Welcoming The Holy Month

"There is a hidden sweetness in the stomach’s emptiness." – Rumi

There is so much happening this month, I hardly know where to start. But, of course, Ramadan is the obvious place.

While some are busy making the most of the days before the start of abstinence, others are busy in preparation for it – the most common thread being food! And our pages are full of it, from mouth-watering reviews to Iftar and Suhour feasts, as well as a spotlight on traditional local eats. Are you hungry for more?

This is just a taste of what we’re featuring this month. Our cover story captures Ramadan in all its glory, including activities and traditions aplenty, how to give back and tips on staying healthy while fasting.

In keeping with the modest theme, our fashion pages showcase the latest collection from QASIMI, the London-based label with Middle Eastern heritage, and travel takes us on a journey of discovery to the home of Islam – Saudi Arabia.

For this month’s test drive, we got behind the wheel of the new Mitsubishi Montero Sport GLS and we’ve got loads of motoring news too.

As always, there’s info on upcoming happenings in our Listen Up section, I’m particularly excited about all the forthcoming shows from The Doha Players. I might see you there, if you decide to audition.

And there’s news from the worlds of tech, fashion, entertainment and more. Happy reading and Ramadan Kareem to all.

IT’S SHOWTIME!

Lovers of musical theatre are in for a treat as students and staff of Education City’s Pre-University Education (PUE) Theatre take to the stage in a production focussing on Arabic music.

Taking place from March 6 to 8, this year’s edition of SHOWTIME! will feature medleys from beloved childhood movies and iconic musicals from both the West End and Broadway. Performances in Arabic – guided by Dana Al Meer – and English will be delivered by native and non-native speakers.

Chris Piper, Producer and Creative Director, said: “Participating in the performing arts is crucial for a child's growth and school journey. It instills discipline and boosts confidence, pushing them to exceed their expectations.”

Reflecting on the beginnings of SHOWTIME! in 2019, Chris shared his initial uncertainty about the programme's reception and his subsequent amazement at the talent and enthusiasm it has garnered. According to him, each year the show has grown in scale and quality, with this year being particularly unique as up to 30% of the songs will be performed in Arabic.

"Integrating Arabic not only enriches the show but also pays homage to the local culture, making it a unique experience in the realm of musical theatre,” said Chris, explaining that the whole cast –comprising different nationalities – will perform the songs in Arabic.

“This year, we’re celebrating family-friendly musicals, making it a fantastic outing for everyone. We’re eager for audiences to experience this unique blend of musical theatre, especially with the addition of Arabic language performances, which makes it even more special for our diverse cast and audience.”

Noura Abdelhadi Al Marri, a nine-year-old student from Qatar Academy Al Wakra, said: “I love being part of SHOWTIME! It’s a lot of fun. I get to do what I love and share my talents with everyone. Last year, I wasn’t sure I could do it, but I did, and it was awesome! And that’s why I’m back again this year.”

Felix Alexander, an 11-year-old student at Qatar Music Academy, spoke about returning this year, saying: “The coolest part is the show itself. When you’re up there on stage and everyone is watching, it’s awesome.

“This year, the show is different – there are new dances, new songs and new costumes. I even got to sing in Arabic, which was totally new for me since I don’t really speak or understand it.

“At the start, it was tough, but I learned so much, like how to be braver. And this has helped me become more confident. I’d like to tell other kids they should also try it. It's more than just being brave; it's fun, keeps you moving and you learn a lot. And yes, it's hard work, but totally worth it.”

SHOWTIME! Is taking place at the PUE Theatre in Qatar Foundation’s Education City. Tickets cost QR150 and are available to purchase from Q Tickets, events.q-tickets.com/qatar/ eventdetails/5933656358/showtime-2024 ✤

SAY HAKUNA MATATA TO THE LION KING

Get ready for a one-of-a-kind experience as the film favourite is brought to life in a thrilling concert performance.

Taking place at the Al Mayassa Theatre, Qatar National Convention Centre, on April 12, the evening will include a screening of the feature length 1994 animated version of Disney’s The Lion King in Arabic with English subtitles, alongside a full orchestra performing iconic tunes from the movie.

Spoiler alert for those who may have missed it the first (or even second or third) time around. The film tells the story of young lion cub Simba and his adventures on the road to becoming The Lion King. When the little lion’s father, the mighty Mufasa, King of the Pride Lands, is killed by his scheming brother Scar in an attempt to snatch the throne, Simba is tricked into believing the death is his fault. After fleeing into exile he grows up with a group of carefree outcasts including his great friends Timon and Pumbaa, a meercat and a warthog, having many scrapes and thrills

along the way. Eventually the young lion learns the truth about his father’s death and returns to his home lands to challenge Scar and take his place in the Circle of Life as the rightful king.

Listen out for unforgettable songs such as Circle of Life and Hakuna Matata , as the concert brings to life the music of Oscar- and GRAMMY- winning stars Elton John, lyricist Tim Rice, and composer Hans Zimmer, plus African vocal and choir arrangements by South African producer and composer Lebo M.

The screening will begin at 6pm and tickets are priced from QR120 to QR425. ✤

THE SPIRIT OF THE HOLY MONTH

Expected to begin around March 10 or 11, Ramadan in the Muslim faith is a time of fasting and reflection. But it is also a time of togetherness and Qatar offers a range of activities throughout the month focussed on community-based entertainment.

Katara Cultural Village

Bordered by a vast beach on one side and the twin Katara Hills on the other, Katara is Doha’s go-to destination for art, culture and cuisine. There is always loads to do there from visiting the stunning mosques to exploring Al Thuraya Planetarium. And during the Holy Month, Katara generally hosts an array of activities such the Ramadan Lantern Festival, competitions for kids and adults, gaming and sports championships and special storytelling. It’s also one of the spots the for canon firing to mark the end of the day’s fast. This year’s programme is still to be released. GO: Visit katara.net for more information.

Lusail Boulevard

This is a venue that’s really come into its own in recent times

hosting numerous events and exhibitions and Ramadan is no exception. Throughout the Holy Month, the boulevard is usually pedestrianised between the Magrib and dawn prayers, offering the perfect opportunity to take a balmy evening walk. Each day before Iftar there’s a car parade which sees motoring enthusiasts showing off their fancy vehicles. Expect tents and Ramadan activities as well as the daily canon firing at sunset. The 2024 programme is still to be confirmed.

GO: Visit lusail.com for more information.

Qatar Foundation

Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development is a state-led non-profit that runs interesting events and initiatives throughout the year. During the Holy Month, it stages a series of Islamic talks alongside various workshops and cultural activations. The much loved Glow in the Dark Run also usually takes place during this period as well as charity initiatives and there are also special activities for the youngsters and food trucks all staged in Oxygen Park. This year’s events are still to be confirmed.

GO: Visit qf.org.qa for more information.

The Pearl

Head to The Pearl for a shopping experience to remember with the Ramadan Bazaar. Presenting brightly coloured stalls and traditional activities, this is the place to stock up on all your Holy Month essentials, from clothing to décor, as you take in the gorgeous views of The Pearl island. It’s also very popular for the traditional Gergaoon (or Garagao) festival in which children dress up in traditional clothes and sing Qatari songs while collecting small gifts and candies. The shopping fest usually runs from after Iftar until late. Details are still to be confirmed.

GO: Visit @thepearlqatar for more information.

Experiencing Traditions

The Ramadan Canon Firing – Some say this tradition started in Egypt, others claim it began in the Ottoman Empire, with the canon's loud voice announcing to all near and far the setting of the sun and time to break the fast. The tradition continues in Qatar with the canon firing broadcast live on Qatar TV. You can experience real thing at locations across the city, including Souq Waqif, Katara, Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab Grand Mosque or Souq Al Wakra. Garangao – Celebrated exclusively in the Gulf, on the 14th day of Ramadan, it celebrates children as they attempt to fast. Youngsters dress up in traditional attire and knock on doors singing songs and dancing to collect Garangao– mixed bags of nuts, sweets, candies and coins. Special Garagao ceremonies are held at events and Iftars across the country.

GIVING BACK

One of the pillars of Islam is charity and there could not be a better time than the Holy Month to consider ways of helping the less fortunate. Throughout Ramadan there are various initiatives you can get involved in; these are some of our local favourites.

Feed A Friend

Active all year round, Feed A Friend’s Ramadan Food Boxes give you the chance to donate a box, priced QR165 from their dedicated supplier, Goodwill. Boxes contain items such as rice, flour, dates, Vimto and sugar and pledgers nominate who they would like them to go to. They are delivered to Feed A Friend for distribution on March 9, or donors can choose to collect them and hand them over themselves.

GO: Visit feedafriend.org/ramadanbox2024 for more information.

Qatar Charity

Each year the country’s own charity carries out initiatives that help millions around the globe, from education to disaster relief. This Ramadan, Qatar Charity offers the chance to provide Iftar to disadvantaged Muslims helping them to break their fast with dignity. Their website explains: “Every moment in Ramadan is significant but the moment of Iftar has a different rewarding feel. Muslims regard Iftar as a gift they receive after a long fasting day gathered

around the Iftar table with those they love most. However, millions of Muslim families out there miss out on this feeling because they are poor, displaced, unsheltered or refugees in countries of asylum and they cannot afford an Iftar meal. This Ramadan we are starting a journey of gifting love to the world. We are reaching out to thousands of vulnerable families who cannot afford a basic meal and bringing them together on an Iftar table.”

You can donate Iftar to a needy person for as little as QR20 and it will surely make someone’s day.

GO: Visit www.qcharity.org for more information.

Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS)

This year’s charity initiative from QRCS is operating under the slogan Duty To Give and with expected donations it will implement Iftar projects to benefit around 281,000 people in 19 countries as well as supporting development projects for 1.6 million beneficiaries around the world throughout the year.

Launching the campaign, the organisation’s Acting Secretary General, Faisal Mohamed Al-Emadi, said: “Between vulnerable people who are desperate for a helping hand and benevolent donors who cherish their humanitarian and religious duty, QRCS is building another bridge of giving and compassion. This campaign involves numerous Ramadan-specific and charitable projects for hundreds of thousands of poor and displaced people during and after the Holy Month."

There are many ways to get involved from volunteering to handout Iftar meals to making goods and cash donations. GO: Call 4402 7777 for more information.

Family Food Drive

On a more personal note, a group of friends have got together to accept donations of dried foods such as sugar, milk powder, Tang, dates, chickpeas, flour, rice and cooking oil or Al Meera boxes. They will pack up parcels to deliver to those in need in the community. If you would like to help, please contact Nazia on 5535 2624 for Wakra area, Jawairia on 5057 4340 or Lateefa on 6642 4539 for Gharrafa area or Rabia on 5536 4635 for Abu Hamour.

You could also get together with others to provide iftar for the workers in your compound or apartment building. It doesn’t have to be expensive and can make a big difference and show appreciation.

RAMADAN WELLNESS

While fasting from dawn to dusk is a spiritual obligation for Muslims during the Holy Month, it is equally important to maintain good health throughout this period. Here are some essential tips for staying healthy and energised during Ramadan.

Stay Hydrated

Keeping yourself hydrated outside of fasting hours is extremely important during Ramadan. It's crucial to drink plenty of fluids between Iftar and Suhour. Opt for water as your primary choice and avoid aerated drinks such as sodas, as well as caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee, which can lead to dehydration. Remember, staying hydrated helps maintain bodily functions and prevents fatigue.

Eat Hydrating Foods

Make sure to include hydrating foods into your meals. Dishes like soups and stews, as well as fruits and vegetables that have a high water content, such as watermelon, squash and spinach, are a good choice. These will not only provide essential nutrients but also help to replenish any fluids lost during the fasting period.

Choose the Right Foods

Start your day with a balanced Suhour meal comprising of complex carbohydrates, such as fruit, vegetables, beans, chickpeas or lentils. These release energy slowly, keeping you energised throughout the fasting hours. Avoid fried and processed foods and instead go for more nutritious options, including low-fat dairy and healthy unsaturated fats, such as avocado, nuts, salmon, olives and olive oil.

Eat Slowly

For a more comfortable fasting experience, take your meals slowly to avoid overeating, particularly when breaking your fast. With mindful eating, you’ll not only help prevent any discomfort from overindulging, but you’ll also enjoy your food more!

Exercise Moderately

Although it’s important to stay active during Ramadan, heavy exercise while fasting can lead to dehydration and fatigue. Instead, try to limit yourself to moderate activity, such as walking after Iftar or before Suhour, so as not to put too much strain on your body.

Prioritise Sleep

Try to get at least seven to eight hours of quality sleep every night to support your overall health and well-being. A good night's sleep has countless benefits and will help rejuvenate your body and mind to keep you energised and alert while fasting.

Consult a Doctor

If you have any underlying health conditions, such as diabetes or cardiac issues, make sure to consult with your doctor before fasting.

DELICIOUSLY LOCAL

The Holy Month is here. For many, it’s all about the wonderful Iftars and Suhours found across the city. But we thought this would also be a good time to think about traditional Qatari and Khaleeji culinary traditions and check out a few of the best places to find great Arabic food, from Qatari favourites to regional flavours. Of course, we know lots of them, but we also asked our mates at Doha Foodies on Facebook, and they didn’t disappoint. Read on for info on what to eat and where to find some of the best local food around, from the big names to the little hole-inthe-wall pitstops that you only know about if you live here and spend your time sniffing out the hidden gems. If you’re visiting during Ramadan, make sure you check for opening times.

• TASTE OF TRADITION

FLAVOURS OF QATAR

Like most countries in the Gulf, Qatar’s native food has a slight influence of Persian and Arabian flavours and preparations. But locally, it’s cooked in its own specific style and character. Traditional Qatari cuisine uses simple elements, such as fish, meat, rice, dates and spices.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the most popular local dishes.

Baid Tamat: A popular breakfast staple – scrambled eggs cooked with crushed tomatoes and aromatic spices.

Balaleet: A sweet and savoury vermicelli preparation, usually sweetened with sugar and cardamom, topped with an egg omelette, traditionally served at breakfast.

Harees: A well-known porridge-like dish, made with cracked wheat and meat, slow-cooked for more than eight hours, usually topped with melted butter, cinnamon.

Machboos: Considered a national dish across much of the Gulf, it is extremely popular. Seasoned rice along with chicken (sometimes fish) is prepared with a blend of aromatic spices, such as cloves and mainly black lime (also known as lumee), garnished with fried onions and served with tomato sauce.

Mumawwash: An aromatic rice preparation cooked with green lentils and spices, topped with dried shrimp.

Quzi (Ghoozi): A popular dish of roasted lamb, slow cooked with

spices, served on a bed of rice with fried onions, nuts and raisins.

Local Catch

Because of its location in the Gulf, Qatar also offers a great choice of fresh fish. A favourite is hammour (grouper), which is typically served grilled, fried or steamed. Then there’s Safi (rabbit fish) and Sobaity (sea bream), both equally popular local varieties, usually served with rice.

Street Food

Qatar also dishes up to some delicious snacky street food, such as falafel – deep fried chickpea fritters, served in Arabic pita bread pockets with fresh greens and sauces; shawarma – chicken or lamb meat carved from a rotating spit, wrapped in pita bread with salad and sauces; malgoum – shawarma served in Indian paratha bread with cheese and French fries; samboosa – deep fried stuffed pastries filled with cheese, vegetables or meat; and many others.

Sweet Delights

Qatari Halwa: A favourite traditional dessert enjoyed by all, made with cornstarch, sugar, saffron, rosewater and nuts.

Luqaimat: Donut-like fried dumplings with saffron and cardamom, soaked in sweet syrup.

Besides food, Gahwa or Arabic coffee is another favourite –it has a distinct cardamom flavour and is usually served with dates. The Indian-inspired milky, spiced karak chai is becoming increasingly popular too.

FINDING THE FOOD

Bayt Alwaldah

With a name that literally means ‘The Mother’s House’, it’s no surprise that this is helmed by a woman, Chef Hissa Al-Sulaiti. And the motto ‘It’s not just the food, it’s an experience’ tells us much of what we need to know about this place. Found on the Corniche in Mina District, Bayt Alwaldah boasts gorgeous views over the water and a menu that preserves the old traditional methods passed down from Chef Hissa’s mother combined with her own contemporary takes. A delightful combination of modern and traditional, it’s Qatari food with a touch of home.

GO: Call 7077 2000 or visit @bayt_alwaldah for more information.

Bayt Sharq

Found in an old 1920s Qatari house that’s been renovated by the original owner’s children, this place is in a gorgeous location close to the Corniche and surrounded by lush green gardens. Food is served on family-style sharing platters and the seafood machboos and yummy desserts come very highly recommended. Adding to Bayt Sharq’s authenticity credentials, the property is Heritage listed and there’s even a small museum on-site.

GO: Call 7745 4543 or 7770 4589 or visit @baytsharq.qa for more information.

Belhambar

One of the more recognised spots serving a fusion of traditional and modern Qatari cuisine, Belhambar is found right on the Corniche in Al Shyoukh Port. What they say: “Our menu does not contain fruits or vegetables that have been imported or genetically amended, they are from local Qatari farms. The oils used in cooking (olive oil, cow and sheep ghee) are fresh with a little high quality vegetable oil. Only sea and Himalayan salts are used. The milk and butter are prepared in the kitchen from fresh goat milk. Our jams are unsweetened. Our eggs are fresh from local farms.” The perfect place to taste truly local flavours. Make sure you try the spinach falafel.

MONTERO GETS NEW LEASE OF LIFE

FACT spent the day in the Mitsubishi Montero Sport GLS, a spacious and capable sports SUV with a respectable range of technical features.

• CITY RIDES

It’s hard to believe that after all our years of test-driving quality vehicles, this was the first time we found ourselves behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Montero. It was, however, worth the wait as the new Montero Sport proved to be a capable 4x4, one showcasing appealing interior and exterior designs along with convenient tech.

Updated Exterior

Our first impression of the latest generation Montero was that it now has a bigger, bolder and more aggressive exterior design than its predecessors. In our opinion, this rugged off-road SUV definitely looks the part.

The front end of the GLS features a sleek and stealthy black grille, complete with a large Mitsubishi logo right in the centre. Chrome bars in the upper grille section are flanked by sweptback LED running lamps, bestowing the vehicle with a sporty flair. Combined with the LED headlamps and foglamps, this arrangement results in an eye-catching face that announces this premium SUV in style.

The solid look and feel of this quality car continued at the sides. We admired the clean body lines running from front to back and the well-designed, low side bumpers sitting flush with the body. Our vehicle was fitted with two-tone, 18-inch alloy wheels, with larger than average hubs, providing better grip and more precise

steering in both wet and dry conditions.

At the back end, we agreed that the deep bumper and the protection plate emphasise the vehicle’s stability and strength, with the roof spoiler further accentuating the SUV’s streamlined styling. We also recognised how the distinctive rear LED lamp clusters add further character to the car.

Spacious Interior

Once inside, what struck us first was the ample space available throughout the vehicle. With three rows of seating, this comfortable sports SUV provides sufficient room for up to seven adults. The presence of an electric sunroof ensures plenty of natural light throughout the cabin, further adding to this 4x4’s spacious nature.

We appreciated the power-adjustable, dual-layered front seating with shoulder and side support and deeper centres that maximise back support. Offering ample head and leg room, the front-row seats certainly have a nice wrap-around feel. The second and third rows are built with the same quality materials and are also comfy but did prove slightly tighter than those in the cockpit.

Additionally, the storage area is greatly increased with the rear seating folded flat. To add to the car’s day-to-day convenience, this model is fitted with automatic tailgate

opening – meaning with hands full and keys in pocket, a little kicking motion under the rear of the vehicle is all it takes to trigger the sensor.

We took note of the freshly designed floor-level console, positioned between the front seats, with its smooth edges and improved storage space. We also appreciated the little smartphone shelf in the main console, complete with a rubber mat to prevent the device from sliding around.

Easy-to-Use Tech & Infotainment

One of the most useful aspects of this new Mitsubishi is the included modern tech. For starters, we found the customisable eight-inch colour LCD meter on the dashboard directly in front of the driver, to be very user-friendly with easy-to-read graphics. We effortlessly manoeuvred through the settings, adjusting the display to suit our preferences.

Secondly, the previously mentioned centre console houses a Smartphone-Link Display Audio (SDA). This in-car infotainment hub has a large display screen, an upgraded TomTom navigation system and a swift processing speed. We discovered the SDA can support Apple CarPlay through an iPhone, providing smart access to Apple music, Apple maps, messages and more through Siri. We could also link Android Auto to the vehicle via a smartphone, allowing us to operate many well-known apps via voice commands. We discovered plenty of additional features available through the Mitsubishi Remote App, which is free to download.

Other must-mention features include the sturdy steering wheel with its gratifying grip, housing all the necessary button functions, as well as the two power outlets in the Montero Sport: one in the centre console and one in the cargo area for rear passengers to charge devices or play music.

Reliable Power & Performance

As always, our favourite moment of the day was getting the vehicle out and about on the roads.

Our ride was powered by a 3.0-litre MIVEC petrol engine, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Although not the quickest off the mark, once the SUV picked up speed on the highway, it managed to showcase its power far more effectively. We enjoyed the new Montero sports mode that delivers

more verve and agility, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0-100km/h in under 10 seconds and to achieve a top speed of around 182km/h.

A brief but enjoyable spell in the sand proved this 4x4 to be as capable off-road as it is on the tarmac.

Mitsubishi have also equipped the Montero with Forward Collision Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control and an Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS), amongst other vital safety features.

Our Verdict

This attractive new offering from Mitsubishi has proven itself capable, comfortable and safe to drive. ✤

With three rows of seating, this comfortable sports SUV provides sufficient room for up to seven adults.”

THREE JEWELS

Aston Martin hosted an unprecedented unveiling of three new cars on the same day.

Aston Martin, the iconic luxury British sports car manufacturer, boldly presents a bloodline born for the racing line with the announcement of the AMR24 for the upcoming Formula 1 season, alongside the new Vantage and Vantage GT3.

Unveiled on the day the marque’s AMR24 Formula 1 challenger first touched the tarmac at the home of British motorsport, the new Vantage is the quintessential Aston Martin sports car and the most driver focused and fastest Vantage in the brand’s history. The new Vantage packs a notable punch, thanks to its handbuilt, 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine. As a result of this powerhouse, producing 656hp and 590lb-ft of torque, the Vantage is capable of a top speed of 325km/h and a 0-95km/h time of roughly 3.4 seconds.

Boasting a highly evolved aluminium structure, perfect 50:50 weight distribution and state-of-the-art suspension provide the foundation for a definitive driving experience. The Vantage features an enhanced body structure to deliver more focused and engaging dynamics thanks to additional underbody stiffening components for increased overall torsional rigidity.

Having been introduced in the year of the first World Championship Formula One race at Silverstone in 1950, the 74year history of Vantage runs side-by-side with that of the famous circuit that Aston Martin’s team now calls home, at the cuttingedge AMR Technology Campus.

Engineered for real drivers, Vantage’s authentic, unadulterated celebration of pure performance, technically crafted to deliver ultimate thrills with maximum confidence, sits naturally alongside the marque’s visceral challenger for the 2024 FIA Formula One World Championship.

Both cars represent Aston Martin’s ambition to be a leader in highperformance technologies and on track, with the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team seeking to build on its best-ever season in 2023, claiming nine podiums and 280 Championship points under the expert control of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll. Additionally, joining those models is the Vantage GT3 racer, inspired by the production sports car whose famous name it will boldly carry to some of the world’s most prestigious endurance events including the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2024.

Lawrence Stroll, Executive Chairman of Aston Martin, said: “These three brothers in speed embroider our DNA with new dynamism.” ✤

• CHEF IN FOCUS

What is your earliest kitchen or food memory and how did this shape your decision to pursue a career in the culinary field?

Well, it all started at home, cooking with both my grandmothers – one Italian, the other Basque. Every time I entered their houses, something delicious was being prepared, and they awakened my curiosity for food, ingredients and traditions. It was almost like a competition between them to see who could show me or teach me more.

After finishing high school, my father, like a good Italian father, was pushing me to study a traditional career, like medicine or engineering. Imagine when I told him I wanted to be a chef. At that time, being a chef seemed nothing like the glamour or a five star. Of course, he said no. We went back and forth for almost a year until one day, just to push him a bit, I said ‘OK, I will study medicine, but in the army,’ thinking he would say ‘no dear son, no need’. But it happened that my father had a good friend in the army and a week after that, I was in the army medical school! Anyway, after all this finished, I finally started to study at the hotel business school of Buenos Aires for culinary arts and from my early days as a student and trainee, I understood that this would be the love of my life and remembered the passion of my two grandmothers teaching me all their secrets. It is with this passion still that I start every day

Your last post was in Moscow. What attracted you to come to Qatar and what are your plans for dining at The Westin?

After 11 years in Moscow, I needed something new and different. I was interested in the Middle East and the rich culture here, but

due to various circumstances, it never happened. Then, this time, as they say, all the planets aligned. On my first call with my GM, when he told me the offer was Qatar, I think I took two seconds to say yes.

Regarding the plans for Westin Doha, it’s first of all to maintain the level of culinary excellence the hotel already has and to refresh some ideas and concepts. One of these is Hunters, for which I have big plans, which you will hear about soon. Westing Doha has a rich reputation as one of the best culinary hotels and, because of that, expectations are very high. I’m sure all of this will make the position more interesting and challenging for me.

What do you feel are the most exciting culinary trends for 2024?

Trends are changing so fast, but I believe that better than following a trend, here at Westin Doha we need to create trends and watch how others follow us.

For the coming years, I see these culinary trends:

Salts With History

While salt is one of the most common ingredients in cooking, expect to see a noticeable shift to unrefined salts (Black Hawaiian, Kala Namak, Persian Blue, Celtic Salt, Fleur de Sel) as consumers move away from table salt staples in search of something far more unique to add to their favourite dishes. Sourcing will also be a priority for many chefs, working with global producers to identify salts from around the world and understand their history and uses.

Multisensory Dining

According to different experts, consumers will continue to look for culinary experiences that take them beyond taste and texture and provide a holistic experience filled with more extravagance and novelty.

Emphasis on Locally Sourced Ingredients and Sustainability

I do think more attention will be given to venues that incorporate local ingredients and highlight the cultural surroundings. We need to have a compromise with our planet and the ecology to be more local in all we can and be more creative and curious to work with local and regional producers

What is your signature dish, how was it developed and what makes it popular?

Working for so many years as a chef I believe I have much more than one dish that identifies me, particularly relative to the Argentinian meats. But I can say, one of the dishes I most enjoy to prepare and eat is my Patagonian Prawns Ceviche, which is coming soon to Hunters. ✤

ARABIAN CULINARY MASTERPIECES

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT
AMS discovered the pinnacle of Qatari fusion cuisine on a visit to SMAT.

Approaching SMAT Restaurant, a culinary beacon known for its Qatari fusion cuisine, we were greeted by the graceful ballet of a water feature, basking in the afternoon sun. The smooth drive up to the entrance, paired with the attentive valet service, also hinted at the quality and service awaiting us inside.

The interior didn’t disappoint, with an ambience steeped in the mystique of Arabian nights. Murals etched the walls, while a palette of cream and gold hues conjured images of undulating desert dunes under a moonlit sky. The ornate flooring pattern led us to our seating outside, with lanterns above casting a soft, inviting light, reminiscent of stars twinkling in a desert sky.

Our Affable Guides

Greeted at our al fresco table with views stretching across the Arabian Gulf, Hamza and Shaban were the consummate guides through the menu's labyrinth of flavours. Their passion for the dishes was as palpable as the gentle sea breeze, their detailed descriptions painting vivid pictures of the origin of each offering. Our evening commenced with the Al Modaad salad, a vibrant mosaic of peppery arugula and jewel-like pomegranate seeds scattered atop a canvas of wholesome split peas, each forkful yielding with a satisfying crunch. The Mzatara Samboussa was a delightful paradox, its pastry crisp and tender, encasing a heart of molten cheese and earthy Zaatar – a homage to the rustic simplicity of Middle Eastern fare.

The Kebbeh Erbana was a masterpiece, finely minced lamb enveloped in a crispy bulgur shell, each bite infused with the tang of tamarind, transporting us to the ancient spice caravans that once traversed the region. In an artful twist on tradition, the Dolma Maki revealed itself to be an inventive fusion. Instead of the usual verdant wrap of grape leaves, the dish was presented in the form of sushi pieces. Each morsel contained sweet green mango, all balanced with gentle acidity from a pomegranate dressing.

The Warmth Of Qatari Tradition

Next up, was a dish that resonated with the spirit of Qatari hospitality – Harees Nataa. Its creamy wheat base nurtured tender, slow-cooked chicken. This comforting classic, often savoured during the Holy Month of Ramadan and prepared with patience, is a labour of love. The wheat is soaked overnight, gently simmered with chicken and subtle spices until it reaches a porridge-like consistency, then lovingly stirred to a velvety perfection that warms the soul.

A Hidden Gem

As dusk settled over Doha, casting a warm glow across the water, we were reminded of the city's capacity for surprise. It had been 10 years since we first navigated its streets, and yet here we were, uncovering SMAT's culinary riches that had remained hidden from our view. Such discoveries remind us to embrace cultural exploration, to seek out nuanced flavours and experiences that lie waiting in the everyday.

While we lingered in our reverie, our main courses began to arrive. The first to capture our attention was the Chickdemia –tender pieces of chicken bathed in a rich, aromatic macadamia butter. The meat, with its golden-brown sear, was succulent and rich, its flavours deepened by the luxurious nuttiness of the butter. This opulent dish was served alongside a bed of fluffy white basmati rice, which served as a delicate counterpoint to the richness, absorbing the liquid and ensuring that each bite was as flavourful as the last.

Then there was the Majbous Al Hawameer, a harmonious marriage of the Gulf's bounty with the zest of the Indian subcontinent. The tandoori hamour fillet, a cherished treasure of the Gulf's azure waters, was graced with a saffron-infused embrace, the dill adding a touch of greenery that seemed to capture the very essence of an oasis in bloom.

Finally, the Majbous Al Shuyoukh. Here, beef ribs, imbued with the fragrant whisper of thyme, were treated with a reverence befitting royalty, their fibres yielding effortlessly to our knives. The succulence of the meat married the spiced rice beneath, with each grain a testament to the rich palette of flavours cultivated from the diverse heritage of the Arabian Peninsula.

In the interlude before dessert, our gaze was drawn to the picturesque view of 974 Stadium in the distance, its lights a luminescent marvel against the evening sky. Closer to us, boats bobbed peacefully on the Gulf's waters and the sounds of arriving families punctuated the air, their laughter a testament to the shared joy. Children's carefree play unfolded alongside this tranquil scene, adding a layer of vitality to the atmosphere.

Desserts That Bridged Continents

As we rounded off our meal, the Quors was a tribute to Belgian mastery, its rich chocolate blending effortlessly with the smooth Lotus sauce in a delightful marriage of East meets West. The Zougha was a revelation. Their take on crème brûlée, it was delicately infused with saffron, imparting a luxurious warmth to the classic dessert, with the pomegranate glaze offering a nod to the region’s rich flavours. Our evening at SMAT drew to a close, leaving us with the impression of having been guests at a grand banquet of culture. Framed by the Arabian Gulf, accompanied by happy families and guided by the gracious hospitality of our hosts, we were enveloped in an experience that was a vibrant mosaic of taste, sight and sound. It was a feast that transcended the senses, granting us the same warmth and welcome one would find in a local home. ✤

A JOURNEY THROUGH CHINESE CUISINE

Laura Morris took a culinary trip to the land of the dragon at Ruby Wu's, Radisson Blu Hotel Doha.

As I descended the grand staircase into Ruby Wu's, the captivating charm of ancient China instantly enveloped me. The archway guided me towards the night’s unforgettable dining experience while vibrant red lanterns illuminated the space, filling the vastness of the grand restaurant. Heard from afar, the sound of flowing water filled the air, gently passing beneath small bridges that connected different sections of the restaurant. Everywhere I looked, immense red vases adorned the room, their intricately detailed designs paying homage to the rich history of Chinese culture. Large tables bore red tableware, symbolising prosperity and good fortune. Carefully considered lighting cast a soft, welcoming glow towards plush benches where we took our seats for the evening.

Ruby Wu's exuded a bustling, casual vibe, creating a welcoming atmosphere for diners to relax and savour every moment of their culinary journey. The restaurant boasts a well-established, carefully curated menu that hasn't changed much in recent years. Chef Austin Yang spoke highly of the culinary masterpieces on offer. Each dish showcases the rich heritage and artistry of Chinese cuisine, with complex flavours, exquisite presentation and carefully balanced ingredients.

The appetisers served as a delightful introduction to the culinary journey. The Vegetable Spring Rolls, accompanied by sweet and sour sauce, were a vegetarian masterpiece. The expertly fried rolls offered a satisfying crunch. Inside, the well-seasoned fillings created a harmonious balance of flavours. Next came deepfried prawns, coated with mayonnaise and black sesame seeds: a true culinary gem. The large, visually appealing prawns were perfectly cooked, maintaining a balance between tenderness and crispness. The creamy mayonnaise added a luxurious texture, enhancing the overall flavour profile.

Can you try any authentic Chinese restaurant without sampling some dim sum? I think not! We opted for the chicken variety, pan-fried to perfection. Served with a soy dip, each piece was a delightful blend of flavours and textures, rich and herby. The exterior boasted a satisfying crispiness, while the interior revealed a succulent and well-seasoned chicken filling. The soy dip provided a savoury counterpart, elevating the overall taste experience of this delectable appetiser.

The main course offerings unveiled a delightful array of Chinese flavours and textures, leaving a lasting impression on my palate. We were delighted at the arrival of the roasted Peking-style duck breast with pancakes, leeks, cucumber and duck sauce – a favourite of mine on any menu! The thinly sliced breast showcased lean and succulent meat that melted in the mouth. Each bite was a delightful combination of savoury flesh, fresh leeks and cucumber, harmonised by the rich and flavourful sauce, of which I always enjoy lashings. And with these generous portion sizes, there was plenty to go around! Our next main was the sautéed sliced chicken, with red and green peppers and Szechuan sauce. This arrived with drama on a sizzling platter, emanating an irresistible aroma. Perfectly cooked and oozing with flavour, the Szechuan sauce added a bold and spicy kick, complemented by the vibrant flavours of charred red and green pepper.

Our final main of the evening did not disappoint – we tasted the

stir-fried beef tenderloin with vegetables in black pepper sauce. What a revelation in warmth and creaminess: expertly cooked beef carried a subtle smokiness that heightened its flavour profile while the rich black pepper sauce, perfectly seasoned, provided a creamy aftertaste. On the side, (and one of the bestselling dishes on the menu) the Yang Zhou fried rice with shrimp, egg, chicken and vegetables proved to be a flavour-packed delight. Each forkful revealed a harmonious blend of shrimp, egg and chicken, combined with a medley of vegetables. The fried rice was moreish, with each grain infused with the essence of the ingredients, creating a delicious ensemble that perfectly complemented our range of dishes.

The desserts at Ruby Wu's added a delightful twist to the culinary journey, offering a sweet and memorable conclusion beyond the usual offerings. The vanilla parfait, passion fruit cube and ganache tartlet presented a delightful combination of textures and flavours. Beautifully presented and packed full of flavours, the creamy and velvety consistency of the parfait paired well with the zesty burst of the passion fruit. Spiced crepes, caramelised pineapple and honey ice cream also offered a unique and enticing combination. The thin and delicate spice-infused crepes provided a delightful texture that encased the caramelised pineapple, while the fruit’s sweetness, enhanced by the caramelisation, played well with the warmth of the spices and a heaped scoop of honey ice cream added a cool and luscious element, creating a perfect marriage of flavours that lingered on the palate.

that is both lively and welcoming. It is no wonder that the restaurant has become a go-to dining destination for those seeking an authentic taste of China. RUSTIC MEETS REFINED

• DINING DELIGHT
AMS experienced a taste of Tulum in the heart of Doha.

Crossing the threshold of Tulum, the vibrant energy of convivial chatter and the rhythmic backdrop of pulsating music immediately greeted us.

The open-air setting, a canvas of natural wood and white drapery, beckoned us towards the shimmering pool, reflecting the tranquil sky. Laughter mingled with the clinking of glasses, creating a symphony of sounds that celebrated the joy of dining out.

The décor achieved an artful balance, embodying the spirit of Tulum with its rustic undertones and elegant simplicity. As daylight dwindled, the glow from woven lampshades softened the space, complementing the sunset’s watercolour display. In this setting, where casual elegance reigned, relaxation was the unspoken dress code.

Shanib quickly settled us into our seats, unfurling the narrative of the menu. He painted a picture of Tulum, a jewel of Mexico, whose culinary riches inspire each dish, speaking of the authenticity and vibrancy of street-side favourites and how they are seamlessly merged with the sophistication expected by the well-travelled gourmand.

A Taste Of Tradition

We began our culinary voyage with the Guacamole Con Cacahuate. A dish with roots deep in the heart of Mexico that’s elevated by the addition of peanuts, which added a textural symphony reminiscent of a well-orchestrated crunch against the smooth guacamole, akin to a gentle tide meeting a pebbled shore. The Panuchos transported us to the Yucatán Peninsula, a staple that speaks of home kitchens and street vendors alike. Our taste

buds danced to the harmony of the chicken's smoky notes and the refried beans' earthy tones, enveloped in a delightful tortilla –the culinary equivalent of a warm embrace.

Each forkful of the Mexican Cowboy Salad offered a hearty embrace with its succulent flank steak taking centre stage. Grilled to perfection, the meat's robust flavour and tenderness were complemented by the creamy avocado and the contrasting textures of black beans and crisp lettuce. The coriander dressing was a bright, aromatic flourish that tied the elements together, adding a zesty kick that elevated the dish to new heights, while hints of coconut oil whispered of tropical influences and the crunch of the crispy tortilla added an enjoyable final touch.

A Community Of Cuisine

Before the main courses arrived, Chef Sergio took a moment to educate us on the virtues of blue corn, a cornerstone of Mexican cooking, which he sourced to craft tortillas that were visually appealing and entirely authentic. He spoke fervently about the sense of community that the restaurant has cultivated. It is a place where food is the binding thread, bringing people together. His passion was as palpable as the aromas wafting from the kitchen. He inquired with genuine interest about our initial impressions, his eyes lighting up as we shared our enjoyment.

A Triumphant Trio

This sense of connection and authenticity flowed seamlessly into our experience of the Chicken El Pastor. The charred, caramelised edges of the chicken met with the tangy sweetness of grilled

pineapple in a vibrant dance of flavours, a culinary recital that spoke of Mexico's rich and colourful food heritage.

In the Lamb Tacos, we found the rustic essence of traditional cuisine, where the slow-cooked lamb, tender as a whisper, melded with the robust achiote and black beans, each mouthful a narrative of pastoral life and time-honoured cooking methods. Our foray into the Baja Fish Tacos was a delightful contrast, where the golden-battered Hamour was a nod to Baja California. The chipotle mayonnaise was a fiery wave that broke against the crispy shore of the fish, offering a burst of heat that was tamed by the cooling cabbage slaw.

As we savoured the final bites of the main courses, we enjoyed a warm conversation with one of the staff members. Originally from Argentina, her journey had taken her from her home country to Tulum. From there, she’d made her way to the dynamic heart of Doha, a path that echoed the fusion of cultures we’ve come to appreciate in Qatar. Her story, infused with authenticity, served as the perfect segway to our last course.

An Indulgent Ending

Desserts were a final flourish, with the Tres Leches Cake offering a sweet, creamy embrace. The sponge was so tender – soaked in the three kinds of milk – it was like savouring the essence of a cloud. The Churros, a simple yet indulgent Spanish street food, transformed into a culinary spectacle. Each strip was a golden wand of delight, with a crust as crisp as autumn leaves, paired with a chocolate sauce that was a dark, velvety pool that led us into a world of decadence.

The dishes at Tulum, so vivid and inviting, begged to be eaten

with hands. As each arrived, we found ourselves succumbing to the primal joy of touch, taste and scent. This was the kind of place where time seemed to stand still, encouraging long, leisurely hours of conversation. Imagining the brunch here, it promised a perfect blend of laid-back indulgence and culinary exploration. And while the ambience whispered casual and carefree, the undercurrent of professionalism and skill on display was, unequivocally, second to none. Each bite was a testament to a culinary craft honed to perfection. Tulum was not merely a dining venue but a destination for the soul. ✤

WHERE HERITAGE MEETS FLAVOUR

AMS headed to Qureshi Bukhara Doha to experience authentic Indian cuisine with a family touch.

• FOODIE FIESTA

As we stepped across the threshold of the acclaimed Qureshi Bukhara Doha, at the Dusit Hotel & Suites, we were immediately embraced by an atmosphere steeped in tradition. The décor – a tapestry of rich terracotta tiles and rustic wooden beams – whispered stories of a proud heritage, promising a dining experience as authentic as the land that inspired it.

The open kitchen, a stage for the culinary maestros at work, afforded us a transparent glimpse into the artistry behind the dishes we were about to savour. Chefs, adorned in crisp whites, moved with a choreographed grace, fanning the flames and masterfully crafting each skewer of kebab with an air of assured expertise. The dining area, illuminated by the soft glow of lanterns casting intricate shadows, was a sanctuary of warmth and intimacy. Each table, set meticulously, was an invitation to indulge in a shared experience. As we admired the ambience, our attention was drawn to the attentive servers in traditional attire, a rich hue of crimson that echoed the warmth of the surroundings.

A Burst Of Flavour

We were delighted when one of the staff quickly and deftly presented us with an array of delicious starters. The Murgh Peshawari Tikka tantalised our taste buds, its smoky aroma intertwining with a symphony of spices. The tender chicken, marinated in a blend of Peshawari spices, was cooked to perfection, offering a succulent texture with each bite.

Next, the Murgh Malai Kabab presented a stark, yet delightful contrast. Its creaminess, derived from a rich marinade of cream and cheese, enveloped the chicken with a velvety texture, creating a harmonious balance of flavours. The subtle hints of cardamom and nutmeg in the marinade added a touch of warmth, enhancing the overall experience.

Finally, the Seekh Kabab was a revelation. The finely minced lamb, seasoned with a medley of herbs and spices, was skewered and grilled to achieve a crispy exterior, while maintaining a moist interior. The kebab's robust flavour was further accentuated by the smoky char from the grill, making it a memorable end to our starter course.

The Family Legacy

As we took a pause between courses, Chef Mohammad Irfan Qureshi stopped by our table. He shared stories of his father with an infectious warmth, a man who, though retired, still revels in the joy of cooking. His anecdotes brought to life a family's love affair with food, a legacy that extends from their home in India to the dishes we were enjoying. Chef Qureshi's pride in their heritage was palpable, a tradition enriched by the Silk Road's history and the tastes of royalty, yet as relatable as a family dinner brimming with stories and laughter.

Exploring The Heart Of India

The mains unveiled a spectrum of intense flavours. Leading the ensemble was the Murgh Yakhani Biryani, a regal combination of fragrant basmati rice and tender chicken, with each grain infused with meticulously simmered spices and adorned with saffron's golden hues and fresh herbs for an eye-catching and delectable dish.

fact magazine 79 FOODIE FIESTA •

Accompanying the biryani, the Qureshi Bukhara Naan made an unforgettable impression. Family-sized and vast, it was impressively displayed on a stand, inviting us to tear and share. Its soft interior, encased by a satisfyingly crisp edge and brushed with a whisper of ghee, added a subtle richness, serving as the perfect companion for the meal's robust flavours.

The Murgh Makhani combined tandoor-cooked chicken in a velvety tomato sauce that was both comforting and thrilling, with a buttery texture accented by a tang and a hint of chilli heat.

The Dal Qureshi Bukhara lent a humble yet profound note to the meal, its lentils slow cooked to perfection, their smokiness and depth bringing a touch of nostalgia and a reminder of the simple, profound pleasures of dining. Together, the dishes wove a captivating tale of tradition and innovation.

Desserts To Remember

The conclusion of our feast was an exquisite selection of desserts, each a paragon of sweetness. The Shahed e Jaam presented itself as a jewel on the table. Delicate, honey-soaked fritters with exteriors that were crisp and golden, yielding to a soft, fragrant interior.

Next, the Phirni, a classic rice pudding, was a portrait of subtlety in a clay pot. Its creamy texture, a canvas for the gentle flavours of ground rice and milk, was infused with the aromatic hint of cardamom. The surface, sprinkled with slivers of pistachio and almonds, added a textural contrast that delighted the palate. Finally, the Rasmalai, tender discs of paneer soaked in a saffronlaced milk, were an ode to the essence of sweetness. Each bite dissolved effortlessly, the milky syrup imbued with the richness of saffron threads, imparting a taste that lingered on the tongue.

Overall, our dining experience wove a legacy of familial warmth and culinary heritage, making each course a chapter from the Qureshi family history. AN UNFORGETTABLE DINING EXPERIENCE

• PALATE PLEASER
SD encountered Nanyang cuisine at its best on a visit to Kai’s Songbird.

Perched at the edge of the marina in Porto Arabia, Kai’s Songbird, in the charming Corinthia Yacht Club, is nothing short of a whimsical wonderland. We walk through a corridor with an al fresco area on the right, overlooking luxury yachts at the Pearl, and glimmering wallpaper on the left. Avian-themed lights hang above us – and at the end of the corridor, beyond a large display of fresh green apples, we witness a beautiful symphony of sights, sounds and senses.

Green apples, a sign of peace and prosperity, playfully dot the décor and are a nod to the restaurant’s heritage (albeit red apples are the mainstay of Kai Mayfair, Kai's Songbird’s sister property in London). This is a fantastical reimagination of a garden from our dreams. We arrive shortly before sunset – and the timing is brilliant. Bathed in dusky golden hour shades, the views are breathtaking from this venue, and we can already tell this is going to be an unforgettable dining experience.

We’re seated right next to a massive centrepiece that brings the whole space together. Glass fronds hang from high above and gracefully sway in harmony. Lush greenery and modern design elements complement the fragrance of herbs and, of course, those fresh green apples. We can hear wind chimes every time a light breeze wafts through.

Kai’s Songbird serves Nanyang cuisine which made its very first appearance in Kai Mayfair. Nanyang cuisine was liberated by the cosmopolitan vibes of London, and the concept still stands strong 14 years and a Michelin star later.

The impeccable amalgamation of Chinese and Southeast Asian dishes reflects strongly in a well-thought-out menu. All the

comfort classics have interesting twists and Prashant, our very knowledgeable table host, suggests a few of their best sellers to kick off.

The Wasabi Prawns that arrive first set the stage for more Nanyang goodness. Perfectly battered and doused in a light wasabi mayonnaise (even the haters will appreciate this one), this dish is easily a crowd pleaser. The Prawn Toast served next comes alongside a notable sweet chilli sauce. The Peking Duck Salad is a winner with pomegranate mixed in with baby cress and rocket. The dressing is light – a mix of honey, soy and lime – and refreshingly summery.

Speaking of duck, there’s something better than the salad. London's Aromatic Crispy Duck is assembled tableside and is a must-try. The addition of the sambal sauce inside the pancake really lifts the dish to a whole new level of umami.

The Chilli Lobster Bao Sliders are a revelation. They transport us straight to Singapore, right in front of a large bowl of the worldfamous Singapore Chilli Crab. We’ve dipped enough mantous in the savoury, spicy, greasy goodness that is the chilli gravy to recall that these freshly steamed and lightly fried baos taste exactly like that. The lobster takes it up a notch – it’s recognisable yet refined. There’s extra sauce to go along with them, and we aren’t shy with it. The mains commence after a much-needed 15-minute digestion break. One of Kai's Songbird’s signature dishes, the Sea Bass in Black Bean Sauce and Mandarin Peel, is in perfect symphony with everything we’ve had so far. If this dining affair is a musical, the sea bass serenades our palate. The fish is flaky and delicious, and the simple black bean sauce has a citrusy high note from the mandarin peel.

fact magazine 83 PALATE PLEASER •

Our next main arrives – a medium ribeye (the cook is recommended by the chef) with a honey and soya glaze. It is faultless, and our steak knife slides right through. The sauce on the side is silky, spicy and has the earthy fragrances of coriander and lemongrass, sweetened by honey. Both dishes are complemented by the exceptional Spiced-Scented Fried Rice. It comes across as a simple rice dish, but it’s far from it. Incredible aromatics fill the air and every spoon feels like a hug. Fluffy grains are infused with Nanyang essences and the dish creates the perfect foil for the bolder flavours of the mains.

Familiar tastes and redefined textures meet modern cooking styles. Traditional dishes are levelled up with contemporary flair. Every order is impressive with creative plating. This is Michelinstar-worthy gastronomy, and we are far too stuffed.

There’s a little space left for dessert, though. And Prashant serves up his top recommendations – a pandan sponge with coconut ice cream, topped with sago pearls, and an exciting dessert named Chocolate Does Grow on Trees. Capped with a large but perfectly constructed sesame macaron, the Valrhona chocolate fondant cake playfully integrates hazelnuts, praline ice cream and chestnut paste, creating the perfect representation of a mini and, thankfully completely edible, mythical forest.

Dessert adds the final flourish to our accurate prediction of this being an unforgettable experience. It’s the perfect end to a stellar night of epicurean excellence and there’s only one thing on our minds. An intimate sunset dinner with Doha’s night lights? Kai’s Songbird. A joyful yet sophisticated afternoon? Kai’s Songbird. A vibrant yet intimate celebratory meal? Kai’s Songbird. You get the drift? ✤

DISCOVER SAUDI ARABIA

From breathtaking, expansive desert landscapes, to fascinating historical sites, impressive forts, thriving cities and more, Saudi Arabia has a lot to offer.

TRAVEL •

Situated in Western Asia and encompassing a major portion of the Arab Peninsula is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Shaped by its distinguished position as a historic trade hub and the birthplace of Islam, the country is steeped in rich culture, heritage and tradition.

In recent years, following the announcement of the ambitious Saudi Vision 2030 and having undergone significant growth and transformation, the Kingdom has opened its doors to the world since 2019.

So, pack up and get ready for a unique experience. We’ve rounded up a few places that might interest you.

AlUla

An extraordinary desert landscape like no other, AlUla is an open-air archaeological, cultural and touristic area that has come to be recognised among the most notable places to visit in Saudi Arabia. Situated towards the northwestern side of the Kingdom, AlUla is a paradise for explorers, history buffs and archaeology enthusiasts.

Home to Hegra, the first Saudi Arabian site to enter the UNESCO World Heritage List, AlUla is an ancient land where cultures met and many civilisations were built. Once a thriving international trade hub, the archaeological site of Hegra (also known as Mada’in Saleh) looks similar to its more famous sister site of Petra, a few hundred miles to the north in Jordan. It was the second city of the Nabataean kingdom – one of the most enigmatic and intriguing civilisations. Among its historical landmarks, you will discover hidden stories, as its rocks are full of obscure symbols, exquisite inscriptions and texts dating back to the first century BC. Then, there are more than 100 aweinspiring, carefully carved tombs, of which the Tomb of Lihyan Son of Kuza is the tallest and most famous.

AlUla also has a wealth of natural wonders that are a mustvisit, including the dramatic rock formations, such as Jabal AlFil (Elephant Rock), the Rainbow Rock, the Raqasat (Dancing Rocks) and the famous Face Rock. Venture to Gharameel for a rare view of the Milky Way, free from light pollution. You can camp in a traditional Bedouin setup, with an expert guide on hand to tell you about the stars and constellations. Then, on the other hand, you can also experience luxury living and fine dining like no other with properties such as Our Habitas AlUla, Banyan Tree AlUla and others, that offer Arabian opulence at its finest.

But it doesn’t stop there, AlUla regularly hosts exciting events like the ongoing Desert X AlUla 2024, the upcoming AlUla Skies Festival 2024 and sensational concerts by some of the best musical artists from around the globe at the Maraya Concert Hall.

Al-Ahsa

Al-Ahsa, in the Eastern Province, is home to the largest palm oasis in the world. Spread across an area of more than 85.4sq/km, this picturesque desert escape boasts more than 2.5 million palm trees, including date palms, which receive

water from a huge underground aquifer. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's an ideal choice for visitors looking to delight in the oasis’ lush greenery and indulge in its famous Khalas dates, considered among the best in the world.

Next, explore the wonderful Souq Al Qaisariya and grab a souvenir from the wares that reflect the region’s rich trading legacy. Then, continue roaming Al-Ahsa’s major urban city, Al-Hofuf, and visit the famous King Abdullah Environmental Park that has playgrounds, a football field, mazes and a theatre – sure to keep the entire family entertained.

The Al-Ahsa Archaeological and Heritage Museum houses more than 1,400 antiquities, coins, photographs, manuscripts and other archaeological treasures from the oasis’ long and storied history.

Then, take a quick 30-minute drive to the majestic Al Qarah mountains that are perfect for hiking or camping trips. Step into the stunning limestone caves that were formed by subaerial weathering processes. Nestled within these caves on the western elevation is the Dougha Handmade Pottery Factory. One of the oldest of its kind, local potters have been plying their trade for generations. Here you can also try your hand at creating something of your own at the wheel or pick up a souvenir to take home. Finally, located on the city’s outskirts, is the Al-Asfar Lake (also known as Yellow Lake). An

Jeddah

Offering a perfect blend of tradition and modernity is the ‘Bride of the Red Sea’ – Jeddah. This beautiful port city is a commercial centre and the second largest city in Saudi Arabia. Interestingly, Jeddah is derived from Jaddah, the Arabic word for grandmother. Legend has it, it’s the burial place of the first woman – Eve. Her remains are at the Cemetery of Eve in central Jeddah.

Then, take a step into the incredible Al Balad district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that was established in the seventh century and served as a gateway for Muslims making the annual pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah, as well as a significant trading destination. From the remarkable mosques to the gorgeous houses built with coral stone and decorated with intricate latticed windows, Al Balad is a living homage to Jeddah’s history.

For the art aficionados, the Athr Gallery is a leading contemporary art spot that regularly hosts engaging exhibitions and events. Get the kids ready for a fun-filled, exciting day at the Al Shallal Theme Park, which offers some of the most thrilling rides. Also, the Fakieh Aquarium boasts sprawling tunnels and vast tanks that house more than 200 species of fish, with around 85% being native to Jeddah’s undisturbed coral reefs. Moreover, the beautiful Jeddah Waterfront and Jeddah Corniche are great spots for a sunset stroll. Relax and enjoy the wondrous views of the Red Sea or take the time to explore and dive into the excellent local cuisine.

Riyadh

Visit the ever-evolving and flourishing capital of Saudi Arabia – Riyadh. Once a humble desert village to now being the largest city in the Kingdom, Riyadh has come a long way. First, how about getting the best view of the city? You can do that by visiting the Sky Bridge at the top of the Kingdom Centre that's located 300m above the city. Learn about the storied history at places like the National Museum, Diriyah Museum and Al Masmak Palace Museum. Visit one of Riyadh's oldest traditional markets that carries 100 years of history – Souk Al-Zal, found in the Al-Dirah neighbourhood. Or indulge in the growing finedining scene in Riyadh that’s seeing globally renowned restaurants opening across the city. Take a drive some 100km away from Riyadh and visit The Edge of the World (Jebel Fihrayn), an unexpected and dramatic geological wonder in the rocky desert, northwest of the city. While the aforementioned places could serve as a delightful start to exploring Saudi Arabia, there are numerous other destinations that also deserve your attention. These include Damman, which boasts some of the most scenic beaches, and the abundantly beautiful hill stations of Taif and Abha. Yes, you heard us right! INSPIRED BY FASHION

Ghada Khalid, otherwise known as @Ghadabintk, tells us what keeps her 47,000 followers coming back for more.

How and why did you get involved in influencing?

I have always had a deep passion for fashion and photography, and I found a way to merge these two interests by becoming an influencer and sharing my knowledge and experiences with others who appreciate unique and unconventional styles. I have always possessed a natural talent for crafting captivating content and thoroughly enjoy the creative process. There are numerous benefits to becoming an influencer, such as establishing a strong personal brand, collaborating with well-known brands, and building connections within a community of individuals who share similar interests. It has the potential to serve as a platform for inspiring, educating and entertaining others as I pursue my passions.

I began my photography journey in 2014, capturing moments from my travels around the globe. Along the way, I started sharing glimpses of my daily life, such as sipping coffee with perfectly manicured nails. To my surprise, this caught the attention of others. With my innate fashion sense, I gradually shifted towards sharing more content related to fashion.

Do you have any tips for would-be influencers on how they should come up with relatable content and grow their audience?

My only tip is to stay true to yourself and not be afraid to express yourself openly. Unfortunately, there will always be individuals who try to bring you down with negative remarks if they don't want to see you grow. The best approach is to ignore them and continue being your authentic self.

You made several posts from the Qatar World Cup 2022 –particularly with the Argentinian flag. Are you a big fan of football? What sparked this interest?

Football has always interested me. Growing up, I was a devoted fan of Messi and closely followed his career at Barcelona. Witnessing his numerous achievements in the sport, I couldn't help but root for him, especially after his disappointing exit from the World Cup in 2014. In 2022, I had the incredible opportunity to attend games and cheer him on. The experience was truly unforgettable. And when he triumphed in my home country, seeing him donning a bisht, it became a cherished moment that will forever stay with me

It looks like you also enjoy karting. Are you generally a sporty girl? What else do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

The answer is yes, I am interested in sports; I watch them most of the time, but I also enjoy playing paddle whenever I have the opportunity. Karting, bowling and billiards are all enjoyable hobbies, but I am just starting out and I do them primarily for fun.

And, lastly, please tell us about the cat that appears on your feed.

This is my fur baby, his name is Nanoosh. I think of him as my son He has gained a lot of the community's attention due to his stunningly large eyes and his impeccable sense of style, which has made him a popular figure. ✤

Having worked with Kamala on many occasions, this time the brand chose to use her prints in conversation with their own silhouettes and it’s hoped the SS24 collection will bring awareness to the current situation in Sudan and show QASIMI’s support for those affected.

1984’s Women in Crystal Cubes acts as the starting point for the collection, the centre of everything, alongside later works like My Plant, Blues for the Martyrs and Composition. “My life is full of folktales and legends – art comes from thoughts and memories,” says Kamala.

The artist’s potent words are mirrored by QASIMI’s earthly colour palette, rooted in the hues of the sun, sand and sky. Light blues, bright whites, bark browns and zingy yellows are grounded by shades of concrete grey, white lead and black.

Offering an artisanal blend of modernity and classicism, SS24 exercises two concepts: the first being beading and transparency, with the second centring around portraits and embroidery. New techniques like silk printing and embroidery are embraced this season, while the art of flou permeates both menswear and womenswear, juxtaposing cotton tailoring, technical wools and lightweight cotton with floaty layers of printed silk and organic poplin.

Building on the foundation blocks of QASIMI’s ‘Permanent’ collection, this offering fuses raw-edged sweatshirts and denim blazers with organza coats and printed silks. Cubic embellishment acts as another avenue for play, as clear embroidery comes in the form of strung-together cubic beads

BIG SCREEN

Mr. & Mrs. Smith True Detective: Night Country

Need

to Know:

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is an American comedy-drama television series inspired by the 1996 series and 2005 film of the same name. We see the couple dealing with a world full of dangers, as they figure out their newly formed, unpredictable partnership.

Director: Francesca Sloane, Donald Glover

Cast: Donald Glover, Maya Erskine, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Sharon Horgan, Sarah Paulson

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Based around the action-packed 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie feature about married assassins who ultimately find themselves assigned to kill each other, this 2024 iteration, though borrowing inspiration for the basic plot structure from its well-known predecessor, now takes the liberty to tell a story that's very much its own thing. Moving away from the big screen and now presented in an eight-part TV series format, the show takes advantage of the opportunity to better flesh out the characters and their motives as the story progresses.

Donald Glover, also a co-creator of the show, and Maya Erskine partner to play the pseudonymous John and Jane Smith. They begin as two strangers who independently agree to become agents for a mysterious organisation, under the cover of a married couple. Together, they must work through missions using their espionage skills and manoeuvre tensions as their developing romantic relationship is put to the test.

Driven by clever writing and the great on-screen chemistry between Donald and Maya, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a tenaciously original take, while also honouring the original.

Need to Know:

True Detective: Night Country is the fourth season of True Detective, an American anthology crime drama television series that’s airing on HBO. The season is set in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska, and follows the investigation behind the mysterious disappearance of eight men from a research station.

Director: Issa López

Cast : Jodie Foster, Kali Reis, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star LaBlanc, John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston

Why Is It Worth Watching?

After almost five years away, the series’ longawaited fourth season has returned, this time taking place in the harsh Arctic region of Alaska, far away from the hot and sweaty settings of earlier seasons.

The plot kicks off in the town of Ennis, where eight men working at the Tsalal Research Station unexpectedly disappear, leaving no trace at the scene, except for a woman's severed tongue. On investigation, Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) deduces that it belongs to an Indigenous woman. Trooper Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) believes the victim to be Anne Kowtok, an Iñupiat woman who was stabbed to death and her tongue cut out after protesting the construction of a local mine; the case remains unsolved after six years.

While Chief Danvers attempts to uncover a possible connection between Anne and one of the researchers, she gets news that a woman living on the edge of town has discovered the bodies of the researchers. How? She claims the spirit of a dead relative guided her to the spot. Raising only more questions about what's truly happening here?

COSY MYSTERY, THRILLER How To Solve Your Own Murder

When something is described as just waiting for fans of Knives Out and The Thursday Murder Club, how could we not?

In 1965, teenager Frances Adams is shocked when a fortune-teller predicts that she’ll be murdered. Obsessed, she spends the next 60 years attempting to solve the anticipated crime.

In the present day, great niece Annie Adams has been summoned to her aunt’s country estate. But, too late, Frances has indeed been murdered before she arrives.

Since Frances has spent years digging up secrets, it’s no surprise that Annie encounters numerous suspects in her search for the killer.

Phasor is the eighth studio album by the notably innovative Helado Negro (Roberto Carlos Lange). The third release since his inimitably astonishing 2019 project, This Is How You Smile, do yourself a favour and give it a spin.

Phasor was recorded in Asheville, North Carolina, shortly after Helado’s move there. Deeply inspired by the Smoky Mountains and his renewed connection to nature, he manages to capture the breathtaking sights and sounds observed on long hikes and transfer those experiences into a highly imaginative soundscape for us to wander in.

On the opener, LFO (Lupe Finds Oliveros), the dreamy electronics spiritedly move alongside the galloping beat. I Just Want To Wake Up With You and Best For You And Me expresses the simplest and sweetest emotions over a cascade of breezy synths and catchy rhythms.

The tranquil atmosphere on Echo Tricks Me and Out There is only further elevated with his soothing vocals.

Embellished with tambourine shakes, 808-clicks (drum beats) and pleasing chords, Wish You Could Be Here beckons you to dance.

Helado manages to, once again, capture the complexities of human emotions and uniquely express them on Phasor

What Now is the second solo album from the former Alabama Shakes singersongwriter, Brittany Howard. She reunites with Shawn Everett, who first collaborated with her as an engineer on Alabama Shakes’ S ound & Color, to help co-produce here. What Now is an absolute treat, with Brittany unleashing her impressively complex vocal harmonies, combined with her standout instrumentation choices over 12 songs that are jazzy, upbeat and oh so funky!

“Out there, there’s a love waiting for me” sings Howard on the first track Earth Sign The follow up I Don’t, sees her smoothly step into groovy Motown territory.

While the richness of rhythm and funk on the title track What Now is mesmerising. The jazz drumming on Red Flags starts off slow, then crescendos with Brittany's vocals shimmering over everything.

To Be Still let's everyone take a breather for a moment, then slowly breaks into a tight breakbeat, with vocals following. The next track Another Day brings the funk and franticness back in a big way. Brittany belts the catchy refrain on house music inspired Prove It To You, which is sure to leave you tapping your feet and, like most of this sensational album, have you wishing you were on a dancefloor.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Boogie In The Bathroom

What do you do if you’re a common or garden convenience store, possibly with nothing much to recommend you other than, well, being convenient? Obviously, you provide your customers with a big button on the wall with a sign that says, ‘Do Not Push This Button’ and wait to see what happens. This was the scenario in the washrooms at one such store in Kentucky, USA and, human nature being as it is, it wasn’t long before the button was, indeed,

pushed. The result? A full-on disco party experience complete with coloured spotlights, mirror balls and cheesy dance music!

A store representative explained that they were looking for a unique selling point, which has now spread to several other branches. And we reckon this sounds like a great fun marketing idea. Who doesn’t want to dance in the bathroom while attending to business? On the other hand, all those flashing lights and loud disco tunes could just scare the **** out of you!

A Win-Win Situation Mind Your Language

Aside from the car crash (pun totally intended) that is Christian Horner’s personal and professional life as we go to press, the big story in the run up to the Formula One Bahrain season opener was Sir Lewis (we love him) Hamilton’s upcoming move to Ferrari.

The British driver has been with Mercedes AMG for 11 years, this is his 12th season, and it initially came as a shock to learn his contract was short-term, which makes the move possible. Ferrari’s shares jumped and the company saw a massive

rise in value. And, it must be said, Lewis did rather well out of the deal too. In fact, it seemed the only loser was Mercedes with fans questioning why they would let their star go so easily. However, it’s now emerged that there was, indeed, method in Toto Wolff’s madness. The team principal explained that Mercedes had made the move to guard against potentially losing out on upcoming driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Apparently, a similar situation arose in regard to the young Max Verstappen, and we all know how that turned out.

As dedicated wordsmiths, we’re always learning new things and there is often discussion in the office on current meanings. One such happened this week as we were doing a little research about the lovely Chef CZN Burak. It turns out that the social media sensation – he has almost 55 million followers on Instagram – was once known as Smiley Bae, and it’s easy to see why, he is indeed very smiley. However, being ever inquisitive, we got to talking about the meaning of Bae. Some thought it was a shortened term for baby or babe, others were convinced it had something to do with Beyonce, who is

known as Queen Bey but also sometimes as Bae. All very confusing until one of our number informed us that BAE is, in fact, an acronym for Before Anyone Else. From the sublime to the ridiculous, we then surmised it would be possible for someone to be the OG GOAT BAE – for those not in the know, that means Original Gangster (or gangsta!), Greatest Of All Time, Before Anyone Else.

Language is certainly a beautiful, ever evolving thing. That being said, we still don’t understand Salt Bae – he surely can’t be the first person who ever put salt on a piece of meat?
