The year is still young, but our City has seen one of its most exciting starts to the year.
In a few short months Council hosted many successful free family friendly events including the Seniors Concert, Australia Day, Lunar New Year and our spectacular New Year’s Eve event Illuminate.
We have continued to improve the amenity of our City, and have built, or started to build, more super parks and other major projects.
Our next big event is the Bring It On! Festival for young people. Council invests in, and celebrates our young people because they are the future of our City. Come join us at the event, being held at Fairfield Showground on 13 April, 2pm-8pm.
Also to celebrate our young people, I will present the annual Mayor’s Youth Achievement Awards in June. There have been some truly inspirational young people over the years to win these awards.
I encourage you to nominate any young person up to 24 years of age who you believe has excelled and/or made our City an even better place to live.
We are also continuing our major projects that are great, not only for young people, but anyone who wants to get active.
We recently opened the $4 million Avenel Park in Canley Vale with a fitness and skating area, the revamped 50-metre outdoor pool at Fairfield Leisure Centre and two full-size synthetic futsal courts and 17 multi sport outdoor courts at Endeavour Sports Park.
Follow me on @FairfieldMayor @FC.FrankCarbone
Works continue at Endeavour Sports Park to also bring you two more synthetic all-weather grass fields with lighting and another five renewed grass sportsfields with 100 lux lighting for night-time training. Planning and detailed design for a Fairfield Showground events centre is also forging ahead.
This is in addition to the tens of millions of dollars being invested into our local roads, footpaths, kerb and guttering, neighbourhood playgrounds and outdoor fitness equipment.
Our free events and infrastructure works are investments into what matters to you and makes our City an even greater place to live, work, play and raise a family.

Exciting plans are underway for a new destination playground at Brenan Park, which will see the popular Smithfield sports field provide endless opportunities for adventurous play and imaginative exploration.
In addition to the play equipment, designs also include shaded tree cover, seated picnic spots and ample green space and landscaping to provide a pleasant and inviting environment for all.
The playground, made possible by a $6 million NSW Government Western Sydney Infrastructure Grant, will appeal to all ages and abilities featuring a climbing tower, water play, trampolines, spinners, and more. Accessibility will be a key focus, with plans to include inclusive play equipment, ensuring every child can enjoy the space.
Construction is anticipated to commence in September.

Design is underway for the new Fairfield Showground Community and Event Centre, part-funded by a $28 million contribution from the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program, and it’s shaping up to be something spectacular!
The state-of-the-art facility is set to become a hub for locals and visitors, providing a versatile space for exhibitions, performances, community and sporting events, cultural activities, and social gatherings.
Council continues to upgrade our City's detention basins to help protect properties in the event of flooding.
Current upgrade works at Powhatan Park are scheduled for completion at the end of the year, while works at Stockdale Park in Abbotsbury are currently underway .
These are critical upgrades to improve measures against property damage in the event of flooding.

Features include a range of modern amenities, including an exhibition hall and large stage, multipurpose indoor sport courts, large foyer, and an openair courtyard and covered forecourt for smaller events. Once completed, the new development will provide a much-needed space for connection, celebration, performance, and creativity in Fairfield City.
Construction is anticipated to commence in 2026.
Detention basins hold excess stormwater during heavy rain and release it slowly into the creeks, avoiding flash flooding of the creek system.
The works, jointly funded by Council and the Federal Government, will see increased water holding capacity, bringing our detention basins into line with contemporary State Government requirements.

The Fairfield City Mayor’s Youth Achievement Awards recognise local young people and groups that champion excellence in the sports, arts, business, humanitarian, and community activism arenas. Each year, winners and placegetters are announced in ten categories including leadership, creative arts, sports impact, start-up talent, new beginnings, and more.
Emmanuel Asante received the Mayor’s Award in 2019 for Visual Arts. A respected artist with national exhibitions, he contributes to the community through We Are Studios and the Arts Advisory Committee.
Born in Ghana, he migrated to Australia in 2015 and now lives in Fairfield. His art addresses migration struggles, social marginalisation, and themes of personal subjectivity and empowerment. His work blends Ghanaian culture, traditional patterns, and folktales.
He proudly calls Fairfield home: : “(It) is safe and people here are very friendly and nice,” he said. “My experience as a young person in Fairfield City was a joyous one. Going for strolls in parks was something I enjoyed doing and I would see families playing games. I sometimes got invited to join them to play footy or volleyball.”
You can follow Emmanuel on Instagram: @emmanuel.asante.art.
Nominations for the 2025 Fairfield City Mayor’s Youth Achievement Awards open May. Winners will be announced at a special presentation in June.

This April marks the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War's end, where Australian and Vietnamese soldiers fought together. From 1962 to 1975, around 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam, with over 500 killed and 3,000 injured. Australian forces also assisted in evacuating Vietnamese citizens and humanitarian efforts in 1975. The Vietnamese were the first major Asian immigrant group to settle in Australia, marking the start of multiculturalism.
To mark this important anniversary, Council will install special commemorative street banners across the City and in Dutton Plaza later this month.
