Comments – this is something more commonly seen on social media like Facebook, LinkedIn etc. Comments are peoples’ method of telling you what they think about content that you’ve posted, a link that you’ve shared, an image that you’ve shared or any other activity that was shared by you online. Comments, however, have never been treated seriously. This is true for almost all the new content creators and bloggers out there. In the initial days of my writing, I never gave the due importance to comments that were needed. Instead, comments remained one of the most neglected areas in my content creation work ow. However, I realized that this was dangerous because of 2 main reasons: 1. No comments on your blog posts mean that either people are not reading what you’ve shared, or it means that your content is not good enough to incite a response from the reader. 2. Comments have the capacity to improve your search metrics and actually bring in more web tra c. Now, the rst point is self-explanatory and must have been understood. The second point, however, needs some more explaining. So, in the next section, I am going to tell you how exactly comments are known to bring web tra c.

How comments bring in more people? Comments on your blog posts mean that people are eager to share their ideas with you. Of course, most of the comments might just be ‘thanks for sharing’ and ‘it was a good read’, there are comments from experts in your domain which might actually help you in driving more tra c. In a recent study by Quick Sprout, a rm based on content marketing, it was revealed that keywords appearing in the content make their presence known on Google search. The gist of their study showed that about 14-16% of the total visitors coming to their site was due to the keywords appearing in the comments section. This proves that, even though it is not lucrative, comments on your blog do contribute to your web tra c and having no comments or very few comments means that you’re losing out on that tra c.

Figure 1 – How Comments generate keywords and Web Tra c Now that you know how comments are important and can add to your web tra c, let us talk about the real issue – generating comments.

5 Practices which can help you generate comments in your next blog post Comments are something that you don’t have a direct power on. You cannot make people comment on your blog. However, you can incite them or encourage them to do so. I have listed some ways, which are known to incite comment generation from the readers and helps in having healthy conversations on your blog posts.

Content must be insightful: The rst way of encouraging comments is to give something worth commenting. Your content is what drives comments. If you write mind boggling content, people are more likely to give you their feedback. They may even put up questions or debate with you on the given topic. So, the rst and foremost step is to ensure that your content contains something insightful for the readers.

Encourage Idea sharing: Do not write your content in a lecturing manner, unless it is academic content. Blog content must have a conversational tone. By maintaining such a tone, the author is able to connect with the readers. So, what you should try to do is to write in a way that it seems like you’re in a one-on-one conversation with the readers. This will encourage idea sharing on the part of the readers and they will be more involved with you. Another way of encouraging idea sharing is to ask relevant questions during the course of your content. These questions will incite responses from the readers and that will be re ected in the comments section.

Figure 2 – Ideas shared by the readers can lead to new content, which will consequently help in generating new ideas

Take a Stance:

By take a stance, I mean, stand for what you believe in. While writing this article, I believe that comments are important and can help improvethe web tra c. While there will be many who disagree, I would maintain my stance on the subject and invite a healthy debate on the same. So, by taking a stance on the subject you’re writing about, you can have healthy debates on the topic. These debates can even give you more ideas about what to write next and also help you learn from the experiences of the other people who are reading your article.

Respond to comments: Responding is very important. There is no point for people to comment on your blog if you never reply to their comments. While responding to comments like ‘the post was good’, ‘you have written it well, thanks for the share’ and so on can be skipped, but answering the comments which put up a question or an opinion on the matter is very important. Not replying to the comments makes the readers feel insulted and discourages them from further commenting on any of your content. Also, maintain your cool while you respond. Taking digs at someone and resorting to hateful words will only tarnish your reputation and incur losses to your business.

Share on Social Media: This is another important way of generating a dialogue, but not necessarily on the blog post itself. By social media marketing services, you can reach a wider audience. Interacting with people on the social networks establishes your trustworthiness and authenticity. When people notice that you are actively engaging with your audience, they start trusting you and your content even more. Also, people who are impressed by your dialogues will share the links to your content within their own networks. This will bring additional web tra c to your website. Now that you know how to generate comments on your posts, let’s talk about the next step – managing the comments. It is indeed true that all comments are not worth your time and e orts.

Managing Comments Moreover, there are many spammers who will spam your comment box with crap. The presence of such comments on your blog ruins your reputation and must be monitored at all times. I am sharing a few simple monitoring steps that will keep most of the crap away from your blog. These practices are important and will become even more relevant when your blog tra c and number of comments increase.

Moderate your comments The rst method is to have comment moderation. All the comments must pass through you or someone from your team before being published. This keeps the comments containing cuss words, trolls and irrelevant content out from your system. However, make sure that you do not reject comments containing healthy criticism as such type of censorship is not professional.

Direct reader’s questions towards your Forum

I think the insight and topics you come up with going through your Forums is invaluable. The perfect heading, your open mic trials, the real questions. All of this and the keyword strength would provide your website with greater value.

Use a Comment Policy Now, this might not be required right at the start. But, bigger platforms like Hu ngton Post have their own policies regarding comments. These policies dictate the way a person must comment on the platform for their comment to be successfully published. Having a comment policy ensures that people know that you will not take any shit and are very serious about keeping the comments section healthy and productive for both parties.

Spam Filters Spam lters are very common. These widgets can be added to your blog so that most of the spam comments are ltered even before they enter your inbox for moderation. It is very important to use these lters as moderating each and every comment, spam or otherwise, would become a time-consuming task. So, if the spam comments are taken care of, it makes the task easier for you or your team. So, use these basic steps in order to create a positive commenting environment around your blog. Be pro-active, participate in debates that ensue, be respectful of the readers and have a positive attitude to make sure that you can reap all the bene ts of comments. And while you’re at it, these valuable comments will bring in web tra c and help in making your blog successful. Do you feel that I missed out on something?
