito alla nuova legge sul gioco d'azzardo entrata in vigore in Victoria nel 1992, al Club sono arrivate le macchinette da "poker". Questa nuova attivita ha dato al Club un introito finanziario superiore ad ogni precedente ed ha portato al club una schiera di visitatori mai vista prima, ad eccezione dei momenti di quando importanti partite di calcio sono giocate in casa dei veneti.

Un angolo di Veneto con le sue provincie 6 stato ricreato a Bulleen in Victoria dai veneti qui immigrati e fa presupporre che rimarra ancora per lungo tempo a testimoniare il lavoro e la civilta delle genti venete per molte generazioni a venire.

A corner of the Veneto region, with its provinces, has been recreated in Bulleen, Victoria, by the Veneti who migrated here.

And one can presuppose that it will remain for a long time, as testimony of the work and culture of the Veneto people, for many generations to come.

DAL PRESIDENTE AGOSTINO MARTINI Quale bocciofilo appassionato e tifoso faccio parte di questa organizzazione fin dai suoi inizi. Infatti, come 6 noto alla maggioranza dei soci, it nostro sodalizio 6 nato proprio sui campi da gioco delle bocce e quindi la mia presenza non 6 altro che una conseguenza logica e naturale. 11 club oggi cresciuto rispetto ai tempi della fondazione e di strada ne ha fatta tanta in questi 26 anni.

L'anniversario che ci accingiamo a celebrare, cioe it ventesimo anno dall'inaugurazione della nostra sede, a il pin importante avvenimento della storia del nostro sodalizio.

Quale attuale presidente in carica sento mio dovere prendere parte in questa pubblicazione commemorativa per rivolgermi ai soci ed a tutti gli amici del Veneto Social Club per condividere con loro la gioia e la soddisfazione dei successi ottenuti e del brillante futuro che gia si prospetta alla nostra organizzazione.

Ho fatto parte del comitato direttivo del club, con diverse mansioni, fin dal 1971. Nel 1975 fui eletto vice-presidente. A questa carica fui rieletto ogni anno fino al 1990 quando fui eletto presidente. Con le mansioni presidenziali le mie responsabilita sono aumentate ma la mia dedizione al club 6 sempre stata completa e quindi anche come presidente dedico tutto me stesso per lo sviluppo della nostra associazione. Ho sempre avuto l'appoggio di tutti i soci ma soprattutto dei membri del comitato direttivo e grazie a questa fraterna cooperazione, che esiste fra la maggioranza dei soci della nostra organizzazione, it lavoro 6 piacevole e di estrema soddisfazione.

L'avvenimento pin saliente del periodo della mia presidenza a stato senz'altro l'introduzione al Club delle macchinette per il gioco d'azzardo. Per questa nuova attivita abbiamo dovuto intraprendere lavori di modifica allo stabile ed allargare l'autoparcheggio. Tutto si a risolto nel migliore dei modi e, come sempre, con la piena e fattiva collaborazione di tutti. Questa nuova attivita, che a risultata molto redditizia, sta dando al nostro club un aspetto pia vivo e pertanto, con il sostegno di tutti i membri del comitato direttivo, cercheremo di amministrare it nuovo corso nell'interesse di tutti i soci salvaguardando le nostre tradizioni e la nostra cultura che il club degnamente rappresenta.

As a passionate bocce player and supporter, I have been part of this organization since its inception. In fact, as is known to the majority of our members, our fellowship actually began on the bocce courts, thus making my presence no more than an obvious and logical consequence. Today, the Club has grown in respect to the time of its beginnings and has gone a long way in these last 26 years. The anniversary we are about to celebrate, that is, the 20th anniversary of the inauguration of our Club premises, is the most important event in the history of our association. As the current President, I see it my duty to contribute to this commemorative publication, in order to address members and friends of the Veneto Social Club, so as to share with them the happiness and satisfaction brought about by our many successes and to share in the brilliant future awaiting our organization.

I have been a member of the Club's Executive Committee, undertaking various duties, since 1971. In 1975, I was elected as Vice-president. I was re-elected to this position every year, until 1990, when I was elected as President. My responsibilities increased in my role as President, but my dedication to the Club has always been total and, therefore, even as President, I give my all for the betterment of our association. I have always had the support of all the members but, above all, of the members of the Executive Committee. And it is thanks to this brotherly co-operation, which exists amongst the majority of our members, that the work is pleasant and extremely satisfying.

The most striking event, in the period of my presidency, would undoubtedly have to be the introduction of poker machines. To cater for this new activity we had to undertake some alterations to the building and increase the size of the car park.

All was resolved in the best of ways and, as always, with everyone's full and active cooperation. This new activity, which has proven to be very profitable, is giving the Club a more lively appearance and thus, with the support of all the members of the Executive Committee, we will try to administer this new path in the interest of all members, safeguarding our traditions and our culture, which the Club deservedly represents.

Sono trascorsi vent'anni dalla storica inaugurazione della cede sociale dei veneti di Melbourne, ma per il Comitato femminile delle "Ladies Auxiliary" ne sono gia trascorsi ventisei da quando si riunirono ed organizzarono le prime attivita sociali. Esse fanno parte della struttura di base di tutta l'organizzazione perch esse nacquero assieme all'idea, prima ancora che il sodalizio si costituisse. Erano infatti le mogli laboriose dei soci stessi che fondarono questa grande organizzazione. Esse appoggiarono i loro mariti nei primi passi verso la costituzione del sodalizio e li sorressero negli anni pit difficili quando questi si assumevano responsabilita molto serie e gravose. Sono infatti ancora oggi le mogli dei soci che amministrano e guidano il Club verso un avvenire sempre pit brillante. Quando nel 1968 si organizzarono in comitato, dietro l'invito dell'allora presidente Duilio Barro, esse erano gia parte essenziale del club dei veneti di Melbourne.

Senza il loro appoggio iniziale, infatti, sarebbe stato molto difficile mettere in atto una tale organizzazione e guidarla al successo.

Twenty years have passed since the historic inauguration of the Club premises of Melbourne's Veneti but, for the women's committee of the Ladies Auxiliary, twentysix years have gone by since they started to meet and organize social functions. They are part of the basic structure of the whole organization because they were born together with the concept, even before the association was formed. They were, in fact, the hard working wives of the actual members who founded this great organization. They gave their husbands support in those first steps towards the establishment of the association and they stood by them in the hardest years, when they were taking on extremely serious and difficult responsibilities. Today, they are still the wives of members who administer and guide the Club towards an ever more brilliant future. When, in 1967, they formed a Committee on the advice of the then President, Duilio Barro, they already were an essential component of the Club of Melbourne's Veneti. As a matter of fact, without their initial support, it would have been extremely difficult to set up such an organization and guide it to a successful

organizzazione. 11 premio alla loro laboriosita e arrivato prestissimo. Gia nel 1968, pochi mesi dopo la costituzione del club, si aggiudicavano il primo posto nella competizione di Miss Italian Community organizzata da "Il Globo", guadagnando il titolo di Miss Italian Charity Queen. Lo stesso premio lo guadagnavano nel 1969 e nel 1970. La sede non c'era ancora, ma ci6 non impediva a queste laboriose signore di organizzare feste e cene per farsi onore nell'ambito della comunita italiana di Melbourne in un concorso, che, come ben sappiamo, era dedicato alla beneficenza. I fondi raccolti erano devolti per la maggioranza alla "Spastic Children Society" prima e poi al "Children Hospital", ma anche per il club, per la costruenda sede sociale, ce n'era sempre una buona parte.

Yesterday's sacrifices today are only memories and, fortunately, happy ones. The first President was the wife of the then first President of the Club. And, following her, came all the others, elected by the subcommittee, who worked with the same enthusiasm and self-denial in the interest of the Association.

Nowadays, they meet at the Club to reminisce days gone by, their first successes, the events which contributed to the greatness of this well-known and prestigious organization. The recognition for all their hard work came very quickly. Already in 1968, only months after the establishment of the Club, they won first prize in the Miss Italian Community Competition, organized by "11 Globo", gaining the title of Miss Italian Charity Queen. They won the same

novembre 1972 leggiamo: .Venerdi scorso, nella Sanremo Ballroom, successo del Dinner Dance del Veneto Social Club• e sotto questo titolo la consueta foto ricordo con la Sig.ra Ferrari che consegna al cay. Duilio Barro in un assegno il ricavato delle manifestazioni indette dal Comitato femminile. Nella stessa foto c'erano Karen Pircher e Nadia Rigoni che in quell'anno vinsero, per il Veneto Club, rispettivamente il titolo di Miss Italian Community e Miss Charity Queen. Questo non facile successo t prova della volonta che esisteva in quelle laboriose donne venete.

Non era quindi il palazzo della sede sociale che le agevolava nel loro lavoro, come put) essere oggi, ma era bensi una voglia di arrivare, di distinguersi, di conseguire il successo di un sogno che pochi anni prima sembrava impossibile.

Come il club acquistO il terreno dove oggi sorge la maestosa sede, le Ladies Auxiliary si fecero ancor pill coraggio e non diminuirono la loro intensa attivita. 11 terreno costituiva gia una sede, un indirizzo comune dove sentirsi a casa e le feste, i picnic ed i raduni si fecero sempre phi consueti. Negli album di fotografie che queste signore conservano gelosamente possiamo ammirare gli incontri dei soci in un terreno vasto, pieno di prati e di alberi ma senza costruzioni, dove tuttavia 1'aria festosa dei raduni sociali traspare dai sorrisi della gente e dalla gioia dei bambini che giocano. Poi a sorta la baracca, denominata nostalgicamente "Grotta Alpina". C'era finalmente un tetto, provvisorio, ma c'era. E questo era un fattore che induceva ancor pia al darsi da fare. E le "Ladies Auxiliary" non se lo fecero dire. Non essendo pia necessario radunarsi nelle case private di ciascuna di queste signore, le attivita sociali si concentrarono sempre pill verso questa sede provvisoria.

Intanto i lavori di costruzione procedevano celermente e finalmente 1'8 dicembre 1973 la sede sociale fu inaugurata.

11 sodalizio veneto aveva una casa degna di rappresentarlo e le Ladies Auxiliary facevano la parte delle padrone di casa.

A questo benemerito gruppo si aggiungevano parecchie signore che prestavano gratuitamente la loro opera per aiutare il club. Questo gruppo di signore, diretto sempre dal comitato "Ladies Auxiliary" fu denominato "Le Volontarie" e, con il loro lavoro offerto gratuitamente, esse hanno contribuito sostanzialmente alle finanze del Club.

Una sfilata di moda organizzata dalle signore ausiliarie. prize in 1969 and in 1970. The premises did not yet exist, but this did not prevent these hard working women from organizing parties and dinners in order to gain respect amongst the Italian community, in Melbourne, by taking part in a competition which, as is well known, is dedicated to charity. The majority of their fund-raising was directed firstly to the Spastic Children Society and, secondly, to the Children's Hospital; but there was, nonetheless, a good sum set aside for the Club, for the construction of the proposed building.

In the weekly newspaper, "Il Globo", of the 26th of November, 1972, we read: "Last Friday, at the San Remo Ballroom, we saw the success of the Veneto Social Club's Dinner Dance" and underneath this heading, the customary memory shot with Mrs Ferrari handing a cheque to the Cay. Duilio Barro, for the proceeds of the aforementioned activities of the women's Committee. In the same photo were Karen Pircher and Nadia Rigoni who in that same year respectively won the titles of Miss Italian Community and Miss Charity Queen, on behalf of the Veneto Social Club. This not so easily gained success is testimony to the determination of those hard working Veneto women. It certainly wasn't the premises of the Club which facilitated their labours, as it

could be today, but it certainly was the will to achieve, to stand out, to succeed in the realization of a dream which only a few years before seemed impossible.

As the Club purchased the site of today's majestic building, the Ladies Auxiliary gained further courage and did not weaken their frenetic activity. The land already constituted a place, a common address where one could feel at home, and the festivities, the picnics and gatherings became more and more frequent. In the photo album jealously guarded by these women, we can observe the members' gatherings in a vast block of land, full of fields and trees but with no constructions, where, nonetheless, the festive atmosphere of these social occasions transpires through the smiles of the people and the happiness of the children playing. Then the shed was built, nostalgically called, "Grotta Alpina".

There finally was a roof, a temporary one, but a roof all the same; a factor which spurned on the will to do even more. And the Ladies Auxiliary did not need to be told.

No longer needing to meet at the various homes of each of these women, all social activities began to be held more and more at these temporary premises.

Meanwhile, the construction work was proceeding quickly and, finally, on the 8th of December, 1973, our building was inaugurated. The Veneto Association had a home worthy to represent it and the Ladies Auxiliary took on the role of house owners.

Many more women began to join this well-deserving group and to give freely of their time to help the Club. This group of women, always directed by the Ladies Auxiliary Committee, was named "Le Volontarie" and, with their voluntary work, substantially contributed to the Club's finances.

From the inauguration day onwards, the festivities gained ever-growing importance and the Veneto Social Club, having become the pride of Melbourne's entire Italian community, became host to Italian and Australian political figures and international show business personalities.

The Ladies Auxiliary have always been able to deal with all these new and challenging commitments, creating for the Veneto Social Club an unmistakeable image of style and elegance.

IL CORO VENETO "Di qua e di la dal (mare) ci stava un'osteria " cosi si potrebbe parafrasare la nascita del "Coro Veneto" di Melbourne: un'osteria sulle sponde del Piave e una su quelle dello Yarra. 11 bar "Grotta Alpina" sorto sulla riva dello Yarra poteva rappresentare benissimo l'osteria di qua dal mare. Cori di schiette voci maschili, al finire delle giornate di festa e dei raduni conviviali, sono echeggiati anche nella valle dello Yarra, cosi come si poteva udire nelle valli alpine, nei bei tempi prima dell'emigrazione.

Oggi ii coro 6 cresciuto ed e diventato adulto. Le sue prestazioni sono di livello professionale e la sua fama si a sparsa un po' per tutta l'Australia. Ma le origini derivano da quella semplice baracca sorta nel terreno del Veneto Social Club, prima della costruzione della Sede. Sono origini semplici e spontanee dettate da una tradizione che stenta a svanire. Nonostante la frenetica vita moderna, le canzoni "Rock" preferite dai giovani, un coro di voci antiche sbocciava comunque fra i veneti, quando l'ambiente si ricreava.

Cosi l'allora direttore del Club, it Cay. Rolando Di Bari (oggi defunto), non lascio passare inosservato it fenomeno ed assieme al maestro di canto delle parrocchie Sig. Nino Morandin ed altri veneti costituirono, nel 1975, un comitato che organizz6 it "Coro Veneto" oggi esistente e famoso.

11 primo comitato, e merita ricordarlo poiche dimostra chiaramente l'etnia di origine, fu composto da Cecchin, Costa, Reffo, Crema, Toniolo e in rappresentanza del Club dal Cay. Tom Agnoletti (oggi defunto). Da allora questo coro di strada ne ha fatta. In tutti i sensi: cresciuto in numero ed in professionalita tecnica, si a esibito un po' dovunque in Australia. Ha rappresentato la comunita italiana in diverse occasioni di esibizioni culturali internazionali. Ha cantato all'Opera, al Myer Music Bowl, 6 stato presente in numerosissimi concerti per beneficienza fra i quali possiamo menzionare quelli per la Croce Rossa, per l'Istituto dei

"Di qua e di la dal (mare) ci stava un'osteria...", the words from this song could paraphrase the beginnings of Melbourne's Coro Veneto - a tavern on the banks of the Piave and one on the banks of the Yarra.

The Grotta Alpina bar, set up on the banks of the Yarra river, could easily have represented the tavern on this side of the sea. Choruses sung by pure male voices, at the end of days of celebration and convivial gatherings, have also echoed in the Yarra Valley, as they were once heard in the Alpine valleys, in the great days before migration.

Today the Coro has grown and become adult. Its performances are of a professional standard and its reputation has spread across Australia. But its origins derive from that simple shack, built in the grounds of the Veneto Social Club, before the construction of the current premises. They are simple and spontaneous origins dictated by a deeply rooted tradition. Despite a frenetic modern life and the rock music preferred by the young, a chorus with an ancient sound was heard, nonetheless, amongst the Veneti, when the atmosphere was right.

It is thus that, in 1975, the then Manager of the Club, the late Cay. Rolando Di Bari, took note of this phenomenon and together with the parish's singing instructor, Mr Nino Morandin, and other Veneti, formed a committee and established the Coro Veneto, still in action and famous to date.

The first committee, worth remembering as it clearly demonstrates its ethnic origins, was made up by Cecchin, Costa, Reffo, Crema, VENETO SOCIAL CLUB - XX' - 33

bambini sordi, per l'Associazione Cattolica, per la "Home for the Aged", e cosi di seguito per un lunghissimo elenco di successi.

Data la formazione tecnica e professionale oggi raggiunta, it "Coro Veneto" annovera fra i suoi componenti anche voci femminili ed elementi di origine diversa da quella veneta.

II suo attuale coordinatore, e siamo nell'anno 1993, ricorda: 'Una delle migliori rappresentazioni a stata in Tasmania, dove fra le varie esibizioni abbiamo cantato una Santa Messa del "Perosi" nella Cattedrale di Launceston. E` stata una meravigliosa cerimonia, celebrata dal Vescovo alla presenza di autorita.

Ecclesiastiche e Laiche. Uscendo dalla Cattedrale, ad attenderci c'era it Dott. Eric Da Rin, l'allora Ambasciatore Italiano a Canberra, che si a congratulato con ogni singolo componente del coro con una forte stretta di mano.> Questo a it "Coro Veneto", nato al Veneto Social Club e del quale nee parte integrale ed attiva tutt'oggi.

Esso rappresenta, con orgoglio, una delle tante sezioni che, unite assieme, costituiscono l'intero complesso del Veneto Social Club di Bulleen.

Toniolo and, as a representative of the Club, the late Cay. Tom Agnoletti. Since then, this chorus has made significant progress in all aspects. It has increased in number, improved professionally in technique and performed in many places across Australia.

It has represented the Italian community on various occasions at International cultural performances; it has sung at the Opera; at the Myer Music Bowl; it has been a part of a great number of charity concerts, amongst which we can mention those for the Red Cross, the Institute for Deaf Children, the Catholic Association, the Home for the Aged and as such, it boasts an extremely long list of successes.

Given the technical and professional standard it has reached today, the Coro Veneto now includes in its line up female voices and singers of origins other than those of the Veneto region.

Its current Coordinator, and we are referring to 1993, recalls, "One of our best performances took place in Tasmania where, amongst the various performances, we sang the Holy Mass by Perosi, in the Launceston Cathedral. It was a wonderful ceremony, celebrated by the Bishop, with in attendance a number of Ecclesiastical and Laic authorities. This is the Coro Veneto, born at the Veneto Social Club and still an active and integral part of it. It represents, with pride, one of the many sections which, once united, constitute the entire body of the Veneto Social Club, in Bulleen.

BOCCE Siamo gia arrivati al ventesimo anno dall'apertura della sede di questo nostro magnifico club. Sembra che sia stato l'altro giorno!

Noi delle "Bocce" siamo stati i pionieri, ]'anima di questa magnifica sede.

Infatti, appena comprato it terreno, sono stati i bocciofili a costruire subito una baracca e quattro campi da gioco.

In quella baracca, denominata "Grotta Alpina" sono iniziate varie attivita e riunioni, tutte allo scopo di guadagnare i soldi necessari per costruire la sede sociale.

Noi bocciofili veneti eravamo gia forti nel nostro sport ma, nell'impossibilita di potersi allenare per la mancanza di attrezzature sportive, non potevamo dimostrare appieno le nostre possibilita. Con

l'avvento della sede sociale e quindi dei campi da gioco, le nostre capacita sportive si sono rivelate completamente e abbiamo vinto tutto ciO che era possibile vincere nello sport bocciofilo.

In quegl'anni, col propagarsi del gioco delle bocce, e ciO grazie anche al Veneto Social Club, si formava la "Australian Bocce Federation" che organizzava gare interclub e interstatali. Noi del Veneto Social Club abbiamo fatto la parte del leone vincendo la maggioranza dei titoli australiani. Fra i nostri campioni c'era

We have already reached the 20th year since the opening of our magnificent Club's building. Yet, it feels as if it were yesterday!

We, of the "Bocce", were the pioneers, the soul of these magnificent premises. In fact, as soon as the land was purchased, it was the bocce players who immediately built a shed and four bowling courts. In that shed, called "Grotta Alpina", began various activities and meetings, all for the purpose of raising the necessary money to build the Club's premises.

As bowlers, we Veneti were already good at our sport but given the inability to train, due to lack of adequate sporting facilities, could not fully realize our potential. With the building of our premises and thus the bowling courts, our sporting abilities were finally revealed and we won all that could possibly be won in the sport of Bocce.

During those years, with the increasing popularity of the sport, to a large extent thanks to the Veneto Social Club, the Australian Bocce Federation was formed taking on the task of organizing inter-club and interstate competitions. We, of the Veneto Social Club, took the lion's share by winning most of the Australian titles.

Amongst our champions, there was also Agostino Martini, the Veneto Social Club's current President. The Australian Bocce Federation selected an Australian side to VENETO SOCIAL CLUB - XX° - 35

L'Australian Bocce Federation organizzO la partecipazione di una squadra australiana alle gare per i campionati mondiali. I giocatori del nostro club hanno subito fatto parte della squadra nazionale.

Ovviamente ai primi esordi era difficile poter vincere a livello di campionati mondiali, ma la squadra australiana attirava spettatori pift della Francia e dell'Italia.

Guerrino Favrin e Luigi Chiumello avevano

participate in the World Championships.

Players from our Club were immediately selected as part of the national team.

Obviously, as it was our first appearance, it was difficult to win at World Championship standards, but the Australian team attracted more spectators than France and Italy.

Guerrino Favrin and Luigi Chiumello had a style that attracted the admiration of sports enthusiasts.

In 1979, the World Championships were held in Australia and hosted by the Veneto Social Club. Our organization of it was so excellent, it amazed the whole of the international Bocce community for its efficiency and for the spectacular presentation. Our sporting facilities came to be considered as the best in the world and the welcome by the host teams and spectators exceeded any expectations. Our Club left fond memories with all bowlers who participated in these championships and demonstrated what the Veneti in Melbourne have been able to achieve as migrants.

Perhaps because of the success of the previous occasion or perhaps only by process of rotation, in 1984, Australia received the

Competizione di bocce Ira it Marconi di Sydney e it Veneto S.C. di Melbourne. honour of once again holding the World Bocce Championships. This time, however, the competitions were held at various Bocce Clubs across Melbourne. The Veneto Social Club hosted the Precision Throwing and the Progressive Throwing events.

Again, in 1988, Melbourne was selected as the venue for the Junior Bocce Championships. Our bowling complex was used to host all the bocce competitions.

That event was also executed with great success. Alberto Granaglia, the famous

"tiro di precisione" e per it "tiro progressive".

Ancora nell'88 Melbourne veniva indicata come sede dei campionati di bocce Junior. 11 bocciodromo del nostro club ebbe ad ospitare tutte le gare di bocce. Anche in quell'occasione it successo fu notevole.

Oltre alle gare di livello mondiale it nostro club organizza incontri a livello statale ed interstatale. Scambiamo visite con i circoli bocciofili di Adelaide, Sydney, Griffith e Myrtleford. Queste continue visite ci procurano amicizie in tutta

l'Australia.

Tutta questa attivita e questi successi si debbono a quei soci che iniziando it nostro club hanno avuto it coraggio di intraprendere un'opera cosi grande. Grazie a loro possiamo praticare it nostro sport preferito fra amici e parlando it nostro dialetto come se fossimo ancora nel Veneto.

Ai campionati mondiali del 1993 che si stanno svolgendo in Italia a Saluzzo proprio quando si sta preparando questa pubblicazione commemorativa del ventennale della nostra sede, i rappresentanti della squadra australiana sono tutti veneti: S.Gatto, E.Colla, W.Brecevic e T.Biancacci.

Anche nei "Junior" ci sono stati dei rappresentanti di origine veneta. La nostra attuale posizione di prestigio nello sport bocciofilo la dobbiamo al nostro Veneto social Club. Un riconoscimento e quindi doveroso per tutti coloro che hanno contribuito alla formazione ed allo sviluppo di questo grande Club.

Premiazione ai Campionati Mondiali

Bocce champion, said of our Club, "It is the most beautiful bowling complex in the world."

As well as organizing World competitions, our Club organizes State and Interstate matches. We exchange visits with Bocce Clubs in Adelaide, Sydney, Griffith and Myrtleford. These on-going visits enable us to strike friendships across Australia.

All these activities and successes are due to those members who, in founding our Club, had the courage to take on such a major enterprise. Thanks to them, we are able to play our favourite sport amongst friends, speaking our dialect, just as if we were still in the Veneto region. In the 1993 World Championships, which are being held in Saluzzo, Italy, just as we are preparing this commemorative publication of the 20th Anniversary of our premises, the players representing Australia are all Veneti, namely, S.Gatto, E.Colla, W.Brecevic and T.Biancacci.

Even in the Junior Championships, there have been players with Veneto origins. Our current prestigious standing in the sport of Bocce is thanks to our Veneto Social Club.

An acknowledgement is therefore due to all those who have contributed to the formation and development of this great Club.

Alongside the Bocce Club of the Veneto Social Club operates the women's group who, as well as participating in the competitions reserved for women, also takes on the responsibility of organizing all receptions for all the competitions held on our courts.

It is these women who must receive the credit for the great successes of all Bocce meetings and events.

The Ladies Bocce Sub-Committee, as it is known, is an integral part of the Veneto Social Club.

AUSTRALIAN BOCCE FEDERATION In considerazione delle magnifiche attrezzature del Veneto Social Club e della popolarita che lo sport bocciofilo gode presso i soci di questo club, l'Australian Bocce Federation ha organizzato nel 1976, nel bocciodromo di questo club, il primo campionato Australiano, sponsorizzato dalla Benson and Hedges.

Successivamente nel 1979 l'Australian Bocce Federation ha organizzato, ancora una volta nel bocciodromo del Veneto Social Club, i campionati mondiali di bocce che hanno avuto luogo per la prima volta in Australia. Per questa occasione il Veneto Social Club ha esteso i campi di gioco per la misura richiesta internazionalmente ed ha costruito pure lo Sport Centre. Nel 1981 it Veneto Social Club e ancora una volta alla ribalta per i Campionati Nazionali Seniors e nel 1982 per it Primo Campionato Nazionale Giovanile. 11 Campionato Nazionale Giovanile si 6 ripetuto poi ancora al Veneto Social Club anche nel 1983 e nel 1988.

Nel 1985, sempre sotto it patrocinio dell'Australian Bocce Federation it Veneto Social Club ha ospitato parte dei Mondiali di Bocce Senior e nel 1992 it campionato Nazionale Seniors.

As a consequence of the Veneto Social Club's magnificent facilities and the popularity of the sport of bocce amongst its members, the Australian Bocce Federation, in 1976, organized the first Australian Championship sponsored by the Benson and Hedges Company, in the Club's bowling complex. Subsequently, in 1979, the Australian Bocce Federation organized, once again in the Veneto Social Club's bowling complex, the Bocce World Championships held for the first time in Australia.

Especially for this occasion, the Veneto Social Club extended the bowling courts to meet the required international standard and also built the Sport Centre. The sporting facilities and the organization of these games were so outstanding that they astonished the directors of the International Bocce Federation. The events were of the highest level and they culminated in a magnificent final between the Italian champions, Benevene and Granaglia and the French, Berthet and Cheviet.

In 1981, the Veneto Social Club was again in the limelight for the Senior National Championships and in 1982, for the first Junior National Championship.

The Junior National Championship was held once again, at the Veneto Social Club, in 1983 and in 1988.

In 1985, still under the auspices of the Australian Bocce Federation, the Veneto Social Club hosted part of the Seniors World Bocce Championship and in 1992, the National Seniors Championship.

CALCIO VENETO BULLEEN-VENETO SOCCER

In questi ultimi vent'anni, nel calcio, al Veneto Social Club si e vista una crescita colossale dai ranghi della Provisional League alla sua prima vincita del Premier League Championship, nel 1993. (La competizione di calcio pl.(' importante del Victoria).

Questa realizzazione ha trasformato il Bulleen-Veneto in una considerevole forza del calcio nello stato del Victoria.

Facciamo un breve riassunto della storia del Club di calcio. La prima squadra di calcio, il Bulleen Veneto, fu formata nel 1974 e gioc6 la sua prima partita al collegio Marcellin. II Bulleen Veneto si incontrO con il Galveston e il Bulleen vinse con un risultato di 5 a 1. La squadra giocava nella "District League". 11 Club aveva tre squadre: Senior, Reserves e gli Under 16's.

La squadra Seniors si classificei quarta e gioco nelle semi-finali della Coppa District League. 1 primi vincitori del "Best and Fairest" furono Benny Dal Ben e il capitano, John Rossetto. Negli anni '74 e '75, la squadra era formata dai membri del sottocomitato stesso che erano: Carlo Graser, Adriano Spadar, Robert Hero, J. Menegazzo, Dr Di Clario, T. Di Piero, L. Osellame, R. Boscato e V. Frezzini.

11 primo "vero comitato", come lo conosciamo oggi, fu formato nel 1976 ed era composto da: Abele Pillon, Peter D'Adam, Piero Simeoni (che poi diventO presidente dal 1985 al 1987 e dal 1989 al 1990), Angelo Bettiol e Orfeo Di Marzio.

II primo sotto-comitato ufficiale fu formato nel 1977, Peter D'Adam ebbe l'incarico di presidente, Tony Pegoraro, direttore sportivo e l'incarico di segretario ando ad Adriano Spadaro. Gli altri membri del comitato furono: Abele Pillon, Victor Mason, Beppe Agnoletto, Giuseppe Boarotto, Angelo Bettiol, Mr Conte, Orfeo Di Marzio, Mr Storcato e John Dell'Aquila.

In the last 20 years, soccer at the Veneto Social Club has seen a meteoric rise from the ranks of the Provisional League, culminating by winning its first ever Premier League Championship (the major soccer competition in Victoria), in 1993. This achievement has made the Bulleen-Veneto a prominent force, in soccer, in the State of Victoria.

Let us briefly recapitulate on the history of the Soccer Club.

The first Bulleen-Veneto soccer side to be formed was in 1974, with its first match being played at Marcellin College. BulleenVeneto against Galveston, in which Bulleen won 5 to 1. The team played in the District League. The Club had three teams, Senior, Reserves and Under 16's.

The Senior team finished fourth in the League and made the Semi-finals of the District League Cup. The first Best and Fairest winners were Benny Dal Ben and John Rossetto, the Captain. The players were the Committee in 1974 and 1975, which included: Carlo Graser, Adrian Spadaro, Robert Hero, J. Menegazzo, Dr Di Clario, T. Di Piero, L. Osellame, R. Boscato and V. Frezzini.

The very first "real" committee to be formed, as we know it today, was formed in 1976 and was headed by Abele Pillon, with Peter D'Adam, Piero Simeoni (who went on to be President in 1985 to 1987 and 1989 to

Nei Junior c'erano bravissimi giocatori che furono poi promossi al livello "senior" come, per esempio, Lawrence Boarotto, Ernie Boin, Tony Marsan (che ancora gioca nel 1993 dopo 14 anni al Club), Laurie Pillon, Moris Bisetto e Sandro Bastasin. Greg Pansino fu segretario nel 1979 per le sezioni Junior e Senior del Club.

Bebbe Boarotto diventO presidente nel 1980 e tenne questo incarico fino al 1984. In questo periodo it Club avanzO di ben quattro divisioni, dalla terza divisione nella Provisional League alla terza divisione nella "Metropolitan League".

La stagione del 1981 vide un sistema doppio di allenamento per i Senior, con a capo Mercello D'Amico e Carlo Graser.

Nella speranza di migliorare l'immagine del Club assunsero giocatori per rinforzare la squadra, fra i quali, la dinamica coppia: Sam e Pat Saladino.

Nel 1981 i Senior arrivarono quinti iq classifica. Nello stesso anno il Club riusci formare squadre per i juniors, delle seguenti eta: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 e 16 anni.

11 1982 fu un anno di successo perche i senior arrivarono secondi in classifica nella terza divisione della Provisional League, cosa che diede Toro la promozione alla prima divisione della Provisional League.

Nella Prima Divisione la squadra fu allenata da Tony Vrzina, la cui stima migliorO 1'immagine del Club nello stato del Victoria.

Nel 1982 il Veneto Social Club ospit6 le partite di Coppa Italia. L'organizzazione

The Chairperson was Peter D'Adam, Tony Pegoraro (Sports Manager), Adrian Spadaro (Secretary), and with the other members being, Abele Pillon, Victor Mason, Beppe Agnoletto, Giuseppe Boarotto, Angelo Bettiol, Mr Conte, Orfeo Di Marzio, Mr Storcato and John Dell'Aquila.

In 1977, the Seniors were promoted to the 3rd Division of the Provisional League; the beginning of a very successful future for the Club.

(who is still playing in 1993, after 14 years at the Club), Laurie Pillon, Morris Bisetto and Sandro Bastasin, just to name a few.

Greg Pansino was Secretary for both sections of the Club, Seniors and Juniors, in 1979.

In 1980, Beppe Boarotto was Chairperson and he held this position until 1984. During this period the Club moved up by four Divisions, from 3rd Division in the Provisional League to 3rd Division in the Metropolitan League.

The 1981 season saw a dual coaching arrangement for the Seniors, headed by Marcello D'Amico and Carlo Graser. In an attempt to lift the profile of the Club, they astutely recruited players to bolster the side which included the dynamic duo of Sam and Pat Saladino.

In 1981, the Seniors finished fifth. In that same year, the Club fielded Juniors for VENETO SOCIAL CLUB - XX° - 41

delle gare ebbe un successo che ancora oggi non 6 stato eguagliato. La nostra squadra "Bulleen Veneto" si qualifico per la finalissima ma perse per 3 a 2 contro it Fawkner.

Alla fine della stagione 1983 il Club fece domanda per essere ammesso ad una "League" pin alta e fu promosso alla Terza Divisione della Metropolitan League. Bebbe Boarotto era il presidente e lo fu anche per il 1984.

Nel 1985, dopo essersi classificato secondo nella terza divisione della Metropolitan League, il Club fu avanzato alla seconda Divisione.

Gli anni tra it 1985 e il 1987 furono tempi memorabili per il Club. Con a capo it presidente Peter Simeoni e l'allenatore Alan Gentry, la squadra si mosse dalla Metropolitan League ed entr6 nella State League o Premier League come 6 chiamata oggi.

1985 = Finalisti - 3 Divisione Metropolitan League; 1986 = Finalisti - 2 Divisione Metropolitan League; 1987 = Campioni - 1 Divisione Metropolitan League.

Nel 1986 il Club vinse anche la Coppa Italia che fu giocata al Veneto Social Club.

La squadra vinse 5 a 0 nella finalissima contro it Nunawading City. Nel 1986 le Riserve, alienate da Sam Saladino, vinsero la Coppa Harry Armstrong.

Nel 1988, primo anno nella State League, (il livello pia alto di competizione nello stato del Victoria), il Club fu allenato da Jimmy Rooney, un ex giocatore dell'Australian International che giocO per ]'Australia in 100 partite. 11 presidente in questo stesso anno fu Beppe Boarotto. La squadra si classific6 nona e le riserve, alienate da Sam Saladino, si classificarono al terzo posto.

Nel 1989 e nel 1990, Peter Simeoni riprese I'incarico di presidente e la squadra si classif icO, rispettivamente, decima e ottava nella League. La squadra fu allenata da Tony Vrzina nel 1989 e da Alan Gentry nel 1990.

Un altro periodo memorabile per il Club fu dal 1991 al 1993. Con a capo it presidente Adrian Benetti e l'allenatore Andy.

Bozikas, il Club realizzo i seguenti risultati: 1991 = Arrivati primi nella classifica insieme alla Brunswick United Juventus, si perse VENETO SOCIAL CLUB - XX' - 42

the 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 age groups.

1982 was a successful year in which the Seniors finished second in the Provisional League - Division 3, thus gaining an automatic promotion to Division 1 of the same League. In Division 1 of the Provisional League, the team was coached by Tony Vrzina whose high profile lifted the image of the Club, in the State of Victoria.

1982 also saw the Veneto Social Club host the Coppa Italia Series which, until now, has been the most successful series ever staged. The Bulleen Soccer Club reached the Final of the Italian Cup, but lost to Fawkner 3 to 2.

At the end of the 1983 season, the Club put in a submission for admission to a higher league and were successful in their application, by being granted a "promotion" to the 3rd Division of the Metropolitan League. Beppe Boarotto, as previously mentioned, was Chairperson in 1983 and continued as such, in 1984.

In 1985, after finishing second in the 3rd Division of the Metropolitan League, the Club was promoted to the 2nd Division of the same. The years 1985 to 1987 were a golden era for the Club. Headed by Peter Simeoni as Chairperson and Alan Gentry as Coach, the team rose from the ranks of the Metropolitan League to the State League, (Premier League, as it is known today).

1985 - Runners Up, Division 3, Metropolitan League.

1986 - Runners Up, Division 2, Metropolitan League.

1987 - Champions, Division 1, Metropolitan League.

In 1986, the Club also won the Coppa Italia Series which was staged at the Veneto Social Club. The team won 5 to 0, defeating Nunawading City, in the Final. In 1986, the Reserves, coached by Sam Saladino, won the Harry Armstrong Cup. In 1988, the first year in the State League (the highest level of competition in Victorian soccer), the Club was coached by Jimmy Rooney, a former Australian International who represented Australia 100 times. The Chairperson, in this same year, was Beppe Boarotto. The team finished ninth on the ladder and the Reserves, coached by Sam Saladino, finished third.

In 1989 and in 1990, Peter Simeoni returned as Chairperson, and the team finished tenth and eighth, respectively, in the League. The team was coached by Tony Vrzina in 1989 and Alan Gentry in 1990.

II giocatore che si distinse piti di tutti fu Fabio Incantalupo che, non solo vinse it "Best & Fairest" del Club, ma fu anche votato it miglior giocatore della stagione 1991. Vinse la medaglia "Bill Fleming" (premio della Mass Media) e la prestigiosa Medaglia D'Oro. La squadra del Bulleen Veneto del 1991 dimostrO che il Club possedeva una forza nel calcio da doversi considerare negli anni venturi, e ci6 lo conferm6 definitivamente nel 1993 con la vincita del campionato.

Another golden patch, for the Club, was had in the years from 1991 to 1993. Headed by Adrian Benetti as Chairperson and Andy Bozikas as Coach, the Club achieved the following results: 1991 - Equal First with Brunswick United Juventus, but "lost" the championship on goal difference; 1992 - Second in the Premier League Championship; Third in the Top 5 Series (this was used to decide the Championship side); 1993 - First in the Premier League - Minor Premiers; First in the Top 5 Series - Champions.

The statistics for the successful year of 1991 were: 15 wins, 8 draws and 3 losses. The team scored 54 goals, the League's highest, out of all the clubs.

The leading light amongst the players, in 1991, was Fabio Incantalupo, who not only won the Club's Best and Fairest, but was voted the "Best Player of the 1991 Season".

He won the Bill Fleming Medal (a Media Award) and the prestigious Gold Medal.

The 1991 Bulleen-Veneto side showed that the Club would be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years and this came to fruition, in 1993, when the Club won the Championship. Led astutely by the quietly spoken Andy Bozikas, the Club silenced all critics by emphatically beating Fawkner, 2 to 0, in the Grand Final. Goal scorers for this historic occasion were Scott Patterson and Frank Valentic. The team for the Grand Final was as follows: Olver, Valentic, Vesnaver, Marsan, Sonsini, Krajacic, Branov, (Giaccherini), Grbac, Zinni, Tsiakos, Patterson.

The Juniors had a most successful year in 1993. The Under 16's won the Championship and the League Cup. The team has been undefeated for three years and it is the Club's most successful Junior side of the past 20 years. The Under 16's was coached by Egan Schille (who coached the team when they were the Under 14's and the Under 15's).

The Under 14's, coached by Joe Catalano, also won the Championship and the League Cup. The Soccer Club is an integral and important part of the Veneto Social Club.

TENNIS Mentre si celebra il ventesimo anniversario del Veneto Social Club, il Tennis puo vantarsi di 17 anni di successo, durante i quali i vari comitati hanno fatto del loro meglio per assicurare un migliore livello di gioco e, allo stesso tempo, di creare un'atmosfera sociale dove i soci possano godere il loro gioco da amici.

I primi dieci anni di vita del club di tennis furono molto attivi.

Nel luglio 1976 furono costruiti quattro campi da tennis. Nel primo anno si iscrissero 300 soci. II tennis era giocato maggiormente a livello sociale con qualche incontro ogni tanto contro altri club. La maggior parte dei giocatori erano abbastanza nuovi al gioco, ma con l'aiuto del nostro primo allenatore, Rino Mazzocato, lentamente il tennis migliorO. Divenne ovvio, con l'arrivo del "boom" del tennis, e con sempre tanti giocatori in attesa di una partita, che ci volessero altri campi da tennis, non solo per accomodare il gioco sociale, ma anche per permettere ai giocatori di poter partecipare a delle competizioni con altri club locali. Nel 1983, altri due campi da tennis furono costruiti, portando il totale a sei. Nel 1987, furono dotati di luci tutti i campi.

Nei primi tempi i "Round Robins" erano cosi richiesti che si giocavano su una media di una volta al mese. Dal 1981 fino al 1987, si teneva una competizione annuale contro il Marconi Club di Sydney ogni week-end dell'Australia Day. Questo era uno degli avvenimenti piii graditi dell'anno. While we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Veneto Social Club, Tennis can boast 17 years of success, during which the various committees have done their utmost to ensure an improving level of tennis and at the same time create a social atmosphere whereby the members can enjoy their game amongst friends.

The first ten years of the tennis club saw a great deal of activity with the construction of four tennis courts, in July, 1976.

In the first year, 300 members enrolled and the level of tennis was mainly social with the odd challenge to other clubs. The majority of players were fairly "green" to the game, but with the help of our first coach, Rino Mazzocato, it slowly gained in popularity.

It became obvious when the "tennis boom" came and there were always players waiting for a game that more courts were required, not only to accommodate social play, but also to allow players to enter into competitive play against other local clubs.

In 1983, an additional two courts were constructed bringing the total to six. In 1987, all six courts had lighting installed.

In the early days Round Robins were so popular that they were held on an average

guidance of Russell is important to the future of our Club, so that the efforts of our founders will not be in vain.

These last ten years have mostly been a period of consolidation. Various improvements have been made to the tennis courts and adjoining buildings.

The increase in the number of competitive teams is not restricted to the juniors. Within the current 450 members, there are twelve male, five female and two mixed competitive teams. The Club is organized to cater for all-comers, regardless of standard, and there are various inter-club championships as well as social play.

To all the members and committees who have dedicated their time and efforts to create, run and improve the tennis club, many thanks.

Sergio Zotti, the current President, is an "A Grade" shooter and has won numerous trophies. He is also the winner of a silver medal in the Brisbane National Championships. Another shooter worthy of mention is Benny Scotta, expresident and National champion of the Single Barrel Point Score Championship.

Frank Spinosa was a member of the team representing Australia, in Singapore, where the South East Asia Championships were held. Australia won the Individual events and finished in first place in the Teams Point Score. I remember Joe Scarpa also being a winner of the Brisbane National Championships.

The Veneto Social Club Shooters has also gained major victories in the South Eastern Zone Interclub Competitions. There are interstate competitions and exchange visits with the Marconi Club, in Sydney.

There is so much more to say about the past, but I would like to shift my attention to the new generation, to those young people who have chosen this sport as a hobby and are serious competitors. We must make mention of Mr Peter Signorotto (Member of the Australian Police Force) who, with his two sons, is always present in our competitions.

There are the two brothers, Mario and Steve Incani who, alongside their cousin Alex Incani, are excellent young markspersons.

Rolando Zanca, with his father, two old members of our Club, are good supporters and have gained many victories.

All of these young people could emerge as future champions. Amongst all of them there is talent, capability and the possibility of making headways in a fruitful career, as there is in the very young Daniel Di Pietro, Daniel Signorotto and Vince Mollica Jnr who already compete at the National level.

There is also a women's group made up by Gabriella Chiocchetti, Maria Montanaro, Lidia Dal Santo and Lina laria; all culinary experts who, during breaks between shooting, prepare a delicious plate of pasta, in typical Italian style, which is particularly appreciated by all members of the group.

SQUASH 11 Veneto Squash Club 6 lieto di essere stato una parte integrale nella vita del Veneto Social Club, in questi ultimi vent'anni.

Lo Squash Club venne formato nel 1974 quando un gruppo di appassionati, Anthony Gallichio, Elfio Stella, Ron Barbano, John McArdle, Maurie Rech, John Dal Santo e Danny D'Odorico, pensarono che lo squash poteva essere un mezzo per aumentare l'interesse verso il Veneto Social Club, fornendo Popportunita ai suoi soci di giocare contro molti clubs di Melbourne gia ben stabiliti.

Nei primi anni, il club partecipo alle competizioni della North Eastern Division della "Squash Racquets Association" del Victoria. 11 club raggiunse dei notevoli successi e riusci a formare otto squadre con 45 giocatori registrati.

The Squash Club was formed in 1974, when a group of enthusiasts, namely Anthony Gallichio, Elfio Stella, Ron Barbano, John Mc Ardle, Maurie Rech, John Dal Santo and Danny D'Odorico, saw Squash as a means to further the status of the Club, by providing the opportunity for its members to compete against the many well established Clubs, throughout Melbourne.

The aims of the Club, as set down by the first Committee, were as follows: 1. Foster interest in Squash amongst Veneto Social Club members; 2. Raise the standard of the game by competing at all levels with other Social Clubs in the area; 3. Through social contact, advance the standing and prestige of the Veneto Social Club in the community.

The Squash Club has continued to pursue these aims and the high esteem with which the Club is held, within the Squash community, is a credit to the foresight of the Club's founders and the Veneto Social Club itself.

It is pleasing to note that two of these first members, John Dal Santo and Ron Barbano, continue to compete and are still among the Club's leading players.

Il Club correntemente ha cinque squadre di "Pennant" con ventotto giocatori registrati. 11 Club, quest'anno, ha avuto la fortuna di avere due bravissimi giocatori: Maurice Forte e suo figlio Marc the giocavano precedentemente nello "State Grades".

Lo Squash Club si congratula col Veneto Social Club per i suoi primi vent'anni di operazione pieni di successo e gli augura un futuro di continui successi.

ANZIANI Molti anziani di origine italiana di Melbourne si sono riuniti in circoli ricreativi.

In questi circoli possono parlare la loro lingua e socializzare secondo le loro tradizioni. In molti casi si riuniscono in sale messe loro a disposizione dai vari municipi dove risiedono ma quando e possibile si riuniscono nei vari club italiani dove trovano un ambiente a loro pin confacente e familiare. Questo a it caso del Circolo Anziani di Bulleen e Dintorni che a ospitato dal Veneto Social Club. Molti degli appartenenti a questo circolo sono di origine veneta ed anche soci del Veneto Social Club.

11 club offre loro le magnifiche ed eleganti risorse di cui Bode e un'ospitalita di carattere veneto. Dalla segretaria di questo circolo riceviamo la relazione che segue riguardante la storia della fondazione.

11 nostro circolo di oggi, nel 1977 era un piccolo gruppo di anziani radunati in quell'epoca dal capo della Chiesa di San Clemente di Bulleen, Padre Egan. II suddetto Padre ci incoraggiava a radunare queste persone ora in una casa ora in un'altra dove ci davano ospitalita per qualche ora di diversivo.

Questi anziani aderivano sempre pin ai nostri inviti. Come passavano i mesi tl gruppo aumentava di numero fino che raggiunse la consistenza di una cinquantina di persone. 11 Sig. Carlo Frigo che era con noi ebbe l'idea di chiedere al Comitato del Veneto Social Club se ci avesse accolto nel Club. Cosi nell'anno 1978 ci diede it consenso dato che fra noi c'erano diversi fondatori del Veneto Social Club. Oggi queste brave persone sono quasi tutte scomparse ma il loro ricordo rimane ancora con noi. Mi ricordo che il Sig. Agnoletti, presidente in quel tempo del Veneto Social Club, ebbe parole d'incoraggiamento per noi.

11 Pranzo del giovedi Many elderly people of Italian origin, in Melbourne, meet in recreational groups. In these circles they can speak their own language and socialize according to their own traditions. In most cases, they meet in rooms made available for them by the various Councils within their municipality but, when possible, they meet in the various Italian Clubs where they find a more suited and familiar environment. This is the case for the Circolo Anziani di Bulleen e i Dintorni, which is based at the Veneto Social Club. Many members of this group are originally from the Veneto region and are also members of the Veneto Social Club.

The Club makes available to them its magnificent and elegant resources and hospitality, with a Veneto character.

Following is the report received from the Secretary of this Association, outlining the history of its beginnings.

organize these meetings, at various people's places, where we were made welcome for a few hours of recreation.

These elderly people began to depend mere and more on our invitations. As the months passed, the group progressively grew to the point where we had a good fifty people. Mr Carlo Frigo, who was one of our group, came up with the idea of asking the Veneto Social Club's Executive Committee if it would allow us to use the Club's premises.

Hence, in 1978, the Committee gave us the go-ahead, since amongst our group there were founding members of the Veneto Social Club. Nowadays, these good people have almost all left us, but their memory still remains with us. I remember Mr Agnoletti, who at the time was President of the Veneto Social Club, giving us words of encouragement. Today our group has 440 members. We have our own bocce players who always hold their own in competitions; we have our monthly luncheon in the Sala Venezia of the Veneto Social Club; every Thursday we meet at the Club where there are always some activities for all: games of bocce, card games, bingo and poker machines.

When Mr Carlo Frigo resigned as President of the elderly group, he was succeeded by Mr Campagna who, from 1986 up to the present time, has carried out that duty.

Our Association is grateful to the Veneto Social Club and we extend a thank you to the current President, Mr Agostino Martini, and the Manager, Mr Biancotto, in particular, for being so patient with us.

ASSOCIAZIONE

PADOVANI NEL MONDO L'Associazione Padovani nel Mondo era gia stata formata attorno al 1970. Poi, per cause a not sconosciute, era stata abbandonata.

Nel febbraio del 1986 it fu Cay. Costante Testa con un'inserzione su "II Globo" invitava i padovani di Melbourne a riunirsi per vedere se fosse possibile rifondare la vecchia associazione. Con la prima riunione al Veneto Social Club, in risposta a quell'inserzione, si era riusciti a radunare soltanto sette padovani.

I convenuti non si persero d'animo e ripeterono la stessa inserzione tre settimane dopo. Quindi, ad intervalli di tre settimane continuarono a ripetere quell'inserzione fintanto che non raggiunsero it numero di circa quaranta persone.

Con tale consistenza fu possibile formare it primo comitato alla cui presidenza fu eletto Walter Reffo. Alla carica di vice presidente fu eletto Costante Testa. Segretario e tesoriere furono rispettivamente Tito Galiazzo e Antonietta Barolo.

Col passare degli anni l'associazione progressivamente aumentata fino a raggiungere 1'attuale numero di iscritti di circa 150 famiglie.

E' ancora una piccola Associazione ma bene organizzata, compatta e dinamica.

The Associazione Padovani nel Mondo had already been formed around 1970 but, for reasons unbeknown to us, had been abandoned.

In February, 1986, the late Cay. Costante Testa placed a notice in "11 Globo", inviting all Melbourne Padovani to meet, to see if it were possible to reform the old association.

With the first meeting, at the Veneto Social Club, in answer to this notice we were able to recruit only seven Padovani. Those present didn't lose heart and re-advertised the same notice three weeks later. Hence, they continued placing this same notice, at three weekly intervals, until they recruited approximately forty people.

With this number, it was possible to form the first Committee to which Walter Reffo was elected President. Costante Testa was elected as Vice-president. The Secretary and Treasurer were Tito Galliazzo and Antonietta Barolo, respectively.

With the passing of time, the Association progressively grew to the point where, currently, it has a membership of 150 families.

It is still a small Association, but a wellorganized, strong and dynamic one.

The festivities organized every year to celebrate St Anthony, at the Veneto Social Club, have always had great success and VENETO SOCIAL CLUB - XX° - 59

celebrazione di Sant'Antonio, hanno riscosso sempre un grande successo, anche nel numero di partecipanti.

Annualmente organizziamo per i nostri associati gite di quattro o cinque giorni sempre in luoghi diversi: siamo andati in South Australia, nel New South Wales, a Canberra e recentemente in Tasmania. Siamo stati in diversi posti di interesse turistico nel Victoria. Abbiamo visitato la Chiesetta Alpina di Mt Buller e abbiamo fatto diverse gite nel N.S.W. per giocare alle "Poker Machine". Ora queste macchinette da gioco le abbiamo al Veneto Social Club e pertanto non sara pin necessario andare oltre confine per giocare d'azzardo.

I nostri numerosi picnic sono diventati famosi per la varieta e l'abbondanza dei cibi e cosi pure le nostre cene familiari al Veneto Social Club per l'allegria e la numerosa partecipazione.

Dal 3 al 6 ottobre 1992 6 stato tenuto a Sydney it primo incontro delle associazioni padovane dei vari stati con la partecipazione delle rappresentanze del N.S.W., del Victoria e del South Australia.

Duecentocinquanta erano i partecipanti a questo primo raduno i quali, dopo aver visitato i luoghi pin caratteristici di Sydney con l'immancabile gita di quattro ore sulla baia, si sono riuniti al Club Marconi per festeggiare. Dato it grande successo di questo primo incontro si a deciso the l'avvenimento dovra ripetersi ogni due anni alternando le visite da uno stato all'altro.

Fra tutte queste attivita sociali si devono ricordare le iniziative per beneficienza fra cui importante e stata la VENETO SOCIAL CLUB - XX' - 62

have attracted a large number of people.

Annually, we organize trips of three to four days' duration, for our members, always to different places. We have been to South Australia, N.S.W., Canberra and, recently, to Tasmania. We have been to various tourist attractions in Victoria. We visited the Little Alpine Church in Mt Buller and we made various trips to N.S.W., to play the pokies.

Now that we have these poker machines at the Veneto Social Club, it is no longer necessary to go across the border in order to play.

Our numerous picnics have become famous for the variety and abundance of good food and so have our family dinners, at the Veneto Social Club, for their mirth and large participation.

On the 3rd to the 6th of October, 1992, the first reunion of the Associazioni Padovane from various States, was held in Sydney, with in attendance representatives from the Associations in N.S.W., Victoria and South Australia. Present at this first reunion were two hundred and fifty members who, after having visited Sydney's most characteristic sites, including the not to be missed four hour tour of the bay, met at the Marconi Club to celebrate. Given the great success of this first reunion, it was decided to repeat the event on a two yearly basis, alternating visits from one State to the next.

Amongst all these social activities, we must remember the charity work of which, our participation in the Miss Fundraiser of the Year Contest, was an important one.

Our representative, Miss Katia Miolo, came second, donating the raised sum of $19,250 to the Villaggio Vaccari.

Our Association also donated $10,000 to the Centro Assisi, which entitled us to be listed in the Register of Honour, to receive Life Membership and a Gold Medal. Above all, it made us proud to have contributed to this community work which helps our elderly people. We also donated $500 to the Little Alpine Church in Mt Buller. In these past seven years of association we've raised more than $30,000 for charity and it is our intention to continue along this path.

We would like to thank the Veneto Social Club for housing our Association and for making our activities possible and pleasant, by enabling us to develop our social calendar and fund raising activities.

Parlare delle origini e raccontare la storia di una particolare comunita etnica come la nostra 6 veramente difficile.

Come si possono condensare in poche pagine tutte le aspirazioni, le ambizioni e tutti i sogni di cosi tante persone che, attraverso gli anni, hanno contribuito alla vita del nostro ente e che hanno dato cosi tanto del loro tempo e dei loro sforzi, senza alcun egoismo.

Comunque, come in tutte le storie, c'6 sempre un principio, e la nostra cominci6 con un gruppo di persone che veramente aveva capito che, per essere un buon australiano, si doveva prima essere fieri delle proprie origini e della propria cultura.

La provincia di Vicenza, terra delle nostre origini, 6 situata al centro-ovest del Veneto. Una zona cosi bella e diversa, dalle sue grandi pianure a sud, con i suoi molti fiumi, alle sue montagne delle Prealpi Veneziane.

La terra che si lascio per cercare di migliorare, non solo la nostra vita, ma la vita delle future generazioni, 6 una terra che aveva poco da offrirci nel dopoguerra, ma che, nonostante ci6, 6 rimasta impressa nei nostri cuori. Una terra da cui non ci si potra mai staccare. I vicentini di Melbourne si incontravano regolarmente al Veneto VENETO SOCIAL CLUB - XX' - 86

To tell the story of the origins and history of a particular ethnic community such as ours is indeed difficult. How does one condense the aspirations, ambitions and dreams of so many people who over the years have contributed to the life of our "Ente" and who have given so unselfishly of their time and efforts? But, as in all stories, each particular one has its own beginning, and ours began with a group of people who truly believed that in order to be a good "Australian", one must first be proud of their origins and heritage.

The province of Vicenza, the land of our origin, is situated in the central West of the Veneto region, an area so beautifully diverse, from its broad plains of the South, with its many rivers, to its mountains of the Venetian Pre-Alps. The land we left behind in order to improve not only our lives, but the lives of the future generations which will come after we have long gone, a land which had little to offer in the post war years but nevertheless is embedded deep in our hearts, and with which its ties can never be broken.

The Vicentini residing in Melbourne would regularly meet at the Veneto Social Club, in Bulleen, a Club enriched in the traditions of our region, and a place most of us call a second home. It was always the ambition of this particular group that an association be formed, to have its own identity, to meet on a regular basis, to share a glass of wine and a chit-chat amongst friends; a very humble beginning indeed, but one so rich in genuine friendship.

And so it was that Luciana Dal Bosco approached Carlo Valmorbida to seek his help and guidance in forming this "Ente".

On the 14th of February, 1984, a group of people, namely, Gr. Uff. Carlo Valmorbida, Luciana Dal Bosco, Fulvia and Davide Barbieri, Tony Pegoraro, Lorenzo Bravo, the late Bruno Traverso, Vilma Tasca, Dr Antonio Stella, Alberto Cortese, John Dal Sasso and Duillio Stocchero met at the home of Carlo Valmorbida, formed the first Provisory Committee, set guide-lines and planned for the future. It was also

Social Club, a Bulleen. Un club ricco di tradizioni della nostra regione e un luogo che quasi tutti not lo si considera una seconda casa. Fu sempre l'ambizione di questo particolare gruppo di formare un'associazione, con una propria identita, per incontrarsi regolarmente a bere un bicchiere di vino e a farsi una chiacchierata tra amici. Un inizio molto umile ma ricco di vera amicizia.

E cosi fu che Luciana Dal Bosco cerc6 l'aiuto e it consiglio di Carlo Valmorbida per formare questo ente. 11 14 febbraio 1984, il seguente gruppo di persone: Gr. Uff. Carlo Valmorbida, Luciana Dal Bosco, Fulvia e Davide Barbieri, Tony Pegoraro, Lorenzo Bravo, il fu Bruno Traverso, Vilma Tasca, it Dott. Antonio Stella, Alberto Cortese, John Dal Sasso e Duilio Stocchero si incontrarono a casa di Carlo Valmorbida dove formarono it primo comitato provvisorio, stabilirono una linea di procedimento e fecero progetti per il futuro. Allo stesso tempo, fu anche suggerito di nominare un cappellano e it reverendo Padre Birollo fu interpellato; egli, di seguito, diresse it gruppo al Rev. Padre Savino Bernardi (allora parroco della Chiesa Cattolica di San Luca a Lalor) it quale accett6 questo incarico con grande piacere.

Fu durante questa occasione che it Dott Antonio Stella presento al gruppo la prima bandiera che avesse mai lasciato Vicenza, la bandiera dei vicentini nel mondo, la quale fu tenuta originalmente dal defunto Fulvio Valmorbida, padre di Carlo.

La prima assemblea generale annuale dell'Ente Vicentini nel Mondo fu tenuta al Veneto Social Club, giovedi 1 marzo 1984. La riunione fu presieduta da Carlo Valmorbida e furono presenti circa 200 persone.

L'entusiasmo dei vicentini fu caloroso.

Furono preparati degli elenchi, non solo per la tessera di associazione, ma anche per l'abbonamento alla rivista "Vicentini nel Mondo" che sarebbe stata spedita a ogni membro, direttamente da Vicenza. Ci furono le elezioni ed it primo comitato fu formato dalle seguenti persone: L. Dal Bosco (presidente), A.Montese & B.Bonomo (vicepresidenti) F.Barbieri (tesoriere) Rev Padre S.Bernardi e V.Tasca (segretari), G.Cappellotto, C.Carli, J.Cera, G.Cunico, L.Gorlin, G.Munari, T.Pegoraro e D. Stocchero.

Quel primo anno, il 1984, fu un anno di enorme attivita. Furono fissati traguardi che sembravano quasi irraggiungibili, ma i vicentini, instancabili e tenaci li raggiunsero

suggested, at that time, that a chaplain be appointed. The Rev. Father Birollo was approached, who in turn directed the group to the Rev. Father Savino Bernardi (then stationed at St Luke's Catholic Church, in Lalor), who accepted this role with pleasure.

It was also on this occasion that Dr Antonio Stella presented the group with the very first flag to ever leave Vicenza, the flag of the Vicentini nel Mondo, which was originally held by the late Mr Fulvio Valmorbida, father of Carlo.

The first Annual General Meeting of the Ente Vicentini nel Mondo was held at the Veneto Social Club on Thursday, 1st of March, 1984. The meeting was chaired by Carlo Valmorbida and there were approximately 200 people present. The enthusiasm of the Vicentini was magnificent.

Lists were prepared not only for membership purposes, but also for subscriptions to receive the magazine known as "Vicentini nel Mondo", which would be mailed to each member directly from Vicenza. Elections took place and the first Committee was formed as follows: L. Dal Bosco (President), A. Mantese and B. Bonomo (Vice-presidents), F. Barbieri (Treasurer), Rev. Father S.Bernardi and V. Tasca (Secretaries), G. Cappellotto, C. Carli, J. Cera, G. Cunico, L. Gorlin, G. Munari, T. Pegoraro and D. Stocchero (other members).

That first year, 1984, was a year of enormous activity. Goals were set which at the time seemed almost impossible to achieve but, the Vicentini, untiring in their efforts and determination, did achieve and with great success. The first goal was in having our very own Madonna di Monte Berico in Melbourne, and this began with a Mrs Ines Pallota, who approached the Italian Consul (1984, Dr A. Provenzano), who in turn suggested that she contact the recently formed association of Ente Vicentini nel Mondo. Mrs Pallota did contact the Vicentini, and the matter was discussed and voted upon at the very next Committee meeting. Mrs Dal Bosco was authorised by the Committee to approach the Ente Vicentini in Vicenza, for assistance, as she was due to leave for Italy within weeks.

Very little encouragement was given her when she did so, but, we all know Luciana, she never gives up and her perseverance was rewarded. Through the parish priest, Don Israele, at Piovene Rochette, she was introduced to a sculptor from Ortisei, Professor Ferdinando Prinot (A Senior Tutor VENETO SOCIAL CLUB - XX• - 67

La signora Ines Pallota si rivolse al Console italiano (allora Dott Provenzano) it quale le suggeri di mettersi in contatto con l'associazione recentemente formata dei Vicentini nel Mondo. La signora Pallota fece proprio cosi e la faccenda fu discussa e messa al voto in una riunione del comitato. La signora Dal Bosco, dato che stava per partire per l'Italia, fu autorizzata dal comitato a rivolgersi all'Ente Vicentini nel Mondo a Vicenza per essere aiutata nella faccenda.

A Vicenza la signora Dal Bosco ricevette pochissimo appoggio, ma, come ben si sa, Luciana non si arrese e la sua perseveranza fu ricompensata. Tramite it Parroco di Piovene Rocchette, Don Israele, Luciana conobbe uno scultore di Ortisei, it Prof. Ferdinando Prinot, libero docente di scultura all'Universita di Padova, che accent, con grande entusiasmo.

Mentre to scultore incominciava it suo lavoro, i vicentini di Melbourne cominciarono a raccogliere i fondi per poter affrontare le debite spese. Cie, si dimostrO pill facile del previsto, dato che i vicentini, avendo una devota fede nella Madonna di Monte Berico, contribuirono volentieri per questo scopo la cui spesa ammontava ad una somma che superava i settemila dollari.

11 Prof. Prinot cominciti a scolpire la Madonna usando un tipo di pino che si trova soltanto nell'altopiano del Veneto ad un'altitudine di oltre 2000 metri. La Madonna fu completata nella meta del 1985 e fu scolpita in tre parti: la figura centrale e due figure ad ogni lato che rappresentavano i bambini e i vicentini sotto it suo mantello.

La domenica del 17 novembre 1985, nella Chiesa Cattolica di Santa Brigida, a Fitzroy, ci fu la cerimonia di benedizione della statua; it celebrante fu S.E. Mons. All'assemblea generale di marzo 1993, eravamo presenti in 380 soci e l'elenco dei nostri associati annovera 408 famiglie.

E' importante non dimenticarsi dei componenti dei comitati esecutivi, presenti e passati, che hanno guidato questo gruppo al successo di cui oggi gode it nostro Ente.

Our social calendar comprises of: the Easter picnics, the Castagnate, the Melbourne Cup Weekend tour, the Annual Ball in July, the feast of the Madonna di Monte Berico in September, the Christmas picnic and the Festa di San Stefano. Local, interstate and overseas tours have seen a great number of our members visit many parts of Victoria, Tasmania, New Zealand, the Northern Territory and Ularu (Ayers Rock), Sydney, Mt Kosciusko, Adelaide, Canberra, Hawaii and regular trips are made to Italy every year. In its never ending quest to raise money for charitable institutions, our Ente has made donations of over $30,000.00, which comprises donations to not only local institutions, but also the sponsorship of a Filipino child, and a scholarship for a young man to enter the Seminary of the Scalabrinian Fathers, in Manila.

A National Convention of the Ente Vicentini nel Mondo was held, this year, in Myrtleford, Victoria. This Convention was attended by Vicentini from all over Australia. Also present were Dr Danilo Longhi, President of the Ente Vicentini nel Mondo of Vicenza, together with the Mayor of the city of Vicenza. It was a wonderful opportunity to unite as one and discuss the future of our Ente.

From its beginning, to the present time, the Ente Vicentini nel Mondo, Melbourne, has grown enormously. Our Ente, one of 38 associations world wide, is in the top five as being the largest in numbers. There were 380 members present at the Annual General Meeting of March, 1993, and our current membership list numbers 408 families.

It would be remiss, at this point, not to mention the members of the Executive Committee past and present who led this group to the successes which our Ente now enjoys. From 1984 to date, the position of President has been held by: Mrs Luciana Dal Bosco, Mr Bruno Bonomo and Mr Pier Giorgio Cappellotto. Secretaries: Rev. Father Savino Bernardi, Mr P. Si spera anche che si continui a promuovere l'ottimo rapporto che gia esiste con Vicenza, e soprattutto, si spera che la nostra gioventii sia incoraggiata e accolta a braccia aperte a partecipare nella nostra comunita.

He has given us his support for the past seven years and one can't even begin to imagine the number of voluntary hours he has contributed.

Our hopes for the future? L'Associazione Veronesi nel Mondo veniva fondata circa vent'anni fa a Verona da alcuni emigranti che a loro volta erano rientrati in patria. Lo scopo era ben preciso, cioe quello di tenere viva l'originalita italiana ma soprattutto veneta e veronese di tutti gli emigrati sparsi per it mondo. Cosi, nel 1986, in occasione della visita di una commissione veronese, anche qui a Melbourne veniva fatto un primo comitato composto dai seguenti signori: Carlo Brunelli (presidente), Osvaldo Biasi (vice presidente), Giancarlo Giusti (segretario), Piero Veronese (tesoriere), e i consiglieri Antonio Piccoli, Mario Cora, Lorenzo Legnagi.

Oh ospiti al loro arrivo vennero accolti da un gruppo di veronesi che festeggiarono l'avvenimento al Veneto Social Club.

L'idea di formare un'associazione era ormai in mente e, con it ritorno dall'Italia, dopo una permanenza di due anni, di Renzo Zanella e famiglia, nel marzo 1987, assieme ad altri 17 veronesi si formava it primo comitato con it nome di Associazione Veronesi nel Mondo di Melbourne. A Piero Veronese veniva affidata la presidenza, vice presidente era Renzo Zanella, tesoriere Antonio Piccoli, segretario Carlo Brunelli, consiglieri, Giancarlo Giusti, Toni Colpo e VENETO SOCIAL CLUB - XX' - 78

The Associazione Veronesi nel Mondo was formed approximately twenty years ago, in Verona, by some migrants who had returned to their homeland. Its aim was precise: to keep their Italian heritage alive but,in particular, the Veneto and Veronese traditions of all those migrants scattered across the world. Hence, in 1986, especially for the occasion of a visit by a Veronese delegation, a committee was formed, here in Melbourne, by the following people: Carlo Brunelli (President), Osvaldo Biasi (Vice-President), Giancarlo Giusti (Secretary), Piero Veronese (Treasurer) and other members, Antonio Piccoli, Mario Cora and Lorenzo Legnagi.

Upon arriving, the guests were welcomed by a group of Veronese who, together, celebrated their arrival at the Veneto Social Club. The idea of establishing an association was planted. In March 1987, with the return from Italy (after two years of residency) of Renzo Zanella and family the first committee was formed, with seventeen other Veronese, under the name of "Associazione Veronesi nel Mondo di Melbourne".

Piero Veronese was elected President; Renzo Zanella, Vice-president; Antonio Piccoli, Treasurer; Carlo Brunelli, Secretary and other members were Giancarlo Giusti, Toni Colpo and Osvaldo Biasi.

On the 2nd of March, 1991, new elections were held during which Renzo Zanella was handed the Presidency. He was re-elected a year later with the following new Committee: Vice-president:Giancarlo Giusti; Secretaries: Alberto and Silvana Mizzon; Treasurer: Antonio Piccoli; Cashier: Palma Azzolini and the Cay. Giuseppe Skrezenek. From that point onwards, our Association continued to grow and thus we began to organize various different activities such as, social and cultural gatherings; dinner dances (always held at the Veneto Social Club); trips in order to seek out other "paesani" as, for example, the Veronese living in Griffith, N.S.W., not to mention the picnics which the Veronese and their friends increasingly attended.

Da quel momento la nostra simpatica associazione si ingrandiva sempre di pin e cosi si iniziavano diverse attivita, quali riunioni sociali e culturali, "dinner dances" svolti sempre al Veneto Social Club, gite per andare alla ricerca di altri paesani come ad esempio i veronesi che si trovano a Griffith nel N.S.W., per non parlare dei picnic ai quali i veronesi ed amici partecipano sempre pin numerosi.

L'Associazione Veronesi nel Mondo ha per scopo principale it ritrovarsi tra compaesani e poter comunicare nel nostro dialetto e tener sempre vive le nostre tradizioni.

Di veronesi conosciuti sparsi per il mondo siamo circa cinque mila, qui a Melbourne siamo all'incirca 70 - 75 famiglie.

L'emigrazione veronese a una tra le pia vecchie, si possono trovare nomi di famiglie veronesi che verso la fine del 1800 emigrarono in Australia. I primi insediamenti furono nelle zone agricole. I veronesi vennero in questa terra gia con specializzazioni come ad esempio la coltura delle pesche, riso e vigneti. I primi emigranti italiani trasferiti a Griffith furono i veronesi. Ancora nei primi anni di questo secolo provenivano dal Cerro, Sant'Anna del Faedo e dintorni, altri vennero a Melbourne a lavorare nelle fabbriche di meccanica, altri, provenienti dal basso veronese, portarono la loro tradizionale lavorazione del legno intagliato ed altri con il marmo.

I veronesi si distinsero non solo come grandi lavoratori ma anche per la specializzazione dei loro mestieri. Sebbene abbiano trascorso tanti anni lontani da Verona, i veronesi mantengono gelosamente le proprie tradizioni e i propri valori culturali, ed 6 cosi che l'Associazione Veronesi nel Mondo di Melbourne riunisce i soci che, assieme alle loro famiglie ed amici, partecipano alle feste tradizionali come il fine carnevale, detto "Venerdi Gnocolar" che si svolge sempre nella sala Venezia del Veneto Social Club, il venerdi prima delle ceneri. The principal aim of the Associazione Veronesi nel Mondo is the gathering together of fellow "paesani", so as to be able to communicate in our dialect and to keep our traditions alive. The known number of Veronese scattered across the world is approximately five thousand. Here, in Melbourne, there are approximately seventy to seventy-five known families. The migration of the Veronese is amongst one of the oldest; we have been able to find names of families who migrated to Australia towards the end of the 1800's. The first settlements were in agricultural areas. The Veronese came to this country with specialized knowledge in the cultivation of peaches, rice and grape vines. They were the first Italian migrants to be transferred to Griffith. Still, at the turn of the century, migrants were coming from the Cerro, Sant'Anna Del Faedo and its environs.

Others came to Melbourne to work in factories, in the area of mechanics and others, coming from the "basso veronese", brought with them their traditions of carved woodwork whilst some still brought their skills in marble work.

COMUNilay2ITANA Nel 1975 it signor Bruno Bonomo, assieme alla moglie ed ai sei figli, ha fatto rientro ad Asiago, paese d'origine, per una vacanza e per far conoscere ai suoi figli i parenti, gli amici, le bellezze e Pospitalita della genie dell'Altopiano di Asiago. In questa occasione ha incontrato pin volte don Antonio Bortoli, sacerdote dinamico, che si e subito interessato della situazione degli emigranti asiaghesi in Australia, ha chiesto notizie delle Toro condizioni economiche, umane e sociali, esprimendo anche it desiderio di venire a conoscere personalmente la numerosa comunita di asiaghesi trasferiti in questo continente che fa parte integrante di quella che vive in paese.

Bruno Bonomo, al ritorno, entusiasta per l'iniziativa di ospitare a Melbourne un gruppo di asiaghesi guidato da don Antonio, ha subito preso contatto con altri paesani ugualmente generosi ed attaccati alle tradizioni ed alla cultura asiaghese, per creare una struttura organizzativa in grado di facilitare un eventuale viaggio di gruppo.

In 1975, Mr Bruno Bonomo, accompanied by his wife and six children, returned on holidays to Asiago, his place of origin, to enable his children to meet relatives and friends as well as to witness the beauty and hospitality of the people of the Altopiano di Asiago. On this occasion, he frequently met with Father Antonio Bortoli, a dynamic priest, who immediately became interested in the life of migrants from Asiago, in Australia. He wanted news about their economic, social and living conditions and expressed interest in personally coming to meet the large community from Asiago, who moved to this continent and who is an integral part of the community living in the town.

Bruno Bonomo was very enthused by the idea of offering hospitality to a group of Asiaghesi, coming to Melbourne, guided by Father Antonio. Hence, upon his return, he immediately contacted other townsfolk whom he knew to be equally generous and attached to the Asiaghese culture and traditions, so as to create an organizational structure to

Si puo calcolare che circa mille persone sono venute dall'Altopiano per incontrare parenti ed amici. Non c'6 famiglia che non abbia avuto un congiunto in visita. Uguale calore e spirito di accoglienza ritrovano tutti coloro che ritornano sull'Altopiano per una vacanza.

Questo scambio di visite e la realizzazione di progetti interscambio culturale hanno inspirato la creazione di una associazione denominata "Comunita Montana" diretta da un comitato alla cui presidenza 6 stato eletto il signor Tony Bortoli.

Gli asiaghesi hanno dimostrato, in questi anni, d'essere sensibili ai valori umani della famiglia e dell'amicizia, stabilendo rapporti costanti e intensi con i "fratelli" in patria, nella certezza che anche in futuro questo flusso di visite continuera ad alimentare una delle piii attive e costruttive comunita paesane e "montane" presenti in Australia.

Un legame di cordiality e di cultura 6 costituito dalla rivista "Teri-Oggi-Domani" che molti asiaghesi ricevono a domicilio e fa parte della "biblioteca" di famiglia, utile anche per i nostri giovani che imparano cosi a conoscere e ad amare Asiago, i sette Comuni e il piti bel Altopiano d'Italia.

Per concludere, e come testimonianza di efficienza degli organizzatori, ricordiamo che con le visite del 1976, 1981, 1984, 1988 e 1992, sono giunte in Australia numerose autorita cittadine, sindaco compreso, e della Comunita Montana, oltre al prestigioso "Coro Asiago" che ha lasciato un ricordo vivissimo di professionalita ovunque si 6 esibito.

It brought back indescribable memories and emotions. Other trips followed between intervals of three to four years. Father Antonio Bortoli, thanks to these reunions, became a part of all the families and, in spirit, became pastor of that part of the Asiaghese community living thousands of kilometres away from the mother parish.

Approximately one thousand people came from the Altopiano to visit relatives and friends. There isn't a family who has not been visited by a relative. The same warmth of spirit and welcome is found by all those who return for a holiday to the Altopiano.

This exchange of visits and the realization of these cultural exchanges has inspired the creation of an Association called the Comunita Montana. It is run by a Committee and its elected President is Mr Tony Bortoli.

The Asiaghesi have demonstrated, in these past years, to be sensitive to the humane values of family and friendship, through the establishment of strong and reliable ties with kinsfolk in the homeland, with the belief that in the future these visits will continue and will serve to foster one of the most active and constructive country and "montane" communities existent in Australia.

A friendly and cultural tie is established through the magazine, "leri-Oggi-Domani", which many Asiaghesi receive at home. It forms part of the family's reading and is also useful to our young people who, thus, learn to know and love Asiago, the seven Comuni and the most beautiful Altopiano in Italy.

To conclude and, as a tribute to the efficiency of the organizers, we recall that with the 1976, 1981, 1984, 1988 and 1992 visits, many city functionaries, including the Mayor, came to Australia. As well, from the Comunita Montana came the prestigious Coro Asiago, who left behind a vivid memory of professionalism, wherever it performed.

The Comunita Montana organizes the Annual Ball and other convivial reunions.

Each gathering is characterized by a sense of family and it takes place in an atmosphere of warmth and friendship.

L'Associazione dei bellunesi nacque nel 1982, quando quattro uomini decisero di formare un comitato che avrebbe radunato assieme la gente bellunese. La prima riunione si svolse al Veneto Social Club con Gilberto Martini, Mariano Cerato, Dario Socci e Franco De Bortoli che furono i soci fondatori. Gilberto Martini ebbe l'incarico di presidente, it primo dell'Associazione; una carica che mantenne per cinque anni.

Frank Cengia prese l'incarico per un anno, poi Mariano Cerato fu in carica per i bellunesi per quattro anni, fino a quando Valerio Faoro fu eletto nel 1991. Gilberto Martini ebbe anche l'incarico di presidente del Veneto Social Club negli anni 1981/'83.

Lo scopo principale del comitato 6 di organizzare attivita per radunare assieme i soci regolarmente, durante l'anno. Fra queste attivita c'6 un "Dinner Dance" annuale, un picnic e una gita di quattro giorni, in autobus, che di solito viene organizzata per it "Melbourne Cup" weekend, a novembre.

The Association of Bellunesi began in 1982, when four men decided to organize themselves into a committee which would bring the Bellunesi people together. The first meeting took place at the Veneto Social Club with Gilberto Martini, Mariano Cerato, Dario Soci and Franco De Bortoli being the founding members. Gilberto Martini served as the first President of the Association, a position he filled for five years. Frank Cengia took on the task for a year, then Mariano Cerato served the Bellunesi for four years, until Valerio Faoro took over in 1991.

The Committee's main objective is to organize activities which bring its members together regularly, throughout the year.

These include an Annual Dinner Dance, a Picnic and a four day bus trip, which is usually held on the November Cup Weekend.

The Association is based at the Freccia Azzurra Club, in Keysborough.

The Annual General Meeting is normally held in March, and a new committee is elected each year.

La nostra Associazione celebra quest'anno it 20' anniversario della fondazione. Fu infatti nel 1973 che un gruppo di uomini con a capo Don Canuto Toso si sono riuniti nella Camera di Commercio di Treviso per dare inizio ad un sodalizio a sfondo cristiano e apolitico allo scopo di tenere uniti i trevisani sparsi nel mondo.

La sezione di Melbourne ha le sue origini pin o meno nello stesso anno sotto la guida di Frank Marchesin. Gli inizi furono un po' timidi qui a Melbourne e fu nel 1977 che nuova linfa e un nuovo impulso fu portato da nuove forze che si erano aggiunte al comitato direttivo. 11 primo "dinner dance" sotto la nuova gestione ebbe un grande successo. This year our Association celebrates its twentieth year of existence. It was in 1973 when a group of men, headed by Father Canuto Toso, met in the Treviso Chamber of Commerce to establish an Association with a Christian and apolitical background, with the aim of uniting the Trevisani scattered across the world. The Melbourne group dates its origins to approximately the same year, under the guidance of Father Frank Marchesin.

Here in Melbourne, its beginnings were a little shaky and it wasn't until 1977 that new life was injected into it through new members who joined the Executive Committee. The first Dinner Dance under this new Committee was a great success. More than 430 people attended the dance which was held in the Sala San Marco, of the Veneto Social Club. This first social event was followed by another in Werribee, where more than 300 guests were present. During 1978, the Committee began to run the Association with a more business-like approach, organizing itself in a formal structure and maintaining contact with both its members and the Head Association in Treviso. Even the social events were given fixed dates, enabling members to set time aside and thus resulting with a higher number of participants.

In 1979, as well as giving support to the Villaggio per Anziani in South Morang, it also organized various events to give support to our representative in the Miss Italian Community. It was, in fact, the Miss Trevisani nel Mondo, Ms T. Scolaro of Werribee, to win the title of Miss Charity Queen, after having raised over $25,000.

1980 was a year of both success and mourning. The social gatherings were attended by a great number of people. Some members of our Association passed away, leaving us for a better place. The disaster in Irpinia occurred and the Trevisani did not fail to make their contribution so as to help, continuing, nonetheless, to donate their annual contribution to the Villaggio in South Morang. In ottobre ci fu it terzo raduno nazionale dei trevisani a Sydney. Anche questa volta da Melbourne partirono tre corriere. Bellissima la gita in vaporetto della baia di Sydney. Si riunirono insieme in un'unica barca, 130 trevisani da Melbourne, 90 da Griffith e 45 da Myrtleford. Si pui5 immaginare, pin che descrivere, it pranzo, le bibite, 1'allegria, i canti, le barzellette e tutto quello che capitO in quelle quattro ore.

Nel 1992 ci fu un cambiamento di rilievo in seno al Comitato A.T.M.. 11 rappresentante per Werribee, Orazio Scolaro, dopo tanti anni di servizio, per motivi di lavoro si dimise e it suo posto venne preso da Andrea Bettiol da Hoppers Crossing.

Durante il picnic di marzo it Comitato assegno al Comm. Carlo Valmorbida 1'assegno di $25.000,00 per il Centro Assisi divenendo cosi il primo Socio Benefattore del Centro. In aprile una bella comitiva volo fino ad Alice Springs per poi puntare al nord attraverso it tanto decantato Kakadu National Park. Interessante it viaggio verso il Nord Australia e bellissima Darwin.

In luglio una comitiva andel in Italia con una sosta di quattro giorni a Bangkok.

La rappresentanza dall'Australia al raduno mondiale dei trevisani sulla Piana del Cansiglio fu rilevante. Migliaia di trevisani e bellunesi passarono insieme una giornata memorabile, in un'atmosfera di vera cordialita.

Nel 1993 fra le attivita pin rilevanti citiamo una gita a Cooma, Wagga Wagga, Griffith, Swan Hill.

Ora I'A.T.M. si sta preparando per il 1994. Nel mese di ottobre sara la volta di Melbourne a dover ospitare il quarto raduno nazionale dei Trevisani. 11 comitato ha gia inviato it segretario in Italia per mettersi in contatto con vane autorita. Hanno aderito, it Vescovo di Treviso, Mons. Paolo Magnani, it presidente della Cassamarca, on. De Poli, it presidente dell'A.T.M., Giuseppe Zanini, vari membri della Direzione Centrale e si spera nell'adesione di un folto gruppo di amici e parenti.

Congratulazione quindi a tutti quelli che si sacrificano e danno una mano perch la Trevisani nel Mondo di Melbourne continui ad essere, non solo la pin numerosa, ma anche la pin fattiva delle sezioni A.T.M..

In October, the third National Reunion of the Trevisani was held in Sydney. This time, also, three bus loads left from Melbourne.

The tour of the bay, on a steamboat, was excellent. On the one boat were gathered 130 Trevisani from Melbourne, 90 from Griffith and 45 from Myrtleford. One can probably imagine, rather than describe, the meal, the drinks, the mirth, the singing, the jokes and all else that happened in those four hours.

In 1992, a change was made to the membership of the Executive Committee.

The Werribee representative, Orazio Scolaro, stepped down due to work commitments and his position was taken up by Andrea Bettiol of Hoppers Crossing.

During the March picnic, the Committee handed a cheque for $25,000 to the Comm.

Carlo Valmorbida, for the Centro Assisi, thus becoming the first Member Benefactor of the Centro. In April, another group flew to Alice Spring to then head north, across the highly acclaimed Kakadu National Park. The trip across Northern Australia was interesting and Darwin was extremely beautiful.

In July, a group went to Italy with a four day stop-over in Bangkok. Australia's representation at the World Reunion of the Trevisani, at Piana del Cansiglio, was of a considerable number. Thousands of Trevisani and Bellunesi spent a memorable day together, in a truly cordial atmosphere.

Amongst the most outstanding activities of 1993, we'd like to mention a trip to Cooma, Wagga Wagga. Griffith and Swan Hill. Now the Associazione Trevisani nel Mondo is preparing itself for 1994. In October, it will be Melbourne's turn to host the fourth National Reunion of the Trevisani. The Committee has already sent its Secretary to Italy, in order to approach various authorities. They have received acceptances from the Bishop of Treviso, Mons. Paolo Magnani, the President of the Cassamarca, the Hon. De Poli, the President of the Associazione Trevisani nel Mondo, Mr Giuseppe Zanini, various members of the Central Administration and we hope to receive acceptances from a large group of friends and relatives.

Congratulations, therefore, to all those who sacrifice themselves and give a helping hand so that Melbourne's Trevisani nel Mondo can continue to be not only the largest in numbers, but also the most active of all the Associations of the Trevisani nel Mondo.
