ROYAL RUMBLE RETURNS
Boxing champions, live performances and charity come together at the Crowne Plaza Hotel as Bahrain stages its biggest boxing night of the year.
Bahrain is set to host Royal Rumble IV, the annual international boxing clash between Bahrain’s Royal Guard boxing team and a joint squad from the United Kingdom’s Armed Forces, including the Royal Navy, the British Army and the Royal Air Force.
The event takes place on November 27 at the Crowne Plaza Bahrain’s newly refurbished ballroom and is held under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, President of the General Sports Authority and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee.
This year, the Royal Guard will face strong competition as the UK team looks to end Bahrain’s winning streak of three consecutive victories in their previous encounters. Beyond the action in the ring, the event aims to drive forward the progress of boxing in the Kingdom and support the Royal Humanitarian Fund as its chosen charitable cause.
Attendees can expect a high-energy night of boxing, with guest appearances from world-renowned athletes, including Amir Khan – former two-time World Champion and Olympic silver medallist; Lawrence Okolie – WBO (World Boxing Organization) Cruiserweight, WBC (World Boxing Council) Bridgerweight Champion and Heavyweight Contender; and
Rocky Fielding – WBA (World Boxing Association) Super Middleweight Champion. Expert commentary will be provided by DAZN’s Darren Barker, IBF Middleweight World Champion, and Barry Jones, Super Featherweight World Champion.
Entertainment outside the ring will feature local Bahraini singer, Amal Al Anbary, who will be performing alongside her band throughout the evening, while the Bahrain Defence Forces Band will mark the entrance of each fighter.
Sponsorship options include Headline, Gold (10 seats, BD2,000), Silver (10 seats, BD1,000) and Bronze (10 seats, BD500) packages, each offering different tiers of ringside seating, along with a premium beverage reception, a lavish dinner with silver service and various drinks packages, complementing the event’s blacktie or thobe dress code.
Royal Rumble IV promises an evening of high-level boxing, entertainment and charity, highlighting the growth of the sport in Bahrain, while bringing together local and international talent in one highly anticipated event.✤ GO: CALL 6668

NASHVILLE COMES TO BAHRAIN
A little bit country, a little bit rock with a smidge of emo thrown in for good measure. If you like your music foot tapping and interesting, then you need to check out Stephen Wilson Jr, who’ll be performing at Beyon Al Dana Amphitheatre on December 4. With a lifelong passion for poetry and music, ignited by long, country music-filled school bus rides in rural Southern Indiana, the musician initially joined an indie band before carving his own path in music. He’s described his sound as ‘Death Cab For Country’ – a great recommendation if ever there was one. And his influences range from The National, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp to Nirvana. With a new EP coming out at the end of this month, we can’t wait to hear him perform live, right here in Bahrain. Tickets are available at manama.platinumlist.net and are priced starting from BD10. ✤

Tucked inside the restaurant’s newly expanded, vintage-inspired interiors, it feels like a throwback to an era when evenings were all about style, conversation and theatre. The highlight is its mocktail menu, a carefully choreographed experience created by in-house mixologists, inspired by the golden age. Signature creations like Amalfi lemon spritzers and Tuscan herb infusions (all alcohol-free) are served in bespoke glassware that turns every sip into a special moment. Whether for a pre-dinner aperitivo, a postdinner catch-up or a chic night out with friends, Il Salone is where Bahrain comes to savour La Bella Vita.✤

GULF FOOTBALLING RIVALIRIES IN SPOTLIGHT DOHA TURNS THE SPOTLIGHT ON PHOTOGRAPHY
With eight regional clubs in the mix, the Gulf Club Champions League returns this month, offering supporters a rare stage for regional competition beyond domestic borders.
For football addicts, September isn’t just the return of domestic leagues, it’s also the month when Gulf pride takes to the pitch. The Gulf Club Champions League (GCCL) kicks off on September 30, running through to April 2026, with fixtures staged across the region under the organisation of the Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation.
Now entering a new edition, the GCCL has become a key fixture on the regional football calendar, offering clubs the chance to test themselves beyond their national borders.
This year’s lineup features a mix of Gulf heavyweights and ambitious challengers. Qatar’s Al-Rayyan, Saudi Arabia’s AlShabab, the UAE’s Al-Ain and Kuwait’s Al-Qadsia headline the draw, joined by Al-Nahda of Oman, Bahrain’s Sitra, Zakho from Iraq and Yemen’s Al-Tadamun Hadramaut.
The format is straightforward but unforgiving: two groups of four, with only the top two advancing to the knockout stage. That means every point counts and the early matches are likely to carry the tension of finals.
Supporters can expect the hallmarks of Gulf football: tight encounters, passionate stands and no shortage of regional pride on display. Originally scheduled earlier in the month, the tournament’s kick-off was moved to September 30 to allow more preparation time, a short delay that has only heightened anticipation for one of the Gulf’s most eagerly followed competitions. ✤
Qatar is adding a new fixture to its cultural calendar with the launch of the Doha Photography Award, open to photographers worldwide.
With prize money surpassing QR2 million, the Doha Photography Award opens its first edition as one of the Gulf’s most richly endowed cultural contests. Organised by the Qatar Photography Center under the Ministry of Culture, the competition runs until October 2 and is already attracting attention well beyond the country’s borders.
Six categories set the framework. The Qatar section calls for images of the nation’s landscapes and landmarks; Colour and Black & White divisions reward contrasting approaches to craft; the Emotions category asks photographers to capture human feeling in a single frame; Storytelling demands a sequence that unfolds as a narrative; and a Youth category highlights Qatari talents under 18.
The rules are strict: professional cameras are mandatory, AI-generated content is banned and images cannot carry logos or watermarks. The Qatar category winner will take home QR300,000, while first place in the other sections is worth QR150,000, with generous second and third prizes also offered.
For Director Jassim Al Buainain: “This award is not merely a competition; it is an invitation for every photographer to be part of the photographic history of our country and to leave their mark on the record of artistic creativity.” ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.MOC.GOV.QA FOR

NEW SEASON'S LOOKS
We take a look at some of the trends making waves on the season's runways.
Bring on the Brights
While autumnal colours and heavier textures were certainly in evidence, another trend to emerge on the season’s runways and campaigns was the rise of bright colours and bold patterns.
At dunhill, the oh-so-British brand embraced the trend with soft mustard corduroys and checks, which were also seen at Prada. TOM FORD sent models down the runway in classic cuts transformed by ice cream hues. Versace’s traditional patterns were rendered in super brights – ruby clashing brilliantly against gold and purple – while McQueen went for glittering golden sequins and Louis Vuitton came on board with all-over pastels. A definite breath of fresh air amongst the regular cooler season neutrals.
Frou, Frou
For The Win
Flounces, feathers, architectural shapes and fabric flowers brought interest across the runways adding fun to the season’s more subdued hues.
McQueen went all out with gorgeous crimson faux fur and Mongolian wool, while at Versace, models strutted their stuff in structured skirting and oversized padding that slightly resembled a duvet! At Onori, architectural elements took centre stage and Carolina Herrera presented several tactile and sophisticated floral details.

Big and Bold
Alongside a range of sharp tailoring, men’s fashions will see a turn towards the more comfort driven, with oversized silhouettes in classic suiting fabrics.
Ferragamo featured slouchy monochrome ensembles that took on board a second trend – extra-long trousers – while TOM FORD paired brightly coloured, baggy pants with an angular jacket and overcoat. Coach demonstrated several of the season’s looks all in one place as it showed off funky, fun bag charms, uber-loose, long pants and a mix of colours and textures. Ferragamo went one better with giant waste bags as an accessory and Louis Vuitton fully embraced the informal with skater-style cut-offs and baggy tops.
From suits to separates, these looks are all about stylish comfort.
Ladylike Lines
Not seen for quite some time, the pencil skirt makes a return this autumn from suits to separates.
Givenchy went retro with a ‘50s-style nipped-waist jacket over a simple column skirt for an almost austere look, while Carolina Herrera upped the ante with an asymmetric hemline coupled with a high side split. Versace brought the slit to the front with a figure-shaping, wrap-around style and McQueen went for a similar cut in a longer line. True to the classical nature of this piece, most designers opted for solid black but both Carolina Herrera and Versace presented patterned versions.

Layers & Textures
Even though winter in our part of the world doesn’t call for quite the same level of wrapping up as some other places, we still look forward to bringing out the woollies and our favourite jackets.
This season’s collections embraced the concept of layers and textures. At dunhill a chunky sweater was thrown casually across the shoulders atop a waistcoat and overcoat, while McQueen went big with frou-frou frills spilling out of a bumfreezer jacket. Prada paraded cow-print sheepskin beneath a classic bomber and Versace boasted bright purple leather with a sumptuous patterned lining over a matching shirt. Boss and Malo went for classic monochrome, making use of luxe fabrics to set the tone, while Coach went for fun fabric mixes. Wrap up warm, folks.
Sparkle and Shine
Let’s be honest, sequins never really went away, they’re the quintessential go to for a night out or a special event. But this season the variations were just that little bit extra. McQueen led with a beautifully patterned and embellished black coat accompanied by metallic boots and bag and, if this wasn’t enough, the house also presented a riotously beaded and sequinned coloured dress offset by layers of black pleats. Versace kept it minimal, if such can be said of sequins, presenting pieces that actually resembled armour. Onori added overlong tassels to its shimmering tube dresses and, at Carolina Herrera, the look was sequinned but kind of naked.

Down To Earth
There’s no doubt about it, brown is definitely having a moment. Much loved in the ‘70s, over the following decades, this earthy hue became the preserve of elderly gents in high waisters and tank tops. But now, it’s back with a bang!
From sharply tailored leather suits at Versace and TOM FORD to a comfy, cosy Teddy bear jacket at Ferragamo, this season’s runways and campaigns couldn’t get enough of shades from deep chocolate to golden fawn and everything in between. Boss presented tonal shades in natural fabrics, while dunhill went for tan-on-tan in monochrome, coupled with checks and a matching tote. Ever classy, Malo and Prada went for slight variations in shade using textures in cord and wool to add interest, while Dries Van Noten used embellishment to liven up a regular rain mac. And not a pair of grandad pants in sight.
The New Black
Earthy tones of brown and caramel were very strong on this season’s runways giving an air of warmth and comfort.
Coach and Boss featured slouchy jackets while Malo went for a full-on leather look in matching pants and jacket – very super hero. At Onori, the shapes were super feminine with pearly embellishment on deep chocolate fabrics, while Farm Rio worked shades of rust and pink into its signature floral prints. And Ferragamo brought the arm candy in the shape of a gorgeous brown tote.

A ROYAL MOTORING REFRESH
fact took the latest new-look Genesis G80 for a spin, discovering that comfort, character and class can carpool with ease in one mid-sized saloon.
Afacelift is always a delicate moment for a car – change too much and you risk losing what people liked, change too little and it fades into the background. The G80 3.5T Royal arrived freshly updated and we were eager to experience how all the elements came together.
A Fresh Face
Genesis didn’t try to reinvent the exterior design; it simply sharpened the highlights and refined the details. We appreciated the broader dual-weave mesh Crest Grille and the slimmer Two-Line headlamps with Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology, that together gave the G80 the sort of calm expression that says, ‘I know I look good, let’s not make a fuss’. At the rear, we noticed the three-dimensional contours of the bumper and how the mufflers had been replaced with a polished V-shaped chrome trim that added a luxurious feel. The new LED tail lamps sharpened things up further, while at the flanks, the 20-inch alloy wheels – shaped like aircraft propellers – had us pausing for a second look.
Interior Touches
Inside, the updates were immediately noticeable. The Nappa leather ergo motion seats were supportive and comfy, with ventilation, heating and a massage function so good, we half expected someone to turn up with a cucumber water and a hot towel. The UV-C steriliser in the armrest was impossible to ignore – we gave anything we could find a zap, because, well, why not?
The rest of the cabin carries the same attention to detail: highquality materials, clean lines and subtle ambient mood lighting that made the space feel calm and refined without ever being showy. The suede headlining, pillars and sun visors gave the interior a plush finish, complemented by real wood and aluminium garnishes and metallic door scuff plates, proof that the finer details weren’t overlooked.
In-Car Smarts
The upgraded G80 showed us how high-tech can feel effortless. From first entry, touch-sensitive door handles and welcome lights added a little flair, showcasing the amount of thought the brand has put into improving the user experience. Front and centre, the 27-inch display stretched across the dashboard. It didn’t feel like a screen bolted on as an afterthought, but effortlessly blended into its surroundings, becoming part of the cabin’s design language. Paired with the Genesis Integrated Controller, we could easily navigate the crisp-looking menus without the usual finger-poking frenzy that leaves screens looking like a crime scene.
A fingerprint authentication system remembered our preferred settings, wireless charging ensured a cable-free cabin, the three-zone climate control kept us cool and the Bang & Olufsen premium sound system transformed our playlists into an immersive audio experience.
In the rear, dual 14.6-inch screens promised plenty of entertainment for children and other passengers while on the move.
Performance on Tap
Of course, looks and tech mean little if the drive disappoints. The G80 3.5T Royal quickly proved it was up to the task. Its twin-turbo V6 engine gave us more than enough muscle – 375hp, delivered smoothly through the eight-speed automatic transmission. When we pulled out to overtake on the highway, it felt almost casual, the torque arriving early and with conviction.
What struck us most, though, was the comfort. Even when we hit a few uneven patches along the way, the suspension system, complete with frequency-responsive structures in the front and rear shock absorbers, soaked them up.
The cabin was peaceful throughout the drive, thanks to the double-glazed windows and sound-absorbing tyres. It was quiet enough that our conversations naturally softened, as though the car itself dictated the tone.
One Step Ahead
In rush hour traffic, we put the driver-assist features to the test. Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist kept a watchful eye on other vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. Driver Attention Warning used grip sensors to accurately detect when the driver was holding the steering wheel (without nagging). Blind-spot Collision-Avoidance Assist warnings acted like an extra pair of eyes.
The highlight for us was Remote Parking Assist. We stepped out, pressed the button and watched the G80 park itself neatly between two oversized SUVs. A few passersby stopped to watch,
When we pulled out to overtake on the highway, it felt almost casual, the torque arriving early and with conviction.”
and we pretended not to notice – though we couldn’t resist feeling a little smug.
Genesis has also included several other assistance systems to ensure the safety of all occupants.
Final Thoughts
By the time our test drive wrapped up, the G80 3.5T Royal had won us over not just with its spec sheet but with how effortlessly it wove those impressive specs into the driving experience. It was stylish without trying too hard, powerful without being unruly and packed with tech without making us feel like we needed a manual to use it.
For us, that was the charm: a luxury saloon that didn’t need to be loud to make its point. The updates haven’t reinvented the G80 – they’ve sharpened it, building on its strengths, while keeping its character intact. ✤
ICONIC MARQUE DEBUTS RACING-INSPIRED LIVERY
McLaren Project: Endurance, which offers the opportunity to own a genuine McLaren Hypercar, showed off its new Triple Crown-inspired designs during Monterey Car Week.
At a special event presented by McLaren Group Holdings CEO, Nick Collins, with McLaren Racing CEO, Zak Brown, and hosted by Justin Bell, third place overall finisher at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans in the #51 McLaren F1 GTR, Project: Endurance showcased a new livery with a nod to the famed 1974 Indianapolis 500 winning McLaren M16.
First revealed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June, the McLaren Hypercar will make its competitive debut in the 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) as the company campaigns to again win the Triple Crown of motorsport – the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Indianapolis 500 and Monaco Grand Prix – this time in a single season. McLaren is the only team to have won all three of these iconic races.
The new livery takes its inspiration from the first of McLaren’s Triple Crown victories, when the M16, driven by Texan Johnny Rutherford, won the 1974 Indianapolis 500. The body colour is updated to McLaren Orange with a dark blue centre strip inspired by the colour of the Texas flag, and the roof of the cockpit is adorned with the lone white star of Texas as carried on the helmet design used by Rutherford – who was known as ‘Lone Star JR’. The livery carries Lone Star JR’s race number, three, as well as McLaren’s Speedy Kiwi and Speedmark logos.
Project: Endurance offers the opportunity to own an authentic Le Mans Hypercar – a driving experience few will ever enjoy – and to be at the very heart of an elite motorsport development and testing programme. This includes full behind-the-scenes access
to the upcoming McLaren United AS WEC campaign, key team personnel and drivers as well as a comprehensive track driving programme at world-famous race circuits.
Inclusive to the Project: Endurance ownership experience, customers will enjoy a two-year McLaren customer track programme that includes some of the world’s best race circuits. Each owner will receive driver coaching from a race professional, with individual pit crew and race engineers supporting throughout, allowing them a pathway to master their hypercar and push their limits at the pinnacle of sportscar racing. ✤

A GLOBAL JOURNEY IN HOSPITALITY
For Yazan Latif, the new General Manager of Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain, leading the property is not just about luxury, it’s about creating lasting memories that reflect the warmth of Bahrain.
With more than 25 years of international experience, Yazan Latif has built a reputation as a leader who understands both the art and the precision of luxury hospitality. His career has taken him to some of the world’s most renowned destinations, but today his focus is firmly on Bahrain as he steps into his exciting new role.
“It’s an honour to join the Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain team,” he says. “My focus in these early months is to ensure delivering outstanding and elevated service that matches both our unique property and the warm and welcoming hospitality of Bahrain.
“What makes this property unique is its service culture and its deep connection to the community.”
The Raffles brand is synonymous with heritage and sophistication, qualities Yazan respects deeply. “At Raffles, we celebrate our heritage by staying true to timeless values like elegance and service,” he explains. “At the same time, we embrace innovation to keep the experience fresh. This means integrating modern technologies and experiences, like wellness offerings or smart features, while ensuring we stay rooted in the authentic Arabian luxury that defines Raffles Al Areen Palace.”
Looking ahead, Yazan envisions the hotel as more than just a getaway. “I’m excited to position Raffles Al Areen Palace as both a luxurious retreat and a cultural landmark,” he says.
“By weaving Bahrain’s rich traditions and art into the guest experience – through curated dining, wellness rituals and collaborations with local artisans – we’ll offer more than just a stay; we’ll create lasting memories that resonate with guests long after they leave.”
As he looks to the future of Raffles Al Areen Palace, Yazan also recognises the strong foundation and commitment behind the property and says: “Thank you to Gulf Finance House [owning company] for a great product and the support.”
The guest-first philosophy is grounded in Yazan’s own journey. He began as a front desk agent, where he quickly learnt that hospitality is about empathy and connection. “Starting at the front desk taught me the importance of personal interaction,” he reflects. “It made me a more approachable leader who understands the challenges faced by every team member. I lead by example and focus on creating a supportive environment, as I believe a motivated team is key to delivering exceptional service.”
His leadership style has been shaped by time spent in cities as varied as London, Amman, Whistler, Mumbai and Jakarta – each leaving its mark. “Each city has taught me something valuable but the diversity of experiences across these destinations has been most impactful,” he says. “Each culture offers a different perspective on service, and adapting to those nuances has shaped my approach to leadership, where hospitality is always about connecting with people and understanding their needs.”
Premium hospitality, he notes, is as much about spontaneity as it is about precision. Recalling a particularly memorable request, he says: “Luxury hospitality often brings the unexpected, and that’s what makes it rewarding. Once, we helped a guest plan a time-sensitive surprise, coordinating quickly with multiple teams and external partners to create a deeply meaningful moment. These experiences remind me that luxury is about delivering

personalised moments with care and agility.”
Outside the world of hotels, Yazan enjoys exploring new cultures and culinary experiences, and says spending time with his family helps him recharge. He’s also passionate about cars and finds inspiration in F1. ✤
ISLAND INSIDER
Dalya Abdulla
Marketing Manager, Euro Motors Ferrari Bahrain
You’ve been with Ferrari Bahrain for over two years. What’s been the most rewarding part of your role so far?
There’s something truly special about connecting people who share the same passion and watching them come together through events, drives and celebrations. Every day, I’m surrounded by Ferraris – whether in the showroom, on display or in the service centre, and that to me never loses its magic. Every Ferrari is unique and tells a story of heritage and innovation, and having the opportunity to translate that into experiences for our clients is incredibly rewarding.
What's one principle or mindset that has guided you throughout your career, especially as a marketing professional? What guides me most is consistency, coupled with a drive to always outdo yesterday’s success. Luxury marketing, for me, is about delivering an exceptional standard every single time – but it’s also about asking: ‘How can I do this better?’ I believe excellence is never accidental; it comes from passion, consistency and the determination to examine every detail, no matter how small.
What are your three favourite apps that you can't live without and why?
Instagram, YouTube and CapCut are my go-to apps because, at the heart, I am a very visual person. I’m constantly drawn to images, videos and creative storytelling, and these platforms allow me to explore that side of myself. They inspire my work and keep me connected, but I also believe in balance. In my free time, I make a conscious choice to step away from screens. Painting, baking or simply being present give me the creative release I need offline, and that balance keeps both my passion and imagination alive.
IN PURSUIT OF PERFECTION
An accomplished chef specialising in Japanese cuisine, Kevin De Guzman, Chef De Cuisine at Sato, The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa, talks about mentoring young talent, challenging kitchen moments and a nostalgic dish he’d love to master.
You’ve been at The Gulf Hotel for over a decade and climbed the ranks. What has been your biggest inspiration and how has that shaped the way you mentor younger chefs today? My greatest inspiration has been the pursuit of culinary mastery and the desire to push boundaries in flavour and presentation. Also, the resilience and dedication of the team members I've worked with over the years. I've been motivated by the evolution of our hotel’s reputation and the trust our guests place in us. Collaborating with talented mentors like the legendary two Michelin-starred Chef Takagi Kazuo and other chefs’ dedication has driven me to constantly improve and innovate. This inspiration
shapes how I mentor young chefs today. I encourage them to be passionate, disciplined and to view setbacks as opportunities to grow. I stress the importance of humility, teamwork, strong work ethic and embracing creativity while respecting tradition. My goal is to nurture their confidence and inspire them to aim for excellence, just as I strived to do through my career.
Every chef has their fair share of challenges in the kitchen. What’s one moment that really tested you and what did you take away from it?
The one moment that really tested me was during a particularly
busy Friday night service when one of our kitchen machines broke down right in the middle of dinner rush. We had over 100 covers booked and suddenly some of our menu and bestsellers became impossible to execute as planned. We had to think fast and work together like never before. We immediately pivoted our entire menu strategy. I had my sous chef and kitchen generals grilling proteins that were meant to be roasted – we turned our salamander grill to overdrive, and we even borrowed space in our prep kitchen's smaller ovens. The whole team stepped up – servers were communicating constantly with guests about slight delays, and my line cooks were adapting recipes on the fly. What I took away from that night was: the importance of having a team you can truly rely on and that some of my best creative solutions come under pressure. Most importantly, it taught me that flexibility and communication are just as crucial as technical skills in the kitchen.
If you weren’t working with Japanese cuisine, what unexpected type of food would you secretly love to master or eat every day?
If I'm being completely honest, my granny had this way of making this dish that was just... perfect! The peanut sauce was silky and rich but never heavy, and she'd get this depth of flavour that, I swear, came from some secret technique she never fully shared. She'd use oxtail and tripe but also throw in these perfectly tender vegetables – string beans, pak choi, eggplant – and everything would just meld together in incredible harmony. I've tried
recreating it so many times since she passed, and yes, I can get close, but it's never quite right. There was something about how she toasted the rice flour, or maybe it was the way she'd slowly build that sauce, stirring it with this old wooden spoon while telling stories about her childhood in the village. If I could master that one dish – really master it the way she had – I think I could eat it every single day and never get tired of it.
What’s the one dish at Sato that best reflects your style and philosophy as a chef?
The dish that truly embodies my philosophy at Sato is our Sushi Omakase – particularly how we present our daily catch of seafood selections. What makes it special isn't complexity but the pursuit of absolute perfection in simplicity. We source our fish directly from Tsukiji-trained suppliers, age it precisely to develop optimal texture and flavour and serve it at the best temperature with nothing more than fresh wasabi, aged shoyu and perfectly seasoned sushi rice. This reflects my core belief that a chef's role is to be a translator between the ingredient and the guest. The fish tells its own story – where it came from, how it lived, the season it was caught. My job is simply to present that story in its most honest, beautiful form. This simple sushi represents hours of invisible work: the relationships with our suppliers, the knife skills honed over decades and the understanding of how temperature and timing affect every bite. ✤
SPANISH FLAVOURS IN BAHRAIN
If you’re looking to try authentic Spanish cuisine without leaving the island, look no further than Salero, as Fernanda Langhammer discovered when she headed to the eatery to savour its many delicious Iberian dishes.
When it comes to culinary offerings, Bahrain doesn’t disappoint. We find an array of cuisines, but for Spanish, there is only one place that’s an absolute reference: Salero at The Westin City Centre Bahrain.
This cuisine is renowned for its emphasis on seafood, fresh produce and high-quality olive oil. Offering the concept of tapas, which are small plates of food, it encourages social eating and sharing a selection of dishes.
Salero is a gem. Its vibrant atmosphere is led by an eyecatching panel painted on its walls in vivid shades, with the ceiling covered in wicker baskets (a cool touch). There’s also an open kitchen and a unique feature that you won’t find anywhere else in the Kingdom: an extremely talented flamenco duo, performing every night (except Sundays) – I doubt you will find a better performance in town.
Chef Ruben Botella is in charge of the kitchen. Some of his dishes were better than the ones I’ve tried in Madrid – beautifully prepared with premium ingredients – everything made with extra care.
We started our dinner with a Salero signature, Pan con Tomate, made with homemade bread, roasted garlic, olive oil and salt. This amuse-bouche is a must-try. Omar, our host, explained that we should spread the garlic on the warm slice, top it with the thinly chopped fresh tomato and add a pinch of salt – simple, yet full of flavour – we kept going back for more.
The next dish was the Ensalada de Queso de Cabra, a caramelised goat cheese salad with fruits, walnuts and a honey-sherry dressing. Featuring a variety of textures, the crunchiness of green leaves and walnuts contrasted with the softness and intense cheese flavour, pairing perfectly with the sweetness of strawberries and blueberries in a dressing that was tangy from the vinegar but perfectly balanced with honey. The Boquerones followed, thin slices of toasted bread topped with roasted red capsicum and a delicate piece of marinated anchovy. I must confess that anchovies are not my favourite delicacy but, surprisingly, they were not too salty and paired well with the sweetness of the bell pepper. It was one of my dining companion’s favourite dishes of the night.
It wouldn’t be a Spanish restaurant if it didn’t offer a selection of croquettes. We had the Croquetas de Pollo Asado, perfectly round balls filled with finely chopped homemade roasted chicken in a smooth bechamel sauce. The deep-fried balls were incredibly creamy, accompanied by a Romesco sauce (a nutty and slightly spicy Spanish sauce made with roasted red peppers, tomatoes, almonds and garlic). In this delicious, crispy snack, the dipping sauce added a delightful complexity to our taste buds and a sense of comfort.
The simplest dish of the evening was also one of the most praised ones, Pimientos de Padrón Fritos, or fried Padrón peppers. Paired with a cold brew, this mild-flavoured green pepper is not spicy, but it has a sweet and smoky hint that makes it perfect as a unique side dish.
We tried another Spanish tapas staple, the Tortilla de Patata Española, also known as traditional Spanish omelette. I love
this dish, which can be eaten at any time of the day. Prepared with eggs and potatoes, Chef Ruben’s version was an absolute winner – the perfect ratio of ingredients, a creamy interior and a hint of black pepper that made me return to it many times.
The two mains were Pulpo a la Parrilla, accompanied by mashed potatoes and, of course, Paella de Marisco. The first was a perfectly cooked octopus served on a bed of the most delicious mashed potatoes I have ever eaten. The octopus had a fork-tender, yet firm texture and a succulent flavour. The mash was spectacular; I could taste that the potatoes were baked before being transformed into the lush puree. Chef Ruben shared his secret with me: a generous amount of high-quality butter to achieve this divine consistency – a dish made in heaven. The seafood paella came to seal the deal of Salero’s impressive menu. The rice was cooked just right, with intense, tangy flavours and topped with massive mussels and prawns. If you’ve never tried paella before, a visit to Salero is a must.
To end a meal that will stay high on my long list of excellent dining experiences was the Tarta de Queso Vasca. This Basque-like cheesecake at Salero is made with three types of cheese: Manchego (made with sheep’s milk), mascarpone and, surprisingly, blue cheese. It was light with a rich flavour, featuring a subtle hint of blue cheese, perfect for those like me who don’t like sweet desserts. We couldn’t have ended this memorable dinner on a better note.
Salero is one of those places that you visit once and never forget – an eatery that will impress your palate and make you want more. I am looking forward to going back to explore other menu items (and repeat some of them). ✤
ON SELECTED ITEMS
WHERE FOOD PUTS ON A SHOW
Presenting a fusion of Mediterranean and Asian dishes, KAYA has been wowing Bahrain foodies since it opened last year. Apple Sharma headed into the heart of Adliya to explore the delightful offerings of the restaurant’s brand-new menu.
If you’re in the mood for an evening of fun, flamboyance and serious flavour, KAYA should be high on your list. Located on the top floor of the GEO building, next to The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa, it’s been on my radar for a while. I may be late to the party, but the launch of the new menu felt like the perfect excuse to finally go and see what the fuss is about.
As soon as you enter, a corridor studded with sparkling bottles leads to a small foyer featuring a coniferous Japanese Kaya tree and a stunning glass chandelier of suspended gold and silver leaves. The venue instantly impresses with its scale: a long bar, an intimate dining area with a stage for entertainment (more on that later) and a lounge area boasting breathtaking city views.
KAYA offers a gastronomic experience like no other. The plush décor blends rocky foliaged walls and hanging planters with green, grey and terracotta velvet seating, black marble tables and gold-bronze accents. By day, it’s a stylish restaurant, by night, KAYA transforms into a lively lounge with dazzling singers, dancers and acrobatic performances. It’s also the only place I’ve seen in Bahrain with two soundproof phone booths for private calls – a thoughtful touch! There’s also a fully retractable roof, making winter visits even more fabulous.
Walking in with my colleagues, we were warmly greeted by the restaurant staff, followed shortly by Executive Chef Ismael Garcia, who briefed us on the new fusion menu and the exquisite dishes ahead.
Our culinary journey began with three refreshing signature
mocktails – unique concoctions infused with jalapeños, Tajin spices and homemade syrups – sweet, zingy and spicy, all at once. Then came the appetisers.
The Scallops Yuzu Honey was a bright, fresh start: scallop sashimi with tangy-sweet yuzu honey dressing, served with strawberries, cherry tomatoes and aromatic herbs. Light and summery, its delicate flavours and artful presentation won over even those usually hesitant about raw seafood.
The Mixed Seafood Roll was visually striking and full of surprises, featuring six types of seafood: tobikko (flying fish roe), hamachi (yellowtail), sake (salmon), suzuki (seabass), kani (crab) and maguro (tuna). All wrapped in daikon for a sweet crunch and topped with wasabi salsa, these light and fluffy morsels looked as good as they tasted. With the rice already pre-seasoned with yuzu soy, it only needed pickled ginger and wasabi for the flavours to pop in the mouth (literally, thanks to the caviar). Next up, the Wagyu & Truffle Gyozas were an absolute hit! The 12-hour infused Wagyu and dashi dumplings, came with truffle teriyaki sauce, topped with a parmesan crisp. Sweet, earthy and umami, these small parcels packed a punch and Chef Ismael explained the best way to savour them – gyoza and sauce first, crisp second – simply delicious!
For the veggies amongst us, the Portobello Mushrooms, smoked and sautéed in ponzu butter with garlic chips and chives, was a deliciously unpretentious dish with a depth of earthy flavour even the meat-lovers couldn’t resist. Meanwhile, the Miso Eggplant was charred and smoky, with a watermelon reduction and den miso glaze, finished with fluffy parmesan and shichimi togarashi
– balancing sweet, savoury and subtle tanginess.
Moving on to the mains with high expectations, the Black Cod not only met but exceeded them. Marinated for 24 hours in gochujang barbecue sauce and served with vegetable rice, garlic chips and Hajikami pickled ginger, the velvety-sweet, golden-yellow fish flakes melted in the mouth. It paired beautifully with the sauce that carried a gentle hint of heat.
The Chicken Tsukiyaki soon arrived, featuring thin slices of cornfed chicken breast marinated in a herb and miso blend, with roasted cherry tomato sauce, complemented with chives and smoked paprika oil from Spain. With the meat skewered and roasted like a kebab, this Arabic-Japanese medley delivered deliciously charred and umami notes in full abundance.
Then came the Wagyu Tataki Udon – a dish that perfectly showcases KAYA’s Asian-Mediterranean fusion style. Thick, chewy noodles bathed in umami butter sauce were topped with Wagyu ribeye tataki and Oscietra caviar. Little verdant Kinome leaves brought a delicious twist with peppery, minty and citrusy notes – a fresh take on cacio e pepe. Every element in unison and expertly cooked, this dish made us smile – hands down a standout of the meal.
Though happily satiated, the desserts were worth saving room for. The Matcha Pistachio Pudding was a warm, airy fondant made with rice flour, filled with molten pistachio caramel and paired with pistachio ice cream. Light, fluffy and decadent, there were spoon wars on the table for it – suffice to say it was an instant hit!
The Lava Tiramisu reimagined the classic, combining coffee-soaked sponge, caramel crumble, mascarpone and coffee cream, with a caramel tuile and a dusting of cocoa powder to balance the sweetness. Presented in a round casing for a bit of theatre, the dessert fell apart when released, oozing out the goodness for all to share. Tiny pieces of coffee mochi in every bite came as a lovely surprise – a satisfying finale!
KAYA’s new menu captures a creative balance of Mediterranean and Asian flavours, serving flavour and finesse. Whether you’re there for the entertainment, food or both, it’s a place that knows how to put on a show – on the plate and beyond.✤
NEW YORK VIBES AT A HIDDEN CULINARY GEM
Liz O’Reilly discovered speakeasy style and a menu of tasty upscale bites on a trip to The Backroom by The Bossman.
Recently opened at The Flagship, in the heart of Seef, there are two ways to reach The Backroom: either through the official entrance or via the secret door disguised as a bookcase inside The Bossman.
I, of course, chose the latter – after all, who can resist a bit of secret squirrel-style drama? And that dramatic entrance didn’t disappoint, leading through to an atmospheric dining area right out of Prohibition Era New York City. The inspiration is very definitely Big Apple speakeasy; according to owner Abdulla Ahmed, it’s one of his favourite cities. And the influence of a forbidden past can clearly be spotted in the vintage photographs and interesting knick-knacks that add character. Seating is plush and comfortable with black and white patterns and embossed leather, tables are marble in dark green or bronze and low-hanging chandeliers sparkle, casting a glittering glow across the dark-painted walls.
On one wall, embossed with metallic-style wallpaper, signage boards carry messages to diners – ‘Congratulations on your business deal’ and ‘Behind every closed door, there’s a story waiting to be told. Tonight, it begins’.
Overall, the feeling is of being let in on a delicious secret – it’s not that The Backroom is hidden, it just feels like you’ve made a really cool discovery when that hidden door at the rear of The Bossman opens and you see what lies beyond.
With a selection of mocktails ordered (prepared with great aplomb at the bar) and, after taking in the funky details of custom designed plates and cutlery holders, we were happy to see our
Truffle Rocket Salad heading to the table. Abundant fresh rocket leaves were accompanied by truffle mushroom tuile, grated parmesan, candied walnuts and figs, dressed in balsamic vinegar. This was honestly the best possible starter – bright and zingy to refresh from the scorching heat outside, the depth of the truffle’s earthiness was perfectly offset by the crunchy, sweet walnuts. A great indication of the treats to come.
Next up, my absolute favourite dish of the day, Chili Yuzu Shrimps. Crispy fried shrimp on a bed of tartare sauce, drizzled with in-house yuzu chilli sauce and topped with fresh chilli. I love the combination of sweet, slightly briny shrimps with chilli’s heat, and this dish was a shining example of this marriage made in heaven. The shellfish was firm and tasty, the sauce rich, creamy and lightly fiery, gently teasing the taste buds to go back for just one more bite.
Described as ‘like a back-alley bite in downtown Manhattan with a Tokyo soul’, the Charred Beef Skewers with capsicum, glazed in house-made kushiyaki sauce, were delightfully sweet with an umami tang from the topping of sesame seeds and chives. A street food staple, but the quality of the cut belied that origin and gave a considered extra depth.
The Truffle Mushroom Pizza is a house speciality, and rightly so. The dough, crisply blistered at the edges and perfectly chewy in the centre, was adorned with rich white truffle cream, transforming this humble dish into something much more luxurious. Toppings of mozzarella, herbs, mushrooms, truffle mascarpone and parmesan, finished with truffle mushroom tuile rendered this whole experience one of extreme indulgence and,
honestly, this pizza is a deeply satisfying meal all by itself.
After a short digestive break, the first of the mains to arrive was Porcini Steak Risotto – Josper-grilled tenderloin over creamy porcini risotto, finished with parmesan and shimeji mushrooms. Wow, just wow! The mellow meat took on a slight smokiness from the grill and was so tender and juicy, it literally melted on the tongue. The risotto with its creamy render and the earthy, nutty flavour of the mushrooms was a triumph, a perfect combination.
Pesto Gnocchi – a dish of crisp breaded chicken with warm pesto gnocchi – was traditional comfort food in a rich tomato sauce that reminded me of home. And then it was on to the pièce de résistance, the second signature of the day, Steak & Cappelletti.
A substantial chunk of tenderloin, cooked beautifully medium rare – soft and at the same time gamey, rich and oozing deeply flavourful juices – was topped by a toothsome Cappelletti ‘hat’. The pasta, al dente without being hard, encased an indulgent cacio e pepe sauce that flowed over the steak at the touch of a knife. The menu claims this dish is ‘crafted to impress’ and it certainly did that, a symphony of deep, satisfying flavours and contrasting textures that made my taste buds sit up and take notice, even after sampling so many great dishes.
We finished our culinary journey with two desserts, Miso Pistachio Crème Brûlée with raspberries and an orange infused chocolate fondant with hazelnut shard and chocolate mousse, surrounded by chocolate soil and raspberries.
The mild saltiness of the miso and pistachio provided the perfect foil to the richness of the creamy brûlée for an interesting flavour combination. But, for me, the star of this sweet show was the
superb chocolate explosion of the richly melting fondant, the crumbly soil adding texture alongside the sweetness of the raspberries. Deeply indulgent and wholly satisfying – honestly, what more could a girl want?
If I’ve whetted your appetite, head to Seef and discover The Backroom’s secrets for yourself – somehow, I don’t think this one is going to stay under the radar for very long. ✤
LUXURY IN THE HEART OF WEST BAY
We experience the essence of grand hospitality during a stay at The St. Regis Doha.
This weekend, we're checking in for a staycation at, arguably, Qatar's finest address – The St. Regis Doha. This stunning property in West Bay Lagoon area is a mainstay among Qatar's luxury offerings. As soon as we step inside, it’s instantly clear we’re about to have one of the best experiences we've enjoyed in a while.
We walk past a regal lobby with an incredibly striking flower display and cascading chandeliers, and check ourselves in. It's an easy, smooth process and barely minutes later, we enter our abode for the weekend.
The calming palette of creams and navy blues catches our eyes before anything else. The Deluxe Sea View King room is spacious, airy and luxurious. A navy leather headboard adds sophistication to the space and it's interesting how we already feel like royalty.
And things soon get better. The butler service arrives and Yesha introduces herself. Is it too soon to feel this special? Probably not at The St. Regis. Yesha tells us we can order any beverage of our choice as well as laundry services, shoe shining and, probably the best service we've ever heard of at a luxury hotel, packing and unpacking. It’s even better than royalty!
The TV showcases highlights of Doha from dune bashing to information on how to get around. It’s the perfect start to a vacation for anyone visiting or, for long-time residents, just appreciating the beauty of Doha on screen.
We start our evening with dinner at Rivaaj. One of the crowning jewels of the hotel’s culinary repertoire, this Indian fine-dining restaurant is impressive at the very first glance. The space feels like a cocoon of modern elegance, with refined interiors and Indian-themed motifs everywhere. The
sweeping ceiling is accented by circular lighting, casting a warm glow. Golden vertical slats create little private spaces, without feeling closed off.
We start with a few classics such as Raj Kachori and the result is art at our table and in our mouths. Another mentionworthy starter is the Wagyu Pav – with homemade bread and meat so tender it melts like butter. What makes this dish special is the Rechad marinade, a famous Goan spice paste. Everything feels elevated but really nostalgic. The live Bollywood music adds comfort and we get lost in some magical tunes.
For mains, the Coconut Shell Baked Lobster Curry is probably one of the best curries we've tried – rich, creamy and packed with coastal flavours. They say you can tell how good an Indian restaurant is by just tasting its Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani. We’re pleased to report these dishes exceed our expectations. There is no compromise on taste and each dish is masterfully presented.
Chef Satish knows exactly what he's doing. He's the king of flavours and that's putting it humbly. We end the night with a decadent Mango Rasmalai and a Karak Crème Brûlée –and we highly recommend both.
An epic Thursday night concludes with an unforgettable night view of Doha, as we draw the curtains and tuck into the softest mattress we've experienced for a very long time. The crispy white linens feel like clouds and the master control panel is right by our bedside. We sink in and turn off for the night.
We awake to the most beautiful sunrise. Qatar's turquoise blue waters and brilliant sunshine through the floor-toceiling windows fill our room with light and happiness. The views are unmatched and call for a cup of coffee from the machine at the mini bar while soaking in the views from the couch in the very spacious seating area.
As much as we'd like to spend the whole morning here, breakfast is waiting for us at Fauchon Paris Qatar. The fuchsia pinks, cream tones and delicate leaves floating from the ceiling create a whimsical ambience. This chic Parisian café is the perfect start to the day, especially if you're having the signature blend Green Tea with Strawberries and a special Fauchon flavour. You'll have to try it to find out what it is. The breakfast is generous and really highlights French excellence with delicate pastries, perfectly cooked eggs and an excellent cappuccino to wash everything down. Next stop – Guerlain Spa for an indulgent morning treatment. We’re scheduled for the Imperial Relaxing Massage. Dizhar introduces the spa and shows us around, then our therapist escorts us to a luxurious room. The next hour passes by faster than we'd like. Our therapist is an expert in detecting areas of tension and masterfully switching between light and medium pressures to relax the muscles. We're not ready to leave and want to spend some time in the Jacuzzi, but another dining affair awaits. So, we quickly check out the perfume collection, available for purchase, before heading out. If you've lived in Doha long enough, you’ll surely have heard
of The Grand Brunch. During cooler times, the terrace at Vine Restaurant fully opens up for one of the city's best afternoon dining experiences.
We sit indoors this time, and sample all the brunch favourites.
The Seafood Bar piques our interest with oysters, lobster, mussels, tiger prawns and all that good stuff. A large open display fridge reads St. Regis Signature Morning Delights and we're delighted to see mini sandwiches. We grab a few and some healthy options to go along with them –balance is everything.
We try some pasta from the live station and a few more signature delicacies before we finish off with mini desserts from a massive sweet buffet.
Post brunch, there's only one thing to do. Enjoy Doha's golden hours from our gorgeous room. We try that luxury butler service and have our clothes ironed in time for a much-anticipated steak dinner.
Astor Grill has always been one of Doha's best steakhouses but, ever since the revamp, the venue has really been uplifted to a new level. The space is so stylish, sleek and contemporary yet still reminiscent of a dark-toned diner.
The pickled eggplant butter with sourdough and brioche is a really impressive way to show us what they've planned for our dining experience tonight. Since we're at a steakhouse, our choice of mains is clear. The Wagyu Tenderloin is 200 grams of buttery soft meat with great marbling. The Potato Millefeuille that sits alongside
is an absolutely perfect carb creation. Crispy edges, waferthin layers and the essence of Rosemary hidden in between every strip of perfectly cooked potato – what a treat. Top service from our host Oscar and an incredibly indulgent chocolate dessert later, we are ready to retire for the night and hit the sack.
It's our last day of relaxation and we start off with a breakfast at the all-day diner. The sweetest hostess Rahma introduces herself and takes our coffee and eggs order – both of which can be customised from the breakfast menu. We prefer the breakfast buffet for everything else – it looks smashing. It is the last leg and we're one afternoon experience away from checking out. We choose the lobby lounge, famous nationwide for its afternoon teas.
Sarab Lounge is a true gem. Floor-to-ceiling windows, comfortable and beautifully upholstered couches and a manager who is really on top of exceptional guest experiences. The summer set is full of vivid colours and vibrant flavours. Sweet and savoury bites are beautifully placed on a high tea set and we dig in. There's a lot to say about everything from the Raspberry Macaron to the iced tea served alongside it, but we have to focus on the highlight – Orange Scones with clotted cream, strawberry jam and, our absolute favourite accompaniment, lemon curd. This is the true taste of summer and we can't think of a better way to conclude our memorable time at this iconic property.
The St. Regis Doha isn't a regular resort. It's a landmark and a destination in itself. Once you check in, you'll never want to leave. From Parisian cafés and global franchises to homegrown dining brands and even its own tea blends, there is a world of sophistication and experiences to enjoy here. A stay at this immaculate property is a step into timeless luxury, contemporary opulence and promises an experience like no other. In our view, this really is Qatar's finest address. ✤
GASTRO JOURNEYS
Skip the usual sightseeing and explore the world through your taste buds! These trips are all about eating, cooking and learning how food shapes a place. Whether it’s a rustic farm lunch in Portugal or a honey fair in Wales, each destination serves something worth the journey.
One of the best things about travelling is the dishes that land on your plate. Food says a lot about a place – its history, culture and how its people live. From market walks and cooking classes to farm visits and restaurant tours, these kinds of experiences go beyond the usual sightseeing and give you a proper taste of a place. Whether you’re picking, prepping or just passing dishes around, here are a few gastro getaways worth planning your next holiday around.
PORTUGAL
Some of Portugal’s best food experiences happen far from city restaurants. To see that first-hand, leave the urban hustle behind and venture into the countryside where farm experiences offer a different kind of meal –one you’ve helped create. Head north to the Douro Valley, where you can help prepare a classic Portuguese meal in a vineyard kitchen before sitting down to eat it overlooking the vines. Near Évora in the Alentejo region, farm-to-table experiences offer rustic dining in traditional settings. Follow a route through agroforestry plots then sit down to enjoy dishes like caldo verde (a popular soup) or vegetable bean stew served with bread and olives grown on the farm. Along the coast in Comporta, small organic farms provide outdoor cooking classes where you can pick your own seasonal vegetables with a chef instructor, before preparing the meal together. Some farms offer bread baking, cheese- or jam-making, while others guide you through herb gardens or teach you how to press your own olive oil. Lunch is usually outdoors and shared with the farmers, often with a bottle of local grape – not paired, not explained, just poured. It’s all very relaxed, very uncurated. What you get depends on the season and the people you meet, but that’s part of the appeal. It’s a different kind of culinary trip, one where you trade restaurant reservations for soil under your fingernails and a long, honest meal. GO: VISIT WWW.VISITPORTUGAL.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.
SPAIN
If there’s a country built for food-focussed travel, it’s Spain. You don’t need a strict itinerary, just a few streets, an appetite and maybe a guide who knows where the good stuff is. Tapas tours are popular in Madrid, Seville and San Sebastián, each with its own speciality. Some focus on traditional dishes, such as patatas bravas, jamón and anchovies on toast, while others highlight small producers and seasonal bites. These aren’t commercialised, headsetstyle tours; they’re informal and often led by locals who genuinely love the food. You’ll walk, eat, talk, repeat. Market tours are equally worth it. In Barcelona, La Boqueria is busy but still full of life, with colourful produce, seafood stalls and paper cones of meat and cheese to eat on the go. In Valencia or Málaga, you’ll find quieter markets where vendors talk through what’s in season and tastings often

happen at standing counters between locals on lunch break. Some tours include grape or olive oil tastings; others end with a casual meal. If you care about how people eat, not just what’s on the plate, Spain’s food tours are a straightforward way to learn, taste and spend your day well.

UNITED KINGDOM
The UK’s food festival scene comes alive in September, with weekends packed full of regional flavours, pop-up kitchens and local produce. In South Wales, the Great British Food Festival (September 6 to 7) sets up in Margam Park with live cooking, cake offs and plenty to graze on –from award-winning pies to vegan street food and locally brewed ciders. Later in the month, Thoresby Park hosts the Festival of Food & Drink (September 20 to 21), with a bigger market-style feel and a wide range of artisan food producers, pop-up cafés, bars, special guest TV chefs, crafts and homewares. For something quieter, Conwy Honey Fair (September 13) is a one-day event in North Wales dating back hundreds of years! You’ll find jars of honey, handmade beeswax goods and small-scale traders who actually keep the bees. Long-time favourites like the Ludlow Food Festival in Shropshire and Abergavenny Food Festival in Wales also draw loyal crowds for their mix of top chefs, tastings and strong community feel. Beyond these, smaller food fairs pop up in town squares and gardens throughout the country in September; they’re not flashy but full of foodie fun and run by people who care about what they’re making. If you like your trips slow and grounded, this one’s worth it.

VIETNAM
Food in Vietnam doesn’t wait. It’s fast, fresh and constantly on the move – wrapped in banana leaves at street corners, ladled from bubbling pots in narrow alleyways and grilled over open flames outside cafés the size of a shoebox. But if you want to go beyond just eating, there are plenty of ways to learn how it all comes together. In Hanoi, start with morning market tours that give you the basics, walk through aisles of herbs, live fish and mystery snacks you’ll get to taste and guess. Follow that with a hands-on class at a home-style kitchen, learning how to make dishes like pho, bun cha or bánh xèo from scratch. Hoi An is known for more rural cooking sessions, some of which start with a boat ride and include rice paper making or fishing crabs from coconut groves before you cook. Ho Chi Minh City is better for after-dark tours, often on motorbikes, zigzagging through the chaos to find stalls selling sizzling skewers, broken rice and bánh mì (a typical Vietnamese sandwich) done a dozen different ways. Whether you’re in the capital, the countryside or the southern sprawl, Vietnam’s food scene is busy, hands-on and full of contrast and heat. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of the flavours – and probably a new obsession with fish sauce. ✤ GO: VISIT VIETNAM.TRAVEL FOR MORE INFORMATION.

FOOD AS AN ART FORM
Award-winning photographer, George Mathew, is an exceptional visual storyteller, with more than 24 years of experience in food, portrait and commercial photography. Apple Sharma caught up with him to learn what ignites his passion for food photography, dos and don’ts for amateurs and what makes an image stand out!
George Mathew
fact: How did your passion for photography begin and what inspired you to specialise in food photography?
GM: My passion for photography began at home, learning the basics from my father, who was a serious amateur. Those early experiences sparked my fascination with how light and perspective can transform the ordinary into something extraordinary. Over time I realised I’m not just a storyteller but also a technician interested in mastering the technical side of photography, particularly, the ability to shape light. This balance allows me to work in my own narrative style, while adapting to any creative vision of my client. This balance is essential, especially in food photography, where precision and artistry meet. For me each dish is a story, and my craft is to bring it to life.
fact: You’ve worked across food, portraits, fashion and more. Which area speaks to you the most and best reflects your style?
GM: I’ve worked across portraits, jewellery, automotive, architecture and commercial projects and honestly, each has its own challenges and figuring those out is what keeps me excited. Food photography stands out for me – every dish has texture, colour and a story – kind of like a portrait with character. Being able to find the right perspective and bring out the mood is what makes it fun. At the end of the day, it’s about creating images that feel alive and make people connect with them.
fact: Food photography is an art form and notoriously tricky. What’s your secret for bringing dishes to life?
GM: For me food photography is really about using the right light to bring every ingredient on the plate to life. The textures, colours
and all the little details tell a story, and getting the light right makes all the difference. I pay attention to the small touches – a garnish, a drizzle of sauce, even the natural shine on something – because those little things make the dish feel real and inviting. The goal is to make the image look delicious and capture the feel of the food, so people can almost taste it just by looking.
fact: As a judge for the World Food Photography Awards, what makes an image stand out for you?
GM: It’s my third year judging the World Food Photography Awards, and for me, what really makes an image stand out is personality. These days, we see trending styles being copied over and over, which makes it harder for a shot to stand out. Carefully crafted images always excite me, especially when the photographer plays with light to bring out textures and mood. I’m also drawn to shots that capture action that are hard to notice with the naked eye, whether it’s steam rising, flames or a splash.
fact: You’ve worked with so many creative teams and clients. Can you share a funny or unexpected moment from a shoot that has stuck with you?
GM: Usually, for commercial shoots we’re racing against time to get the visuals right but there’s always someone on set who brings a bit of energy and makes everyone laugh. It’s hard to pinpoint just one person and, honestly, some of the funniest moments are best kept as our crew’s personal jokes.
fact: What advice would you give to amateurs starting out –any dos and don’ts, or clichés to avoid?
GM: For anyone starting out, my biggest advice is that expensive gear isn’t everything. The best camera is the one you have access to; it’s more important to focus on vision and technique. Understanding light is key and equally important is learning the business side of photography – working with clients, managing projects and delivering results. Experiment and play to find your own style but avoid copying trends too much – originality always stands out. Don’t have the attitude of ‘I’ll fix it in post (editing)’. Pay attention to details, learn from mistakes and, most importantly, enjoy the process.
fact: If you could collaborate with any photographer and capture any subject or dish, who and what would it be?
GM: Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the true meaning of freedom, and it’s something I’d love to explore visually. I’m hoping to collaborate with talented photographers and creatives here in Bahrain to put together an exhibition reflecting this theme. It’s a personal project that’s been brewing in my head for a while and I’m waiting for the right inspiration to translate these ideas into images. For me, it’s about capturing emotion, narrative and perspective – creating work that makes people stop, reflect and connect on a deeper level. ✤

In Chengdu, China, a surprising well-being fad is taking shape: adults using pacifiers. Not for babies, but for stress relief, sleep struggles and even smoking recovery. These adult-sized binkies are selling fast, with over 2,000 sold every month. One satisfied customer described it as ‘high quality, soft and comforting’. Of course, not everyone is on board. Dentists are warning that hours of dummy sucking
could have consequences. Dr Tang Caomin, a local dentist, says using one for more than three hours a day may start shifting teeth within a year. A toothy smile probably isn’t what stressed-out users are aiming for. Yet, for many, the urge to suck away tension with a giant pacifier has proven oddly soothing. Strange? Absolutely. Effective? Possibly. As far as coping mechanisms go, it’s certainly one of the more eye-catching ones.
Creepy Crawly
Residents around Wallasey, a small beach town in the UK, have been perplexed by a mysterious figure dubbed ‘Pantherman’. Clad head-to-toe in a tight black cat suit, he’s been spotted prowling near secluded paths and a local Harvester pub, crawling under fences, meowing, growling and occasionally startling passers-by, though no harm has come to anyone. One dog walker described a night-time encounter: her terrier barked, she shone a flashlight
and there he was, crawling up a hill on all fours. “I felt more confused than scared,” she admitted. Locals are divided. Some label him ‘harmless’ and ‘just having a laugh’, while others are unnerved by the feline showmanship. Merseyside’s police and crime commissioner have urged anyone feeling unsettled to report sightings. Whether prankster, performance artist or true local legend in the making, the Pantherman certainly has caught everyone’s attention.
Common Sense is Not So Common
When smoke began filling the cabin of American Airlines Flight 3023 in Denver earlier this summer, passengers were told to do the obvious: get out, fast. Instead, several dimwits decided their carry-ons were worth risking lives for, dragging trolley bags and backpacks down the inflatable slides like they were more than a million bucks. Footage shows one traveller clutching luggage in one hand and a child in the other,
tumbling down the slide in a scene that safety experts say could have ended far worse. Aviation authorities always stress that evacuations must happen within 90 seconds, where every second wasted on baggage makes survival harder. No one was seriously injured, but the viral clips have reignited frustration over passengers ignoring safety briefings. Because really, if the plane’s on fire, maybe, just maybe, your designer handbag can wait.
