A story-led musical experience takes centre stage at The Quarry with SENSES: Laila, an ongoing live production running until February 10. Told through live vocals, theatrical performance and immersive staging, the show takes audiences on a journey through a thousand lives, from souqs to mountains high, where only true love survives.

Designed as an intimate dinner-show concept, the experience blends music, visual storytelling and expressive movement to bring Laila’s story to life. Each performance is paired with a curated four-course menu, offering entertainment in an intimate, cinematic setting.

BIG NAMES AND LIVE SHOWS AT AL DANA Beyon Al Dana Amphitheatre is shaping up for a busy season, with a lineup that spans legendary Gulf and international stars, offering something for every kind of music fan.

Bahrain’s live events calendar is starting the year on a strong note, with a packed lineup of concerts at Beyon Al Dana Amphitheatre. From regional favourites and global rock icons to a classical spectacle, the months ahead are shaping up to be a busy period for open-air entertainment.

The year kicks off on January 9 with Jalsat, bringing together three renowned voices from the Gulf music scene. Saudi icon Abadi Al Johar leads the lineup, known for a career spanning more than four decades and a catalogue that has shaped modern Arabic music. ICONIC MUSICAL WICKED LANDS IN BAHRAIN From Oz to Manama… WICKED brings big Broadway energy to the island this month, with the story of Oz’s most famous witches, for a short, highly anticipated season.

One of the world’s most recognisable stage productions is heading to Bahrain this month, with WICKED set to take over the Bahrain National Theatre in a limited run, from January 13 to 17.

SPOTLIGHT ON IRAQI ART A new exhibition by Ola Saad Znad opens this month at Al Riwaq Art Space, along with an open call for artists to apply for its upcoming residency programme.

Al Riwaq Art Space opens its 2026 programme with A Homeland Adrift Upon the Waters, an exhibition by Iraqi-born artist Ola Saad Znad, running from January 20 to March 26. The exhibition reflects on ideas of belonging, exploring what it means to carry a sense of home when it is no longer anchored to a fixed geography.

Ola left Iraq at the age of eight and grew up in Bahrain. Suspended between two worlds created a ‘gentle fracture’ of being shaped by one home while connected to another. This in-between state sits at the heart of this work, offering a unique perspective on identity, memory and how home is imagined and created.

Central to the exhibition is the Mudhif, the traditional reed architecture of the Iraqi marshes. The Mudhif represents an alternative definition of home for Ola – one constructed from land and memory. Visitors are invited to observe the careful process of its creation, where tying and weaving reeds become acts of reconnection with heritage.

Alongside the exhibition, Al Riwaq is running Application 006, its upcoming Artist Residency Programme. A 12-week intensive course focussed on art making, research and production, the programme offers individual studio space, mentorship, workshops and cultural visits. The ongoing open call runs until January 10, with the residency held from January 21 to April 13, followed by an exhibition taking place from May 12 to July 2.✤

BALTI LIVE IN BAHRAIN! The Kingdom will welcome Tunisian rap star, Balti, for his first-ever live performance on the island this month at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. Music fans have something different to look forward to this month, as Tunisian rap sensation Balti makes his Bahrain debut.

The one-night concert takes place on January 16 at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa, running from 9pm to 2am inside the Al Nakheel Ballroom.

One of the leading voices in Tunisian hip-hop, Balti shot to fame in 2017 with the hit single Ya Lili. The rapper, singer and producer blends a singsong hip-hop style with incisive lyrics on social issues. His arrival brings a fresh sound to the local scene and marks a first for the Kingdom.

The evening will include a lineup of additional entertainment, including Robert & The Band, belly dancer performances, the lively SofiSoul Band and the high-energy beats of DJ Big Fady.

In a region where expectations are high and everyday usability matters, this SUV feels less like a trend-chaser and more like a considered answer to daily life – one that understands how journeys can still take longer than expected, even on an island.

Form with Function On the outside, the Palisade strikes a commanding figure. The bold front end features distinctive vertical LED daytime running lights paired with a wide grille that gives the SUV serious road presence. It looks confident without being aggressive – the automotive equivalent of someone who doesn’t need to raise their voice to be heard.

From the side, its proportions work in its favour. A longer wheelbase and overall length translate into a premium silhouette, while large alloy wheels fill the arches convincingly.

This is a space designed for long journeys – and for passengers who expect to arrive feeling relaxed without having been reintroduced to their knees.

Eight-passenger seating is standard and access to all three rows is easy, with thoughtful layout choices that make moving around the cabin straightforward. The centre console feels solid and well designed, offering useful storage and a sense that everything has been placed where it belongs. There’s a reassuring feeling that the designers didn’t just sketch this interior – they lived with it.

Smart Where It Matters Technology is one of the Palisade’s strongest cards, and it plays it confidently. A panoramic digital display integrates the instrument cluster and infotainment system, presenting information clearly and without unnecessary drama. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard – a detail that keeps everyday connectivity simple.

Connected services allowed us to remotely start the engine, adjust the cabin climate and check vehicle status via smartphone, all of which slotted easily into daily use during our time with the car. Voice recognition added another layer of ease, handling navigation and climate commands naturally, without the need to shout at the dashboard.

Smooth by Nature Under the bonnet, the Palisade is powered by a 2.5L Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection (T-GDI) four-cylinder (V4) engine producing up to 281ps and 43.0kgf.m of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. On the road, we found it delivered power smoothly and predictably, with linear acceleration that suited the vehicle’s size and purpose.

The drive itself felt calm and composed. Noise insulation proved effective, keeping the cabin impressively quiet even at highway speeds. Whether navigating city traffic or settling into a steady cruise, the Palisade remained stable, refined and confidenceinspiring – exactly what we look for in a large family vehicle that may also double as a weekend escape machine.

Built-In Confidence Safety is clearly a priority here and, throughout our drive, the Palisade’s driver assistance systems worked quietly and effectively in the background. Features such as forward collision avoidance, blind-spot monitoring, lane following assistance, rear cross-traffic alerts and smart cruise control operated smoothly, supporting the drive without becoming intrusive.

Rodrigo Carvalho

With more than 23 years of international hospitality experience, the General Manager of Brasero Atlántico Bahrain reflects on his leadership approach, the thinking behind the restaurant’s concept and building a strong team in a competitive dining scene.

You’ve worked across several regions and concepts over more than two decades. What guiding principles from your early days still influence how you lead today?

It’s all about having a strong foundation. I truly believe a team needs discipline, but at the same time they need to enjoy what they do, work with a sense of urgency and pay attention to detail. All of that together is what creates a successful hospitality operation and allows us to provide the best possible service to our guests. One thing I always repeat to my team is that people 62

are more important than money. Your network and the people you know in life matter a lot. We only get one chance to make a good first impression, so we cannot miss it at all. I once read a phrase: ‘Calm in chaos’. That, for me, defines a true hospitality leader. The restaurant can be on fire but I need to keep calm to find the right solution and get things sorted. And when it comes to service and hospitality, I’m full speed. A strong sense of urgency always comes first, and I’ll be the fastest one to make sure things get done.

Brasero Atlántico isn’t a traditional Argentine steakhouse in the classic sense. How would you describe the concept in Bahrain?

Our food and drinks are inspired by the immigration to Argentina.

When immigrants arrived from Europe, they brought their recipes, spices and culinary traditions. All of that mixed with the local culture, which is why Argentine cuisine today has strong Italian, Spanish, German and Portuguese influences. You’ll find great pastas, premium steaks and also dishes like paella. Bahrain is a very unique place, with a strong Western influence, so we need to be creative. Our chef is constantly updating the menu and coming up with new dishes, and our cocktail list also changes often to keep things fresh.

You’ve managed everything from standalone restaurants to luxury dining brands. How do you balance authenticity with creativity for the local taste?

Brasero Atlántico has been open for almost seven months, and I can honestly say we are now living the best moment of the restaurant. Our food caters to the Bahraini taste. The menu is updated often, with new and seasonal dishes that bring more variety, including more salads and, of course, our premium Argentine steaks. Listening to our guests is crucial to the success of the business. On the drinks side, we’ve introduced new

signature cocktails and expanded the options. When it comes to grape, we have the largest Argentine selection in Bahrain, including premium vintages straight from Mendoza that you won’t find anywhere else. Music is also a big part of the experience.

When we opened, we were the only place in the country with a DJ playing vinyl, and it’s been a huge success.

What has surprised you the most about living and working in Bahrain so far?

The friendliness and hospitality of the people is unbelievable. I honestly think I’ve never been treated so well anywhere else. I come from fast-paced environments like São Paulo and Dubai, and Bahrain has brought me a sense of peace I never had before. You can truly have a work-life balance here, so it's just the perfect place to be.

What’s something your team would be surprised to learn about you outside the restaurant setting?

I think my team already knows most of it. I’m very focussed at this time in my life on longevity and having a healthy lifestyle. I don’t smoke or drink, I exercise daily and follow a healthy diet. They even kind of make fun of me for how many protein shakes I have or if I’ve done my sports routine that day. So yes, I'm a very, very healthy person. ✤ fact magazine

You’ve worked in kitchens for nearly two decades. What early experiences had the biggest influence on the chef you are today?

The earliest influence was learning discipline before creativity.

In my first kitchens, I was taught to respect ingredients, timing and the people around me long before I was encouraged to express myself. Over time, travelling and working across different cultures shaped me deeply, and I learnt that food is never just about technique – it’s about memory, place and emotion. That understanding still guides how I cook today.

Arabic and Oriental flavours are at the heart of your cooking. How do you keep them feeling fresh and relevant at The Orangery?

For me, relevance comes from restraint. These flavours are already rich and expressive, so I believe in keeping dishes simple.

At The Orangery, we focus on clarity – allowing each ingredient and spice to speak for itself, while presenting it in a way that feels light and contemporary. We also respond to the seasons and how people want to eat now: more mindful, more balanced.

What dish do you cook most often for friends or family at home and what makes it special?

There’s no one specific dish but it’s usually something simple and comforting – a slow-cooked dish that brings everyone to the table without needing to explain it. I tend to cook dishes inspired by my roots but adapted to whoever I’m cooking for. What makes it special isn’t the recipe; it’s the time spent together. Cooking at home reminds me why I became a chef in the first place – to nourish people, not impress them.

Which signature dish at The Orangery best reflects your personality as a chef and why?

Our Saffron French Toast has become one of our long-standing signature dishes, with guests even travelling from Saudi Arabia specifically for it. At first glance, it appears understated, but as you eat, it slowly reveals layers of flavour. This sense of balance reflects how I approach cooking – calm, thoughtful and intentional.

I’m drawn to dishes that don’t seek attention immediately; I prefer ones that invite you in quietly and stay with you. That philosophy is very much at the heart of The Orangery. ✤ fact magazine

I

love the trip to Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa, heading down the long, empty road towards the citadel-like building always gives me a feeling of being on holiday. And, entering Yamaz certainly builds on that vibe. The interiors in pale blue and white with terracotta tiled floors whisk you straight to the Mediterranean.

Table settings with earthenware pots bearing clashing pink bougainvillea, bright blue glassware, pretty patterned plates and hanging lamps that resemble old-style wicker fishermen’s pots call to mind the Greek islands, while close to the ceiling an industrial-style installation that resembles the tentacle of a giant squid adds a touch of interest and a burst of fun.

But, make no mistake, here, the view is the real star. Glass walls on all sides reveal a vista of endless sea and sky, the sun bouncing off the small waves as seabirds put on a show. Visit at nighttime and gentle lanterns add to the ambience and, I have to admit, I have loved this place in its many guises since it opened in 2011.

And now, with a new man at the helm in the shape of GreekCypriot Chef Marios Philippou, I was eager to see how things are shaping up.

We started with three salads, the first of which, Xtenia with cucumber soup and scallop tartare, is one of the chef’s signature dishes, and it’s easy to see why. Served on a bed of ice, with dry ice billowing smoke for added drama, the sweetness and delicate texture of the raw scallop was perfectly balanced by the bright, crisp cucumber. The lightly, creamy soup rounded out the whole, with a sprinkling of microgreens and citrus slices making for a wonderfully refreshing, yet subtle bite.

Next came a bowl bursting with the flavours of Heirloom tomatoes, their skins bright red and deep purple imparting a visual treat to complement the rich, slightly sweet Manouri cheese mousse. A hint of grape syrup added deeper sweetness and a dusting of pinenuts brought crunch and earthy flavour.

The last of the cold starters was easily my favourite – the traditional Greek mezze or Alifes Platter. If, like me, you’re a fan of dips, then this is the one for you.

Velvety Tzatziki – creamy yoghurt with cucumber, garlic and dill – brought a burst of Mediterranean sunshine, familiar and utterly delicious. The Taramosalata, a classic fish paté, was literally flavours of the sea in a bowl, while Melinzanosalata is one I could go back for again and again since I just adore the sweet, charred flavour of perfectly grilled eggplant. Silken hummus and a selection of plump olives also featured alongside a new one for me, which became an immediate favourite, Tirokafteri. This spicy feta cream took on a pink hue from roasted red bell peppers with a kick of chilli paste bringing a lingering heat.

For hot appetisers, we started with Lamb Baklava – soft, juicy, slow-roasted meat in a crispy phyllo pastry shell with a light piping of pinkly pretty sumac yoghurt sauce to bring out the sweetness of the meat. This came as a happy surprise as I was expecting kofta meat, of which I am not a huge fan, so to encounter rich, earthy lamb, sinewy and tender and literally dissolving on the tongue, brought a real smile to my face.

Next came Feta Filo – fried barrel-aged feta cheese wrapped in phyllo pastry. I have to be honest and say this is not the 68

most attractive looking dish on the menu but looks can surely be deceiving. The pastry was super crispy and made a satisfying crunch as we cracked through to the warm gooey cheese inside. The saltiness of the feta was perfectly offset by the topping of sweet tomato and chilli jam. The challenge of combining all the elements in one forkful was certainly worth the effort for that unique sensation of crisp, smooth and sweet in one unforgettable mouthful.

And, of course, you can’t go Greek without calamari. Small and sweet with not a hint of rubberiness, fried in an airy, light batter, so dry that it was still tasty and crunchy when we went back even after it had cooled.

Then came the mains. First up a trio of souvlaki skewers and it was gratifying to hear my Bahraini dining companion exclaim that not all grills are created equal!

Succulent pink chunks of steak were cooked just the right side of chewy for a flavourful bite, the marinade of garlic with oregano teasing out the delicate flavours of the beef. The lamb kofta was equally tasty and just fatty enough for the meat to boast that delicious telltale succulence without being greasy, the combination of herbs, onions and spices cutting through to release the sweetness of the lamb. But, for me, the star of the show was the chicken, perfectly grilled with a light char enhanced with hints of garlic, parsley, rosemary and citrus for a delightful flavour and texture combination.

The surprise standout of the day was the Vegetarian Moussaka, which was an unexpected hit with all of us confirmed carnivores.

The thin slices of potato rendered the dish a light and savoury triumph, crunchy green courgettes bringing sweetness, eggplant adding rich earthy flavour and perfectly matching the creamy, cheesy sauce that bubbled in browned goodness atop the dish. I would definitely order this again in a heartbeat.

Then it was time for dessert and, of course, we were treated to the Mykonos Karavi – a perfectly egg-shaped chocolate shell encasing all manner of sweet goodness from light, fluffy sponge to chocolate fondant, hazelnut praline, chocolate Chantilly and brownie cubes. My dining companion smashed the shell with a satisfying crack and the table fell silent as we tucked in making sure to fill our spoons with a little bit of each filling for an amazingly decadent mouthful. By contrast, the second signature dessert – a new addition to the menu – the Glykoterole was described by Chef Marios as a Greek take on the traditional profiterole. More refined and simpler, the paper-light choux pastry was stuffed with pistachio praline and mastiha Chantilly bringing an understated elegance to conclude our Greek feast.

As the afternoon drew to a close, we ordered coffees in anticipation of the always gorgeous Zallaq sunset. It didn’t disappoint and nor did Yamaz. From the attentive service to the excellent fare, I’ve already booked a return visit to sample more of Chef Marios’ innovations. ✤

ahrain is a melting pot of global cuisines and, when it comes to Far Eastern food, the Kingdom has some excellent choices. However, only a handful have stood the test of time and remained firm favourites, one of which is Monsoon, tucked away in Adliya. It has certainly been one of my go-to spots since I’ve been on the island.

With a rich culinary history, Monsoon is one of Al Ghalia group’s original brands and has been wooing patrons for almost 25 years – no mean feat, considering the island’s ever-evolving foodie scene. So, a dinner invite with colleagues was a welcome surprise, especially as it had been a while since my last visit.

Paying tribute to Balinese palaces and Oriental temples, Monsoon’s grand façade of thick wooden doors and stone elephant statues impresses even before stepping inside. The predominantly wooden interior is equally striking, with soaring ceilings, monumental pillars and heavy-set, palatial furniture. The main restaurant sits on a raised platform, surrounded by a shallow waterway, with lantern-lit pathways leading to a sushi bar, lowseating private pavilions and a Tatami room for larger parties.

The Oriental theme continues outdoors, ideal for this time of year, where a veranda overlooks a gorgeous pond, water feature and a quaint wooden bridge leading to an intimate one-table setting. From the stone Buddha figurine to the greenery and dim chandelier lighting, the zen-like atmosphere is reminiscent of a traditional pagoda.

Embracing these familiar surroundings, I couldn’t help but notice the jazzy lounge music, curated for Monsoon by DJ Enzo. The easy72

listening, chilled vibe complements the tranquil ambience perfectly.

As we took our seats, Restaurant Manager Mart Andrew Paa took us through the diverse menu of authentic Far Eastern cuisine, spanning Japanese and Thai favourites. Mart and our lovely server, Amir, looked after us throughout the meal.

We began with the familiar prawn crackers and sweet chilli sauce while we awaited the appetisers. Drinks arrived soon after. The colourful Niji Flower, made with butterfly pea tea, lemongrass and passion fruit, was light and refreshing. The delicious Smoked Peach Mango Tea came in a wooden box, with a gentle apple wood smokiness in each sip. A Thai Mojito, fragrant with lime and lemongrass, rounded out the selection and set the tone for the meal ahead.

First up were the Poh Pia Tod, crisp spring rolls filled with vegetables and glass noodles. Light and crunchy without being greasy, they disappeared quickly, helped along by the sweet chilli dip.

The Bang Bang Cauliflower followed, offering a veggie twist on a street-food favourite. Coated in rice cracker crumbs with furikake, garlic, chilli and shallot flakes, the cauliflower florets were fluffy and crisp. The sesame sriracha sauce added depth and just enough heat. It was bang on (pun intended).

Next came the Toong Tong, deep-fried moneybag-shaped morsels filled with marinated shrimp, water chestnut and coriander. Golden and flaky on top, they opened to a soft, tender filling with a bit of bite. Well executed, they were quietly satisfying.

The sushi selection introduced the Japanese side of the menu.

The Blowtorch roll combined tuna, salmon and hamachi with pickled radish, torched crab and tobiko (flying fish roe) cream,

finished with teriyaki sauce and crushed pistachio. Creamy and slightly sweet, it was a good mix of salty and sweet. Meanwhile, the Nela Kani presented a pleasant twist on the classic prawn tempura, topped with crabstick salad and complemented by a subtle hit of homemade chilli paste.

From there, we moved on to soups and salads. As someone who never skips tom yum, I was particularly keen to sample Monsoon’s Tom Yam Creamy. With a choice of protein, we opted for the prawn and veggie versions. Fragrant with lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaf, the broths were gently warming and made for a comforting, hearty dish, definitely one to return to on a rainy day.

The Som Tam was prepared tableside by Amir, mixed in a small clay pot before being served. Crisp shredded papaya, carrots, long beans and crushed peanuts were brought together wonderfully with a lime soy dressing that lent just the right amount of tanginess. This is a staple every time I come to Monsoon, and this visit confirmed why it remains my favourite.

Mains followed steadily, beginning with the Pla Makram. The whole sea bass arrived beautifully crisp on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside, glazed with tamarind soy and finished with crispy shallots, coriander and chilli. The Braised Short Ribs were an absolute hit at the table. The aromatic Angus beef was exceptionally tender, elevated by a creamy truffle dashi that added earthy notes without overshadowing the meat. Grilled shiitake mushrooms added a welcome contrast in texture. As my dining companion commented, it needed no sides to shine.

Another highlight was the Num Prik Pao Talay. We opted for the seafood version, featuring prawns and squid in a roasted chilli sauce with cashews and vegetables. With the consistency of a luscious bisque and ideal spooned over rice, it was simple, fun and deeply satisfying, unanimously declared a standout.

The Gaeng Kiew Waan Gai brought serious spice! A signature Thai green curry, the first bite delivered intense heat, but once past that initial kick, the curry revealed a nutty, earthy flavour, with tender slivers of chicken. I opted for the vegetable yellow curry, which was milder, creamy and equally enjoyable alongside steamed jasmine rice. We also shared Pad Thai Pak, a delicious mix of glassy, wok-fried flat rice noodles, tofu, bean sprouts and egg. The tamarind and lime gave it a gentle tartness and the peanuts the perfect crunch and texture.

Dessert arrived as a royal platter, Kha Nom Kong Wan, presented magnificently on ice with a touch of dry ice theatre. We tucked into mango sticky rice, mango cheesecake, mixed berries and a selection of ice creams, but we unanimously agreed the star had to be the chocolate lava, which three pairs of hands devoured in seconds!

Returning to Monsoon felt like catching up with an old friend you haven’t seen in a while – easy, familiar and genuinely enjoyable.

T

here are certain restaurants you suggest when no one in the group can agree on what they want to eat. Someone wants steak, someone wants chicken, someone’s in the mood for seafood, and at least one person insists they’re ‘not that hungry’ (they always are). The Butcher Shop & Grill is one of those places where everyone finds something they’re happy with, without it feeling like a compromise.

Set slightly away from the constant buzz of the food court at City Centre Bahrain, the restaurant strikes a careful balance between open and cosy. The layout feels airy and uncluttered, yet the tufted seating and thoughtful spacing create an intimate dining atmosphere, ideal for lingering conversations and unhurried meals. Marbled walls and tabletops lend a clean, modern aesthetic, while metallic accents add warmth. Then there’s the giant green cow that injects colour and personality into the space and immediately sets a lighter, more relaxed tone. It’s a small detail but one that makes the interior feel less formal and far more inviting.

Having previously dined at the Marassi Galleria outlet, my expectations were already set fairly high. The meal began with a warm bread basket, quickly followed by a series of salads that proved surprisingly memorable. The Fantasy salad combined mesclun greens with walnuts, fresh blackberries, strawberries and goat’s cheese, finished with a citrus dressing. Fruit isn’t usually what I reach for in a salad, but this combination surprised me.

The berries added a sharpness that balanced the creaminess of the goat’s cheese, while the dressing kept everything light and refreshing. The Exotic salad followed, and it really earnt its name.

Made with black quinoa, baby spinach, mango, avocado, dried cranberry, dried fig and grapefruit, with a passionfruit dressing, it was colourful, textured and full of flavour. Every bite was slightly different, which is what kept it rather interesting.

The starters, however, were where the table really came alive.

The Chicken Coxinha was an instant favourite. A deep-fried croquette filled with shredded chicken, cream cheese and spring onion, it had a crisp, golden exterior and a soft, gooey centre. It’s rich, comforting and dangerously easy to keep eating, even when you know mains are still to come. Equally hard to resist were the South African Truffle Mushroom Tenderloin Strips. Served in a hot skillet with a creamy truffle and mushroom sauce, the meat was genuinely succulent. Paired with toasted bread, it was indulgent, full of umami and, honestly, one of those dishes that makes sharing feel like a chore. The sauce alone was reason enough to go back in for more.

With appetites thoroughly whetted, the mains followed. The Chicken Espetada came skewered upside down over a bed of fragrant saffron rice. The chicken was well-seasoned, lightly spiced and grilled just right – juicy, flavourful and satisfying without being heavy.

From the seafood options, the Mussel Pot was a clear favourite at the table. Cooked in a creamy sauce with subtle notes of onion and parsley, the mussels were tender and balanced, accompanied by crisp garlic bread that disappeared almost as quickly as the dish itself.

which are displayed prominently, but the menu also includes Australian and Wagyu options. From the signature selections, the Tenderloin Medallions with bacon sauce leaned into classic steakhouse comfort, with thinly sliced tenderloin, vegetables on the side and a rich sauce. The African Suya Rib-eye, however, was the standout for me. I’m someone who genuinely enjoys a bit of fat on my steak, and this cut delivers.

Cooked medium rare, the meat was tender yet firm, full of flavour and paired with a rocca mix and some seriously good potato cubes – browned, spiced and very moreish. Everything came together with an African peanut sauce, which added depth without overpowering the steak itself.

We also tried the Surf & Turf from the signature section: medium-rare sirloin paired with prawns and sweetcorn ribs, finished with a creamy, slightly tangy horseradish yoghurt sauce. Rich but balanced, it works especially well if you’re torn between steak and seafood.

Then there was the All In Burger, easily the most dramatic dish on the table. A beef patty topped with slow-cooked ribs, pickled cabbage, sautéed mushrooms, cheese and jalapeños, finished with a generous stack of onion rings and served with Cajun-style house chips. Big, messy and unapologetic, but surprisingly not overwhelming, it held together better than expected.

Despite the generous portions, dessert felt non-negotiable. The cheesecake was classic and comforting, topped with strawberry syrup and fresh strawberries. Smooth, creamy and exactly what it should be. The Smores Skillet went all out. Built on a chocolate cake base and layered with chocolate, marshmallows, cookie

crumbs and ice cream, it was rich, indulgent and definitely one to share, although not everyone was willing.

The Butcher Shop & Grill is the kind of restaurant you return to when you want something familiar, filling and satisfying without overthinking it. Whether you’re there for the steaks, the starters or simply because everyone at the table wants something different, it delivers where it counts. Good food, generous portions and a setting that makes you want to stay just a little longer. ✤

Afternoons might be spent attending spiritual talks, visiting nearby temples or strolling along the riverbanks near Lakshman Jhula bridge, watching the orange-robed sadhus go about their day. At dusk, don’t miss the mesmerising Ganga Aarti fire ceremony, where lamps float downstream like stars.

For the full experience, traditional ashrams like Yoga Niketan or Parmarth Niketan offer everything from dropin classes to multi-week programmes rooted in classical yoga, philosophy and breathwork. collaboration between Men's Creative Directors Pharrell Williams and Nigo, it's an artistic manifestation of a friendship for life; a symbiosis between an archivist and a point of reference – Nigo, whose vast archives of 20th century workwear inform the collection, and the stylistic expression of Pharrell Williams as a representation of the duo's shared history in streetwear.

Silhouettes imbued with memories of the early 2000s are cut in the spirit of the future. Framed by the dandy elegance for which the brand is known, the collection stages an exchange of codes between the ideas of streetwear and dandyism.

The metamorphosis creates expressions composed from suiting, workwear and sportswear, cross-pollinated in form and fabrication. Workwear silhouettes – engineers, chefs, gardeners, et.al. – are formalised or amplified in material value.

Taking reference from streetwear, a sculpted bomber jacket is ornamented with a heroic yellow flower and varsity jackets constructed in the house leathers are adorned with insignia.

The traditional lines of tailoring are casualised in cut or volume; some cropped and re-imagined in leather; some infused with Japanese construction. An air of rockabilly and mod pays tribute to subcultures key to the archives and artistic expressions of the co-directors.

A Cherry Blossom Damoflage is imbued with bubbly yarn, evoking cherry pollen.

The traditional colours of wardrobe genres – from the heritage shades of classic menswear to the canvas and denim nuances of workwear and the leather dyes of rockabilly – are brightened by the cherry blossom pink of Japanese sakura. Natural patterns abound in varieties of camouflage. A streetwear trope, it's expressed in a leafy camo printed on ripstop and overembroidered with beads and sequins and a camo tapestry jacquard. The leopard print of rockabilly merges with camo on ripstop canvas and poplin and appears hand-beaded on leather and in chainstitch on tailoring. Leopard print further dots a pixelated pattern as embroidery on tailoring and as fil coupé in shirts.

The women's collection is equally intriguing: sometimes androgenous, sometimes ultra-feminine. Silhouettes range from boxy ‘90s-esque shoulders to loose, flowing and, at times, extreme. The palette is mostly neutrals with the occasional bright flashes of brilliance expressed in flames licking across the fabric of a pants suit or a flash of bright crimson enlivening a grey skirt, adding both interest and humour.

Feathers and frills abound alongside leather, lace and sharp tailoring for a collection that retraces Louis Vuitton’s travel heritage. Nicolas Ghesquière, Artistic Director of Women’s Collections, merges past and present with his audacious signature aesthetic. HEALING THE WIM HOF WAY A wellness instructor by day and a musician by night, Faisal Amin is a man of many talents. Apple Sharma chats with him about his personal journey in becoming the only Wim Hof Method instructor in Bahrain, the benefits of the practice and how to embrace it in daily life.

fact: How did you first discover the Wim Hof Method, and what inspired you to become a certified instructor?

FA: The seed was planted a long time ago when a doctor friend of mine was going through Wim’s [Dutch extreme athlete, Wim Hof, who developed the method] research and techniques, trying it out and telling me about it. I had been intrigued by the man and his energy, his philosophy and accomplishments. But it wasn’t until the Covid era when I saw Wim in an Instagram live session and followed along. I decided to do the breathing techniques consistently, started attempting slightly cooler showers and then a year later did my first ice plunge at home. After about a year and a half of practising the method full-on, I decided I wanted to invest time in learning more and being around people who practice the method and that was the only reason I decided to become an instructor. fact: For someone hearing about Wim Hof for the first time, how would you explain it in simple terms?

FA: The Wim Hof method is a way to reawaken our innate intelligence and connect body and mind mechanisms using simple tools given to us by nature. The three pillars are the breath, the cold and the mindset. It’s a scientifically proven way to keep the body and mind in its optimal natural state.

Wim Hof, also known as the Iceman, has used his time in nature to learn and experiment with his own body, the breath, the cold.

He has endured the most amazing physical challenges and broken multiple world records. He has been submerged in ice for almost two hours, has the longest swim under ice, run half a marathon in the ice barefoot and a full marathon in the desert in Namibia without hydration. He also used the practices to regain physical health, composure and mental wellbeing through severe personal challenges.

What launched everything for him was the scientific validation through studies done in Radboud University Medical Center, published in 2014, which showed that Wim and others who trained with him were able to show influence and control over their autonomic nervous system like never observed before. fact magazine

fact: What benefits have you personally noticed since making it part of your routine?

FA: I have had major improvements with chronic sinusitis and have been healed of a minor autoimmune skin condition that was bothering my leg for over two years, without any other lifestyle change. I rarely get sick anymore, and if I do the symptoms are nothing like what they used to be and I recover faster. I have much more energy throughout the day, have very minimal stress (which is also supported by other habits and a general mindset switch in life), I have much more of a ‘bring it on’ attitude, I recover faster after my Muay Thai workouts, the list goes on and on. fact: Cold exposure can sound intimidating. What advice would you give to beginners who are just starting out?

FA: You can always start with gradually bringing the temperature down in your showers. There is a cold shower challenge on the app, which you can also find online, which systematically increases the threshold. I’d say the best way is to come to the workshops, learn about the science and methodology, have a group breathing session and let the instructor guide you through your first ice bath. I think we’re close to having had about 200 people in Bahrain do it for the first time in their lives, and it seems like every single one of them is now addicted to the cold! fact: How can the method realistically fit into everyday life, especially for people with busy schedules?

FA: The simplicity of the method is what makes it so beautiful.

Everyone can manage making time for a few rounds of breathing and turning the shower cold. (There are solutions for summer months too, using trays designed to hold ice right 98

under the shower head). The Wim Hof Method app makes it all very easy as well. fact: For those who want to try the Wim Hof Method in Bahrain, how can they get involved and do you have any upcoming sessions planned?

FA: I am always running workshops, group courses (which go a little bit deeper and help us stay consistent as a group in spans of five or 10 weeks). From January 16 to 17, we have an overnight camp at Learn To Grow farm in Janabiya, which includes the Wim Hof Method – a great way to connect with nature and also learn the method. These workshops are for beginners and practitioners alike, so anyone is welcome. You can find details on my website or follow me on Instagram. fact: You’re also involved in Muay Thai and play in a band, The Relocators. For a quick reset, what do you reach for first – a guitar, an ice bath or a kick-boxing session?

FA: I can kickbox in an ice bath while playing the guitar… haha. For a reset, it’s always going to be the breath and the cold. fact: If you had to choose a soundtrack for an ice bath, what would it be and why?

Seemingly miracle weight-loss drugs have been making headlines rather a lot over the last few years. It’s almost impossible to go online without seeing the stories of formerly chubby celebrities who’ve undergone hefty (pun totally intended) transformations through the use of injectables such as Ozempic and Mounjaro.

There are even a few on our team who’ve given the shots a go and we certainly aren’t against the idea of those who really struggle getting a bit of help. But a recent headline gave us cause for concern.

OK, we regularly poke fun at fashion brands coming up with ridiculous takes on everyday items – Balencia/IKEA tote anyone? But we honestly didn’t expect Hermès to get in on the act.

The super-luxe brand is particularly known for handbags that command million-dollar price tags (yes, we know, don’t get us started!), so we were kind of surprised to find it had seemingly branched out into medical supplies… with the release of Hermès band aids.

Released via the Petit h line, the little lambskin patches are shaped like sticking plasters but, unsurprisingly, all is

Lions in Saudi – and we don’t mean the ones some ‘people’ keep as pets – that’s definitely a story that bears closer inspection. Arabian Gulf Business Insight reports plans from the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve to reintroduce Asiatic lions to the 24,500sq/km protected space.

Hunted to extinction in the Kingdom more than 100 years ago, cave drawings suggest big cats previously roamed freely on the land for around 10,000 years. Now the reserve plans to bring them back alongside leopards, which are already the subject of a breeding programme underway in Taif.

company OKAVA Pharmaceuticals has announced that it is trialling a similar drug for cats! Apparently more than half of the world’s pet felines are overweight with conditions such as heart troubles, arthritis and diabetes on the increase.

However, since experts agree that the cat obesity epidemic is mostly caused by the common practice of free feeding, where pets have unlimited access to scoff as much as they want, it would probably be kinder, and healthier, to just lock up the kitty kibble outside of mealtimes.

A touch of class at a much more affordable price. Or you could up the ante by sticking one on your Birkin – Jane Birkin, the inspiration for the original It Bag, would either be spinning in her grave or laughing her head off.

Apparently, there are only around 900 Asiatic lions left in the wild in India’s Gir National Park but conservation efforts there have shown the species is adapting well and numbers are on the increase. So, hopes are high for the Saudi project.

However, there could be a fly in the ointment. Reserve CEO Andrew Zaloumis says the plans are currently at the consultation stage and he is expecting potential pushback because apparently ‘people are scared of lions’.

Judging by what humans did to them last time they made an appearance, perhaps it should be the other way around!
