Graduation Ceremony Remarks from Head of School Georgia S. Zaiser

“While this year looked different, what matters most is the bond and the togetherness we have as we gather today. Today we honor our graduates in this milestone that marks the gateway to young adulthood. Facing the enormous uncertainties and disruptions brought on by the pandemic, the Class of 2021 responded with remarkable determination, passion, and resilience.

“I stand here so very proud of our community. Teachers—you are incredible educators—with unwavering dedication and compassion. Parents, grandparents, and friends, your support system provided a safety net for our graduates that is crucial in times of uncertainty. Graduates, I am thrilled to see you here on the stage today, crossing over the bridge for the very last time.

You are ready. We are proud.

“Today, I am honored to share some thoughts with you.

“Last week, while surfing the alumni page of my high school, I learned that one of my favorite teachers, Mr. Kelly, passed away.

I wish he knew how much he impacted my life as an educator. I felt it fitting to share this memory today, so his impact lives on through my words.

“I vividly recall my AP French class, as languages didn’t come easy for me. My spoken French, at the time, was tarnished by a wicked Long Island accent. I struggled in class but wanted to succeed. Mr. Kelly made learning fun. He stood on desks, sang songs, and truly showed he cared by meeting with students regularly and pushing us to be our best both in and out of the classroom.

“As a senior in high school, I made a poor decision and decided to ‘cut’ class and head to the beach for the day. This was out of character for me, and I recall how disappointed he was with my behavior when he learned about my misstep. Mr. Kelly was my advisor, so he had to notify my parents. As you can imagine, this news didn’t go over well at home. At the time, I was upset and embarrassed. I wanted to put it behind me—rather quickly. Alas, that didn’t happen, and we revisited the incident as I sat in the Assistant Principal’s office with Mr. Kelly. I heard a standard 1980s lecture on behavior which, of course, regaled all the amazing things my three siblings had done—it isn’t easy being the youngest of four!

“Fast forward to present day. I will tell you, I learned from this mistake and understood that I had broken Mr. Kelly’s trust and lowered my standards to be ‘one of the crowd.’ Knowing I disappointed someone who believed in me was tough to handle.

“As I reflect on that difficult conversation today, I recall the emphasis on character. Mr. Kelly always asked, ‘What kind of person do you want to be when you grow up?’ Not, ‘What career do you want to pursue?’ I found his focus rather interesting, as I often heard my siblings and parents say, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up, Georgia?’ I can tell you now that most people don’t know what they want to be as an adult until they are well beyond their high school and even college years. I wanted to work in radio, and here I stand as a Head of School. Light years away from hosting a radio show!

“So, you never know where your life will take you and what life will throw at you. This year delivered that message loud and clear to all of us in this room. No matter what, focusing on what kind of person you want to be: kind, caring, compassionate, even driven, will help you determine your path. I encourage you to try new things in high school. Listen and learn from your mistakes.

Life is about those teachable moments and what you do with the knowledge you gain. Take risks, stay focused but always be a good person.

“The opportunity in front of you is great, and the support and care you received from Far Hills is like no other. Far Hills is all of us. And when I think about this, I feel hopeful. I feel hopeful that our graduates, as a rising generation, will move forward with empathy, love, and kindness. Using the foundation of the five pillars to strengthen your resolve no matter what comes your way.

“Congratulations, Class of 2021! You have grown exponentially during your years here, and I look forward to learning about how you will build on your Far Hills experience in high school and the years to come. Stay in touch, come back often, and remember you will always be a Falcon!”

Speech from Outgoing President of the Student Government, Caroline Calello

11 Lessons

“FAMILY, FRIENDS, FACULTY, ADMINISTRATION, AND MY FELLOW CLASSMATES, GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME. It is my great honor to stand before you today after a year in which we faced challenges like never before. I am so proud of the Far Hills community and grateful to be able to celebrate together today.

“In September of 2012, I entered Far Hills as a kindergartener in Ms. Cirelli’s class. I still remember proudly telling her that I picked out my outfit all by myself. Of course, it was the same tan romper every other girl was wearing. That was nine years ago. Some of you “the lifers” have been here even longer, eleven years. And here we are 11 years later, 11 first days of school later, 11 ‘Christmas is a Feeling’ later, 11 Field Days later (go white!), and 11 years full of memories.

To commemorate each of these years, I am going to share 11 lessons that I have learned at Far Hills Country Day School.

“11: SAY GOOD MORNING, EVERY MORNING.

From Kindergarten good mornings with Mrs. Frustaci in the Piazza to Mr. Sansone and Mr. Thompson taking temperatures and playing fun and varied music, every day started with a simple good morning which prepared us for the day ahead. Saying good morning is a habit I hope I never lose.

“10: WIN THE DAY.

After good morning, Mr. Sansone always reminds us to ‘win the day.’ Do your best TODAY and take advantage of the opportunities and resources we have here at Far Hills to be our best. Winning the day is about understanding that to accomplish something, you need to collect little wins day after day to get the big victory.

“9: DON’T SHOW UP LATE TO MR. KRAMER’S CLASS. HARSH PENALTIES WILL BE IMPOSED. “8: BE A GOOD TEAMMATE.

In sixth grade, borrowing a field hockey stick from Mrs. Houghland and going out to play for the first time with the older girls in seventh and eighth grades was intimidating, but the encouragement they gave us set the tone for how we would treat the classes behind us.

Far Hills teaches us over and over about the importance of sportsmanship. Cheer each other on and keep spirits high. The support that I have received from all of my teammates on Far Hills teams has been amazing! Put it all out on the field, and remember how precious our time as Falcons really is.

“7: IF YOU’RE GOING TO BRING FOOD AND YOU DON’T WANT TO GET CAUGHT, BRING SOME FOR MS. SVENDSEN. ESPECIALLY IF IT’S JUNIOR MINTS. “6: PERSEVERE.

When I was in fifth grade and in Mrs. Iuliano’s math class, I remember struggling greatly with a specific worksheet. Math happened to be fourth period, so that meant that recess was next.

I remember getting up to leave to join my friends, and Mrs. Iuliano asked me to stay and work with the problem for a little longer.

I agreed, and eventually, after an additional 20 minutes, I finished the problem. Far Hills has taught me that if I want to succeed, I need to be resilient and not give up.

“5: CAROLINE, GO SIT IN THE HALL.

Sometimes we make mistakes, and when we do, we need to admit it and learn to be better. I probably learned more from the mistakes I made than I did from the things that came easy to me.

I bet every single one of my classmates could think of a time they did something they were not especially proud of but has made them better equipped for better choices in the future. Mr. Freeman deserves a special shout-out for this particular point: if it’s not going well, take a reset and go sit in the hall.

“4: IN ‘CHRISTMAS IS A FEELING,’ MAKE SURE TO ENUNCIATE ‘LA-ST ALL YEAR.’

“3: SAY YES.

At the end of last school year, Mr. Thompson wrote to me to encourage me to take chances and say yes. Whether it was Student Government, Ethics Bowl, Service Learning, or the Leap of Faith in the Ropes Course, I’m not sorry I did. Maybe for some of you, it was trying out for the play or tackling a tough Expo topic. Our teachers at Far Hills give us courage to take chances and say yes, even when it seems hard.

“2: DO NOT GO WHITE WATER RAFTING IN A LIGHTNING STORM.

Especially if you are a little sick. Or even really sick. But if you find yourself on the riverbank waiting for the storm to pass, hopefully, you will be lucky enough to have good friends by your side.

Which leads me to my last lesson:

“1: NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP.

I have known most of you for a long time—at least a long time in our young lives. We have learned how to be good friends, how to forgive each other, and care for each other, and how to support and cheer for each other. I hope that I can continue to support and cheer for each and every one of you for the rest of our lives.

“We have so much to be grateful for in our Far Hills family. It’s impossible to name it all. Let me just say thank you for giving this class of Falcons our wings to fly wherever life takes us. We will always take these lessons with us. Thank you.”

This year at Graduation, we all shared a special sentiment when four Far Hills Alumni had the privilege of presenting their children with the treasured Far Hills Alumni pin. What’s even more astounding? Three of the four alumni all share the same Far Hills graduation year, the Class of 1989.

Roger Christman ’89, Trent Miller ’89, Andrew Scott ’89, and Jordan Ehmann (Price) ’93 all shared in a special moment as they continue to bestow the legacy of Far Hills on to their children.

Throughout this past school year, these remarkable students were tested in more ways than one and know what it means to endure hardship and disappointment just as they reach the summit of their Far Hills experience. And yet, our students have embraced the challenges and have consistently looked for opportunities to leave their mark on Far Hills and create a legacy for the Class of 2021. HEY, LOOK ME OVER On June 9, 2021, we gathered in the PAC once again for one of the most beloved year-end traditions at Far Hills. We celebrated the achievements of our Kindergarten–Grade 4 students at the Lower School Closing Exercises.

Each grade performed our traditional special rendition of a Broadway show tune that summarizes their school year. The celebration ended with the monumental moment of each student crossing the Far Hills bridge symbolizing their crossing over to the next grade level.

This year’s ceremony marked the first time we have gathered to celebrate our exceptional students since the Holiday Concert of 2019.

ur beloved Director of Physical Education, Linda Houghland, retired this June after 41 years of dedication to our students.

Over the past four decades, Mrs. Houghland’s adventurous spirit and tireless dedication have touched each Far Hills student who walked our halls. In her honor, we are proud to announce the establishment of the Linda Houghland Adventure Trip Fund. Mrs. Houghland’s influence and inspiration will live on each year as our students experience the joys of our unique Adventure Trip program. Between the Denim and Diamonds Evening of Gratitude and the Field Day of Giving, our community donated a total of $245,000 in support of the Linda Houghland Adventure Trip Fund.

We are pleased to announce a modification to our School Leadership Team and introduce key personnel and their new roles that took effect on July 1.

Pat Barry Interim Director of Lower School Through her nearly 30-year career, Pat held various leadership roles at independent, Montessori, and Catholic schools—having served as a Head of School at both The Montessori Children’s Academy and Hoboken Montessori School. She was instrumental in increasing enrollment at The Green Vale School as Director of Admissions and during her tenure as Director of Lower School Admissions and Financial Aid at Oak Knoll School.

Linda Corcoran, P ‘21 Director of Engagement and Philanthropy Linda has been with Far Hills for 12 years and is in her third year in this role.

Linda is strategically leading Far Hills’ Capital Campaign, as well as all events and fundraising efforts on behalf of the school.

Lori Fitzgibbon Chief Financial Officer Lori has been with Far Hills for four years.

Oliver Forsythe Director of Technology Following Cathy Varga’s retirement, Oliver stepped into the role of Director of Technology at the beginning of July. With over ten years of experience and direct mentorship from Cathy, Oliver is ready and prepared to take on this new opportunity.

Shannon Hurley Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications Shannon was formerly the Digital Marketing Specialist at Far Hills and will return to our community as the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications. She steps into the role with nearly two decades of professional experience in the marketing and communications industry—a year of which was spent at Far Hills Country Day School.

five years of experience in middle school education. Emily will manage all aspects of daily Upper School life.

Edward Thompson, P ‘32 Director of Operations and Secondary School Placement In this newly defined position, Ed will create and maintain critical connections between campus operations, strategic initiatives, and the impending transition to “a state of normalcy” as it relates to operations and programming. Ed will continue his role as Director of Secondary School Placement.

Rachel Yu, P ‘22, ‘25 Director of Admission Rachel is entering her seventh year as our Director of Admission and her twelfth year as a member of the Far Hills community.

Rachel tirelessly works to admit new students and welcome them—and their families—into our community.

Georgia Zaiser, P ‘12, ‘16 Head of School Georgia has been a part of the Far Hills community for over 25 years. Under her leadership, Far Hills increased enrollment by nearly 10%, successfully launched a new verbal identity that inspired a fresh creative platform, and exceeded the Annual Fund goal by $61,000.

NOTABLE FACULTY Far Hills Hosts Two Mind, Brain, and Education Conferences for New Jersey Schools In partnership with The New Jersey Association of Independent Schools and the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning, Peter McBride coordinated and facilitated two regional conferences inviting local schools to learn about translating academic research on learning and the brain to classroom practice. Special thanks to faculty presenters: Christina Sopko, Maria Saba, Sue Miller, Maedean Kramer, Roseanne Panico, Kathryn Brower, Amy Burns, Hope Svendsen, and Dan Kramer.

School Leadership Team The School Leadership Team attended various yearly conferences, including NJAIS Trustee Day, The Enrollment Management Associations Annual Conference, and The National Business Officers Association’s Annual Meeting.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Christina Sopko attended almost 40 trainings centered around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, including NJAIS’s annual People of Color Conference, Pollyanna Inc’s Anti-Racism Series, Glasgow Group’s Diversity Practitioners Institute, and Far Brook’s Widening the Lens Conference.

Christina is also a member of the DEI Collaborative, a group of DEI Coordinators from all over the United States.

New Jersey Association of Independent Schools Institute for Female Leaders Kelsey Meisenbacher attended a six-part series focused on empowering women at all stages of their professional journey and promoting professional growth for aspiring school leaders.

Innovating Instruction Conference Julie Blanco, Sue Miller, Lynne Douglas, and Krissy Coombs attended a two-day experience dedicated to taking best practices in teaching and applying them to a blended learning context. The group gleaned curricular tools and instructional methods to apply to their teaching practices.

Orton-Gillingham Training Kelsey Meisenbacher and Lynne Douglas completed Orton-Gillingham Training at the Intermediate level through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education.

In addition, the entire faculty engaged with the Glasgow Group, a consortium of consultants dedicated to providing tools, skills, and experiences to schools.

Practical Week of Language Teaching Rosario Bernabeu and Maria Saba joined a global conference at which more than 40 language teachers shared teaching strategies and methods proven effective in the Spanish classroom.

Many faculty members participated in the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Subscription Series that included 11 seminars on various topics relevant to schools today.

Rosario and Maria were also selected to present at a conference that was sponsored by a prestigious university in Spain. The title of their presentation is “How to Implement Project-Based Learning in the World Language Class.”

Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning Far Hills continued its partnership with the CTTL and participated in their seasonal webinars. Shout out to the Summer 2020 Webinar attendees: Natalie Sturgeon, Maria Saba, Jen Wagar, Christina Sopko, and Peter McBride. Likewise to the Winter Webinar participants: Emily Seelaus, Nikki Todaro, Rosario Bernabeu, Maria Saba, and Christina Sopko.

National Art Education Foundation Roseanne Panico and Kathryn Brower attended a National convention attended by over 4,500 visual arts and design educators.
