Embracing The Outdoors
“
“Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Step outside and breathe it in – autumn has arrived, bringing with it that longawaited change in the air. This is one of my favourite months, as the heavy summer heat begins to ease, the evenings grow cooler and suddenly the outdoors feels like the best seat in the house. Our cover story celebrates just that – Outdoor Escapes. Whether it’s al fresco dining with friends, desert camping under the stars or catching a live concert, we’ve rounded up some of the best ways to enjoy Bahrain’s open-air offerings.
For those whose outdoor adventures start at home, our gardening feature shows how to get yours winter ready. With the soil getting a well-earned break from the scorching sun, it’s the perfect time to get your hands dirty, with expert advice on giving your outdoor spaces some love.
October is also shaping up to be packed with events. Car enthusiasts can look forward to the much-anticipated debut of the Royal Bahrain Concours, while Porsche Centre Bahrain and UFC Gym Bahrain join forces for breast cancer awareness. Music takes centre stage with the announcement of John Mayer making his Bahrain debut in January 2026, the return of the Bahrain International Music Festival and the fusion sounds of Glass Beams live at Al Dana Amphitheatre. And sports fans are in for a treat as Bahrain hosts the 3rd Asian Youth Games for the first time. Of course, October wouldn’t be complete without Halloween – from the island’s first Horror Fest to a kids' themed party at Vida Bahrain, thrills await around every corner.
In the arts, the 52nd Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition continues to showcase homegrown talent, and we catch up with intuitive artist Mariam Dashti about her creative journey.
Dining this month is just as enticing, from Lebanese breakfast at naya and Mediterranean creations at Palma, to meaty indulgence at Tenderloin & Co., Instagram-worthy plates at EL&N and comforting Iranian flavours at Homa. In motoring, we put the Audi Q8 S-line to the test and explore the latest new car launches making a splash.
Talking of outdoor escapes, read all about my own blissful getaway at the stunning Niyama Private Islands Maldives (bucket list – check!). Fashion embraces the autumnal tones this season, and, as always, we keep you on trend with the latest from the worlds of beauty, tech and entertainment.
The outdoors is calling, don’t keep it waiting!
Bye for now...

Visitors can also look forward to an impressive display of more than 250 cars presented by prestigious car clubs from Bahrain and the GCC.
The programme begins on November 7 (Friday) – Royal & VIP Day – with the Grand Arrival, a procession of all 60 Concours cars spanning more than 100 years of motoring history. Seeing these vehicles driven into position by their owners offers a unique
chance to appreciate them in motion before they take their places on the show field. November 8 (Saturday) - Specialist Concours & Club Trophy Awards Day – will feature various select categories, which will be announced at the event. There will also be a presentation of class awards and the coveted Best of Show. Both days feature car club gatherings and the Grand Depart on Saturday afternoon, when the Concours cars leave the grounds of the Royal Golf Club in style.
The event will create a retail and entertainment experience like no other. Alongside the cars, visitors can expect curated displays marking milestones in motorsport, pop-up boutiques from luxury brands and a wide choice of exquisite dining options celebrating both local and international cuisines.

SPORTING SPECTACLE IN BAHRAIN
Bahrain is set to host the Asian Youth Games for the first time, bringing together some of the best young athletes, new sports and a week of intense competition.
Final preparations are underway to introduce the 3rd Asian Youth Games (AYG) from October 22 to 31, to be held under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, President of the General Sports Authority and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee. This marks the first time the Kingdom welcomes the event, with over 6,000 athletes from 45 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competing.
The AYG will showcase a wide range of sports, including swimming, athletics (track and field and cross-country), badminton, 3x3 basketball, boxing, camel racing, cycling, equestrian (endurance and show jumping), esports, futsal, golf, handball, jiu-jitsu, judo, kabaddi, Muay Thai, table tennis, taekwondo, teqball, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, beach volleyball and beach weightlifting. The organising committee, in collaboration with the Olympic Council of Asia, has also officially added Pencak Silat (a form of traditional martial arts) and Kurash (folk wrestling), bringing the total number of sports to 26. Pencak Silat, widely popular across Asia, is seen as a valuable addition.
Competitions will take place across 23 venues, supported by more than 30 training fields and three main areas. The games are designed for athletes aged 14 to 18 and will serve as qualifying events for the Youth Olympic Games to be held in Dakar in summer 2026. While the official opening
is on October 22, seven events will start earlier: men’s futsal, handball and volleyball on October 19, followed by women’s futsal, kabaddi, teqball and beach volleyball on October 21. The final day, October 31, will feature the men's and women's swimming events and award presentations, alongside the closing ceremony.
Central to the Games is the official mascot, Shahab, an Arabian Oryx symbolising vitality, strength, resilience and ambition. Two additional mascots, Najm and Dana, will welcome delegations, serving as ambassadors of Bahraini hospitality. The event’s gold, silver and bronze medals have already been unveiled and feature the official emblem of the Games, surrounded by stylised elements representing the word ‘Bahrain’.
The inaugural Asian Youth Games took place in Singapore in 2009, followed by the second edition in China in 2013. Held under the Olympic Council of Asia, the Games are a significant event for youth sports across the continent. With Asia’s brightest young athletes competing for glory, the 3rd AYG promises exciting, high-level action and a platform to inspire the next generation of talent, while reinforcing Bahrain’s growing reputation as a host of international sporting events. ✤

Hanan presents Capturing Humanity: The Rich Tapestry of Daily Life, turning her lens to fleeting moments that make up the everyday. With an eye for gestures, rituals and encounters, her photographs elevate the ordinary into something quietly profound.
Italian photographer Loredana shifts perspective in Celestial Vaults, directing the viewer’s gaze upwards. Her images of sacred domes and ceilings explore devotion, beauty and the universal human search for transcendence.
Completing the quartet is Valentina’s Venice & the East, A Timeless Dialogue. COLLAB FOR A CAUSE
Two giants in their own fields, Porsche Centre Bahrain and UFC Gym Bahrain, come together this month to raise awareness for breast cancer in the Kingdom.
Porsche Centre Bahrain, Behbehani Brothers W.L.L, is partnering with UFC Gym Bahrain this October to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The initiative reinforces both organisations’ shared commitment to supporting community health and well-being while raising awareness for a cause of global significance.
Throughout October, a series of specially curated fitness and boxing sessions will be conducted at UFC Gym Bahrain. These sessions will be available for public booking with all proceeds dedicated to supporting breast cancer awareness efforts in the Kingdom.
A main event will be held by Porsche and UFC Gym on October 15, where participants will be able to book a fitness session, with all proceeds going to the Bahrain Cancer Society. They will receive a BD5 voucher that can be used at any time during October or they can just train with everyone else at the event.
As a visual statement of solidarity, Porsche Centre Bahrain has unveiled a fully wrapped, all-pink Porsche Macan BEV. The vehicle will be displayed prominently outside UFC Gym throughout the month,
serving both as a symbol of awareness and a call to action for early detection and preventative care. In addition to fitness activities, the campaign will include a programme of community events and drive experiences, designed to engage participants while emphasising the importance of health, resilience and collective responsibility.
“At Porsche Centre Bahrain, we believe in driving change both on and off the road,” said Semreen Ahmed, Marketing & PR Manager, Porsche Centre Bahrain. “This collaboration with UFC Gym gives us the opportunity to merge performance, fitness and community to shine a light on breast cancer awareness.”

FIVE-STAR HOTEL WINS BIG!
Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain earned another feather in its cap with a new accolade, adding to its growing list of achievements in luxury and service excellence.
Recognised for the second consecutive year, Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain has been honoured by the Haute Grandeur Global Hotel Awards, receiving top distinctions that highlight its ongoing leadership in hospitality across the Kingdom.
This year, the hotel was recognised in three categories: Best Business Hotel in Bahrain, Best Airport Hotel in Bahrain and Best Bed and Breakfast Hotel in Bahrain.
The Haute Grandeur Global Hotel Awards celebrate excellence in the hotel industry worldwide. Being recognised once again through a process that values genuine guest feedback and performance is a meaningful achievement for the entire Mövenpick Bahrain team.
Nestled just across from Bahrain International Airport, Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain has quietly built a reputation for delivering more than just five-star comfort. Guests return not only for the convenience but for the warmth, care and consistency of a team that takes pride in every detail.
“We are humbled and proud to receive this recognition for the second year in a row,” said Benoit-Joseph Metanomski, General Manager of Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain. “These awards are a testament to the commitment of our heartists, our team, who approach hospitality with both
professionalism and heart. Their passion is what makes these moments possible.”
While awards come and go, the mindset behind them does not. At Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, excellence is not a goal; it is a culture. From tailored business stays to warm earlymorning breakfasts, every guest experience is carefully crafted to exceed expectations.
Haute Grandeur Global Excellence Awards honour establishments that continuously excel through remarkable hospitality experiences, recognising excellence through guest feedback rather than votes from the general public or a panel of judges. This fair and transparent process guarantees unbiased results, a concept exclusive to the brand.
With this latest recognition, Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain’s journey continues. And so does the promise to keep delivering hospitality that is heartfelt, consistent and worthy of being remembered. ✤
OUTDOOR ESCAPES
With the summer heat easing, Bahrain comes alive with outdoor activities. From music concerts, beach parties and al fresco dining to fitness classes, racket sports and desert camping, the island offers countless ways to spend time outside.
We’ve rounded up some of the best open-air experiences worth trying over the coming months, perfect for families, friends or solo outings.
Al Fresco Dining
Autumn evenings are made for eating outdoors, and Bahrain has plenty of options. Rooftop spots like Alto Lounge, Roka and SUSHISAMBA are all about city views, DJs and cocktails, while Trader Vic’s takes a more laid-back approach in its famous tropical atmosphere. Al Massarah at Royal Saray Resort is a refined choice, with a terrace that pairs elegant dishes with a stunning pool view, while Palma at Raffles Al Areen Palace feels like a retreat, with a calm, elegant ambience. Oliveto in Adliya continues to be popular with its intimate poolside seating and The Garden at Address Beach Resort Bahrain brings a stylish seaside option to the scene. If you’re after something unique, La Fontaine offers fine dining in a romantic historic setting, with its striking central fountain. And don’t miss the Flavors Around the World Food Festival at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa on October 30 for a global culinary journey hosted poolside. Whether you’re planning a casual catch-up or a big night out, dining al fresco is one of the best ways to make the most of Bahrain’s milder months.
Concerts
Beyon Al Dana Amphitheatre has quickly become Bahrain’s go-to spot for outdoor concerts, and if you’ve been to a show there, you’ll know why. Set in Sakhir, the impressive venue makes the most of its desert location with plenty of seating, good views and a lively atmosphere. And whether it’s a global superstar, a regional favourite or a homegrown act, the ambience always feels special under the open sky. The milder months are packed with events and this season we’re especially excited to see The Smashing Pumpkins on October 7, Metallica on December 3 and Linkin Park on January 18 – a rare chance to catch these iconic rock bands live in Bahrain for the first time. Tickets for the big shows can go fast, so plan ahead, grab your friends and make a night of it – Al Dana is one of the best outdoor experiences Bahrain has to offer.
Beach Parties
Once the temperatures drop, Bahrain’s coastline comes alive with parties that stretch from sunset to late night. Amwaj Islands set the tone for beachside fun, with Solymar hosting DJ-fuelled parties and The Art Hotel & Resort staging its own lively events. For a calmer vibe, Azul Beach pairs daytime chillouts with late night parties and live performances by the water. October is already stacked with big events – kicking off with October Beach Fest at Azul Beach on October 3 with live sets, dancers and all-day energy. Of course, Halloween lands with style at Solymar’s SpookFest ’25 – Día de los Muertos on October 31, where Aaron Sevilla will be behind the decks. And next month, global sensation Hugel, will take over Solymar Beach on November 13, promising a night of heavy bass and nonstop beats. Whether you’re after big-name DJs or a laid-back evening with friends, the season is short, so it’s worth catching a few of these parties while the weather is perfect.

Cycling
Cycling in Bahrain has never been more accessible, with plenty of tracks to explore. Opened this year, the Nasser bin Hamad Loop in Zallaq is a mustride for anyone on two wheels. Whether you're aiming for the full 50km loop or just a mini ride, it's a safe, dedicated path to pedal your heart out. Bahrain Bay is popular for casual riders, with smooth paths and waterfront views, while Dilmunia and Diyar Al Muharraq both offer traffic-free lanes. There are clubs you can join if you’re keen to cycle regularly, such as the all-women Cycling Bees, but plenty of people just head out on their own or with friends for an easy ride. If you want something more relaxed, Kashta Tours runs regular cycling tours, making it a fun way to see the island. With Bahrain being fairly flat, outdoor cycling offers an active and social way to make the most of milder days.
Cooler weather means the start of camping season (usually between November and March) is just around the corner. Head out to Sakhir and you’ll see groups setting up tents, barbecues and firepits, turning the desert into a second home for the cooler months. Some families and friends go all out with traditional-style camps complete with seating areas and kitchens, while others keep it simple with a tent and a grill. If you don’t have the gear or time to set up your own, there are companies that arrange Bedouin-style camps, giving you the same experience with a bit less effort. Nights are all about sitting around the fire, cooking, chatting and watching the stars. It’s social, relaxed and one of those traditions that makes winter feel different in Bahrain.
Farmer’s Market
Every winter, the annual Bahraini Farmers’ Market returns, and it’s always a favourite. Taking place at the Budaiya Botanical Gardens, it has become something of a weekend ritual for many since it first launched in 2012. Usually held from December to March/April, the gardens fill with stalls where local farmers set out their freshest fruit, vegetables, herbs and dates. It’s not just about shopping, though – the market has a relaxed, social atmosphere and you’ll end up spending a couple of hours just browsing, chatting and enjoying being outdoors. There are often extra touches too, from handmade crafts to food vendors and children’s activities and workshops. Open from 8am to 2pm, it’s a laid-back way to stock up on seasonal produce, while supporting the island’s farming community.

Fitness Training
If the gym feels a bit stuffy, autumn is the time to take your workouts outdoors. The Art Hotel & Resort’s beach gym, in partnership with Spartan Fitness, offers functional workouts with innovative wood-inspired equipment. For something different, try JFC Bahrain in Dilmunia, where personal trainer Ehsan Al Saati has created a new workout style that mixes indoor and outdoor sessions, blending bodyweight exercises with gym equipment. For endurance activities, The Factory runs regular outdoor events like The Factory Run and The Triathlete Factory (TTF) races for kids. Runners can also check out Not A Cult, a group that’s become popular for its community vibe and regular outdoor runs around the island. Whether you’re into strength training, cardio or just want a fun workout outside the usual routine, there’s something happening most weeks. Grab some water, bring your energy and enjoy the difference of training in the open air.
Historic Sightseeing
Golfing
Golf in Bahrain is more than just a sport, it’s a way to enjoy cooler mornings and afternoons outdoors with a good mix of fun, focus and relaxation. The Royal Golf Club (RGC) in Riffa is the most established, with an 18-hole championship course, a par-three academy course and practice facilities. It regularly hosts local and international tournaments and is well set up for both experienced players and beginners. That said, there are other options – Awali Golf Club, with its sand course and long history, continues to be popular, while Bahrain Golf Club in Riffa offers a nine-hole option at a more affordable rate. The season also brings a string of events, and this year the calendar is looking especially full. The 7th Bahrain Amateur Open returns from October 9 to 11, with the winner earning a special spot at the 17th King Hamad Trophy, taking place from November 27 to 29 at the RGC. Golf will also feature in the 3rd Asian Youth Games, to be hosted in Bahrain from October 22 to 31, bringing international attention to the island’s courses. Whether you’re there for serious play or just to try something new, there’s no better time to tee off.
Bahrain’s cooler months are ideal for exploring the island’s historic spots. The Bahrain Fort (Qal’at al-Bahrain), the Kingdom's oldest and a UNESCO World Heritage site overlooking the Karbabad coast, is worth a visit, especially with the on-site museum giving context to the ruins. Arad Fort is popular in the evenings, when the floodlights give it a magical feel and it’s perfect for a short stroll, while the 19th-century Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Fort in Riffa, once a royal residence, offers wide views over the Al-Haniniya Valley. And Qal’at Bu Mahir in Muharraq, situated at the start of the ancient pearling path, is a coastal gem, offering a glimpse into Bahrain’s maritime history through its ruins. If you’re out towards the desert, the iconic Tree of Life is another must – standing alone in the sand for over 400 years, it’s simple but striking and worth the drive. Pairing it with a fort visit makes for a nice, relaxed day that mixes culture, nature and a bit of fresh air.

Horse Riding
Horse riding is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and connect with the Bahrain’s long equestrian tradition. And whether you’re a beginner or more experienced, there are plenty of options. Twin Palms Riding Centre is the largest on the island, offering lessons by qualified European instructors for all levels and ages. Its BHS (British Horse Society) Challenge Awards training, focussing on horse care and handling, starts this October and runs over 10 weeks. AlJawhara Equestrian Centre in Saar also offers lessons and riding packages for women and children only, while Ghazwan Equestrian Centre provides training and trail rides for all ages above five years. Muharraq Equestrian Academy is another option, providing international standard training and skill development. Dilmun Club Stables also offers private lessons by experienced instructors and organises fun camps for children. For those who prefer something a bit more laid back, operators like Kashta Tours and Island Tours and Activities arrange scenic horseback trips. From casual rides to structured lessons, Bahrain has something for every equine enthusiast.
If you’re after something more fast-paced, Bahrain International Karting Circuit (BIKC) is hard to beat. The professional grade track meets international standards, but you don’t need experience –anyone can suit up, put on a helmet and race. It’s floodlit, so races run day and night, and both adult and junior karts are available. Sessions can be booked for individuals or groups, making it a popular choice for friends looking for a competitive outing. It’s well organised, safe and genuinely good fun. And for younger kids or a more low-key experience, there are also smaller karting tracks around the island, such as Gulf Speed One at Al Najma Club in Juffair. Even if you’re not usually into motorsport, the adrenaline kicks in as soon as you’re out on the track. Go-Karting is a great way to spend an afternoon or evening outdoors, and you’ll probably end up wanting another round.
Open-Air Cinema
Watching a film outside always feels a bit different, and Autumn is the perfect time for it. La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art hosts regular outdoor movie nights in its courtyard, which makes for a great setting paired with a set dinner. For a more private option with friends or family, Home Cinema Bahrain offers portable setups that bring a full outdoor experience to your garden, complete with screens, sound systems and tailored film choices. It’s casual, fun and a change from the usual cinema experience. Keep an eye on social media for updates as hotels and resorts sometimes host pop-up cinema nights too, usually by the pool or beach with beanbags, popcorn and blankets. If you’re looking for an easy evening out that still feels a little special, outdoor cinema is always a good pick.
Outdoor Art
If you’re looking for something creative to do outdoors when the weather cools down, Bahrain has a few great options that bring art into the open air. Mosaic House in Budaiya is a charming spot, where you can piece together colourful tile mosaics in its beautiful garden. You can choose from small designs like butterflies and letters to larger projects like tabletops, with plenty of guidance along the way. If sketching appeals more, check out Sketch Walks, run by two architects who take groups around the island to sketch landmarks and city corners. Or head to Artology in Saar, where you’ll find everything from art nights under the stars (private bookings) to music and make your own pizza evenings, all designed to bring people together around creativity. Outdoor art makes for a refreshing change from the usual weekend plans.
Picnicking
Sometimes the best outdoor activity is the simplest one – packing a basket and heading to the park. Popular choices include Prince Khalifa bin Salman Park in Hidd, where open lawns meet the water, or Budaiya Beach Park, where paved seaside walkways, lawns and the beach add to the setting. Water Garden Park in Salmaniya is another option, especially for families thanks to its lakes and wide spaces. For a coastal feel, Arad Bay combines grassy areas with walking paths that are ideal for both exercise and relaxation. Many parks now include facilities such as playgrounds, fountains and food stalls, making it easy to spend several hours without needing to leave. Picnicking never goes out of style, and the milder weather is the best excuse to do it more often.
Paintball
For a dose of adrenaline, paintball is hard to beat. Paintball Bahrain at Prince Khalifah bin Salman Park in Hidd is the go-to spot, with outdoor fields that make games feel fast, messy and fun. It’s great for groups of friends or work teams, and once you’re suited up and holding a marker, it doesn’t take long before everyone gets competitive. All equipment is provided on site according to your skill level and the field is set up with obstacles and cover, so there’s plenty of running, hiding and plotting with teammates. Sessions usually last 15 or 20 minutes, but you’ll come away feeling like you’ve had a proper workout, as well as a good laugh. The open-air setting adds to the experience, giving more space than indoor venues and keeping the action unpredictable.

Rock Climbing
If you’re looking for something active, challenging and a little different, The Crag at Gravity Village in Zallaq is worth a try. Bahrain’s first dedicated outdoor climbing facility, it’s run by passionate local climbers who’ve created a space for both beginners and pros. The 15-metre walls come with different tracks and disciplines – from top rope and auto belay to bouldering and lead climbs – so you can test yourself at your own pace. Don’t worry about gear; everything from shoes to helmets is provided, and the friendly instructors are always ready to guide you. There are even leaderboards if you like a bit of competition. For newcomers, there are special programmes to build confidence and learn the basics, while seasoned climbers can push their limits on more technical routes. It’s a great way to shake off stress, focus your mind and experience the satisfaction of conquering every climb.
Racket Sports
Cooler months are the best time to get outside with a racquet in hand. Tennis has long been a favourite in Bahrain, with courts found across the island at venues like Dilmun Club and The British Club. For something more structured, Bahrain Tennis Club in Juffair runs regular friendly tournaments, while the Bahrain Tennis Federation in Isa Town holds competitions and lessons for all ages. Bahrain Tennis Academy (the Kingdom’s oldest and largest academy) in Saar is popular with families, offering a full programme for children learning the game. Padel has seen a huge rise in popularity too. You’ll find courts at Sama Bay next to Amwaj Islands, Padel Park at Gravity Village in Zallaq and Sky Padel’s rooftop courts in Adliya. Several five-star hotels, including Sheraton Bahrain and The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa, now offer premium courts too. So, book a session with friends and enjoy an active evening outdoors.
Winter Markets
The cooler months bring a wave of outdoor winter markets across Bahrain, perfect for wandering between stalls, picking up unique finds and festive presents, while enjoying the weather. From handmade jewellery and artisan crafts to local food and kids’ activities, these markets are as much about the atmosphere as the shopping. One of the newer additions is Market Street in Um Al Hassam, a permanent venue for vendors to showcase their products, supporting over 100 local artists, crafters, designers and small businesses. Each vendor has their own story, and every purchase goes back into supporting the local community. Market Street has a number of outdoor events planned for the coming months, including Diwali Shopping Day on October 4, Autumn Shopping on October 25, Festive Night Market on November 22 and National Day Pop-Up on December 17. Across the island, the winter season also sees various international schools and expat clubs hosting outdoor festive markets, selling everything from art and clothes to food and trinkets. Whether you’re browsing, people-watching or just enjoying the vibe, these markets are worth keeping an eye out for.

GETTING YOUR GARDEN WINTER READY!
With the weather cooling down and our gardens getting a much-needed respite from the heat, it’s the perfect time to pamper the earth, flower beds and veggie patches to get your outdoor spaces flourishing for the winter months. We bring you expert advice on how to prep your garden for the coming months, tips on sustainable gardening and how to create a blossoming balcony garden. •
WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY
The first and only one of its kind on the island, The Bahrain Garden Club (BGC) has been guiding and inspiring people to become passionate gardeners since 1965. Apple Sharma chatted with Chairwoman and Horticulturist, Zahra Abdul Malik, and Executive Board Member and Gardening Expert, Irina Averinos, to get their expert advice on winter-proofing your garden and sustainable gardening practices.
With Bahrain’s weather starting to cool, how can we get our gardens winter ready?
October is the perfect time for getting the garden ready for the winter season – plough the soil, add organic manure, prune the hedges and the climbers. Secondly, clear out all leaves and debris and sow the seeds of winter annual flowers and veggies.
Which plants and shrubs grow best in Bahrain during the next few months?
All tropical and desert zone plants are easy to grow successfully in Bahrain during the winter season. These include both bushes (ixora, hibiscus, bird of paradise, bleeding heart, clitoria, cycas, henna, desert rose, dodonaea and lemongrass, to name a few) and trees (eucalyptus, Indian almond, neem, Persian lilac, vitex, ugli fruit, mango and wax apple, among others).
What vegetable seeds or bulbs should gardeners sow in October for a winter harvest?
In mid-October, vegetable seedlings should be planted in the garden, such as tomato, cucumber, capsicum, chilli, aubergine, marrow, squash and corn. Kitchen herbs and some vegetables can be sown (as seeds) direct into the soil, including radish, carrots, parsley, coriander, dill, onion, garlic, potato and beans.
What are the best flowering plants to grow during the cooler months, indoors and outdoors?
Many different flowers can grow outdoors in Bahrain in the winter season, such as zinnia, alyssum, nasturtium, calendula, crown daisy, petunias, sunflowers, cornflower, delphinium, marigold, butterfly pea, borage, lavender, nicotine, dianthus, cosmos, verbena, roses and statice.
Most indoor plants have decorative leaves, without flowers and are actually outdoor plants in other countries. If you would like to add colour to your room, bring home blooming plants –which have their own cycle – with periods of active growth and dormancy varying for different plants. For year-round vibrant colours, choose Anthurium with its heart-shaped blooms. For low-light room conditions and low maintenance, a Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) will be perfect. For small spaces, choose an African Violet or a low-maintenance option – blooming Kalanchoe. For unique flowers and festive displays in early winter, consider the Zygocactus (Christmas Cactus) and Poinsettia. For more advanced plant lovers, Orchids with their eye-catching long-lasting flowers in a wide range of bright colours are recommended.

What are your top three tips for keeping a garden healthy through the winter?
Gardens require a lot of attention and care to remain healthy and vibrant.
Keep soil healthy: Improve quality by adding compost and mulch. Compost provides nutrients, improves soil structure and reduces the need for pesticides and fertilisers. It is easy and environmentally friendly to make your own compost. Just try. Mulch helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and suppress weeds.
Choose healthy plants suited to the local conditions: Select disease-resistant varieties, match them with the light conditions of your garden and plant them where they can thrive. Regularly monitor your garden for pests and diseases.
Watering plants correctly: In the early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation and encourage deep watering [an efficient method that soaks the soil several inches], which leads to strong roots.
Sustainable gardening is great for our gardens and our environment. Are there plants that naturally repel insects and could help our gardens thrive this autumn?
Growing the right plants can protect your garden, repel insects and make it healthier without harmful chemicals. Plants such as Marigold, Petunias, Nasturtium, Calendula, Lavender, Chrysanthemum, Geranium, Borage, lemon grass, lemon balm, parsley, coriander, onion, garlic, basil and rosemary are excellent choices for a healthier garden. These plants offer eco-friendly pest control – by adding them to your garden, you are supporting a sustainable way to grow your vegetables, fruit and flowers. They also have other benefits: attracting pollinators, adding fresh herbs to your dishes and beautiful flowers to your home.
Companion planting is also recommended as one of the best forms of organic pest control for a healthy garden. It’s a way where
different plants are grown near each other to provide benefits to their neighbours. Example pairings include tomato-basil, garliccarrot, cucumber-dill and many others.
Crop rotation is very important for a healthy garden environment, too, as it improves soil health, reduces pests and diseases, minimises soil degradation and fosters biodiversity.
Zahra Abdul Malik’s Expert Tips For a Sustainable Garden
1. Plant local drought resistant trees and shrubs, such as date palm, jujube, oleander, tamarix, bougainvillea, henna.
2. Plant fruit tree varieties resistant to disease pests.
3. Plant medicinal and insect repellent trees, such as neem.
4. Allocate a partial area for grass to help earth worms work their cycle, but also cut down on water consumption.
5. Allocate an area for vegetables of your need.
6. Use locally sourced organic manure.
7. Use palm fronds for mulching.
8. Rooftops and high walls could be beautified by applying vertical technology in planting herbs, climbing vegetables and perennial climbers that can attract butterflies.
9. Collect, save and share your seeds with your neighbours and friends.
10. Recycle your garden and kitchen waste into compost.
11. Plant your local fruit trees for food security.
12. Process the produce from your garden in various ways (freezing, drying, pickling).

WINTER BALCONY GARDENS
Apartment living may make gardening tricky, but that doesn’t mean you can’t flex your green fingers! With a few pots, some creativity and Bahrain’s cooler winter weather, even the smallest balcony can be transformed into a charming mini garden.
Balcony gardening is about making the most of what you’ve got, whether that’s a small ledge with a few pots or a larger terrace with space for planters and wall trellises. Cooler months in Bahrain are the perfect time for experimenting, with gentler sunshine and milder temperatures making it easier to try your hand at growing a variety of plants. Start by choosing containers that suit your space. Terracotta pots give that classic garden look, while plastic or ceramic are lighter and help keep moisture in. Soil and drainage are important details to get right, so check that each pot has a hole at the base and use a light potting mix rather than heavy garden soil to help roots breathe and keep pots from becoming waterlogged. For a pop of colour, go with easy-to-grow petunias, marigolds, nasturtiums, pansies or calendula. Most herbs like parsley, coriander, basil and mint do well in pots and make ideal kitchen gardens with fresh leaves at hand. If you want to try some veggies, go for compact varieties like radishes, chilli peppers or spinach that won’t take up too much space. Tomatoes also fare well during Bahrain’s cooler weather and can be planted in large pots or fabric grow bags.
If you’d like more greenery, vertical gardening is your friend. Hanging baskets, stackable pots and wall-mounted trellises can help you make the most of every corner and allow you to grow climbers like ornamental ivy, honeysuckle and jasmine. Arranging pots at different heights will also make your balcony feel fuller without looking cluttered.
In winter, plants require less watering, but containers can dry out fast, especially with strong breezes on the balconies. It’s best to water plants in the early morning or late evening and keep an eye out for signs of overwatering. And don’t forget to give pots a little spin every few days so all sides get equal sunlight, particularly on partially shaded balconies.
The right décor can also help turn a simple planting project into a cosy garden corner. Furniture and accessories, including a patio table and chairs, a string of fairy lights or even a colourful cushion can make your balcony an inviting space to relax and unwind with a cuppa on a cool evening.
Quick Care Tips
● Use lightweight pots if your balcony has weight restrictions
● Place saucers under pots to catch excess water and protect balcony floors
● Group plants with similar watering and light needs together
● Keep a small watering can or spray bottle handy for daily checks
● Avoid overcrowding – plants need room to grow strong roots

STYLE WITH SUBSTANCE
Presence met precision when fact took the new Audi Q8 55 TFSI S-line for a spin – a drive that delivered pure grace on the go.
It’s not every day that you get to spend time in a vehicle that oozes sophistication, power and poise, like it’s walking the red carpet. But this month, fact got to do exactly that.
From the moment we engaged with Audi’s new flagship SUV – the new Q8 55 TFSI, we were impressed by every aspect of this suave and spirited S line stunner, enriched by a tasteful selection of optional enhancements.
Bold By Design
Sculpted to belong on a runway, our test drive model was painted in Sakhir Gold Metallic – a shade that’s subtle at dusk and striking under the Arabian sun.
One of the first things we noticed about the Q8 was its presence. This SUV doesn’t whisper premium – it announces it. Boldly. With grace. It’s the automotive equivalent of a designer kaftan: luxe, flowy and unapologetically chic.
The Singleframe grille takes centre stage, decked out in highgloss black as part of the Black Styling Package. Add the S line’s aggressive bumpers, sleek roof spoiler and those imposing 22inch Audi Sport 5-V-spoke wheels and you’ve got an SUV that knows how to command attention. Whether it’s cruising down the corniche or valet-posing outside your favourite brunch spot, it’s sure to turn heads.
Lighting is another theatrical flourish. The HD Matrix LED headlights with Audi laser light are functional and fabulous. Paired with digital OLED rear lights that adapt and even respond to nearby vehicles, the Q8 isn’t just aware of its surroundings; it interacts with them.
Cabin Couture
Sliding inside the cabin felt like entering an upmarket private lounge, only this one came with Valcona leather sport seats, intricate diamond stitching and the unmistakable S line embossing. We adored the dash, adorned in Gray Oak trim that struck a perfect balance between understated elegance and refreshingly uncluttered design.
The sense of space was immediately impressive, with generous headroom, wide, comfortable seating and a panoramic sunroof that bathed the interior in soft natural light. Audi has even included electric sunshades in the rear – a discreet yet thoughtful nod to passengers in the back, who, naturally, deserve the same VIP treatment. When day turned to night, a gentle cascade of ambient lighting took over, making the transition into evening driving feel effortlessly refined.
Our model also featured Dinamica microfibre headlining and sleek black finishes, enhancing the overall sense of quiet luxury.
Tech With Taste
If you’re tech-obsessed – or simply someone who enjoys not fumbling around with buttons – Audi’s MMI Navigation Plus with dual touchscreens makes every interaction feel smooth and satisfying. We managed to sync our devices in seconds with Audi Smartphone Interface, accessed navigation with zero fuss and cranked up the volume on the Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System, which made our playlist sound like a private concert in a velvet-lined theatre.
There’s also the Audi phone box light for wireless charging and signal boosting, keeping your phone effortlessly powered and perfectly connected, no cords or clutter in sight.
Precision In Motion
Now, let’s get to the juicy bit. The 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engine delivers 340hp and 500Nm of torque with silky finesse, achieving an effortless 0-100km/h time of 5.6 seconds. That’s more than enough to overtake with elegance, join a fast-flowing highway without drama or just to feel a little smug when the light turns green.
The quattro all-wheel drive system, paired with adaptive air suspension sport, creates a drive that is plush yet poised. Whether we were skimming across pristine highways or navigating a gravel driveway to a desert villa, the Q8 kept its composure. We also loved the mild hybrid system. It lets the car coast with the engine off, saves fuel and restarts so smoothly, we hardly noticed – a quiet genius behind the scenes.
Smart Safety Systems
We all like to think we’re excellent drivers – but it’s nice to have backup. The Q8 is equipped with a full suite of safety and assistance features that act like a team of invisible copilots. From lane departure warning, lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert to Audi pre sense front and rear, it watches your back (and your sides and your front) like a very stylish
guardian angel. There are ISOFIX points in the rear for the little ones and power latching doors for the times you’re juggling shopping bags and a toddler.
Add cruise control with speed limiter and airbags all round and you’ve got a cocoon of confidence wherever you go. There’s even an exit warning – a subtle alert to prevent you or your passengers from opening the door into oncoming traffic.
All Things Considered
The Audi Q8 55 TFSI S line is more than just a premium SUV – it’s a statement. It tells the world that you know quality, you appreciate performance and you’re not afraid to stand out (in the classiest way possible). ✤

With two decades of experience with the Marriott International group, from across China to Egypt, the recently appointed General Manager of Sheraton Bahrain Hotel is no stranger to the brand. Taking the helm, he now brings his operational expertise and a fresh vision to one of the island’s most iconic properties.
Congratulations on your new role at Sheraton Bahrain. What’s been the most exciting part of the job so far, and what are you most looking forward to in the coming months?
I am excited to be part of this amazing Kingdom and community, and I feel privileged to take over an iconic hospitality establishment that has stood the test of time. I look forward to working with the team to expand our presence, sharpen our focus on the future, enhance collaborations with existing partners and build new milestones together.
Sheraton Bahrain has seen its fair share of spectacular weddings and events. What makes the hotel such a special place to celebrate?
Various celebrations, including family gatherings of all kinds, took place at the old Sheraton, leaving a lasting sentiment. While we honour that history, we've infused a contemporary flair into the venue. The couples who previously celebrated their weddings here now consider the new Al Taj Ballroom, which is a true gem. It boasts spectacular features and its own entrance for convenience, along with a spacious pre-function area ideal for receptions and catering. Both indoor and outdoor spaces are versatile, perfect for hosting a variety of events.
You started in food and beverage, moved into operations and now you’re running the show. What has kept your fire burning over the years?
I have a passion for all aspects of food and beverage operations, with a focus on exceeding and enhancing the guest experience at every level.
Hotels see all sorts of surprises – what’s the most unusual, funny or memorable moment you’ve witnessed in your years in hospitality?
I’ve had countless memorable moments working in various hotel styles across China, Cairo and Europe. Hosting highly accomplished personalities has always been a highlight, especially during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the G20 Summit in 2016, where I had the privilege of meeting heads of state and world leaders.
Since moving to Bahrain, are there any local traditions, foods or places you’ve really fallen for?
The Manama Souq is a vibrant local marketplace that embodies the rich traditions and culture of Bahrain. This bustling hub is a treasure trove of handcrafted goods, spices, textiles and traditional Bahraini cuisine. ✤
Anwaar Mahmood
Leasing Manager, Edamah (Bahrain Real Estate Investment)
What drew you to the property world, particularly the retail side, and what excites you most about it?
From the very beginning of my career, I was drawn to the energy and dynamism of the retail world. Retail leasing, in particular, is not just about filling spaces – it’s about curating experiences, building communities and creating destinations where people connect. Over the past 20 years, I’ve had the opportunity to witness how the right mix of tenants can transform a property, elevate its value and enhance people’s everyday lives. What excites me most is the constant evolution of the industry. Consumer behaviour shifts, retail formats innovate and malls are no longer just shopping venues but lifestyle destinations. Being part of that transformation, especially in Bahrain’s competitive and
diverse market, keeps me inspired and motivated every single day.
What are your top three tips for someone looking to lease a commercial property in Bahrain?
Understand your market and audience. Bahrain has a diverse consumer base, and success comes from knowing who you want to reach and aligning your business with the right location and property. Look beyond rent – focus on value. The most successful tenants understand that a property’s strength lies not just in footfall but in the overall ecosystem: tenant mix, visibility, services and long-term growth potential. Build a strong partnership with your landlord. Leasing is not a one-off transaction; it’s a relationship. Especially in a market like Bahrain, where adaptability
is key, working closely with your landlord ensures that both sides succeed and thrive.
What's your favourite shopping spot or a hidden gem in Bahrain, and what makes it special?
For me, the most special shopping destinations are those that offer more than just retail – they create an experience. Whether it’s a place that celebrates local culture and community or a new development that blends lifestyle, leisure and dining, what makes it stand out is the ability to bring people together in a meaningful way. It’s about destinations that balance authenticity with modernity and provide spaces where people don’t just shop but also connect, explore and make memories. That combination of commerce and experience is what I find most inspiring.
FRESH FROM JAPAN.
At Mirai, excellence begins long before a dish reaches the table. Fresh fish is sourced directly from Japan’s famed markets, carefully chosen for quality and flown to Bahrain with precision to preserve its natural flavor.
From Tokyo to Mirai’s chefs, every step ensures authenticity and craftsmanship. The result is pristine sashimi, delicately sliced sushi, and seasonal specialties that carry the true taste of Japan.
This dedication to bringing Japan closer to Bahrain is what makes Mirai a destination for guests who value dining rooted in heritage and passion. We can’t wait to welcome you and share this experience with you.
A FUSION OF FINESSE AND FLAVOUR
Coming from a food-loving family, Cypriot Marios Philippou, Chef de Cuisine at Yamaz, Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa, lives and breathes Mediterranean cuisine. He shares his culinary influences, Michelin-starred kitchen experiences and his go-to comfort dish.
With your father being a professional chef himself and your mother's love for cooking traditional Greek dishes, how did these early influences shape the chef you are today?
Growing up in a household where both of my parents had a deep connection to food had a profound influence on my culinary journey. My father, being a professional chef, taught me the importance of precision, technique and the artistry behind creating a perfect dish. I learnt to respect the craft and understand that cooking is as much about passion and discipline as it is about creativity. On the other hand, my
mother’s love for traditional Greek dishes connected me to the cultural aspect of food. The way she would make family recipes, passed down through generations, taught me the power of food as a vessel for memory, heritage and identity. Her approach was more intuitive – focussed on fresh ingredients, bold flavours and the love and care that go into every meal. These early influences gave me a balanced perspective on cooking: the structure and technique of professional cuisine paired with the heart and soul of homecooked meals.
You’ve trained in Michelin-starred kitchens and worked across Europe. What lessons or experiences from that journey do you bring with you to Yamaz?
My experiences in Michelin-starred kitchens and across Europe have been pivotal in shaping my approach to both cuisine and the culinary profession as a whole. In Michelin kitchens, there is an unwavering commitment to not only perfecting technique but also pushing the boundaries of creativity, all while maintaining an extraordinary level of consistency and quality. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learnt is the importance of refining every element of a dish, ensuring that every component serves a purpose and contributes to the overall experience. Working across Europe also broadened my understanding of diverse culinary traditions and ingredients. This exposure has instilled in me a deep respect for seasonality, local sourcing and the significance of tradition in shaping modern culinary practices. Above all, the experience taught me to appreciate the balance between creativity and discipline.
When you’re not in the kitchen, what’s your go-to comfort meal at home, and do you cook it yourself or order in?
My quintessential Greek comfort meal would undoubtedly be moussaka – a dish that evokes both the rich history and the warmth of Mediterranean home cooking. The delicate interplay of roasted eggplant, spiced ground lamb or beef and
the silken béchamel sauce creates a harmony of textures and flavours that feels both indulgent and soul soothing. While I often relish the process of preparing it myself, the authenticity and craftsmanship of a well-made moussaka from a skilled local Greek taverna provides a sense of comfort and connection to tradition, especially on days when the demands of time make cooking less feasible.
Your signature dish, Ktenia with cucumber soup and scallop tartare, sounds fascinating. What inspired the pairing of these flavours and how will it be presented at Yamaz?
The inspiration behind the pairing of scallops with cucumber soup and scallop tartare lies in my desire to showcase the natural sweetness and delicate texture of the scallop, while balancing it with the refreshing, crisp notes of cucumber. The juxtaposition of the warm, slightly creamy soup and the raw, clean freshness of the tartare creates an interplay of both temperature and texture that elevates the experience. The cucumber, with its subtlety, complements the sweetness of the scallops without overpowering them, and the tartare adds an element of raw purity, highlighting the freshness of the seafood. In terms of presentation, I aim for a refined and minimalist approach. The cucumber soup will be elegantly poured at the table, and the tartare will be meticulously arranged on a delicate plate, garnished with microgreens or perhaps a whisper of citrus zest to add a subtle layer of complexity. ✤
MEDITERRANEAN DISHES MADE RIGHT
Palma offers a cuisine that pleases all palates and Fernanda Langhammer headed there to explore the creations of the new chef and menu.
The Kingdom has an array of eateries and they are usually located in the same areas, making them busy and sometimes not the best option on a Thursday night. If you are looking for a dining destination where you have a smooth drive, easy parking and the ultimate five-star treatment, Palma at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain will deliver that with the addition of offering a memorable food experience. The restaurant is located by the hotel's pool and has charming décor. My attention went straight to the green and golden crystal chandeliers that add an elegant touch to the place. Beige tones, mixed with light grey, paint the comfy chairs and tables, while the tiles form circular shapes and vases with vibrant green plants give the overall feel of a sophisticated eatery with a contemporary twist. Nonetheless, captivating and welcoming.
To my joy, Palma has a new chef and, consequently, a new menu. Chef William Khala, who has worked in Japan for the past nine years, demonstrated his passion and care for the food he created very clearly. We had a pleasant chat prior to embarking on the culinary journey that he had carefully prepared for us.
The starters were a delightful and refreshing Rocket & Date Salad (dates from the hotel's garden) with pomegranate vinaigrette and goat cheese, as well as Prawn Crudo, which featured thin slices of raw prawn adorned with bottarga powder for a salty and rich kick, accompanied by velvety basil mayo. The salad was light; however, it had a lot of character, thanks to its tangy notes combined with a sweet touch. The prawn carpaccio was an exciting take on preparing this crustacean in its raw form, with the bottarga adding a delicate fish hint and basil providing an earthy twist, creating an umami flavour. We also had the Black Angus Beef Carpaccio, complemented by aged pecorino and cacio and pepe cream, which absolutely melted in our mouths and the Grilled Asparagus, accompanied by béarnaise sauce and a touch of Dukkah (a traditional Egyptian blend of nuts, seeds and warm spices) on top, adding pleasant crunchiness and taste.
The mains included two completely different pastas: the spectacular (and my favourite), Orecchiette di Gamberi, a delicate pasta in a glassy and creamy shrimp sauce, and Fagottelli, handmade parcels filled with tender beef short ribs that had a light texture yet deep flavours. According to Chef William, they cook the pasta in the shrimp bisque, allowing it to absorb the intense flavours of the crustacean, which we could taste very well, adding an extra layer to the palate. I believe the small pieces of shrimp, cooked to perfection, were the cherry on top of this simple yet luscious dish.
Another main was the Black Cod, beautifully glazed (neither too sweet nor too salty, perfectly balanced) with hummus puree and a touch of coriander foam that added a peppery and floral note, leaving a pleasant, lingering taste. The fish had a firm and flaky texture as we expected and the glaze added the right amount of flavour. What came next was an impressive Wagyu Beef T-Bone Steak. To best enjoy this
delectable piece of meat, we got special French Lepage steak knives (branded with the Raffles logo) that made the experience even more enjoyable. I am not a meat eater but I was accompanied by two carnivores who said in unison that this was the best dish – rare, tender and cooked to perfection – any meat lover's paradise. Spicy Grilled Broccolini and Grilled Rainbow Carrots accompanied it. The broccolini had a kick and a crunch, which was perfect for me; I don't like soft vegetables. The carrots were the same; they had a bite and a delicious grilled flavour that mixed perfectly with the sweetness of this root.
After the savoury feast, it was time to explore the sweet options. Pastry Chef Romain Jeunet joined us for the final leg of the journey: the desserts. We tried three of his creations. The Orange Blossom Crème Brûlée was an innovative way to transform this authentic French dessert. Not only did the orange marmalade add a refreshing touch but the traditional crunchy sugar crust was placed like a lid and not part of the dessert itself – a fun twist. The Citrus and Basil Variation was an elegant composition of lemon curd, lime basil gel and yuzu mandarin sorbet, a complex creation that plays with different textures. The Mille-Feuille, however, was everyone's favourite (if we could say that there was a favourite); the layers were made with super-thin caramelised pecan, chantilly cream and vanilla ice cream. I am not a sweets enthusiast, but I have yet to find a place that serves desserts as stunning as Palma.
The restaurant demonstrates that its savoury and sweet options have impeccable quality, showcasing its chefs' incredible skills. That said, you now know where to go if you are looking for a place that is strong in every single item on its menu. ✤
CARNIVOROUS CRAVINGS SORTED!
Liz O’Reilly indulged her inner meat lover on a visit to the recently opened Tenderloin & Co. at Marassi Galleria.
Living, as I do, in the back of beyond, it’s always good to have an excuse to head across town to the Kingdom’s swankiest mall. So, when I was invited to check out the newly opened Tenderloin & Co., which lies in the shopping destination’s fashion area, I didn’t need asking twice. Surrounded by high-end brands, this Saudi-born American concept blends right in, with its classy deep plum walls and minimalist décor. Tables formed of single chunks of solid wood paired with wishbone-style chairs give a sense of subtle style, while the darkly hued logo tattooed on a feature wall beckons quietly, rather than shouting.
Restaurant manager John greeted us warmly on arrival and, before too long, our first dish appeared, the Grilled Corn Salad. Abundant peppery, green rocca leaves cradled plump, juicy tomatoes dotted with delightfully creamy feta cheese. The depth of the dairy beautifully complemented the smoky char of the grilled corn, with all the flavours unified by a light, sweet honey vinaigrette – a delicious surprise for the palate.
Mari Bites, the first of our appetisers, were cubes of super succulent steak, melt-in-the-mouth soft and oh so tasty. Mildly sweet from a gentle marinade, they were served with Tenderloin’s own sauce, which is dark, rich and slightly sparky with generous hints of pepper – a winning combination.
The Buffalo Wings, usually a humble fast food, were a huge hit at our table. Cooked in maple buffalo sauce, the rich, aromatic amber coating had our taste buds popping before they even reached the table. Crispy and piping hot, we quickly pulled them apart to reveal the tender flesh within. Served with homemade ranch sauce, they were piquant and moreish and the portion was more than enough to share.
Steak Bites came next: thick, juicy tenderloin rounds wrapped in beef bacon and served with crunchy toast squares.
The meat, delicately pink, firm and tender, was perfectly complemented by the sauce – a creamy combination of mushroom and tomato with tiny bits of beef bacon adding a subtle smokiness for an overall taste sensation we couldn’t get enough of.
As well as its many meat cuts, Tenderloin also offers a range of burgers and sandwiches but, mindful of the mains to come, we chose just one to share, the Grilled Burger. Simple and almost elegant, it was a particular hit with one of my companions. Served in a soft brioche bun, we loved the presentation, sliced in half and encased in a silver paper wrapping. The succulent minced meat patty was accompanied by caramelised onions and topped with American cheese for the perfect ‘down home’ flavourful feast.
First up on the main courses was The Ribs – exactly that. A large beef rib in barbecue sauce, slow cooked to a level of tenderness that it literally fell off the bone in one complete piece at just the merest nudge of a knife. This meat, unlike the bites served earlier, was dense in texture and rich in earthy flavour. The theatre of sliding the meat from the bone made it seem all the more tasty and special.
Next, we sampled Creamy Lemon Chicken – a crispy thin chicken steak with a light coat of seasoning and a topping of creamy lemon sauce over lush mashed potatoes. Then came what, for me, was definitely the pièce de resistance – Tenderloin Skillet. A house speciality with good reason, this 230g tenderloin steak is fried in a pan with garlic butter and herbs and served with pepper sauce and southwest fries, which were a triumph all by themselves. A generous topping of roasted garlic chips became one of my favourite things of the whole meal – perfect with the sauce or if, like me, you love garlic, great just on their own or adding a little extra smoky bite to the meat. Despite being more than replete, we finished with two desserts. An exquisite chocolate brownie topped with salted caramel, which really hit the spot, and a superbly sweet reminder of childhood: the sticky date pudding with custard, vanilla ice cream and honeycomb. Fluffy sponge yielded to our spoons as we greedily lapped it up in almost total silence – something that
doesn’t happen often and a sure sign of a winner.
Throughout our meal we tried a selection of imaginative mocktails – my favourite was the Mojito Razz with fresh raspberry, lime and mint with sugar and soda – deliciously refreshing and a great mix of tart and sweet – I’ll be trying to recreate this at home.
We took our time after the last dish, letting our food digest and watching the world go by. I love people watching and this is an ideal spot to indulge as the life of the mall goes on around you. From the enthusiastic welcome to the service – attentive without being overwhelming – our afternoon at Tenderloin & Co. couldn’t have been better and I’m already planning a return visit for more of those amazing chicken wings. ✤

PRETTY IN PINK
Deemed the world’s most Instagrammable café, EL&N takes your breath away with its stylish interiors and decadent dishes. Apple Sharma tantalised her taste buds with this chic little eatery’s speciality fare.
My Monday blues were nowhere in sight and quickly turned to perky pink at the thought of visiting EL&N London at The Avenues –Bahrain. I’d been meaning to check out this bougie café for quite some time, so there was a little skip in my step when my plans finally materialised for an out-of-office catch-up with colleagues.
EL&N – short for Eat, Live & Nourish and pronounced ‘Ee-lan’ –is hard to miss, with its signature cotton-candy pink façade (one of my favourite shades) beckoning you into its fairytale world. Cheerful exterior signage like ‘Espresso Yourself’ and ‘Pretty Chilled’ sets a fun tone that continues inside. Walking in instantly put me in a playful mood as I took in the charm of this ‘under the sea’-inspired eatery. I felt like I had stepped into an enchanting underwater garden, with huge jellyfish-shaped chandeliers and wave-like paper panels floating overhead. The interior is a sea of pink with gold accents on seating and tables. The décor is dreamy yet chic, with plush powder pink and dusky blue scallop-back cocktail sofas. A cosy alcove holds similar love seats, beneath a neon sign declaring ‘You’re the sweetest’. A large LED screen plays clips from other EL&N outlets worldwide, and flowers in every shade of pink cover pretty much every wall and corner. The most Insta-worthy spot, though, is an open, oystershaped seat with a stool in place of the pearl (in pink, of course), surrounded by (yes, you guessed right) more pink blooms! Impressed by the décor, the proud display of cakes and pastries
hinted the food would be just as enticing. We grabbed a corner table facing the mall – perfect for people watching – and browsed the menu while admiring the pretty tableware. Pastel pink plates read ‘Love at first bite’ and the salt-and-pepper shakers announced, ‘You’re the Salt to my Pepper’ – crockery cuteness overload! We started light with Caesar Salad, which came with pulled chicken breast, crunchy wafer-like focaccia croutons and shavings of parmesan. Setting the tone just right, the bread added a satisfying crunch, while the shredded chicken blended smoothly with the dressing, making each bite balanced and full of flavour. It disappeared quickly, a solid opener and a real hit at the table. The Mango, Passion Fruit & Burrata Salad arrived next, looking as pretty as it was refreshing. A ball of burrata rested on a bed of greens, drizzled with sticky balsamic, with mango and raspberries adding colour and sweetness. The mild, creamy cheese paired wonderfully with the slightly tart fruit – fresh, tangy and sweet in equal measure. Moving on to heartier fare, the EL&N London Burger arrived with cheesy skinny fries on the side. The juicy beef patty practically dissolved in the mouth, topped with melted American cheese, lettuce and tomato, all bound together by a special house sauce of ketchup, mayo and mustard that had everyone talking. The fries, drizzled with cheese sauce and chopped jalapeños, were dangerously addictive, prompting repeat reaches across the table. Moving on, the mains had two clear winners. The Chicken Alfredo was indulgence on a plate: perfectly cooked chicken, blended beautifully with creamy sauce, mushrooms, truffle oil and plenty of parmesan. The rigatoni was al dente, the sauce divine and one of my colleagues almost polished off the entire bowl. The Tomato
& Burrata Pasta (my favourite), on the other hand, proved how simplicity can shine. Large shell pasta coated in silky tomato sauce with torn burrata, olive oil and fresh basil delivered buttery, peppery and tangy flavours all at once – humble yet stylishly executed. The Tuna Wrap, meanwhile, provided a lighter option without skimping on taste. The tuna worked well with creamy avocado, a hint of dill pickle, baby gem lettuce and just the right kick from jalapeños. The basil pesto tied it together, making for a fresh yet spicy wrap – an ideal lunch dish. Renowned for its patisserie, we couldn’t possibly leave without dessert. The gluten-free Pistachio Cake, with layers of rose white chocolate and pistachio ganache, topped with fresh raspberries and pistachios, offered a delicious piece of creamy nuttiness –a great choice for those with gluten sensitivity. The Mixed Berry Cake, however, was the crowd pleaser. A classic EL&N celebration cake, its lilac frosting had caught my eye on arrival. With a jamlike filling between fluffy vanilla sponge and topped with an array of berries, it was surprisingly delicate with a lovely mellow taste. EL&N is also known for its speciality drinks. We tried two mocktails – the Chemex Mixed Berry Mojito and the Butterfly Pea Flower tea – both refreshing in their own right. I finished with the V60 Hot, a drip coffee brew using medium roast beans from Honduras. But the real showstopper was the Blue Sapphire Iced Latte, made with crushed sapphire blue flower petals, condensed milk, vanilla syrup and exclusive blue matcha. Sweet, creamy and striking in colour, it’s easily the café’s most Instagrammable sip. Walking out, EL&N’s charm stayed with me. Delivering more than a photo opportunity, its chic interiors, varied menu and wellcrafted dishes make it the perfect spot for a quick catch-up or a leisurely afternoon surrounded by pink! ✤
CALL
BREAKFAST, THE LEBANESE WAY
With its new breakfast menu, naya takes Lebanese classics and brings them to life in a setting filled with warmth, greenery and flavour, as Apple Sharma discovered when she sampled its morning offerings.
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day and, while I’ve never been a big fan of an early meal, the promise of freshly baked Lebanese bread at almost brunch time had me hook, line and sinker, as a group of us headed to naya to try its new breakfast menu. Being located in Seef, and only a stone’s throw from our office, was another plus and it’s especially great for those working in this area.
The restaurant is surprisingly spacious and as I walked in, I was warmly greeted by Brand Executive Chef Ali Saker, shortly joined by Hiba Fneiche, the owner of naya. Partners in life and business, the pair have Lebanese roots, which gave great assurance in the authenticity of flavours we were about to taste.
The interior exudes a calm and relaxed ambience, with a predominantly wood and tiled décor, from the beige flooring and plush deep-blue seats to colourful tiles of Oriental motifs. Various little nooks offer something interesting and charming at every turn – whether it’s the well-stocked mocktail bar, the quaint hexagonal water fountain or an alcove lined with shelves of vases and knick-knacks. A large painting depicting a scene of an old Lebanon street with men smoking hookahs hangs on a far wall, while Mediterranean-style plates adorn the others, creating a welcoming atmosphere. What really stands out, though, is the greenery, with plants everywhere – from potted palms to overreaching money plants, lovingly cared for by Hiba, who has nurtured them herself for years!
As we settled down at a window table, we couldn’t wait to tuck into the authentic dishes jumping out at us from the breakfast
menu. My Lebanese colleague was especially excited, with the food instantly taking her back to her roots.
The ‘From the Oven’ section was the natural starting point for our meal. Za’atar Manakeesh, made from dough fermented for 48 hours using Italian flour, arrived with dollops of fresh labneh made in-house and topped with mint leaves and multi-coloured cherry tomatoes. Ali makes his own blend of za’atar to get the taste as close as possible to that found in Lebanon. It was simply delicious, with a tangy flavour from the sumac, while the mint and labneh added freshness to the dish.
Next came the Cheese Sesame Ka’ek (sometimes also called Traboulsieh in Lebanon). Split open and filled with gooey Akkawi cheese, it was my favourite and quickly won the table over. The bread was irresistibly crisp on the outside, with a light chew inside, while the perfectly salty cheese had everyone reaching for another bite. My Lebanese colleague was in heaven, comparing it to the ka’ek she used to grab from street trolleys back home. From there, we moved to the ‘Levantine Table’ section of the menu. The Hummus with Meat was everything you want it to be – simple, creamy and soulful, a true centrepiece of every Lebanese table. I tried the veggie version and, combining it with the tangy Classic Labneh, scooped delicious mouthfuls of it with one of the softest Lebanese breads I’ve ever tasted in Bahrain. Lahm B’ajin, small pastries filled with seasoned minced meat, topped with a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of salt, was pure nostalgia on a plate for my colleague. Another classic, Lebanese Foul, showed the labour of love that went into it, with Ali having tried many different varieties of beans before
finally settling on Egyptian fava beans to bring this dish to life. Cooked for eight hours until it reached the right texture, the result was hearty and comforting, the kind of dish that grounds a meal. Falafel wrapped up the Levantine dishes. These tasty morsels were piping hot and generously coated with sesame seeds. Beautifully crisp on the outside and fluffy and light on the inside, they almost reminded me of mini muffins – and disappeared far too quickly.
Of course, no Lebanese breakfast is complete without eggs, and the Shakshouka lived up to expectations. Served straight from the pan, the eggs were cradled in a deliciously tangy, chunky tomato and garlic sauce – the runny yolks perfect for dipping into with warm bread. For my colleague, it tasted just like weekends at her grandma’s, and she couldn’t get enough.
We ended, as any good breakfast should, with coffee. Sitting back, I realised how rarely I actually take the time for breakfast – and how effortlessly naya had made the case for it. If every breakfast menu offered even half of what we’d enjoyed here, I could easily see the appeal of this morning ritual.
The breakfast menu at naya is both familiar and full of small surprises, built on flavour, tradition and care. For those who work nearby, it’s a welcome reason to start the morning right. For the rest, it’s certainly worth the journey. ✤
A CULINARY JOURNEY THROUGH IRANIAN ELEGANCE!
Amira Ragab experienced an enchanting exploration of flavours at Homa, where tradition meets modern artistry.
Stepping into Homa, located at The Park in Janabiya, evokes nostalgia, instantly transporting me back to childhood memories of watching a movie about Empress Soraya and Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in my family’s living room. The film's plot faded from memory but the mesmerising beauty of Iranian architecture and design remains vivid. The sheer opulence and artistic flair of the Shah's palace left an indelible mark on my young mind. That, in essence, is precisely the feeling that Homa brilliantly inspires. It's not just a restaurant; it's a portal to a world of elegance and cultural richness.
Upon entering, the thoughtfully designed space feels welcoming, evoking the warmth and intimacy of a cosy dinner at the Shah's palace. Ascending to the spacious second floor, you're greeted by a golden phoenix on the staircase, facing modern art. The décor is a testament to thoughtful curation, showcasing an eclectic blend of traditional, bohemian and modern aesthetics. The vibrant colour palette of rich greens and passionate reds creates a visually stimulating environment. Large paintings and unique decorative objects, such as ornate mirrors, contribute to the artistic atmosphere, transforming the space into a gallery. The intricate patterns of the decorative tiles and small fountain add a subtle detail, hinting at the richness of Persian artistry. Gracefully arched doorways with stained glass and strategically placed sconces, enhance the unique character of the space, creating
intimate nooks and captivating focal points. Finally, lush indoor plants, like the elegant fiddle-leaf fig, bring life and freshness to the interior, softening the edges and creating a comforting ambience. I can't wait to try the spacious outdoor area when the weather is good.
During the day, natural light floods the interior through the expansive windows and strategically placed ceiling windows, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. The variety of seating options, including the vibrant yellow chairs and the luxurious red velvet upholstery, are thoughtfully arranged to accommodate both small and large groups.
The Homa experience extends beyond the visual. Chef Prajwal Poojary warmly welcomed us, his enthusiasm for Iranian cuisine immediately apparent. He guided us through each dish, sharing insightful details about ingredients, preparation and cultural history. The entire team mirrored his commitment, providing impeccable service with genuine smiles.
Adding to the ambience was the curated music of Googoosh and Behnam Bani, two of Iran's beloved pop singers, enhancing the cultural immersion.
The culinary journey at Homa is a captivating exploration of Iranian flavours and textures. It begins with tantalising hot appetisers. The Kashk E Bademjan, creamy eggplant with whey sauce, caramelised onion, walnuts and mint, offers a complex, smoky-sweet flavour, irresistible with warm bread. The Ash
Reshteh, a hearty noodle soup with herbs, greens and legumes, is a comforting classic. For eggplant lovers, the Mirza Ghasemi – smoky charred eggplant with tomato sauce and silky eggs, garnished with a runny quail egg that added to the flavour – is a must-try, the delicate yolk drawing out the depth of the legume. Cold appetisers offer a refreshing contrast. The Borani Bademjan, charcoal-grilled eggplant blended with yogurt and garlic, is addictively smoky and tangy. Slightly chunky in texture, the wonderful combination of garlic and yoghurt was such a hit that one of my companions took a bowlful home!
Even the Shirazi Special salad is elevated, transformed with green olives, feta cheese and pomegranate molasses into a refreshing delight. This dish even has a tale to tell. It was created by co-owner and Head Chef Hanieh Mirbaha in her own home kitchen when she fancied the classic Shirazi but with a little something extra. The main courses at Homa are a true celebration of Iranian culinary traditions, showcasing a range of complex flavours and textures. We tried The Shekar Polo ba Gheimeh, featuring tender pieces of lamb, earthy split peas and fragrant dried lime simmered in a rich saffron and tomato-based sauce. Garnished with crispy julienne-cut fried potatoes and served with delicate sweet rice, this dish offered a delightful balance of savoury and sweet flavours. Then came The Khoresh E Ghormeh Sabzi, my all-time favourite, a fragrant herb and lamb stew featuring dried lemon and protein-rich red beans, served with fluffy saffron rice, a true comfort food classic. The Ghalieh Mahi is another true comfort food but with a bit of bite. My friend actually fell in love
with it from the first spoonful. A sour and spicy stew featuring tamarind syrup, garlic and succulent sea bass fillet, served with fragrant saffron rice, it offers a bold and exciting flavour profile. And, of course, no Iranian feast would be complete without grills, an area in which Homa truly excels. For the ultimate shared experience, the Homa Tray showcases the restaurant’s celebrated dishes: tender lamb shank with dill and fava bean rice (Baghali Polo Ba Mahicheh); spiced sea bass with herbed rice, spicy sauce and pickles (Sabzi Polo Mahi); chicken in saffron tomato sauce with barberry rice (Zereshk Polo); grilled lamb fillet and koobideh kabab skewers with rice and grilled vegetables (Chelo Kabab-Soltani); and saffron chicken kabab with rice and grilled vegetables (Joojeh Kabab). A culinary journey that celebrates Iranian flavours, each meat was more flavourful and succulent than the last, the accompaniments offering the perfect mix to fully demonstrate the hospitality of this cuisine. No meal is complete without Homa's exquisite desserts. The Bastani Sonati, saffron ice cream with cream and pistachios, was a perfect ending. The Faloodeh, with its delicate noodles, rose water and lime, was a refreshing delight. Finally, traditional Iranian tea with delicate sweets provided a perfect and elegant end to our culinary adventure, leaving us with a lasting appreciation for the beauty, artistry and warmth of Iranian culture. ✤

NATURE’S PLAYGROUND IN THE MALDIVES
With twin islands Chill and Play setting the stage for adventure, relaxation and everything in between, Apple Sharma experienced the reimagined luxury of Niyama Private Islands Maldives.
The Maldives had long been on my bucket list, a picture of paradise I’d often dreamt about. So, I was ecstatic when I finally had the chance to make it happen. The anticipation of turquoise waters, swaying palms and soft sands filled my imagination as I boarded the flight to Malé with my partner, bound for Niyama Private Islands Maldives – a luxury retreat made for relaxing or exploring on your own terms.
At Velana International Airport, Niyama’s ‘Welcome Host’ whisked us away to the resort’s private seaplane lounge –a calm yet plush space where we relaxed before boarding our first ever seaplane ride. Utterly mesmerised, I stayed glued to the window throughout the 45-minute flight, watching the stunning teal-green islands unfold beneath us like a living postcard.
Touchdown in Paradise
Landing at Niyama’s dock, we were welcomed by the lovely Marketing & Communications Manager, Anjelee Dabydoyal, and her team. The first impression was instantly cinematic, like we’d wandered onto the set of the popular TV show, White Lotus! Niyama has no traditional reception – instead, each guest is paired with a ‘Thakuru’, a personal assistant on call via WhatsApp. Ours was the delightful Shammu, who welcomed us with ice-cold fruit slushies before taking us on a buggy tour.
Dubbed Nature’s Playground, Niyama takes your breath away with its pristine beaches, lush greenery and warm waters in every shade of turquoise. Secluded on its own private peninsula and spread across two islands – Play and Chill – the newly refurbished Niyama is home to 134 villas and pavilions, 10 dining experiences and even its own surf wave. Our home for the stay was a Deluxe Beach Pool Villa on Chill, where Shammu checked us in and took our dietary preferences. Playful dolphin art greeted us at the door, and inside a beautifully arranged welcome tray with nonalcoholic bubbly and delicious treats awaited. From a hand-written message on the mirror by General Manager, Hafidh Al Busaidy, to matching ‘Chill Play’ flip-flops and hats, every thoughtful gesture made us feel right at home. With a breathtaking ocean view framed by swaying palms, our villa featured direct beach access, a plunge pool, a private sundeck and al fresco bathing with outdoor showers and a freestanding tub. Balancing stylish details with homely comforts, the king bed felt like sleeping on clouds, while extras like free wi-fi, a Nespresso machine, large TV and complimentary ice cream and popcorn (my favourite!) added charm.
After a quick unpack, Shammu collected us for dinner at Tribal, an open-air restaurant celebrating African and Central and South American cuisines. Flickering torches lit a path through the jungle canopy, guiding us to our table. From ostrich and boerewors to lobster on an open flame, the menu offered exotic dishes with bold flavours. Sitting under the stars, with lively music and the sound of crashing waves, I enjoyed some of the best Afro-Latin veggie dishes I’ve ever tried.
A Taste of Adventure
The next morning, we set off for breakfast on our bicycles – provided to all guests and personalised with our names. Pedalling along palm-lined paths with the ocean breeze on our faces was the perfect wake-up. At Epicure, an allday dining restaurant overlooking a stunning infinity pool, we were welcomed with fruit smoothie shots before making our way to the buffet. With fresh pastries, tropical fruit, made-to-order eggs, salads, Asian dishes and even a mimosa station – we were thoroughly spoilt for choice. Cycling back, we stopped at Pump, the 24-hour gym equipped with state-of-the-art machines. With a promise to return another time, we headed instead to Drift Spa for a 60-minute Niyama Signature Massage. Combining Hawaiian, Japanese and Thai techniques with aromatic oils and the sound of real ocean waves, it was unlike any spa experience I’ve had before.
Suitably relaxed, it was time for underwater lunch at Subsix, Niyama’s famed restaurant six metres below the surface. A pontoon boat took us half a kilometre out to sea, docking at Edge, an exclusive overwater dining venue. Descending a three-tier staircase lit by coral-like chandeliers, we entered another world as we stepped into Subsix, to sample the world’s first underwater Nikkei tasting experience. Dining submerged beneath the waves, with schools of fish gliding past the windows, was simply surreal. The spectacular set menu with paired Japanese drinks complemented the setting perfectly – definitely one of the main highlights of our stay.
The rest of the afternoon was spent enjoying our villa and snorkelling at the Blue Hole nearby. Floating in crystalclear waters, we were lucky enough to spot a baby reef shark below (harmless, thankfully).
That evening, we joined other guests at Dune, a chic al fresco beach lounge, for a weekly gathering hosted by the Niyama Management Team. With the sky turning golden, mixed drinks in hand and toes in the sand, it was a lovely chance to meet our neighbours and the staff. The resort holds many special events for guests – everything from braais on the beach and Asian street food evenings to underwater glow parties at Subsix and nightly buffet specials across its restaurants. After drinks, we were excited for dinner – not just any dinner, but one served in a treehouse! At Nest, wooden walkways led us through banyan vines to tables perched among the branches. The menu offered inventive takes on Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian dishes, each presented with flair – the whole setting felt as adventurous and theatrical as the food. It’s no surprise the restaurant has won multiple awards, including the Interior Design Renovation by LIV Hospitality Design Award 2024.
Exploring the Playground
We started the next day with something special: a floating breakfast served in our villa pool. Arranged by Shammu the night before, we tucked into an American set menu of
eggs, pastries, fresh fruit and coffee on a floating wicker tray. There’s nothing quite as serene as eating breakfast in a pool with the waves as your soundtrack – a memory that will certainly stay with me!
Following breakfast, we explored Play and its offerings. The resort runs a busy calendar of daily activities, including yoga, beach football, volleyball, kickboxing, painting and fitness classes. We managed a quick knockabout on the tennis court before checking out the Explorers Kids’ Club nearby, which offers plenty to keep young guests entertained. Cycling on, we passed the coral nursery, where the resort’s marine biologist works with guests to restore reefs. Visitors can even adopt coral fragments to be transplanted back into the lagoon – a thoughtful sustainability initiative.
Further on, a small nook housed Snap Studio, offering professional photo sessions, and Float, the resort’s hub for all things watersports. From jet skiing, diving and kitesurfing to parasailing and glass kayaking, the list seemed endless. Surfing is also big here, with Niyama the only resort in the Maldives with its own private break.
After a busy afternoon exploring the facilities, it was time to relax with Destination Dining – a private romantic dinner on the beach. When we arrived, a beautiful table had already been set up, complete with lanterns and a personal chef. It was the closest thing you can get to dinner on a deserted island, and though a Maldivian downpour added some drama, our waiter appeared instantly with an umbrella to save the evening.
Until Next Time
Our final morning began with breakfast at Epicure, followed by a wander around the island. We mooched around The Lair, a lounge filled with books and DVDs, before heading to the games room for a quick round of table tennis. Nearby shops offered jewellery, clothing and souvenirs – a last chance to take a piece of Niyama home with us. Before packing, we couldn’t resist one last stop at Dune for fresh coconut water, a quick photo op and to reflect on our stay. Niyama Private Islands Maldives invites you to chill and play, and that’s exactly what we did – it’s truly Nature’s Playground, with world-class service in a setting unlike any other.
All too soon, it was time to go. Shammu arranged our seaplane back to Malé, and the staff gathered to see us off. The farewell was as warm as the welcome, leaving us happy, relaxed and already dreaming of our next visit. Thank you, Niyama for making our trip truly unforgettable! ✤

AN INTUITIVE ARTIST
Self-taught creative Mariam Dashti produces art that flows straight from the heart – bold, passionate and fluid. Apple Sharma caught up with her to talk about her ‘deep inner need to create’, her love of colour and the chaos behind it all.
Mariam Dashti
fact: How did your artistic journey begin? Did you find art or did art find you?
MD: I’d say art found me. Ever since I was a child, I dreamt of becoming an artist but back then the art scene in Bahrain was not as developed as it is today, so pursuing that felt like a distant path. Life took me in other directions for a while, but that creative pull never left me. One night, I had a vivid dream of myself painting on a wall. When I woke up, something shifted – I knew I had to pick up the brush again and I haven’t stopped painting since. I believe we all have something within us that’s meant to surface. For me, it was art.
fact: You call yourself an intuitive artist. What drives this intuition and what's your thought process before you start working on a piece?
MD: When I begin a painting, I have no idea what the end result will be – there’s no fixed plan, sketch or reference image I’m trying to recreate. Instead, I let my intuition guide me. I start with loose black lines, letting my hand move freely across the canvas in spontaneous and directionless ways. I just allow what’s inside me to surface naturally rather than forcing a vision to fit the canvas. Then I step back and observe what’s there, almost like reading between the lines. Shapes and figures start to emerge from my imagination and, slowly, a story begins to unfold.
fact: Your work features mainly abstract in bold colours. How do you choose your palettes and shapes?
MD: I’ve always loved colours – they bring me joy! For each of my paintings, I pre-mix my colours from scratch, which adds to the uniqueness of the work. It’s nearly impossible to replicate the exact same shade twice, and I love that. I don’t follow a set recipe; I mix intuitively, trusting what feels right in the moment. Sometimes, just by looking at a colour, I can see the combination that created it. I often play with contrast to push the intensity even further. Of course, I sometimes end up with murky colours – but often, I discover beautiful, one-of-a-kind hues. As for the shapes, they reveal themselves organically from the loose black lines I start with and then I refine them into figures or symbols that tell a story.
fact: Who is your biggest inspiration and what fuels your creativity?
MD: I’d say life itself inspires me, and my emotions fuel my creativity. Art is a form of self-expression; it’s a way to release and process feelings without needing to put them into words. We all experience a range of emotions, such as love, fear, joy, sadness and grief, and that can absolutely show up in painting. Each piece begins from a different emotional and mental state and unfolds in its own unique way. Some paintings flow effortlessly, while others are filled with layers, changes and lessons – just like life itself. But that’s what makes it meaningful. It becomes a process of discovery – not just of the artwork, but of myself too.
fact: What emotions do you hope to evoke in your viewers, and how do you decide when a canvas is finished?
MD: I want my work to stir emotions rather than dictate them. Some may feel joy, others nostalgia or even vulnerability, and I
welcome that range. For me, a painting should be a journey of communication between the artist and the viewer. When a piece of art stirs emotion, provokes thought or sparks the imagination –that’s when I consider it successful.
As for knowing when a canvas is finished… there’s a saying, ‘A finished painting is never finished’, and that is true. It can be hard to let go because I’m very detail oriented and there’s always something more I could add, but there’s a thin line between enriching a painting and taking away from it. When I find that balance is when I decide the painting is complete.
fact: What's the vision for your artistic future?
MD: It’s to continue creating work that is bold, meaningful and true to who I am. Behind the colours and brushstrokes, I’m simply someone searching for meaning, purpose, honesty and freedom of expression. My next step in my art journey is to hold my first solo exhibition and, eventually, open my own gallery – a space alive with colours and imagination, where my work can exist alongside other artists who share the same spirit. Ultimately, I hope to share my art globally and connect with people worldwide through the language of art.
fact: Tell us something that most people don’t know about you.
MD: I’m meticulous with my work but I’m a very messy painter. After a painting session my studio is just chaos – paint tubes, colour and tools everywhere. I always end up covered in paint too – sometimes I have paint on my face, even in my hair! I go into complete hyper-focus, so I lose track of time and everything around me, and the mess just happens.
fact: If there's one artist you could work with (local or international), who would it be and why?
MD: Jean-Michel Basquiat. I love how raw his work is – it feels alive and fearless. He’s an inspiration not only because of his incredible work but also because of his artistic voice. He painted straight from the gut, without overthinking; expressing something real and unfiltered – and that kind of authenticity really speaks to me. Like his, my art comes from instinct and raw expression. ✤

A positive moment of sportsmanship turned awkward when Polish CEO Piotr Szczerek was filmed snatching a cap that Kamil Majchrzak had tossed to a young fan at the US Open. The clip went viral almost instantly, drawing harsh remarks online. Things got worse when Piotr, instead of apologising straight away, suggested that it was “first come, first served” and even hinted that the little boy should have been quicker, which
only riled people up. Critics accused him of doubling down instead of showing remorse. The CEO later issued a fuller apology, saying he’d made a ‘huge mistake’, returned the hat to the boy and disabled comments on his post. Turned out the youngster got the last laugh. Kamil reunited with the fan and handed over fresh merch, smoothing things over. But, it’s a reminder: public moments will stick forever and nicking a child’s souvenir is never a good look.
Meet George Jetson
It’s official! Flying cars are no longer mere sci-fi. Alef Aeronautics has unveiled its Model A: the world’s first road-legal flying car approved for testing in the US. By all appearances, it looks like a sleek electric vehicle, but when traffic builds up, it simply lifts off vertically like a drone. On the ground it can travel around 322km, while in the air it manages about 177km. At USD300,000 a pop, it’s
hardly replacing your Toyota anytime soon, but it does feel like The Jetsons ’ future is coming to life. Alef says deliveries could begin later this year, though with pre-orders stacking up, you may have to wait a little longer than expected. Still, the prospect is thrilling: no more gridlock, just the push of a button and you’re gliding over traffic. Maybe one day rush hour might feel less like torture and more like a video game.
In-Flight Emergency
Most of us have forgotten our passport or charger before a flight. Mr Wang, a passenger travelling from Shanghai to Singapore, went one step further – he left his gas stove on, with eggs still boiling. Three hours into the journey, it finally dawned on him. He alerted the cabin crew, who immediately passed his home address and smart lock code to airline staff on the ground. At first, property managers were sceptical. A
mid-flight stove emergency? Surely not. But once the details matched, staff rushed to turn off the gas and open windows for ventilation. The stove was still on, the eggs burnt to a crisp, but thankfully, the house was safe. Mr Wang reportedly thanked everyone profusely, likely vowing never to multitask breakfast and international travel again. Forgetting a toothbrush is one thing but almost flambéing your house?
