MIAMI ART WEEK

Another Year of Culture Faena Art announced its public programming for Miami Art Week 2023, presenting four major installations by artists Sebastian Errazuriz, Beeple, and Kelly Breez; collectively titled ‘Spaces of Influence: Shaping Community in the Modern World.’

MAZE: JOURNEY THROUGH THE ALGORITHMIC SELF BY SEBASTIAN ERRAZURZ

This year’s exhibition unites four provocative installations across the Faena District that explore the tension between community and individuality, technology and tradition, power, and grassroots. From the AI-generated pathways of Sebastian Errazuriz’s Maze to the nostalgic corners of Kelly Breez’s Dirt’s Dive or Beeple’s S.2122, culminating in the epic struggle depicted in Battle of the Corporate Nations, this collective showcase invites viewers to

navigate and question the evolving landscapes that define our sense of community in a rapidly changing world. Liene Bosquê’s Before Miami Design Preservation League, a sitespecific installation representing the skyline of demolished buildings in Miami Beach before the ‘80s, will also be exhibited as part of No Vacancy, a program of the The City of Miami Beach, The Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority, and The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau.

MAZE: JOURNEY THROUGH THE ALGORITHMIC SELF BY SEBASTIAN ERRAZURIZ

Faena Art presents a monumental immersive public artwork created by multidisciplinary artist Sebastian Errazuriz. The sand-covered labyrinth has been designed intentionally for those not to get lost but to find themselves. Conceived as a space to spark conversations regarding society’s upcoming technological and environmental challenges,

the installation coincides with the launch of Errazuriz’s new book of the same name, which is a series of questions and answers designed to raise awareness of the opportunities and threats we face with the rise of artificial intelligence. “I ultimately believe artificial intelligence is the most significant transformative development in human history— more important than the printing press, the industrial revolution, and the internet,” he explained. “As such, it’s up to us to decide how it

will affect the fate of humanity.” At the center of the maze, visitors find a wide-open space, like a small plaza, where they can gather, contemplate, and engage in meaningful conversations. There will also be a QR code to download a free copy of his book. In addition, the artist will host a series of panel talks on AI and its transformative role for the creative industries at the hotel during Miami Art Week. “Throughout the decades, it has been writers, filmmakers, visual artists, etc., that have been capable of imagining future scenarios and challenges in a way that can move the needle in terms of the public opinion,” he said. “I believe creators today have a responsibility to participate in the discussion surrounding technology.” ‘BATTLE OF THE CORPORATE NATIONS’ BY SEBASTIAN ERRAZURIZ

Errazuriz will also display Battle of the Corporate Nations at Faena Beach. The poured marble and bronze sculpture, inspired by a previous series he developed in 2017 entitled The Beginning of The End, explores the reality that corporations have surpassed the financial reserves of small to medium countries and have started wielding substantial political power and influence. The artist, who has been participating in Art Basel for nearly 20 years, is honored to work with Faena Art on one of the biggest public artworks destined for Miami this year. “It’s extraordinary how Faena Art uses its platform to elevate South American artists in Miami, Latin America’s cultural capital, presenting our work sideby-side. It’s a beautiful moment.” ‘DIRT’S DIVE’ BY KELLY BREEZ

Born-and-bred Floridian Kelly Breez will launch Dirt’s Dive at the Project Room, featuring an immersive installation that pays homage to the long-lost bar scene of old South Florida. The artwork calls attention to a disappearing type of establishment where one can encounter characters such as the old Florida fisherman—someone who tells tales of times past filled with color and wisdom. “South Florida and particularly Miami is seeing this massive influx of new development that is quickly erasing old haunts full of character,” said Breez. Bars have always been a communal space where everyday life unfolds, relationships begin and end, business deals are made and broken. Dive bars speak particularly to Breez because they have an authentic, unpretentious milieu typically filled with intriguing relics. “I’m really looking forward to creating a space that feels imbued with the same sense of full-body chill and wonder as some of my favorite spots like Happy’s, and the now shuttered Jimbo’s,” explained Breez, who drew on inspiration from works like Ed Kienholz’s ‘The Beanery’ and posters from Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. “It’s fun to look at 2D work during Art Week, but

6

it’s always great to feel like you’re a part of a show.” Visitors can expect a diorama of sorts showcasing cutout figures, found objects and deep-rooted nostalgia. Presenting this exhibition during Miami Art Week in the middle of all the glitz and glamour adds a sharp element of humor, highlighting the artist’s observations of the absurd. “I would really love it if Dirt’s Dive made people think twice about how important history is within a community. If someone or something is ‘old’ it means it’s even more interesting, allknowing, and worth preserving.” ‘S.2122’ BY BEEPLE PRESENTED BY THE REEFLINE WITH FAENA ART

In a climate change-themed narrative, Beeple’s 3D animations manifest a new form of storytelling that mesmerizingly unfolds on screen, evoking the sensation of peering into a futuristic slice of sci-fi worlds he frequently portrays in his art. The piece, titled S.2122, portrays a futuristic building complex, adorned with hovering drones and mushrooms, encapsulated in a gradually rising sea of water. Beeple, known offstage as Mike Winkelmann, ingeniously intertwines the digital with the tangible, controlling and adapting the displayed design within the sculpture. “Much like The Reefline, which bridges the realms of marine conservation with art, I have planned the evolution of S.2122: every 5 years, the water level inside this virtual ecosystem will rise by a quarter, leading to the entire structure being engulfed in a span of 25 years. The inhabitants will evolve and adapt, symbolizing not just the resilience of humanity in the face of climate change, but also our inherent ability to thrive amidst adversities,” commented Beeple.

FAENA CULTURE

The Faena Questionnaire: Francis Mallmann Our rendition of the Proust Questionnaire is our unique take on the famous parlor game that gained popularity, although it was not originally created, by Marcel Proust, the renowned French essayist and novelist. Proust held the belief that by responding to these questions, individuals unveil their genuine essence.

Dreaming dreams, no mortal ever dared to dream before –Edgar Allan Poe Our master of seven fires, Francis Mallmann, hailing from the Bariloche region of Patagonia, stands as South America’s most celebrated chef. Raised in a household where the essence of cooking revolved around everlasting fires, Mallmann’s childhood kindled a deep fascination for the culinary arts. This early passion led him

10

to pursue formal training in the realm of French cooking. Despite achieving acclaim in the culinary world, Mallmann eventually found himself disenchanted with the world of fine dining. Restlessness drove him back to his origins—cooking with the primal element of fire. He merged French techniques with this elemental approach, intensifying and enriching the flavors and textures of his creations. Embracing simplicity, he often relies on just a handful of ingredients

and concise cooking methods. With Mallmann at its helm, Los Fuegos offers an authentic South American dining experience, complete with an outdoor fire kitchen, rooted in the traditional asado (outdoor barbecues). The fire kitchen has been custom designed by the renowned chef to fuse his many fire-cooking techniques into one extraordinary kitchen, and it is the first of its kind in an urban environment. Mallmann has designed a large, custom-built

wood oven, the “piano,” a grandscale grill of bespoke design that is being crafted in Texas, planchas and hooks from which to hang fish and meat from, as well as a section dedicated solely to cooking in ashes. Additionally, Mallmann has designed special cooking utensils exclusively for the Faena fire kitchen made from materials ranging from copper, wood and iron to porcelain, marble and stainless steel.

PAO & EL SECRETO OMAK ASE BY PAUL QUI

Full of Flavor If you’re craving the perfect bite, look no further than Pao by Paul Qui. The Asian-inflected restaurant recently added an entirely new section of Pao Bites and nigiris to the menu.

Must-eats include the Ora King salmon with shishito peppers and lemongrass; cured and coldsmoked Hamachi Jamon with slices of fresh cantaloupe; and Shiso Tempura. “We wanted the tempura to be on the lighter side. It has charred onion crème fraiche and smoked trout roe on top, which gives a little bit of a smoky taste,” said Chef de Cuisine Paulina Ornelas. “Many of our bites and nigiris are inspired by Japanese cuisine, but you’ll also find a touch of Qui’s Filipino heritage in dishes like the Kare Kare Macaroon, topped with foie gras—kare is a peanut sauce typically eaten with braised oxtail in the Philippines.” The nigiris offer a little taste of the omakase experience at Faena’s El Secreto speakeasy. “It showcases

some of the best quality fish flown in from Japan that are paired with ingredients we ferment in-house like Pao’s Yuzukosho featuring fresnos and strawberries,” she added. Be sure to order Ornelas’ all-time favorite: the eggplant nigiri roasted with a farro miso butter and lime gel. “We are also focusing on vegan and vegetarian options, adding more flavor to enhance seasonal vegetables.” Meat lovers shouldn’t miss the Wagyu Short Rib Nigiri. The beef is smoked, then tenderized for 72 hours at a very low temperature for a melt-in-your-mouth consistency. “We also grill a slice of short rib that’s finished with fresh wasabi root over rise. It’s simple but packed with flavor,” she said.

Trust the Chef Every few months, chef Erik Melendez evolves the omakase offerings at El Secreto with new in-season ingredients to ensure the menu is always full of secrets and surprises.

Newly added dishes for fall and winter include a Peruvianstyle ceviche made with suzuki (a Japanese seabass) bathed in leche de tigre sauce and seasoned with aji, pumpkin seeds, apples and Japanese sweet potato. “A lot of my inspiration comes from trying to combine Japanese ingredients and techniques with my Hispanic heritage,” said Melendez. Another ode to autumn is the scallop crudo dish. Sourcing the seafood from Hokkaido Japan, Melendez pairs it a pomegranate vinegar, gooseberry relish, and crispy shallots topped

with a drizzling of extra virgin olive oil. There’s also a new smoked sawara (Spanish mackerel) dish that is cold smoked in-house with applewood, then combined with Asian pears, golden raisins, blood oranges, pine nuts, and finished off with san bai zu, a mix of vinegar and orange oil. “This one really reminds me of Thanksgiving when you stuff your plate with a little bit of everything,” he said. “The smokiness of the fish almost tastes like ham, and you have the freshness of the sweet fruit with the pine nuts, adding a nice texture.”

LA CAVA

La Cava A hidden gem tucked inside Faena Miami Beach, La Cava is an immersive wine room hosting special candlelit events paired with a carefully curated collection of 3,000 wine bottles showcasing varietals from every corner of the globe.

FE AT U R ED C O C K TA I L

Garden Party The Garden Party is Faena’s easy-to-drink version of a traditional Vodka Soda mixed with Grey Goose vodka, muddled cucumber and a sprig of just-picked mint. The Vodka Soda is a classic cocktail known for its simplicity and refreshing taste. Its history can be traced back to the mid-20th century when vodka started gaining popularity in the United States. During this time, cocktails like the Martini and Old Fashioned dominated the scene, but people began seeking lighter options. The Vodka Soda emerged as the perfect answer, blending just two primary ingredients: vodka and soda water. The drink’s straightforward preparation and clean profile made it a hit. Faena honors the cocktail’s uncomplicated elegance and timeless appeal with its choice of vodka distilled from winter wheat in France, the gastronomic capital of the world.

“The showpiece is our 20seat dining table from designer Frank Pollaro’s collection created in collaboration with actor Brad Pitt,” said Marko Karovic, Faena’s head sommelier. Guests at the table have access to supreme vintages— some dating back to the 1940s. “We carry Château Latour 1982, considered by all wine critics to be one of the best ever,” said Karovic. Other notables include Château Haut Brion 1989, Château Haut Brion 1989 and Screaming Eagle 2007. But La Cava offers more than a taste of rare wines. Faena is partnering with Louis XIII, a

18

cognac produced by Rémy Martin, to give spirits enthusiasts a chance to sample one of the most coveted cognacs in the world. Faena offers nine lockers to rent with different quantities of the French brandy ranging from a 750ml to magnum bottles. Karovic himself greets guests and provides whiteglove pours showcasing specialty glassware engraved with the client’s initials. “Guests are usually celebrating an important milestone or toasting an important business deal,” he explained. The wine cellar is also stocked with Faena’s private label wines produced in Mendoza,

Argentina, one of the top wine capitals of the world. Collaborating with acclaimed winemaker Marcelo Pelleriti, Faena produces five labels, including a Malbec Rosé, Torrontés, Chardonnay, Classic Malbec, and Gran Malbec—a special selection aged for 18 months in French oak. The wines are available throughout the Faena District, including its restaurants and bars as well as Faena Theater and in-room minibars. “We’re also about to launch a Sauvignon XXXVis, a single-vineyard vintage from Alta Vista, which will be one of Faena’s finest.”

“Art Basel is the crown jewel of Miami’s event calendar,” said James Gardner, founder of Gitano. “I have been coming for years and have seen it grow and evolve. I love that art is at the center, but it’s also about design, fashion, culture, music, food, and drink—everything we love!” For the last couple of years, Gitano has partnered with young up-and-coming artists like the Brazilian Artist Joao Incerti, who painted a gorgeous, bohemian mural on-property. ‘We always throw fun events during the week for fashionable insiders like supermodel Jodan Barret’s birthday party or

Tulest Factory’s art and design preview party,” Gardner explained. Having made a name for himself in the fashion industry before launching the first Gitano outpost in the tropical jungles of Tulum, Gardner is no stranger to crafting beautiful things. “Gitano has been visualized through a fashion lens. It is a platform for art, artists, and all creative beings to celebrate the art of food and cocktails, the art of style and design, and the art of pleasure,” he said. “It’s my living, breathing multisensory oeuvre oozing with gypsy spirit, sparkling glamour and Yucatán deliciousness.”

A New Era of Cabaret Join us on an intoxicating journey into the multiverse with Faena Theater’s acclaimed contemporary cabaret Allura! “This show moves people because good music always hits the soul,” said Rocky Lanes, the star of Allura, Faena Theater’s highoctane cabaret, which has been extended through the winter season due to popular demand. “Allura is different from any show we’ve ever done,” says Shane Borth, the music director of Quixotic, the performance art collective behind the show. “It focuses heavily on music, technology, and every style of dance you can imagine. It’s still very much a cabaret but very sexy, very modern, and very shiny. There’s a lot of disco, funk and ‘80s vibes.” Lanes, who came from New York City’s The Box, showcases her powerhouse vocals

alongside Cuban guitarist Alberto Torres, performing a catalog of reimagined hits from Elvis and Abba to Grimes and Janelle Monae. “We do a lot of improvising on stage, which keeps the show fresh and entertaining,” she said. This isn’t the kind of performance that you sit and passively receive. “The show has a high-energy party vibe,” said choreographer Milena Straczynski, who spellbinds the audience with an aerial number atop a bellhop cart and perhaps the sexiest striptease you will ever see. “We really want to create an atmosphere that makes people jump out of their seats and dance with us by the end of the show.”
