Say Hello To October!

“Autumn, the season that teaches us that change can be beautiful.” “

Wow, there is so much going on this month, it’s hard to know where to start. The weather is finally cooling down and Qatar is gearing up for the cooler months ahead with a whole host of activities.

In our cover story, we’ve rounded up plenty of ways to make the most of the friendlier climate, from major sporting events such as football and parachuting to outdoor activities for all the family like cycling tours and picnicking. I absolutely love this time of the year – it makes the baking temperatures of the summer worthwhile.

You’ll also find loads of happenings in our Listen Up section, from live music to exhibitions. There’s really no doubt that this is a period when Qatar is determined to put on a show with something to suit every taste and budget.

Team fact has had a busy month with dining around town. We sampled Argentine flavours at Fuego; tastes of Brazil at Ipanema; lunchtime rituals at AtTeatude and a journey around the Mediterranean at Elissar. I must admit I’d be hard put to pick a favourite. Just as well I don’t have to.

My lucky colleagues have also been on the move, heading to Dubai and the Maldives – you can read about their adventures in the Travel Section. Must be my turn soon.

In Arts & Culture, we caught up with a snapper who’s been making his mark on the Doha scene and Mirco Panaccio shared the passions and inspirations behind his gorgeous images.

And elsewhere we’ve got news from the worlds of tech, motoring, fashion and grooming. It really is a packed edition. I hope you enjoy reading it.

RACK AND ROLL

Doha is about to swap football chants for the click of cue balls as the Qatar World Cup 10-Ball 2025 takes over from October 23 to November 2.

If you thought Qatar’s sporting calendar ended with tennis, football and padel, think again. This October, the capital turns its spotlight on a different kind of arena: the billiards table. Sanctioned by the World Pool Association and hosted by the Qatar Billiards & Snooker Federation, the tournament is already billed as one of the most prestigious in the discipline.

The numbers speak for themselves. With a record prize fund of USD450,000, the highest in 10-ball history, this year’s edition raises the stakes like never before. The qualifiers run from October 23 to 27, setting the stage for the draw and knockout rounds that follow, with the final scheduled for November 2. For fans, it’s a chance to see some of the best cue artists on the planet up close, as precision, psychology and pressure collide in pool’s most demanding format. Unlike eight-ball, 10-ball forces players into tighter margins and more tactical battles, making every frame a test of nerve as much as skill.

Slower than football, sharper than tennis and every bit as tense, the World Cup brings a fresh angle to Doha’s sporting mix. And whether you’re a seasoned follower or simply curious to see how high-stakes cue sports unfold, this is your chance to experience it up close. ✤

QATAR SCORES THE FINAL FOOTBALLING ACT

The decisive moments of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2025 will play out in Qatar, where continental champions will battle for one global crown.

Qatar is once again preparing to host the climax of a global football story as FIFA confirmed the country will stage the semifinal, the third-place play-off and the final of the Intercontinental Cup 2025. Over three nights this December (10, 13 and 17), the tournament will bring together the best of every continent, each chasing the same prize.

Asia’s hopes rest with Al-Ahli, newly crowned in the AFC Champions League Elite. Africa will be represented by Pyramids FC, while Oceania’s familiar contenders Auckland City return to the international stage. Mexico’s Cruz Azul come from CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football), and South America’s champion is still to be decided later this year. Europe’s place is already locked: Paris Saint-Germain, fresh from their Champions League triumph, will step directly into the final. Last year, Real Madrid lifted the inaugural trophy. This year, the Spanish giants are absent, leaving the door wide open.

Beyond the football itself, the tournament also underlines the country’s ambition to keep staging the world’s biggest events, with the same precision and flair that made 2022 unforgettable. If you were in Qatar during the World Cup, you know the feeling: the hum in the streets, the surge in the stands... That electricity is coming back, condensed into three nights of knockout football. ✤

LOST IN DOHA

Big-name DJs, open-air nights and a crowd ready to dance: Doha’s live music scene keeps raising the stakes, and Lost Frequencies’ return is the latest proof.

STEPS FOR AWARENESS

Lace up your trainers and wear pink: Aspire Park is turning into a sea of walkers on October 4, for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Mark your calendars, Doha: the city is about to pulse to the beats of one of the world’s most in-demand DJs. Belgian artist and producer Felix De Laet, better known worldwide as Lost Frequencies, touches down on October 3 for an open-air headline set at Doha Golf Club.

Doha isn’t new territory for him. Fans will remember his highenergy set in 2024, a night that left the city buzzing long after the final track. Known for era-defining hits like Are You With Me , Reality and the chart-storming Where Are You Now , he’s become a fixture on the global electronic circuit, booked from Coachella to Tomorrowland.

And the numbers tell the story: in March 2024, Are You With Me passed the one-billion streams mark on Spotify. Alongside Where Are You Now , it made Lost Frequencies the first Belgian artist with two tracks past that milestone, proof of how far his melodies travel.

This return leans into what he does best: melodic deep house, soaring vocal hooks and a feel-good momentum that turns open-air lawns into euphoric sing-alongs. Expect a night of dancing under the stars, hands in the air, and melodies that last long after midnight.

Tickets are from QR295. ✤

DECADES OF HITS

On October 17, Angham, hailed as the Voice of Egypt, takes the stage at Qatar National Convention Centre for a major concert in Doha.

Doha’s live music calendar gets a serious dose of star power this month as Angham brings her voice to the city. Since the late ’80s, she’s been one of the Arab world’s most consistent hitmakers, a singer whose melodies have carried heartbreak, hope and everything in between.

Launching her career in 1987 under her father’s mentorship, Angham quickly carved her niche with songs that blended classical Arabic phrasing with a modern pop sheen. Early staples like Sidi Wesalak and Yaretak Fahmni made her a household name, while Kolma N’arrab in 2007 proved she could reinvent herself when others faded, earning platinum sales and a whole new wave of fans. Nearly four decades on, Angham remains a rare force: both a radio regular and a streaming star. Her recent track Mettamena pulled strong numbers online, showing her ability to stay relevant in a digital-first world while holding onto the emotional depth that made her iconic.

On October 17, expect a career-spanning setlist: sweeping ballads like Omry Maak and Howa Enta Meen, dance-floor favourites like W Nefdal Norkos, plus a few surprises from her more recent releases. Few artists maintain such resonance over the years and now we get a rare chance to see just how she does it. Tickets from QR375. ✤

ROMANCE TAKES CENTRE STAGE

For the first time in years, Doha gets a taste of Lebanese pop royalty as Wael Kfoury brings his catalogue of hits to Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) this October.

Doha’s cultural calendar this year is crowded with heavyweight names, but October 16 is already circled in red. On that night, the QNCC will open its doors to Wael Kfoury, the Lebanese singer so often called the King of Romance, for a concert that blends nostalgia with pop polish.

For more than three decades, Wael has been a fixture of Arabic music. Since his breakthrough in the early 1990s, winning Studio El Fan, and releasing heartfelt ballads like Bhebak Ana Ktir and Ya Dalli Ya Rouhi , he has built a catalogue that soundtracked weddings, heartbreaks and radio charts across the region. Later hits such as El Bint El Awiye and Omri Kellou cemented his reputation as a voice both powerful and tender, marrying traditional ornamentation with mainstream appeal. What makes the singer enduring is also his ability to stay current. His 2021 single Kelna Mnenjar gathered millions of streams, proof that his ballads can still find a home in the playlists of a digital-first generation. Today, he moves easily between the gravitas of a romantic crooner and the sleek energy of modern Arab pop. Don’t miss the chance to hear the unmistakable voice that has carried the highs and lows of love for more than 30 years!

Tickets are priced from QR335. ✤

MEXICO IN QATAR A CULINARY FIRST

Fans of fierce flavours got a boost with the opening of the country’s first Chipotle Mexican Grill.

Launched by operator Alshaya Group at Villaggio Mall in Doha, the new restaurant spans over 280sq/m and is Chipotle’s Qatar debut. It is open from 10am to 11pm on weekdays and until 12am on weekends.

The brand only arrived in the Middle East in April last year, with its first outlet in Kuwait – the first entry into a new country in more than a decade. Since then, Alshaya has opened seven Chipotle restaurants in Kuwait, three in the UAE and now, its first in Qatar.

Alshaya Group CEO, John Hadden, said: "We are excited to bring Chipotle Mexican Grill to Qatar, marking a significant milestone in our partnership with this iconic brand. HOSPITALITY EXPO UPGRADED

From October 28 to 30, Hospitality Qatar marks its 10th edition at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC), bringing together the players shaping the region’s fastevolving hospitality sector.

A decade ago, Hospitality Qatar was just another date on the trade-fair calendar. Today, it’s one of the Gulf’s fixtures, a place where the region’s booming hospitality scene comes to swap ideas, showcase products and strike deals. The 2025 edition, set

WINGS TO SAUDI

Starting October 21, Qatar Airways will launch thrice-weekly flights from Doha to the Red Sea, unlocking Saudi Arabia’s most talked-about luxury destination for global travellers.

For years, the Red Sea was a name on glossy masterplans. Now it’s taking shape as one of the Middle East’s most intriguing new escapes. From October 21, Qatar Airways makes it easier than

for October 28 to 30 at the DECC, marks that 10-year journey with its biggest programme yet.

The timing feels right. Over the past decade, Qatar’s hotels, restaurants and leisure offerings have expanded at breakneck speed, fuelled by mega-events like the FIFA World Cup and a national tourism strategy determined to broaden the country’s appeal. Hospitality Qatar has grown in parallel, shifting from a simple showcase to what industry insiders now call a procurement hub, where ministries, developers and operators shop for everything from interiors and equipment to food innovations and travel services.

The 2025 edition puts that role in the spotlight. Expect cuttingedge exhibitions alongside conferences and workshops on sustainability, digitalisation and post-mega-event tourism models. The fair’s B2B matchmaking platform also returns, guaranteeing one-to-one access with procurement teams from ministries, airlines and hotel groups, a feature that’s become one of its main draws.

Adding to the prestige, Qatar Tourism is on board as official Destination Partner under the patronage of its chairman, anchoring the fair firmly in the country’s wider tourism push. For attendees, the message is simple: the last decade was about growth, the next one will be about setting new benchmarks. ✤

ever to get there, with three weekly flights direct from Doha into the Red Sea International Airport (RSI).

The appeal goes well beyond its beaches. The Red Sea destination covers more than 90 offshore islands, framed by coral reefs among the largest in the world and desert landscapes cut by mountain canyons. In the past two years, several luxury resorts have already begun welcoming guests, including properties on Southern Dunes and Ummahat Islands, setting the tone for what’s coming: Shura Island, the flagship development, with its 11 planned resorts, an 18-hole championship golf course and a rollout of dining, retail and cultural venues that will continue over the next few seasons.

Unlike other new destinations, RSI was designed with sustainability in mind, aiming for one million passengers annually by 2030 without compromising its ecological ambitions. The airport itself, inspired by the desert landscape, has already become an architectural talking point.

With Qatar Airways as the first global airline to connect it to more than 170 cities worldwide, the Red Sea is no longer just Saudi Arabia’s bold tourism experiment. It’s a real, bookable getaway. ✤

A FILM MUSIC LEGEND TAKES THE STAGE SEVEN LAYERS OF SHINE

For the first time, maestro Ilaiyaraaja will perform in Doha, bringing his five-decade catalogue of film scores to the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC).

Doha’s cultural season has a way of surprising, and this October it lands a coup: Ilaiyaraaja, the maestro of Indian film music, is coming to town.

On October 3, the QNCC will host the 82-year-old legend for what promises to be an evening of memory, melody and magnitude. For many in India, his name needs little introduction. Affectionately called Isaignani, ‘the sage of music’, Ilaiyaraaja has composed for more than 1,500 film scores across Tamil, Telugu and beyond. His career is a half-century chronicle of how cinema learned to sound modern: string sections stitched to synthesizers, folk refrains transposed into symphonies, electronic pulses layered beneath Carnatic ragas. Generations grew up with his scores and entire film industries reshaped themselves around them. Officially, the evening is billed simply as Ilaiyaraaja Live in Concert. But in practice, it feels like more: a chance to hear in person the voice of violins and synthesizers that so often only played through cinema speakers. And for Doha, it marks another leap in its evolving live-music landscape, adding South Asia’s most revered composer to a roster of international stars. No one is calling this a farewell, but when a giant with five decades of music behind him steps onto a Doha stage for the very first time, the sense of occasion is unmistakable. ✤

One of Doha’s brightest weeks is back from October 27 to November 1 as the ASJAD Jewelry Exhibition takes over AlHazm Mall for its seventh edition, bringing six days of sparkle to the city’s most theatrical venue.

Doha is polishing its place on the global jewellery map, and nothing shows it better than the ASJAD Jewellery Exhibition. Now in its seventh edition at AlHazm Mall, ASJAD has grown into a highlight of the city’s cultural calendar, gathering an edited mix of international maisons, Gulf brands and independent designers. A pavilion dedicated to Qatari talent also keeps the fair rooted in its surroundings, while global names bring the weight of established prestige. The result is a conversation between heritage and innovation, local craft and international style. The displays are as varied as they are refined: gold, diamonds, pearls, and rare gemstones, shaped into pieces that shift between timeless classics and bold contemporary design. For collectors, it’s a chance to see headline names. For curious visitors, an opportunity to discover jewellers rarely seen in Doha. And then there’s the setting. With its marble colonnades and Italian-inspired architecture, AlHazm Mall creates the perfect backdrop, while the steady buzz of collectors, stylists and families browsing, comparing craftsmanship and capturing details on film keeps the atmosphere alive throughout the day.

In just seven years, ASJAD has carved out its own space: selective, ambitious and distinctly Doha. More than a showcase, it’s a statement about where the city sees itself, and how brightly it wants to shine. ✤

Mondrian Doha is turning eight this October, inviting guests to celebrate years of style, culture and unforgettable experiences with a nostalgic twist.

Mondrian Doha is turning eight this month, and the celebrations promise to be a colourful throwback to the contagious energy of the 1980s. Since opening its doors in 2017, the hotel has become one of Qatar’s most dynamic lifestyle destinations, combining Marcel Wanders’ whimsical design, an award-winning ESPA and a host of exceptional dining and nightlife experiences which includes a Michelin select venue.

This year’s anniversary takes guests on a nostalgic journey through neon lights, disco beats and unapologetic 1980s’ style. From October 2, Mondrian Doha will host a series of special activations and limited-edition menus across its renowned venues.

Sushi lovers can kick off their 80s’ celebration at Morimoto Doha with the ‘Disco in Shinjuku Brunch’, featuring sparkling packages from QR350 and live entertainment from DJ Kate and a saxophonist. Guests can savour Japanese street food favourites – sushi, ramen, tempura and udon – all served with a fun disco twist. Later in the evening, the party continues with the ‘Disco in Shinjuku Dinner’, offering an à la carte menu that keeps the neon-lit energy alive, perfect for those looking to dance and dine through the night.

Hudson Tavern turns up the nostalgia with ‘Vice City Nights’, recreating a Miami Vice-inspired 80s’ playground. Think neon lights, retro arcade games, cotton candy and Hudson’s signature bites and drinks, available October 2 and 3, from 5pm to 2am.

For those with a sweet tooth, EllaMia presents ‘Sugar Rush 80s’, featuring candy-coloured cakes, bubble-gum ice cream, bright bagels and playful cupcakes, complete with a Polaroid photo wall. Guests can join the cake cutting and sparkling tower at 6pm on October 2.

GAME, SET, QATAR

From October 17 to 24, Doha becomes the centre of Asian padel as the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex stages the inaugural International Padel Federation (FIP) Asia Padel Cup.

RUN WAKRAH RUN

On October 25, the Al Wakrah Running Challenge returns as part of the Drob Qatar desert series and, for the first time, the race will be held at night.

Padel’s momentum in the Gulf gets another boost this autumn as Doha hosts the very first FIP Asia Padel Cup, a new continental national team competition organised in partnership with the Qatar Tennis Federation and Padel Asia.

The format is designed to give emerging nations competitive exposure while ensuring the strongest teams meet at the business end. A preliminary stage (October 17 to 19) will bring together 17 national squads ranked between 5th and 21st in the Asia-Oceania region, split into four groups. It’s do-or-die: only the group winners move on.

From October 20 to 24, the spotlight shifts to the Final 8, featuring the region’s top-ranked sides plus the qualifiers. Matches will be staged at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, already a benchmark venue for racquet sports, having hosted the FIP World Padel Championships in 2021 and 2024 as well as the Ooredoo Qatar Major Premier Padel.

The creation of the Asia Padel Cup also reflects FIP’s broader strategy: to solidify padel’s continental championships and support the sport’s rapid growth in Asia. A potential Phase 1 is already on the table for future editions, designed to include new federations as they join the movement. ✤

Floodlights, dirt trails and sea breeze: that’s the new formula for the Al Wakrah Running Challenge 2025, which debuts as a night race this year.

Set for October 25, the event transforms the usually sundrenched coastal course into an after-dark test of stamina and atmosphere.

Organised by the Qatar Sports for All Federation with Trails Sports Events Company, the race is part of the Drob Qatar series: five desert challenges that criss-cross the country from Al Zubarah to the dunes of Sealine. Al Wakrah’s slot is distinctive not only for the evening start but also for its accessible distances: 3km, 5km and 10km, plus an 800-metre run for children as young as three.

The route is straightforward but demanding: an out-and-back trail over compact dirt, punctuated by water stations at 1.5km, 2.5km and the finish line. Families, casual joggers and competitive runners alike are expected to line up, reflecting the federation’s mission to widen participation in sport.

Zooming out, this year also marks an expansion of the series itself. The 2025 calendar grows to five stops with the addition of the new Al Khor Challenge, underlining the federation’s ambition to take running culture into every corner of the country. ✤

A TASTE OF GREECE IN QATAR

Taverna-style eatery Mykonos has launched a new seasonal menu inspired by the spirit and flavours of the Greek Islands.

Set against a backdrop of olive trees, a serene poolside terrace and the sounds of live bouzouki music, Mykonos

Doha offers an authentic escape to the Greek islands – no passport required. Known for its modern take on a traditional Greek taverna, the venue now unveils a new seasonal menu crafted by Chef Nikolas Matsas, celebrating the vibrant ingredients and soulful cooking of the Mediterranean.

This season, the modern taverna introduces a thoughtful selection of dishes, masterfully curated by Chef Nikolas, a native of Greece who blends generations of culinary tradition with a refined, contemporary touch. The new menu is a celebration of both simplicity and depth – a journey through land and sea, built on seasonal produce, regional cheeses and freshly caught seafood.

Diners can expect to encounter marinated anchovies cured in citrus and olive oil and a light yet flavourful seabass salad dressed in dill oil and creamy mayo, finished with crisp peas and microgreens. Chargrilled octopus is elevated with sweet cherry tomatoes, valeriana leaves and mountain oregano, while baked hammour is enriched with wild greens, fresh dill and a velvety

avocado mousse. Heartier options include the Moschari Youvetsi, a comforting dish of slow-braised beef with orzo and melted Naxos gruyere, and the Agginara, a vibrant artichoke and fennel salad brightened by mint, apple and smoky Metsovone cheese. To end, golden loukoumades – Greek-style mini donuts drizzled with honey – offer a sweet, nostalgic finale.

With its warm, whitewashed interiors, elegant poolside setting and carefully curated grape list showcasing regional Greek offerings, Mykonos is more than just a place to eat – it’s a place to celebrate. Traditional plate smashing and the spirited rhythm of the Zorba dance add a theatrical energy to the evening, inviting diners to become part of the experience.

Mykonos is open daily from 12pm to 11.30pm. Discover the full menu at doha.intercontinental.com or follow @MykonosRestaurant. ✤

Camp the Qatari Way

Forget city lights: once October rolls in, the desert becomes the place to be. The Winter Camping Season, running until April 15, 2026, invites families, friends and adventure seekers to swap Doha’s skyline for tents, grills and starry skies. Pick your spot wisely: the central desert around Umm Al-Atham and Zekreet Coastal Reserve delivers that raw, open-space vibe; the south draws you to Sealine and Khor Al Adaid, where dunes crash into the sea; while up north you’ll find quieter family-friendly stretches. This new season comes with a real sustainability push as the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has introduced a Sustainable Environmental Camping Award, proof that a tradition deeply rooted in Qatar’s lifestyle is adapting to the times. Registration runs October 1 to 14 via the MoECC website and the Be’ah app, reopening from October 15 to November 15 for any areas still available. Last season saw nearly 3,000 camps across the country, and this year, it could be your turn. Load up the 4x4, grab your crew, and chase that sunset over the dunes.

Chill At The Souq

If you’ve ever braved Souq Waqif in the middle of the day, you’ll know the drill: five minutes of browsing, 10 minutes of fanning yourself in the shade, and another stop for water before you even make it to the spice stalls. Well, good news: those days are officially behind us. The iconic traditional market now has outdoor air-conditioning running through its alleys, meaning you can wander, shop and snack at any hour, without breaking a sweat. Stock up on souvenirs, catch some live music or sit down to a plate of freshly grilled kebabs: Souq Waqif is back on the daytime agenda!

Doha On Two Wheels

Doha’s landmarks take on a different vibe when you swap four wheels for two and Discover Qatar’s new cycling tour is the perfect excuse to try. With cooler evenings and just enough breeze to make four hours in the saddle a pleasure rather than a chore, this season is the ideal time to ride. The adventure kicks off at Rasen Sports in Porto Arabia with a gentle spin around the marina before heading to the stunning Gewan Island. From there, it’s on to Lusail Promenade, the striking Katara Towers and Al Maha Island, before looping back through Katara Cultural Village. Expect hills, mosques glinting in the sun, the waterfront, the amphitheatre and even a stop by Galeries Lafayette. It’s exercise, fresh air and a new perspective on Doha, all rolled into one.

Farm To Family

About an hour’s drive out of Doha, North Sedra Farm shows off a greener side of Qatar. Open from October to April, it’s the country’s first agritourism project and a seasonal favourite for families. Stroll through sun-dappled fields, fill your basket with freshly picked tomatoes and cucumbers and don’t miss a taste of the golden honey produced right on site. While little ones delight in bumper cars and rides on the mini train, adults can linger over coffee in shaded corners or wander the ‘Qatar Through History’ walk-through, a charming journey that brings the nation’s past to life.

Into The Earth

If you’ve ever wanted to feel like an explorer, start here. About 40km west of Doha, Dahl Al Misfir is Qatar’s deepest accessible cave, formed some 325,000 to 500,000 years ago and plunging 40 metres underground. The walls are made of gypsum, which means that when the light hits just right, the rock almost glows. Getting there takes a bit of adventure: the last stretch is off-road, so a 4x4 is your best bet. Once you arrive, don’t expect tickets or turnstiles, the cave is fenced but free to enter, with marked access. Step inside and the air cools immediately, the silence thickens, until the city feels far away. Bring sturdy shoes, an extra layer and a curious mind, plus someone who doesn’t spook easily. Also keep an eye out for migrating birds circling above.

Only For The Brave

On January 24, 2026, Qatar’s boldest test of endurance hits the desert once again and, trust us, this one’s on another level. Samla International is a 100km, all-in-one challenge that pushes athletes to swim, cycle, run and kayak their way across the landscape in under 12 punishing hours. The breakdown is brutal: 2km in the water, 49km on foot, 44km by bike, then a 4km kayak sprint to wrap it up. All of this unfolds against sweeping dunes and coastal stretches that are breathtaking to look at and merciless to race through. The word Samla comes from Qatari heritage, meaning strength and perseverance, which is exactly what you’ll need if you even dream of finishing. Sure, there’s prize money (USD30,000 for winners), but the real win is crossing that line with nothing left in the tank.

Sharp Shooters

Doha is on target to host one of the biggest competitions in shooting sports: the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Final, running from December 4 to 9. This is where the season’s best of the best gather: rifle, pistol and shotgun athletes who’ve already proved themselves across the year now face off for ultimate bragging rights. Expect 12 events packed into six intense days: men’s and women’s showdowns in air rifle (10m), rifle three positions (50m), air pistol (10m), rapid fire and pistol (25m), plus the big crowd-pleasers: trap and skeet. Only the top names make it this far, with slots earned through World Cup wins, World Championship medals, ranking points or defending champion status. Prize money sweetens the deal for gold, silver and bronze, but really, it’s about the title: ending the year as the one who held their nerve under the lights. For Doha, it’s also a dress rehearsal as the city will host the ISSF World Championships in 2026. GO: Visit issf-sports.org for more information.

Slide Into Meryal

Think you’ve ticked off every thrill in Doha? Time to reconsider. Out on Qetaifan Island North, Meryal Waterpark takes things to new heights. At 85 metres high, the record-breaking Icon Tower (Rig 1938) dominates the skyline as the world’s tallest waterslide tower. With 12 chutes launching from its frame, it also holds the Guinness World Record for the most slides on a single structure and leaves you with just one question: how brave are you feeling? We have to tell you, that’s just the teaser. Across the park you’ll find more than 50 rides and attractions, from high-speed plunges and twisting funnels to family-friendly splash zones, lazy rivers and wave pools. There’s even a dry rollercoaster if you’d rather stay on land (though it’s no less hair-raising). The best bit? The park has been cleverly designed so you spend less time climbing stairs and more time sliding, with elevators and conveyors quickly carrying you back to the top. Add in the sea views from the tower’s peak and you’ve got a waterpark experience that’s as spectacular as it’s refreshing. GO: Visit meryalwaterpark.com for more information.

Track Of Cool

Walking in Doha doesn’t usually come with a breeze, but Rawdat Al Hamama Park has definitely changed the game. Its star attraction is a 1.2-km air-conditioned track, the longest of its kind in the world, so you can run or stroll outdoors without dreading the heat. The park itself is vast and green, with wide lawns, more than a thousand trees from 21 different species and plenty of spots to pause and breathe. Families will love the playgrounds and open spaces, while fitness fans can make the most of dedicated workout areas and a cycling lane. There’s even an amphitheatre for outdoor events, giving the whole place a community feel. Head there for a morning jog, an evening walk or just to see how Qatar does ‘cool’ in the most literal way.

Wings In The Wind

From November 13 to 23, Qatar welcomes elite paratroopers from around the world for the 47th World Military Parachuting Championship, taking place at Umm Shkhout Air Field and organised by the International Military Sports Council (CISM). The competition brings active-duty military athletes, making it one of the most specialised and disciplined sporting events on the calendar. Expect the full package of parachuting skill: precision landings, acrobatic style routines and team jumps creating aerial formations, all under the strict regulations of the CISM. With over 40 editions behind it, the event has become a global showcase of resilience, focus and technical mastery. For Qatar, which already hosted the 44th edition in 2021, it’s another step in cementing its reputation as a stage for world-class sporting events across every discipline. Definitely one to keep an eye on this November. GO: Visit qatarairsports.qa for more information.

Your Green Escape

Dahl Al Hamam Park is back after a glow-up and it’s seriously worth the visit. Reopened on June 19 after a topto-bottom renovation, this green gem blends nature and community better than ever. What makes it stand out? The park centrepiece: a natural cave, surrounded by grassy slopes and shaded lawns that practically beg for a picnic. The upgrades have added plenty to explore: four kids’ play areas, a 900-seat open-air theatre, a celebration zone with a multi-purpose hall, plus a 390-metre jogging track, three outdoor fitness zones, three food and beverage kiosks and a basketball court. What was once just a scenic park has become a true community hub, a place to gather, play and relax outdoors all year round.

Zip Another Line

Looking for a thrill with a view? The adventure park at Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara has you covered with Qatar’s longest zipline. Suspended 21m above the water and stretching 275m across the bay, it’s a rush of pure adrenaline as you glide towards the island’s golden sands with the city skyline in the distance. And the experience starts before you even clip in: Banana Island itself is reached by a 30-minute catamaran ride from Al Shyoukh Port, setting the tone for a day that feels like a mini-escape. Whether you’re an adventure junkie or just looking to break out of your weekend routine, this is one Doha experience that definitely makes a splash.

A ROYAL MOTORING REFRESH

fact took the new-look Genesis G80 for a spin, discovering that comfort, character and class can carpool with ease in one mid-sized saloon.

Afacelift is always a delicate moment for a car – change too much and you risk losing what people liked, change too little and it fades into the background. The G80 3.5T Royal arrived freshly updated and we were eager to experience how all the elements came together.

A Fresh Face

Genesis didn’t try to reinvent the exterior design; it simply sharpened the highlights and refined the details. We appreciated the broader dual-weave mesh Crest Grille and the slimmer TwoLine headlamps with Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology, that together gave the G80 the sort of calm expression that says, ‘I know I look good, let’s not make a fuss’. At the rear, we noticed the three-dimensional contours of the bumper and how the mufflers had been replaced with a polished V-shaped chrome trim that added a luxurious feel. The new LED tail lamps sharpened things up further, while at the flanks, the 20-inch alloy wheels – shaped like aircraft propellers – had us pausing for a second look.

Interior Touches

Inside, the updates were immediately noticeable. The Nappa leather ergo motion seats were supportive and comfy, with ventilation, heating and a massage function so good, we half expected someone to turn up with a cucumber water and a hot towel. The UV-C steriliser in the armrest was impossible to ignore – we gave anything we could find a zap, because, well, why not?

The rest of the cabin carries the same attention to detail: highquality materials, clean lines and subtle ambient mood lighting that made the space feel calm and refined without ever being showy. The suede headlining, pillars and sun visors gave the interior a plush finish, complemented by real wood and aluminium garnishes and metallic door scuff plates, proof that the finer details weren’t overlooked.

In-Car Smarts

The upgraded G80 showed us how high-tech can feel effortless. From first entry, touch-sensitive door handles and welcome lights added a little flair, showcasing the amount of thought the brand has put into improving the user experience. Front and centre, the 27-inch display stretched across the dashboard. It didn’t feel like a screen bolted on as an afterthought, but effortlessly blended into its surroundings, becoming part of the cabin’s design language. Paired with the Genesis Integrated Controller, we could effortlessly navigate the crisp-looking menus without the usual finger-poking frenzy that leaves screens looking like a crime scene.

A fingerprint authentication system remembered our preferred settings, wireless charging ensured a cable-free cabin, the three-zone climate control kept us cool and the Bang & Olufsen premium sound system transformed our playlists into an immersive audio experience.

In the rear, dual 14.6-inch screens promised plenty of entertainment for children and other passengers while on the move.

Performance on Tap

Of course, looks and tech mean little if the drive disappoints. The G80 3.5T Royal quickly proved it was up to the task. Its twin-turbo V6 engine gave us more than enough muscle – 375hp, delivered smoothly through the eight-speed automatic transmission. When we pulled out to overtake on the highway, it felt almost casual, the torque arriving early and with conviction.

What struck us most, though, was the comfort. Even when we hit a few uneven patches along the way, the suspension system, complete with frequency-responsive structures in the front and rear shock absorbers, soaked them up.

The cabin was peaceful throughout the drive, thanks to the double-glazed windows and sound-absorbing tyres. It was quiet enough that our conversations naturally softened, as though the car itself dictated the tone.

One Step Ahead

In rush hour traffic, we put the driver-assist features to the test. Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist kept a watchful eye on other vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. Driver Attention Warning used grip sensors to accurately detect when the driver was holding the steering wheel (without nagging). Blind-spot Collision-Avoidance Assist warnings acted like an extra pair of eyes.

The highlight for us was Remote Parking Assist. We stepped out, pressed the button and watched the G80 park itself neatly between two oversized SUVs. A few passersby stopped to watch,

When we pulled out to overtake on the highway, it felt almost casual, the torque arriving early and with conviction.”

and we pretended not to notice – though we couldn’t resist feeling a little smug.

Genesis has also included several other assistance systems to ensure the safety of all occupants.

Final Thoughts

By the time our test drive wrapped up, the G80 3.5T Royal had won us over not just with its spec sheet but with how effortlessly it wove those impressive specs into the driving experience. It was stylish without trying too hard, powerful without being unruly and packed with tech without making us feel like we needed a manual to use it.

For us, that was the charm: a luxury saloon that didn’t need to be loud to make its point. The updates haven’t reinvented the G80 –they’ve sharpened it, building on its strengths, while keeping its character intact. ✤

A NEW ERA OF ELECTRIC DRIVING

BMW has introduced the new-generation BMW iX3, a fully electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).

With a new design language, sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, a range of up to 805km and a peak charging rate of 400kW, the new BMW iX3 sets new standards for efficiency and long-distance capability.

A new electronics and software architecture, including four ‘superbrain’ high-performance computers, makes the first Neue Klasse model more intelligent and better equipped for the future than ever. And the ‘Heart of Joy’ drivetrain and driving dynamics management technology enable unmatched handling dynamism and precision.

A defining element of the digital user experience is BMW Panoramic iDrive, which elevates intuitive operation and driver focus while an all-encompassing sustainability concept reduces the car’s product carbon footprint over its life cycle by more than 30%.

The first BMW X model of the new generation is all about interior space and a progressive lifestyle. At 4,782mm in length, 1,895mm wide and 1,635mm tall, the car has the hallmark proportions of an SAV.

The sculpted BMW kidneys reference the Neue Klasse of the 1960s in their vertical arrangement. When viewed from the side, large surfaces broken up by a small number of precise lines create a character-rich appearance. Flush glass surfaces and door handles are also features of the side view. The robust stature is underscored by body-colour wheel arches with subtly rectangular contours. The taillights extend well into the centre of the rear end, representing a horizontal interpretation of the signature BMW ‘L’ shape.

The interior has an uncluttered, reduced design, providing the ideal stage for the digital experience. Created specifically for electric cars, the vehicle architecture allows for generous space in all seats and the lines of the ‘floating’ instrument panel flow

directly into the large door trim panels.

A prominent influence in the horizontally arranged cockpit is the new control/operation system BMW Panoramic iDrive, based on the newly developed BMW Operating System X. It brings together displays, geometry and light and sound design into a holistic experience, customisable via the My Modes.

Precisely arranged interior worlds bring a unique and thoroughly distinct character to every equipment package. An attractive range of colours enables a perfect match between the interior tones and exterior paint finishes. As alternatives to the standardspecification Essential interior design in Vivid Grey with Econeer seat coverings, customers can also choose from three other attractive compositions.

The sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology developed for the Neue Klasse comprises highly efficient electric motors, fundamentally new high-voltage batteries with cylindrical cells and 800V technology. The BMW iX3 50 xDrive is powered by two electric motors, which together generate output of 469hp and 645Nm of torque.

The model accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 210km/h and the drive technology developed for the Neue Klasse reduces energy losses by 40%.

The high-voltage battery enables a range of up to 805km and a maximum charging rate of 400kW yields enough energy at an 800V direct current (DC) rapid charging station to add up to 372 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes. The high-voltage battery can charge from 10% to 80% in just 21 minutes.

Multiple safety systems are included as standard and there are numerous customisation options.✤

FACELIFT FOR FLAGSHIP SUV

The fourth generation of the Outlander, Mitsubishi’s flagship SUV, has received a complete design overhaul.

The Outlander's exterior showcases a confident and bold personality. The strong, horizontal-themed proportion from front to rear, is contrasted with broad surface lines paired with sharp edges and complemented by 20-inch alloy wheels and overhanging fenders that highlight the wide body.

The front face boasts Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield which aids in increasing protection and improving performance. The sharp looking front combination lights are positioned higher to provide better visibility for other drivers as well as pedestrians, while the low-positioned headlights provide better distant lighting. In terms of performance, the newly developed platform of the Outlander greatly improves collision safety and achieves a high level of steering stability. Available in 2WD and 4WD options, the Outlander runs on a 2.5L gasoline engine which produces an improved maximum power of 181/6,000hp/rpm, 8.9% better than the previous generation, with a maximum torque of 244/3,600nm/rpm.

Fuel efficiency has also improved by 2.6%, thanks to the eightspeed sport mode continuously variable transmission. The Outlander has several drive modes enabling selection of driving with six options for the 4WD and five for the 2WD. These include Normal, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow and Mud.

Inside, the linear instrument panel with a powerful horizontal tone gives the vehicle a spacious and roomy look. The interior colour variations of the P-Line feature genuine leather seats of light gray and black. The instrument panel and door trim are the same colour and real aluminum is used in the shift panel. Saddle tan accent colour and semi-aniline leather seats are also available as an option for the P-Line. The H-Line features black suede combination seats

and piano black interior material, while the M-Line offers light gray or black fabric material seats and piano black interior material. Roominess and overall comfort are enhanced by widening the body and increasing the legroom of the first and second-row seats. In addition, features such as seat heaters, three-zone automatic climate control and rear door sunshades are available depending on the trim.

A 12.3-inch full digital driver display equipped with Mitsubishi Motors’ first full-screen, full-colour liquid high-definition crystal display shows a variety of content. Another high-contrast meter is a seven-inch multi-information display that shows simple arrow navigation in the central information display. Further available options provide connectivity with Android and Apple CarPlay.

Mitsubishi Motors has for the first time installed a windshieldtype 10.8-inch Head-Up Display (HUD) to project in full colour critical information required for driving.

The Outlander enjoys a 10-speaker premium Bose sound system. Combining large door woofers with dual subwoofers provides a powerful deep bass and a high-quality sound like a live performance.

The Outlander is a three-row, seven-seat family SUV, which is unique in its class. The seats can be flexibly arranged with multiple configurations to suit the number of passengers and accommodate their luggage. It also comes with seven airbags and a wide range of safety features, including forward collision mitigation system and adaptive cruise control.

The Outlander is available at Qatar Automobiles Company, the authorised general distributor of Mitsubishi Motors in Qatar, at its showrooms in Doha and Alkhor. ✤

We last chatted a few years ago and discussed your love for dance and your involvement in Qatar’s entertainment scene. What have you been up to since then?

Since then, my journey has been about growth, expansion and creating opportunities. Candela Entertainment has evolved into a hub for talent, culture and experiences – from introducing international acts to nurturing local performers, to building signature concepts such as The Backyard and La Vista. I’ve also been focusing on bridging cultures through entertainment, bringing unique shows to Qatar while exporting Qatari-inspired productions abroad.

Beyond Candela, I’ve been consulting and collaborating on large-scale hospitality and entertainment projects, where my role is to align creative vision with operational execution. It’s about ensuring that the guest journey – from music to service to environment – is curated to the highest standard.

How are you seeing the entertainment and hospitality scene in Qatar developing and what do you see as the coming trends for the future?

Qatar has grown into one of the most dynamic entertainment destinations in the region, particularly after the FIFA World Cup. The future is all about fusion: blending international influences with local heritage, and creating immersive, experience-driven concepts. Audiences are seeking more than a show – they want storytelling, atmosphere and interaction. I see strong growth in boutique live venues, cultural collaborations and hospitality concepts that seamlessly merge dining, music and performance.

As an entrepreneur yourself, you are very much involved in helping others develop their own business ideas. How do you go about this and are there any ‘solid gold’ must-dos you can share when starting a business?

For me, mentorship and collaboration are key. I always tell entrepreneurs:

● Start with purpose. Know why you’re doing it, because passion carries you through the tough days.

● Build a strong foundation. Get your structures, finances and contracts in order early.

● Stay adaptable. Qatar’s market is fast-moving, so flexibility is your biggest advantage.

● Surround yourself with the right people. Talent and trust are everything in this industry.

What are three things in Qatar that, in your opinion, visitors shouldn’t miss?

Qatar is far from quiet – there’s always something happening. For outdoor live experiences, The Backyard Doha is a must, with international and local artists performing under the stars.

For nightlife, head to La Vista 55. Set on the 55th floor with skyline views, it’s a blend of dining, drinks and a global music journey –from Latin and Arabic fusion to Brazilian, Balkan and commercial hits. No matter where you’re from, you’ll hear something familiar. And if you want to dive in yourself, Candela Academy offers dance and music classes. Salsa lovers will especially enjoy Salsa & Candela, a vibrant community with three weekly salsa nights.

Beyond these, Qatar shines with bars, live music venues and fine dining – all built on a tradition of warm hospitality.

On a more personal note, how do you like to relax during your downtime in Qatar?

My happiest moments are by the sea, whether it’s sailing, swimming or simply watching a sunset. I also love hosting friends and family at home – cooking, music and laughter are my ways to recharge. And, of course, dance is still my first love. Even in downtime, you’ll often find me moving to music, because it reminds me why I started this journey in the first place. ✤

OF CULINARY AND CULTURE

Shane Earl Louw, Regional Executive Chef, Gastronomica Middle East, tells us what drew him to Qatar and shares some of his favourite foodie pleasures.

After many years working in your native South Africa, what decided you to make the move to the Middle East?

Culture. It was a country and culture I had very little knowledge of, with food being widely ranging - it was a no brainer for the next step in my career. Personally, the fact that I was stepping into the unknown I found very appealing. It is never too late to evolve as a chef, you never stop learning, the Gulf presented a massive learning experience, and rumour has it the Karak is to die for.

Please tell us about the brands you look after at Gastronomica and what your role entails.

I have been fortunate enough to have worked in and managed most of the brands in Gastronomica across four countries in the GCC. I started my career in OFK, then managed Lazy Cat and B+F, and currently Burger Boutique, Milk Bun, Fat Pie and Nomad.

On a personal note, what is your guilty food pleasure?

Chicken liver pate… I will eat it until my subconscious tells me I am a terrible person and that I should make smarter choices in life… then I have some more.

If you could only recommend one dish across your brands that everyone should try, what would it be?

Too many to choose from, it is like trying to identify your favourite child. So, I’ll break it down per brand.

Burger Boutique – the classic Solar Gravity burger. Milk Bun –the Truffle Swiss burger. B+F – definitely the Grilled Rib Eye steak. Lazy Cat – the Fluffy Japanese Pancakes. Fat Pie – the Rony, a classic pepperoni pizza. Nomad – the Pulled Brisket sandwich. OFK – the Whole Seabass and the Basque Cheesecake to finish. There you have it… my last dinner if I was on death row. ✤

BORN TO GRILL IN DOWNTOWN DOHA

Call it a mood more than a menu: the glow of the fire, the hush of leather chairs, plates that arrive with confidence but never fuss. Fuego, Sirine Errammach discovered, feels less like dinner out and more like slipping into a little Argentine hideaway in the heart of the city.

Qatar has a way of surprising you: a simple night out suddenly feels like a plunge into another country. This time, the ticket is to Argentina, courtesy of Fuego at JW Marriott Marquis City Center Doha. Just one floor above the city’s buzz, the mood changes instantly. Outside it’s neon and restless; inside, the tones are warm, earthy and composed. Some corners are dressed with deep brown parquet that gleams under soft light, others with a bold red-and-cream spiral carpet that adds movement underfoot. Dark wood panelling wraps the room, while leather high-back chairs and tufted suede seats strike a balance between clubby and comfortable.

Overhead, circular chandeliers hang like halos, their soft glow pooling across the tables. Along one side, the open kitchen brings a spark of theatre, chefs moving in rhythm beneath a mural sketched with steaks and knives, reminding you that at its core, this place is all about fire and grill. Elsewhere, horse sculptures and framed artworks nod to Argentina’s equestrian spirit, subtle details that reinforce Fuego’s South American soul.

Because no journey is supposed to start on an empty glass, we begin with mocktails. At Fuego, they’re part of the script, each one crafted in tribute to the country’s regions. La Linda is pure sunshine: orange, pineapple, passion fruit and lemon layered into a glass that smells like summer before you even taste it. The first sip is bright and zesty, the citrus giving a little spark at the edges, while the tropical fruits round it out into something soft and golden. Sweet, but never cloying, it feels like that first sip you take on holiday, when everything slows down. Los Andes heads in the opposite direction: the yerba mate infusion brings a grassy, almost earthy depth, blackberries add a tangy kick, lime keeps it sharp and honey smooths it all into place.

Starters With Soul

A good warm-up before our starters land on our table. First, the Tomato & Aji Amarillo Soup shows up in a deep black bowl, and it looks like it means business. The colour is a vivid brick red, broken up with little pools of bright green herb oil. First spoonful, pure tomato. Not the watery kind, but the ripe, slow-cooked version that actually tastes of summer. Then the aji amarillo kicks in, more sunshine than fire, giving heat without hijacking the flavour. Goat’s cheese softens the finish; it melts into the soup and adds a gentle tang. The texture? Spot on: silky, creamy, never heavy. Then comes the Empanada Pampeana: homemade golden halfmoons with perfectly crimped edges, the pastry carrying that slightly fried sheen that promises crunch. Steam curls out as we cut in. The Argentinian Angus beef filling is generous and juicy, full of savoury depth. On the side, llajua, a traditional pepper-andtomato sauce with a smoky kick, does the rest, adding freshness and a lick of heat.

From the Grill and the Sea

Fuego is a steak house at heart, and we lean into it. Our pick: an Australian Wagyu fillet, medium rare. The plate is clean and unfussy: two thick medallions with a firm sear, a spoon of chimichurri on top, a pinch of sea salt and a few grilled vegetables on the side. Because it’s fillet, the texture stays delicate, buttery

without being heavy. The knife slides through easily and the herb sauce adds a sharp, garlicky lift. As for your side choice, we say this with love: order the Corn Ribs and accept that your cutlery will be useless for a minute. They come charred and fragrant, glistening from a brush of herb butter, and dusted with smoked paprika that perfumes the air. On the side, a chipotle aioli keeps things grounded: creamy, cool, with just enough fiery kick heat. You snap one free, take a bite, and it’s everything at once: sweet kernels, a bit of chew, a lick of char. Some dishes are designed to be shared; this one forces you to! If steak isn’t your calling, Fuego makes sure the menu doesn’t stop there. We also tried the Pulpo Parrillero, their take on octopus from the grill. Seared properly so the edges pick up a light crispness, it’s set over roasted baby potatoes with flicks of chimichurri here and there and a confident swipe of Romesco sauce, pepper-forward and slightly nutty on the plate, giving the octopus two very different companions.

Sweet Endings

When it comes to dessert, Fuego plays it safe in the best way: rooted in tradition, but indulgent enough to feel like a treat. Two classics win. First, the Flan Mixto, exactly the sort of classic that ties a meal back to memory. The custard has the right tremble: smooth and glossy, holding just enough to keep its shape while still quivering at the spoon’s touch. The caramel sauce pools generously around it, with a faint bitterness that lingers. On top, a dollop of whipped cream lightens things, while a spoonful of dulce de leche adds that unmistakable Argentine sweetness. Next to it, the Hazelnut Chocolate Soufflé feels more international in spirit. A warm chocolate base rises soft and steady, not as airy as a classic French soufflé, not as dense as a molten cake, somewhere in between. Around it, crumbled chocolate ‘soil’ gives

crunch, a few strawberry quarters add brightness and, on top, crisp praline tuiles provide both structure and roasted nuttiness. A scoop of cool vanilla cream slowly melts down the side, setting up that hot-cold contrast that makes every spoonful satisfying. If, like us, a single dinner isn’t enough to satisfy your curiosity, Fuego has more up its sleeve. Fridays are for Verano Brunch, where the room shifts gears into a livelier mood: Argentinian flavours spread across the table, premium cuts hit the grill and the energy picks up with live rhythms from Chicas Melao. And midweek, Wednesdays bring Asado Night, a nod to Argentina’s most cherished ritual. Think fire-grilled feasts straight from the Josper, dishes passed around the table and that unmistakable smoky warmth that makes you want to linger a little longer. ✤

CHURRASCO FEVER

Ipanema serves up Brazil right here in West Bay, at Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel. Sirine Errammach headed there for sights, scents, flavours and a crowd that never stops buzzing.

Ready to swap Qatar for a taste of South America? Step into Ipanema and the illusion is instant. Warm timber floors and low leather chairs anchor us in, while cascades of greenery spill from above, softening the edges. Our eyes catch the walls first: murals streaked in bold colours, graffiti flashing against polished wood, the whole space pulsing with energy.

We also spot carnival flourishes in the corners: feathered headpieces, bright masks, little nudges that remind us this is celebration, even midweek. Then our ears take over. A small stage lights up as the trio of musicians step forward, voices rolling out in harmonies that weave through the room, a soft soundtrack to the night.

We’re swept up in it. Servers weave past our chairs, glasses are clinking, laughter spilling around us. And then it hits: the smell. Smoke, fat, spice. Skewers of beef, chicken, even pineapple turn slowly over flame, fire licking their edges. West Bay already feels a world away.

Curtain Up

Starters, sides and desserts line the buffet, a spread as colourful as it is tempting. The Acarajé is the first mouthful to jolt us awake. These golden fritters arrive crisp and proud, the crust giving way to a soft, almost creamy centre. There’s a rustic weight to them, earthy and filling. And just as we think we’ve had enough of crunchy temptation, along comes the Coxinha de Frango. Tear-shaped parcels of dough, fried until they crackle, open to reveal shredded chicken bound with cream cheese. They’re rich, indulgent, the sort of snack you mean to resist but keep reaching for anyway.

Beyond the nibbles, the buffet dives straight into Brazil’s soul food. The Escondidinho de Carne Seca is pure comfort: salty strands of

dried beef hidden under a manioc (cassava) purée so silky it could outdo mashed potato. It’s rustic and hearty, warming us from the inside out, and we can’t help but go back for another spoonful. Craving seafood instead? The chef’s got you covered with the Bobó de Camarão. Prawns as plump as thumbs, sweet and tender, swim in a sauce of cassava and coconut milk so thick and velvety it borders on decadent.

Fire On The Table

And yet, that was just the warm-up. The real show kicks off when the grill’s bounty makes its entrance. One by one, the passadores sweep through the room, long steel spits still humming with heat. They weave between diners like dancers in a choreographed routine, knives glinting, curls of smoke rising in their wake. The pace is ours to set. On the table lies a small round card, green on one side, red on the other. The rule couldn’t be clearer: green means ‘bring it on’, red means ‘I am done’. We flip ours to green and, almost instantly, the parade swings our way.

A towering ribeye (contrafilé) arrives first. The server leans the skewer, blade poised, and carves directly in front of us. The cut drops onto our plates, still sizzling from the grill. Smoky, robust, edged with char, it holds the perfect juiciness at the centre. Then comes the picanha, Brazil’s undisputed champion. A golden cap of fat crowns the beef, crackling as it falls in slices. The meat yields softly under the knife, the fat dissolving like butter and leaving behind a lush, almost mellow finish. This is churrasco at its best: elemental, primal, completely addictive.

To balance it all, pineapple. Spinning over flame, dusted with cinnamon, it lands steaming and dripping onto the plate. Pure, and utterly irresistible.

The rhythm doesn’t let up and plates keep refilling… Until at last we flip the card. After all, how could we not save room for dessert?

A Sweet Carnival

Past the skewers, the buffet opens up into a riot of colour. Trays of churros still warm from the fryer sit beside bowls of glossy dulce de leche and molten chocolate. Cakes lean temptingly under their caramelised crusts: tres leches dripping with cream, pineapple upside-down still sticky from the pan, torta alemã with its swirls of whipped frosting. Everywhere we look, it’s a whole carnival, only this time for anyone with a sweet tooth.

We don’t even know where to start, so we let instinct lead. First stop: Brigadeiros, the country’s favourite treat. Little chocolate truffles rolled in rainbow sprinkles, bright as confetti. They look playful, almost like something from a children’s party, but the first bite tells another story: dense, fudgy, a little chewy, with all the richness of condensed milk.

Next up, passion fruit steals the show in Mousse de Maracujá: tiny glasses glowing yellow under the lights, capped with a soft layer of cream and the odd berry for contrast. The spoon sinks in with barely any resistance, and the taste lifts straight off the tongue: airy yet sharp, tropical without tipping into syrupy. A good one to reset the palate after all that grill smoke.

Last but far from least, the local take on flan: Pudim de Leite Condensado, wobbling on the plate like it owns the room. Silky yet weighty, dripping caramel, it melts into velvet indulgence, carried by condensed milk’s creamy depth. One spoonful too many, and still we want more. Brazil has us hooked, Ipanema made sure of that. ✤

A LOUNGE THAT MAKES YOU FORGET THE CLOCK

Sirine Arrammach stepped into AtTeatude at Alwadi Hotel Doha - MGallery Collection to discover a venue that’s become a go-to in Msheireb with quick bites, indulgent desserts and an atmosphere built for lingering.

Doha is full of cafés and lounges, yet few manage to feel personal. AtTeatude does, and it might just be our new favourite. Tucked inside the Alwadi Hotel Doha - MGallery Collection, it strikes that rare balance of calm and flexibility. Part of its charm is how naturally the atmosphere invites you to slow down. Step inside, and details do the rest: geometricpatterned carpets in muted greys and blues cover the floor, high ceilings are softened by warm lighting, marble tables catch the light and armchairs in soft beige and pale teal invite you to sink in, almost without noticing. Overhead, lantern-style lights cast a warm glow, softening the tall ceilings, while the walls mix wood panelling with clean modern lines.

It’s the kind of setting that adapts easily: a morning coffee, a quick bite at noon, an afternoon tea catch-up or even a lazy evening drink, all feel perfectly at home here.

Lunchtime Rituals

When we drop by at lunchtime, the room is already buzzing with office workers drifting in from the surrounding towers, drawn by the promise of AtTeatude's Express Lunch.

The concept is simple but effective: generous portions, a balance between hearty and healthy. And if you’re counting, you can even pick your dish by checking the calories printed directly on the menu. Some regulars take it a step further, phoning ahead so their meal is ready the moment they arrive… Now that’s efficiency. Very Msheireb!

Our choices show how wide the range can go. First up, the

Caprese Salad. Predictable? Maybe. But here, it’s done with a little more care. Soft mozzarella di bufala, juicy tomatoes at their peak, a drizzle of olive oil with a peppery edge… Light and refreshing, it’s the kind of plate that makes you think: sometimes the classics are classics for a reason.

Then comes the Spinach & Cheese Ravioli, and the mood shifts completely. Pillowy pasta parcels, filled with ricotta and spinach, served with garlic butter. Comforting, indulgent, but not in a way that makes you want a nap at your desk.

A Signature Worth Knowing

Even before we open the menu, it’s clear: the Alwadi Club Sandwich is the house signature, the one thing you can’t skip. So of course, we go for it.

At first glance, it looks familiar enough: stacked layers of bread and filling, the universal comfort food. But this isn't your average hotel club. The base is sourdough, toasted to just the right crunch, structured enough to hold the generous filling without ever feeling heavy. Three layers tall, it’s substantial but not clumsy, neatly built so every bite delivers the full combination. Inside, there’s tender chicken breast, a fried egg with a soft centre, crisp beef bacon, tomato, lettuce, Emmental cheese and a hint of truffle mayonnaise binding it all together. It’s saucy in just the right way, enough to coat the bread, never so much that it overwhelms. And then, of course, the French fries on the side. Golden, wellseasoned, and far too addictive for us to resist. We keep reaching back for just one more, the way you do when they’re exactly as they should be: crisp on the outside, fluffy inside, impossible to leave alone.

Sweet Temptations

We think we’re full, but our eyes still drift, as they always do, to the pastry counter. AtTeatude doesn’t let you forget about dessert. It sits there at the far end of the room like a quiet invitation, impossible to ignore.

Inside, there’s a spread that covers both classics and playful creations. Rows of eclairs, fruit tarts layered with berries and kiwi, chocolate cakes… And then there are the showstoppers: towering cakes decorated with painted flowers, sculpted chocolate and bursts of colour. Clearly designed for special occasions, but even as a backdrop they add drama to the room.

We go for the Chocolate Hazelnut, long and sleek, dressed with swirls of chocolate cream, whole hazelnuts, golden flakes and tiny caramel pearls scattered around the plate. Once we cut into it, the outer layer gives way to a fudgy core, smooth and dense without being cloying. The hazelnut adds crunch and warmth, a nutty counterpoint to the richness of the chocolate. Then comes the play of textures: creamy, crisp, almost airy in parts. What we love most is that it isn’t overly sweet, the kind of dessert you can actually finish and still want another bite.

Sip and Slow Down

Lingering over the drinks menu isn’t the plan, yet AtTeatude makes it hard not to. On one side, a lineup of colourful mocktails; on the other, a ‘healthy corner’ of juices designed not just to refresh but to nourish. The Berry Paradise stands out for us: blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, peach, lemon juice, mint leaves and a

splash of sparkling water. Fruity, bright and refreshing, the sort of palate cleanser you’re grateful for after you’ve had just one French fry too many.

With food this comforting and drinks this playful, AtTeatude has a way of stretching time. You come for a quick stop and, before you know it, an hour, or two, has gone by. That’s usually the best sign a place has won you over. ✤

CROSSING CULINARY BORDERS WITHOUT LEAVING QATAR

Forget the plane ticket, Sirine Errammach found Elissar Mediterranean Grill turns dining into travel, sweeping you from North Africa to Southern Europe and back to the Levant, all in one seamless evening.

Craving a journey? No need to leave Qatar. Step into Le Royal Méridien Place Vendôme Lusail and you’ll find Elissar Mediterranean Grill, ready to take you from Morocco to Athens, with pauses in Spain, Tunisia, Lebanon, France… a whole coastline mapped onto a menu. The setting echoes that spirit: a burgundy door, lanterns glowing softly. Inside, it feels part Mediterranean villa, part Parisian brasserie, with marble floors, patterned tiles, brass accents and olive-green banquettes scattered with ochre cushions.

The first stop? France. Mini baguettes land on the table still warm, their crusts crackling as we tear them open, steam escaping. The crumb is soft, perfect for soaking up the herb-scented olive oil on the side. Simple, deliberate and exactly the kind of detail that tells us we’re in good hands. Hands reach in, pieces vanish one after another, and the wooden board is emptied almost as quickly as it arrives.

A perfect time for our drinks to appear! The Cucumber and Mint Cooler is sharp and refreshing, while the Sweetheart goes the other way: deep pink, watermelon at its core, rounded with maple and a hint of rose. Both vanish in an instant.

Small Plates, Wide Horizons

At the heart of every Mediterranean table is the idea of sharing. Food comes in waves, plates are placed in the centre and everyone reaches in. Elissar Mediterranean Grill’s new Bites to Share menu leans into that tradition. Greece sets the tone with Panko-Crusted Halloumi, golden and glistening, the crust

shattering as the knife goes in, releasing a whiff of hot, salty cheese. The halloumi is firm and chewy in that unmistakable way, with the twist of caramelised fig jam. One bite turns into three, and soon only crumbs remain.

Just as we settle into that indulgence, the table shifts eastward. The Chicken Musakhan Rolls carry us toward Palestine, reimagining a traditional dish in a lighter, hand-held form. The pastry is paper-thin, fried until it’s crisp and flaky, breaking into shards the moment we crack through it. Inside, the chicken is shredded and juicy, seasoned with sumac that adds its signature lemony tang. Dunk it into the cucumber yoghurt dip on the side and the flavours soften. They’re such a hit they circle the table twice and vanish without a trace.

Now it’s Lebanon’s turn to take the lead with the Mini Lamb Kofta. Served hot and smoky, the scent of the grill clings to the meat. Each kofta is tender, well-seasoned, tucked into little flatbreads with a drizzle of tahini yoghurt. Pickled carrot and cabbage cut through with acidity and crunch, while the creamy aubergine adds depth and a velvety finish. They’re small, yes, but punchy and irresistible.

Fire, Smoke and Finesse

By the time the kofta are gone, the table carries the aftermath of flavours from different countries: sauces streaked, crumbs scattered, a smoky perfume still hanging in the air. Then the Main Menu takes centre stage, led by the Grilled Lamb Chops Paidakia, which steal the spotlight the second they hit the table. Thick chops rest on warm lavash, juices already seeping into

the bread. Around them, fire-scorched vegetables glow with caramelised sweetness, while a whole bulb of garlic, roasted to golden softness, waits to be pressed out like butter. The lamb is smoky, herb-crusted, charred at the edges so the aroma of grill and fat hits before we even taste it. Inside, it stays pink and tender, almost buttery. Semi-dried tomatoes bring just enough tang to cut through, keeping the balance sharp and lively. Next to it, the Grilled Sea Bass Fillet is a study in contrast. Where the lamb is rustic and bold, the seabass is refined and precise. The skin is burnished and crisp, snapping as the fork goes in, while the flesh underneath stays pearly, moist and delicate. It sits in a generous pool of beurre blanc, lifted by chimichurri and its herbal sharpness. On top, a spoon of olive tartare crowns the fillet, bringing briny depth, while a fennel salad on the side adds crunch and a whisper of anise. The kind of dish you keep going back to for ‘just one more bite’, until suddenly there’s nothing left but a smear of sauce.

Sweet Méditerranée

Half the Mediterranean is behind us, and there’s more to come. Time for the finale, beginning with the Baklava Tart. A perfect bridge from savoury to sweet, it layers the crunch of caramelised walnuts, the stickiness of honey syrup and a layer of frangipani cream that smooths it all out. On its own it could verge on heavy, but the frozen yoghurt on top pulls it back – tangy, cooling, refreshing. It’s familiar, yes, but also a smart way of reimagining something we’ve all tasted countless times.

The same goes for the Kunafa: golden threads of pastry forming a crisp crown over molten cheese that stretches with every forkful. Syrup seeps into the base while pistachios scatter across the top and a scoop of vanilla ice cream melts slowly into the warm layers. Decadent, sticky, messy… In the best possible way! One of those desserts that’s gone in a flash, leaving you wondering how you ended up eating more than you planned.

Other options include a Fruit Platter, the Elissar Chocolate Cake with candied orange or the Pumpkin Panna Cotta. The real dilemma? Not finishing them, that part’s easy, but choosing which one makes it to your plate. ✤

NATURE’S PLAYGROUND IN THE MALDIVES

With twin islands Chill and Play setting the stage for adventure, relaxation and everything in between, Apple Sharma experienced the reimagined luxury of Niyama Private Islands Maldives.

The Maldives had long been on my bucket list, a picture of paradise I’d often dreamt about. So, I was ecstatic when I finally had the chance to make it happen. The anticipation of turquoise waters, swaying palms and soft sands filled my imagination as I boarded the flight to Malé with my partner, bound for Niyama Private Islands Maldives – a luxury retreat made for relaxing or exploring on your own terms.

At Velana International Airport, Niyama’s ‘Welcome Host’ whisked us away to the resort’s private seaplane lounge –a calm yet plush space where we relaxed before boarding our first ever seaplane ride. Utterly mesmerised, I stayed glued to the window throughout the 45-minute flight, watching the stunning teal-green islands unfold beneath us like a living postcard.

Touchdown in Paradise

Landing at Niyama’s dock, we were welcomed by the lovely Marketing & Communications Manager, Anjelee Dabydoyal, and her team. The first impression was instantly cinematic, like we’d wandered onto the set of the popular TV show, White Lotus! Niyama has no traditional reception – instead, each guest is paired with a ‘Thakuru’, a personal assistant on call via WhatsApp. Ours was the delightful Shammu, who welcomed us with ice-cold fruit slushies before taking us on a buggy tour.

Dubbed Nature’s Playground, Niyama takes your breath away with its pristine beaches, lush greenery and warm waters in every shade of turquoise. Secluded on its own private peninsula and spread across two islands – Play and Chill – the newly refurbished Niyama is home to 134 villas and pavilions, 10 dining experiences and even its own surf wave. Our home for the stay was a Deluxe Beach Pool Villa on Chill, where Shammu checked us in and took our dietary preferences. Playful dolphin art greeted us at the door, and inside a beautifully arranged welcome tray with nonalcoholic bubbly and delicious treats awaited. From a hand-written message on the mirror by General Manager, Hafidh Al Busaidy, to matching ‘Chill Play’ flip-flops and hats, every thoughtful gesture made us feel right at home. With a breathtaking ocean view framed by swaying palms, our villa featured direct beach access, a plunge pool, a private sundeck and al fresco bathing with outdoor showers and a freestanding tub. Balancing stylish details with homely comforts, the king bed felt like sleeping on clouds, while extras like free wi-fi, a Nespresso machine, large TV and complimentary ice cream and popcorn (my favourite!) added charm.

After a quick unpack, Shammu collected us for dinner at Tribal, an open-air restaurant celebrating African and Central and South American cuisines. Flickering torches lit a path through the jungle canopy, guiding us to our table. From ostrich and boerewors to lobster on an open flame, the menu offered exotic dishes with bold flavours. Sitting under the stars, with lively music and the sound of crashing waves, I enjoyed some of the best Afro-Latin veggie dishes I’ve ever tried.

A Taste of Adventure

The next morning, we set off for breakfast on our bicycles – provided to all guests and personalised with our names. Pedalling along palm-lined paths with the ocean breeze on our faces was the perfect wake-up. At Epicure, an allday dining restaurant overlooking a stunning infinity pool, we were welcomed with fruit smoothie shots before making our way to the buffet. With fresh pastries, tropical fruit, made-to-order eggs, salads, Asian dishes and even a mimosa station – we were thoroughly spoilt for choice. Cycling back, we stopped at Pump, the 24-hour gym equipped with state-of-the-art machines. With a promise to return another time, we headed instead to Drift Spa for a 60-minute Niyama Signature Massage. Combining Hawaiian, Japanese and Thai techniques with aromatic oils and the sound of real ocean waves, it was unlike any spa experience I’ve had before.

Suitably relaxed, it was time for underwater lunch at Subsix, Niyama’s famed restaurant six metres below the surface. A pontoon boat took us half a kilometre out to sea, docking at Edge, an exclusive overwater dining venue. Descending a three-tier staircase lit by coral-like chandeliers, we entered another world as we stepped into Subsix, to sample the world’s first underwater Nikkei tasting experience. Dining submerged beneath the waves, with schools of fish gliding past the windows, was simply surreal. The spectacular set menu with paired Japanese drinks complemented the setting perfectly – definitely one of the main highlights of our stay.

The rest of the afternoon was spent enjoying our villa and snorkelling at the Blue Hole nearby. Floating in crystalclear waters, we were lucky enough to spot a baby reef shark below (harmless, thankfully).

That evening, we joined other guests at Dune, a chic al fresco beach lounge, for a weekly gathering hosted by the Niyama Management Team. With the sky turning golden, mixed drinks in hand and toes in the sand, it was a lovely chance to meet our neighbours and the staff. The resort holds many special events for guests – everything from braais on the beach and Asian street food evenings to underwater glow parties at Subsix and nightly buffet specials across its restaurants. After drinks, we were excited for dinner – not just any dinner, but one served in a treehouse! At Nest, wooden walkways led us through banyan vines to tables perched among the branches. The menu offered inventive takes on Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian dishes, each presented with flair – the whole setting felt as adventurous and theatrical as the food. It’s no surprise the restaurant has won multiple awards, including the Interior Design Renovation by LIV Hospitality Design Award 2024.

Exploring the Playground

We started the next day with something special: a floating breakfast served in our villa pool. Arranged by Shammu the night before, we tucked into an American set menu of

eggs, pastries, fresh fruit and coffee on a floating wicker tray. There’s nothing quite as serene as eating breakfast in a pool with the waves as your soundtrack – a memory that will certainly stay with me!

Following breakfast, we explored Play and its offerings. The resort runs a busy calendar of daily activities, including yoga, beach football, volleyball, kickboxing, painting and fitness classes. We managed a quick knockabout on the tennis court before checking out the Explorers Kids’ Club nearby, which offers plenty to keep young guests entertained. Cycling on, we passed the coral nursery, where the resort’s marine biologist works with guests to restore reefs. Visitors can even adopt coral fragments to be transplanted back into the lagoon – a thoughtful sustainability initiative.

Further on, a small nook housed Snap Studio, offering professional photo sessions, and Float, the resort’s hub for all things watersports. From jet skiing, diving and kitesurfing to parasailing and glass kayaking, the list seemed endless. Surfing is also big here, with Niyama the only resort in the Maldives with its own private break.

After a busy afternoon exploring the facilities, it was time to relax with Destination Dining – a private romantic dinner on the beach. When we arrived, a beautiful table had already been set up, complete with lanterns and a personal chef. It was the closest thing you can get to dinner on a deserted island, and though a Maldivian downpour added some drama, our waiter appeared instantly with an umbrella to save the evening.

Until Next Time

Our final morning began with breakfast at Epicure, followed by a wander around the island. We mooched around The Lair, a lounge filled with books and DVDs, before heading to the games room for a quick round of table tennis. Nearby shops offered jewellery, clothing and souvenirs – a last chance to take a piece of Niyama home with us. Before packing, we couldn’t resist one last stop at Dune for fresh coconut water, a quick photo op and to reflect on our stay. Niyama Private Islands Maldives invites you to chill and play, and that’s exactly what we did – it’s truly Nature’s Playground, with world-class service in a setting unlike any other.

All too soon, it was time to go. Shammu arranged our seaplane back to Malé, and the staff gathered to see us off. The farewell was as warm as the welcome, leaving us happy, relaxed and already dreaming of our next visit. Thank you, Niyama for making our trip truly unforgettable! ✤

TAKING A BREAK IN DUBAI

Bushra Hakin checked out luxurious spaces, outstanding views and indulgent treats during a weekend at the

Hilton Dubai Creek Hotel & Residences.

It had been several years since I last visited Dubai. I travelled around the world, but not the Middle East, and I missed the incredible transformation Dubai has undergone. The last time I was there, the skyline was impressive, yes, but now? It’s like the city has expanded quickly into endless stretches of luxury. After a quick flight, I was breezing through customs and slipping into a chauffeured car. The drive to my home for the weekend – Hilton Dubai Creek Hotel & Residences –was delightfully short, thanks to its enviable location in the Jewel of the Creek development. This sleek, waterside enclave is home to some of the most luxurious residences in the city, and the Hilton fits in perfectly among them.

The Residence

Walking into the lobby, the first thing that hit me was colour: a bold sweep of pink and rose-gold that runs through the entire property. This isn’t the timid pastel you see in a boutique café; it’s glossy, glamorous and unapologetically chic. A wall of windows frames the marina outside, where the hotel even offers berthing facilities for guests arriving by yacht.

The marble backdrop, yes, pink marble, catches the afternoon light, giving the whole space a soft, golden glow. I was welcomed with the traditional warmth of Arabic coffee and plump dates, before John, at reception, swiftly handled check in, sharing all the need-to-knows from breakfast hours to concierge services and a quick overview of the hotel’s amenities.

My one-bedroom apartment was huge, nearly 100sq/m, airy, modern and bathed in natural light from floor-toceiling windows framing Dubai Creek and, in the distance, the spire of the Burj Khalifa. The pink theme continued in subtle accents, tying the interiors together.

A fully equipped kitchen, complete with a stove, oven and a lifesaving coffee machine, sat ready for longer stays. Even laundry was considered, with a washing machine and detergent pods available on request. The living area held a dining table, TV and a welcome spread from the hotel’s HiBye Café: delicate pastries, glossy bonbons and a tray of exotic fruits that were thoughtful touches setting the tone for my stay. Inside the bedroom, the king-size bed was just the right blend of cloud-soft and supportive, with pillows that hit that elusive perfect fluff level and a TV to watch to extend my bedtime.

My favourite feature, though, was the bathroom. It connected the bedroom and living room with jack-andjill doors, housing a deep soaking tub, a rainforest-style shower with built-in speakers and every amenity I could possibly need. Not once did I have to call for any extras.

All-Day Dining

Hilton spoils you for choice when it comes to culinary adventures. Serein Restaurant, the main all-day dining space, was where I took most of my meals. Breakfasts were a daily highlight as I sacrificed precious sleep for

pancakes one morning, shakshouka the next, then dosa, croissants and pain au chocolat, all perfectly executed and fuelling my day.

Lunch there was a global buffet of options, perfect for the hotel’s international clientele. My highlights included a tangy, spicy arrabbiata pasta that hit all the comfortfood notes and the Hilton Platter: a feast of fries, chicken popcorn, cheese spring rolls and onion rings – moreish and best enjoyed with a cold drink on a hot day.

I struck lucky by being in town for the Saturday Brunch. It was an exciting spread of cheese boards, salads and various appetisers alongside sizzling steaks, crispy dosas and the very umami nasi goreng. The steak and eggs were my personal triumph of medium perfection, with sides of grilled cherry tomatoes and crispy potatoes. I also sampled the pancakes and Red Velvet Oats, which weren’t just a sweet craving but also incredibly light on the tummy. Seafood fans can enjoy dishes like the Salmon Poke Bowl or Shrimp Aglio Olio and dessert lovers (like me) can’t skip the Viennoiserie selection.

For something more relaxed, there’s Serein Pool Lounge, with quick bites and sunbeds, and the Hookah Place, a dark, intimate spot where I had dinner on one of the nights. I skipped the hookah but happily tucked into a crunchy Chicken Caesar Salad and then moved on

to a Marinated Chicken Pita filled with grilled chicken, cucumber and tomatoes, all tied together with a tangy and garlicky sauce. I couldn’t resist ending with a matcha latte, served with a chocolate shaped like a capybara, so adorable I almost felt bad eating it.

Spa And Recreation

The first floor is home to the well-equipped fitness centre, pool and my personal favourite – the Wellbeings Holistic Healing Spa. Even the air felt different, scented faintly to awaken all your senses. I was welcomed with a warm cup of calming herbal tea and invited to complete my consultation form while discussing treatment options with the therapist. The menu was expansive, featuring both familiar and rare therapies. I opted for a Balinese massage with lemon essential oil, which is ideal for relieving muscle tension without being overly intense. My therapist, Daisy, suggested I start with the sauna and steam room to open my pores and relax my muscles. The Jacuzzi, booked in advance for privacy, was a thoughtful touch that made the experience feel truly exclusive. There, I spent about an hour relaxing both my mind and my muscles, after which the experience followed. The massage itself was a masterclass in skill and intuition.

Daisy worked in fluid, unhurried motions, easing knots and lingering where I needed it most, whilst also applying acupressure to troubled areas. The signature Balinese stretches gently coaxed my joints into release, while the citrus-infused oil added an extra touch of relaxation. By the time she finished, I felt taller, lighter and oddly, as if my skin was glowing from the inside out. I was given some time to relax in the dark room before I changed and had my last cup of herbal tea.

Out and About

While the hotel could easily have kept me cocooned all weekend, I ventured out. To reconnect with the city’s traditional side, I visited the Gold Souq, its displays of intricate jewellery glinting under bright lights and its labyrinthine alleyways taking me from one speciality souq to another. Deira City Centre was a hop, skip and a jump away and tested my shopping stamina while Dubai Mall and the glittering Downtown reminded me why this city is such a global draw. The Dubai Frame offered a striking view of old and new, its towering golden structure framing the skyline like a work of art. The only regret? Visiting during summer meant missing out on the city’s lush gardens and open-air attractions, many of which were closed due to the heat. All too soon, it was time to leave. The warmth of the staff, the comfort of the apartment, and the ease of being so close to everything made the weekend feel both restful and full. I left with the quiet certainty that I’d be back, next time with family and hopefully in the cooler months, to enjoy everything the Hilton Dubai Creek Hotel & Residences and its neighbourhood have to offer. ✤

THE QUIET EYE

From Milan’s frantic runways to the monumental stillness of Doha, Italian photographer Mirco Panaccio found not just a new city, but a new way of seeing. We caught up with him to learn more.

When Mirco Panaccio left Milan five years ago, he wasn’t simply trading one city for another. He was leaving behind a system.

“Milan is fast-paced, rooted in tradition, defined by constant competition,” he recalls. For years, that tempo had shaped his career.

But when the pandemic hit, everything fractured. Italy’s photography industry, once buzzing, slowed to a crawl. “It felt like the right moment to embrace change,” he recalls. Following his partner to Qatar, he landed in Doha with little more than his cameras and the determination to rebuild from zero.

What he discovered wasn’t just new geography but a radically different rhythm. “Doha taught me to breathe differently, to listen more to spaces and to people.” The phrase is almost whispered, but it carries the weight of a revelation. In the city’s slower, more expansive air, he began to see that photography could be more than an endless chase for aesthetics. The desert light, the hush of dawn and the vastness of the city’s architecture all conspired to slow his gaze, transforming it into an act of presence, patience and attention to the pauses between gestures.

The Geometry of Silence

Doha quickly became his studio. Its contradictions, from mirrored glass towers to sharp-edged geometry melting into infinite desert, reshaped his way of seeing. “The city is a constant play of contrasts,” he says. “It taught me to work with emptiness and with lines, to let the frame breathe.” His compositions followed that lesson: models began to inhabit

the environment rather than stand against it, and architecture shifted from backdrop to partner. He explains: “When I shoot, I try to translate that essential monumentality into images that are both intimate and powerful, where the subject engages in a dialogue with the space instead of being overwhelmed by it.”

That stillness soon became a signature. Yet Mirco insists his approach is not about rigid control, saying: “I prepare every detail with care, but I always leave room for the unexpected.” A gust of wind that disturbs fabric, a spontaneous gesture that fractures symmetry… These intrusions are where life enters the frame. That principle has carried him through projects of every scale. The most striking example came when he was asked to work as Dan Bilzerian’s personal photographer – for the uninitiated, he’s an American ‘influencer’ with 30 million Instagram followers. “It was a unique challenge: to portray such an exuberant personality without falling into stereotypes,” Mirco says. His solution was restraint. “I looked for balance between intensity and authenticity, highlighting the man behind the icon.” The assignment provided creative freedom, but above all, it confirmed that his philosophy works anywhere: in the silence of the desert as much as under the spotlight of celebrity.

When Images Speak

These experiences reinforced his conviction that photography is not about excess but about essence. For Mirco, every assignment, whether extravagant or understated, begins with

a story. “Everything else – a fabric, a gesture, an atmosphere –becomes part of that larger narrative,” he says. He approaches shoots as if they were screenplays, each frame a sentence, each sequence a chapter.

His devotion to storytelling sustains him in an age where photographs flood every screen. “I firmly believe a single image can still cut through the noise,” he insists. Yet the reason, he argues, isn’t technical perfection. “An unforgettable photograph is the one that speaks, that goes beyond technique and reaches the soul.”

That conviction has become his quiet rebellion. “Today we see millions of technically flawless photographs, but often without a voice.” For him, what counts is sincerity: a picture that touches, surprises or makes someone feel recognised. That, he believes, is where photography proves its power and becomes unforgettable. Looking back, Mirco doesn’t see Doha as an escape but as an alignment. He carried Milan’s discipline across borders, but his new surroundings allowed him to soften it. He discovered spectacle not in extravagance but in subtler forms: the curve of a line, the hush of ritual, the geometry of shadows at dusk.

His photographs now carry both worlds inside them: the rigor of European fashion and the contemplation of the Gulf. They don’t scream for attention. They command it. They ask the viewer to stop, if only for an instant, and breathe differently. Just as Doha asked of him.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Hat Trick Gone Wrong

A positive moment of sportsmanship turned awkward when Polish CEO Piotr Szczerek was filmed snatching a cap that Kamil Majchrzak had tossed to a young fan at the US Open. The clip went viral almost instantly, drawing harsh remarks online. Things got worse when Piotr, instead of apologising straight away, suggested that it was “first come, first served” and even hinted that the little boy should have been quicker, which

only riled people up. Critics accused him of doubling down instead of showing remorse. The CEO later issued a fuller apology, saying he’d made a ‘huge mistake’, returned the hat to the boy and disabled comments on his post. Turned out the youngster got the last laugh. Kamil reunited with the fan and handed over fresh merch, smoothing things over. But, it’s a reminder: public moments will stick forever and nicking a child’s souvenir is never a good look.

Meet George Jetson

It’s official! Flying cars are no longer mere sci-fi. Alef Aeronautics has unveiled its Model A: the world’s first road-legal flying car approved for testing in the US. By all appearances, it looks like a sleek electric vehicle, but when traffic builds up, it simply lifts off vertically like a drone. On the ground it can travel around 322km, while in the air it manages about 177km. At USD300,000 a pop, it’s

hardly replacing your Toyota anytime soon, but it does feel like The Jetsons ’ future is coming to life. Alef says deliveries could begin later this year, though with pre-orders stacking up, you may have to wait a little longer than expected. Still, the prospect is thrilling: no more gridlock, just the push of a button and you’re gliding over traffic. Maybe one day rush hour might feel less like torture and more like a video game.

In-Flight Emergency

Most of us have forgotten our passport or charger before a flight. Mr Wang, a passenger travelling from Shanghai to Singapore, went one step further – he left his gas stove on, with eggs still boiling. Three hours into the journey, it finally dawned on him. He alerted the cabin crew, who immediately passed his home address and smart lock code to airline staff on the ground. At first, property managers were sceptical. A

mid-flight stove emergency? Surely not. But once the details matched, staff rushed to turn off the gas and open windows for ventilation. The stove was still on, the eggs burnt to a crisp, but thankfully, the house was safe. Mr Wang reportedly thanked everyone profusely, likely vowing never to multitask breakfast and international travel again. Forgetting a toothbrush is one thing but almost flambéing your house? That’s a whole new level!
