Message from the President

Awarm Welcome to the 57thAnniversary of the Sampaguita Ball! We are here to celebrate the magical spirit of Christmas that represents kindness, giving and love for one another. We also hope to capture, inspire and instill the boundless values and beauty of our Filipino culture and tradition through our fellowship and program tonight. Our culture is a big part of who we are and being far awayfrom home, we need to put much effort into preserving it. Being here tonight with our family and friends is an opportunity to help keep our culture alive.

We will be presenting for the first time in our Sampaguita Ball event, a Fashion Drama Walk themed after Princess Urduja, a warrior Queen of Pangasinan in the 13th century who led her soldiers tothe battlefields. She was known for saying,”I will marry only the man who can defeat me. My husband must be braver, stronger, and wiser than myself.” No one qualified, so she remained unmarried all her life. While many researchers argued that she never existed, many Filipinos believed she was a national heroine. Do you think she was only a myth?

As we celebrate, let us remember those who are far away, the ones we lost, the ones facing challenging times and could not be with us.

It is a pleasure to see you all!

May your heart be filled with joy and praise for the message of hope and salvation that Jesus brings to our lives. Have a Blessed Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!

Sincerely yours,

14 December, 2024

A heartfelt thank you to all of you for being here tonight and to the donors of our Sampaguita Ball Souvenir Program. Your presence here and the unwavering support of this program helps usmakethisspecial event and other annual events ofthe FilipinoAssociationofToledopossible for years to come.

On behalf of SCORE, The Special Commission on Relief and Education of the Filipino Association of Toledo, I welcome you to this year’s Sampanguita Ball, our celebration of the Christmas and New Year’s Holiday Season. Please eat, drink, and be merry and use this opportunity to catch up and renew old relationships and to endeavor to create new friendships.

32yearsago,inJuly1992,severalmembersoftheFilipinoAssociationofToledo,gottogether and officially formed the Special Commission on Relief and Education to be its charitable arm. Its mission has been to promote, organize, and support medical missions to areas anywhereonEarthinneedandtopromoteeducationbyinstructinglocalhealthworkersduring manyofourmedicalmissionsandthroughtheprovisionofacademicscholarshipstodeserving young men and women. Tonight we will be awarding an academic scholarships to two deserving young collegiates. This past year we have supported multiple medical missions to the Ukraine, Guatemala and Honduras. The Paat family, with support from SCORE and many of our local providers in conjunction with doctors, nurses and students from the University of Santo Tomas planned a legacy mission to Ilocos Sur, Philippines. In addition to a very extensive medical mission, they also supported construction/reconstruction projects at a school there and provided several college scholarships, all in the memory of Antonio and Teodora Paat. Earlier this Fall, Dr. Paat took a small team of volunteers down to the Tampa Bay region to provide disaster relief after Hurricane Helene only to be stuck and have to ride out Hurricane Milton.

Planning is underway for another trip to Ukraine, if the military situation allows. There are also plans for scheduled missions back to Honduras and Guatemala in the coming year. Preliminary plans are beingmadeto do another missionto the Philippines, in conjunction with the University of Santo Tomas. The location and dates for that mission are yet to be determined.

HappyHolidaysandtheBlessingsofChrist’sBirthdayonyouand yours,

More of the Founding Fathers of SCORE have gone to join Jesus during this past year. Many of those currently serving on the Board of Directors of SCORE are the children of its founders and several of these have served for most of their adult lives. We also have two members who are recent immigrants from the Philippines. Four years ago, there were 18 people serving on our Board. We are now down to 12 members. Our number has dwindled. We are in need of new younger members who wish to serve. If you have time and/or talent and wish to serve the Lord and make the world a better place, I invite you to volunteer to serve on our board or to help serve on any of our missions.

Lumen Prayer Circle extends its Thank You for your support to the Back-to-School Project and its best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Lumen is a prayer group of six women animated by the desire to deepen their relationship with the Lord whilst contemplating on ways to go to the margins. This desire led to small acts of solidarity especially with poor school children, primarily those in Indigenous People’s communities through its Back-to-School-Project (BTS)
