AMBASSADOR

«The love for our respective land, the spiritual outlook of the people and the quest for freedom unites us»

“Undoubtedly, Ukraine is a beautiful country. Its people and the geography make it more appealing. Your trust in democracy and the determination I see in the people to practice it, is always a motivation”. – say Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of India in Ukraine, H.E. Mr. Partha Satpathy. Mister Ambassador, please tell us about the beginning of cooperation between our states that had been started after 1991, since Ukraine gained independence and what were the first steps at this collaboration? Indians and Ukrainians have shared a cultural affinity since several centuries. The similarities between Ukrainian and Sanskrit languages is a prime example to show the historical closeness of our two peoples. The warmth and closeness in our ties has only strengthened since Ukraine’s independence in 1991 – India was one of the earliest countries that recognized the Republic of Ukraine as a sovereign independent country, and established diplomatic relations as early as January 1992. On the other hand, Ukraine opened its first Mission in Asia (and then third largest Ukrainian Embassy in the world) in New Delhi in February 1993. The First President of Ukraine, Mr. L.M. Kravchuk visited India in March, 1992, which was followed by a visit from President of India, Shri S.D. Sharma in July, 1993.

What are the main areas of bilateral cooperation between Kiev and Delhi at this stage? Is it possible to say that both parties use the potential of economic, political and humanitarian cooperation in full? Why? I believe in the indestructibility of energy. The potential energy in our relations needs to

be transferred into kinetic energy through new and exciting projects, and I am happy to tell you that these are actively being considered, such as in the Renewable Energy sector, Information Technology sphere, e-governance projects by the Ukrainian government, etc. Indo-Ukrainian cooperation is multi-sectorial and dynamic, and we have strong and mutually beneficial engagements in all aspects – Political, Commercial, Health, Defense, Education, Energy, Agriculture, Space, Cultural, etc. Bilateral trade between the two countries was over USD 2.8 billion in 2018, with $2.2 billion of exports from Ukraine to India. India is Ukraine’s largest export destination in the Asia and Pacific and the fifth largest overall Export destination. We have recently had high level interactions between the leaderships of the two countries. Indian culture- be no matter what is it yoga, dance forms, Bollywood, Indian cuisine, etc. are hugely popular in Ukraine. Since the Soviet times, Ukraine boasted of credible higher educational institutions of learning in sciences, medicines, engineering etc. This expertise of Ukraine and the familiarity for Indians has motivated Indian students to come to Ukraine for higher studies and this trend continues till today. A large number of students study in Ukraine, particularly in medicine. This is an exciting sphere of cooperation but it needs to be continued and ateention should be focuesd by the Ukrainian authorities towards upgradation of their own educational institutions. #18, January 2020

AMBASSADOR

The question may be changed a little to: Ukraine and India have much to offer each other in economic, in scientific and in technical fields. Are there any such specific projects involving both countries? India and Ukraine share many convergences in scientific and technical spheres. Both countries are diversifying their energy sources, with a particular emphasis on increasing the share of renewable energy- Hydel, Solar, Wind, etc. Both have significant share of nuclear energy in their power mix, and hence, we have strong cooperation in Energy sector with significant prospects for the future as well. In the technical sphere, we have several joint R&D projects in the areas of Biotechnology and Biomedical, Information and Communication Technologies, Nanotechnologies and New Materials, Energy and Energy Resources, High Energy Physics and Astrophysics, etc. Both sides have identified future plan of cooperation in the field of Metals & Material Sciences, Computational Science, earth and Environmental Sciences, Aerospace engineering, Biological sciences, etc. Rightly said, the Indian space program is growing in its ambitions, and is a remarkable example of India’s Scientific and Research

10

#18, January 2020

potential. As you know, our competency lies not only in our technical expertise but the ability to do it in a highly cost effective manner. We have the record of launching the most satellites, simultaneously on a single rocket. This month itself, we launched many satellites, coordinated through ANTRIX, which provides launch services for customer satellites from different countries. With Mangalyaan-the Mars Orbiter Mission, India became the first country to reach outer Mars orbit in its first attempt. We plan to launch manned space mission ‘Gaganyaan’ by December, 2021 and to carry out a mission to Sun ‘Aditya L1 Mission’ by 2020. Ukraine and India have a significant collaboration in the field of space, with an agreement on Cooperation in the Exploration and use of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes. On the foundation laid by the agreement, we have an ongoing program of cooperation, as well as regular contacts between the national space organizations.

Speaking of political co-operation one cannot but mention certain stagnation in our bilateral relations. What is its cause? Do you generally agree that such stagnation occurs? You should not confuse a spring thaw with a winter freeze. There are seasons of the year

AMBASSADOR

and bilateral relations also go through these seasons of change, each has positives and and negatives issues. I don’t perceive a stagnation in our bilateral cooperation. There have been regular high level visits and interactions between our countries, and as elaborated earlier, we have a growing multidimensional cooperation. Moreover, India, being the largest democracy in the World, and Ukraine, one of the largest democracies in Europe, we understand each other well, and have significant political convergences. We have recently held elections in the both countries, and the people have given an overwhelming mandate to Prime Minister Modi in India and President Zelensky in Ukraine. The two leaders exchanged views on bilateral cooperation. This was reinforced when the Foreign Ministers of our two countries met on the sidelines of UNGA. This, undoubtedly, reflects active participation and a shared outlook between the leadership to further strengthen all pillars of bilateral cooperation. On this strong foundation, I am very excited about the future prospects of our relationship as well.

You started your activity in Ukraine relatively recently. What were your first impressions of Ukraine and the

Ukrainians? What did impress you most of all? Undoubtedly, Ukraine is a beautiful country. Its people and the geography make it more appealing. Your trust in democracy and the determination I see in the people to practice it, is always a motivation. The country is enormously literate, the freedoms you practice, I am sure, are envied by many parts of the world. The responsibility this entails needs to be realized by the people as well. What strikes me most is that despite being thousands of kilometers apart, with differences in appearances, we share similarities in our soul. The love for our respective land, the spiritual outlook of the people and the quest for freedom unites us. In the Orthodox churches, the chanting is very reminiscent of the ceremonies in an Indian temple. Even the fragrance of incense is similar. When you observe deeply, you realize the striking similarities between our people. Each season in Ukraine is distinct, so too is the geography of its different regions, and to the explorer in me, which we diplomats often are, this is always an exciting adventure and a challenge. I look forward to my stint with enthusiasm. The conversation was held by Anna Avramenko #18, January 2020

BUSINESS IN UKRAINE

The content of the world today is very oversaturated. It includes TV channels, radio stations, print media, online publications, YouTube, social networks and all these carriers broadcast different information every second, bring a certain message, promote goods or services…. But information is not always true. How to filter information and how to distinguish fake news from real news – says Elena Rudyk, CEO of NASH TV channel, exclusively for FD. TV channel NASH is quite young, but it has already showed a positive development. What is the key to the rapid growth of viewership?

NASH is more than a TV channel; it is an information media platform. The uniqueness of the concept is that the viewer receives information quickly and in a convenient way for him or her – on TV, via the Internet on the site, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages, on YouTube and Telegram channels. Our driving force is the people that work here, their professionalism, knowledge, creativity and faith. Each team has extensive experience in information television; each team clearly knows the area of responsibility and is does its best.

At your channel only the news forms content up. How do you filter the news? How do you distinguish fakes from true information? Content is the editorial board area of responsibilities. Editors and analysts have access to various sources of information. Each news item has been carefully reviewed and analyzed before it is released and published. Indeed, the problem today is the large number of the fake news in the informational space. The reason lies in the fact that in the modern world, everyone can freely write a post on Facebook, independently capture, edit and upload videos, post screenshots of private correspondence, etc. Recognizing of the false information is a professional skill that the editors of NASH TV do have.

Please tell us about the technological component of your studio. After all, is it the most modern in Ukraine because of its equipment, it is not? NASH TV technological complex is built and equipped in accordance with world standards of media and journalism. NASH consists of 5 live studio venues, talk show studio and newsroom that are integrated into a single space.

BUSINESS IN UKRAINE

Through the use of high-tech equipment, NASH was the first to use augmented reality technology on television in Ukraine. This allows us to conduct live interviews in our studio with the most interesting people even so they are in other part of the world.

By what criteria do you select TV presenters for our TV channel? The specifics of our channel are linked with the constant live work. Broadcasts are conducted both from our studios and from venues (rallies, courtrooms, press conferences, etc.). Therefore, the presenter should be welleducated, smart, friendly, resourceful, and stress-resistant, should be able to establish contacts, hold the attention of viewers and listeners and promptly respond to the rapid change of events. Often our presenters have to improvise, because there can be no second to take live.

You have been in the media business for over 10 years. Now you run NASH TV channel. How much does this work inspire you? I am a financier by education. I have successful experience in the financial sector of large companies. But 13 years ago, the fate had driven me to television.

18

#18, January 2020

Working in the media attracts me with my energy and dynamic lifestyle. I am constantly at the center of the flow of information and creative people. I am inspired by the guests who are nice and helpful to interact with. As I like to say, “Television is magic, if once life had driven you here – there is no turning back.”

How many people are under your direct control because the television channel is a complex structure to manage? NASH has been working 24/7. A live TV channel is a living organism, each organ department of which operates clearly and coherently. If at least one element fails, all other systems are activated to overcome the problem as soon as possible. The team of more than 350 people is important for understanding, mutual respect and mutual support. Coordinate so many people is a difficult and responsible task. You must keep in mind that you do work with people. Each of them is unique and talented, it is necessary just to find the right approach for the full potential reaching. I was very lucky with the team. I have been working with professionals for many years. Together, we create large-scale projects and achieve our goals in a short time.

BUSINESS IN UKRAINE Do you have a tight work schedule, so is there at least some spare time? Tell us how do you spend it? Frankly saying, there is not much free time, so I try to spend it on things that I really love and that I enjoy so much. And these things are sports, traveling, meeting with loved ones and friends. I also like to explore new cities and countries. I even have a rule: “Each city has one visit.” After all, the world is so different and interesting, and time is always short.

Do you follow Ukrainian fashion? Who is your favorite Ukrainian designer? I sincerely admire the work of talented Ukrainian designers. My wardrobe is made up mostly of things from Ukrainian brands. The blend of European restraint and oriental luxury, as well as the ability to convey exquisite beauty has helped to create a “recognizable Ukrainian style”. I love Ukraine and everything Ukrainian. I am very impressed with the style of brands such as The BODY wear and Sayya. And I am really crazy about the beautiful shoes from MARSALA.

One of your passion hobbies is golf. What achievements do you have in this sport? Golf has been my pleasure and hobby for over 8 years. I started playing golf at the time when this sport was not so popular in Ukraine. My special accomplishments winning many tournaments, including the Mercedes Trophy and the BMW Golf Cup. Today, I am an advisor to the president of the National All-Ukrainian Golf Federation for the development of the ladies golf. I often participate in competitions abroad and see the level of development of the golf industry, which I want to achieve in Ukraine. So, 4 years later, the idea of creating a ladies golf tournament came up. In fact, these are sports competitions that are held by all rules. The only difference is that the ladies have a more beautiful appearance.

You are promoting women’s golf in Ukraine and hosting the Open Ladies Golf Tour that lasts throughout the season. Please tell us about the main achievements of this extraordinary tournament.

The main goal of OPEN LADIES GOLF TOUR is to promote golf among women in Ukraine. The tour covers a series of competitions that take place every month from March till September. There is a winner at every stage, but the grand prize and the Cup are played in the finals. This year the ladies tournament has attracted more than 100 newcomers within the Golf School. Open to all, the Open Ladies Golf Tour brings together golfers, gentlemen and ladies, juniors and adults, beginners and professionals alike. The families do play golf at our competitions. Last season, 74 shegolfers took part in the competition. Therefore, when after every season we see significant changes in the Ukrainian golf world as more and more ladies join the game and for us, the organizers, this is the biggest achievement. Overall, the plans are to go international, so 2020 will be a very bus year.

Could you share your plans for the next year? Our plan is to go forward! NASH TV team has built the powerful media platform. NASH has become the most innovative television channel in Europe. There are new projects ahead that will help unlock all the hightech capabilities of our studios. Also, there will be a rebranding of the TV channel and program updates, as ours are out of place. The team has been constantly working to create interesting content for our viewers, listeners and readers. Visit the TV channel and you will find that in the “information shop” work has been working all the time.

What do you want to wish for the Ukrainian media? I want to with creativity and inspiration, because in the sphere of media, there is nothing you can do without it. And also, I wish patience and continuous improvement. I want that the sincere words of the media to serve for the affirmation of goodness and justice. I want that all-Ukrainian media will give young professionals a way, give them a chance to grow professionally, to open up their talents and to get the opportunities. The new non-standard approach of young people and the rich experience of professionals in tandem can create the gorgeous stuff, even the new reality. REGIONAL VECTOR “A good master is one who cares not only for himself, but he is one who is also responsible for the land you cultivate and for the crane in which you live“

20

In the triangle “state – business – village” everyone has to trust each other. How could we make the smallest and most important unit of this triangle (the village) “to live”? And can Ukraine be considered a powerful agro-industrial state? Today we are talking with Vasyl Kyrychenko, a person who is recognized at the state level for making a significant personal contribution to the organization and ensuring the highest performance in agricultural production, CEO of the agricultural company Svitoch LTD. What does home land mean for you as for an agricultural worker? What exactly do you put into this word? The Ukrainian land, on which more than one generation of farmers grew up, paved the historical path of development of industrial relations on it. Only the land can feel every word you trust, all the bitterness of life, all your sadness and sorrow, all anxiety, disappointment and anger, at the same time allows you to be cleansed of evil and unjust thoughts and feelings that comes in an hour of spiritual confusion, and thus by strengthening the self-defense reflexes, finding the right way to continue to live and create. You are most aware of and understand this when more than ten years of life and work remain on the blessed Ukrainian land in the past. I believe that land should be an object of work, not speculation. It is good that there are people in Poltava who can appreciate and multiply glorious traditions. People that do their work tirelessly, not with the noise and with the destruction of monuments, people that love their land, their country. I am convinced that the policy of the state should be determined by the people of labor in all fields: industry, agriculture, medicine, education... They are shaping the present and the future. They should be appreciated, respected, thanked and listened to when making responsible decisions. They should take care of them and ask them in which direction the state should move. I want to be one of those who works, creates wealth, pays taxes. We need to build a prosperous, rich Ukraine by ourselves.

What is the current state of the Ukrainian agricultural sector? How does it respond to the challenges of today? We see that the world has been changing as well as the market conditions themselves, we see the changes in the technology at the agricultural business, and we see that the generations have been changing. The business does respond to these changes. We are now focusing on openness in communication, intergenerational interaction. Agricultural businesses are considered traditionally conservative with a rigid hierarchy. But the agricultural sector is changing with the world,

REGIONAL VECTOR

understanding that to manage change and to create solutions products and solutions is impossible without a space where value is shown by the professional talents and interests of people who are simply interested in working. If we think about the consequences of our reform of land relations, we are clearly in a hurry to cut the land into shreds. We must put our hand on our heart and acknowledge our mistakes sincerely. Ukraine had perhaps the best land and agriculture systems and village administrative system. We have unique land resources! The land should be the object of income from its labor, not the object of speculation. By transferring the land into private property, we did not increase the motivational work on it. “There is no one to work in the fields”, “everyone has gone abroad”, “there are no qualified specialists in the countryside” – these theses are heard daily at various business meetings. Another hundred years ago, about 80% of the population lived in Ukrainian villages. Today, the situation has changed dramatically – the number of rural residents is steadily declining. And it is not just urbanization that is gaining ground. More than a dozen villages disappear from the map of Ukraine every year. Most of the time, the village is left by able-bodied youth in search of work and a better life. There is almost no development

22

#18, January 2020

of rural infrastructure; a number of economic, social and environmental problems are forcing people to leave their homes forever.

As the CEO of a powerful agrarian enterprise, how do you solve the HR problem? As the CEO, I am trying to improve this situation, because the production facilities of my enterprise are located in rural areas. It is important for us to model the career paths of young people and help them make informed choices. Now, not much attention is paid to the choice of professions and even less to the promotion of agrarian specialties. Our educational system does not take into account career guidance. That is why we have partially taken over this function in the region where we work. We, as agribusinesses, have to change the image of agriculture-related professions on our own, to show how technological and in demand they are today. You need to change your attitude to living and working in the village. The proof that this can be promising and profitable is the development and organization of our Svitoch Company. But the stereotype that there is no high-paying and promising job for rural youth still works. Although, the overall infrastructure in rural areas often does not meet the current standards that attract the young professionals.

REGIONAL VECTOR

That is why our company joins in creating of a new, more attractive one image of the rural area. We help for the communities to develop the social infrastructure: schools, kindergartens, recreation facilities and playgrounds. We are also involved in large-scale things such as the laying of the water pipes and the repairing of the roads. Formal employment and competitive salary are those things that must be. But in equal importance is the environment in which our employees live and work. Whilst investing in the development of production, we simultaneously care for the rationality and comfort of space – both of the domestic, of the industrial or office one. I mean the modern equipped workplace, sanitary and hygienic conditions and safety, food for workers in the production facilities and health care, of course. Together with my wife Tatiana Yaroslavivna, we started the competition named as My Village: Steps to Development. Thus we have been supporting and have been retaining youth in the province. A person should work where he or she lives. In addition to decent pay, I do my best to keep up the high cultural and educational vector.

From whom did you inherit such a persistent nature and willpower? My parents always lived only for their own work. My mother was a respected teacher,

and my father was a leading combiner. In due time, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine personally presented the Order for the good farmering for him. My father’s genes won – I got an agricultural education. We did not live well, but my family raised me not in stinginess. I do not have any complains about my life – everything is as it should be. But since then, mother’s compassion and care for the unhappy people have been formed, paternal empathy and assistance for the poor ones, and grandfather’s love for children. And it’s has rooted down so deeply my heart that I want to create good conditions for all people I work with. And although not all of them are grateful for this, not all of them can be brought up or re-educated, I have never regretted that I treated them in paternal way. Who knows how to appreciate – would do it. I am a peasant myself, I work on the land and cherish it, but in my opinion, the greatest wealth of the state is the people and the land, to protect them is a sacred duty. After all, the attitude of the state to the peasant was unfair, and even now, when calculating pensions, it remains so. I have lived my life through honestly and I’m not afraid to speak the truth. And, you know, I value every minute so as not to waste, having time to do what is planned and to keep myself in tune. The conversation was held by Anna Avramenko #18, January 2020

WHO ARE YOU, MRS. SHEPTYTSKA?

Promotion of Ukraine, its international recognition, attitude of foreign partners to Ukraine and to our development are among the most pressing issues today. About philanthropists that influence upon the development of the image of our country abroad with the help of “people’s diplomacy” tells Snizhana Sheptytska, a member of the Notary Chamber of Ukraine, a successful notary public and philanthropist. Mrs. Snizhana, you are dealing with a notary. Could you please tell us in detail about this area of activity? And how did your career start in this vector? It is a call of fate. After all, I am a third generation lawyer. To be honest, my first education was not devoted to law. I had been receiving my economic education in Poland, in Krakow. But while at home, in Lviv, on vacation, I learned about applying for law school, to the first year of the studies. I applied and entered and I do not regret my choice. For all my work experience, I have gone through all the steps of the legal profession, from the clerk in court to the assistant of a notary. But finally I had chosen for a notary. And for me, this area of activity is kind of special. Because of ignorance of the law, people usually, instead of turning to a specialist for help to resolve a particular issue, create a problem for themselves in matters in which they are incompetent. And at that moment it seems to the person that there is no decision. Of course, when I give professional advice or help to solve a question – a person seems to be coming to life, he is happy, he has free time. For this person, it’s like a new breath of life. I always approach the issue both qualitatively and creatively, so it is probably not only professional help but also psychological. When I help for a person to solve a problem, when I see the burning eyes with happiness and I see that the problem is gone, I realize that I am doing a useful and important thing and I get great pleasure due to it.

“The concept of popular diplomacy is an integral part of every country’s foreign policy.”

get at first professional advice on their subject and then decides to do or not to do, then this is a very big social matter.

You travel a lot, you interact with representatives of foreign political and business elites. Do you have the impression that the world knows disproportionately little about Ukraine, don’t you? What do you think should be done to improve the situation?

There is a high demand for notary services in Ukraine, but at the same time the notaries sphere is quite competitive. How do you manage to hold leadership positions? I have been working as a notary public since 2004. During this time period, I have got a certain reputation that constitutes a very valuable component today. In addition, I clearly understand all the benefits of teamwork and the importance of successful collaboration with partners. After all, when you clearly understand what you are doing and for what, you get the desired result. Of course, there are many competitors in in this sphere, but for me, any business, when it is competitive, is in demand. These are interconnected things for me. I have a strategic vision of my work. I always research the market, I study the practical and positive experience of competitors, I constantly analyze my colleagues abroad and apply for their practice, I keep my hand on the pulse of new legislation of Ukraine. When you are constantly up to date, it allows you to hold certain positions at the market. In the nearest future, I plan to create an online counseling service that will help citizens to make the right decisions in legal matters and do not get into the problems. If one is able to

In fact, according to my observations, Ukraine has been known for a long time, thus Taras Shevchenko’s poems have spread around the world and these poems are read and loved. Ukraine was known as one of the leading sports states even in the Soviet times. And the Klitschko brothers with their incredible victories, Andriy Shevchenko, Yana Klochkova, and Anatoliy Solovyanenko, one of the best opera singers of the world, and many other prominent Ukrainians presented Ukraine to the world with dignity and merit. But perhaps more important acquaintance with Ukraine was witnessed after the Revolution of Dignity. It is unfortunate that we began to talk more and more often about such tragic events, but these events had changed our attitude to Ukraine and to its recognition in the world. We are already being identified as a separate country, a state that defended and asserted its dignity, its territory, its rights and freedom. In my opinion, there are many positive changes to be made to improve our attitude towards Ukraine. A new state development strategy is being created, new successful laws are being adopted… But it should be understood that the improvement of our life and the improvement of Ukraine’s international image will not happen in the wake of the magic wand; it will have been taking all time. I believe that all of us should be involved and should contribute to it in every possible way.

As a person involved in international projects, please tell us, how powerful and effective do the people’s

WHO ARE YOU, MRS.НАЗВА SHEPTYTSKA? РУБРИКИ diplomacy is? Can the philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and members of the arts community do what diplomats are out of the able to do sometimes? Such a concept as a people’s diplomacy is an integral part of every country’s foreign policy. It doesn’t make much difference, whether you are a tourist in another country, or a student studying at a prestigious university, or an actor on tour – if you are Ukrainian, you have to represent your country and your people with dignity. People’s diplomacy is not a tightknit protocol. Some people’s diplomats can of course do more than the professional ones. Talking without ties, you can better understand the interlocutor and his intentions and, of course, better convey his point of view. It gives some advantages.

I am from Western Ukraine, where we help in need, share with our neighbor, protect and care for others, we have genetics. We are already born with these values. And of course, on all holidays, whether St. Nicholas Day, Christmas, or Easter, we pay the utmost attention to the vulnerable. We collect help and make gifts for orphanages. There are good traditions in Western Ukraine. And one of the brightest is the Christmas Nativity scene. But our Nativity scene was different. We MAKE gifts to everyone we visit. Such things should not be done because we want to look good and sincere people. We must be them. Charity is a natural thing.

Philanthropists have an access into the international financial and industrial structures, which makes it possible to communicate bypassing certain borders and certain conventions. Believe me it is very important for the foreign policy of the state. Of course, it is critically important to have a proper understanding of the state’s foreign policy priorities among these philanthropists, but this is a separate and very difficult issue. Personally, I do my best to represent Ukraine in the international arena and I am proud to be Ukrainian.

You do charity work. Don’t you think that philanthropists and philanthropists in our country are actually forced to do what the state does not do? I perceive the state as a large joint-stock company – maybe, because I’m a lawyer. Ordinary citizens are shareholders, the government is the board and we all have to get dividends. The law is equal for all. Simply saying, the state must fulfill its obligations. If, for example, the state forgets about disabled people, about large families, about pensioners, then philanthropists help them. We are also a state. The state is not only the government and the parliament. The state is all of us.

How exactly do you help such people? I take care of the problems of disabled people for a long time and understand that I have been doing the things that certain state structures should do, but I simply cannot stand aside. #18, January 2020

What does a successful woman mean to you? I think a woman is always successful. Because a woman is a continuation of kind, this is a caregiver, a mother who is raising the future. A woman is very multifaceted by nature. And we are constantly striving for something new, to set ourselves with the new tasks, with the new challenges and to get succeed. For me, success is about combining my favorite work, family, upbringing and friendship with my daughter and my hobbies. I love harmony in everything.

What was the most extraordinary challenge for you? Apparently, this is a contest of “Mrs. GLOBE”, because for me, as for a lawyer and a notary public, it was not an easy decision. It struck me that all participants in this competition are very self-sufficient and successful women. They share values similar to mine ones, but each of them has got its own culture and traditions. I was also impressed by the international scope of the competition. More than 80 women from 60 countries do take part in the competition. This project seemed to me the most structured, it is very democratic and loyal to the participants, but with its clear rules that must be followed. I liked how the organizers of this competition have selected the participants. Selection criteria are impressive ones; it comes only about external data of the participants, their achievements in life, their intellectual qualities are taken into account either. This competition has got a very important social component. The competition is supported by the WIN Foundation (Women in Need), the charity structures that takes care of women who are in difficult living conditions and have suffered through the domestic violence. It means a lot and I think not only for me. After weighing the pros and cons, I decided to participate, because it is a good opportunity to meet the challenge and to manifest myself.

Of course, as a successful woman you received the title “Mrs. MEDITERRANEAN.GLOBE 2019”, what kind of title is that? My title is “Mrs. Mediterranean.” I thought for a long time what exactly this title means to me. And finally, I realized that the Mediterranean

30

means the water element, the solar energy, the energy of women, of mothers and caregivers, whom exactly Ukrainian women are.

What does it mean to be a participant of the contest? Is it whimsy, entertainment or is it something much more? This is without a doubt a new step in my life. After winning this title, I had a new perspective in life. I have got a sort of new vision. This other angle applies to my work. Participation in this competition has become a powerful energy recharge for me, if I may say so about myself. And I am very grateful for the fate of this challenge, for winning of this title and the organizers for their unrivaled sense of happiness. When a woman wears a real crown, it is an incredible inner state that I have never had before. It combines at the same time joy, pride, pleasure, confusion and excitement and happiness. These are unique emotions. I would recommend every woman to wear a crown and relive these feelings.

Would you like to initiate this competition in Ukraine? Mrs. GLOBE is held annually only in the United States and China. Of course, I want very much this competition to be held in our country, thus Ukraine can become the Third country of Mrs. GLOBE. Moreover, during my participation at the competition, I was able to receive a Grant for a broadcast license “Mrs. GLOBE 2019 in Ukraine. I won this Grant competeting with the 60 countries of the world. . I think it’s a sign. But I understand that such a large-scale project is possible to be completed not only with the availability of funds, but also due to well-coordinated teamwork. This is a complex and large-scale project; however, I am interested in working at this direction. There will be news later; you will be the first to know.

What do you advise for our businesswoman to combine business, an active public position and remain a charming woman? We must remain clear about our goals; we must have our priorities set correctly. We are the Ukrainian women; we are very strong, and above all, strong in spirit. The ability to combine inner and outer beauty, femininity, career and social activity is our strength at the same time. The conversation was held by Anna Avramenko #18, January 2020

ART IN UKRAINE The theatric company “U!ZAHVATI” has been creating the first in Ukraine immersive performances since the 2016. The format rethinks the roles and the relationship of the actors with the audience, when the spectator becomes the participant and the co-creator of the new art reality. The “U! ZAHVATI” team not just reforms the traditional view upon the theatric arts, but it either creates the new senses and proposes for the spectators to live the new emotional experience through. Such performances are to be named as the following ones – “Time”, “The dialogs”, “The Day-Shadow” and “Remote Kyiv” (in partnership with German-Swiss Company Rimini Protokoll). The FD correspondent had a conversation with the company founders Oleksandr Stuzhuk and Oleksandr Orlovskyi about the features of the new art activity for Ukraine.

32

#18, January 2020

Tell us, please, about the setting up of your theatric team? What are the main features in its activity? – Indeed we are not the theatric team in the ordinary meaning of the word. In fact, we are a group of people that has gathered together to get the mutual goals and each of us would fail to do that alone. We want to be useful for the society. We have united to create the high quality art product in an immersive new format for Ukraine. Thus, we have started the realization of the projects that would please us and our spectators as well. We began to form up our own audience. But our projects have been and still are rather unusual for their participants and this feature has transformed not only into our main particularity but, also, into the certain obstacle for us.

What is this obstacle in? – The issue is the following one. Until the spectator would not visit our performances, until he or she would not feel the real spirit of them, the spectator would have not been able to catch the sense completely. Spectator has not got the proper background and no previous experience to be acquainted with such form of the art. Sure, the theatric activity is the closest way of art to our performing but not completely. Clear, that we do have the spectators, the actors, the scenario and the drama plot but in the same time we have been targeting the goals that are not coincide with the theatric goals. We are interested in the creation of the circumstances under which the spectator would be able not just to think over the important existence issues but to expand new emotions either.

Could we say that that your projects represent the new type of the art? – Sincerely speaking, such type of the art is not a new one. It has been existed for quite a long period of time.

How have you picked the immersive performances idea up? What has been the impetus and what had inspired you? – This format turned up in Europe 20 years ago. Now, it is on the good move throughout the world. When we came to know about the immersive theatre, we started to explore that: the art director of the team Polina Baranychenko had visited the performances in the different countries to get the first impressions. Then, we started to look for our own style and for our own senses. The most important issue in the immersive format for us is a possibility to stop, to understand oneself and to live the new experience through, which crucially important at our rationalized epoch. That is why at each new project we make the distance from the entertainment longer. We propose for our spectators interesting but sometimes not a simple way of the self-understanding in the certain art space.

The immersive performances are quite new and not common issue for Ukraine. Had not you happened to get scared of its realization in our rather conservative society? – Oh, no. We understood the risks of the new products and of the new markets creation. At the new market to succeed is not an easy thing. Our team has started to answer the following questions: how to sell the uncommon products?

ART IN UKRAINE

How to set up the market and how to develop the successful brand? We understood that we created something special and such things had been always attractive ones. The modern project is a risky thing but in the same time it is an adventure. Also, we have entered into the space in a which we had no competitors. We have competed with the traditional theatric industry. We do develop the new industry that has got the huge potentiality. This potentiality foresees not just the art projects. It covers educational and social projects as well, because we make such projects more competitive due to emotional recruiting of the participants.

You have already realized several projects. We mean the city promenades “Time” and “Remote Kyiv”, and the performance in the library “The dialogues”. Have they been successful? – Yes, sure, they had. The people have been looking all the for the new ways of the entertainment. It was the thing we had been

34

#18, January 2020

aimed for, whilst realizing our first project “Time” for the audience and this project has had its the third season this year by the way. It is the performance-promenade in the earphones, the walking through the city streets, when the sight and the hearing are linked with the feelings. Thoughts and associations of the participants had echoed deeply in the souls of our spectators. And then in the social networks they shared their impressions, they invited their friends, they bought the tickets for their relatives and thus the groups of people in the earphones appeared to be more common in the streets of Kyiv.

In autumn the performance-promenade “Time” was presented for the Croatian audience – you have realized it in Zagreb. Was it difficult to perform? What is the difference between the Ukrainian spectator and the Croatian one? – That was the classical performancepromenade that can be adapted in any city taking

ART IN UKRAINE

into account its original air and its character. We have the three-year experience of the promenades realization in Kyiv and it has enabled us to organize the creative and the technical components of the performing in Zagreb. We should not forget that the Croatian media and Croatian audience have been acquainted with the immersive performances. For example, one year ago the theatrical company from Milano had presented its similar project there. The differences between Ukrainian and Croatian audiences are hard to be analyzed but the reaction of the Croatian people in the media was rather amiable.

What can you tell us about your creative plans for the year 2020? – Since the end of the next spring the new season of the promenades will be started and we will be overglad to see our spectators again at the performances “Time” and “Remote Kyiv”. The last one, by the way, was created in

2019 in a partnership with the German-Swiss theatrical company Rimini Protokoll. The project was supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Ukraine, by the Swiss Council of the Arts Pro Helvetia and by the ProCredit Bank from Germany. Sure, we are interested in the new projects, in the new creative collaborations and partnerships with the Ukrainian and foreign colleagues. Meanwhile, we are not going to talk in details about our plans but we would like to make a pause until the new performances and the new experience will be realized for our spectators. The goal of the “U!ZAHVATI” company is not a profit, but a triumph, though the triumph is measured by the admiration of the spectators as well as by the satisfaction of the work that has been carried out. This logic has its symmetry. When we make our spectators happy – we are the profitable ones. The triumph is not a result, but the process. “Individuality is more important than fashion trends”

Aina Gasse

For many years, the fashion style of clothing by Aina Gasse has been in the spotlight of Ukrainian high fashion fans. Its impeccable symmetry that is multiplied by romantic ease captivates the hearts of show business stars and political elites, for whom recognizable and individual styles are the crucial factors in their own expression in the world. Today, a talented designer does not limit herself to just one direction. Like many famous couturiers, Aina Gasse has successfully tried her hand in film industry. Her fantastically beautiful costumes will be seen by Ukrainian audiences in the first Ukrainian fantasy film “Only a Miracle” (directed by Olena Karetnik). For the movie Aina Gasse has created about 500 costumes, 300 of them are handmade. With Ms Aina, we talked not only about the painstaking work for the film, but also about her secret hobbies and future fashion trends. Last year turned out to be extremely fruitful for you. For the first time in 2 years you presented a pret-a-porter collection at Ukrainan Fashion Week and as a costume artist you have been involved in the filming of the fantasy movie “Only a Miracle”. How did everything worked out and didn’t interfere with the creation of collection or vice versa? In fact, for me it is a small workload, because every year I plan to create two collections. In addition, I have clients and projects. I create clothes for corporate customers and shows. When it came about working on a movie, the main thing was to meet the timing and shooting schedule. I had no right to let the team down because everything was planned 7 months ahead. Each week I was sent a clear assignment stating how many suits to create. So the time constraint kept me on track. But still, it is extremely wonderful! This is my profession, which I love very much, so when I was working on film I felt in my place.

How did you get into the project and have you ever dreamed of trying yourself in such a role? As a costume artist, I have already worked in the theater with the art director Vitaly Malakhov. He gave me complete creative freedom, and it was nothing short of ecstatic. But in cinema, this is my first experience. I immediately agreed to Olena Karetnik’s proposal. We discussed all the scenes together, especially the most important ones. By the time of filming, I had almost all the sketches ready. We all expect that the film will have great resonance and it will be noticed not only in Ukraine but also abroad. #18, January 2020

Your brand’s clothing in Ukraine is especially liked by business women and political elite. Concise and elegance to please the modern city dweller. A 17th century costume was needed for the film’s future. Where and how were they inspired to create them? Of course, not so much is known about the costume of this era. But I studied the history of costume at the institute, so I had an idea of what sources to get information from. The library of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine named after Volodymyr Vernadsky gave me invaluable assistance, because the most of the reproductions of this period are stored. Unfortunately, these reproductions are not handed over and are forbidden to copy. There was no choice but to draw by hand. But then Olena Karetnik and I came to the conclusion that we are still creating a fairy tale, so the costumes should not be too historical. It inspired me to take into account the peculiarities of not forgetting that our heroes are, first and foremost, the individuals. Therefore, we have deviated somewhat from the historical truth and created a unique costume for each

38

character. Of course, it took a lot of times to re-read the script to immerse yourself in the mood and character traits of each character, and to create their images accordingly. So everything I learned about the history of the costume simplified and complicated my tasks in the same time. For example, I really wanted to put on hats of the time, because they are extremely beautiful, but the director saw it in a different way.

For the movie you have created about 500 costumes, more than half of them are handmade ones. Please tell us about your team that helped to realize such a great idea. Were there any experts from your fashion house? Yes, of course, every costume went through our salon. In the first stage, the sketches and materials were approved. Olena Karetnik is very meticulous and exacting. The little things that, in my opinion, could go unnoticed are extremely striking at the sight of cameras. So we approved everything to the last stitch on the shutters. To make modern dressing imperceptible in the frame, the seams on the front of the garment are

decorated with a hand stitch or lace. In the salon, we made patterns and tried them on the actors, then disassembled, trimmed and sent to our contractors, who sewed everything together. Decorating and the last stage of the preparation were done exclusively at our studio. Technologically sophisticated attire, as well as the outfits of the main characters were made only by us. The main characters had a few fits because it was very important to understand the degree of fit of the suits and corsets. The skillful masters of our studio, made all kinds of embroidery and knitting. They decorated the hats and they dyed feathers with lace, because you would not find such shades in Ukraine, and we did not have time to go and buy abroad. Things had been constantly changing, and we didn’t always understand when it was necessary to prepare costumes for one scene or another. We only knew that winter we had to shoot in wintertime, and summertime scenes would be filmed at the end of spring.

In your collections, you do like to use leather, lace, knitwear; but did you not feel limited in the choice of materials within the budget of the film?

I had complete freedom. The fact that we had a split our heroes into those ones from wealthy families and from more humble families added to the convenience. We used lace, velvet, taffeta, silk and a lot of handmade costumes for wealthy characters and everything on the screen has got a chic look. There are costumes created from the start to the finish by hands. For example, I mean the boots that are hand-woven with fur. We decided not to use natural fur, so that the tale did not fall then a wave of indignation. All the fur was artificial, and we trimmed and dyed it to give a variety of shades. I think this is the right decision. We also bought and rent vintage brooches with semi-precious stones, and ordered handmade fittings in that time. Whilst shooting the singer Lama in the role of Fairy Ice, we used stones and crystals. Either, we created embroideries and crowns in the technique of hand-carving and, finally, everything turned out to look very nice!

“Only a Miracle was filmed in winter in the snowfull Carpathians. How often were you able to be on the set? I was present in the first stages of filming in Bukovel, just at the breaking of the plate. My team and I came to understand how things #18, January 2020

would be. It was the first fitting of the main characters. They were freezing cold, so I felt like I needed to wear them. We adapted all the outerwear so that it could be placed under it with insulation and artificial fur, only so it was possible to warm the actors. Under their suits we had to dress them up with the thermal underwear, trousers, coasters, they would freeze in the synthetic cloth; the more there were many night shots, with heavy frosts. I could not leave the studio: if I went to the shooting in Bukovel, many costumes would be sewn online and some important nuances would be ignored. There were costumers on the court with whom we kept in touch.

an important role. I don’t care about everyday life stories. Even when I create corporate clothing, I understand that I have to embody what the customer dreams of, but cannot put into words. So I watch people a lot and notice the individual traits that need to be embodied in a suit. I am open to any work because I am interested in designing myself. And in jewelry and in the interior too...

Many famous designers created costumes for cult films. Would you like to continue to create cinema clothing? And if you had a choice, what clothes would you like to recreate?

In the design of the premises, I think the most important thing is the attempt to take into account how in one area or another sun will move during the day. Jewelry is also a private order. Yes, I was designing a gold pen with art nouveau diamonds. Very sophisticated! We in Ukraine could not create it, because it required a machine with a very thin thread. This pen according to my sketch was collected already abroad. Generally, I dream to develop a gift line for my VIP clients. These can be pens, notepads, or pen holders that allow a business person to enjoy visual pleasure. I also love when

Of course, I know that as a designer I can only be valuable in a costume movie. It would be great to participate in a historical movie about any era. Or maybe in a children’s or contemporary film where there will be fashion – in those movies where the suit plays

there is something special on my desk that creates not only a lot of knowledge and work, but also professionalism. The professional constantly hones the skill, and this skill is noticed by others. In my opinion, there is a time when individualism will be more important than fashion trends. This is evident even in the collections of many world designers. The collection is united by one idea, but on the catwalk appear so scattered models of absolutely fashionable appearance, in which the designers manage to emphasize their highlights. I think this is only the beginning and everything will develop with a crazy progression. I watch this for my customers.

Do you follow the Uktrainian movie making industry? Which films do you like? To name but a lot, as a fashin gersigner I can notice the stylish visualization. Unfortunately I do not remember the names of the movies but I am proud of our film making indusrty. And I dare to belive that this trend will be a lasting one. Among the guests were ambassadors, diplomats, representatives of the Government of Ukraine, patrons, businessmen and representatives of artistic community.

— I see the potential, because for the second time in a row, I am personally there. And I see this project evolving, expanding, deepening the emotional and friendly relationships and that is what we currently need with our partners, our friends and neighbors. Therefore, we will strongly support and assist both the Fashion of Diplomacy and the Parade of Nations, and similar projects, – said MP, Representative of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine – Irina Vereshchuk. The concert program was opened by Ukrainian virtuoso pianist Yevgeny Khmara. The talented pianist impressed the audience from the first seconds of the performance. The clear and delicate timbre of the violins, combined with the voluminous and velvety cello, has added a new depth to the masterful play of Yevgeny. None of the attendees remained indifferent. The Parade of Nations was finished with the Parade of Flags under the music of the legend of Ukrainian show business Pianoboy Dmitry Shurov. The new composition of the artist perfectly broadcasted the main message of the event – “you are not alone”. In fact, the Parade of Nations brings together the souls and hearts of

The main goal of the event is to unite nations for the sake of peace and prosperity, by learning about the cultures, history and traditions of different states and to deepen the relations between Ukraine and the world.

— It is very difficult to tell in a few words about such a great country as India. We are the largest democracy on the planet with a population of over a billion. Our economy is booming. Today we will showcase India through the art of dance. But this is just a drop in the sea of our country’s culture

and traditions – says Exraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of India in Ukraine, Mr. Partha Satpathi. — In my opinion, it is very important to organize such events because your country – Ukraine knows that a positive step is needed. This event is actually such a step, which is why I am here. Today you will hear a Belgian-Ukrainian singer representing Belgium. Perhaps culture and art are the best ways to bring people together. There are undoubtedly other economies, for example, but the most effective is culture and the arts – says Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassor of Belgium in Ukraine, Mr. Alex Lenarts. Every year at the Nations Parade, Ukraine presents itself not only through music or singing, but also through talented Ukrainian designers. The Ukrainian brand that quickly wins the hearts of fashion lovers, not only in Ukraine but also abroad, LKcostume had demonstrated new “looks” of diplomatic and business dress code, showing how comfortable and stylish clothes can be. #18, January 2020

OVERALL RESULTS The main purpose of the event is to unite nations for the sake of peace and prosperity, by learning about the culture, history and traditions of different countries and to deepen the relations between Ukraine and the world. Particular emphasis this year has been placed on the Beneficiary Partners who have previously joined the project and participated in the charity. Beneficiary Partners of the Parade of Nations expressed their sincere enthusiasm for the level of organization and organization of the event. Serghiy Ivashchenko – Member of Poltava City Employers’ Organization, Director of Industrial Enterprise Combine:

— Investing in young people means stimulating change in the country. We help for the young people in a variety of projects, progressive cases, we help to learn from the experience, to generate modern ways of solving problems of the city, society, to improve living standards. Together with KVP – Combine production enterprises we not only build houses, but also build a happy future for our children and young people! Thank you to the organizers and everyone who supports such projects! Create miracles for everyone! Join now! Vasyl Kyrychenko is the General Director of Svitoch JSC, an agrarian worker with the title of Honored Agricultural Worker.

— We all know that respect is the basis of all human relations. It is nice that this charity evening “Parade of Nations” is not a one-off event. It is noticeable that a titanic and powerful work has been carried out that produces results from year to year, and Parade of Nations

has become an annual charity event. Unfortunately, in our society there is almost no culture of charity. Why this happens is a philosophical question, it can take a long time to talk about it. But how much should pay tribute to Anna Avramenko, who managed charitable actions, such unselfish entertainment, to involve the international community, to unite society. Show that there are people in need of help, not always material. And charity is not only about raising money, but also about unity and understanding. You know, this evening, my wife and I heard people agreeing to visit each other, from different countries – visits to help, discussing treatment, education children who need it. And I realized that when I see the eyes of a child we were able to help with difficult surgery, and to extend her life. When I see her running, see her grow up – as if she is saturated with incredibly great life energy. When I see the eyes of the talented little boy Vanichka Gnilosir, a child from a large, poor family who helped with a trip to a competition where the child receives the All-Ukrainian Prize, it is also motivating. I see that her life is filled with joyous emotions, the same emotions fill me. When I see a summer teacher come on a wheelchair and now she can walk, #18, January 2020

it is very inspiring to work on. And to help others ... I am grateful to Heaven that I have the opportunity to help others. And so warm to the soul that there are people on this planet who are ready to share the warmth of their soul!. Anna Bevz, the President of OSCAR Black Sea Crewing Company:

— I thank the organizers of this wonderful event for the opportunity to represent our company at the Parade of Nations. Any business, especially maritime, is built on professionalism and human relationships. Trust and understanding are the basis of successful business development. The ability to communicate, learn about traditions and culture, share experience with representatives of other countries, study economic achievements are the important factors in the growth of the company, and the Parade of Nations successfully contributes to this. Participation in charity events makes it possible to make our world better and better. Holding the Parade of Nations is a good tradition in our country. Valeriy Patonych, the Founder of the international center for the treatment of eating disorders Revocanda Plus

— Our time is a time of constant stress. People lack positive emotions. People need to be more gentle and kind to each other; people need to understand their neighbor. I would like to thank the organizers of this wonderful event for reminding us all of mercy and humanity. Alexander Bilostotsky, the Founder and CEO of Quickhouse Construction Company:

— I believe that charity, assistance to socially vulnerable sections of the population by private entrepreneurs is an important and important matter in our difficult time.
