From beans and brewing rituals to the cafés shaping the island’s social pulse, we look at what makes Bahrain’s coffee scene such a rich blend of creativity and community. From new openings to homegrown roasteries – discover the island’s coffee buzz!
The energy is picking up in-house too, as we gear up to celebrate our 16th fact Dining Awards (FDA) on November 23. With voting closing on November 16, don’t miss our special FDA feature that recaps last year’s highlights and gives a sneak peek into this year’s event.
Continuing the food theme, our team’s been busy tasting some of the season’s best new menus. From Scalini’s Amalfi-inspired Italian fare and Mövenpick’s seafood spread to bold flavours at The Bossman, premium cuts at The Don Steakhouse and a nostalgic Egyptian feast at Kadoura, it’s a deliciously diverse lineup. We also talk leadership and education with Vatel Bahrain’s General Director, HE Sheikh Khaled bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, who shares insights on hospitality’s next generation and Vatel’s new MBA programme.
November’s social calendar is equally full, led by the return of Jewellery Arabia and Scent Arabia 2025 – Bahrain’s premier luxury spectacle (read all about it in our showcase feature). Beyond that, there’s plenty to fill your diary – from Russian Seasons’ ballet concert and Annie – The Musical to Alice In Wonderland. Music takes centre stage with Bahrain Jazz Fest and the Manama Singers’ festive shows, while the Bahrain International Trophy horseracing event and 8 Hours of Bahrain at BIC add a rush of sporting excitement.
In other pages, we go full throttle with Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S; sit down with thrash metal band Necrosin and round up some iconic road trips from Ireland to Italy to inspire your next adventure.
And, as always, we keep you on trend with the latest in fashion, beauty, tech and entertainment.
Here’s to a month of great coffee, good company and plenty to look forward to. Bye for now...

BRINGING BAHRAIN’S HERITAGE TO LIFE
Theatre meets tradition at Al Sedra restaurant, where a spectacular new folklore show brings Bahrain's cultural heritage to life through immersive performances, music and delectable dining.
Al Sedra restaurant, located in Muharraq Souq right next to the iconic Pearling Path, is bringing Bahraini heritage to the table with Al Sedra Folklore Show – a new dining experience that celebrates local culture through traditional musical theatre performances. Running every Thursday and Friday until mid-December, the show invites guests to enjoy a meal while watching tales from Bahraini folklore and traditions brought to life.
Directed by renowned Bahraini artist Juma’an Al Ruwaiee, the show begins at 8pm and unfolds around the diners in unexpected ways. Rather than staying confined to a single stage, performers emerge from different corners of the restaurant, transforming the entire venue into a moving story.
According to Juma’an, the concept was to create a new way of showcasing local art and folklore. After exploring the venue, he saw the potential to turn the space into an immersive experience for diners.
With its rooftop terrace, outdoor stage and both indoor and outdoor seating, Al Sedra provides an ideal setting. Large outdoor projectors and TV screens inside the restaurant display short films and scenes that connect the performances and enhance the storytelling, allowing all guests to follow along, even those who don’t have direct stage views.
The show revisits scenes from Bahrain’s history, particularly the pearl diving era that once defined the nation’s livelihood. Audiences will see the rhythmic dance of divers heading out to
sea and hear Toob Toob Ya Bahar sung as families welcome them home. The show also captures local matchmaking rituals and the Zafa or Jilwa pre-wedding ceremony with songs like Ameena fe Amaneeha. The performance closes with a groom’s wedding procession through his neighbourhood to the house of his bride, as well as the traditional Liwa dance.
“I want the audience to feel nostalgic and remember the good old days of Bahrain,” says Juma’an. “I also want non-Bahrainis and people from different nationalities to learn about the Bahraini culture and history of the Kingdom.”
The production features 20 to 24 male and female performers from the Shabab Al Riffa Band, a professional ensemble known for their knowledge and experience in cultural arts. Behind the scenes, the creative team includes project manager Ahmed Jassim, choreographer Ismael Morad, music director Abdulla Rashdan and videographer Yousif AlSayegh.
Dinner is served during the performance, offering Bahraini and international dishes with set menus starting from BD18 per person, alongside à la carte options. With free valet parking and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, Al Sedra Folklore Show offers a nostalgic evening that gives visitors a deeper understanding of the island’s traditions and cultural heritage. ✤

QATAR TAKES ITS TURN ON THE F1 CIRCUIT
With the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix just weeks away, the Lusail International Circuit (LIC) is turning up the heat for a weekend of racing with everything to drive for.
On track, the drama will be non-stop, from November 28 to 30. Beyond the stage, the action continues across a newly reimagined Fan Zone, a playground built for everyone. Whether you’re there for the adrenaline, the family fun or just the irresistible food, there’s something for every kind of fan. The family zone levels up this year, and it’s bringing LEGO magic to the desert. For the first time in the Middle East, LEGO’s global ‘Build The Thrill’ experience lands in Doha, letting fans of all ages design and race their own mini Formula 1 cars, play in a LEGO pit lane and take home their creations in exclusive Qatar GP packaging.
And for those who crave tech-fuelled fun, the thrills keep coming: test your reflexes at the F1 Sim Racing Challenge, go head-to-head at the LED Pitstop, climb the DJ Podium to feel that winner’s rush, snap a memory at the F1 Driver Selfie Station or dive into cinematic immersion with the ‘This is F1 4D’ show… Whatever your thrill, you’ll find it here. 16 YEARS OF FACT DINING AWARDS!
Year after year, the fact Dining Awards (FDA) continue to shine a spotlight on Bahrain’s thriving food and beverage scene, paying tribute to the people and places that shape it.
What began as a select gathering for the FDA has now grown into one of the island’s most anticipated hospitality events – a night that brings together chefs, restaurateurs, industry leaders and foodies in a shared appreciation for excellence.
Looking Back
Last year marked a special milestone – the 15th edition of the FDA – and it was one for the books. After months of preparation, the island’s hospitality community gathered at the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa for an evening of recognition and reflection. The night recorded the highest attendance to date, with 550 guests and more than 110 awards handed out across 56 categories.
Record Numbers
The 2024 awards drew close to 900 nominations, many of them submitted by readers who make the FDA what they are – a celebration of public opinion and professional expertise. More than 68,000 individual votes were cast online, setting a new record and reaffirming how deeply Bahrain’s residents care about their dining experiences.
Honouring the Industry’s Best
Each of the 56 categories recognised two winners – the Favourites, decided by public online voting, and the Best, selected by industry experts and the fact editorial team. The awards honoured the island’s most popular establishments, including restaurants, cafés, bars and lounges, as well as beach clubs and Ramadan experiences that continue to set high standards across Bahrain. From newcomers, fine dining and international favourites to casual eats, value-for-money and speciality offerings, the mix reflected the diversity and creativity that keep the Kingdom’s dining scene exciting.
Chef of the Year
The Chef of the Year award, first introduced to much acclaim in 2023, once again proved a highlight of the evening. Following public voting, the title went to Chef Tala Bashmi, formerly of Fusions at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa. Her win came as she was named a UN Tourism Special Ambassador for Gastronomy Tourism, adding another accolade to her growing list of achievements.
Thanks to Our Sponsors
Behind every successful event is a team of partners who help bring it to life. Last year’s awards were supported by Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa, Porsche Centre Bahrain, BMMI Shops, Vatel Hotel & Tourism Business School, Bidfood, Anorris Events, Asgharali, AQS De Parfum and HSP Marketing. Their generous backing reflects the collaborative spirit that drives the fact Dining Awards forward.
Top Honours of the Night
Among the most anticipated awards of the night were the overall titles. Salero, at The Westin City Centre Bahrain, was named Overall Favourite Restaurant – a crowd-pleasing spot loved for its warm atmosphere and authentic Spanish fare. The Overall Best Restaurant went, once again, to CUT by Wolfgang Puck at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, recognised for its consistency in both quality and service.
Words of Gratitude
“Every year, when we start out on this journey, I always ask myself, how can we make it better? The answer is always the same, this industry is what makes fact magazine and these awards possible. The support from the dining sector and our readers and voters never fails to amaze and humble our whole team and we are, as always, so very thankful.” – Rami Khalil, Group Publisher, fact Magazine
FDA 2024: MOMENTS CAPTURED
The 15th fact Dining Awards created an electrifying atmosphere at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. A WORLD OF COFFEE
Coffee connects people everywhere – from the farmers growing the beans to café-goers sipping the brews. But not all coffee is created equal. Its flavour depends on two things: where it’s grown and how it’s brewed.
Know Your Beans
Almost every cup you've had comes from two main species: Arabica and Robusta. The most popular, Arabica makes up around 60% of global production and is generally smoother, more aromatic and slightly acidic – the kind you’ll find in most premium blends. Robusta, on the other hand, is stronger, earthier and packs about twice the caffeine. It’s the bean behind that intense kick in your espresso or traditional Vietnamese coffee. There are also smaller, rarer varieties, such as Liberica and Excelsa, grown mainly in Southeast Asia. These lesser-known beans make up a tiny fraction of global coffee but add intriguing character and depth to coffee blends.
Coffee-Growing Regions
Good coffee starts with good origins, and the best ones sit along the ‘coffee belt’ – a stretch around the equator, where rich soil, tropical climates and high altitudes work their magic. Ethiopia, often considered the birthplace of coffee, is famous for both rich and citrusy, as well as floral, tea-like Arabicas from regions such as Yirgacheffe and Sidamo. While in Kenya, highaltitude farms produce bright complex beans with grape-like acidity and fruity flavour.
Across the Atlantic, Latin America offers balance and familiarity. Colombian beans are smooth and well-rounded, Costa Rica’s are
clean and crisp, while Brazil – the world's largest coffee producer – gives nutty, chocolatey tones ideal for espresso blends. Latin American origins like Guatemala and Peru bring gentle spice and cocoa hints to the mix.
In Asia, Indonesia’s Sumatran and Javanese coffee is deep, earthy and almost herbal with barely any acidity. Vietnam, meanwhile, has built a unique coffee identity of its own with strong Robusta beans served with sweetened condensed milk – a local favourite that’s gaining popularity worldwide.
Brewing Methods
Once roasted, how the coffee is brewed brings out entirely different qualities.
● Espresso: Blasting hot water through fine grounds under pressure to deliver an intense, concentrated shot.
● French Press: Steeping coarsely ground coffee for four minutes, while the mesh filter brings out the coffee’s natural oils for a richer, full-textured brew.
● Pour-Over (V60, Chemex): Manually pouring hot water over medium-fine grounds in a paper filter. Highlights clarity and subtle flavours.
● Drip Coffee: Slowly dripping hot water over ground coffee in a filter. Essentially a pour-over but automatically done with a drip coffee maker – reliable everyday option.
● Cold Brew: Slowly steeping grounds in cold water for 12-24 hours to create a smooth, naturally sweet drink.
● AeroPress: A portable plunger device that uses air pressure to brew in a couple of minutes. Simple, speedy and versatile.
● Siphon Pot: Uses vapour pressure and vacuum filtration for a theatrical brewing experience and a clean, full-bodied cup.

A LOCAL SUCCESS STORY
Almost eight years after opening in Riffa, 668 Café continues to expand across Bahrain and the region, proving that genuine hospitality and good coffee never go out of style.
What started in 2018 as a 14sq/m coffee shop in West Riffa has grown into one of the island’s most recognised café names. 668 Café first turned heads with its full ‘in-car’ service – a new concept at the time that made grabbing a coffee both easy and personal. The idea caught on quickly, and today, the 668 Café Group operates six branches across Riffa, Al Saya, Saar, Seef Boulevard, University of Bahrain –Sakhir and Abu Dhabi, with plans to open two more by the end of 2025, bringing the total to eight branches regionally.
The group’s next big move is the launch of Aflo Café by 668, coming soon to Bahrain Bay. This new venture – a premium bakery and café concept – takes things up a notch, pairing 668’s signature beverages with luxurious pastries for a more refined experience. It’s a natural progression, but one that brings the same sense of convenience and authenticity that the brand has become known for.
At its core, 668’s charm lies in how it treats its customers. From the moment you arrive, the staff come right to your car to take your order, a gesture that adds ease and a sense of attentiveness. The staff don’t just serve coffee – they remember familiar faces,
personal drink preferences, the type of straw you like and even how long it’s been since your last visit!
True to its slogan, Enjoy the Taste, 668’s menu is just as inviting, covering all moods and moments, from handcrafted hot drinks to refreshing cold creations. At 668, coffee is taken seriously. The café serves 100% Arabica beans, handpicked, blended and roasted to achieve a smooth, balanced flavour. The 668 Signature, a blend of special syrup, coffee and ice cream, remains a favourite, while newer additions like the Belgian Hot Chocolate topped with roasted marshmallows or the creamy Matcha Frappe show the brand’s knack for evolving with its customers’ tastes.
Of course, no visit is complete without something from the bakery. From za’atar and honey almond croissants to gooey Nutella and Kinder cookies, everything is freshly baked with the same care that goes into the coffee.
With a warm and welcoming customer-first spirit, 668 Café continues to grow while staying grounded in what makes it special – quality, convenience and a genuine personal connection. ✤

NEW YORK COFFEE
Since opening its first café in Bahrain back in 1999, New York Coffee has been a familiar name for those who take their brew seriously. This homegrown local brand brings an Americanstyle coffee culture to the island – one rooted in craftsmanship, freshness and a genuine love for great coffee.
Every cup begins at the brand’s Bahrain-based roastery, where 100% Arabica beans sourced from the world’s best coffee-growing regions are roasted in small batches and dispatched within seven days, with stores maintaining just 14 days of roasted stock. The result? Coffee that’s consistently fresh and full of flavour.
Beyond its cafés, New York Coffee supplies five-star hotels, fine-dining restaurants and speciality cafés across Bahrain and the GCC. Its offerings also extend to coffee subscriptions, brewing tools and branded merchandise, bringing the full coffee experience to customers’ homes.

THE ROASTERY
When The Roastery opened in 2018, Bahrain’s speciality coffee scene was just beginning to take shape. Founded by Sadiq Al Thahaba and proudly Bahraini-owned, it became one of the island’s first roasteries – introducing many to the craft behind a truly great brew. A year later came Roast, a small café concept that brought the experience even closer to the community. Now based at District 2, The Roastery operates one of Bahrain’s largest roasting facilities. But its state-of-the-art setup isn’t just about production – it’s also designed as a hub to educate, inspire and connect a growing community of enthusiasts.
Sourcing beans from renowned regions around the world, The Roastery focusses on seasonality, traceability and experimental processing. Its anaerobic fermented coffees, including Grape Infused, Tropical and Rose Tea Hibiscus, are favourites among filter coffee fans for their layered and unexpected flavour profiles. Alongside these, is a rotating lineup of single origins, each roasted with precision to bring out the story of its terroir (environmental conditions that affect the coffee’s taste).
With initiatives like its winter ‘Roast Camp’ pop-up at Budaiya Farmers’ Market, in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs & Agriculture, The Roastery continues to engage coffee lovers and shape how Bahrain experiences its brew. ✤

CAF Café
Originating from Kuwait, this social-driven speciality coffee bar isn’t just about caffeine; it’s about genuine human connection. CAF believes coffee tastes better when shared, and every detail of the experience reflects that notion.

WHAT’S BEHIND YOUR FAVOURITE FIX
Coffee is more than a drink – it’s a cultural staple that’s become part of how the world wakes up, works and socialises. From quirky facts to its health highs and lows, there’s plenty brewing beneath the surface.
Fun Facts To Sip On
● Around two billion cups of coffee are consumed every day worldwide.
● The word ‘coffee’ has come a long way – it began as the Arabic qahwah, passed through Turkish kahve, then Dutch koffie, before finally becoming what we call coffee.
● Legend has it that an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi discovered coffee when his goats started dancing after eating berries from a certain tree. Whether that's true or not, we owe someone a thank you.
● Finland drinks more coffee per person than anywhere else on Earth – about four cups a day.
● Beethoven was so particular about his coffee that he counted exactly 60 beans per cup. Talk about precision.
● The world’s most expensive variety, Kopi Luwak, comes from beans eaten and excreted by civet cats in Indonesia.
● Coffee beans aren't actually beans. They're seeds from coffee cherries, which are sweet and edible. Some farmers make tea from the dried fruit.
When Coffee’s a Friend
● Moderate coffee drinking – three to four cups a day (equalling
about 400mg of caffeine) – is linked to lower risks of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease and certain liver conditions.
● Coffee is packed with antioxidants, which help fight inflammation in the body. For many, coffee is actually their biggest source of antioxidants, even more than fruits and vegetables.
● Caffeine acts as a mild stimulant, enhancing concentration and mental performance.
● Caffeine can also boost metabolism and help burn fat, at least in the short term.
When Coffee’s a Foe
● Exceeding the daily recommendation of maximum 400mg of caffeine can cause jitters, anxiety and sleep disruption.
● Caffeine has a half-life of about five hours, so that afternoon pick-me-up may still be hanging around at bedtime, keeping you wide awake.
● Over time, the body adapts, leading to withdrawal symptoms like headaches or irritability when skipping a cup.
● If you've got acid reflux or IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), coffee might make things worse. ✤

ELECTRIC EXCELLENCE
fact spent a day test-driving Porsche’s fastest EV Taycan Turbo S – discovering that electric power can deliver emotion, precision and pure performance.
Electric cars have officially outgrown their ‘ecoexperiment’ phase. We learnt that first-hand in Porsche’s Taycan Turbo S – a car that proves sustainability can sprint, corner and thrill on command. This was our chance to see how Porsche’s fastest four-door EV performed across the country’s highways, city streets and our special test site – all while proving that electric can still feel unmistakably Porsche.
Sculpted for Speed
The Taycan Turbo S looks like it was shaped by wind tunnels that refused to waste a breath. At just under five metres long and 1.38m tall, it sits low and wide, every curve hinting at speed. Up front, HD-Matrix LED headlights with more than 32,000 pixels showcased Porsche’s latest lighting technology. Our test model’s 21-inch Aero Design wheels – aerodynamically optimised fivespoke alloys with highly polished fronts and Turbonite accents – looked like they were finished with the kind of care usually reserved for fine jewellery. At the rear, the continuous PORSCHE light bar tied it all together with a confident glow – a statement of what just passed you by.
The Turbo S version boasted subtle exterior cues, such as the Porsche crest in Turbonite on the bonnet, while SportDesign sideskirts with carbon inlays emphasised its low, aerodynamic silhouette. The aluminium-hybrid body felt solid yet sleek, with flush door handles that glided out on cue – polite, precise and very Porsche.
Style Meets Substance
Inside, the Taycan Turbo S felt focussed yet luxurious. The carbon-matt interior package added trim surfaces in the front and rear doors, with decorative carbon elements running along the centre console. The GT multifunction leather steering wheel with Mode Switch placed drive-mode control right at our fingertips and carried the Porsche crest in Turbonite, mirroring the bonnet’s bold design cue.
Settling into the Adaptive Sports Seats (18-way, electric) was an experience in itself – supportive in all the right places, finished with impeccable craftsmanship and memory settings that adjusted seat, mirrors and steering column. The individual sport rear seats offered the same blend of support and sophistication found up front.
The Sport Chrono stopwatch dial in Turbonite provided a racing flourish above the minimalist layout, while the Race-Tex roof lining whispered motorsport heritage. Carbon-matt door sills glowed softly with ambient lighting, and everything looked purposeful, minimal and confident – in that unmistakable Porsche way.
Tech with Taste
Screens? Oh, there were screens – a curved 16.8-inch driver display, a 10.9-inch centre screen and a passenger display, so our co-driver could scroll without trespassing on our side (relationship-saving technology).
Porsche Communication Management (PCM) handled navigation, voice control and smartphone mirroring through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 14-speaker BOSE Surround System with
710 watts of power delivered audio so clean it made our playlist feel underdressed. Activating Electric Sport Sound added just the right amount of theatre to the drive’s soundtrack. Wireless charging, USB-C ports and four-zone climate control with fine-dust sensor and ioniser kept everyone cool, connected and content.
Power Without Petrol
Then came the main event. Beneath that sculpted body lives Porsche’s E-Performance Powertrain – dual permanentmagnet synchronous motors, one per axle, in conjunction with the Performance Battery Plus. Output peaks at 570kW and rises to 700kW with Overboost and Launch Control. That meant 0-100km/h in a breathtaking 2.4 seconds. Blink, and you’re in the next area code.
The Taycan’s dual-transmission setup – single-speed front, twospeed rear – worked seamlessly, catapulting us forward with quiet confidence. Porsche Active Aerodynamics kept everything pinned down, while adaptive air suspension and PASM adjusted damping quicker than we could say “Hold on”.
Even at our test site pace, the cabin stayed calm and composed, helped by acoustic glass and solid insulation. Rear-axle steering gave it agility that felt almost cheeky for a car this size and this fast – a masterclass in control and composure.
Endurance Engineered
Anchoring the Taycan’s electric drive is the 105kWh Performance
The Taycan Turbo S looks like it was shaped by wind tunnels that refused to waste a breath.”
Battery Plus, offering up to 626km of combined range. With 320kW DC fast charging, the Taycan Turbo S can reach 80% in 18 minutes – barely time for a coffee. For AC charging, the 11kW system completes a full charge in about 11 hours. Porsche Recuperation Management captures energy during braking and deceleration, feeding it back into the battery –because even slowing down is productive in the Taycan.
The Finishing Line
By the end of our drive, we’d stopped thinking of it as an ‘electric Porsche’. It was simply a Porsche – one that just happens to plug in. The Taycan Turbo S delivered staggering speed with the composure of a grand tourer and the quiet assurance of a luxury car. High-tech yet intuitive, futuristic yet unmistakably familiar. This car isn’t redefining the sports EV; it’s proving that the future of performance doesn’t need petrol – just Porsche. ✤

LEADING BY EXAMPLE
The General Director of Vatel Bahrain, HE Sheikh Khaled bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, is a strong advocate for professional development, sharing his insights on Vatel’s new MBA programme and how it provides hospitality students with a competitive edge.
Congratulations on completing your Master’s in Educational Leadership in Practice from the University of Manchester, UK. How do you think this experience will influence the way you lead Vatel and shape its future direction?
Thank you. At Vatel we always advocate the concept of lifelong learning to students and staff, and personal development is core to our strategy as we encourage our staff to continuously improve, including myself. We are deeply committed to applying the highest standards of educational leadership. This qualification has a strong focus on implementing an industry-led approach and innovative strategies in academic leadership and policy development. It will further enable us to continuously enhance academic excellence, drive positive institutional change and elevate the overall student journey in alignment with global best practices, while taking our context into consideration.
Vatel has introduced the Kingdom’s first MBA in International Hotel Management. What do you see this programme bringing to the table for Bahrain’s hospitality scene?
In alignment with Bahrain’s Vision 2030, Bahrain’s Tourism strategy 2022-2026 and our mission to advance the Kingdom’s hospitality and tourism sectors, we are proud to launch Bahrain’s first MBA in International Hotel Management. This programme is designed to equip learners with strategic and operational competencies, combining analytical and decision-making skills with practical managerial experience. It also encourages an entrepreneurial mindset and a global perspective, qualities that are essential to leading and innovating within Bahrain’s evolving hospitality industry. Working professionals in the field now have an academic pathway after completing their bachelor’s, which allows them to be better equipped for senior positions. It is the first step towards expanding our programmes that cater to the hospitality industry at various levels.
Vatel is known globally for its strong alumni network. How do you see Vatel Bahrain leveraging that network, particularly with this new MBA programme?
Vatel’s international alumni network is one of its greatest strengths. At Vatel Bahrain, we actively highlight our graduates’ career milestones and achievements, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange across the global Vatel community. Through alumni engagement initiatives, professional development opportunities and networking events, we aim to cultivate a culture of lifelong learning by empowering graduates to remain connected, informed and ahead of market trends. Being the only Vatel campus in the region, the introduction of Vatel’s MBA will certainly help attract not only Vatel graduates but all hospitality graduates in the region to visit and study in Bahrain – this also contributes towards achieving Bahrain’s Education Tourism goals.
In your view, what are the most important skills that graduates need for today's evolving hospitality sector, and how is Vatel adapting its curriculum to meet these needs?
Graduates today are expected to have adaptability, strategic thinking, cultural intelligence and a lifelong learning mindset. At Vatel Bahrain, we integrate these competencies through our core
values: success and prosperity; openness to lifelong learning; sharing and social responsibility; and commitment and discipline. Our curriculum is continuously refined based on best practices and feedback collected from professionals across the world, to ensure it meets global standards. Vatel prepares learners for leadership roles in a rapidly transforming industry through an inclusive and diverse learning environment that supports innovation and personal growth. Because of the large practical learning components within Vatel’s programmes, learners always work alongside professionals in the field, in and out of Bahrain, allowing them to supplement their theoretical studies with relevant knowledge, skills and competencies.
Vatel has always emphasised learning by doing. How do you balance academic study with practical experience, and how does this prepare graduates for leadership roles in hospitality? Our programmes are uniquely designed to blend theoretical knowledge with practical application. Besides the frequent weekly practice, students undertake annual internships at leading four- and five-star hotels, gaining first-hand experience in real operational settings. This experiential approach ensures that our graduates are not only academically qualified but also industry-ready upon completion. We take great pride in the
fact that Vatel Bahrain graduates are consistently the preferred choice for employment among our hospitality partners. This unique approach allows our bachelor’s programme students to graduate with about two years of relevant work experience with leading international hospitality brands and hotel chains. We are proud to say that all cohorts so far have received job offers before they graduated.
As the hospitality sector in Bahrain grows increasingly competitive, what partnerships or collaborations are you focussing on to ensure students graduate with a distinct edge? Partnerships are central to our educational philosophy. Through close collaboration with our hospitality and tourism partners, we ensure that our programmes remain relevant and future focussed. Our ongoing partnerships with industry leaders, both locally and internationally, provide students with invaluable exposure, internships and networking opportunities, giving them a competitive edge in the marketplace. In addition to their regular weekly practice and internships, students are frequently engaged in world-class events that take place in Bahrain, allowing them to gain invaluable experiences.
Looking ahead, where do you see the biggest opportunities for hospitality education in the region, and how is Vatel Bahrain preparing to lead in that space?
Hospitality and tourism education in Bahrain and across the GCC is entering an exciting phase of growth and transformation. Operating under the patronage of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), Vatel Bahrain is committed to supporting national and regional strategies for
tourism development. We are actively collaborating with BTEA and our partners on initiatives that align academic outcomes with industry needs, ensuring that our graduates are prepared to lead and innovate within the region’s expanding hospitality landscape and addressing general market needs for the existing workforce. Looking at the global statistics, we see the growth in the Middle East is very promising compared to other regions, which is a great indication for career opportunities in this promising field. Vatel Bahrain started by offering the bachelor's programme, and this year we're very proud to have launched the MBA programme. And now we are looking to expand beyond these by offering lower-level programmes that cater towards operational roles. ✤
ISLAND INSIDER
Alba D'Souza
Head of Marketing, Amriya Group
What’s a typical day in your current role like?
Every day looks a little different – and that’s what I love about it. My mornings usually begin with reviewing performance insights and operational updates across our venues – Masso, Lyra, The Orangery, Circa and Palmyard, as well as for Amriya Group as a whole – making sure the story we tell in the market aligns seamlessly with the one that guests’ experience at our venues. From there, it’s a balance of collaboration and creative development: meeting with my team, operations teams, partners or media on priorities, shaping campaigns, refining messaging and a whole lot more. I also spend time researching what’s trending in other markets – identifying opportunities and planning ahead for key moments like the festive season. I get most excited about tastings with our chefs, exploring new introductions and understanding the storytelling behind the flavours. It’s fast-
paced and constantly evolving but deeply rewarding to see ideas move from concept to culture.
What’s the secret to making a message stick with audiences?
Clarity and emotion, in equal measure. A message resonates when people can instantly picture themselves in the story you’re telling. For me, that means simplifying the what, while elevating the how, using storytelling, cultural insight and design that feels genuinely human. In hospitality, it’s all about evoking a sense of presence. If a visual can make you almost taste the dish or a chef’s passion can make you crave the experience they’re describing, the message has already done its job. When communication becomes a feeling – not just information – that’s when it stays with people and inspires them to take action.
Being new to the island, what’s been the most fun or unusual thing you’ve discovered in Bahrain?
I’m still exploring the island but what’s truly stood out is how genuinely welcoming everyone has been. Coming from Dubai, it’s been such a pleasant surprise to actually connect with people – to meet locals, spend time with them and feel that sense of community right away. One of the most unexpected and memorable experiences so far has been visiting Abbas Almosawi’s gallery. It was my first time stepping into an artist’s personal studio space, and I was completely charmed –not just by his vibrant personality and enthusiasm but by the way every corner of the gallery tells a story and celebrates sustainability. It was creative, unexpected and one of those experiences that stays with you.
BLENDING CULTURES AND CUISINES
With more than 14 years of international culinary expertise, Renzo Martín Reyes Reyes, Head Chef of Saltfire, is setting Bahrain’s foodie scene ablaze with his fiery take on meaty flavours. Discover his passion, creative process and a surprise pantry ingredient!
What first drew you into the world of cooking and how did that passion develop into an international career?
As a Peruvian, food is deeply woven into our culture, it’s part of our identity. In Peru, we have a term, huarique, which refers to a small, often hidden restaurant or even a street tent that serves exceptional food. It’s almost a national pastime to debate with friends over who knows the best huarique. My love for cooking began at home. I grew up watching my grandmother and aunts prepare meals for family gatherings, where everyone had a role to play. As children, we’d help clean grains or beans depending on the menu. Those early memories sparked my passion and set me on this path.
As a specialist in Nikkei, Asian and contemporary cuisines, you’re known for blending culinary traditions in unexpected ways. How do you approach developing menus that feel both unique and inviting?
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with people from many different cultures, and my curiosity about their relationship with food has been my biggest inspiration. I love asking people about their favourite dishes from home, those
When developing a menu, I start by researching ingredients: their origins, cultural significance and how they’re used across regions. Then, I look for connections, how those same ingredients appear in other cuisines and what new flavours can emerge when they’re reimagined together. That’s how I craft dishes that feel both familiar and refreshingly new.
What’s the most surprising ingredient you always keep stocked in your pantry and what makes it special?
Kombu [an edible kelp]. It’s incredibly versatile, it can be used to cure fish, enhance the umami in a stock or even elevate a salad. It’s a simple ingredient but it adds remarkable depth and complexity to any dish.
Which one signature dish on the Saltfire menu best represents your style as a chef, and what inspired it?
The Short Rib Crispy Shumai is the dish that best represents me. It embodies the Asian influence that has defined much of my culinary journey. It’s a perfect example of how I love to merge traditions, taking something familiar and giving it a new, inspired twist. ✤
stories often lead me to new ideas.
A SLICE OF ITALY IN SEEF
For a taste of authentic Italian flavours combined with Amalfi Coast charm, Apple Sharma headed to Scalini at Royal Saray Resort to try the delicious offerings on its new menu.
Italian cuisine is one of the most popular in the world, and while our little island has plenty of restaurants serving it, few capture the quintessential charm of the Amalfi Coast quite like Scalini. Set within the elegant grounds of the Royal Saray Resort, the restaurant’s authentic flavours and relaxed setting made it an ideal spot for a leisurely lunch with my friend.
There’s an instant sense of ease the moment you enter, from the chic yet welcoming atmosphere to the warm reception from the staff – in our case Floor Manager Kumar Thapa and the lovely waitress Susan, who both looked after us throughout.
The Amalfi-inspired hues of azure blue seating and crisp white tablecloths immediately transport you to a sophisticated coastal trattoria. The venue feels intimate and calm, with a low, square coffered ceiling in pristine white, matching chandeliers and cerulean walls adorned with watercolour scenes of Italy. Offering a sophisticated yet cosy ambience, the restaurant features a well-stocked bar in one corner, a small bookshelf in another, marbled pillars and gold-framed artworks on nearly every wall. Overlooking a small terrace, we took our seats opposite a small stage where a live Italian duo performs each evening. As a breadbasket appeared on the table, we turned our attention to the new menu, which tempts with both popular favourites and novel additions. We began by sampling the bread – sliced, rolls and soft focaccia – smothered in black olive pâté and chopped tomatoes to create our own bruschetta. We were recommended a choice of the signature mocktails: The Scalini Sunset –combining strawberry, lychee, apple and lime – was tangy and refreshing, while the Fior di Mandorlo, made with passion fruit, coconut and almond, had a tropical sweetness. Our appetites suitably whetted, we started our culinary escapade with the Antipasti – first to arrive was homemade Arancini. These lovely little golden bite-sized risotto rice balls stuffed with tomato sauce and stringy mozzarella were my absolute favourite. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, they were surprisingly light and made for the perfect starter. Next came the Gamberoni al Limone – king prawns cooked in a spicy garlic and lemon butter sauce, garnished with dill. The juicy, tender prawns, with just the right amount of kick from the chilli, were soaked in a delicious, slightly tangy sauce that demanded to be mopped up with bread, which of course we did. From the salads, the signature Mista Scalini stood out. A colourful mix of greens and seasonal vegetables was lifted by zesty segments of orange and grapefruit that brought a burst of freshness. The citrusy-sweet flavours paired beautifully with the earthiness of thinly sliced beetroot medallions stuffed with creamy cheese, reminiscent of ravioli – a lovely surprise. Chopped nuts added a satisfying crunch to this delightful dish. No Italian meal feels complete without pizza, and the Vegetariana was spot-on. Its thin crust, topped with perfectly grilled courgettes, broccoli and bell peppers, looked scrumptiously inviting with its summery colours and tasted just as good, especially with a drizzle of chilli oil. For mains, we moved on to the Trancio di Salmone – grilled Scottish salmon served in a silky lemon butter sauce. The fish was tender and flaky, beautifully presented on a lemon-patterned
plate that echoed the dish’s zest. Accompanying it was a large, deliciously crunchy shrimp tempura and crispy confit potatoes with plump, skinned tomatoes perched like cherries on top – all tied together beautifully with the citrusy sauce. The Ravioli Alla Bolognese followed – homemade parcels filled with a hearty meat sauce. Rustic and warm, each bite carried the comforting depth of slow-cooked Bolognese, perfectly balanced with the soft pasta. I was ecstatic when the next dish arrived – Gnocchi Al Pesto –one of my favourite pasta combinations. Soft potato dumplings coated in creamy, aromatic pesto – what’s not to love? Topped with cherry tomatoes for added sweetness, it was a comforting dish that I could go back to again (and again).
For something heartier, the Controfiletto Di Manzo – carved prime Australian striploin with roasted baby potatoes and broccolini –was another hit. The melt-in-the-mouth meat, paired with a mild peppercorn sauce, was subtle and sophisticated. Simple but very well executed, it needed no embellishment.
By this point, we were almost full but who can resist dessert? And what arrived next was a showstopper: a beautiful platter complete with smoky dry ice theatrics. Presented this way for special occasions or large groups, this was a real treat as we got to sample several of Scalini’s signature sweets – a decadent chocolate cake with a biscuity, mousse-like interior; a classic tiramisu with silky mascarpone; the restaurant’s famous Crème Brûlée with a crispy white chocolate topping and red berries (my personal favourite); and the Homemade Artisanal Gelato. Served with mini macarons, the gelato came in seven flavours – rose, chocolate, vanilla, pistachio, coffee, lotus and coconut – each one rich, creamy and ever so moreish.
As I finished the last spoonful, I thought how perfectly Scalini captures the ease of Italian dining – honest food, warm service and an atmosphere that makes you slow down. Whether for a leisurely lunch or an intimate dinner, Scalini is well worth a visit. ✤
BRINGING THE SEA TO YOUR PLATE
Liz O’Reilly discovered a veritable cornucopia of fishy flavours on a trip to the Seafood Night at
Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain.
Ishould confess that the Mövenpick has always been something of a favourite. I enjoy the atmosphere of understated elegance, the warm and genuine welcome and I’m a big fan of the spa. But none of that was the reason for my most recent visit. I was there to check out the Seafood Night and, spoiler alert, it delivered, in spades.
On arrival, I was interested to see the latest updates to Silk’s Restaurant. Pale walls adorned with large golden dragée artworks give a feeling of airiness to an already expansive space, broken up by tall circular columns whose thin, gold stripe detailing is mirrored in the flooring. Numerous plants add a touch of greenery and extra character, and an ornamental fence separates a glasswalled terrace style seating area where yet more greenery hangs from the ceiling, highlighting a gorgeous living wall.
Seating is abundant and comfortable with deeply padded chairs and banquets arranged around everything from intimate twoperson spaces to a table set for 16.
We quickly found our spot and headed over to check out the buffet. My first thought was ‘are there any fish left in the sea?’ my second, that I would surely have to come back. I love seafood and there was no way I could possibly try everything in one evening! While I was busy feasting my eyes, my dining companions had already started with a plate of oysters, served on the half shell and delicately briny, their flesh smooth and silky, the perfect start to any evening of seafood indulgence.
Next up, we all sampled the Tom Yum Talay – always my ‘go-to’ if it’s on the menu. Smooth, creamy and deeply umami, it teemed with
rich chunks of seafood, shrimps bobbing in the bright sauce which brought a gentle heat that built with each successive spoonful.
At the sushi station, I was, once again, in awe of the sheer variety. At least seven different types of rolls tempted, alongside glistening fresh nigiri of white fish and shrimps, tender pink tuna and salmon sashimi and big bowls of wasabi and ginger promising a fiery hit to complement the gentle oceanic flavours.
I happily chose neatly cut squares of deep pink tuna. Lightly seared at the edges, the rich fatty flesh was fresh and flavourful. I had to stop myself going back for more.
The neighbouring poached seafood station offered crab legs, several different types of shellfish, plump, pink shrimp and more, with plenty of sauces to choose from.
The salad section was calling with its glowing dishes of green leaves, fresh crunchy vegetables and, true to the evening’s theme, yet more seafood. Avocado hummus boasted chunky nuggets of grilled shrimp, salmon Niçoise teemed with green peas and curly frisée, baby octopus nestled alongside juicy plum tomatoes and the 1970s’ favourite – prawn cocktail.
I went for a surprising option, one I’ve not seen before – the homecured seabass pastrami. I’m always up for trying something new and I loved how the traditional pastrami herb rub, earthy and warm, brought out the delicate sweetness of the fish.
Before heading to the mains in their gleaming silver tureens, I stopped by a station which quickly became one of my favourites. Little nibbles – calamari and prawns deep fried to golden perfection; shrimp tempura, crispy and moreish; fish shawarma, offering a taste of Bahrain’s favourite street food; and a selection
of soft, delicate gyoza and shumai, their bottoms crunchy brown, fillings of vegetables, shrimp and chicken, each deeply savoury and bursting with their own unique textures and flavours.
To be honest, I was close to replete and could have stopped at this point. But those silver dishes could not be ignored, not to mention the fish market-style section where you can choose from a vast array of oceanic treasures and have it cooked to your liking.
Lifting the lids of each shining dome, I was excited to see each new offering basking within. From Sweet & Sour Seafood and Lobster Mac & Cheese to Mediterranean Grilled Seabream and Baked Red Snapper Oriental Style, there was something to suit every taste.
For me, there was only one obvious choice, the Prawn Massaman Curry. Massaman is usually made with beef and I was intrigued to discover how it would translate to this seafood option. I found it a bit lighter (just as well considering the amount I’d already managed to consume), slightly sweet and creamy with the gentle heat of the garlic and ginger in the paste drawing out the other flavours. A briny tang from the fish sauce played beautifully with a light zing – my guess is tamarind – to create a dish of warm Thai welcome that I could have returned to many times over.
Saving, possibly, the best for last in the savoury selection, I headed to the market counter where a huge selection of seafood glowed fresh and bright on a bed of ice. Fish and shrimp skewers sat alongside barracuda, red snapper, safi, gorgofan, sea bream, lobster tails and more.
Elsewhere a selection of shellfish, such as mussels, clams, peeled shrimp and calamari waited to be cooked alongside pasta and sauces on an open flame.
I chose fish and shrimp skewers – each cooked to perfection, lightly spiced, the flavours complementing rather than overwhelming the delicate fish, the flesh toothy and firm – quite an accomplishment on the grill. I also had lobster, almost naked with just a squeeze of lemon. I can honestly say, it was one of the best renditions of this dish I have had in a long time. The succulent flesh held a gentle char from the grill, giving a delicate smoky flavour to the rich, sweet meat. I confess, on this one, I did go back for seconds and would probably have tried to fit in thirds, had I not been mindful of the desserts!
So often with theme nights, the sweet selection feels like an afterthought. But not so here. Once again, a generous array had my taste buds dancing. Banana toffee cake, cocoa ivory mousse, honey cake, a caramalised apple creation with cinnamon mousse, red velvet, pistachio strawberry cake and more, much more.
As always, I went for the Crème Brûlée – I can never resist when I see that glistening burnt sugar lid and the thrill of cracking through to the creamy vanilla cream beneath just never gets old. A perfect end to an evening of flavour and abundance. A selection so wide, it’s been impossible to include everything here, and I should mention there are meat and chicken options too. I’ll certainly be going back to try the many delicious nibbles I missed this time round. ✤
EAT LIKE A BOSS!
Bold flavours, fusion dishes and friendly service were on the menu for Apple Sharma on her latest visit to The Bossman in Seef.
For those of us who live, work or hang out in Seef District, we know all too well that it's teeming with cool and quirky eateries. As loads more mushroom in the area, some remain popular favourites that have stood the test of time. The Bossman is one such gem. A late lunch was the call of the day, which took me and my colleagues there for some relaxed bites, close to work.
As soon as we entered, we were warmly greeted by Founder Abdulla Ahmed, whose friendly disposition trickles right down to his staff, from Chef Jandar Haj Tass to our lovely server Fabio, who took great care of us.
The interior strikes you immediately with its industrial chic meets urban cool aesthetic. Sleek black and gold accents dominate, with plush seating adding a touch of modern luxury. Polished brass chandeliers fitted with Edison bulbs hang overhead, while bold geometric metal walls create a contemporary, minimalist feel. Signature neon signs like KEEP IT BO$$ and FOR CHEE$E
SAKE instantly give a playful yet confident vibe. My favourite part was the clever word-search wall that spells out celebratory messages in glowing purple letters – a nice Instagram-worthy touch and perfect for a fun birthday or anniversary. From quirky artworks to a mural splashed with hot pink words reading 'Eat Hustle Repeat', the restaurant's dollar theme runs throughout. With its mix of cosy corners, elegant tables and stylish mezzanine level, The Bossman strikes the perfect balance between relaxed dining and upscale ambience – a spot that makes you feel like,
well, the boss!
Best known for burgers and Italian fusion, we couldn't wait to jump right in. We began with the Crispy Chicken Caesar – layers of romaine leaves underneath a veil of finely grated parmesan on a base of golden fried chicken strips. The dressing was lovely and unlike a classic Caesar, the chicken was breaded and provided a satisfying crunch, almost like a replacement for croutons. A perfect way to start our meal.
The McKrispy followed, a colourful mixed lettuce salad with red and white cabbage tossed in a rich, creamy mayo pickle dressing. This bowl was full of surprises, from crispy spring roll sheets and tortilla sticks to cashews and peanuts (my favourite) that provided the most delightful crunch.
Then came Holy Smokes, and what an entrance it made. The seasoned fries arrived in a small bucket, generously drizzled with three sauces: avocado, ranch and cheese. As we tried to pinch the fries, Fabio told us to hold on and, to our shock, expertly turned the container upside down. We quickly realised the theatrics were to reveal the thick base of crispy fried onion, which now sat proudly atop the mountain of fries. These were divine, with melt-in-your-mouth shreds of brisket meat calling my colleagues' names, to which they answered with glee. A definite hit at the table.
The Steak N' Crunch had us all intrigued as we tried to decipher what lay underneath a perfectly formed mound of golden, crispy julienne potatoes. Parting them revealed juicy pieces
of tenderloin steak and meaty mushrooms, complemented beautifully by a delicious chipotle-ranch sauce with a slight kick. The umami flavours balanced perfectly with the subtle smokiness of the chipotle. Soft yet crunchy and totally sublime, it was one of those dishes that had us going quiet for a moment – always a good sign.
Next came the much-anticipated Double Smashed Miso. No visit to The Bossman is complete without trying at least one of its burgers. Presented simply on a wooden platter, it was anything but simple. Juicy smashed patties, cooked to perfection and smothered in gooey, melted cheese and fried onions, sat between the softest burger buns imaginable. The deliciously punchy miso-roasted garlic sauce added a tangy-savoury depth that made the whole thing irresistible. It was everything a burger should be – pure comforting, meaty satisfaction.
The lovely earthy smell of the Truffle Lemon Ravioli wafted through the air even before it arrived at the table. Soft ricotta cheese filled the fresh, in-house pasta parcels, coated in a luscious lemony sauce and dusted with lemon zest. This struck just the right balance of citrus and creamy flavours – comfort in its most elegant form. The Pesto Pistachio Spaghetti soon followed and was another simple yet flavourful dish. The pasta was perfectly cooked and coated generously in a delicious creamy pesto, with sundried tomato and pistachios for a lovely crunch. It’s one of those quietly impressive dishes that’s humble but utterly satisfying.
Throughout our meal, we sipped on some of The Bossman's creative mocktails – from Sun Ki$$ed (a tropical mix of passion fruit and saffron) and I’m In Love With The Coco (pomegranate, passion fruit and coconut) to the delightful Lavanta Limone, made with lavender and lemon.
We ended on a sweet note – or two. The Crispy Hazelnut featured multiple layers of chocolate sponge and mousse encased in a chocolate shell. Soft mousse, spongy cake and a layer of hazelnut brittle in between ticked all the boxes. It didn't feel heavy at all, instead surprisingly light, fluffy and deliciously chocolatey – what's not to love? The San Sebastian cheesecake was baked and presented beautifully 'en papillote' in parchment paper with a medley of berries. This little parcel of joy, with its golden caramelised top and creamy, custard-like centre, was the perfect ending to our afternoon as we enjoyed it over cups of Americanos, cappuccinos and lively conversation.
The Bossman delivers exactly what it promises: bold flavours, creative fusion and an atmosphere that's equal parts fun and sophisticated. For Seef regulars, it's a reliable choice that continues to impress. For everyone else, it's well worth the visit. ✤
A CARNIVORE’S PARADISE
In search of the perfect steak, Bushra Hakim discovered The Don Steakhouse in Janabiya.
There was once a time when all I ate was chicken. Then, one day, I gave in to a bite of red meat and haven’t looked back since. My mission to try some of Bahrain’s best steaks led me to the local favourite, The Don Steakhouse. Located at District 1 in Janabiya, it’s a no-fuss spot that’s clearly built for people who take their meat seriously.
Inside, the industrial design theme runs throughout, with dark colourways of blacks and browns. A mural of sculpted bulls, backlit in gold, is central to the room. The dark wood tables, olive-green leather chairs and warm amber lighting give the restaurant a comfortable yet elevated atmosphere. Details like exposed black piping and a glass floor inlaid with wood slices add a rugged charm that fits perfectly with its spirit.
We started our meal with the Wagyu Chowder, a creamy, comforting soup dotted with diced corn, carrots and a hint of brininess from black olives. The seared Wagyu striploin added warmth and depth, with its fatty bits melting beautifully into the base. Topped with paprika and olive oil, it was a hearty and rather luxurious twist on a classic chowder.
From the appetisers, The Don Beef Chow Chow instantly stole the spotlight with its theatrical presentation. Skewers of Angus Beef, brushed with the restaurant’s signature basting, were brought to the table alongside a flaming hibachi, where our lovely server Wajid charred them to perfection. Each bite was tender, smoky and melt-in-your-mouth delicious.
From the sharing plates, Heaven Tenderloin Bites were one of my favourites. Imagine bruschetta but topped with soft pieces of grilled Angus Beef instead of tomato. The toasted baguette had the perfect crunch, while chimichurri added a herby kick and caramelised onions brought a little sweetness. It really did live up to its name.
The Brisket Tacos were another exciting offering. Bite-sized hard shells filled with slow-cooked brisket, shredded lettuce, jalapenos, truffle mayo and bits of beetroot for crunch and colour. A squeeze of lime pulled everything together and cut through the richness nicely. The Lamb Chops were soft, fatty and full of flavour. The use of Bahrain’s popular black lemon gave a tangy twist that balanced out the gaminess of the lamb. It was definitely one of the items we could’ve easily had more rounds of. Then came something unexpected: meat sushi. It’s a clever idea for anyone who doesn’t eat fish but still wants to join in on the fun. The Wagyu Striploin Maki Roll was made with seared Australian Wagyu, a miso-yuzu glaze and a touch of wasabi that definitely woke up the taste buds. The Heaven Crispy Shrimp Maki Roll was a favourite at the table – crunchy shrimp with orange tobiko and togarashi powder on top, rolled with avocado, cucumber, carrots, lettuce and red tanoki. It was light, fresh and a nice break from all the heavier dishes. Then came the main event: The Don’s famous steaks. The menu offers both Wagyu and Certified Angus Beef (CAB) cuts, each distinct in its own way. Wagyu, known for its marbling, has fat that melts during cooking, creating a buttery texture and deep flavour. CAB, on the other hand, is leaner and more traditional, prized for its bold beefiness and tenderness. Think of Wagyu as luxury and CAB as comfort, both equally enjoyable depending on your mood.
The Wagyu Striploin was a beautifully marbled 7-8 grade cut, tender and soft with just the right amount of fat. Medium
doneness is the way to go here to enjoy it at its best. The Ribeye Wagyu was even richer, 300 grams of buttery goodness that leaned more towards indulgent than lean.
The Full Slab CAB Ribs was impossible to ignore, a whopping 1.2kg of slow-cooked meat glazed in house-made sauce, served with a baked potato. Sticky, savoury and smoky, it was extravagant in every sense. The Beef Cheek Wagyu arrived next, with a pair of metal claws, it revealed a gooey, fall-apart interior. The meat was incredibly soft, paired with a spicy-sweet barbecue sauce and served with corn ribs. Messy, rich but very satisfying. For those who prefer less fat, the Tenderloin CAB steaks were an excellent contrast. Lean, flavourful and perfectly seared, they’re ideal for anyone who finds Wagyu a little too rich.
My personal favourite, though, was the Skewer Wagyu. Sirloin Wagyu cubes hung from an upside-down skewer and were torched right at the table. Every bite burst (quite literally) with juices and flavour. It was downright addictive, and I had to stop myself from reaching for another one. The Skewer Picanha, the Brazilian cut known for its thick fat cap, followed. Charred and served with rice and sauce, it offered that satisfying crispiness that comes only from fire and fat working together. Finally, the 1.2kg Tomahawk CAB made its theatrical entrance, flame-thrown at the table, the fat practically falling apart with every slice. It was primal, indulgent and the perfect finale to a meat-centric feast. By the end of it all, the table had gone quiet. Everyone was too busy savouring the flavours to speak. This only meant that The Don Steakhouse doesn’t do gimmicks, it simply celebrates good meat in all its glory. ✤
A TASTE OF ALEXANDRIA IN BAHRAIN
Dining at Kadoura felt like rediscovering home for Amira Ragab, as she sampled the familiar flavours of Egyptian cuisine at its authentic best.
There are restaurants that feed you. Then there are restaurants that welcome you home. For me, Kadoura falls firmly into the latter category. It is the place I instinctively take friends who want to understand the Alexandria I grew up in. Although I now live in Bahrain, this restaurant in Seef District has become a portal to the coastline and culinary soul of my city. It is where nostalgia is plated generously and where seafood is treated as a love language.
This latest visit was special. Not a quiet dinner with one companion but a full gathering of friends, hungry both for good food and for a glimpse of my Egyptian roots. Kadoura is a name that sparks joy in my family, especially for my uncle back in Alexandria. In our home, the phrase “shall we go for seafood?” has always been synonymous with Kadoura, no further clarification required. Dining here in Bahrain feels like that tradition has travelled with me.
Kadoura’s charm reveals itself instantly. The space is bright and expansive, yet wonderfully relaxed. The atmosphere tells you to take your time. Gentle classics by Warda, Umm Kulthum and Abdel Halim float through the room, offering a soundtrack to memory. You never feel hurried. Instead, you feel invited to stay, to savour, to linger.
The welcome is always warm. The staff remembered my previous visits and guided our large group to a generous table that suited the lively energy we had arrived with. Once seated,
the feast began to unfold.
Large groups offer a unique culinary advantage. When there are only two of you, you tend to default to familiar favourites. With many around the table, however, comes courage. Plates multiply and suddenly the entire menu becomes an exciting playground. As the resident foodie of the group, I encouraged everyone to order something different. It was our chance to explore.
We began with three vibrant salads: Sunshine Crunch, Avocado and Quinoa. Each offered its own medley of textures. Crisp, fresh and beautifully plated, they set the perfect tone. The Sunshine Crunch stole my heart with tart green apple and juicy mango, brightened further by caramelised walnuts. A salad that is both sweet and refreshing is my personal weakness, and this one delivered delight in every bite.
Then came the starters, which arrived like a joyful parade of Egyptian seafood traditions. I had not tasted shrimp molokhiya for a long time, and its arrival felt like rediscovering a classic hit you once adored. Silky, rich and aromatic, every spoonful played a nostalgic melody in my mind. I used to be skeptical of pairing molokhiya with shrimp, until a few years ago when I finally surrendered to its brilliance. This rendition was the best I have tasted yet.
A platter of pickled tomatoes, fried aubergine and spicy green peppers embodied the rustic appetisers that every Egyptian seafood restaurant proudly offers. Creamy hummus and smoky moutabel were scooped up eagerly with piping hot fried pita bread, while the tahini sauce found its way into nearly every
bite. Then a dish arrived that was entirely new to me: vine leaves stuffed with rice and topped with shrimp. It was so rich and unique, it could have stood as a dish on its own.
I could not resist Kadoura’s signature seafood cream soup. Laden with mussels, calamari and shrimp, it felt like a warm embrace in a bowl. Comforting, aromatic and bursting with ocean flavour. The mussels that followed were exceptional. Sautéed with garlic, vinegar and lemon, each morsel was bright and satisfying, lifted by the sweetness of mixed bell peppers. It reminded me that mussels, when treated with respect, can be truly unforgettable. Our table being full of seafood enthusiasts meant shrimp had to appear in multiple forms. We ordered them grilled in true Kadoura fashion, the jumbo pieces served over finely diced sautéed vegetables. Flavourful, perfectly charred and utterly addictive. The famed butterfly shrimps were as beautiful as they were delicious. We also tried the chef’s special, Egyptian-style grilled shrimp, smothered in a bold sauce that carried depth and character.
I sampled a bite of my friend’s calamari tagine in tomato sauce. I usually avoid tomato-based tagines because they tend to feel heavy or give me heartburn, but this one was tender, bright and surprisingly gentle. Another friend offered me a forkful of creamy prawn and mussel pasta, rich with cheese and pure indulgence. A sinful delight, worth every calorie.
As an Alexandrian, no matter how many dishes arrive before it, fish will always be the star. I ordered the grilled Radtha seabream. Smoky, moist and seasoned with authenticity, it demanded to be paired with sayadiya rice, that aromatic childhood favourite. It transported me instantly to my mother’s kitchen. My fellow Alexandrian friend chose fried Sherry fish, presented like a sculpture. The spine was removed and fried separately, positioned dramatically atop the fish and surrounded by golden aubergine rounds drizzled with garlicky tomato sauce. I am not a great lover of aubergine, yet this dish converted me momentarily. Throughout the meal, we sipped on brightly named signature drinks: Bur Said, a playful raspberry refresher; Sharm El Sheikh, a zesty blue mojito reminiscent of seaside holidays; and Kadoura, a sweet citrus fizz with pink soda and a sprig of rosemary that became the table favourite.
By this stage one might assume we had reached our limit. Yet walking out of Kadoura without dessert feels like breaking a rule that should never be broken. As any Egyptian would do, I ordered rice pudding. One spoonful and genuine emotion hit me. Creamy, soft and nostalgic to the core, it was comfort expressed as dessert. My friends opted for a molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream, irresistible with its molten centre spilling out as we cut into it.
Our evening at Kadoura reminded me that dining is not merely about food. It is memory, culture and love placed on a plate. It is laughter shared across a table full of dishes. It is finding a piece of home far from home. ✤

ON THE ROAD
With the weather cooling and the kids back at school, the highways are quiet and it’s time to take a look at some iconic road trips. From Ireland to Italy and more, we’ve come up with some journeys you won’t want to miss.
Amalfi Coast, Italy
One of Europe’s most scenic routes, the challenging drive along the narrow SS163 takes in the famed lemon-scented tourist hotspots of Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi.
At just over 60km, this is not a long route but there are plenty of places you’ll want to linger. You’ll probably start your journey in Naples, the gateway to the Amalfi Coast and a bit of a love-hate destination. Some say it’s dirty and crime-ridden; others (us included) find it gorgeously authentic and exciting. Take some time out of your itinerary to visit the National Archaeological Museum – it’s both beautiful and fascinating.
A day trip to Pompeii is a must to explore the storied ruins of the ancient Roman city, destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD.
Park up in Bomerano and hike the Path of the Gods to take in magnificent coastal views before heading down 1,700 steps to Positano where you’ll find colourful cascading buildings, posh galleries and high-end boutiques.
The beautiful mountain town of Ravello is also worth a slight detour from the coast road – it’s 365 metres above the sea – and is home to gorgeous cliffside gardens, the Moorish-style Villa Rufolo and the famous Ravello Festival, which features sunrise and sunset concerts as well as exclusive performances.
Top Tip: Avoid the summer months – from June to September – you really don’t want to be on these roads during that period!

Great Ocean Road, Australia
If you’re venturing down under, make that long plane journey worthwhile by taking in one of the world’s top 10 road trips. The Great Ocean Road – the name pretty much says it all – takes in some of Australia’s most gorgeous and rugged coastline and, in a country famed for its beaches and beauty, that’s saying something.
It’s a good idea to travel from west to east, starting in Warrnambool, to avoid the traffic going the other way. And, if you’re planning any overnight stop offs, other than camping (hint: you really should, there are some seriously cute properties to check out), then you’ll need to book around six months in advance.
From Warrnambool – where you should visit Cheese World – to Cape Otway, you’ll be heading along the Shipwreck Coast, known thus, unsurprisingly, for the many ships that have wrecked along the route. It’s the place to see awe inspiring rock formations, such as The 12 Apostles, a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of Port Campbell National Park, (spoiler alert, there are not 12 of them). The Bay of Islands, along this 32km stretch, is home to a colony of rare black-faced cormorants, and there’s the chance to dive the wreck of the Falls of Halladale, which sank in 1908.
At Cape Otway, sleep under the stars in the Great Otway National Park and cross your fingers for the chance to spot wild koalas!
Then head back towards Melbourne along the Surf Coast, which is dotted with the kind of gorgeous, long stretches of shoreline, such as Bells Beach, that you see on TV.
Top Tip: Google ‘koala sounds’ on YouTube to make spotting them easier – it’s hilarious!
Pacific Coast Highway, USA
Aside from the iconic Route 66, the Pacific Coast Highway is possibly the world’s most famous road route, running from Washington State in the north, through Oregon and down to the tip of California. And it’s the Golden State’s 1,056km Highway 1 that’s the most popular stretch, famous for its dramatic ocean views, cliffs and winding roads featuring landmarks like the Big Sur coastline.
In Northern California, you’ll pass through the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, home to the Avenue of the Giants, a scenic 51.5km route famous for the towering coastal redwoods that line the route.
Driving through California, there are several ‘mustsee’ destinations, including San Francisco, home of the Golden Gate Bridge, which you can see on a bicycle tour, and the former prison island Alcatraz, where you can take a fascinating inside and outside tour. In Los Angeles, head to Hollywood for a studio tour, visit the Sunset Strip for early ‘80s rock memories and take a trip to Venice Beach, just because.
End your road trip in San Diego, where you can take a break on one of the numerous gorgeous beaches, visit galleries, studios and museums and check out the USS Midway, an aircraft-carrier-turned-museum.

Top Tip: Drive from north to south, so you’ll always have those glorious ocean views on your side of the road.
Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland
At 2,600km, Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way is one of the world’s longest defined coastal routes, running from the Inishowen Peninsula in Co. Donegal in the north to Cork in the south. The wild terrain boasts towering cliffs and spellbinding bays, beaches and mystical islands, where old traditions and the Irish language are preserved.
This is the original slow tour, where you’ll want to take your time and soak in the scenery and history. The Inishowen Peninsula runs a circular route taking in awe-inspiring scenery including the Gap of Mamore, where the road winds steeply up a 240-metre-high pass, offering a panoramic view of the entire northern coastline. Be warned, though, the 30-degree descent is positively alpine.
Further south, around the county town of Sligo, make sure to take in Mullaghmore, a dramatic headland falling to a gorgeous sandy beach with Benbulben mountain as its backdrop. And, if you’re that way inclined, Sligo has some great nightlife and restaurants.
Further south again, on the edge of The Burren, in County Clare, don’t miss the Cliffs of Moher, one of Ireland’s favourite visitor experiences. You can walk the safe, paved pathways and view the famous cliffs on Europe’s western frontier and enjoy the spectacular vistas over the Atlantic Ocean and the Aran Islands.
The Dingle Peninsula, dubbed ‘The most beautiful place on Earth’ by National Geographic is rich in culture, history and nature, including abundant marine life like dolphins (it was home to the famed Fungie), whales and puffins, and land animals such as red deer, foxes, hares and stoats. There are sanctuaries to visit and whale and dolphin watching tours aplenty. Here’s where you’re most likely to hear Gaelic spoken and there’s always music to be found.
Head to the Ring of Kerry for Ireland’s tallest mountains, great surf and both river and coastal fishing, then follow the coast down to Cork, Ireland’s sixth century, second largest city. Here you’ll find loads to do from visiting the English Market, a must for foodies, to a trip to nearby Blarney Castle. Top Tip: Make sure you kiss the Blarney Stone to come away with the gift of the gab! ✤

HERITAGE MEETS HIGH STYLING
Luxury house Burberry draws inspiration from classic cuts, countryside living and gorgeous fabrics for its latest collection.
Raincoats boast signature silhouettes in shredded viscose blends, corduroy and cropped embossed leathers while the new Ellingham car coat comes with added volume. Quilted jackets appear in geranium print and scarves with chunky fringes are integrated into jackets in shearling and alpaca blends.
Robes and jackets are reworked as softly tailored coats in cashmere and mohair wool, with chunky knit shawl collars. Silk pyjama shirts and trousers are layered underneath and velvet brocades, evoking the designs of William Morris, are cut into equestrian-inspired coats and suits.
Cross-stitched knitwear references historic tapestries and a rich palette of tapestry brown, deer taupe, punky red and yellow, alder and maze green anchors the collection. Tartan-inspired wool checks sit alongside the Burberry Check in intarsia leather.
Savile Row tailoring meets country dressing as wool and corduroy suits are paired with jodhpur trousers and pleated check kilts, while brushed wool appears in rollnecks, ribbed sweaters and joggers.
Artisanal craft brings a sense of revelry and romanticism to evening wear, with velvet damask dresses and gathered silhouettes and peacock prints are hand-cut to create a feathered effect. In shoes, shapes synonymous with the countryside come in
weaves and embossed leathers, modelled on richly furnished interiors. Cavalier and Ledger boots are cut in embossed and intarsia leather, while court-inspired pumps taper to pointed toes. Cameo slippers come in quilted velvet.
The new Bridle bag fuses saddle shapes with a curved top handle and reins-inspired hardware, while Highlands bags are weathered in intarsia check leather.
For the new-season campaign, Chief Creative Officer Daniel Lee took inspiration from the fabrics and grand interiors that inspired the Burberry Winter 2025 show. He says: “We wanted to bring the collection to life and to tell the story behind all those incredible textiles.”
Shot in the drawing rooms and grounds of Thomas Ripley’s Palladian masterpiece, Wolterton Hall, the campaign brings together a cast of talents including British actor Rupert Everett, model and artist Jeny Howorth and Luther Ford, known for his portrayal of Prince Harry in The Crown. They appear alongside models Lina Zhang, Assa Baradji, Tristan Watkins, Leon Keenan and Iris Lasnet, who made her runway debut in Burberry’s Winter 2025 show. ✤

Book of Lives: A Memoir of Sorts
By Margaret Atwood
Out November 4, Book of Lives: A Memoir of Sorts marks the long-awaited memoir of the author of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Testaments. Raised among the forests of northern Quebec by scientific parents, Margaret Atwood recounts an unconventional childhood that shaped her fierce curiosity and moral lens. Moving through bohemian circles, political upheavals and her life with the late Graeme Gibson, long-time partner in both love and art, she traces the moments that forged her voice. Reflective, witty and unsparing, Book of Lives: A Memoir of Sorts reveals the split self behind the storyteller.
THRASHING HEADBANGERS
One of Bahrain’s renowned metal bands, Necrosin have been blazing the stages locally and internationally with fast-paced riffs and snarling sounds of thrash. Apple Sharma caught up with the cofounder, Mohammed Tael, to chat more about the band’s metal journey.
fact: How did the band come together and what first drew you to thrash and extreme metal?
MT: Mahmood Al Ansari (drummer, backing vocals) and myself (lead vocals and guitars) have been around in the metal scene since our teens, meeting at events, gatherings and shows in town. Around the end of 2017, I bumped into him at another show and since both of us didn’t have any active bands at the time and were interested in playing together (he’s a fantastic drummer), we founded Necrosin in early 2018. And as soon as we were in a room together, things seemed natural and the chemistry was fantastic, and it just gets better as the years go by. In 2023, we played our first show in Dubai, opening for Incantation and that’s when Omar Zainal from the bands Hellionight and Smouldering in Forgotten jumped in on bass and has been a part of our live trio.
As for thrash and extreme metal, there’s such a duality to the music where it could be complex, technical and lyrically deep or it could be simple and straight to the point. Either way, it’s a free form of expression and a medium for profound storytelling.
fact: Bahrain isn’t particularly known for its metal scene. What’s it been like creating and performing here and how has it changed since you started?
MT: Bahrain’s metal scene may be small but it’s a dedicated and loyal one – we’ve always been supported and felt our friends and family backing us up. I remember back when we were teens in the early 2000s, shows were largely comprised of local cover bands, and that has definitely changed. There are currently bands on their second and third original releases. We have a lot of local talent.
We’ve had multiple shows over the years that hosted legendary bands in Bahrain that, as a teenager, I would only have dreamt of seeing, let alone share the same stage in our own beloved hometown – thanks to the efforts of Metal Fest and the crew behind it. We also have friends who always come to the shows from around the GCC and the region, like Saudi, Kuwait and Oman – our Omani brothers always show up in full force and we love it. The metal scene there is picking up, and they are a dedicated group of awesome people.
fact: This year, you won the Wacken Metal Battle Middle East and played at Wacken Open Air, the world’s biggest metal festival. How did it feel to be the first Bahraini band to do so?
MT: It was all surreal. Wacken Open Air is the biggest metal festival in the world and is visited by about 80,000 people every year, not to mention, it’s every metal fan’s dream to attend let alone play! And we are definitely grateful and so honoured to have been the first Bahraini Band and one of a handful of bands from the Middle East to have ever played it. It had its set of challenges and teaching moments, and we are all the better for it. Also, friends from Bahrain and Oman came out to see us and that meant the world to us. We got to meet a lot of bands and people from all corners of the world and made some great, hopefully, lasting connections and friendships. It was very cool to see how such a massive operation operates behind the scenes.
Mahmood,
fact: Who are your biggest musical influences and how do they shape the Necrosin sound?
MT: Our Influences vary; we listen to a wide variety of metal and music in general but, bands like Judas Priest, Slayer, early Sepultura, Metallica, Motörhead, Black Sabbath, W.A.S.P, Bolt Thrower and Death, have been massive influences. Necrosin’s songwriting is a melting pot of our influences, but we definitely do not try and sound like any of them. We may take inspiration from the way they write lyrics or play their instruments, using it to widen our musical vocabulary and philosophy to compose and understand structural ideas, but I also believe that we allow our sound to express our current states of being, using our surroundings and experiences to help us compose and get our music’s message across. It could be a personal journey or one that’s inspired by literature, movies or even current or historic events. No boundaries.
fact: With Metallica coming to Bahrain in December, how excited are you to have them play on your home turf? Any thoughts on sharing the stage with them one day?
MT: I feel like I’m dreaming; it was such a proud moment when I heard the news – it spread like wildfire! I recall when I was in school and learnt parts of their song Master of Puppets on guitar and called my friends to play it to them over the phone. We would spend days listening to and studying Metallica. So, having them play in Bahrain is beyond a dream and the prospects of us sharing the stage with them one day would be the realisation of that dream and a major gateway for local musicians to reach for the stars.
fact: Your first EP dropped in 2023. Is there another release in the pipeline, and what can fans look forward to this time?
MT: That is correct! Hard to believe it’s been two years and some changes since that release – so much has happened in between. We’ve been enjoying a bunch of great opportunities and it’s getting us excited to get back in the studio and forge the next release. We have a few songs written and some are only skeletons that are still being constructed, but we are hopeful to be able to start recording by mid-2026. We enjoy the process of writing and watching our ideas take form and come to life, immensely!
fact: If you could jam with any musician, living or dead, who would it be and why?
MT: Lemmy Kilmister from Motörhead would be my choice. I would definitely enjoy listening to his take on things and I’d jump at the chance to pick his brains on music, life and the history of rock and roll – he’s been through most of it. He was a roadie for Jimmy Hendrix, witnessed the creation of punk rock and was an integral part of why thrash metal exists. Ask Metallica! ✤

What We’re (Still) Talking About
What’s In A Name?
We’ve all witnessed the celebrity craze for somewhat odd baby names, from Elon Musk’s unfortunate offspring, X Æ A-Xii, Exa Dark Sideræl, Techno Mechanicus, Strider Sekhar Sirius and Azure Astra Alice (relatively ‘normal’ compared to the others) to actor Jason Lee’s son, Pilot Inspektor and magician Penn Jillette’s daughter, Moxie CrimeFighter.
Even everyday people have started getting in on the act – we personally know of a Toffee (she’s a sweet kid)
and Myfanwy (OK, that one’s traditional Welsh but can you imagine the teasing?).
In a bid to weed out the trend, the Hungarian Government has come up with a list of ‘approved’ baby names – a 36-page document that features 2,691 options for girls and 2,012 for boys. However, the choices have come in for some flack since, despite the reasoning that names reflect national cultural identity, the list still includes the likes of Legolas – an elf from The Lord of the Rings !
Only In California
Meanwhile in San Francisco, Taylor A Humphrey charges up to USD30,000 for her services as a professional baby naming consultant!
Apparently, the VIP package can include options such as a baby-name branding campaign (we had to look it up, it means creating a cohesive identity profile for the family to stick to), a genealogical deep dive to seek out historic family monikers and even think tank-style meetings to come up with options.
It’s reported that, with the all-
encompassing rise of the Internet, the decision on what to call your newborn has become a fraught subject – just ask TikTok ‘influencers’ Cory and Lea who’ve been widely ridiculed for naming their newborn son Adventure.
Thirty years ago, parents just picked a name they liked and that was that but now everyone wants something that’s ‘different’ and ‘trendy’. Seemingly without thought for the poor kid, named Onion or whatever, who’ll be hiding in the school playground. Ms Humphrey might just be on to something.
Fat Fantastic
We’ve previously reported on Fat Bear Week, the annual event held in autumn by the Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska in which netizens are invited to vote for the bear who’s most successfully piled on the pounds prior to their long winter hibernation.
It’s about promoting bear conservation, cultivating an interest in wildlife and encouraging positive human-nature interactions. And frankly, once you start looking at the social media posts, it’s strangely
addictive – this year’s competition attracted 1.5 million votes.
In case you’re interested, a male bear called Chunk was the 2025 winner, with a massive 96,362 votes!
And, not to be outdone, Texas has now got in on the act but, somewhat lacking in bears, Texas Parks and Wildlife came up with Fat Squirrel Week, which was won by Chunkosaurus Rex, who faced off in the final against fellow chubster Chunk Norris.
It seems fat is officially fabulous. Someone pass the cake.
