Feel The Love

It’s February, which, of course, means our thoughts turn to love – whether that be significant others, objects of, as yet, unrequited affection, friends, family or, in my case, my four-legged best mate. Yes, we should be good, kind and thoughtful all year round – polish up that halo folks – but February is a time when we make a special effort to do something nice for those we hold dear. From gifts to dates, we’ve given it some serious thought and we’ve got you covered in our main feature.

Our second feature takes a look at some of the great gadgets we spotted at the Consumer Electronics Show which happens every year in Las Vegas and attracts some outlandishly cookie ideas – that we’ll all be clamouring for in a couple of years (or even months).

This month, we also announce the nominations for the Fact Dining Awards and we’ve been eating our way around the country in preparation – I must say, this is one of my favourite times of the year, except that all that delicious food leading up to a ceremony that requires a posh dress does lead to a bit of a conflict!

For our motoring feature this month, one of my lucky colleagues headed off to the UAE to check out the latest offering from Jeep. Another hopped on a plane to the Maldives for our travel feature – nope, not jealous at all. They both had great fun, so make sure you check out those pages.

Elsewhere we’ve got our usual roundups of news from the worlds of fashion and entertainment as well as lots of good stuff happening around Qatar. Happy reading all, with love from us to you.

RIDERS ON THE STORM

CHI Al Shaqab is to showcase an exciting mix of equestrian sport and entertainment in Doha.

Top-ranking local and international equestrian athletes will be competing at the 10th edition of the Commercial Bank CHI Al Shaqab Presented by Longines. The event, which is one of five annual CHI (Concours Hippique International) competitions around the world, will take place from February 23 to 25, at the world-famous Al Shaqab Equestrian Center. It will be supported by Commercial Bank as its title sponsor, Longines as the presenting partner and main sponsor ExxonMobil. The equestrian athletes will contend in the Olympic disciplines of show jumping, dressage and para-dressage, which will showcase the special bond that develops between a horse and a rider and the exceptional performances it can produce at such an elite level.

This year’s event has noted a growing number of participants of both horses and riders from across the Middle East, which has been an encouraging sign for the organisers since the exciting competition at CHI Al Shaqab can only be enhanced by added local interest in the fortunes of top equestrians from around the Arab world.

Speaking on this year’s competition, Al Shaqab Executive Director Khalifa Al Attiya, said: “We at Al Shaqab, and indeed the entire

Qatari nation, are proud and honoured to host this big event which is now established as a highlight of the global equestrian sports calendar.

“As the most celebrated competition of its kind in the Middle East and Asia regions, CHI Al Shaqab brings together those riders and horses who stand at the pinnacle of their disciplines. This year, once again we will deliver a festival of extraordinarily high-quality sport, as well as cultural, educational, and family entertainment activities for guests of all ages. We look forward to welcoming everyone.”

Joseph Abraham, Group Chief Executive Officer, Commercial Bank, said: “We are pleased to be the title sponsor for the fourth consecutive year of this premier equestrian event.

“We are dedicated to supporting Qatar's aspirations of becoming a premier international sports hub and we recognise the significance of sports in shaping Qatar's economy and international presence.” ✤ GO:

READY TO EXPO

Qatar is preparing to host another major global event – Expo 2023 Doha.

Following the major success of the recent FIFA World Cup, Qatar has already set its sights on hosting another significant global event, as preparations are on track to invite the world once again to its shores. This time to experience Expo 2023 Doha, the first International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH)-approved A1 World Horticultural Expo in the Middle East.

An international delegation of AIPH officials visited multiple locations over a few days as they toured the capital to assess its readiness to host the Expo 2023 Doha, which is to be held later this year from October 2 to March 28, 2024. The event will occupy 1.7 million square metres and will be divided into three zones – International, Family and Cultural. It is expected to attract around three million visitors. More than 50 countries have already signed up to participate and organisers hope that number will reach 80 before the official launch.

Held under the theme Green Desert, Better Environment, it aims to encourage sustainable innovation and reduce desertification. It will inspire visitors to take part in the change through four sub-themes: Modern Agriculture; Technology and Innovation; Environmental Awareness; and Sustainability.

There will be myriad activities, entertainment and edutainment for all visitors, including ministers and official delegations, as well as business visitors, horticulture

aficionados, tourists, families and children.

The visiting AIPH delegation checked on the progress made by the Ministry of Municipality, which included the first-ever tour of Expo House, the unique legacy building for Expo 2023 Doha. The delegation was also able to evaluate the development of infrastructure elsewhere in Al Bidda Park, which will be the home of Expo 2023 Doha. Ambassador Bader Al Dafa, Expo 2023 Doha Commissioner General, said: “It has been an honour to welcome the President of AIPH and his delegation to Qatar. We have successfully demonstrated that we are ready to host this prestigious event with more than 50 countries already signed up to participate.”

Tim Briercliffe, AIPH Secretary General, said “With the theme of Green Desert, Better Environment, this Expo will lead the way in bringing the countries of the world together to showcase ideas and solutions for the future while at the same time creating an unmissable visitor experience. It has been encouraging to see all the preparation work completed and underway and I know that Expo 2023 Doha Qatar will become an event for Qatar to be proud of long into the future.” ✤

ACTS OF LOVE

It’s that time of year when our thoughts turn to love and, whether you’re just starting out as a couple or in a long-term partnership, it’s the perfect excuse to plan a really amazing date to show that special someone just how much you care. We’ve come up with our Fantastic Five ideas for dates with a difference.

The Way To The Heart

There’s an old saying that the way to a man’s (or woman’s) heart is through his stomach. And how better to discover that route than with a cooking class, learning to prepare fabulous food and then eating it? The Cooking Academy offers both group and individual classes and, if you fancy learning to cook celeb-style, Nobu also has regular classes as does Al Messila Resort & Spa.

Can’t Escape That Loving Feeling

There’s nothing like sharing a difficult task to encourage bonding. So how about an escape room, where you have to work together to solve puzzles to unlock the door. We’ve previously tried, and loved, Virtuocity, which has a range of experiences – be warned, some of them are pretty scary. We also hear good things about Escape Rooms Qatar.

Moving In Rhythm

Couples are rarely closer than when they dance together and, if the success of dance-based TV shows is anything to go by, it’s

a popular pastime. Even if you’ve got two left feet, your partner will definitely appreciate the effort if you suggest taking a dance class together. Who knows, you might surprise yourself. Salsa N Candela can help you get moving, with the added bonus of Latin rhythms.

Desert By Night

There can be few things more romantic than an evening under the wide, starlit, desert skies. Take a desert safari: visit a camel camp and ride a ship of the desert; go dune bashing and sandboarding and visit the Khor Al Udaid inland sea. There are numerous companies offering evening trips and it’s an experience not to be missed.

Get Away

Head to Qatar’s northeast coast Bin Ghannam or Purple Island. Famous for its natural beauty and exotic flora and fauna. Take a picnic and enjoy the peace and quiet. it’s the perfect place to get away from it all for a few hours of alone time… do we sense a proposal coming on?

OPERATIONAL ADVANTAGE LIMITLESS ACCESSIBILITY

A smart robotic wearable suit that helps create safer workplaces.

Sony has revealed a highly customisable accessibility controller for players with disabilities

German Bionic, a robotics firm and the world’s first company to deliver connected exoskeletons for the workplace, showcased the sixth generation of its exoskeleton development with the Apogee. The Apogee is a strikingly designed next-generation smart robotic wearable tool that’s AI-supported and built for long-term use at the workplace. It provides support during lifting and walking, for up to 30kg when handling heavy loads.

The Apogee is best utilised in tasks involving lifting, unloading, static holds and walking, resulting in added energy and relief to its wearers.

Designed to be lighter and more comfortable than its predecessors, the Apogee broadens the areas of its application at the workplace and protects the health and wellbeing of workers by providing additional tools to add relief, support and safety to frequent, labour-intensive tasks.

The device works by being attached onto the back and thighs and is easy to use and unobtrusive, while allowing for no disruption to natural movements or workflows.

The exoskeleton suits are fully connected and provide users and businesses access to real-time data in order to aid in safety management and further optimise functional capabilities. Businesses can monitor device usage and safety practices through German Bionic’s IO insight platform.

The Apogee can also be customised with accessories tailored to cater to a specific team’s requirements. ✤

With the aim of making the PlayStation 5 an accessible platform to everyone, Sony unveiled the much-awaited adaptable controller codenamed Project Leonardo for gamers with limited motor control.

It is Sony’s first foray into accessible gaming equipment and has been developed with key contributions from accessibility experts, community members and game developers.

Project Leonardo is a highly customisable controller kit that works ‘out of the box’ to help players with disabilities play games more easily, comfortably and for longer periods.

Accessibility experts and charities such as AbleGamers, Special Effect and Stack Up, that are dedicated towards inclusion and support of gamers with disabilities, were consulted in the design process of this highly configurable controller. It works in tandem with many third-party accessibility accessories and integrates with the PS5 console to open up new ways of gaming.

Project Leonardo’s design choices address common challenges faced by many players with limited motor control, including difficulty holding a controller for long periods, accurately pressing small clusters of buttons or triggers or positioning thumbs and fingers optimally on a standard controller.

The controller includes a robust kit of swappable components, including a variety of analogue stick caps and buttons in different shapes and sizes. Players can use these components to craft a wide array of control layouts to suit their preference. These components allow players to find a configuration that works best for their strength, range of motion and specific physical needs. ✤

GE Profile’s new smart mixer brings top-of-theline innovation to baking.

A futuristic health tracker from the comfort of your home's bathroom.

Are you a serious baker? Then the new GE Profile Smart Stand Mixer deserves your attention. Launched at CES 2023, the mixer comes with the latest technology to deliver smart solutions and efficiency in the kitchen.

The mixer includes features such as a ‘Built-in Smart Scale’ to precisely weigh ingredients directly in the mixing bowl, so users can ensure exact measurements without the need for additional equipment.

The Auto Sense Technology works with built-in recipes in the SmartHQ app. It actively monitors changes in texture and viscosity through motor torque feedback to optimise mixing, whipping and emulsifying performance. There’s an automatic shutoff feature when the timer ends, for extra convenience and perfectly executed recipes.

The advanced digital brushless motor has been engineered to run at low temperatures and generates consistent high power to mix through the toughest batches without stalling.

The mixer can be voice-activated to connect to Alexa or Google Home and use voice commands for hands-free operation. Further, users can read every detail at a glance with a unique front-facing digital display that shows the speed, time and weight of ingredients. Included with the GE Profile Smart Mixer, the SmartHQ app has more than a dozen guided recipes that offer step-by-step instructions connected to the mixer to take users through the entire process seamlessly. ✤

Ever wondered if it was possible to get health data by carrying out a basic bodily function multiple times a day? U-Scan, a new product category at technology company Withings, helps unlock a wealth of health information via a regular at-home urine analysis.

The U-Scan is a versatile cartridge-based platform that has to be placed inside users’ toilets. It then detects, measures and analyses multiple biomarkers in urine, and sends the results to their phone on the company’s accompanying mobile app via wi-fi.

The device is splash and water resistant and urine or toilet pollutants cannot penetrate to the inside. Additionally, the product’s surface has been designed to be rinsed with each toilet flush, just like the ceramic of the toilet bowl.

The technologically advanced pebble-shaped reader has interchangeable analysis cartridges that are designed to assess specific biomarkers without the need for external sample capture or strips.

The data capture is non-invasive, effortless, hands-free and automatic. Each cartridge lasts three months and can easily be changed to meet the users’ needs.

U-Scan has a Cycle Sync cartridge, which is an automatic hormonal-based cycle tracking solution, that provides accurate and hygienic urine testing for women. Giving them personalised insights to help build a cycle-adapted health routine without the mental load that accompanies most menstrual tracking.

With the Nutri Balance cartridge, it evaluates the impact nutrition and water intake has on users’ metabolism and accordingly suggests improvements and actionable insights like workouts, recipes and tips to help achieve users’goals. ✤

TRANSMISSION UNLEASHED MOBILITY REIMAGINED

LG reveals the world’s first wireless TV.

Sony and Honda have revealed a new prototype EV for their joint venture car brand.

The new LG Signature OLED M3 comes with Zero Connect technology. This allows for superior picture and sound quality transmission wirelessly; a separate Zero Connect box can send real-time audio and video up to 4K HDR 120Hz from up to 10 metres away. Further, it provides greater flexibility when installing and connecting – the 97-inch panel requires only a regular power cable connection.

The Zero Connect box comes with multiple ports for plugging in commonly used HDMI devices, such as cable/satellite set-top boxes and gaming consoles. It can also connect wirelessly with compatible soundbars for additional cable-free convenience. To ensure the seamless transfer of data from the box to the TV, LG has developed an algorithm that instantly identifies the optimal transmission path. The algorithm also helps to minimise transmission errors or disruptions as it can recognise changes in the immediate environment, such as people or pets moving around the room, and switch paths accordingly.

Additionally, for maximum signal strength, the Zero Connect box’s antenna can be easily rotated and/or tilted to align with the TV’s location.

For maximum usability, the box is voice-recognition enabled, allowing users to turn on and manage the M3 and connected devices using simple, spoken commands. ✤

THE ALL-NEW GRAND WAGONEER UNVEILED

FACT attended the launch of the 2023 Grand Wagoneer, cruising all the way to Fujairah City, UAE, in this iconic American SUV.

This month, we were fortunate enough to be invited by the multinational automotive manufacturing corporation, Stellantis, to attend the launch of the legendary Grand Wagoneer, at Ceasars Palace Dubai, on Bluewater Island. We would like to thank Stellantis and United Cars Almana for their wonderful hospitality and for the opportunity to experience the new Grand Wagoneer in such a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Exterior

The moment the full-sized SUV was unveiled, we could see that the 2023 Grand Wagoneer is a modern interpretation of an American-made icon. The exceptional craftsmanship that has gone into the design of this striking vehicle was immediately obvious to all in attendance.

The Grand Wagoneer’s bold new exterior design has been crafted with a wide stance and features a classic yet refined silhouette. At the imposing front end sits a distinctive hood and prominent front grille combination, the latter featuring knurled finishes on the rings. Complementing these grand features is the unique LED lighting, including premium LED headlamps and foglamps. Shifting to the flanks, we could see that, like the windscreen, large windows have been incorporated into the design, greatly enhancing outward visibility. Paying homage to the original

Grand Wagoneer are the clean roofline and A-line that run around the vehicle in its entirety. A panoramic tri-pane sunroof allows an abundance of natural light inside the vehicle and offers greenhouse-like views. Chunky, 22-inch aluminium wheels add to the SUV’s rugged appearance and hint at its off-road capabilities. At the rear, LED taillamps complete the full suite of exterior LED lights, stretching from the rear quarter panels to the hands-free power liftgate.

Interior

On entering the SUV, we were immediately taken by the abundance of space on offer. In fact, the 2023 Grand Wagoneer boasts the best-in-class overall passenger volume, amongst many other bragging rights.

The fully digital cockpit is jam packed with cutting-edge tech, is immaculately laid out and features comfortable captain’s chairs. The second-row seating also features captain’s chairs, access to which is made simple by the power release Tip ‘n Slide function that creates more space for passengers to get to their seats. The third row can recline and fold flat, making it easy to configure for either passengers or luggage.

This convenient internal setup, coupled with the four-zone HVAC system, ensured we were completely relaxed, cool and comfortable as we set off on the three-hour test drive to Fujairah City.

Infotainment & Technology

As we effortlessly cruised en-route to our destination, we had time to take in the seemingly endless cutting-edge tech, housed in the interior of this remarkable SUV.

The 2023 Grand Wagoneer is equipped with next-generation innovations including the new advanced Uconnect 5 system. Other notable features include a frameless digital cluster, a rear seat monitoring camera and a premium McIntosh audio system. Additionally, we were informed that this new model is available with up to 75 inches of total digital display screen area, including nearly 45 inches of total screens along the front dashboard. We found the 12-inch reconfigurable touchscreen display with split-screen capabilities to be most impressive. This setup features the before mentioned, all-new Uconnect 5 system and includes wi-fi capability, full smartphone connectivity, Alexa, access to hundreds of thousands of apps, TV shows and movies, amongst many other great options. In addition 11 USB ports, and multiple passenger screens are located in both the front and the rear.

Safety

The artisans responsible for the Grand Wagoneer’s design have included an extensive range of leading-edge safety technologies and driver assistance systems. These include a head-up display (HUD), hands free active driving assist, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, intersection collision assist and drowsy driver detection, along with turn-by-turn navigation and much, much more. The fully digital rear view mirror provides an unobstructed view of the road behind and can revert to a traditional reflective mirror by toggling the switch underneath.

Performance

The 2023 model is powered by a new 3.0-litre Hurricane twinturbo, incline, six-cylinder engine, combined with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. Cruising along, the abundance of power and acceleration on offer was made obvious, as we witnessed the SUV effortlessly eat up the freeway all the way to Fujairah City.

Although we couldn’t fully test the vehicle’s 4x4 capabilities on this excursion, we were informed that this model has three available 4x4 systems, along with an available Quadra-Lift air suspension and Selec-Terrain traction management system. This means there is almost no off-road terrain that this premium SUV cannot conquer. Any other SUV in this segment would have a tough time keeping up with it in the rough. ✤

A DIGITAL EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE

BMW i Vision Dee is the futuristic mid-size sedan with a new and pared-down design language. The name Dee stands for Digital Emotional Experience – and that is precisely its aim: to create an even stronger bond between people and their cars.

The BMW Head-Up-Display extends across the full width of the windscreen, providing a glimpse of the next vehicle generation. From 2025 onwards, this innovation will be available in the models of the NEUE KLASSE.

The BMW Group has also refined its use of colour-change technology. Having unveiled the BMW iX Flow Featuring E Ink, with the ability to change from black to white. BMW i Vision Dee can now curate its exterior in up to 32 colours.

The BMW Mixed Reality Slider, in combination with the advanced Head-up Display, is the digital highlight and central operating control of BMW i Vision Dee. Using shy-tech sensors on the instrument panel, drivers can decide for themselves how much digital content they want to see on the advanced Head-Up Display in a five-step selection range from analogue to virtual worlds. Dimmable windows can also be used to gradually fade out reality Projection across the entire width of the windscreen allows information to be displayed on the largest possible surface –which only becomes recognisable as a display once it is activated. In this way, the BMW Group demonstrates the huge potential of projection technology and BMW i Vision Dee visualises how an advanced Head-Up-Display could also be utilised in the future for the display and operating concept. The standard-production version of the BMW Head-up-Display extending across the full width of the windscreen will be used in the models of the NEUE

KLASSE from 2025 onwards.

The digital experience begins outside the vehicle, with a personalised welcome scenario that combines graphical elements, light and sound effects. The headlights and the closed BMW kidney grille also form a common phygital (fusion of physical and digital) icon on a uniform surface, allowing the vehicle to produce different facial expressions! This means BMW i Vision Dee can talk to people and, at the same time, express moods such as joy, astonishment or approval visually. BMW i Vision Dee can also project an image of the driver’s avatar onto the side window to further personalise the welcome scenario.

The design of BMW i Vision Dee has been deliberately pared down to focus attention on the digital experience. The exterior is defined by the classic three-box saloon design that forms the core of the BMW brand. Traditional design elements are reimagined, with phygital icons replacing analogue elements.

Inside, digitalisation goes hand in hand with reductive use of materials, operating controls and displays to ensure nothing distracts from the digital experience. The unconventional design of the steering wheel, with its central vertical spoke, creates touchpoints that come to life when approached or touched and can be operated by moving the thumb. These phygital touchpoints control selection of the content projected onto the windscreen and, together with the Head-Up Display, thus support the principle of ‘hands on the wheel, eyes on the road’. ✤

fact magazine 46 • PLUGGED IN

In Conversation with… Fabian Amici

What first attracted you to the hospitality and food and beverage sector?

I always had a drive to be with people and make them feel good around me in whatever situation. I would describe myself as a highenergy guy. After school, I didn’t see myself working in a closed space. I read an article about a famous GM from Kempinski Hotels and that was it. I wanted to achieve the same goals: travel, run restaurants, be involved with entertainment, to feel that pressure and thrill at the same time, live within different cultures and lead people to success. Food and beverage (F&B) was an easy choice for me. Being Italian, we have always had a close relationship with

food and drinks. I needed a dynamic, fast-paced environment that differs every day, depending on the guests or the situation. This is what, for me, is the thrilling part of the F&B industry.

You have come to Qatar as the opening GM for Roberto’s Doha. What were the challenges in the pre-opening period and how have you dealt with these?

Challenges are found everywhere, no matter what your new assignment is. However, this pre-opening was special. The World Cup around the corner, the restaurant yet to be completed, the unknown impact the biggest event in the world would have on

fact magazine 48 • 5 OVER 5
The Restaurant General Manager of Roberto’s Doha talks transmitting his passion and people-oriented leadership.

the restaurant. I had to adapt very fast to learn how things are dealt with here in Qatar, especially when you are moving from a hotel career to a stand-alone concept. Everything, all my tasks were multiplied by double in terms of planning, executing and finding the right solutions or alternatives. Empowering and trusting people around me as much as possible was how I overcame the pre-opening stage – with stress but very proud to have opened such a beautiful venue as Roberto’s. Finally, I have the luck to be surrounded by people working within the brand that always supported me and believed in me.

How have you gone about building your team and what do you think is the most important message/training that you can impart to them?

People are the most important asset for any business. They are the stars of the show and without them you cannot run it. Considering myself as a very people-oriented leader, I like to be with them in the daily operations, giving feedback and transmitting my passion to them. I think the most important thing is to keep them motivated and try to unleash their knowledge. Also, sharing my knowledge with the team and actively listening to their thoughts and feedback is the key to having a well synchronised and powerful team.

What would you say makes Roberto’s unique in the truly diverse Qatar dining scene?

Roberto’s is a unique and breathtaking venue, in terms of interior design and diversity of experiences that we can offer to our guests. Each area of the venue has been custom made. From a

classic setting for a fine-dining environment to our lounge and bar area with a décor style reminiscent of the roaring ‘20s, yet with a modern touch.

For any type of occasion, Roberto’s has the answer. When you pair our mixologist programme with our quality of products chosen with care for our traditional, yet contemporary Italian cuisine, you are in the right place. Roberto’s represents a unique lifestyle venue, guaranteeing exceptional cuisine, tunes, drinks and unmatched attention to detail. This place gives me goosebumps and at the same time it also gives me lots of energy.

As a fairly recent arrival in the country, what are three things you have discovered about Qatar that you would share with visitors?

In the first place, Doha is a vibrant capital, with the Souq Waqif where you discover tradition. Doha by night reveals its beauty and the stunning architecture, such as the National Museum, shows that architecture does not know any boundaries. The whole city is breath-taking, it captures you. I like the overall concept in terms of architecture and facilities.

Second, you have the sea, which is always a great asset for a city and a country. You can explore the coastline on a dhow, take trips or choose a nice place for snorkelling, diving, swimming and fishing. The third thing to share with visitors is the great nature, for example the reserve Khor Al-Adaid which is on UNESCO’s world heritage list. The desert with the dunes is always something special. Watching the sunset on a camel’s back, taking part in a dune walk, these are things I have put on my list to do and I’d like to share them with as many visitors possible. ✤

CREATED FOR QATAR

Thierry Motsch, Head Chef at L’Artisan, Raffles Doha, explains his culinary inspirations and aspirations for this unique venue.

fact magazine 50 • CHEF IN FOCUS

You have worked with some of the best in the business, Michelin-starred culinary heroes from Alain Ducasse to Yannick Alleno. You also apprenticed with Chef Christian Moine. How will you translate all this top-level experience to the kitchens at L’Artisan while also stamping your own style and authority? Working with Michelin-starred chefs gave me, early on, the will to succeed by discipline, motivation and the desire to push myself further, to be totally responsive and a team leader and those are certainly attributes that I hope I bring to L’Artisan. To achieve the standard of excellence that comes with a Michelin star, kitchens have to run like well-oiled machinery with everyone working as part of a tightly-knit team and totally in-sync with each other and that’s the type of operation we have at L’Artisan. But one thing all Michelin-star mentors encourage is signature creativity – those famous chefs have all developed their own styles, borne out of a love of their craft and a curiosity to push the boundaries further. That’s what I endeavour to achieve at L'Artisan and what I also wish to encourage within my team.

What is it about L’Artisan that made you want to come to Doha?

Initially, the Raffles brand, an iconic hotel opening, and the opportunity to experience the Middle East attracted me. But I was also thrilled by the freedom to create menus which could appeal to a culture new to me. L’Artisan is a celebration of modern dining for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It was a blank canvas. I introduced dishes which are delicately finished off at the table in front of diners, by adding a swirl of sauce or jus. I have combined classics, such as sole meuniere, with modern signatures, like veal tomahawk enlivened with a sweet orange harissa and a crispy olive pastilla. We’ve even refined breakfasts. Our breakfast menu is bursting with sweet and savoury temptations. Eggs, for

instance, are served with asparagus soldiers and our French toast is enriched with apples, cinnamon and gingerbread ice-cream. Our name suggests what we are: artisanal culinary creatives who push artistic boundaries.

Still in your 30s, you have come a long way in a short time. To what do you attribute your early and ongoing success?

I have a strong desire for adventure and am endlessly curious. That is what led me to becoming a head chef on cruise ships, which brought its own rewards in that it changed my management style and opened my eyes to the importance of team well-being. It also taught me how to work within a very diverse team in terms of nationality spread – which again brings a lot of different culinary influences into play. That spirit of adventure also led me here to the Middle East, where I hope to pass on some knowledge but also learn some of the culinary delights of the region which could influence my future creations. From a very young age, I wanted to be a successful chef and that made me push to secure positions where I could learn from the best. My determination to keep on learning and growing continues until today.

What is your signature dish and what makes it popular?

Lamb and Foie Gras became my signature dish and emerged from my own cultural immersion in the Middle East, which loves lamb, and my national exposure to French and European tastes and aesthetics. The dish is a delicious taste pairing which combines culinary techniques I have learned over the years working with some of the best chefs in Europe with the tastes and requirements of the local clientele here in Doha. I suppose in a way this dish has come home to the region of its birth after all Foie Gras is a delicacy which originated in Ancient Egypt and the region’s love for lamb needs no further explanation from me. ✤

Gaurav Prakash Executive Pastry Chef JW Marriott Marquis City Center Doha talks inspirations and beautiful creations.

What first drew you to the pastry side of the culinary profession?

Becoming a chef runs in the family as two of my family members are already in the same profession and are settled successfully abroad. The story of turning my passion into a profession started during my first interview with Chef Ranveer Brar, one of the world’s most renowned celebrity chefs. During this interview, even though my initial preference was Indian cuisine, he suggested that I joined the pastry department, Chocolate Section. From that moment onwards, and to my surprise, it all felt right, my creativity was unlocked and I was on a clear path to pursuing a career I always dreamed of. It was the best of both worlds for me.

What or who inspires you in creating beautiful new confectioneries?

In order to grow into something amazing or to achieve something meaningful in life, the foundation that you lay has to be strong. For me this foundation was laid right after this first interview, with me joining the pastry team headed by Chef Saurabh Shahi, who became my mentor. He taught me how to give more than 100% to everything that I do, always to push the boundaries of my capabilities and how perseverance always pays off. These initial values that were imparted to me at the very beginning of my career have inspired me and my creativity in the best possible way.

You’ve mentioned involvement in developing gluten-free, diabetic and healthy desserts. Please explain how you go about this, particularly when items such as gluten can have very serious health consequences if taken in error.

I have been gathering knowledge and working on making desserts suitable for all, so that people who have dietary restrictions such as gluten-free, sugar-free or just target a healthier lifestyle, can still enjoy and satisfy their sweet tooth without compromising their health or taste at any given time. I have been diligent in making a dessert that does not contain any white sugar, which means substituting it with the healthier option such as agave syrup which is safe to be consumed by everyone. For the past two years at JW Marriott Marquis City Center Doha, we have managed to successfully launch a healthy food programme with guilt-free options that helps guests with dietary restrictions to enjoy more, being able to create over 1,000 recipes.

What is your signature dish and what makes it popular?

Golden Chocolate Soufflé! Yes, that’s the name of my signature dessert which is served in La Maison Martinez at JW Marriott Marquis City Center Doha. It’s a mesmerising combination of hot and cold, a pure hit. The dish is a 72% cocoa soufflé with edible gold on top, served with homemade rose ice cream. The uniqueness of the dessert is that it is served with the liquid nitrogen-dipped young pink rose which is fascinating to the eyes and gives an illusion-like effect. A true must try!! ✤

THE BEST OF BBQ

Amica Sicilia got a taste of the Silk Road at the new BBQ Lunch which is taking place every Friday at Mosaic restaurant, Mandarin Oriental, Doha.

Some two millennia ago envoys of China’s powerful Han emperor ventured west until they reached the borders of the wealthy Parthian empire, which stretched from what is now Afghanistan right to the edge of the Mediterranean. The meeting unleashed an explosion of trade: in spices, porcelain, horses and camels, gold and, above all, silk. The Silk Roads spun their web of economic and cultural exchange from Shanghai and Osaka to Constantinople and Rome. Today a traveller could spend a lifetime retracing those silken threads – or you could do what we did, and let your taste buds make the journey through the flavours of the continents in the course of one wonderful afternoon. This is the concept behind the newest dining offering from the masters of luxury hospitality at the Mandarin Oriental, Doha, with the Silk Road-inspired Friday BBQ lunch at Mosaic. The restaurant itself is simultaneously calmly elegant and quietly bustling with activity. To our right, floor to ceiling windows and a bright terrace offer views over the cream marble of central Msheireb. Our table is shaded by geometric screens in light wood and intricately worked metal, creating privacy while preserving the airy lightness, while furnishings in cream and sea blue recall woven palm leaves and the interlock of traditional pearling nets. To our left is a hive of energy, where delicious aromas plume from nine open kitchens manned by chefs who are experts in specialist cuisines from Yakitori to Rotisserie via the Tandoor. We are welcomed by manager Suhrob Hojiev, with a cool ruby-red glass of pomegranate and hibiscus tea, sweetened with strawberry and playfully finished with baby mint leaves. We dip squares of crisp and fluffy focaccia, the dough fragrant with thyme and rosemary, into salty black olive tapenade as we prepare ourselves for our culinary voyage.

fact magazine 55 CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

We decide that like the legendary silk itself, we should start in the east and move westwards. All of Mosaic’s sushi is freshly assembled on the spot. We are particularly impressed by the freshness and tenderness of the deep red tuna sashimi, which melts in the mouth. And their culinary creativity is on full display with a roll of Wagyu beef, crispy fried shitake mushroom and teriyaki – an umami explosion.

We move on. The steam issuing from fragrant dim sum baskets is too inviting to ignore. Inside, like treasure chests, they reveal puffy bao buns full of sweet char siu chicken, translucent green vegetable dumplings and seafood siu mai. Beside these, the noodle station boasts everything from thick satisfying udon to thin glass vermicelli. We admire the chef’s wok skills as he combines fresh greens, rice noodles and tiny red shrimp with aromatic tamarind and fish sauce. With each mouthful the flavours go from sweet, to sour, to salty, balanced with bright lime juice. In front of the bakery are towers of fresh bread of every shape and size, flavoured with sesame, with gruyere cheese or dried fruit. Beside them, cheeses and cold cuts are as abundant as they are immaculately presented: rosettes of bresaola cradled with sprigs of rosemary and black olives; smoked mackerel framed by the complementary flavours of orange and dill. But as we’re sizing these up a showstopping surprise arrives at our table. “Anyone for caviar?” asks Chef de Cuisine Mervan Tekin, with a huge smile. How could we say no?

It’s a precision performance. Before our eyes the lightest, crispest melba toast is topped with a slice of Norwegian smoked salmon cured with orange juice, lime zest, salt and sugar. A small spoon of snowy sour cream is carefully positioned. Over that are sprinkled chopped shallots, salty sour capers, bright chives and finely diced egg. And all this is crowned by a spoon of tiny black

pearls, the caviar of the white sturgeon, which burst against the roofs of our mouths. It’s a sensory explosion. After cleansing our palates it’s time to face the fires of the grilling stations. Again, the choice is staggering. My companion opts for seafood, choosing beautiful fat king prawns and baby white squid, individually cleaned and prepared before hissing onto the grill. I’m seduced by miniature skewers of perfectly marbled Wagyu beef and – at the other end of the scale – a magnificent whole leg of veal, roasted with rosemary and garlic and expertly carved in front of my eyes, before being bathed in a mushroom jus and served with fresh leafy greens. We feel like the emperors of old at a feast. The final stop on our journey is the dessert station that glitters with jewel colours and gold leaf, surmounted by a towering chocolate fountain pouring liquid luxury between gold cups, one side white, one dark. The chef helps us to choose a few highlights: a fragrant lavender and orange blossom almond financier cake; a darkly indulgent whipped tiramisu; macarons stuffed with fresh raspberries, perfumed with rose; and miniature Umm Ali baked milk pudding, scented with orange blossom. Our strong black espressos, paired with handmade gianduja truffles, seal the deal. As each traveller knows, every voyage must end. But it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.

The BBQ Lunch is priced at QR425 per person. Children aged seven to 12 years pay half the price at QR213 and those aged six and under go free. ✤

A NEW WORLD OF FLAVOURS

East meets West in a theatrical fine-dining experience as Amica Sicilia visits the new home of Twiga Doha

If any city can claim to be at the centre of the world, Doha has as good a claim as any. It’s at the heart of Arabia, an oasis and stopping-off place on journeys linking six continents. For evidence, look no further than what’s on your plate. This is a city where you can sample the flavours of practically any cuisine, at practically any hour of the day or night and where the flavours of those cultures meet, embrace and blend into brand-new delights before your very eyes. For a taste of this magic in action, look no further than the new Doha home of Twiga.

The restaurant and club made its name with elite locations in Monte Carlo, at Forte dei Marmi in Tuscany and in collaboration with Sumosan in London’s Knightsbridge. Now Twiga has opened its elegant doors at the heart of a new jewel in Doha’s crown, Printemps, the largest luxury department store in the Middle East. You could spend days wandering its swooping elliptical floors stacked with all that glitters. But we are here on serious business. We’re here to eat.

The corridor opens into a gently curving avenue of silk flowers, beckoning us towards our destination. Wisteria hangs garlanded from the ceiling, white and pink. Climbing wild roses curl above banks of lavender and hydrangea. Pouting tulips and delicate columbine blossom before our eyes. Inside, the restaurant is gently lit from concealed lights behind blue glass, with smoked mirrors and a ceiling in chestnut wood and pink copper. The owning company, Majestas, Luxury Hospitality Global Company led by Flavio Briatore, entrepreneur and F1 legend, was inspired by the colours and welcome of Malindi, a cosmopolitan tropical paradise on the Kenyan coast. But the menu looks even further afield, drawing from the best of both East and West in a novel and intriguing combination of the heritage of his native Italy with the nuances of New Asian cuisine.

We’re welcomed warmly by manager Johann Greef with two of Twiga’s signature mocktails. My Volare!, named for the 1958 smash-hit song by Puglian crooner Domenico Modugno, is a twist on a classic kir with sour cherry cordial blushing through the bubbles of zero-percent champagne. Sorrento meanwhile is a citrusy summer night in a glass, blending lemon, pineapple and vanilla alongside aromatic dry sage, spritzed with soda water. To show off Twiga’s strengths, head chef Murat Yilmaz has selected a trio of starters for us to sample. First up are their own handmade bao buns, the dough light and pale, sliced down the middle to be filled with a sliver of Wagyu short rib. The meat has been cooked low and slow for 24 hours in a sweet chilli soy marinade which turns it tender as caramel. Next to these are their complement, delicately pleated gyoza dumplings, filled with prawn and miso black cod, garnished with threads of red chilli. The flavours unfold in the mouth to reveal the taste of the sea. A love of seafood is something shared by the culinary traditions which inspire Twiga’s chefs, particularly Japan and Italy with their long coastlines, and the third dish drives this connection home. Octopus, gaspingly fresh, is blanched to ensure tenderness, marinated with citrus and peppers and then roasted over the hot coals of the robata or robatayaki, a Japanese barbecue developed over centuries by the fishermen of Hokkaido. The white and lilac flesh melts like butter in the mouth. I can honestly say it was the

fact magazine 59 FOODIE FOCUS •

best I have ever tasted (even better than my mother-in-law’s back in Italy, though I won’t be telling her that).

Turning back to Italy, we choose Tagliolini All’astice – a pasta cooked with cherry tomatoes, garlic, basil and the sweet indulgence of a half lobster tail. Twiga can make the rare boast in Doha of making all their pasta in-house, and their tagliolini are a square-edged ribbon pasta, vanishingly thin at less than 2mm per strand. Like angel hair, such fine noodles, especially when fresh, are fiendishly difficult to cook well, but these retain just the perfect amount of al dente bite. Funnily enough, the history of pasta is itself the ultimate fusion-food story, as most food historians agree it can trace its roots back to ancient China. Our attention is caught by a steaming, sizzling plate. Wagyu beef entrecote, generously marbled with flavourful fat and grilled to precision on the Josper, a high-tech grill which the chefs play like a piano. It’s accompanied by a contrasting duo from East and West: creamy, pungent truffle mayonnaise, next to the bright citrus and salt of Japanese ponzu sauce.

But the pièce de resistance is dessert. A wide tray arrives beside our table with a theatrical flourish. On it are a stack of savoiardi biscuits, a pillowy cloud of whipped mascarpone and two steaming moka pots. These iconic Bialetti stove-top coffee machines are found in practically every Italian kitchen and take their name from the city of Mokha on Yemen’s Red Sea coast, from where, until the 18th century, most of the world got

most of its coffee. Before our eyes, layer by layer, the delicate biscuits are rolled and soaked in espresso and placed between generous cushions of mascarpone, powdered with dark cocoa. It’s a perfect tiramisù, and the perfect end to a meeting of distant culinary worlds that perhaps only makes full sense in the cultural crossroads of Doha but here has found a natural home. ✤

A PASSAGE TO INDIA

Luke Bennett discovered bursting flavours and an authentic setting for a sub-continental journey.

Jwala’s vision is to offer guests a casual and enjoyable dining experience by creating the illusion of wandering the streets of India. The décor is a true reflection of this with vibrantly painted walls being adorned with murals of iconic, Indian images and a collection of street-themed items carefully displayed throughout the restaurant. To immerse diners even further into Indian culture, Jwala is currently hosting live music from 7pm daily (except Sundays). The band that played during our visit certainly added energy and authenticity to the evening.

Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and encouraged to select our seating preference. The tables with lounge seating were an obvious choice. However, there is the option of siting outside or in coved, semi-private areas near the back of the restaurant if dining in larger groups.

While we perused the diverse and innovative menu, a bowl of light, crispy papadums alongside an assortment of dips was delivered by our friendly and attentive waiter, Swapnil. Jwala’s menu encompasses many symbolic, authentic Indian dishes with added creative theatre and a fusion with many international cuisines. From OMG Butter Chicken Lasagne to Jwala Bunny Chow, the eclectic mix of courses certainly evokes curiosity and excitement.

With a little guidance from our waiter, we opted for a range of different dishes to start our evening. Firstly, displayed in an inverted, transparent glass was a colourful and intriguing Raita Salad. As Swapnil lifted the glass, matchsticks of cucumber spilled elegantly onto the plate, mixing with the crunchy bed of boondi and pomegranate seeds all smothered in a fresh, creamy

fact magazine 63 DINING DELIGHT •

raita sauce. Not your average salad, this dish proved to be a palate-pleasing harmony of freshness and crunch.

Served in a bronze teapot emitting steam, Rangoli Chicken Lollipops were next to arrive and, as the name suggests, four wooden sticks were wrapped in chicken breast, each coated differently with crispy Indian flakes that complemented the juicy fibres of meat. Accompanying the lollipops, were three alluring, golden samosas. Slicing through the first, perfectly fried pastry revealed a very generous serving of minced lamb that excelled on both texture and taste – only to be outdone by a warming, gooey concoction of cheddar and mozzarella that oozed from the middle of the next samosa.

Dining out with your partner or friends provides an opportunity to share and enjoy food and 65 Pizza appears to be the perfect dish for this type of occasion; however, it is so delicious that you wish you weren’t sharing it. This innovative take on a pizza starts with a soft, tearable naan base blanketed with a layer of rich tomato sauce and stringy mozzarella. Plentiful amounts of Chicken 65 and crunchy pine nuts along with drizzles of raita and mango dressings all make for delectable toppings. Each flavoursome bite of pizza just keeps bringing you back for more!

Jwala aren’t just exciting their diners with spectacular food options, they are also serving up a range of fascinating speciality drinks from Bollywood Lassi to Sholay Mojito. We opted for the latter which was a pleasurable blend of lemongrass, ginger and lime all unusually served inside a plastic bag and providing a punchy sharpness that complemented the main courses perfectly. The first of which was of course a curry, Prawn Masala Jar. Plump, juicy prawns were smothered in a creamy coconut milk and tomato gravy that had both a wonderful depth of flavour and popping freshness from the addition of peas. A light and flaky Pashawi naan filled with a substantial, crumbly spread of almonds, dried fruit and coconut, was perfect for dipping into the curry or to tear and savour alone.

Having tried the delicious Bermuda Chicken Biryani on a previous visit, I decided upon sampling the Gamla Jhad Paya Biryani, and I was not disappointed with my choice. Gamla means pot in Hindi which explains why the food arrived in a garden pot with the bone of the lamb shank protruding from the ‘soil’, a bed of black paya basmati rice. The fibres of the lamb were unbelievably tender; the rice was flavoursome with layers of soft and crispy grains permeated with a crunchy concoction of cashews, pomegranate seeds and peas. All of which made for mouthfuls of full-bodied, moreish food.

A metal stake carrying hearty chunks of succulent chicken breast announced the arrival of our final main course, Kutubminar Shawarma. Despite their impressive size, each piece of meat retained satisfying levels of moisture and they were marinated in a tantalising tikka sauce – yet another display of expertly prepared meat from Jwala’s chefs. A surrounding selection of katoris housing onions, chapati, mango pickle and tahina raita made this outstanding dish perfect for sharing.

Given the extremely generous portions of food, we didn’t really have an appetite for a dessert. Thankfully, Bubbly Papadum provided the ideal, lighter option with savoury, crisp papadums carefully stacked and layered with a combination of sweet

vanilla custard, sugary strawberry jam, and a plentiful scattering of fresh fruit. If you have a greater appetite for desserts, Jwala offers an impressive variety from traditional Gulab Jamun Bites to Rasmalai Tres Leches (a saffron infused cake which Swapnil mentioned was a top choice).

Looking for a relaxed yet memorable restaurant with outstanding food and excellent service? Then, look no further than Jwala – a contemporary, Indian establishment, ideally situated in the lively district of Medina Centrale, The Pearl. ✤

REFINED INDULGENCE

Luke Bennett discovered that Farmore Thn Burger (FTB) is a fitting name for this relaxing, stylish restaurant where they aren’t just relying on high-quality meat patties to entice diners.

Situated on the ground floor of The Marriot Executive Apartments City Center Doha, this newly opened establishment will certainly add an indulgent yet refined option to the ever-growing gastronomic scene here in Doha. The décor creates a sleek, modern diner-like ambiance that caters for all. From booth seating for a sociable, larger group to more private tables with both high-top stalls and curved, longue seats. An elongated, licensed bar adorned with cinematic and illuminated signage takes centre stage - offering guests a further option of sitting at the bar with some sharable snacks.

As we took our seats, the newly appointed manager, Rodel, spoke enthusiastically about their signature dishes and offered suggestions from the intriguing and exciting menu. From the snacking section, we opted for the Lobster and Prawn Popcorn which proved to be a great choice. Hearty, succulent pieces of meat that melted under each bite were perfectly coated in double, crispy tempura batter and lightly brushed with a punchy, tobico mayo. (Who said popcorn was only for the cinema?)

Accompanying the balls of fried deliciousness was a fresh, vibrant bowl of frisée lettuce, seaweed shards, crunchy edamame beans and a delightful mix of crab, lobster, prawn and calamari rings. The sweet, thick coriander tasuma dressing significantly heightened the pleasurable taste of the Seafood Salad. Bringing a tantalising aroma to the table was a warming pot of Lobster Bisque. Removing the lid revealed a rich, colourful tomatobased sauce submerging generous portions of lobster meat that delivered on both texture and taste. The layers of flavour within the sauce were enhanced with the addition of lobster stock and coriander and cubes of crispy croutons added both crunch and a touch of saltiness.

For the main course, they offer a range of skilfully crafted, homemade burgers and a selection of dishes that utilise the opulent ingredient, lobster. Two focus points of an outstanding burger must be the quality of both the meat patty and the bread. Our Avo Burger delivered on both fronts: the Wagyu beef patty provided a thicker grain of tasteful meat that oozed delightful levels of moisture, and the parmesan-coated brioche bun (also freshly made) held its firm shape, adding a different textural element. Topping the delectable meat were strands of crispy, salty bacon; smooth, plump wedges of avocado; and a velvety smothering of mimolette cheese.

fact magazine 67 NEW IN TOWN •

Another example of their impressive use of bread was our Spicy Brioche Roll. An expertly toasted brioche finger roll encased a creamy blend of shredded lobster and prawn, whipped with a spicy yet enjoyable chipotle mayo. Rings of sliced jalapenos and scallions added some welcome crunch and tang. A standout dish for sure! For our final main course, we were served Thermidor, a perfectly baked lobster sliced into halves. The firm yet juicy fibres of meat slid easily from the shell and were elegantly displayed upon a creamy edamame emulsion that complemented the meat perfectly. Each main course arrived with homemade, triple-cooked fries that had a satisfying, crispy exterior yet remained fluffy and light inside. If you wish, you can opt for a portion of slightly thinner and crispier sweet potato fries sprinkled with lime salt. Both options were highly enjoyable, not overly oily and supremely well-seasoned. As an additional side, I would highly recommend the Mac & Cheese. The macaroni was prepared al dente with a lightly, crisped top layer – an essential component in any mouth-watering Mac & Cheese! The considered use of parmesan and fontina resulted in a dish that had the desired, creamy texture but was not too stodgy, meaning you could keep coming back for more. Like any great diner, the dessert choices celebrate all things ice cream. The Brownie Sundae was a substantial offering of smooth, luscious vanilla ice cream with chunks of crumbly, delectable brownie and a lavish drizzling of salted caramel and Valrhona chocolate sauce that hardened to offer a pleasurable ‘snap’. Alongside the sundae sat an alternative take on a banana split.

A trio of delicious chocolate, vanilla and pistachio spheres were topped with thin slices of fresh banana and a dusting of crushed corn flakes that added a desirable crunch to the dish. As mentioned, Farmore Thn Burger are fully licensed and offer a wide range of beverages. During our evening, we sampled a couple of their skilfully curated mocktails. Firstly, Mallow Sunset gifted a vividly coloured blend of hibiscus tea, strawberry juice and homemade honey, topped with fresh sprigs of mint. The next mocktail, Basil Smash, presented a fresh mixture of basil, apple and lemon juice, soda and sugar syrup. Both beverages were highly enjoyable, not excessively sweet and complemented the food nicely.

Despite gorging on a vast range of appetizing dishes, we left without the nauseating feeling of overindulgence, and I’d attribute this to the refined nature of FTB’s dishes. Couple this with the exceptional, attentive service from Rodel and his team and you should definitely add Farmore Thn Burger to your ‘must try’ list. If these weren’t already enough reasons, they also offer multiple, impressive deals: a generous ‘Power Hour’ lasting from 12-8pm every day except Fridays; a business lunch with a twoor three-course option; and a newly launched, BBQ-style Friday brunch that I am sure will be a hit. ✤

l The BEST is decided by a panel of anonymous judges made up of industry experts, reputed bloggers and the FACT Qatar team.

l The FAVOURITE is chosen through online public voting.

l A gala awards ceremony is set to take place in May 2023 in Doha, where we will announce the winners.

l 104 category awards will be given out on the night, chosen from hundreds of nominated venues, as well as the overall BEST and FAVOURITE.

l FACT Dining Awards is part of a wider initiative by FACT M.E. with annual ceremonies across the region.

MALDIVIAN MAGIC

We visited Nova Maldives for a touch of winter warmth in a truly beautiful setting.

TRAVEL •

There are few locations on the planet that measure up to the breath-taking beauty of the Maldives. This ancient island nation is renowned for its sapphire blue waters, powdery, white beaches, green tropical forests and golden sunshine.

This month, thanks to Nova Maldives, FACT spent four magical days and nights in this extraordinary part of the world.

NOVA MALDIVES

Positioned Southwest of Sri Lanka and India, about 750 kilometres from mainland Asia, the Maldives is an archipelagic country, formed by 26 natural atolls, consisting of 1,192 islands. Nova is located on South Ari Atoll, a mere 25-minute seaplane ride from Malé International Airport. This scenic flight, although very comfortable, was too short to take in the full splendour of the surrounding views. By the time we touched down on the clear waters alongside the wooden jetty, we were relaxed and ready for our refreshing island adventure.

AWE-INSPIRING ACCOMMODATION

To ensure the most comfortable and relaxing of experiences, Nova offers an assortment of accommodation types to suit all tastes. From cosy Beach Villas to a two-bedroom Beach Residence complete with private pool, the island resort has something for every requirement.

We were happy to be housed in Beach Villas complete with Jacuzzies. These uber comfy and stylish locations provided home bases for us to kick back and unwind whenever we desired. Overlooking the open ocean, it was a pleasure to simply sit and absorb the view from our private decks or from the temperature controlled Jacuzzies. Complete with king-sized beds, plush bedding, in-room high speed internet, flatscreen HD televisions, along with Apple TV, we wanted for nothing over the four days in our lavish accommodations.

MAJESTIC MEALS

During our time on the island, we were thoroughly spoilt by our hosts, not least through the abundance of delicious dishes we were served throughout our stay.

SOUL KITCHEN

Soul Kitchen’s wide-ranging, mouth-watering menu is rivalled only by the incredible views on offer and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute we spent in this friendly and relaxing environment. Open from morning to night, this superb eatery offers generous buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

FLAMES

Flames is another ‘must mention’ restaurant. This fine-dining location offers some of the freshest and most succulent ingredients you could hope to find on your plate. Featuring everything from local fish, seafood and meat to delectable vegetarian-based options, the talented chefs ensure every dish is grilled or prepared to absolute perfection.

MIZU

Mizu is a picturesque overwater teppanyaki restaurant that offers a first-class menu of ocean delights. Pair this exceptional food with enchanting Indian Ocean views and you have an almost unrivalled dining location. Fortunate enough to experience the culinary magnificence this venue offers, we were taken by the delightful tropical flavours, created from fresh local ingredients and served by the most attentive and hospitable of staff members.

WINK

A little later in the evenings, the nights truly came alive. The vibrant Wink provided all guests the opportunity to meet their fellow visitors, to hold lively conversations while enjoying cold beverages or a late meal. At this venue, we experienced some of the very finest hookah we have ever sampled, as well as some foot-stomping local rhythms. As music lovers, we were truly impressed by the talent and energy exhibited by The Kabans. This local cabana band rocked the crowd with their lively music and spirited performances, often causing us to get to bed far later than originally intended.

AMAZING ADVENTURES

Thanks to its numerous natural atolls, the Maldives is one of the world’s primary destinations for ocean life experiences. The diverse local flora and fauna includes sea turtles, dolphins, whale sharks, manta rays and beautiful coral reefs that are home to thousands of species of fish. During our unforgettable stay, we were lucky enough to experience various ocean adventures in one of the most breath-taking aquatic environments.

SUNSET TRIPS

There’re moments in your life when you must stop and appreciate the adventure of it all. This was certainly the case as we headed off on our Indian Ocean sunset trip. Along with the already spectacular nature of our surroundings, we were privileged to spot dolphins playing in the water less than 50 metres from our boat. Witnessing a flawlessly beautiful sunset whilst appreciating these magnificent creatures in their natural environment is a moment we won’t soon forget.

Nova is a natural island and the sea’s gentle giants such as whale sharks and manta rays reside in the surrounding waters all year round.

We had a further ocean-bound adventure in the form of a sunset fishing excursion. Golden trevally, red bass, coral trout, rainbow runners and reef fish along with a variety of tuna, are all sought after prizes in these waters. Whether you want to be actively involved in the fishing process or simply relax and enjoy the views from the water, the choice is yours.

AQUAHOLICS

Aquaholics is the name of Nova’s watersport centre. If you’re looking for excitement, relaxation, outstanding ocean views or the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local marine life, this is the place for you. Aquaholics offers snorkelling options along with an extensive range of scuba diving experiences. An array of beginner and advanced courses as well as private diving experiences, of various lengths and makeups, are available. A broad range of equipment is also on offer to rent. We got to experience two hours of snorkelling in the almost unbelievable underwater world around Nova. The vibrant colours combined with the warm waters and abundance of sea life, including whale sharks and manta rays, made the entire experience seem somewhat surreal and it was tough to leave this submerged Shangri-la at the end of the adventure.

PRIVATE PAMPERING

One of our favourite moments at Nova was the Eskape Spa experience. On offer at this idyllic venue is an assortment of massages and treatments, specially designed to relax and rejuvenate the body and the senses. The Maldivian Ocean Dream Massage is the signature massage and it’s easy to understand why. As we indulged in this stress-stripping activity, on a tropical island, with the promise of more

luxury and adventure to come, we couldn’t help but wonder if travelling experiences could get any better than this.

HEADING HOME

As difficult as it was to leave Nova Maldives at the end of our stay, we took with us a wealth of unforgettable memories that we’ll always treasure. We would like to thank all Nova staff members for both their kindness and attentiveness. They were the heart and soul of this one-ofa-kind adventure. ✤

THE MAN BEHIND THE HANDLE

Ever wondered how you become an ‘influencer’? We go some way to finding the answer.

With nearly 50,000 followers Taleb Jassim, the man behind @luxurydesign, has been creating compelling Instagram content for more than 10 years attracting collaborations with the likes of Dior, Hermès, Bulgari and more. In 2022 he took the big decision to quit his job to pursue his dream of working online full time as well as setting up his own café with a floral twist. FACT caught up with him to talk inspirations and aspirations.

When did you start @luxurydesign and why?

Literally the moment I knew about Instagram, around 2012. @luxurydesign was my handle in the blog era and it continued to be my handle across my socials. I started it out of a passion for content creation. I think I always had an eye for photography.

Did you always intend to become an ‘influencer’ and how did you build your following?

To be completely honest, it happened naturally and unintentionally. I loved taking pictures and I loved sharing them. I also used to make a lot of graphic designs and add to them a touch of fashion, this is basically how I built my Instagram profile. People loved my designs, photography and, I guess, my style.

What inspires the non-partner content you create? Basically, everything I encounter in life inspires me to create. Whether it is an outfit I loved or a lyric I read from a song. The inspiration is limitless.

You’ve had collaborations with some very high-end brands, how did these come about?

As an influencer, to attract high-end brands you basically need two things working in your favour. First, a unique brand that you build online and an amazing manager/ agency! So, in my case it’s my Instagram profile and Aida Remach. You have to create a brand in order to attract one.

Which has been your favorite partnership so far? And do you have any new partnerships coming up?

I don’t have favourites, each and every partnership has a distinct place in my heart. Because each one has its own unique moments attached to its creative process.

Your bio mentions that you are an interior designer. Please tell us a bit about this side of your life – how did you qualify and can you tell us about any projects you’ve worked on?

I love design in general, whether it is interior design, graphic design or fashion design. I just have this tremendous love of creating things and making my ideas come to life. So, to answer the question I did not graduate with an interior design degree, it’s just a hobby of mine that falls under the same umbrella as the love of creating things. However, I’ve worked on some projects such as my coffeeshop Blooming Gate, my old coffee shop Vintage and some other private projects.

You gave up your job last year to pursue content creation full-time. How has that been working out? Were you worried at the time?

Definitely! I was extremely worried; I took a huge leap of faith! But whenever I think about it, you can’t put a price on freedom. I didn’t like the idea of a fixed routine and being bossed around doing things I did not enjoy. My mental health suffered because of my previous job but now I’m at peace and living my dream!

You have also now started Blooming Gate. Please tell us about this venture. What inspired it and are you the designer for the flowers? If yes, how did you learn to do this?

I have always dreamt of having my own little coffee place, and I had this weird obsession with flowers! So I decided to combine the two and to start my own little shop! So far it is doing great and I am thankful to everyone who has supported me in this journey.

What’s next for the future?

I will be focusing on creating content even more! Trying to achieve more high-end collaborations and engaging more with my followers. In addition to taking my business to the next phase. I’m really looking forward to this year.✤

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Beauty’s In The Eye Winners Quit Message In A Bottle

They say beauty is skin deep. And rightly so. One look at the seven finalists of this year’s UK’s Ugliest Dog competition is proof; scanty fur, dangly tongues, bulging eyes, buck teeth… and strangely still adorable. The competition hopes to show that every dog is beautiful no matter how it looks. Kudos to the photography company that created this national competition, especially relevant today when pets are considered a status symbol or an object to own and show off. Competitions such as this one eliminate the stigma attached to owning a pet that’s not perfect. In other words: old, unwell or handicapped, not pedigreed, a stray… Let’s hope more of us open our hearts and homes to these beauties!

You heard us! The world was taken by surprise when former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, announced her resignation. She said she ‘doesn’t have enough in the tank’, implying that she was experiencing a burnout. While our initial reaction was ‘why?’, considering she had brought about a new and fresh approach to her

That’s what’s so right about the initiative because it shifts the responsibility onto the user. Further, it underpins the communal nature of the movement against single-use plastic.
