President

PRESIDENT’S REPORT LOUIS CREMA Dear members and friends I hope my report finds you and your families all well as we approach Christmas 2023. As the end of the year approaches, the Veneto Club prepares to celebrate another big milestone. From the 8th–10th December, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Veneto Club premises; and will have a weekend of celebrations, entertainment and fun for all members and your families to commemorate this. What a great achievement for us all and something that we should all be very proud of! From our very first committee back in the late 1960’s, to all the committees over the last five decades, through to my current committee, a huge thank you for your work and dedication that has made our Club the success that it is today. The same thank you applies to all the various sub-committees and volunteers and to all our members and friends who have contributed to the success of our Club. The Club would not be what it is without our management and all our staff who, are dedicated in providing a high level of service to our members and friends. During the last 50 years, we have faced challenges and adversities, survived the recession of the early 1990’s, but here we are today still standing tall and proud! As you all know and can see, we are facing more challenges ahead as the huge North East Link Project gets built on our front door step. During this period of construction and disruption, I urge all our members and friends to keep attending our Club even though our carpark is constantly changing; we need the business to keep going. Fortunately, we have no debt and are in a strong financial position, unfortunately we are experiencing a decline in trading, so I urge you to all keep coming to our Club so that we can get through this disruptive period successfully. On a good note, we have completed a refurbishment of our baracca located at the very back of our land which was one of our very first gathering places after the land was purchased. So, it’s fitting to have this renovation done after more than 50 years of continual use and completed ready to show off to our members when celebrating our 50th anniversary. In closing, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe new year and hope to see you around the Club.

FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT EUGENE BRAZZALE It would come as no surprise to those of you that are regular visitors to the Veneto Club, that the disruption to the Club’s activities caused by the roadworks on Bulleen Road have been significant. As substantial as the impact has been, it was not unexpected by the Board and management of the Club. As you would all know, the North East Link Project was thrust upon us a few years ago and it’s fair to say that the Club has played an important role in forming stakeholder opinion and, as much as possible, shaping the execution of the project. Over the past couple of years, the Board has taken many major steps in preparation for this impending disruption. A sub-committee was appointed to liaise with NELP and the projects’ nominated builder to represent the Veneto Clubs interest in the operational execution of the project. My personal thanks go to Louis Crema, Frank Freschi and Joe Morello for their untiring work on this committee. Many hours have also been spent liaising with state and local government representatives to ensure that the impact to the Club’s activities is kept to a minimum. The Board also made important decisions pertaining to stabilising the finances of the Club so that the financial impact on the Club of the works were minimised. Reflecting on the current situation, I am convinced that the Club will come out of this ‘short-term pain’ much better and stronger for it. A few clear examples of this will be new and improved parking facilities, availability of new and improved football facilities (our very own recently upgraded facilities plus usage of the new Templestowe Road facility) and of course, the refurbished Baracca. This year is also a most important year in the story of the Veneto Club, as it marks the 50th Anniversary of the opening of our historically and architecturally significant Veneto Club building. We have planned a weekend of celebrations to commemorate this event and we encourage all members and friends to come and participate in those celebrations. We should all feel a sense of honour when we reflect on the significance of our Club to our community. Our forefathers had the vision of creating a little corner of the Veneto in their adopted homeland, and had the courage to convert that vision to reality. I believe we should all celebrate this significant milestone with pride and passion. Speaking of passion, I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge our President Louis Crema. On 1st October 2023, La Regione Veneta presented Louis the very prestigious and much deserved award titled “Premio Eccellenze Venete Nel Mondo 2023”. This was awarded to Louis for his continued contribution to Melbourne’s Veneto community and to the construction industry. The Crema family have played and continue to play a very important role in the life of our Club. Louis, with the support of his wife Amanda and brothers Luciano and Romeo has provided great strength in leadership particularly over the past three very challenging years. In closing, I would like to thank all our volunteers and Club sponsors whose contribution cannot be underestimated. A Club like ours can only be as successful as it is because of these volunteers and sponsors, and the sense of community that their contributions generate. I would also like to acknowledge the exceptional efforts of our General Manager and his staff over the past year and thank them for their continued dedication to the Veneto Club.

06

SONYA VELO This is our year to be proud. It’s a year to celebrate that we opened our doors for the first time on 8th December 1973 – that’s half a century ago! I wonder how many people have walked through our doors since that day, hundreds of thousands, possibly even a million.

Vice-Presidents

FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT

When you look at the outside façade and brickwork it’s a reminder of the hard work by not only the builders but most importantly the countless hours worked by the volunteers, especially on the weekends. We have built, adapted and modernised to make our Club both respectful to our founders and at the same time open, welcoming and relevant to the next generations and the wider community. Over the last five decades we have triumphed over floods, unfavourable economic conditions, pandemics and now the current disruptions with the North East Link Project works. At the moment when you look around our landscape, it doesn’t look that great, and to be frank a bit disheartening; our standout archway entrance to the premises is gone and there’s the unsightly construction works surrounding us, not to mention the carpark confusion. But it’s the pain before the gain - we have a beautiful new modern stylish entrance to look forward to that compliments the façade of our building. The weekend of celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of our opening has an event for all tastes and ages. Most exciting is that we will reintroduce you to the new look baracca which is going to bedazzle everyone. Our glamorous baracca will cater for formal events through to the more relaxed ones. A special thank you to all the volunteers that have worked for months to ensure the restoration is complete in time for the 50th anniversary weekend. These volunteers have mirrored what was happening 50 years ago – and it’s quite fitting and symbolic that we will relaunch the Baracca on the weekend of our 50th anniversary. Some of our best traits are our positivity, resilience, generosity, and loyalty. We have fifty years of proof in our history. These are the times that we need to harvest these in supporting the Club whether its dining in our bistro, buying from our deli, playing bocce or squash at our facilities, coming to watch an FCBL match or attending one of our many events. Thank you to all the members for being part of our journey and supporting our continued existence! Thank you to all the volunteers – you are the heartbeat of our Club. Thank you to my fellow committee members past and present for our collaboration on steering the Club in the right direction to ensure we have a positive future, especially Lou who continues to be an inspiring, generous, and positive leader. And last of all, thank you to all the foundation members who had a dream to create the Veneto Club, and with determination, vision, sacrifice, and hard work – made that dream come true so that it could, and is, now enjoyed by generations to come. I hope that you all share the same feeling as I do – a sense of pride and that we are indeed lucky. Happy anniversary Veneto Club.

Secretary

FROM THE SECRETARY LOREN ZANIN Dear Members, The last twelve months have been very challenging for the Veneto Club with the major disruptions caused by the roadworks which unfortunately will continue for some time. However, despite this challenge our membership is at an all time high. As of October 2023, we now have 1,384 members. The highest number since we commenced over 50 years ago. The number of Veneto members increased to 63% of our total membership. This increase in Veneti members is mainly due to the descendants membership drive we conducted over the last 12 months. Many of these new Veneti members are younger, which is beneficial for the future of the Club. Our Soccer teams performed very well and did us proud. Our Senior Women’s team was outstanding, by winning two of the three Cups available in their league. During the year we also managed to get our new constitution approved at the AGM in June 2023. A major change was to allow two board members to be non Veneti members. This will enable a broader representation on the Board from our membership. An important initiative to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the Club House, is the Board’s decision to apply for registration of the façade of the Club House on the Victorian Heritage list of major places in Victoria. The building itself is unique plus the Club house is part of the history of migrant and multicultural groups in Victoria. To all our members, their families, our staff, may 2024 bring you health and happiness.

A Ottobre 2023, abbiamo 1.384 membri.

Treasurer

FROM THE TREASURER DINO DE BORTOLI Financials for the financial Year 1 May 2022 – 30th April 2023 This was another difficult year for the Club. After 2 difficult years through Covid we are again required to manage the Club activities through major interruptions, this time due to the NELP road works and Bulleen Road realignment which are a substantial inconvenience to management, members, and patrons. In April 2023 the Club received $1,630,000 as compensation for the compulsory acquisition of land. This compensation was the major transaction that resulted in the Club recording a profit of $1,452,513 for the financial year. Without the compensation money the Club would have made a $177,000 loss due to cost pressures for food and wages. The compensation money means that our cash holding is very healthy with more than $3.7 million held in various accounts and floats. The Club will be required to commence payment of the gaming licence in the next financial year with payment of $600,000 planned for 2023/24 year. The major debt the Club has is the gaming licence totalling $3.1 million to be paid at $100,000 per quarter over the next 8 years. Many of you would have seen our young soccer players running and kicking the ball on the new soccer pitch. It is a substantial improvement to our facilities enhancing the status of the Club and junior development opportunities. We now look forward to a three-pitch facility, planned to be completed in the 1st half of 2024 on Templestowe Road Bulleen (where the old Golf driving range was located). Our wonderful sporting facilities are all running at a high level with football, squash, tennis, and bocce fully operational. I would like to thank both Karl Hodge for the excellent development of the various Veneto Club sports and David Del Monaco for the continuing development of the FCBL Football (soccer) program. May to October 2023 Membership at the end of April 2023 was 1,372. This is the highest during my time on the committee. The Committee has been working to recover the reduced membership from the last two years with a membership drive targeting Veneto descendant, which has been quite successful. We ask all members to continue to support the Club by renewing membership and to introduce friends and family to the wonderful facilities and culture of the Club. Our operations for this period have been very difficult with revenue for Food, Beverage, Deli, and Sports close to our expectations but supply costs and wage pressures has reduced our margins. Unfortunately, our Gaming revenue is significantly reduced with many patrons preferring alternative venues while we have car park access and Bulleen Road difficulties. It is hoped that once Bulleen Road is completed and our car park returned to more practical access that gaming patrons will return to enjoy our facilities and profits return to appropriate levels. Our strong cash position allows the Committee to refocus on the Sala Venezia project subject to a review of the post pandemic operation and the NELP effect on the Club. ANZ has confidence in the Veneto Club’s operations and has confirmed the availability of funding. The significant on site works with NELP occupying a very large portion of our site has meant that we have decided to reassess the re-development at the end of this financial year. The Committee is focused on continuing to improve the Club’s financial position in all areas to ensure a strong growing facility that continues to support the Veneto sporting activities, heritage, and culture, well into the future. This vision cannot be achieved without the continuous support of our management team, their staff and the many volunteers that have contributed during the year to enhance and advance the Veneto Club for the benefit of all members. Thank you to Joe Morello and his team and all the volunteers for your hard work during this difficult year.

11

JOE MORELLO I am honoured to be writing this report in the Veneto Club’s 50th year. After almost 19 years as General Manager of this great Club, I have seen so many changes here and the one thing that never ceases to amaze me is the power of the Veneto Club brand. It is recognised all over the world. We have planned a series of celebratory events to mark this very important milestone and it would great to see as many members as possible at these events. All our achievements over the past 50 years, continue to keep our links to our heritage strong, and cement our reputation, as one of the best clubs in Victoria and Australia.

General Manager

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

We have been managing two years of continuous disruption imposed on us by the NELP. The disruptions that the Club has experienced have been enormous, so much so, that our trade is severely depleted. Although the NELP working group appointed by the Veneto Club board have been working tirelessly to minimise disruption and keep our members informed, it has been a very slow and arduous process. The relocation of Bulleen Road much closer to the Club will simplify and improve access to the Club, especially with the return of our main sign to identify the Club. The hospitality industry like many other industries is still suffering from the aftereffects of the pandemic in terms of availability of experienced workforce. Many people are leaving the industry which is making it extremely challenging to staff all our different departments. Considering these challenges, I must say the Club has still managed to host many significant events including turning the basketball court into a function centre in October, whereby the Club hosted the Trevisani Nel Mondo for their 13th National Convegno with more than 500 delegates. This event was a huge success not only for the Trevisani but also for the wonderful Veneto Club team that was able to transform the space into a beautiful function room and cater for two (5 and 4 course) banquets over the weekend. Looking to the future, one of the most exciting projects we have been able to complete is the refurbishment of La Baracca. This space will truly be a magnificent testimony to the forefathers that had the original vision for the Veneto Club. Our new baracca now boasts a modernised kitchen, enclosed function room and updated amenities. I would welcome everyone to take a walk to La Baracca and see the transformation. The dedication of our volunteers, the affiliations forged with our sponsors, and patronage from our members and friends who dine, play sport and attend our events, all play a crucial role in sustaining our establishment. It is through the collective efforts of all of these, that our Club is fortified, and it is this unified dedication that will continue to drive us forward into the future. In closing, I look forward to celebrating with you at our upcoming 50th Anniversary events. I also thank the Veneto Club committee headed by Louis Crema, for their strong leadership and direction and my family for their continued support.

NORTH EAST LINK PROJECT SUMMARY FRANK FRESCHI

CHAIR OF VC-NELP NEGOTIATIONS SUB-COMMITTEE As the second summary report on North East Link Project, no doubt you have witnessed significant changes to our Clubs property during the last twelve months. Changes to traffic flow and our car park landscape which at first glance make it almost unrecognizable. The loss of some of our familiar iconic landmarks such as the entrance archway and signage; all part of our Club’s character and atmosphere have been removed. The Club has almost became hidden from view behind 200m barrier walls of a massive construction site for more than seven months. This has been disheartening and frustrating for some, which has had a noticeable impact on our trading and patronage. It’s through the ongoing loyalty, patronage and support from members that keeps our Club going during these trying times. The good news is the worst of NELP’s construction works on to the Veneto Club site is going to progressively reduce from December, just in time for our 50th Anniversary celebrations. With the realigned Bulleen Road, we will be able to re-establish iconic landmarks to herald the Veneto Club has ‘risen from the construction upheaval’ and get back to normal business, and the Clubs management team have plans to get all the usual operations back into full swing. Looking to 2024, we are working on the detailed design plans for approving the Veneto Club’s Masterplan and the construction phase that follows. This will bring car parking closer to the Club premises, with the relocation of our tennis courts to the south onto the newly acquired land. So, the Veneto Club is still here, its reputation is strong, and its prominence restored, and we can confidently look to another 50 years with pride as a vibrant Club for future generations. We have demonstrated resilience with your backing and the perseverance to survive the impact of North East Link Project, so we will emerge with enhanced quality Club and sporting facilities. I encourage everyone’s return to the Club and share celebrating a brighter future together.

These awards are given by the Veneto Regional Government, yearly, to only a few selected Veneti around the world, for maintaining the true Veneto values and their contribution to the worldwide community in the fields of culture, research, and their business achievements. Lou, together with Amanda, his wife, travelled to several cities of the Veneto Region to meet with officials, including the President of the Regional Council Roberto Ciambetti, the Minister Cristiano Corazzari, the Councillor Luciano Sandonà, the Mayor of Treviso Mario Conte, before heading to Vicenza to formally receive the award in person. The ceremony was attended by many including Representatives from the Veneti nel Mondo. Lou was accompanied by the President of the Federation of the Venetian Associations of Victoria, Fabio Sandonà. The award came directly from the Regione del Veneto and was signed by the President Luca Zaia.

Celebrating 50 years

THE VENETO CLUB BUILDING A BRIEF HISTORY SIMON REEVES ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIAN – BUILD HERITAGE P/L

As we now celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the Veneto Club’s premises on 8 December 1973, the story behind it goes further back to the founding of the Club itself. Provision of purpose-built premises was on the agenda at the Club’s inception meeting in early 1967. Various sites were explored before the Club acquired sixteen acres of riverside land at Bulleen the following year, then turned its attention to the twofold necessities of raising funds and engaging an architect. However pictureseque, the proposed site occupied a flood plain that would have lasting implications on the building project, which commenced with prolonged negotiations involving the local council, the MMBW and the Yarra Valley Conservation League. With a planning permit secured in late 1969, the Club formed a building subcommittee and proceeded forthwith. Initially, Club President David Barro suggested that proposals could be invited from local architects of Italian descent in what amounted to a limited architectural competition. This, however, did not prove practical and, after considering a number of architects, engaged Erminio Smrekar (1931-2016), a Triestino who had commenced an architectural course there before migrating to Australia in 1956 and completing his studies in Melbourne. Working for a minor city architect, Smrekar undertook a few private commissions that enabled him to open his own office around 1967. While his earliest solo job, for a motel in Lygon Street, would have been familiar to many members of Melbourne’s Italian community, Smrekar was then better known for several church projects for the Scalabrinian fathers. Nevertheless, he embraced the Veneto Club’s commission with passion and enthusiasm. The initial brief for the Club premises was ambitiously far-reaching, a dance hall big enough for 700 people (the total membership at the time), dining room, public bar, cocktail bar, ladies’ lounge, kitchen, library, billiard room, caretaker’s residence and outdoor facilities for bocce, tennis and soccer. Smrekar’s original design, completed in late 1969, proposed a vast elongated building of sculptural form, elevated on piers to address the flooding concerns. When estimated construction costs proved to be ten times the amount of money available, the Club intensified its fundraising efforts

19

while Smrekar honed his design. With an amended scheme prepared and approved the following year, the Club proceeded with site preparations in anticipation of securing a building permit. Excavation began in early 1971 and, at the end of the year, the Club announced that construction tenders would be called as soon as Smrekar had completed his final working drawings. These drawings, dated early 1972, were a major departure from Smrekar’s earlier scheme. He now proposed a three-storey structure on an unusual centralized plan, best described as a Greek cross, overlaid onto a rotated square. The ground floor was dominated by a large double-height octagonal hall, enveloped by subsidiary areas that included two squash courts, change rooms and toilets. A mezzanine level provided spectators’ galleries and office space, while the top floor comprised a large C-shaped lounge area with extensive kitchen and back-of-house facilities. To the east, fronting Bulleen Road, was a lobby with a projecting bay that contained an eye-catching concrete spiral staircase, visible through a continuous three-storey window. Externally, the flat-roofed building adopted the highly sculptural form that characterised Smrekar’s work at the time, boldly expressed in reinforced concrete. As the architect later explained, the choice of concrete had both symbolic and practical repercussions: he not only deemed its solidity and durability to be apt for the resilient Veneti, but was aware that even his most complex sculpted forms could be readily brought to fruition by Melbourne’s skilled Italian concreters. Hence, the building was brazenly conceived with a structural frame of massive interlocking concrete elements, some enlivened with geometric ornament. This was to contrast with infill of clinker brickwork and bluestone (the latter ultimately omitted), and continuous windows, curved at the edges, with tinted glazing and anodized metal frames. In late 1972, the construction tender was awarded to Bettiol Constructions, a firm of master builders specialising in apartment blocks, shopping centres and factories, and the crucial role of concrete fabrication to the skilled Beppi Crema, co-founder of the highly-regarded Camillo Brothers. Erection of the building continued throughout 1973, with Club members and their families eagerly assisting via a series of weekend ‘working bees’ that reduced the overall construction costs by a third. During the year, Smrekar’s masterplan was amended to include indoor bocce courts – reportedly the first of their kind in Victoria – in a separate but similarly-scaled wing to the west of the Club premises proper. Work on the courts began promptly in the hope that the entire complex would be operational by November. Right on schedule, the official opening took place

20

The building’s striking appearance provoked comment and musing, at the time and since. While Smrekar hinted that his design evoked a ship-like character appropriate for migrant experience (and perhaps a flood-prone site) other observers have perceived an intriguing mix of stylistic influences: the Baroque qualities of the planning and interior, and the heavily modelled concrete that recalls Japanese modernist architecture (which Smrekar cheerfully acknowledged) or the then-emerging idiom now known as Brutalism. For others, especially natives of the region, the building simply reflects an expressive modernist tradition evident in the work of other northern Italian architects such as Carlo Scarpa and Enrico Taglietti.

Celebrating 50 years

on 8 December 1973 in front of a huge crowd of Club members and others, including the Italian Ambassador and the Italian Consul-General. The building was blessed by the Most Rev E G Perkins, auxiliary bishop to Melbourne’s Roman Catholic Archdiocese, before the ribbon was ceremonially cut by the Hon Billy Sneddon, Leader of the Opposition and former Minister for Immigration.

Fittingly, for a structure defined by freeform sculptural qualities in both expression and materials, the new building continued to mould itself to fit the Club’s changing needs over the ensuing years. Smrekar remained as regular architect well into the 1980s, completing various renovations as well as preparing a scheme for a basketball stadium. The mantle of Club architect then passed to a younger firm, Crema Bahramis Pty Ltd, who completed further works, notably the entry gateway, arched canopy and fountain, as well as a new design for the sports stadium that finally opened in 1997. Since then, the building has continued to evolve in accordance with the Club’s remit but one thing is constant: it remains as a lasting tribute to the ambitions, hopes and passions of Melbourne’s tireless Veneti. As architect Smrekar once said, ‘If Venetians in the years to come will call this building their symbol of hearth and home, my aspirations will be filled’.

LOREN ZANIN On 28 November 1969, a Special General Meeting was held for the founding members of the Veneto Club to discuss the funding of the new club house. At this meeting, Erminio Smrekar was introduced as the architect, and the master plan of the club house was discussed. Over the next four years fundraising activities were held to pay for the land and building.

HOW IT ALL STARTED: CREATING A SMALL CORNER OF VENETO IN BULLEEN

The land chosen on Bulleen Road was literally a swampland, which in February 1970 was finally paid for. After much discussion with the MMBW in September 1970 the Club finally received a letter stating: The Board has now accepted the scale and extent of the proposed development contained in the preliminary draft plans. The Club was now able to start its dream of a Little Corner of Veneto here in Melbourne! The first task was to remove the topsoil and level the site. Using their trucks, labour and know-how of Club members, this work was done for free. The land was purchased for $36,000, however, as smart merchants us Venetians are, we were able to sell the topsoil for $70,000! This was a handsome profit to contribute to the construction costs. The final building approval from Doncaster Council was received in June 1970. In May 1971, the project costs of the first stage were estimated at $248,000, with the final build estimate more than double this. At an Extraordinary General meeting on 13 December 1971, Mr David Barro, Club President, reported on the master plan and said that as soon as the architects drawings were finished, they would start. By April 1972 the column foundations were in place and the carpark taking shape. Where possible, Club members helped the builder, especially during weekends, to reduce the financial burden. The club house was finished and officially opened on 8 December 1973 by The Right Hon. Billy Sneddon. There are many accounts of the opening, the thousands of people that attended, the mayhem on the day, but most of all, a sense of overwhelming pride in the realisation that the dream had come true. Erminio Smrekar designed a beautiful building with concrete as its main component. The concrete finishes were carefully supervised under the watchful eye of Beppi Crema. Erminio said, “the use of concrete to me was natural because they (the workers) knew how to handle concrete, and concrete was something that to me reflected that part of Italy. Not Italy generally, but the Veneto area.” Erminio Smrekar pictured our club house as a ship in the night with lights ablaze, a symbol that connects intuitively with the thousands of Italian migrants who would become Club members. Which it has indeed become!

VOLUNTEERS More than half a century on, we continue to maintain the strong Veneto community spirit at our Club; we continue to prosper and face head on the many challenges put before us. Our Veneto spirit is apparent by the gusto and efforts of the countless volunteers around the Club. They strive to keep our culture alive through social activities, which is the basis of the Club and ultimately defines our identity in the community. As part of the Volunteer Week celebrations across Victoria, we hold our annual Volunteers Dinner and celebrate the achievements and give thanks to all our volunteers. We also take the opportunity to shine a light on a standout volunteer for the year. In 2023, Marina Mandoulidis received the award. Whilst Marina is a part time employee of the Club – she has made an enormous contribution as a volunteer in a range of activities such as coordinating the production of this and many previous annual magazines, sponsorship for annual activities, making Crostoli and supporting the Ladies Auxiliary and anziani of the Veneto Club. We are always seeking volunteers to join our Associations or sub committees such as the FCBL (Soccer), Bocce, Squash, Golf, the Alpini and Choir, making Crostoli, the Men’s Shed and of course the Ladies Auxiliary, or you might be interested in helping organise the next Books & Bubbles night. There are also our annual cultural events such as the Sagra di San Marco, Australia Day Picnic, Christmas Picnic, or special projects such as the recently completed Baracca facelift. These would not be possible, without the extraordinary efforts of volunteers. We are always looking for new ideas and initiatives to explore – so if you have an idea for a new initiative or event at the Veneto Club – share it with us. Get in contact with the Clubs committee via email culture@venetoclub.com or if you would prefer to speak to one of our committee members direct – call the Club and they will put you in touch.

Volunteering warms your heart and helps maintain personal wellbeing and social connections. So if you, or any of your family or friends needs to get out or build some new connections email culture@ venetoclub.com to discuss current opportunities, and we will do our best to connect you with one of our groups.

‘GIOVENTÙ IN CANTATA MAROSTICA’ AND ‘GIOVANI VOCI BASSANO’ FABIO SANDONÀ Saturday 12 August at the Veneto Club, an exciting afternoon that we will remember for a long time thanks to “Gioventù in cantata Marostica” and “Giovani Voci Bassano”. A wonderful performance of two distinct parts: the first in English entitled “Panta Rei”, saw the boys and girls performing a breathtaking show with a current theme, leading the audience to reflect on their role within society and to reconnect with the spirit of Earth. The second gave those present an “All-Italian” moment with the artists singing some lyrics that have made the history of Italian music to the like of Va’ Pensiero, Bella ciao, Quel mazzolin di fiori, Sul ponte di Bassano, O sole mio and Signore delle cime. To the youth artists, to the Project Director Cinzia Zanon and her Collaborators Enrico Cenci, Giulia Malvezzi, Manuela Matteazzi, Mattia Maculan our most sincere congratulations and thanks.

MEN’S SHED The Men’s Shed at the Veneto Club has had a phenomenal year of success in 2023. We started off at the Baracca in March with AFL player & coach Terry Wallace. Terry reflected on the challenges and resilience required in a high-pressure work environment. He reminisced fondly about his time as the Veneto Clubs basketball coach back in the late 1970s. The following few months hosted a broad range of speakers such as Paul Taylor from Mind, Body & Brain Performance Institute, Luke Darcy AFL player and TV Presenter, then Matthew Chum from the Butterfly Foundation. In June, the Mens Shed event changed to a Sunday night in the Sala Venezia to cope with the extraordinary popluar Rex Hunt & Sam Newman Uncensored. Totally unscripted – this event mixed some serious messages with laughter and a light dinner, and certainly got a lot of talk across Melbourne after the event. As the gloom of winter hit Melbourne in July, and the Baracca closed for some much needed repairs, the Mens Shed moved to the Members (Felice’s) Bar to hear Stan the Man Longinidis talk about his career. A suprisingly gentle man given his profession of boxing. The Baracca BBQ sausages were replaced by a warm bowl of pasta. Sal Perna AM and Dr John Tickell followed in the next two months. Then in October due to popular demand Paul Taylor returned and the Mens Shed event was opened up to partners and families to hear his inspirational words. In November 2023 we wound up the year with some laugher that’s always good for the mind and soul – featuring George Kapiniaris and comedian Ash Fils-Aime all the way from USA. Looking forward, we will restart the Mens Shed in March 2024 back at the new look Baracca. Planning is already underway for next years speakers. Thank you to the Veneto Club for supporting this very important Mens Health initiative. Thank you to all the supporters and sponsors who have donated goods for our monthly raffles. “The Veneto Club is proud to support this very important health and wellbeing initiative for the men in our community. Our Men’s Shed has inspired men to seek support, to support their mates and most importantly to talk openly about issues that were previously unspoken – it’s having a positive impact. The diverse range of speakers and topics will appeal to men of all ages and backgrounds. We should encourage the men in our lives to go to one of these events” – Sonya Velo VP Veneto Club

FC BULLEEN LIONS DAVID DEL MONACO

MANAGER & CHAIRMAN, FC BULLEEN LIONS

The 2023 season will go down as one of the most successful in the history of the Club. Success is measured in different ways and the following report shows this through all the different success stories across our great Club. Our Senior Women made Club history this year by becoming the first FCBL senior women’s team to be crowned NPLW premiers (finished first). The women also celebrated a couple of individual milestones with Emily Shields and Alex Natoli both playing their 100th NPLW game for FCBL. Alex Natoli also became the fourth player in Club history to achieve 10 years of service as a senior player. Our U21 men made finals again by finishing third. Our senior men, who had a challenging first half of the season, finished the year strongly in 7th position in a 14-team NPL 2 League. What was really pleasing was the entertaining brand of football played and the amount of game time given to several of our young players. Congratulations to senior men players Luke Lofts, who won both the NPL 2 “Players’ Player” and Golden Boot awards, and Wonsuk Choi who was voted the NPL 2 Goalkeeper of the Year. Emily Shields and Alex Natoli

Our Junior NPL boys were exceptional again this year cementing FCBL’s position as the best junior boy’s Club outside of the A League Academies. This year, it was the U15s, coached by Maurizio Masoni and Sandro Marinucci, that beat the A League teams to win the Division 1 premiership.

FCBL – Under 16 tour of the Veneto Region

Sport Reports

Our NPL Junior Girls had another outstanding year with all three teams, the U13s, U15s and U17s, making the Grand Final of their respective leagues with the U13s and U17s going on to be 2023 champions. The Junior Development Squads and Miniroos teams all enjoyed competitive seasons with the highlights being the performances of our U12 Kangaroos Blue team coached by Phil Cianci and our U12 Girls Kangaroos/Wallabies team coached by Sam Suleman who both finished top of their leagues and went on to win their respective state championships. FCBL has always been proud to be one of only a few inclusive clubs in Victoria that cater for Men, Women, Boys and Girls across NPL and Community/Miniroos leagues. This year we went one better by introducing an All-Abilities team. A massive thank you goes to Dennis Dalla Costa who did a wonderful job managing and coaching this team.

All-Abilities Team

FC Bulleen Lions has access to some of the best facilities in Victoria and for this we thank the Veneto Club Board and General Manager – Joe Morello - for their ongoing support. We also extend our appreciation to all our sponsors who without their support the successful delivery of the football program would not be possible. A big thank you to the “Greater Team”. Starting with the FCBL Committee who provide operational support, the Technical Directors; Karl Hodge, Mark Boyd & Maged Abraham, Coaches, Team Managers, Health Care Specialists, etc. who look after the teams and the many parent volunteers who helped when needed, including those that stepped up with their BBQ skills to support the sausage sizzles.

Junior Girls NPL U13 Champions

Then we have our FCBL Administrator - Michelle Rosa who is doing a great job since taking on the role from Karen Daley. Karen has been the heart and soul of FCBL for over 10 years and to say that Karen has done a phenomenal job as FCBL Administrator would be understating her contribution and value to our Club. As the 2023 football year ends, so does my time as Manager and Chairman of this wonderful Club. I would like to thank the Veneto Club Board for the opportunity as it has been an absolute pleasure. I wish the FCBL Community all the best for the future. Yours in sport.

MATTHEW CAHILL

OPERATIONS MANAGER The tour group departed for Italy the day after the season ended for what promised to be the trip of a lifetime. Our destination was the football paradise of Veronello, a short walk from Lake Garda in Northern Italy. Upon arrival we immediately became immersed in the heart of football culture, surrounded by beautiful scenery, and being welcomed by professional coaches from the International Football Academy of Verona, intermixed with coaches from Padova FC and Virtus Verona FC. The theme of the camp was to Live Like a Pro and our players dove straight into the football program. Training sessions started on day one and by day two the boys played their first match, taking on the team from Virtus Verona and were fortunate enough to come away with a win in warm conditions; ending the day, watching Virtus Verona take on Vicenza under lights in a Serie C derby. On the third day we saw the football momentum continue to build with another game scheduled under lights. This followed a relaxing start to the day taking in lunch on the banks of Lake Garda. Following that, we headed to San Giovanni Lupatoto stadium for our second match where the boys were able to keep up the early tour form and walk away with another win.

In summary, the rich culture of the Veneto region provided an awesome experience above and beyond just football. Our team showed great sportsmanship and improvement on the field while cementing bonds essential for further success in the future. The experiences, friendships, and memories created during this trip will undoubtedly shape the future of these young football players, both on and off the field.

FCBL U16 VENETO ITALY TOUR 2023

Grazie mille, Veneto!

Over the next few days, we ventured out near and far to take in as much of the football and Italian culture as possible. This included trips to Verona, Milan (which included a visit to the San Siro to watch AC Milan play Hellas Verona) and Venice, where the boys were given plenty of down time to explore the iconic canals and a boat trip to Murano to witness the artistry of glassblowing. The football program ended on a high with great training sessions and games against Virtus Verona and Padova. Special thanks go out to Recenti Alessandro and Lorenzo Bedin for the inspirational training sessions they put the team through. A huge thank you must go to our uniform sponsors, (Oxa Care, TMS, Adriatic, Casalingo, Podiatry Plus and ASL), our coaches, Chuck and Karl. Also, a special shout out to Alberto Cattel from IFA Verona, who greatly assisted with the tour planning and oversight.

BOCCE PASQUALE MARINELLI, RICK GATTO, SONYA VELO

More than fifty years on – bocce is still a staple sport at the Club. Our bocce drome may not be filled with huge numbers accustomed to in the 1980’s and 90’s but there is still the roll of the bocce and the clang of the throws in the courts many times during the week. On Wednesday nights, during the warmer months we see several dozen players come along for the weekly competition. Unfortunately this seems to taper off during the colder months. Despite this we have a core of regular players who come along to play bocce followed by a social chat and drink after the games. It’s always an enjoyable evening. We welcome new players of all abilities, and ages. There is a $15 fee for the six-week round of games, after which prizes are awarded for the top game winners. There’s no need to commit to the six-week competition and players are welcome on a week-by-week basis, if they prefer. Pasquale Marinelli and Bruna Rubin coordinate this competition and we thank them for maintaining these games as a regular bocce feature at the Club. Thursday nights #VCBOCCE is now in its fifth year – and continues to be a regular bocce event for a diverse group of participants. It’s a VC grown event which started the evolution of new initiatives to reinvigorate bocce in our community. Held every Thursday fortnight there’s Italian and 80’s disco music, food, drinks, three free raffles and of course two games of bocce. This year federation competition in Victoria has gone through a confronting change. The federation has abandoned the super league competition and the players have opted to play in the A Grade. There has been a noticeable positive lift in spirit in the A Grade competition with the Veneto players joining this group. We welcome Michelle Favrin, Angela Sirianni and Michael Cianci to the Veneto Federated team and hope we all have a successful year. VC Bocce Slam has returned, it’s held during the last weekend of November and is now an annual marquee event on the Australia Bocce calendar. It’s a commemorative tournament to celebrate the 1973 World Doubles Championships being held at the Veneto Club. We are indebted to our loyal and generous sponsors CO.AS.IT, Grollo Ruzenne Foundation and De Bortoli Wines for their support to hold a weekend event of such high calibre. In 2022, the Veneto Club bought home the silver medals with the ladies’ team of Laila Favrin and Sonya Velo.

2023 has been one of great accolades for the Veneto Club Bocce once again. • On Australia Day 2023 the Veneto Club Bocce was invited to Government House to hold a bocce exhibition in the grounds. It was an action-packed day where we were able to promote bocce and all Veneto Club sports to thousands of Melbournians who attended the Open Day. • In July at the AGM for the Victorian Bocce Federation Rick Gatto was awarded Life Membership. Rick has been a tireless contributor to the Veneto Club bocce for many, many years. Whether it’s working with the Special O’s Bocce on Saturdays, coordinating our Federation players for their competitions, making new bocce clocks for our bocce arena, acting as Tournament Director, coordinating the Bocce Team Challenges, or just playing in a competition. Rick has dedicated countless hours to ensuring that the Veneto Club Bocce is held in high esteem in the bocce fraternity. Congratulations to Rick! • At the same AGM, Laila Favrin was elected as the new President of the Bocce Federation of Victoria. The first female president of our State Federation – this is a prestigious achievement for Laila. We hope and know that she will take bocce into the next era of revitalisation with her youth and commitment. Rick Gatto was also appointed as the new BFV Treasurer. • The Veneto Clubs presence and contribution to bocce in Victoria continues to grow and strengthen in the community.

As part of our resolve to grow the sport we have been actively trying new initiatives such as: • Under the guidance of John Inglese (previously BA National Development Manager) the Veneto Club piloted the first three seasons of the Bocce Team Challenge. The BTC comprises modified easier rules and coloured resin balls in an aim to introduce players to the basics in a very casual fun atmosphere. Teams of up to eight players play triples over a six-week period on Friday nights. Our BTCs have attracted upwards of fifty new players to bocce at the Club. Hopefully we can create a pathway to translate into more competition players. The next BTC is scheduled for March 2024, and we look forward to seeing more new faces try this. • We have hosted U3A (University of the 3rd Age) Fun and Exercise with BOCCE courses at the Club during July – August 2023. Participants from U3A from the Manningham & Deepdene districts attended the eight-week program. There were morning & afternoon sessions of bocce which focused on gentle exercise, learning new skills, and hand-eye coordination. The U3A course was run by bocce volunteers John Inglese and Angela Sirianni who together provided lots of laughs and new challenges each week. • Introduction to Bocce in Schools at the grassroots levels is always popular. Recently we have taken bocce to Holy Spirit PS in Thornbury and Watsonia Primary School visited the Club for their celebrations of Italian Day. The future of bocce lies in the youth, our juniors – it’s a priority of both the National and State Bocce organisations – and the Veneto Club. We are fully supportive of providing opportunities for juniors to come and try bocce. On Tuesday nights we have been privileged to have some of Victoria’s elite players donate their time and expertise to introduce bocce to young people. Thank you to Angelo Parisi, Tony Palermo and Dino Mikolich for this. Next year the coaches will be holding a juniors tournament to give them an experience of what competition bocce is like. Bocce is a non-contact sport for boys and girls to play alongside each other equally – it’s the perfect sport for a young person who would like to try something different. There is no cost, and all equipment is provided by the Veneto Club. If you have a young person that may be interested in trying bocce – make contact with the Veneto Club and we can connect you with the junior coaches.

Bocce continued

The Veneto Club had three teams which competed in the NENGT night competition for the Autumn & Spring seasons. The teams play home & away fixtures on a Tuesday night starting from 7pm each week. Whilst there was no silverware won during the two seasons, all teams competed well in their respective sections. Sunday morning Junior Competition saw eight Veneto Club teams compete in the Eastern Region Tennis Association competition with our youngest JDC team winning the Winter Season in their first year. It is great to see the courts filled with junior players on a Sunday morning each week proudly wearing their Veneto Club uniforms. Coaching numbers has increased to over 300 participants per week and holiday programs have become very popular at the Club. The Vida coaching program is continuing to be led by former Davis & Federation Cup Captain of the Philippines Karl Santamaria. Some of our junior players achieved some fantastic results over the last year. Cooper Errey played in the Australian Open juniors and reached the semi-finals of the doubles. Scarlett Dattoli has won many junior (18 and under) events, and has now moved inside the top 700 in the world junior rankings at age 14. The online court booking system has been a great improvement for court bookings and enables more people to access the tennis courts for social play. If you would like to use our online court booking system go to this link https://play.tennis.com.au/venetoclubtennis/court-hire/ book-by-date Looking to next year we look forward to increasing all the tennis playing opportunities at the Club for our members and the local community. GOLF OSCAR FORTE PRESIDENT

Each year the Veneto Club Golf group plays thirteen games between February and November at various suburban golf courses plus a weekend away. The local games are played in Stableford format with prizes awarded to the winners of A and B Grade being the players with the highest scores at the end of the day’s play. The Veneto Club Golf Champion is awarded to the player with the highest aggregate points at the end of each season.

Oscar Forte President, Kevin Aragona and Captain Tony Spadaro

Our year began with a steady membership of thirty-two registered players and all games were well attended with an average participation rate of twenty-three per game. Sponsors are important for the Golf committee as they enable us to provide prizes for each game to the first place and runner-up in each of A and B grades. It is with great pleasure that the Golf committee recognises the support of its loyal sponsors who make all this possible and we would like to acknowledge the following: Gasco Giancarlo & Paola Peruzzo, Osea Bruni, Frank Dal Santo and the Veneto Club via FCBL Manager David Del Monaco. The 2022 Winners were as follows: A Grade – Michael Smout 73.5 points, Runner Up - Oscar Forte 67.5 points, and B Grade – Vince Cirona 64.5 points, Runner Up - Mario Colledan 49.7 points. The Veneto Club Trophy, sponsored by the Veneto Club for 2023 was won by Kevin Aragon one of our youngest members. At the 2023 Golf AGM the following Committee members were elected: President - Oscar Forte, Treasurer - Frank Dal Santo, Secretary - Sauro Antonelli. Captain - Tony Spadaro, Handicapper - John Capicchiano, Subcommittee - David Gauci, Joe Piperno. Whilst the 2022 Golf weekend was cancelled due to the floods in North Eastern Victoria. We were pleased to finally get away this year for three days in late October. Players travelled to Moama, playing at the beautiful Rich River Country Club. The golf format was “Four Ball Best Ball” where teams of four players compete against other teams, and on Monday “closest to the pin”. The annual weekend away was enjoyed by all. Wonderful weather, food and company. A very special thanks to the Veneto Club for their generous sponsorship.

Presidents Cup Winner – Giulio Lunardi at Ringwood Golf Club with President Oscar Forte

The 2023 season has seen a small increase in membership which is pleasing. The annual membership fee is minimal ($50) which now includes automatic inclusion to the raffle and free bottle of water and fruit per player at games. We are always looking for new members and anyone who would like to join us will be very welcome, especially females, as we are looking to boost the number of female players. Not only do we enjoy our golf, but wonderful friendships are forged. If you would like more information about Golf at the Veneto Club – please refer to the contact details below. SQUASH LIBERO DALLA ZUANNA

This year was a promising year for the Veneto Club Squash. On court, we successfully achieved a grand final win as well as observed a significant increase in squash memberships. The year started with the now, annual Golden Lion Competition. A round robin tournament held throughout January and February culminating in the tournaments founding organizer Leon Tellis, meet Lester Green in the final. The hard-fought match was eventually won by Leon. Congratulations to both players on a valiant effort.

Club Circuit Grand Final win

The Winter Season of the Club Circuit saw two teams make the finals and our D3 team winning the Grand Final. The Grand Final was decided in the last game, in front of a great crowd of Veneto Club non-playing spectators – which was pleasing to see such support for the sport. The Spring Season of Club Circuit is well underway, and all four teams are presently in finals. Here’s hoping that we bring home a few flags. It’s encouraging to see the increase in playing numbers – both pennant and social members. Some “retired” members have returned, and some new members have joined us. In June-July 2023 we were able to continue the tradition of the Bert Caneva Veneto Club Squash Championships. The knockout competition finished up with a great game between the defending champion Richard Smaldino and David Truett. It was a long five game match, which saw David come out on top. Well done to all that competed and congratulations to David for coming out on top. David Caneva, representing the Caneva Family, was on hand to present the prizes, and we enjoyed a beautiful celebratory dinner afterwards. A very big thank you to the Caneva family for their continuing support of the Veneto Squash Club over many, many years. We appreciate your support.

First Club Champion, Ron Barbano and current champ (2023), David Truett

The Veneto Squash Club Championships were first held way back in 1978. It was won by founding Squash member Ron Barbano, who beat John Dal Santo. It was great to see Ron at the at the Veneto Club recently – and he is pictured with the current Club Champion David Truett. Along with the rest of the Club we will endure some short-term disruptions, however I am sure that the Veneto Club will continue to be a first class social, cultural, dining and sporting facility. The Squash Committee and our members look forward to a prosperous future. We welcome new players be it social (court hire) or competition players at the Veneto Club. Go Veneto Club / Forza Veneto Squash. For any squash related queries please contact Livero Dalla Zuanna lib@ cadwallfs.com.au or 0403 013 590

VENETO CLUB CHOIR PASQUALE MARINELLI CHOIR COMMITTEE

What a fabulous year it has been for our Veneto Club Choir! As our reputation expands, so do the invitations to perform at festivals, markets, celebrations and aged care homes. Over the last year our highlights have been - singing at the Sagra di San Marco, Mirboo North Festa, Mt Buller Chapel for the annual Alpini pilgrimage, Queen Victoria night market and Preston Market Italian Day, Edge Theatre Federation Square, the Trevisani convention, Hepburn Springs Swiss Italian festa and several Aged Care Homes. Our year of singing now features an annual Choir Dinner in mid-November where the Choir entertains the guests with their latest repertoire of songs whilst they enjoy a lovely dinner in the Sala Venezia. We are very pleased that this event is now a highlight of the Clubs cultural activities each year. We have worked hard to publicize our choir and have had several articles featured in local newspapers and in the Il Globo. These articles serve as great advertising resources for our Choir and more importantly for our Club. This publicity is a very important part of our mission to foster culture through songs. On a sad note, we lost two of our members during the year and we will miss their voices, however on the positive we have gained several others. The latest to join are a father and son team which is pleasing to see the multigenerational appeal of the choir and singing. We thank our young and energetic conductor – Giuliano Di Ienno – for having the patience and expertise to guide us through our new songs. We also thank our Club’s President and his Committee for their continued support. Currently we have just under thirty members of our Choir – but are always looking for more to join us. If you love singing - come and join our friendly and welcoming group. The Choir has regular practice nights at the Club if you are interested – contact us for more information. For any choir related queries please contact Pasquale Marinelli Patritamarinelli@gmail.com or 0410 565 208

LADIES AUXILIARY JOSIE FAGGION, PAOLA GIRARDI & MARINA MANDOULIDIS It is with much pleasure that we look back on another successful year on the hard work and dedication from volunteer groups that focus on activities for the Ladies Auxiliary, Anziani and special events for the ladies of our Club. From the Ladies Auxiliary, there have been many luncheon theme events such as Easter, Mother’s Day, Christmas in July, Father’s Day, the Carciofi Lunch and now we look forward to our last event for the year, the Christmas Party Luncheon on December 14th. So many wonderful Veneto Club patrons and their friends have attended, enjoying meeting up at these functions, dancing to the band that always gets lots of people on the dance floor, and singing along to old Italian favourites. To our wonderful Josie and Dorina thank you for your continuous hard work, from when our members enter the venue, to organising the raffles and prizes and a scrumptious menu. All your efforts are much appreciated, you always go way beyond in making every event a success. To our wonderful sponsors, Trish from Amici (Made in Italy) Clothing, Mauro Bros Meats Tunstall Square and all other generous members and affiliates that support the Club during these amazing lunches – we thank you for your support this year. Our excursions this year have been few, but the best is always the Italian Film Festival which was held on Wednesday 11th October 2023. This year we saw a film called Orlando at the Westgarth Palace Cinema. The group departed from the Veneto Club by bus in the morning returning to savour a delicious lunch in the afternoon in the bistro. Next year we plan to expand our excursions, so make sure you join us - we can guarantee a pleasant enjoyable day of unforgettable exciting moments to be had. For many decades, the Ladies Auxiliary has been renowned for their crostoli and frittole – made in true Veneto style. To ensure this is not lost and continues for generations to come, we have our Frittole and Crostoli cooking initiatives that have been extremely popular with women of all ages. • Frittole classes are held on the first Monday of each month. These classes are well attended. In 2023, we hosted over 200 participants at the classes. By popular demand the frittole classes will return in March 2024. • Crostoli volunteers help make the crostoli each Thursday at the Veneto Club. This is a fun hardworking volunteer group that knead, roll, fry and package crostoli for the VC DELI. The work is accompanied by fun, laughter, and banter – it’s a great social event for the morning, come along, make new friends and learn the art of fine crostoli making. We have dabbled with some new events - the Books (Beer) & Bubbles Nights. Initially focusing on attracting ladies– it seems that even some of our men folk have been keen to attend.

• In February we featured Steve Cappelin. Hailing from Veneto origins Steve wrote a fictional novel Paradiso based on the historical facts of his ancestor’s migration to Australia in the 1800’s. • Then in June we featured the Ascolta Women’s Writing Group. Returning to the Veneto Club to talk about their latest book Stories from La Notte. Exploring superstitions and customs handed down to us from our ancestors it was a great interactive night with the authors and the attendees. We value our heritage and Italian/ Veneto roots. Events like these keep the memories of our migration to Australia, and our customs, superstitions, and culture alive in the next generations. We’re always on the lookout for relevant books for our next event – if you have a suggestion – share it with us! Next year we hope to expand our offerings for the ladies of the Club of all ages with some monthly events focusing on health and wellbeing. If you would like to be part of this new initiative, or the Ladies Auxiliary team please contact the Club by emailing culture@venetoclub.com.

ALPINI

Looking back on the last twelve months, on Sunday 13th November 2022 the Alpini gathered with other Associations to pay tribute, and honour the Italian POW soldiers and internees who died during World War 2. On Sunday 5th February, 2023 a mass was held to honour Italian soldiers that lost their lives in Russia during World War 2, which was followed by lunch at the Veneto Club. Then on Monday 10th April, at the Baracca the Alpini held a barbecue for Pasquetta. It was a feast of food and drink and very well attended by Alpini, friends and supporters of our Alpini association. On one of our most important days of the year – Anzac Day – we held a ceremony afront of our beloved Alpini monument to honour all fallen soldiers. This was followed by a remembrance mass and then the Veneto Clubs spectacular annual Sagra di San Marco. Our Alpini again, continued with the traditional mouthwatering serving of trippa and polenta which was enjoyed by all. We feel very much at home being a part of the Veneto Club and included in the Sagra festivities. Most of the Alpini events are annual celebrations and commemorations and one of the most popular is the annual pilgrimage to Mount Buller which was held on Sunday 7th May 2023. This year was extra special as we celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the construction of our Alpini Chapel. Following the commemorative service, everyone attended the ABOM Hotel in Mount Buller, where we enjoyed a huge appetising lunch with plenty to drink, and plenty of singing! The chapel was constructed over a period of more than 18 months with support from many sectors of Mt Buller, Mansfield, Melbourne communities, the Alpini Association, and Italian ex-service men who all contributed to the build of the chapel. The chapel is an important part of the Mt Buller village as locals attend religious services without going down the mountain; it is said to be the soul of the village. If you would like to find out more about the Alpini Association and our events, please contact us on the numbers listed below. We extend a warm welcome to be part of a group that supports our heritage and traditions, and honouring our veterans, servicemen and forefathers. We especially would like to congratulate the Veneto Club on celebrating its 50th year Anniversary. Tony Lunardi – 0412 998 465 and Eliseo Mattiuzzo – 0425 712 758

ASSOCIAZIONE TREVISANI NEL MONDO GIULIA POLETTA

COMMITTEE MEMBER After the last few years of uncertainty and unpredictability, 2023 saw the return of many events for the Trevisani Nel Mondo Association to the Veneto Club. The Trevisani Nel Mondo Melbourne committee L - R: Louis Crema (Treasurer), Gianpaolo Michelin, Doriana Porto, Mario Magaton (Vice President), Giorgio Paccagnan (President), Annette Parisotto (Secretary), Renata Rostolis, Giuseppe Bolzonello (Vice President), Emilio Luciato, Maria Stocco, Loris Bertuola, Giulia Poletta

The social calendar began with the AGM on the 19th of February. This provided an opportunity for the President, Vice President’s and Secretary of the Association to share with their members the plan for the future, including the announcement of the Convegno to be held in Melbourne for all the Australian branches. Also, in February family and friends gathered at La Baracca to celebrate mass and then the family picnic. With the Melbourne weather being favourable, the space was a perfect venue for the day’s festivities, which included bocce and a jumping castle for the kids. On the 25th of April, together with all the other associations, we commemorated the Sagra di San Marco. The event was very successful, and the Association served meals to many visitors who came out to enjoy the beautiful day. On the 30th of April, The Trevisani celebrated the Castagnata, a lunch dedicated to chestnuts and “vin brulé”, adhering to the traditional winter foods served in Treviso. This too was a great opportunity to get together and enjoy a meal, a drink, dancing and spending time with friends and family. On the 7th of May, a bus full of Trevisani Nel Mondo members made their way to Mount Buller to enjoy a day on the snow. They were luckily graced with snow and the perfect weather for the day excursion, which included lunch and a beautiful day on the mountain.

L - R: Tiziano Piovesan (TNM Treviso), Franco Conte (Presidente Associazione Internazionale TNM), Giorgio Paccagnan (TNM Melbourne President), Fabio Sandonà (Presidente Federazione delle Associazioni Venete del Victoria), Louis Crema (Veneto Club President)

The Radicchio Festa was held at the Veneto Club on the 25th of June, a lunch dedicated to the famous “radicchio trevigiano”. With lunch finishing, many of the members took to the dance floor for a dance and to enjoy some Italian tunes from the band. On the 20th of August, the patron Saint of Treviso, San Pio X, was remembered and celebrated. The day began with the mass at St Clements and followed by our customary lunch in Sala Venezia for members, their families and friends. This was a wonderful day, enjoyed by all. This year has been very eventful for the Trevisani Nel Mondo and for the Veneto Club, and we look forward to an even busier year in 2024!

2023-24 Committee Front row L-R – Gianni Simionato, Lucia Zandegu’, Maria Ferronato, Alessandro Simion. Back row L-R Franco Borella, Claudia Borella, Luigi Bacchin (Presidente) Katia Bacchin, Anna Simion – assenti Mario Todaro e Angelo Reginato

Buller.

Padre Vito e Presidente Luigi Bacchin

Renzo Zanella – renzo@clayforlife.com.au or 0412 150 106

Festa Annuale – Premiati i nostri soci sopra i 90anni

‘Vin brule’ at St Brigid’s Hall

Consulta e Meeting a Vicenza 2023
