Fanning Howey designs elementary schools to build future-ready skills. From makerspaces for future terraforming engineers to media centers for young coders, we give students the tools to explore, discover and dream.
Our elementary school architects and designers understand the cognitive and emotional needs of each age group. Early learning centers rich with sensory education and higher-level classrooms with video production labs are all part of our passion for personalized learning.
Trailside Elementary School
Zionsville, IN
Fanning Howey collaborated with Zionsville educators to update an elementary school prototype last built for the district in 2007. Design strategies reimagine the entrance, giving the school its own identity.
Prototype upgrades improve technology for 21st century learning, create additional large group rooms and provide more efficient workspace for teachers. The design team master planned the site to support the new elementary school and another academic building in the future.

to students of Pike Township while addressing changes in the school’s construction funding.
Fanning Howey won an invited design competition with a concept that proposed a first phase comprised of selective renovations and additions, followed by a second phase of new construction. The multi-phase approach allowed the District to build using operating funds rather than go out for a public referendum. The cost-effective design has brought a new era of learning to College Park with flexible classrooms, integrated technology and plenty of natural light.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EXPERIENCE
Alexandria-Monroe Elementary School
Alexandria, IN
Alexandria’s existing study called for the addition of a K-2 wing to their 3-6 school. Using strategic design solutions and repurposed space, Fanning Howey was able to reinvent the study and deliver the equivalent of a new elementary school within the same budget.
Our team started by right-sizing the existing media center to enhance the school’s STEM program, which created a new Project Lead The Way lab, makerspaces and an Exploration Commons. These spaces were each designed with a large movable wall, allowing them to transform into a large group area. Characterized as “The Knuckle”, the central space serves as the hub of the school and the heart of its STEM program. The school can now teach 125 extra students without new construction.

The renovation of Harrison Hill Elementary School brings a theatrical flair to this performing arts magnet school. The curriculum is unique because the school models all of its learning, even traditional core subjects, through interactions with the arts.
To address overcrowding and improve learning at the school, Fanning Howey designed a new drama and dance room, a maker space, a gathering space and additional classrooms. A small addition at the entrance provides dramatic views into a new community/performance space. Inside, students enjoy updated building systems and modernized spaces that inspire and delight, while dovetailing perfectly with the existing building. COMPLEX EXPERIENCE
Zionsville High School Activity Center
Zionsville, IN
When Zionsville Community Schools wanted to expand its high school to include a new field house, Fanning Howey designed an addition that is more than a place for recreation.
The expansion space includes a large commons area and a learning center to support the new field house, weight and fitness facilities. The commons is ideal for group meetings, athletic team gatherings and surge space for athletic events. A new entrance provides students with direct access to the Activity Center.
The use of a very economical load bearing insulated concrete wall panel system yielded additional budget flexibility. Fanning Howey designers used these savings to develop targeted renovations to convert underutilized interior space within the high school into a lecture hall, vocal and instrumental studios and additional classroom space within the overall project budget.

Natatoriums
You don’t need to be a world-class swimmer to enjoy swimming. That’s why we design pools that work for everyone.
Fanning Howey designs facilities that are more than just sports venues. They are classrooms, community centers and therapy labs. To accomplish this, we collaborate with all stakeholders – from swim coaches to teachers to community leaders.
Fanning Howey designers think big, while our consultant partners get into the details. We use tank and gutter design to maximize swimmer performance. Our designs also use the latest in energy efficient and low-maintenance systems. As a result, both students and facilities staff are able to achieve more.
Fanning Howey’s experience includes more than 80 pools and natatoriums, including new and renovated facilities across the country.
Carmel High School Natatorium
Carmel, IN
Carmel High School’s new natatorium, in concert with renovations to the existing pool, will provide a complex to better serve students, the community and top-tier competition.
This expansion more than doubles the available water surface for swimming programs that continue to grow in the Carmel community. The new expanded entrance is truly the second main entrance to the high school, welcoming students arriving from the trail and parking lots to the north as well as athletes and spectators for events in the natatorium, fieldhouse and other athletic facilities.
The competition pool is designed to serve the needs of Carmel’s record-breaking swim program. A fully recessed gutter, a flat pool floor with 8-foot depth exceeding FINA and USA Swimming standards for entry safety, 25-meter width and cooler water temperature ensures this will be one of the fastest pools in the nation.

For 30 years, Fanning
Howey has helped Hamilton Southeastern Schools meet the needs of its rapidly growing population.
The modernization of Hamilton Southeastern High School included renovation of the existing natatorium to transform a 25-yard pool into a 50-meter pool.
The design team’s cost-effective approach required the existing pool to be extended, rather than building a new pool in its place. Designers worked with the structural engineer to create a shoring plan for removal of the north exterior wall and end wall of the pool tank. Installation of the pool extension and new wall was orchestrated carefully by architects and contractors, resulting in a cost-effective and high-performance pool for one of the state of Indiana’s best swimming programs.
