Good evening & Welcome!!

Celebrating theChristmasSeasonandthe55thAnniversary oftheSampaguitaBall is theperfect time to reflect theyear’s blessings. Wecan allagreethat thelast 2 years had been difficult. But therearealways blessings to befound. Whether it may bein the comfort that God gives during the hard times or thegood times. I thank God for every person heretonight for the blessing of your presence. Being hereis ademonstration that no matter what wearethrown at wecontinue to gather, support each other, and praiseour Lord Jesus.

This party is acelebration of theblessings to come.So let us makeit an evening of joy, laughter, fellowship, and dancing like nobody is watching.

But beforewedo, let us remember the several founding members of our association who had gonebeforeus.

Dr. Tony Paat, Dr. Ed & Thelma Shea, Dr. Tess Palma Gil, and Marucha Tan were all instrumental in starting the Filipino Association of Toledo and its longevity. They were dedicated to the causeof maintaining and propagating our cultural heritage to the succeeding generations. They served on theBoard to thenear end of their lives providing us with guidance and advice. They will betruly missed.

Please join mein a moment of silencepraying for them and for theothers who wehold dear to our hearts as they watch and celebratewith us from theheaven above.

For all of you I pray for your continued blessings in theyears to come. I pray for healing where healing is needed, for provision where provision is needed. I ask that we honor Christ and celebrate His birth more than it celebrates our own accomplishments, because no accomplishments arepossiblewithout His blessing.

On behalf of the Special Commission on Relief and Education (SCORE), I welcome you to the 2022 Sampaguita Ball. Over the years, this annual event has been the one time that multiple generations of the Filipinos of Northwest Ohio and their friends and families come together to celebrate not only the Holidays but also to celebrate that unique and beautiful culture which Filipinos have brought with them to America. Due to the pandemic, this is the first time for this celebration since 2019. What happened in 2020 and 2021? It is with joy that we come together on this night, and it is with sadness that we remember those we have lost.

Throughout the pandemic, SCORE has continued our mission. For one and a half years, we were unable to run any of our overseas medical missions due to international travel restrictions. However, donations continued to come in and, until this year, our investments were growing well. Funds that would normally have been used to support the overseas medical missions were used locally, to help support Food Banks and Shelters. We provided financial support to the Cherry Street Mission and to two major food banks. We provided essential personal items to other Toledo shelters. Even though the Sampaguita Balls were cancelled, we continued to provide educational scholarships by mailing the checks to two worthy recipients each year. Now, in 2022, the urgency of the pandemic has been supplanted by the urgency and the horrors of the war in the Ukraine. Dr. Richard Paat has three separate medical missions to the Ukraine. These were greatly supported by tens of thousands of dollars, donated specifically in support of the Ukrainian people as well as with funds from SCORE. Additionally, this year, Dr. Paat has been able to resume his routine medical missions to Honduras and Guatemala.Standing on the shoulders of Drs. Antonio Paat and Andy Torres , among others, we, the Board of SCORE, continue to be the stewards of your generosity, by looking ahead to many more years of supporting disaster relief, medical missions to the needy of the world, and educational needs at home and abroad.
