“How do we hear the dead?” This is the unanswerable question posed by Christina Pettersson in Take This Waltz, the newest installation at the Faena Art Project Room. Pettersson is an artist whose imagination dives deep under the surface, the better to interrogate the biggest and most provocative ideas.

Born in Stockholm, then transplanted to Miami where she’s lived most of her life, Pettersson is a dedicated student of Miami’s cultural and environmental history. Her work centers on the city, both its achievements and its losses. Her lengthy résumé includes exhibits

Take This Waltz

Christina Pettersson brings Take This Waltz, a gothic exploration of Miami’s environment, mythology, and decline, to the Faena Art’s Project Room.

at the country’s most prestigious museums, from Birmingham to Baltimore, and her work is in major national collections. Still, her central theme is always the unique landscapes, traditions, quirks, and myths of Florida.

Take This Waltz is both a celebration of Miami and an exploration of its dark side. A gothic, carnivalesque masquerade of wildcats and sea birds, mangroves and palmettos, the video installation brings this funeral procession to life. An elegy to the plants and animals that used to occupy the space the city was built on, a

mourning of the dead, but at the same time an invitation to enter into that world and get to know it.

Pettersson’s loyalty is to the bygone, but she invites you to join her in falling in love— or even just fascination—with the past, ghosts, and all.

“Years from now, when Florida’s marshy Everglades are buried under liters of salt and sea, Christina Pettersson’s work will be its haunting tombstone,” said arts and culture journalist Nicole Martinez.

The Spirit of Spring

Tierra Santa Healing House taps into the potential of spring with a calendar of community-driven events that nurture fresh beginnings, spur spiritual growth, and welcome abundance in all its forms.

On February 26, join Tierra Santa and Modern Om for the launch of Spiritual Sundays, a monthly gathering that begins with a Twin Hearts Meditation from 3 pm to 4 pm at the spa studio. Afterward, enjoy healthy bites and fresh juices in the Tierra Santa Living Room, where guests can socialize while participating in aura, tarot, or astrology readings. From 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, seasoned facilitators will lead an interactive class focused on wellness practices like breathwork or mantras before heading to the Faena Screening Room for a live concert. “We want to create meaningful opportunities for the wellness-minded community to connect and thrive,” said spa director Agustina Caminos.

Biohacker Julia Smila blends cutting-edge technology and holistic methodologies to teach people how to optimize their health, reduce stress and prevent disease. On March 10, Smila will host an event dedicated to ultimate wellness with a handful of half-hour sessions that offer technological solutions that shift health toward 100% functionality. Guests will experience a recharge session with NuCalm, a science-backed system using several modalities. One of these includes binaural music that stimulates the brain to convert beta waves into alpha and theta waves, which are lower frequency states associated with rest, sleep, meditation, and creativity. Guests will also have the opportunity to explore Healy, a

portable microcurrent device that delivers up to 250,000 frequencies to balance the body’s bioenergetic field. The brain-skin connection will be discussed by the CEO and founder of Younge Goose, the world’s first biohacking skincare company using NAD+, a molecule that ensures proper cell function.

At the end of March, Caminos will lead a Basic Pranic Healing Workshop developed by the Filipino scientist Master Choa Kok Sui. On March 26, 27, and 28, practitioners will learn how to remove stagnant and unwanted energies in the aura and chakras, cultivate breathing techniques, and simple methods for stress management that foster strength and vitality.

On March 27, join Bistrong at Tierra Santa for the launch event of the Miami Sound Institute, which will include a discussion on the core philosophy and methodologies of the training as well as a live sound healing experience. “I want my students to take this craft out into the real world, into their communities, schools, hospitals, so that people can tap into the power of relaxing,” said Bistrong.

To take advantage of the new moon energy and a solar eclipse happening on April 20, head to the Mammoth Garden for an intention setting cacao ceremony followed by mindful movement, breathwork, sound healing, and a concert from singer Emilia Garth.

Up In The Air

Choreographer Milena Straczynski lifts dance off the stage and defies gravity in Allura, Faena Theater’s transfixing cabaret from performance art collective Quixotic.

Leave your preconceptions at the door—those are for gallery shows, dance recitals, theater performances, and concerts. Allura starts from somewhere else entirely; it challenges expectations and pushes boundaries at every turn. Either by using lighting and projections to transport the audience to another realm or sending a stage’s worth of props (luggage and a bellhop cart!) up into the air for a mesmerizing aerial dance that appears to break the rules of gravity. Nothing is what it seems.

At the heart of the cabaret is the dynamic choreography from Milena Straczynski. A true multi-hyphenate, Straczynski is an aerialist, singer, and dancer that also performs several vignettes in the show. When conceptualizing the movement that would bring the show to life, she wanted to ensure that the audience could “disconnect from the outside world and pop into our world of entertainment and imagination.” This meant stringing together influences from modern dance, partnered performance, ballet, and almost

primal movements. Coordinating them all with the one-of-akind score—a mix of 1970s and 80s electronic sounds blended invisibly into super-contemporary tunes, as well as soul, rock, and R&B from MC Rocky Lanes.

Straczynski’s inspiration for the choreography and acrobatics comes from an eclectic array of sources, running the gamut from Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies to the Prince and Paula Abdul music videos she grew up watching. And from a range of people, too, like her opera singer mother, circus performer father, and Cirque du Soleil aerialist husband. Look carefully, and you can see each of these elements play its part in Allura, adapted by Straczynski’s careful hand.

This isn’t the kind of performance that you sit and passively receive. It’s high energy all the way. “This show focuses more on being a party vibe,” says Straczynski. “We really wanted people to experience an atmosphere that makes them jump out of their seats and dance with us by the end of the show.”

Fresh Catch

Scallops from Maine, sea urchins from Santa Barbara, Gulf Coast snapper—each one arrives via a vendor that Qui has personally vetted. He’s built his reputation on seafood. And the latest additions to the Pao menu takes this passion to another level.

Three seafood towers join the carefully curated menu of dishes inspired by Filipino, Spanish, Japanese, and French culinary traditions. “They are the cherry on top of our seafood

program at Pao,” explained Qui. The Ocean Tower, he noted, focuses on the best fin fish we can get inhouse. It’s a revelation of freshness and flavor, a mélange of salmon, akami, otoro, and hamachi. The Coral Tower, a masterful creation of Norwegian king crab, king crab salad, east and west coast oysters, and wild Australian prawns, “is the best shellfish, from large wild tiger prawns to responsibly sourced king crab and oysters.” A third tower, the Melody, combines Ocean

and Coral into what Qui declares to be “the best of both worlds.”

The towers are a paradigm of carefully calibrated restraint following a simple playbook: source the very best seafood and let the flavor do the rest. However, a quick dip into Qui’s fermented strawberry mignonette or spicy morita butter is never discouraged. And with a dedicated shucker, it’s impossible to get closer to the source without a fishing rod in hand. We prefer a martini.

10
When it comes to seafood, sourcing is everything. When it comes to seafood towers, where the offerings are unadulterated by heavy sauces or marinades, sourcing is everything and then some. At Pao, James Beard Award-winning chef Paul Qui is obsessed, in the best possible way, with where his seafood comes from.

The Secret Ingredient

The 16-course tasting menu is now helmed by fresh talent Qui handpicked himself. “I’m excited to introduce chef Erik Melendez and chef Liu Huang. Both have been trained by the best in the business, including chefs Vu Le and Masatomo Hamaya, my head sushi chefs at Uchi,” he said. “I am looking forward to seeing what this collaboration brings.” Whatever it is, it’s sure to come with an element of surprise, a common theme at El Secreto, a speakeasy six-seat bar wrapped in slick black marble and Art Deco brass finishings.

Before the gastronomic journey begins, diners receive expert guidance in choosing beverage pairings for the evening. “We have an amazing Japanese sake program with super rare collectibles like bottles of

Kikiusui Kuramitsu Junmai and Noguchi Noahiko 01 Junmai that are typically hard to get your hands on,” said El Secreto’s sommelier Josh Kasumovic.

Ninety percent of the menu’s fish is flown in fresh from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market several times weekly, while domestic fish is sourced from Inland Lobster and Truefin Seafood, including the Mere Point Oysters and bluefin tuna, and prepared by the chefs behind the bar. In addition to a parade of nigiri courses and hand rolls, Chef Qui highlights the menu’s chawanmushi, a savory egg custard dish. “It’s so basic in a Japanese household but so difficult to get right,” he said. “At El Secreto, we achieve the perfect texture and elevate it with a generous amount of Golden Osetra Caviar.”

11
“Our focus at El Secreto is simply to bring the best products from the world to this intimate omakase experience,” said chef Paul Qui.

The Art of the Flame

In addition to participating at the festival’s cornerstone Best of the Best event, foodies can head to Faena’s Los Fuegos restaurant, where incomparable grillmaster and “Chef’s Table” star, Francis Mallmann, will be firing up his flame-cooked specialties. A bounty of fire-roasted fare will be served using traditional Patagonian cooking techniques from his signature iron dome, where ingredients like whole cabbage, cauliflower, bonein ribeye, and pineapples are hung over a live-fire and slow-cooked for hours. Out of a wood oven comes cheese empanadas stuffed with gouda, port salut, mozzarella, oregano, and caramelized onion; prime beef empanadas and artichokes smothered in sesame yogurt and sourdough breadcrumbs; and an entrée of whole Branzino flavored with a gremolata sauce. Mallmann also uses a “rescoldo” method to cook a bevy of vegetables by submerging them in glowing embers. The result? Mouthwatering dishes like beets carpaccio with pistachio yogurt, garlic chips, and pistachio crumble; eggplant with tomato chutney and tahini; and sweet potatoes spread with brown butter. Other dishes showcasing the chef’s mastery of the flame include wood-fired tuna with stracciatella cheese, crispy buckwheat, and chermoula; beef tartare with potatoes anna and black truffle vinaigrette; and butternut squash with parmesan fonduta, salsa verde, and Sicilian pistachio. The feast culminates in a hanging pineapple tarte tatin with dulce de leche and homemade Stracciatella ice cream.

LOS FUEGOS BY FRANCIS MALLMANN

“The programming in the Living Room has a lot of variety in terms of music,” said Alejandro Lista, Faena’s live Entertainment Director. “There’s different moods and different vibes depending on the day. We’ve got something for everyone.”

For Valentine’s Day, Lista conceived distinct musical experiences across Faena’s venues, from a romantic string quartet performing for a handful of intimate tables in the Mammoth Garden to a four-piece band in the candlelight Tree of Life bar. In the Living Room , crooner Louis Amanti kicks off the evening with a big brass band, and musical artist Sameya will bring it home with a soulful performance.

Spring Into Rhythm

“We’re hoping to bring Sameya on as a regular act because the crowd loves her,” said Lista. “She has such a powerful voice and presence on stage.” Most people recognize the artist from her recurring role as Jane Hayward in the sixth season of Glee and her theater performances, including Lion King, Book of Mormon, and Hamilton. At Faena , Sameya delivers a mix of R&B, funk, pop, and soul with a magnetic attitude that’s made her a star. Other artists on the talentpacked roster include a monthly show from Brendan O’Hara, who performs on guitar and keyboard and uses vocals with live-looping technology to create his original

sound of roots-rock-hip-hop and postmodern soul. “He’s a one-manshow, but he’ll move you even more than a full band,” noted Lista.

This spring, the Sir Portela Band will light up Saturday nights with their neo-funk and Latin soul jams. “They are an extremely high-energy band that gets everyone up and dancing,” Lista explained. Elvis fans will want to come early on Saturday nights to catch Louis Amanti perform a repertoire of the King Of Rock ’n‘ Roll’s most beloved hits with jazz and swing overtones, as well as some of the singersongwriter’s original music. “We are constantly innovating to keep it fresh and exciting,” said Lista.

French Warrior

Cocktail legend has it that the classic French 75 cocktail was invented by a band of English soldiers stationed in France during the First World War. The name comes from the French 75-millimeter light field gun, one of the deadliest weapons around at the time, a nod to the libation’s ability to hit its target with remarkable precision. Over the years, the French 75 has undergone numerous iterations, swapping out gin for cognac and jumping from a Nick and Nora glass to a champagne flute.

Faena’s version of the classic libation, dubbed French Warrior, mixes Bombay Sapphire for its fresh citrus notes and lively juniper character. It is topped off with G.H.Mumm Grand Cordon Brut Champagne for the perfect balance of complex and elegant aromas.

Book a spring reset at Casa Faena, Miami Beach’s most charming boutique hotel. An intimate Spanish Colonial gem just steps from the beach; Casa Faena houses Mediterranean-chic guest rooms, an artfilled atrium, and the see-and-be-seen GITANO restaurant and rooftop bar.

A tropical oasis of lush greenery and bohemian brio, GITANO brings an air of Tulum to South Beach with delicious food, Latin-leaning libations, and spirited diversion. “We’re traveling the world and connecting a funloving healthy-living community,” said founder James Gardner.

“The rooftop is spectacular at sunset,” Gardner noted. “We call it the ‘Golden Hour’ because there’s a relaxed vibe, but it’s also fun.” In striped Bedouin-style tipis, guests’ tipple mezcal elixirs like the piquant Jungle Fever, muddled with cilantro, chili, and lime. Other crowd favorites include the Gypsy Disco 75 cocktail, GITANO’s twist on the French 75 with rosé champagne, StGermain, and Ély vodka served up with a fresh raspberry garnish. “And of course, there’s always our iconic GITANO Margarita, which brings a sense of familiarity and home, whether you’re with us in Tulum, New York, or Miami.”

With his new book, Architecture of Being, Alan Faena shares with the world the guiding principles that have shaped his own journey and the urban marvels he’s created.

Architecture of Being

A COLLECTION OF INTIMATE REFLECTIONS

The Path of a life involves walking a straight line from our heart to take possession of our Being. Meaningful dreams generate ideas to build a Path to match our potential. The idea is the key that opens the door to the speed of the whole.

Making ideas into material reality is the most daring leap toward realizing our dream Path. Every true Path is sustained by the wisdom of one’s own Being. The signs of this tension are the battles of evolution between what we know and what we don’t know about ourselves. The mind only sees what it recognizes and aligns itself with the pace of its own becoming. But the alchemy of the Path is built in solitude and Silence, for the mind has to absorb the unknown if it’s to transcend itself. We evolve by transforming ideas, and this practice eventually transforms us.
