The Heirloom Gardens Oral History Project is a project which collects and shares stories of people from the Southeastern United States about traditional farming, gardening, seed sharing, and foods. Our exhibit features the stories collected from 17 Farmville residents. The project was conducted by Princeton University and the Ujama Cooperative Farming Alliance which cultivates and distributes heirloom seeds as well as grows culturally meaningful crops for food, healing, and textiles
The opening of the Farmville Heirloom Garden Oral History Exhibit will be on Saturday, November 8th from 11 am until 2 pm. The exhibit is composed of photograph collages of Farmville people and places which represent the major themes of the oral stories collected for the project. Each collage has a fiveseven minute montage of story clips describing the rich farming and gardening heritage of Farmville. Saturday’s exhibit opening will include several stations for all ages in the auditorium, in addition to the exhibit itself. There will be a storytelling circle with Ms. Bonita from Ujama, a seed cleaning station, a craft station, a listening center so that anyone can listen to the stories of our Farmville residents in their entirety, as well as a tasting station with some traditional garden cuisine provided by Gorham’s Café.
The exhibit will be on display at the library in our hallway gallery outside the auditorium through December 19th . Then it will move to the Local History Room as a permanent exhibit along with access to the full recordings of the Farmville stories.
