Hey guys, Today I am going to start a blog series – Things I should have known. I have created this series to help rookies in the content writing and freelancing business to understand a few things before they start.

This series will take you through my journey as a freelance content writer and I will share some of the things I wish I knew beforehand. So, brace yourselves as we begin. In today’s topic, I am going to talk about the 4 things I should have known before I got into the content writing business. These insights will help people who are thinking of taking a plunge into the content business to understand what lies ahead. Content Writing – An Ocean of Opportunities As we are becoming more and more tech-savvy, the Internet is our answer to everything. We get everything we want with the click of a button and there are websites that are helping us achieve the same. So, how does the internet interact with us? It is through content. The internet is full of content. Some of it is outstanding, some of it is not so outstanding. Some of the content is spam while some of the content is copied. But, the bottom line is that there is a lot of content being shared on the internet. Now, as a content writer, you’re going to be responsible for creating content. What type of content you create depends solely on your skills, your determination and the hard work you put. If done right, you can be a successful writer within a

couple of years. Otherwise, you’ll just end up writing small articles and web page content and make a meager side amount per month. The content writing business will o er you many things. It is up to you to grab these opportunities and make the best out of it. When I rst started o , there were many things that were not known to me. I struggled and learned these things as I progressed, but now I feel that knowing them beforehand would have done me a lot of good. So, here I present you the 4 things you must know before you start a career in content writing.

1. Is Content writing the right thing for you? -Time allotment. It takes time to create content: I stumbled upon content writing during my college days. I was primarily looking for something that could help me make some extra money. That is when I read about content writing for the rst time and decided to give it a shot. However, what I did not realise was the fact that creating content is not as easy as it sounds. It takes time and patience to create good quality content. Right at the start, I struggled with quality and it took me a lot of time to create even small articles. My social life in college was hampered and I missed out on a lot of fun. Even my studies were a ected and there was a time when I was under a lot of stress. So, my rst advice to anyone who is thinking about becoming a serious content writer is, please understand that this is going to take time. You must be ready to commit a large portion of your day to content writing. In the start, the pay will be small and the workload will be high. It is very important to understand all this before diving in as otherwise, you can end up getting frustrated and stressed like I was. Now that I have successfully mastered the art of time allotment, it has become a lot easier and faster. So, it will eventually fall in place, just be patient.

2. Skill development. Content creation is more than just writing. Many people enter this eld thinking that we have a command over English so writing content won’t be a trouble. Even though command over a certain language in most cases English, is the foremost requirement, there is a lot more to the picture. First of all, the way you write has to be adjusted to the type of audience. You cannot market a product if the content sounds like a lecture rather than a sales pitch. Similarly, academic writing needs to be professional and proper referencing is needed.

Second, Plagiarism is a big NO. I didn’t have any idea about plagiarism at the start and though I did not exactly copy paste anything, some of the content I wrote for other sites would come as plagiarized because I ended up writing more or less using the same language. The third point would be to understand what type of content you’re good at writing before you actually start. The basic skills of English will come in handy but in order to be a successful content creator, you need to be able to connect with the audience with your style of writing. I normally leave the technical part of the skills to the last for it is something one learns over the time. I am sure you must have heard about terms related like SEO, Keywords, Metadata and so on. Understanding and following the above three points would help you grasp all of these technical terms in a ji y, so to say if the rst 3 points in the skills are covered, technical knowledge would come like a breeze. What is important is to know where to get this knowledge from once you reach to this level. Here are a few pros that I follow: Neil Patel’s Quicksprout, BloggerSidekick, CopyBlogger.

3. Finding a source of earning. Source of Work. Well, when I rst read about content writing, I jumped right into the rst site I saw. The rst ever site I chose was www.freelancer.in. However, it was a mistake because this website has over 10 million users. The competition here

is erce and getting a job is very tough. I struggled for about a couple of months before I stumbled upon www.worknhire.com and that is when I got my rst proper client. With time, I got to know about the power of LinkedIn and Facebook in connecting clients to writers. My highest paying gigs came from these sites and I really feel that I should have known about it from the start in order to get a better start to my writing career. There are many other sources from where you can get writing jobs. But, my personal favorite is LinkedIn. Once you’ve got the hang of things, you can easily connect with potential clients and make good money using these portals. I will elaborate this point further in another article where I will talk in detail about the various sources of work and how you can approach them.

4. Make your interests your strong point. Writing Niche: At the start, any work is good work. Usually, fresh freelance writers take up writing gigs on any topic. However, I consider it a wrong step. In the early days, there was a time when I used to write about fashion. I was not particularly interested in the niche and that is why there came a time when I actually got bored of the work and nearly decided to quit.

At the start, you might not have too many choices, but my suggestion will be to identify the niche that you’re interested in. I nally realized my love for marketing and analytics and have since mainly worked on projects that have something to do with either content marketing or analytics. My love for the content I create keeps me hooked and this is what makes me happy as a freelance writer today. Even more so, my knowledge expands with each researched article I write. I don’t necessarily have to research extensively on topics I am asked to write on and content creation becomes faster and interesting. So, develop your niche as soon as you can and enjoy your journey even more. Now that I have told you these 4 things, I hope that the budding writers will take heed and proceed accordingly. If you have any queries regarding this content, please feel free to ask. I also welcome your suggestions to improve this content even further so that the readers can bene t as much as possible.
