In this issue, we delve a bit deeper into the topic of well-being. Feeling whole (our mantra and manifestation) is about finding inner peace and contentment, where all aspects of our lives (read more about the eight pillars of wellness in our pages) align. The month is calling for embracing all parts of yourself, the good and the bad, and finding a state of being that transcends perfection and praises selfacceptance, with an opportunity to cultivate good habits. We bring an explanation of the true meaning of wellness, along with the best foot and manicure care one can have on the island (you will have to read to find out where), as well as regional beauty brands that focus on sustainable products.
Fashion is about looking good, which is also a way of improving your self-esteem. With AW2025 collections now in shops, we've selected a few styles that caught our attention, including the big comeback of skinny trousers and the timeless versatility of the white shirt.
For me, travelling is a way of taking care of myself. Exploring new places helps me re-energise and reset. I was lucky to stay at Our Habitas Ras Abrouq, a unique desert getaway just a short drive from Doha, Qatar. However, I also jumped at the opportunity to travel to Seychelles. In Mahé, I relaxed at Constance Ephelia, and in Praslin, I unwound at Constance Lemuria. Don't miss out on uncovering these incredible destinations with me.
Good food improves anyone's mood. This month, we embarked on two delectable food journeys. We had a tricultural experience (embracing Brazilian, Peruvian and Japanese cuisines) at SUSHISAMBA, Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour, and enjoyed a Mediterranean brunch at Masso, Palmyard Hotel. We end our publication with a stylish drive behind the wheel of the Porsche Panamera Manufacturer Edition – a girl needs to thrive!

This month, we chose to highlight a clothing piece that caught our eye: the cropped blazer
Tuxedo-inspired design is Celine’s take on this garment. A smart choice for those seeking a lightweight cover for their evening wear – we adore anything chic and elegant.
This Loro Piana outfit resembles the Spanish bullfighter’s clothes with an embellished short jacket, a cute way to add an interesting touch to formal attire.
Miu Miu’s version has shorter sleeves in a structured silhouette – it works well as a nice add-on to plain tees and jeans.
The regional brand Onori has an artsy approach. This green number adds an eye-catching detail to plain outfits.
With a less formal approach, Hermès bets on a cropped jacket that mixes tailoring with a sporty touch for a nice twist.
Stripes are a popular pattern choice in the fashion world. The visual effect is what makes this motif thrive: vertical designs are known for adding height and elegance, horizontal lines provide balance and stability, while diagonal columns create dynamism and energy.

Leggings and tight pants have returned to the fashion scene (were they ever out?). We spotted the item styled with volume tops and knee-high boots. Are you ready to wave goodbye to your comfy baggy numbers in the name of fashion?

It’s time to put your floral Bardot dress, which still smells like sunscreen, in the back of the wardrobe and embrace winter items with their long sleeves, turtle necks and midi length. They will warm you up and put you in an elegant winter mood.
If there is a clothing item that can be called a girl’s best friend, it is the white shirt. This super versatile piece offers an array of styling options – it can be worn under dresses, help with layering and even get a touch of embellishment.
Black, white, and grey compose a palette defined by the absence of colour, focusing on variations of light and dark values. A timeless combo that exudes sophistication and minimalism.
Amid calendars & commitments, there is a pause that restores more than time.

The capsule comprises five essentials: a polo, T-shirt, tracksuit jacket, cap and trousers, all bearing the one-off GOAT insignia. A Lacoste ambassador for over eight years, Djokovic embodies the brand’s pursuit of excellence while redefining the limits of the sport. With 24 Grand Slam titles, more weeks at World No. 1 than any player, the most Grand Slam match wins and a record number of ATP Masters 1000 victories, he stands unmatched. On has launched a new campaign with Zendaya titled ‘Be Every You,’ marking the latest step in their long-term collaboration. The project explores ideas of identity and duality, with Zendaya both starring in and shaping the narrative alongside stylist Law Roach. The design adapts On’s Cloudzone silhouette, adding a sculpted midsole with CloudTec cushioning, breathable mesh and enhanced support for everyday wear. A follow-up model, the Cloudtilt Moon, arrives this month with softer construction for recovery and all-day comfort. Filmmaker Bardia Zeinali directed the campaign film, which moves through four staged environments reflecting contrasts such as chaos and calm, while photographs by Emily Lipson highlight the collection’s layered styling. Alongside footwear, the Autumn and Winter 2025 range also features versatile apparel, including a bomber jacket, bodysuit and track set.

Van Cleef & Arpels continues its fascination with nature in the Perlée Extraordinaire Fruits Enchantés collection.
Nature has always been an inspiration for Van Cleef & Arpels, and this year the maison has translated its vitality into two new creations: the Perlée Extraordinaire Fruits Enchantés Myrtille and Framboise watches. For the first time, the playful beaded aesthetic of the Perlée line meets the intricate world of métiers d’art, resulting in dials that look less like timepieces and more like works of art.
Central to these watches are the sun-kissed berries, with their curves being brought to life through façonné enamel. This technique, devised and patented by Van Cleef & Arpels in 2023, enables enamel to assume rounded, three-dimensional forms. Powder is poured into a mould, fired twice under carefully controlled temperatures, then polished, carved and glazed to achieve a luminous surface. The effect is striking: a play of volume and transparency that captures the richness of ripe fruit.
The berries sit within an ornate, round case edged with gold beads, accompanied by painted foliage against a textured gold background that forms a woodland scene. Adding to the narrative are two tiny fairies in sculpted gold, rose or white, whose diamond-set wings echo the brilliance of the gems surrounding the case. A closer look at the caseback reveals more details: a ladybird engraved for the Framboise model and a butterfly for the Myrtille. Materials differ subtly between the two watches. The Myrtille comes in a white gold case with hints of rose gold, featuring diamonds, enamel, miniature painting and a Swiss quartz movement. Meanwhile, the Framboise offers the same craft techniques in rose gold, complemented by touches of white gold. Behind these creations is the maison’s Geneva workshop, home to an enamel studio and training academy, where traditional techniques are preserved while innovations are developed. Sculpted and textured gold is used alongside enamel to add depth to the dials, with light playing across their surfaces, bringing a shift in reflections. The crafting of the golden fairies begins with a wax model, which is later shaped by hand using jewellery tools, many of which are fashioned by the artisans themselves. Once refined, the designs are moulded to ensure precision, then carefully engraved by hand again. The background gold is given a subtle texture, intensifying the interplay of light and shadow within the scene.
These watches form part of Van Cleef & Arpels’ Extraordinary Dials collection, where enamellers, engravers, lapidaries, miniature painters, stone-setters and watchmakers combine their skills. Each dial is conceived as a tiny artwork, sometimes requiring up to 300 hours to complete.
Southern Africa’s deserts, wildlife and light serve as the blueprint for Terres d’Instinct, the new High Jewellery chapter for Messika.
This year marks 20 years since Valérie Messika founded her eponymous jewellery maison and to celebrate, she has unveiled a new High Jewellery collection unlike any before. Terres d’Instinct is a body of work born from a journey through Namibia, where Valérie was struck by vast ochre landscapes, fierce light and the commanding presence of wildlife. It’s this encounter with untamed nature that forms the heartbeat of the collection.
The designs draw from the contrasts of Southern Africa, namely Namibia, Botswana and South Africa, where desert sands, mineral-rich plains and wild creatures each leave their trace. The jewellery reflects these impressions in bold ways: textured gold surfaces, deep incisions, graphic stripes and shimmering pavé replicate the landscapes and their energy. In this first chapter, 16 sets have been created, each one exploring the dialogue between raw natural forces and refinement.
One of the centrepieces is the Kalahara necklace, which features two yellow diamonds, a massive 34.92-carat fancy intense yellow, radiant-cut stone and a 3.61-carat fancy yellow, radiant-cut stone. The design incorporates 3,298 smaller diamonds totalling 103.30 carats. Beyond its scale, the piece is also modular: it can be worn as a triple-row plastron, a double-row necklace, a choker or as a pendant necklace, offering four distinct silhouettes within one creation.
The Mirage piece reflects the movement of the Sossusvlei dunes, where brushed gold surfaces and pavé diamonds form volumes that appear to ripple and settle, just like the desert’s shifting contours. In Zebra Mnyama, onyx contrasts with baguette-cut diamonds in a sharp, architectural rhythm, anchored by two shield-cut diamonds of 1.52 and 1.50 carats. Fauve interprets the strength of the lion, its brushed gold carved with claw-like marks that cut across the surface, set against the light of 2,491 diamonds weighing 70.28 carats.
For Messika, the collection is also a step into new territory. While the brand is best known for its diamond expertise, Terres d’Instinct embraces coloured gemstones for the first time. Rubies, sapphires, emeralds, spinels and garnets join the narrative, bringing a palette that mirrors Africa’s vivid hues of sunset reds, oasis greens and turquoise exotic plumage. The Divine Enigma set has even been reimagined around a 30-carat Zambian emerald, a striking emblem of this new creative chapter.
Despite this expansion into colour, diamonds remain at the centre. Cuts ranging from cushion and baguette to heart, radiant and shield are paired with an array of setting techniques, including bezel, snow and halo. Across the collection, light becomes a narrative thread, with each piece designed to highlight the brilliance and adaptability of the stones while balancing sculptural form.

Now that we've bid farewell to summer for good (kind of), our focus shifts to finding solutions to restore the health of our skin and hair. We’ve selected a few products that may help mitigate the damage caused by vacation excesses, with a touch of glamour.
Prada’s new Banana Yellow balm takes inspiration from its famous runway design to deliver a golden shimmer with a fruity twist.
Prada has taken one of its most popular motifs from the Spring and Summer 2011 runway and translated it into an unexpected new form: a lip balm. The Prada Balm in Banana Yellow revives the house’s now-iconic banana print, shifting it from fabric to make-up while retaining the same balance of humour that made the original collection so memorable.
The balm itself arrives shaped in Prada’s triangular silhouette and a pastel yellow bullet with a design very similar to the brand’s nylon fabric. Applied, it melts into a sheer golden finish, leaving lips with a warm lustre that recalls the shimmer of ice in a banana granita. Its versatility extends beyond the mouth; the balm can be tapped onto cheeks for a subtle radiance. Prada has also introduced a scent to match the fun design.
Rather than the artificial sweet smell of a candy, the fragrance is described as a reworked juicy banana scent layered over the iris signature that runs through the brand’s wider beauty line. Functionality remains central to the product. The formula includes bifidus extract and jojoba oil, developed to maintain hydration for up to 24 hours, while the packaging has been designed as refillable, reducing material weight by 76% compared to replacing a full case.
The launch was teased in pop culture before its release, appearing first as Prada Banana candy in Sabrina Carpenter’s Manchild music video, a tongue-in-cheek prelude to the balm itself. It follows previous experiments in the line, such as the Astral Pink colour-changing balm, which sparked attention for its pastel blue casing and pH-adapting technology.

Huda Beauty introduces Easy Bake Duo, offering pink and peach setting powders in one pack.
Huda Beauty’s Easy Bake has long held cult status as a setting powder, and now it arrives in a new format, the Easy Bake Duo. Designed to combine colour correction and brightening in one compact design, the duo brings together two shades that can be used separately or blended for a customised finish. The idea is simple but clever. Each pack contains a pink shade to lift and brighten, and a peach shade to correct and neutralise dark circles. For light to medium skin tones, the Cherry Peach duo features the bestselling Cherry Blossom Cake, a sheer soft pink, alongside Peach Pie, a light peach. For deeper skin tones, the Pink Pumpkin duo introduces two entirely new shades - Pink Velvet Cookie, a deep rosy pink, and Pumpkin Pie, a deep salmon peach.
The powders promise up to 18 hours of wear with a blurring matte airbrush finish that absorbs oil, controls shine and sets make-up without flashback (the unwanted white cast that appears on the face in flash photography). Formulated to be non-comedogenic, the lightweight texture is enriched with rice starch powder to minimise pores, features micronised particles to prevent caking and contains vitamin E to provide a smoother application.
The packaging is flexible. A rotating selector allows you to choose one shade at a time or mix the two together, with the option to remove the divider entirely for easier dispensing. The process is straightforward: twist to select, shake to dispense and bake to set.

Across the Middle East, beauty brands are proving that luxury and responsibility can go hand in hand. Bushra Hakim spotlights regional brands leading the way.
Beauty isn’t just about how you look on the outside anymore; it’s also about what you stand for. From the creams we apply to the perfumes we wear, the brands we choose are a reflection of our values just as much as our style. In the Middle East, a quiet revolution is happening, where local brands are proving that luxury, efficacy and environmental responsibility can coexist. These brands are rethinking ingredients, packaging and production, merging science with the region’s rich heritage and culture. Here is a list of the ones leading the way in redefining what ‘green’ beauty looks like.
Known for crafting some of the world’s most complex perfumes, Amouage has also become a steward of one of Oman’s most precious natural resources: frankincense. In partnership with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, the brand now harvests Boswellia sacra trees in Wadi Dawkah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The project not only safeguards sustainable sourcing but also employs and trains harvesters in traditional harvesting skills. With FairWild certification, each drop of frankincense is traceable and ethically collected. By investing in heritage and biodiversity, Amouage demonstrates how a luxury house can work with responsibility.

Arcadia by Amna is all about sustainability. Every perfume is crueltyfree, handcrafted locally and made using high-quality ingredients that are safe for both people and the environment. Packaging is designed to minimise waste, which is why bottles are reused during production, and all pouches are made from natural fabrics that can be repurposed. Even small details, like the omission of magnetic caps in favour of steel closures, reduce unnecessary materials. Beyond perfumes, their candle holders for Bakhoor and Midkhan are handmade using recycled cement and reused steel, supporting local artisans while keeping the ecological footprint low.

Founded by Reem Al Khalifa, Green Bar is one of the first homegrown brands in Bahrain to put natural skincare at the forefront. Every soap, oil and cream is handmade using botanicals grown in her family garden or sourced from local farmers, reducing the footprint of imported ingredients while supporting community livelihoods. The formulas avoid synthetics, leaning more on botanicals like mint, rose and mulberry, boosted with the richness of mango and shea butter. The packaging remains minimal to reduce waste, while the brand’s café extends its ethos of wellness from skincare to plant-based dining. It’s a holistic model of sustainability, rooted in the land.

This Emirati skincare label is small but serious about the welfare of our planet. Mariam Em utilises postconsumer recycled (PCR) plastic in its packaging, avoids unnecessary promotional materials and is transitioning towards refillable systems to minimise waste. On the formulation side, the brand embraces a simpler, cleaner ingredient list inspired by local botanicals, such as the Sidr tree (Ziziphus Spina-Christi), a desert plant prized for its healing qualities. The result is skincare that is both effective and mindful of its environmental footprint, with transparency at its core. By focussing on what’s inside the bottle as much as outside, Mariam Em sets a clear example of modern green beauty in the region.

Torba Naturals is built on a true farm-to-bottle philosophy, with many of its ingredients grown on the brand’s own permaculture farm in Qatar. Founded by twins Mohammed and Fatma Al Khater, it revives native plants and traditional remedies, transforming them into clean, chemical-free skincare, wellness and home essentials. Thoughtfulness runs through every stage: crops are cultivated using regenerative agriculture, packaging is refillable or plastic-free, and collaborations with local artisans and farmers strengthen the community around them. The result is a brand where beauty and well-being remain closely tied to the land itself.

From emotional resilience to calming treatments, wellness takes many forms. We explore its eight pillars to help you find equilibrium.
Wellness is a word that gets thrown around a lot and is often associated with yoga mats, smoothie bowls or the gym. But the truth is, it’s so much more than that. Instead, it’s about creating balance across every area of life, right from how we manage stress to the way we connect with others and even how we look after our bank accounts. To live well, we need to think of wellness as a multi-dimensional aspect. Here’s a look at its eight key types and how you can nurture them in everyday life.
Exercise is what people think of when they hear the word physical fitness. But it’s less about sculpted abs and more about building habits that support your body long-term. That could mean walking to clear your head, eating foods that energise you or getting enough rest to recover properly. Consistency in all of these basics is what actually keeps you fit.
We all experience stress, frustration and sadness, but being emotionally well is about how we respond to those feelings. It’s recognising emotions without judgement and having healthy ways to manage them. That might mean journalling, practising mindfulness or leaning on a trusted friend or mentor for support. Building resilience allows you to bounce back from life’s challenges instead of being swept away by them.
Keeping your mind active is just as important as keeping your body moving. Intellectual wellness comes from curiosity, learning and creativity. Reading, completing puzzles, exploring a new hobby or even engaging in conversations that challenge your perspective can all help. In fact, studies have shown that these activities help increase grey matter. It’s about feeding your brain with ideas that stretch it beyond the everyday routine.
Strong connections are vital for a fulfilling life. Social well-being is about nurturing relationships that are supportive, positive and meaningful. Quality is more important than quantity here; a couple of good friendships often matter more than dozens of acquaintances. Make time for loved ones, communicate openly and don’t be afraid to set boundaries to protect your energy.
Spirituality doesn’t necessarily mean religion; rather, it’s about finding purpose and meaning in life. Some people connect through faith, others through meditation, time in nature or simply pausing to reflect on what matters most to them. Aligning your values with your actions creates a sense of peace and direction, no matter what form your practice takes.
Considering how much time we spend working, our jobs have a huge impact on our health. This aspect is about finding satisfaction in what you do, whether that’s in a formal career, creative projects or volunteer work. Feeling valued and aligned with your strengths can boost motivation and morale, while setting boundaries helps maintain balance, prevent burnout and avoid conflicts.
The spaces we live and work in play a bigger role in our well-being than many of us realise. A cluttered, noisy or chaotic environment can increase stress, while an organised, calm and sustainable space supports clarity and peace of mind. Spending time outdoors, adding greenery indoors or even small steps like recycling can improve your connection to your environment.
Money doesn’t buy happiness, but financial stress can most definitely take it away. Being well-off financially means managing your resources wisely –budgeting, saving and making decisions that support both your present needs and future goals. It’s not about being wealthy, but about feeling secure and in control, with spending choices that reflect your priorities as well as values.
Foot- and hand-care superstar Bastien Gonzalez was in town to visit his specialist PEDI:MANI:CURE STUDIO at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. Liz O’Reily was lucky enough to experience his magic firsthand.
Feet are funny things. They bear the weight of our whole bodies and, if you’re privileged to have delicate little size 36 tootsies and slender ankles, you might well be a salon regular, painting your toenails in vibrant shades and celebrating your feet. But if, like most of us, your feet are functional operators, chances are they are, at best, kept clean with the nails trimmed or, at worst, neglected and a source of some discomfort. Bastien Gonzalez’s mission is to change all that. He wants to educate both clients and foot-care practitioners that there’s another way…
And what a way!
I have to admit, I arrived at his studio with some trepidation. Long-term callouses and nail damage have left me a little wary of pedicures in general –I find it almost impossible to get my nails cut straight and the slightest curve leads to problems. But, a quick chat with the man himself, soon put me at ease. He agreed that shaping and curving, particularly for nails like mine, does more harm than good.
He also counselled against the practice of pushing the cuticles down with the usual small wooden stick, informing me that this would actually exacerbate my problems causing the tough skin at the sides of my nails to impact. Instead, he suggested brushing, even recommending an electric toothbrush as the ideal implement!
We headed to the studio, where we were met by Amal Ammous, who manages the maestro’s Bahrain operation and would join him in administering Bastien’s Duo – a synchronised four-hands treatment focussing on both feet and hands. The boutique space boasts a superbly comfortable, adjustable treatment chair, the pale walls bearing images of Bastien alongside display shelves showcasing his Révérence de Bastien product line of foot- and hand-care products, many of which are made with the purest water from his property in France.
Soft music played and I settled in, waiting for the magic to begin. Bastien explained that the basis of his treatment is not simply a ‘pedi’ or ‘mani’ but rather a cure for the feet and hands – from nails to skin and bones to ligaments – in a three-step process.
Unlike your regular mani or pedi, everything is done dry because wet skin ‘gives a false impression’ whereas, working with dry skin allows your therapist to see exactly what the issues are.
He began with my nails using four different grains of specially designed, ever finer smoothing/polishing tools, to remove ridges and achieve an almost completely flat finish. This was coupled with the diamond powder from his own range and finished by buffing using a natural chamois buffer and Révérence mother-of-pearl cream to bring my nails to a bright, luxurious shine, described as the ‘true French manicure’.
I have to admit that, at this stage, I already felt like a princess, particularly since every move by Bastien at my feet was mirrored by Amal at my fingertips, and the best was still to come.
Next, it was the turn of my skin. A process I had been both anticipating and slightly nervous of. I have two particularly troublesome callouses and, after examining my feet, Bastien, who is a qualified chiropodist, explained that slight misalignment of my bones causes me to carry my weight on the
outsides of my feet. This results in patches of very hard skin which set off a cycle. The skin is painful, thus I overcompensate, making the callouses even worse.
Single-use blades were employed on my callouses coupled with a Black Diamond Scrub to exfoliate much more kindly than using an abrasive method. The result? Feet as soft as a baby’s bottom – and, as an added bonus, he also showed me some gentle manipulation techniques to prolong the effect.
And lastly, the massage. Oh, the massage. Bastien describes this as one of the most important parts of the process, seeing the feet as puppets and the legs as the strings that operate them.
From the base of my feet up to my knees, he rubbed, jiggled and manipulated in a technique based on Thai massage to bring my feet and lower legs into alignment – skin, bones, ligaments all in harmony.
Again, Amal, working on my hands and arms, mirrored each of Bastien’s movements, the pair of them working in perfectly synchronised rhythm to deliver the ultimate in both pampering and relaxation.
I can honestly say, I have never experienced a treatment quite like this. Considered, gentle and extremely effective. I actually floated, rather than walked, out of the studio and, several days later, I am still enjoying the benefits.

OHLALA caught up with Bastien Gonzalez, just as he had received the latest in a long line of accolades, the World’s Best Nail Studio Brand at the World Spa Awards, to discover what drives him in his business.
OHLALA – How did you first get started in the world of foot (and hand) care?
Bastien Gonzalez – I come from a medical background, but very quickly I discovered that I wanted to explore and offer more to my clientele. I moved into the world of luxury hotel spas in 1998 in Paris and, at that time, nobody understood why I would give up a very successful medical office for a hotel spa – and bear in mind, it was not like the spas of today. But I had the vision to be in the right place and I have no regrets.
OHLALA – You’ve said it’s your mission to educate both clients and spa professionals on proper foot care. Where are so many of us going wrong and what should we change?
Bastien – Education and emotion are the two pillars of my concept: pedi-cure – pedi meaning of the foot and leg and cure being treatment. This is the true definition. Not painting the nails but rather curing the nail (of abuse from too much nail polish). Feet are not just nails; we also work on the skin. We work on dry skin to be very precise and for callouses we use the best techniques from drilling with diamond drills to cutting, depending on the need. Even though my concept has strong protocols, we adapt them to our customers.
OHLALA – Your technique does not use water, relying instead on working with dry skin. Why is this?
Bastien – To really feel the skin, it needs to be dry, so you can assess the callouses. If you soak the feet in water, you over moisturise and you cannot see or feel the real condition. It’s just like a good hairdresser, cutting dry to see the actual volume of the hair.
OHLALA – You’re also internationally known for your buffing tools and techniques, inspired by your great grandmother. Please tell us about that and a little about your own personal buffer collection. Bastien – I have a passion for the market and discovering beautiful pieces with history. One day I saw in a museum collection the buffer of Marie Antoinette, our last Queen of France. (Proof that I didn’t invent buffing.) So, I started to look out for buffers in the market with natural chamois and beautiful shapes. I must have about 200 of them now in my private collection, some of them are quite spectacular. But, my favourite is still the one of my great grandmother, which inspired the one I created
for my product line. Hers was in mother-of-pearl, which is impossible to find in large pieces today. Instead, I produce mine from buffalo horn in a unique shape, very ergonomic and, at the same time, super elegant.
OHLALA – You have created your own product collection which uses pure water from your French countryside reserve. How have the products been developed?
Bastien – Over 25 years. I was not planning to have a large product brand. I am about efficiency and simplicity. But, with regular lab work, we look into new molecules and how we can always improve our quality. Nine years ago, I started using the water from the village where I grew up, Eau de Treignac. This came about as water represented a big part of the cosmetic creams and it was amazing to open a new chapter for Révérence de Bastien. Three years ago, we started the BGA Parc in central France in the Corrèze village of Affieux, where I am happy to have my logistics operation, and we are planning to produce local plants for our future products. Creativity never stops but sustainability must come with it.
OHLALA – Your manicures and pedicures conclude with an in-depth massage. Why is this part of the process so important?
Bastien – It is the most important part! It helps to restore the mobility of your feet which are extremely complex with 26 bones, 123 ligaments and 51 muscles. We do our best to work in several areas – stretching the leg muscles to improve foot joint mobility at the same time pushing the blood up from the feet and helping the elasticity of the skin through pushing and rolling techniques. It’s an intense massage that should leave you walking on air.
OHLALA – Your pedicure has been described as among the best in the world. How does that make you feel?
Bastien – Very happy! I love competition and being selected as number one in front of great colleagues from around the world by a very important spa awards organisation gives me the energy to continue this journey of changing the way people look at feet and giving them the love they deserve.

The wellness industry plays a significant role in OHLALA’s world. This month, we interviewed Aysha Al Khalifa, the owner of Lavande Beauty Spa, for an insight into this beauty haven, which is celebrating 10 years.
OHLALA – Your journey weaves together beauty training, business studies and a career in public relations. How did these different chapters shape your outlook before you became an entrepreneur?
Aysha Al Khalifa – My diverse background gave me a unique foundation. I learned how to understand and connect with people through public relations, gained strategic business knowledge and developed a passion for the beauty industry. All of these experiences prepared me with the right skills to launch my own business.
OHLALA– With such a diverse background, what ultimately pushed you to take the leap and establish Lavande Beauty Spa back in 2015?
Aysha – It was the culmination of a lifelong dream. Ever since I first studied beauty in Beirut back in 2005, I’ve had a clear vision of creating a space that offers exceptional beauty and spa services. Lavande was the fulfilment of that passion.
OHLALA – What lessons from your time at the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities do you still apply to your business today?
Aysha – That experience taught me the importance of diligence, teamwork and problem-solving. It’s where I honed my skills in managing different teams and vendors, making informed decisions and navigating difficult situations. These lessons are essential for running a successful business.
OHLALA – Lavande has been operating for a decade now. What do you think has been the key factor to its longevity in such a competitive industry?
Aysha – The key to our success is my constant, hands-on involvement. As an owner, I am also a present manager. I believe that being actively involved in the day-to-day operations and connecting with our clients and staff is crucial for maintaining our standards and staying ahead in this fast-paced industry.
OHLALA– Over the years, the beauty industry has become more innovative and dynamic. How do you decide which treatments or trends are worth introducing?
Aysha – We stay current through continuous research and professional development. We work closely with leading industry institutions and make it a priority to attend advanced training courses. This ensures that any new treatment or trend we introduce is effective and truly benefits our clients.
“The beauty industry in Bahrain is incredibly dynamic and constantly evolving.”
– Aysha Al Khalifa
OHLALA– Every business journey has its challenges. What has been one of the most significant obstacles you’ve faced as an entrepreneur and how did you overcome it?
Aysha – One of the biggest challenges has been building a unified team. It’s a continuous process of nurturing a familylike environment where everyone feels valued and supports each other. It’s a rewarding challenge, as a strong and unified team is the foundation of our success.
OHLALA– What tips can you give to someone who wants to start a business in the beauty field?
Aysha – Starting a business in the beauty field is all about building a solid foundation. I recommend starting slowly and not expanding too quickly, taking the time to study the market and adjust your approach. If you do that, you’ll grow steadily and build a business you’re proud of.
OHLALA– Entrepreneurship can sometimes feel isolating. Who or what has been your biggest source of motivation and grounding throughout this journey?
Aysha – I am incredibly grateful for my support system. My mentors and the people around me have been a constant source of guidance and motivation. Their continuous support is a blessing that keeps me grounded and focussed.
OHLALA– How do you see the beauty scenario in Bahrain?
Aysha – The beauty industry in Bahrain is incredibly dynamic and constantly evolving. It’s always keeping pace with global trends and we are committed to continually improving our services to meet the changing demands and high standards of our clients.

This month, we delve into the masculine universe in its feminine form with Max Mara’s AW2025 Sartoriale (Tailored Suit) capsule.
The Italian brand is well-known for its timeless creations and impeccable (quite unique) way of making tailoring a very feminine choice. Max Mara constructs a silhouette that rewrites the rules of men’s wardrobe staples, offering structures that celebrate and embrace women’s bodies.
When Max Mara launched its Tailored Suit project 11 years ago, it introduced a collection of classic, high-quality suits for women, inspired by traditional men’s tailoring techniques. The jacket was an overlooked element, seen as secondary to other style solutions. But the brand sees this piece as a travel companion and an instrument of self-affirmation. The goal of this project was to translate an icon of menswear into a jacket whose cut, proportions and finish easily adapt to feminine curves. It is a laborious job; it takes 345 minutes of work to make a Tailored Suit jacket, twice that of a standard style. The refined fabrics, the canvas on the inside, the 130 hand-sewn stitches on the armhole and the careful pressing make it unique in the natural way it moulds to the various female physiques. For Autumn and Winter 2025, the jacket comes in double- and single-breasted versions. The silhouettes play with constructed/deconstructed contrasts, where more formal double-breasted and semi- or fully-lined versions alternate with a softer, canvassed structure that resemble a lightweight shirt. Then there is the double-breasted jacket with elongated lapels and the velvet tuxedo version. On the single-breasted front, the ultra-feminine, three-button jacket is back with an accentuated waist. There is also a lightweight, two-button version in flowing fabric, as well as a menswearinspired version with longer proportions. The materials range from light, pure-cashmere melange to smooth velvet and ultra-light pure wools, plus the must-have pure-camel drap, the new slubbed melange wool, the Shetland effect that blends refined materials such as alpaca, cashmere, camel hair and yak, and finally, the yarn-dyed pinstriped and checked patterns. As for the colours, traditional shades such as ivory, black, kasha (golden brown), camel, grey and navy blue are accompanied by nude, denim blue that fades into light blue, loden green, brown and gold. A capsule made for women who travel, work, speak up, explore, listen and invent –mothers, sisters and daughters.

This untouched part of the country is home to the first Our Habitas property in the peninsula. Fernanda Langhammer and her family headed there to experience the brand’s ‘luxury for the soul’ concept, which she happily embraced.
When I previously thought of the word nature, for some reason, a lot of greenery would pop into my head. However, after visiting Our Habitas Ras Abrouq, I learned that a natural environment can be so much more. Located on the Arabian Gulf at the edge of the UNESCO-protected Al-Reem Biosphere reserve, I explored another type of nature, one that involves the beauty of the desert – golden sand, limestone formations meeting calm and transparent waters, kissed by the most amazing sunsets I have ever witnessed in my life. Nature lives there in a majestic form. Just like every place offering a unique experience, you have to go on a little drive to get there. For me, leaving the buzz of the city behind for a feeling of proper time off is worth every journey. About an hour’s drive from Doha, Our Habitas Ras Abrouq is a great escape for those looking for relaxation but also a touch of magic.
The hotel blends effortlessly with the beauty of Qatar’s West Coast. It looks as if it always belonged there. The low constructions are covered in tents, giving you the feeling of desert camping in the most luxe way possible. The 48 villas, ranging from one to four bedrooms, come with one or more private plunge pools and spacious outdoor decks. We were welcomed with big smiles and warmth by the team. We received a cold, refreshing towel and a drink and were escorted to the outside area facing the pool (one of the longest pools in the country) and the sea. In this scenario, Abhishikta entranced us in the Welcome Ritual where she invited us to be part of the Our Habitas family. She burned mastika for a moment of relaxation, letting the bad energy exit our bodies and minds. We received a bracelet bearing the hotel’s logo, imprinted on a wooden circle, with three arrows representing each of the owners and red straps in burgundy colour, the same as the Qatari flag. A gesture that made us feel really welcomed.
The décor of the villas features soothing earthy tones, natural textures and local design elements, adding an elegant twist to the region’s cultural tapestry. The many carpets inside and outside, with their unique patterns, and Arabic baskets on the walls, give a sense of tradition, but at the same time add an edgy feel – a modern take on local customs.
Our one-bedroom Al Maha Villa had direct access to the beach, meaning uninterrupted views of the vast ocean. The bed was extremely comfortable and the bathroom had a freestanding tub, two sinks and a large shower that had access to the outdoor shower. The room had all the necessary amenities, with a living area with a sofa bed (by the way, the most comfortable sofa bed I have ever seen in a hotel anywhere in the world).
One aspect that I absolutely loved is that there is no TV anywhere – no unpleasant noises, just nature in its own grandeur. However, I have to say that the massive terrace outside, where the infinity plunge pool sits with refined furniture surrounding it, was my favourite aspect. A large rug and sofa with big clay pots seemed placed as if they had always been there. All colours match beautifully, creating no contrast with the scenery, just complementing the already stunning setup.
We could have stayed in our villa the whole time; that wouldn’t have been a bad decision, however, there are many activities to join. One of the first things we did when we arrived was to request some bikes to move around the property and explore its spaces.
We also visited the watersports area and went kayaking, which was extremely enjoyable. The water is super calm and the transparent vessel made the trip even more fun.
The gym is filled with Technogym equipment, and the view you have when using the treadmill is breathtaking. Every day, we would receive a daily programme that offered yoga, singing bowls, a karak tea workshop and the unmissable sunset safari to Richard Serra’s East West monument. We joined the latter, and it was an experience we will cherish for the rest of our lives.
The Our Habitas Spa offers an array of treatments. The brand motto is to strengthen the connection to those around us and, to do so, we first need to reconnect with ourselves. I had the opportunity to embark on the Zekreet Oasis Experience, which included a Vibroacoustic Massage for cellular regeneration and an express facial using organic and locally sourced Torba products. The 60-minute massage involves a seven-colour crystal mat that combines the frequency of PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) infrared light, a technology that recharges your cells through whole-body exposure. It promotes detoxification, enhances blood circulation, stimulates cell metabolism and reduces inflammation. Lower frequencies relax larger muscles, while higher frequencies revitalise smaller ones, delivering a holistic experience that promotes both physical ease and mental well-being. The 30-minute facial was rejuvenating and used cool tools and red, blue and green light to reduce fine lines. It was a comprehensive treatment, and my therapist, Geeta, knew exactly what she was doing to deliver a tailored experience. I felt refreshed with my mental and physical well-being cared for.
The culinary experience was a chapter apart. I have to confess that I am a foodie and good food brings me happiness. Qissa is the main restaurant; its décor blends Bedouin vibes with elegant furnishing. We had all our meals there. The breakfast offers a wide selection, but you can also order specific items such as smoothies and eggs prepared to your taste.
Chef Luke Borg has recently joined the Our Habitas Ras Abrouq family. He is from Malta, but has worked in many different locations and brings his culinary talent to this piece of paradise. The menu is an interesting combination of Mediterranean staples married with an Arabic twist. Chef Luke seems to be extremely comfortable in this scenario, and his dishes were unforgettable. We tried a few recipes and some of them were spectacular, such as the Watermelon Salad made with roasted watermelon, feta cheese,
radish, mint, olives, red onion and yuzu vinaigrette – it was like eating summer – super refreshing. The different textures and sweet, savoury and tangy notes created an explosion on our taste buds. The Red Ceviche was another fresh pick, featuring confit prawns, red onion, cucumber, coriander, sweet potato, a creamy red pepper sauce, cashew and chilli, with an interesting twist: it was accompanied by papadum crisps. We believe the trick is also in the cut; everything was chopped into small pieces, creating the perfect bite. We also had a comforting Red Coconut Curry with prawns, delivering balanced flavours, and an outstanding grilled tenderloin accompanied by roasted potatoes (the best ones I have probably ever had in my life) in a bed of muhammara sauce and chimichurri. The meat was cooked to perfection and the sauces complemented the dish beautifully. If you want to eat a great meal and dine in a magical atmosphere, I highly recommend the drive from Doha just for that.
Our Habitas Ras Abrouq is beyond compare. The terrain to get to the property seems to come from a sci-fi movie. The limestone mesas (geological formations) give lunar vibes and a scenario that I have never experienced before.
The mule deer that live on the property give an extra charm to the place. They are harmless and come very close to say hello. You just have to be careful and not leave any food around because they are pretty cheeky. And last but not least, the sunsets – they are absolutely mesmerising. They are a reminder of how wonderful the universe is and how grateful we should be.
Thank you, Our Habitas, for respecting nature and creating such an extraordinary haven of peace and beauty.

Looking for a connection with nature, Fernanda Langhammer headed to this archipelago in the Indian Ocean to explore its beauty while staying at Constance Ephelia and Constance Lemuria.
If you read my pages every month, you already know this, but I will repeat myself: I love travelling. There are lots of people (really a lot of people) sharing the same passion I do. Exploring a new country, its architecture, cuisine and culture is something that excites me. I had never been to Seychelles before, and I was lucky enough to see it through my stays at Constance Ephelia and Constance Lemuria hotels –an experience that is worth sharing.
The journey to this slice of bliss on Earth started at Constance Ephelia, located on the main island of Mahé. After a drive across the island, which allowed me to take in all the beauty of the scenery, we reached the hotel which is in a natural park occupying 120 hectares – it’s a huge resort filled with greenery, mangroves, white sand and azure waters.
As soon as we reached the property, smiley Tembi, the watchman, welcomed us with enthusiasm, wishing us a pleasant stay. By the hotel entrance, a big team was waiting for us and made sure our check in went smoothly, done in the sofa area of Zee Bar, perfectly aligning with the chilled atmosphere of the resort.
Constance Ephelia is composed of 313 rooms ranging from junior and senior suites to two- and three-bedroom villas, hillside villas and a presidential suite – all have either garden or sea views. My Junior Suite had the spectacular ocean a few steps away and was very spacious. It had a comfy bed full of pillows, a large sofa and a bathtub separating the room from the bathroom. Boasting all the necessary amenities, there was also plenty of space to store my belongings.
The hotel’s position is privileged, the natural park sits at the end of the peninsula and the property is divided into North and South, offering two main beaches and a few private gems. The beautiful and blooming mangroves create a path between the two parts. A good way to roam around the property is to request one of the bikes available at the Fitness Centre.
The sea in the South area, where I stayed, was rough during my stay (it depends on the time of the year), while the North beach was very calm and great for swimming. The imposing mountains surrounding the water make this place quite magical, which made me feel at one with nature.
But Constance Ephelia offers much more than just dreamy beaches; it provides an array of activities, with hiking being my favourite of them all.
A 1.6km walk inside the forest to cross from South to North, a path up the mountain providing the most breathtaking views – a unique experience without leaving the hotel premises.
Constance Spa is another highlight. With 18 rooms shaped like little huts, the space is a haven of tranquillity and transports your mind to a place of calm. With a pool in the centre, yoga classes happening outdoors and privacy in each treatment room, this part of the property is a jewel in a lush tropical scenario.
I headed there for a classic massage to immerse myself in relaxation. My therapist, Ratna, understood the task and, instead of working on pressure points, she delivered a treatment that allowed me to enjoy a true state of restfulness. The wind outside, kissing the palm trees that eventually touched the natural roof of the hut, created a sound that made my mind drift away, absorbing the good energy of the moment. I highly recommend booking a spa treatment while travelling, it hits differently.
If you like water, there are eight pools spread across the property and two boathouses offering watersports gear on each side of the resort. You can choose from pedal boats, small sailing catamarans, kayaks and snorkelling gear. However, if you prefer land sports, you’ll find four tennis courts, padel and squash courts and a fully equipped gym to help you keep up your workout routine. If you travel there with your family, there is a kids’ club called Coconut Tribe, where even the loungers by the private pool for the little ones are sized accordingly.
When you go to a beach resort, you don’t usually expect that food will be a key element and one that stands out. However, at Constance Hotels & Resorts, this matter is taken seriously and is offered with a wide selection of fine grapes. Constance Ephelia has seven eateries: Corossol (where the breakfast is served, but where you also find a selection of international dishes), Helios (Mediterranean cuisine), Adam & Eve (with a Southeast Asian menu), Seselwa (to explore local Seychellois recipes), Cyann (for a fine-dining experience) and Zee and Kabana bars for a more relaxed atmosphere with small bites and creative drinks. Every outlet has at least one or two sommeliers helping elevate the dining experience. I had many memorable meals during my stay, but I will highlight some of my favourite ones. The Tom Yum soup at Adam & Eve was beautiful, not too thin, offering the perfect creaminess and coconut flavour, with prawns and shimeji mushrooms cooked to perfection. Still at the same restaurant, the cubed red snapper in a sticky, sweet and tangy sauce, with crispy edges and a soft interior, was simply divine, especially when paired with the smoked eggplant. At Seselwa, the dish that took me back home, Palm Heart Gratin, won my taste buds. Baked palm heart in bechamel sauce, topped with parmesan cheese, came bubbling and felt incredibly comforting. At Cyann, the prawn carpaccio, accompanied by sauces that represented the colours of the country’s flag, was almost too pretty to eat – fine dining at its best. Each eatery has its specialised chef delivering the best of each cuisine.
To get to this property on the island of Praslin, we took a small plane, and in 15 minutes we reached our new destination. Constance Lemuria is a short drive from the airport and feels a bit more elegant and cosy, giving the impression that it was built in a way that makes it part of nature. Our arrival was received with grandeur; a gong played while we walked towards the massive doors of the hotel, opening right after the last gong sound disappeared. The vision behind the doors was stunning, the open reception, showcasing the infinity pool facing the ocean – an image that keeps replaying on my mind.
My room at Lemuria was very similar to Ephelia, a Junior Suite with sea views. The room was brighter and the furnishings a bit more sophisticated. I loved that there was a window between the bathtub and the room, adding a touch of charm to the space. A clothesline on top of the tub was my favourite detail; many resorts forget to offer a solution to dry wet swimsuits. The double sink and spacious shower made it perfect.
One of the main attractions at Lemuria is its 18-hole championship golf course. I am not an expert in the sport (I am actually the opposite), but we were invited to try out the course with a patient instructor, Gary. He gave us some basic instructions and, in no time, we were hitting our balls with different clubs, understanding movements and lingo – a fun experience for beginners and a great setup for pros.
The sea in front of my room had slightly choppy waters; however, I went for a short swim on one of the mornings and it was splendid – nature is perfect! To best enjoy a proper swim, we headed to Anse Georgette, a beach world-renowned for its soft white sand, turquoise waters and lush green surroundings. I am a water enthusiast (I grew up swimming in the sea), so I stayed long hours catching waves and diving when they were too high – I felt like a kid again.
With five restaurants and one bar, gastronomy is once again at the centre of the experience – to the delight of the foodie in me. Legend is the main restaurant, where a varied and delicious breakfast is served, offering stunning views. Located in a high area, the greenery and turquoise water bathed my eyes while my black coffee soothed my soul in the early hours of the day. Takamaka (yes, the name of the country’s famous liquor, but also the national
The dinner was accompanied by entertainment featuring local songs played on percussion instruments, creating an atmosphere of vibrancy that made the meal one of the best of the entire trip. We tried a set menu called My Seychelles Story by Chef Jordi Villa. It was incredibly refreshing and paired very well with the climate. A coconut palm salad, served on a coconut shell, was spot on for me for its simplicity and smooth flavours. The Nest has an incredible location on top of a small hill, offering views of the sea and beach, as well as local cuisine. The seafood curry is a must-have! Last but not least, Diva is all about fine dining. The décor is funky with purple chandeliers resembling jellyfish and raffia chairs that recreate the turtles’ shells. Dinner was in the company of lovely Marie Noella, Lemuria’s Executive Assistant Manager, who told us all about Constance Hotels & Resorts. She’s been working with the company for 25 years, certainly a voice of experience and someone who understands the brand very well. To my surprise, the menu had my name on it, which was a caring touch that made me smile – a personalised souvenir. The entire selection was impeccable, but the Hokkaido scallops with Kampot pepper and verjus emulsion (a creamy buttery sauce made with verjus, a non-alcoholic juice of unripe grapes) was perfection in a bite. The crunchy top of the scallop, mixed with the sweetness of the mollusc and the saltiness of the jus, made it a star dish to my palate.
Both properties take the environment where they are located very seriously. At Ephelia, Markus is the sustainability manager and at Lemuria, Joseph. We enjoyed a nice talk with them and found out that Ephelia is home to seven species of mangroves and is certified as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. An important certification that promotes conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. We walked around the property and learned about the bees making mangrove honey, spiders that create a balanced environment and even tried a germinated coconut that Markus promptly opened with the skill of a person who is wilderness-smart. In Lemuria, Joseph explained why they didn’t cut the bushes near the beach to give guests an open view of the sea. The reason? The vegetation in a hatching nest for turtles. They even have a special room by the sea with visual and written explanations about the turtles, where Robert, the turtle manager, sits.
Constance’s motto, True by Nature, says a lot; they not only celebrate the natural environment where the brand has its properties, but also the nature of its people. Everyone was extremely polite without losing their own personality. We got to explore the properties in the company of many of them, sharing their stories and helping to bring the brand’s vision to life. Big thanks to Galia, Anais, Hiru, Sheila, Didier, Vladimir, Mr Stephane, all the chefs, Sachin, John, Richard, Diane, Abir and everyone that made this memorable experience possible. I am grateful for your time and for creating memories that I will cherish and carry with me forever. I hope to see you again one of these days – I do plan to return to this magical Creole land.

Skyline views, samba grooves and a feast to remember are what Bushra Hakim relished at SUSHISAMBA.
There’s something about dining high above the city that makes it all the more exciting. As the lift doors glide open on the 25th floor of Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour, you’re immediately drawn into the colourful world of SUSHISAMBA. A glowing neon sign and the gentle pulse of jazz-infused Latin beats welcome you, while the interiors exude a moody, intimate vibe. My eyes were immediately drawn to the floor-to-ceiling windows that give an almost 360-degree view across Bahrain Bay and the glittering skyline of Manama. I can only imagine how breathtaking the scene must be in daylight, especially during the Friday brunch, which is making a comeback in October. With cooler weather on the way, the outdoor terrace by the pool is set to be in full swing, another tempting reason for a daytime visit. We were warmly welcomed by Samson Nair, the Assistant Restaurant General Manager, whose enthusiasm for the space instantly made us feel at ease. Inside, the décor leans fully into Amazonian inspiration, with flashes of burnt orange, exotic touches and lush greenery. The ambience maintains a balance of glamour and tropical fun while also representing the restaurant’s tricultural heart, a mix of Japan, Brazil and Peru. Our server for the evening, Patience, truly lived up to her name. Attentive and patient, she perfectly guided us through the adventurous night. We began with Aperitivos (starters), an ideal way to ease into the evening. A trio of Edamame, Plantain Chips and Green Beans Tempura made its way to our table, simple yet utterly addictive. The edamame, lightly salted and kissed with lime, kept us dipping back in between conversations. The plantain chips, crisp and golden, came with a tangy Aji Amarillo sauce (a Peruvian yellow chilli pepper dip) that had just the right kick, awakening the palate with hints of yuzu. Then came the Green Beans Tempura,
a clever mix of crunch and cream, elevated by a rich black truffle aioli that lingered with every bite. To sip alongside, I tried the alcohol-free Elderflower and Passion Fruit Martini, floral, tangy and far too easy to order another round of. For something more unique, the Azure mocktail was a standout. The coconut cream, lychee and lime with soda, served in a vivid blue drink made it feel just as tropical as it tasted. The small plates set the pace nicely. The Wagyu Gyoza arrived first, delicate little parcels of pan-fried goodness topped with a sweet soy drizzle. The melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu filling, brightened by ginger, paired beautifully with the sweet kabocha (Japanese squash) purée. The Shrimp Tempura, though, stole my heart. Golden, battered shrimps on a bed of greens, tossed in spicy mayo and black truffle vinaigrette. Crunchy, creamy and so addictive I could’ve polished off the whole bowl alone. To try something raw, we sampled the Tuna Seviche (ceviche with ‘s’ from SUSHISAMBA) –cubes of fresh tuna swimming in a citrusy leche de tigre. The acidity was sharp but balanced, with pomegranate seeds adding bursts of sweetness and wasabi peas lending a much-needed crunch. For the mains, we made sure to cover all three cuisines. From Brazil came the Churrasco Rio Grande, one that I had been eyeing all night. A sizzling hot plate of ribeye, chorizo and picanha (a speciality Brazilian cut), served with chimichurri, black beans, collard greens and farofa (toasted cassava flour). Each cut was distinct: the ribeye juicy with just the right fat-to-meat ratio, the picanha tender with its signature cap of fat, and the chorizo boldly smoky and spicy. It only got better with each bite, the accompaniments adding new twists that kept things exciting till the very end.
From Brazil, we moved to Peru with the Black Cod Anticuchos. Served on skewers, the cod, tenderised with miso, melted at the touch of a fork. Its buttery sweetness was paired with Peruvian corn, larger and nuttier than the sweetcorn most of us know. It was a simple plate, but full of depth and intrigue.
And for a taste of Japan, the Mushroom Kamameshi was a comforting bowl of sticky rice cooked with assorted mushrooms, truffle shavings, garlic chips and yuzu soy. It was rich and umami-packed, with the citrus cutting through beautifully. On the vegetarian side, smoky broccolini and earthy asparagus rounded it out before the sushi arrived, because no one leaves SUSHISAMBA without indulging in it.
The Samba Ultimate was the pièce de résistance. A giant platter piled high with sashimi, including salmon, hamachi (yellow tail), sea bass, tuna, chutoro (medium fatty tuna), octopus and scallops, alongside nigiri of unagi, shrimp and sea bass. Every piece was pristine, glistening and topped with touches such as caviar and ribbons of ginger that made it almost too pretty to eat. The hamachi and chu-toro were unanimous favourites, delicate, fatty and full of flavour, while I, a shrimp lover, couldn’t get enough of the shrimp nigiri. We also sampled a few rolls. The Neo Tokyo, a spicy tuna roll with tempura flakes and Ají Panca (Peruvian red pepper), finished with spicy mayo, was fiery and filling. The Samba Manama was a bold twist, starring toro (a high-fat cut of the bluefin tuna) fried rice and rocoto pepper (very spicy Peruvian chilli peppers) mayo, wrapped in fried tuna. Smoky, citrusy and unique, it was a bite full of personality. Then came dessert, and it was easily one of the most theatrical grand finales I’ve seen. The Yuzu Tree is both an installation and a dish, presented as glowing yellow ‘fruits’ hanging from an orange-coloured tree. Each fruit is, in fact, a delicate yuzu mousse encasing citrus sponge and marmalade, accompanied by Graham crumble and sweet cream ice cream. Cutting it from the tree and cracking into the mousse revealed layers of tangy, creamy and spongy textures, harmonising into the perfect finale. It was playful, dramatic and a real highlight of the night.
SUSHISAMBA is more than just a dinner, it’s a tricultural experience, weaving together Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian flavours against one of the best views in Bahrain. After a night like this, I know I’ll be back soon and, with brunch season about to begin, there couldn’t be a better time.

Fresh flavours abound at the new Masso brunch. Liz O’Reilly headed there to find out what’s on the menu.
When one of your favourite restaurants launches a new Friday brunch, it would be rude not to go take a look. So, I was happy to visit Masso at Palmyard Hotel to sample the La Dolce Vita brunch, which aims to channel long festive meals on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, coupled with French Riviera charm. Inside, the tables were laid with the customary pristine, starched white linens, each bearing a couple of typically Amalfi lemons and a pretty white gerbera to unify the colours. Zig-zag patterned banquet seating in black and white was comfortable enough to invite lingering tastings and a loopy, wickerwork chandelier provided a talking point – it’s such a signature that it even appears on the menu.
The greeting from staff was welcoming without being over effusive and we were soon seated with our choice of drinks enjoying a chilled musical selection from the DJ that really helped us engage with that Friday feeling. Before long, the bread selection arrived with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The bread was super soft, a focaccia almost cake-like in texture dotted with sundried tomatoes. A sundried tomato dip offered a lightly smoky flavour, perfect alongside the aged balsamic, thick, dark and slightly syrupy in consistency.
Arancini Asparagus & Fior Di Latte was served alongside, the asparagus making an interesting addition to this traditional crispy rice ball giving an earthy richness in contrast to the creamy mozzarella.
As the dining room began to fill, voices rang out, glasses clinked and we could feel festivity in the air, a real sense of communal dining but with the table arrangement so well thought out that each grouping could still enjoy some privacy.
The first of our starters, the Caprese Salad looked like a pretty flower with a centre of creamy mozzarella whipped to a fluffy, mousse-like texture encircled by juicy halved plum tomatoes. The cheese was adorned with glistening deep green basil oil – all the elements together forming a tasty and satisfying bite, each separate element playing differently on the taste buds.
The Amalfi Salad was a bright and colourful mix of peppery rocket leaves, slightly bitter frisée and bold, spicy radicchio, coupled with generous chunks of citrus including juicy pomelo and red grapefruit. This literally tasted like summer in a bowl and did indeed evoke long, lazy afternoons on the Amalfi Coast.
Melon & Beef Prosciutto was a delightful combination, the sweet melon providing the perfect contrast to the gamey, nutty meat – a duo I returned to several times.
My favourite among the appetisers though was the Italian Tonno. Small slices of tuna, raw in the centre and lightly seared at the black peppercoated sides – like a Mediterranean version of ceviche. Floating in a sauce of leche de tigre with a whisper of citrus that gave a delicate heat, the plating with hazelnuts, edible flowers, cucumber balls and pickled radishes, looked beautiful and the mix of flavours and textures was a wonderful combination exciting all the senses.
Our pizza arrived with a beautifully thin crust, perfectly charred and blistered at the edges with a light, chewy cheesy centre. Topped with a good helping of crunchy zucchini and briny olives contrasting with sweetness from red onions and tomatoes, a liberal sprinkling of rucola added a peppery green bite. With other dishes in mind, I tried to limit myself, I honestly did, but this was just too yummy and I couldn’t help going back for several slices!
However, one of the things I really like is that Masso serves brunch portions according to the number of people in your party. We were two and we received small portions, perfect in size and not at all overwhelming – so, even several slices of pizza was not overdoing it. And, if something particularly takes your fancy, you just order another portion – sustainable and, at the same time, avoiding that sense of overwhelm when you are overserved. We actually did come close to asking for a second helping of the Homemade Linguine Frutti Di Mare. This was the absolute star dish for both myself and my dining companion. A generous helping of seafood, from shrimps to scallops and lobster morsels, perfectly cooked, tender yet firm and tasty, quite an accomplishment when dealing with several different types of seafood. The homemade pasta was chunky and very slightly al dente, giving a satisfying chew, glistening brightly having been cooked in the accompanying lobster bisque which is made with butter – possibly sinful, definitely amazing – sweet, smooth and distinctly creamy. But we had to leave space for the Branzino (local sea bass) all’Acqua Pazza, which translates as crazy water, poached with several herbs and, sometimes, white grape. Cooked and presented at the table en papillot (in a pouch of parchment paper), which allows the fish to steam in its own juices and those of the added vegetables – in this case sweet red peppers, tangy tomatoes and juicy green olives. Long strings of just crunchy fennel provided a very delicate addition of anise adding a bright richness to the flavour profile. Last up for the savouries was a visit to the Carving Station. Sometimes it’s slow-roasted Wagyu rib eye – on our visit, it was tomahawk cooked a deep pink medium with rich, dark, flavoursome mushroom gravy. A steak knife from French speciality brand Laguiole gave a little je ne sais quoi to do it justice and the meat was succulent and tender, bringing my taste buds alive with the hint of warm open fields and sunshine.
A bowl of fries was served alongside and when I say these were some of the best I’ve ever eaten, it’s really quite an accolade. My Irish heritage dictates a certain obsession with all things potato! Cut thin with their skins left on they were piping hot and noticeably double-cooked for a super crunchy texture then topped with shavings of parmesan – perfect with a sprinkle of sea salt and dipped in truffle mayo. Be still my beating heart.
If, like me, you believe no meal is complete without a sweet finale, Masso does not disappoint. We delighted in creamy fresh lemon sorbet, served in an actual lemon for a fun element to play on the Amalfi theme – bright, tart and an excellent palate cleanser. There was also a layer cake with superbly light sponge tiers bursting with decadent lemon cream, a fluffy, sweet triumph and my absolute favourite.
And, last but definitely not least, came a generous helping of the house speciality: Giant Masso Tiramisu. Served from a traditional copper pot, deep, rich coffee flavour infused the savoiardi biscuit base while the classic creamy domed top was dusted with bitter coffee powder cutting through the richness of the cream.
As you can probably tell, I was very impressed with Masso’s new offering. From the subtle friendliness of the welcome to the perfect musical blend and outstanding food, we couldn’t have asked for a better brunch. I’ll certainly be going back.

OHLALA GOT BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE PORSCHE PANAMERA MANUFACTURER EDITION, A LUXURY SALOON THAT EXUDES GOOD LOOKS AND PERFORMANCE.
They say you can’t have it all but the 2025 Porsche Panamera Manufacturer Edition certainly comes close.
Collecting the keys to this hand-finished, hyper-personalised machine, we expected Porsche refinement. What we didn’t expect was for it to charm us like a charismatic villain in a Bond film. From the moment we stood in its presence, we knew this wasn’t going to be just a drive, it was going to be a mind-altering experience.
To call the Panamera handsome would be an understatement. In this Manufacturer Exclusive Edition, it’s more like haute couture on wheels. The SportDesign Package painted in stealthy black high-gloss reshapes the fascia and adds a sharper, more aggressive attitude. The Exclusive Design taillights and tinted HD Matrix LED headlights keep things distinctively Porsche but with an edge that’s all about craftsmanship. From the model designation in black to the side window trims and door handle inlays painted in body colour, the detailing is meticulous and undeniably bespoke.
The 21-inch Panamera Exclusive Design wheels, painted in black with highly polished surfaces, are both aggressive and elegant, like a tailored suit
with racing gloves. Paired with Exclusive Design taillights and silver sports exhaust tailpipes, this car looks ready to launch even while parked at valet.
Stepping inside, we were immediately greeted by a sensory hug of Barrique Club leather – soft, deep and unlike anything in the standard lineup. This isn’t just leather, it’s craftsmanship in tactile form.
The interior presented an effortless blend of German precision and Gulfstyle luxury – rich, detailed and built to impress. Thanks to the Matte Carbon Interior Package, every surface we touched, from the leather wrapped GT sports steering wheel, to the illuminated door sill guards, felt deliberate and indulgent. Even the air vent surrounds have been thoughtfully upgraded.
The overall cabin layout is driver-focussed, but not lacking character. To us, it felt more like a first-class cockpit, suited for everything from fast-track straights to downtown traffic.
We loved the Porsche crest on the headrests, a small but powerful reminder of the marque’s DNA, sitting right behind our perfectly positioned heads. The adaptive sports front seats are 18-way adjustable and offer the kind of support that says, “Take the long way home”.
"The interior presented an effortless blend of German precision and Gulf-style luxury – rich, detailed and built to impress."
Whilst admiring the interior artistry, we noticed the Exclusive Edition model quietly flexing its tech muscles. The passenger display was a particular talking point, giving our designated co-pilot full command of media, navigation and much more.
The true showstopper? The Burmester 3D High-End Surround Sound System that wrapped us in audio so immersive, it was like having our own private symphony on four wheels. It felt like we were listening to our favourite driving anthems for the first time.
Of course, Porsche has equipped, as standard on all models, wireless smartphone integration, seamless connectivity, a head-up display and a central display that feels more like a top-of-the-range tablet than a dashboard.
Porsche has added a layer of focussed urgency to the Exclusive Edition’s drive, by including the Sports Chrome Package. It has paired this with Porsche Active Suspension Management and adaptive air suspension and, let us tell you, the power and precision are almost unbelievable!
We found the eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox as sharp as ever, responding with such finesse that we began to think it was reading our minds. Add the sports exhaust tailpipes into the equation and it sounds as fast as it feels, without ever being brash.
Despite revelling in the Panamera’s grand touring comfort, make no mistake, we found nothing soft about this car’s performance. It corners like it’s on rails and hit highway speeds with astonishing grace. Yet somehow, it never seemed to take any strain whatsoever. A truly otherworldly driving experience.
Performance may be Porsche’s love language, but it also speaks fluent safety. Lane Change Assist, Surround View Active Parking Support and soft-close doors all come as standard, making city driving feel less like a chore and more like a mini privilege.
More of a convenience than a safety feature is the 90-litre fuel tank that gives you range for days, even if those days include high-speed runs through open desert highways.
Now, don’t get us wrong, the standard 2025 Porsche Panamera is already a phenomenal car. With its sleek design, cutting-edge tech and signature Porsche performance, it easily holds its own in the upper echelons of the luxury saloon league. However, once you’ve experienced the Manufacturer Exclusive Edition, there’s simply no going back. It takes everything that’s great about the Panamera and elevates it into something far more personal, more indulgent and, frankly, more irresistible.

Miss Ohlala brings to you this month’s wildest fashion and beauty moves.
Cowboy boots on the runway? Only Post Malone could make it happen. For his debut label, Austin Post, the rapper transformed Karl Lagerfeld’s former home into a Western haute couture showdown. Fringe, denim, leather and a model on horseback trotting through the salon. Forget merch, Post is officially riding his way into high fashion.
Maison Margiela, the house that famously avoids celebrity faces, has finally caved in and who better than Miley Cyrus to break the spell? The new campaign shows Miley draped in deconstruction and sheer drama, embodying the brand’s bold and experimental codes. It’s messy, it’s major and it’s definitely Margiela entering a new era.
Goodbye, Hollywood, Jaden Smith is packing his bags for Paris. Why? He has just been named men’s creative director at Christian Louboutin, where he’ll be in charge of shoes, leather goods and accessories. His first collection is set for Men’s Autumn and Winter 2026 Paris Fashion Week, and judging from his past looks, expect nothing short of wild.
Every brand is dipping into beauty these days, and Dyson isn’t missing out. After vacuums and hair tools, they’ve launched a new hair oil (part of the Omega range) that is lightweight, silicone-free and powered by sunflower oil grown on Dyson’s own farms. A leave-in spray joins the lineup, positioning the brand as a beauty expert, as well.
