Bahrain’s biggest sailing event kicks off this month with four competitive classes and strong participation from across the world.
The Kingdom will once again host one of the region’s key sailing events, as the 31st Al Bareh International Regatta returns from June 19 to 23. Organised by the Bahrain Maritime Sports Association (BMSA) in collaboration with the Arab Sailing Federation, the regatta will take place at Bahrain Sailing Club, Al Jazayer Beach, Zallaq, under the patronage of the General Sports Authority. The event will be graced by Shaikh Khalifa bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, President of Bahrain Maritime Sports Association and the Arab Sailing Federation.
This year’s edition features four classes: Optimist U16 (boys and girls under 16), ILCA 4 U17 (sailors under 17), ILCA 6 (Open) and ILCA 7 (Olympic class). Each class will compete in a 10-race series, with prizes awarded to the top three finishers in each category. Registration opens on June 19, followed by four days of racing from June 20 to 23.
The regatta draws young and experienced sailors from across the region and beyond. Last year 63 participants competed from 11 countries, including Singapore, Pakistan,
Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Morocco, Poland, Great Britain and Bahrain.
High-profile international competitors include familiar names, such as 2008 Olympic sailor Adel Khalid from the UAE and Kuwait’s Ameena Shah, who represented her country at the 2024 Olympics.
Bahrain’s national team will field 20 sailors across all four classes. The team includes some of the Arab region’s leading names, including 15-year-old Malak Aldoseri (Optimist), Dawood Abdulla (ILCA6 overall), Waleed Daraan (ILCA6 youth) and Khalifa Aldoseri (ILCA4).
Whether you’re a sailing enthusiast or just curious about the sport, the regatta offers a chance to see some of the region’s best young talent in action, right by the sea. ✤
Designed to tackle the challenge of extreme heat, Bahrain’s award-winning pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia blends innovation with tradition.
The Bahrain pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia in Venice, Italy, made a strong impression, earning the Golden Lion for Best National Participation. Titled Heatwave, the pavilion is located in the Artiglierie section of the Arsenale (the main site of the exhibition) and responds to this year’s overarching theme: Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective. The Kingdom's participation was commissioned by His Excellency Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA).
Curated and designed by architect Andrea Faraguna (who also led the research), Heatwave presents an architectural proposal to address the growing challenge of rising global temperatures. Drawing inspiration from traditional Bahraini cooling techniques, it introduces a passive outdoor cooling installation designed to promote environmental resilience and social sustainability, particularly in countries at the forefront of extreme heat.
The design incorporates a geothermal well and a solar chimney, connecting underground humidity with exterior airflow. Conceived as a modular structure, the installation is adaptable to a variety of urban settings. The pavilion explores the role of passive cooling and shading systems in mitigating heat and underscores the intersection of
climate, architecture and social equity.
Accepting the Golden Lion award in the presence of leading architects and senior officials and alongside members of the participating team, HE Shaikh Khalifa said: “It is a great honour to receive the Golden Lion on behalf of the Kingdom of Bahrain. We are grateful to La Biennale di Venezia for providing this global platform that enables the exchange of ideas and initiatives with countries around the world. The National Pavilion, Heatwave, addresses not only the environmental challenges facing the Kingdom but also those confronting the world at large. Through this concept, we aimed to shed light on these issues in an innovative manner.”
This marks Bahrain’s second Golden Lion (the first came in 2010) and its eighth showing at the Biennale. To accompany the exhibition, BACA is releasing a publication featuring numerical analysis, expert essays and field surveys to extend the research impact beyond the installation itself. The ongoing exhibition runs until November 23. ✤ GO: FOLLOW
From arts and design to digital tech and heritage, Bahrain’s new national initiative is putting creative industries at the centre of its future growth strategy.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization - Investment and Technology Promotion Office (UNIDOITPO) – Bahrain has announced the launch of the Orange Economy Year – a national initiative celebrating creativity as a driver of economic growth, in partnership with the RAK Art Foundation.
Unveiled at a recent press conference at the RAK Art Foundation, the initiative reinforces the Kingdom’s commitment to fostering innovation, cultural leadership and creative entrepreneurship globally. The Orange Economy (also called the creative economy) spans art, culture, media, design, technology and heritage industries, contributing more than USD2 trillion to global GDP and supporting 50 million jobs worldwide.
At the heart of the initiative is the Bahrain Global Call 2025: Creative Orange Economy, a competition inviting entrepreneurs, artists and innovators to submit sustainable business ideas. Open to participants worldwide, the initiative offers access to mentorship, exposure and potential global partnerships. Categories include Eco-friendly Production, Digital Innovation, Cultural Heritage and a special category for school and university students to nurture young talent. Applications are open until September 1, with finalists recognised at an awards event in December.
The Orange Economy Year will also feature conferences, exhibitions, community engagement activities and
workshops focussed on encouraging innovation, preserving cultural heritage and connecting Bahrain’s talent with international markets. Playing a central role, the RAK Art Foundation will activate its educational arm, The Art Station, as a platform for creation, learning and crosscultural exchange.
Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Founder of the RAK Art Foundation, said: “We are delighted to support the UNIDO in launching the Orange Economy Year. This collaboration reflects the RAK Art Foundation’s ongoing mission to support local talent, promote cultural dialogue and position creativity at the core of sustainable economic development.”
Dr. Hashim Hussein, Head of UNIDO-ITPO Bahrain, added: “This collaboration underscores the significant role of creativity in fostering economic growth, innovation and sustainable development. By promoting cultural leadership and nurturing entrepreneurship, we aspire to position Bahrain as a global epicentre for the Orange Economy, thereby demonstrating the Kingdom’s dedication to inclusive growth and economic diversification. ✤
National heritage and musical nostalgia take centre stage this month with a museum exhibition and an evening of orchestral favourites from animated classics.
The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) presents two standout events this June – an ongoing exhibition rooted in national heritage and a concert that brings animated classics to the stage.
Running until June 30 at the Bahrain National Museum, Cultural Assets: Ibrahim Yousif Hassan Al Hassan Collection offers a rare look at more than a century of local history through artefacts donated by the Al Hassan family. The exhibition traces the family's long-standing role in Muharraq’s cultural life, from pearl trading to education, including their involvement in establishing Al Hedaya Al Khalifiya School in 1919. Items on display date back to their ancestor, great grandfather Al Tawash (pearl merchant) Hassan bin Ibrahim Ahmed Al Hassan (1887–1982). The exhibition is a result of BACA’s initiative to enhance the role of the local community in preserving and promoting Bahrain’s cultural heritage. It is open daily from 8am to 8pm, except Tuesdays.
Later in the month, the Bahrain Philharmonic Orchestra takes the stage at Bahrain National Theatre with Symphonies of
Animation on June 27. Led by Bahraini Maestro Dr Mubarak Najem, director of the Police Band and founder of the Bahrain Music Institute, the performance features music from well-known animated films.
Founded in 2022 by Maestro Mubarak Najem, the orchestra comprises more than 100 talented musicians and choir members and is a vibrant cultural initiative that reflects the vision of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister to establish the Kingdom as a beacon of culture and creativity.
The concert is open to those aged eight and above, with tickets available at Virgin Megastore, starting at BD5.5. Both events reflect BACA’s ongoing efforts to highlight Bahrain’s cultural identity. From museum visits to live music at the theatre, it’s a good month to make the most of what’s on. ✤
Bahrain Cinema Club opens its doors for an evening of powerful short films and conversation, presented by Cineolio.
Film fans, mark your calendars as Cineolio’s Cinenights returns on June 11, with a curated selection of short films from around the world. The event takes place at Bahrain Cinema Club in Juffair from 7pm to 9pm, and entry is free. This edition features four international films from Brazil, Iran, Syria and Egypt – each offering a distinct take on storytelling. Avalons (2011), a Brazilian short by Carlos Eduardo Nogueira, revisits Mediaeval manuscripts to tell a dark tale of revenge and royal intrigue. In Fragments of a Revolution (2020) – an experimental film about narrations – Director Sahand Sarhaddi reflects on the 1979 Iran revolution through the lens of two journal photos, capturing the violence of the mass purge that took place in universities.
The screening continues with One of Us Left the Photo (2021), directed by the Malas Twins, which explores political and personal tensions between twin brothers – one a refugee in France, the other newly arrived from Syria. Rounding off the night is Tea (2022) by Egyptian filmmaker Ayman Sousa, where a seemingly simple task of making himself a cup of tea during a night shift, takes on unexpected drama. All films are subtitled in English, and the evening wraps up with an open discussion. ✤
Bahrain’s loudest night is back as Metal Fest makes a comeback with international heavyweights and a rising local act.
The region’s growing metal scene will get a serious boost as international and local acts hit the stage this month. Metal Fest Bahrain returns, with a killer lineup that brings together international legends and homegrown talent for one high-energy night at Diggers, Delmon Hotel, on June 12.
Leading the charge are Krisiun, the Brazilian ‘Kings of Extreme Metal’, known for their relentless, fast-paced sound – bringing it to Bahrain for the first time. Formed in 1990 by brothers Alex Camargo (bass, vocals), Moyses Kolesne (guitars) and Max Kolesne (drums), the band have released 12 studio albums and have been described as the ‘flag bearer of the rainforest extreme style’. They’ll be joined by Belgium’s Carnation, known for their unique blend of old-school and modern extreme metal. For the last decade, the band have found that rare balance – staying true to the raw spirit of the genre, while injecting a fresh and contemporary approach. Their latest album, Cursed Mortality (2023), saw them expand their horizons further and add new melodic flavours to their sound.
Representing Bahrain is Necrosin, a thrash metal trio that express their love for the Thrash/Speed Metal of the ‘80s and pay homage to legendary bands, such as Slayer, early Sepultura and Bolt Thrower. Formed in 2018 by two veterans of the Bahrain metal scene, Mohammad Tael and Mahmood Al Ansari, and joined later by Omar Zainal, the band released their first EP in 2023 and played their debut live show the same year, opening for Incantation in Dubai.
Fresh from their win at the Wacken Metal Battle Middle East competition earlier this year, the band is set to be the first ever to represent Bahrain at Germany’s prestigious Wacken Open Air Festival this July.
Metal Fest is sure to be a one-of-a-kind event not to be missed. Tickets are available on manama.platinumlist.net and priced at BD5. Doors open at 6pm and entry is for 21+. ✤

Assummer rolls in, the water comes calling – and Bahrain answers with a lineup of water sports to match every mood. Think Jet Skis, eFoils, paddleboards, kayaks and everything in between. Whether you're zipping across the waves chasing a thrill or simply enjoying a lazy float under the sun, there’s no shortage of ways to stay cool. We’ve rounded up some of the most exciting activities to make the most of the season – take the plunge and explore what’s in store…
A newer addition to Bahrain’s water sports scene, eFoiling is an exhilarating water sport that’s gaining immense popularity. Similar to surfing but easier to learn, the motorised board lifts out of the water as you build speed, creating the feeling of gliding just above the surface. It takes a bit of coordination, like surfing or paddleboarding, but once you find your footing, it’s fast, fun and seriously addictive. Often promoted as SiFly – one of the branded electric hydrofoil surfboards – various water sports providers offer rentals and eFoil sessions by certified instructors. Some of the more thrilling water activities to try are the Jetovator (the world's first water-propelled flying bike) and X-Jets jetpacks (one of the best water jetpacks for beginners to advanced users). The former lets you ride a motorised, single-seat watercraft that rises above the surface using powerful water propulsion. With handlebars for control and the ability to twist, turn and hover above the waves, it feels like a cross between a Jet Ski and a flight simulator. The latter provides a similar rush, using jetpacks typically connected to a Jet Ski via a long hose that propels pressurised water through nozzles on the jetpack, lifting you vertically into the air. Although both look impressive and slightly daunting, they’re fairly easy to learn once you get the hang of it. Although, not widely available, they can be found at Bahrain Beach Bay Resort in Zallaq, provided by Sea Land Tours and Water Sports. Currently undergoing annual inspections and services, the equipment will be available from July, with trained instructors on hand to guide first-timers.

Steady wind conditions and open waters have made Bahrain a reliable spot for kitesurfing. Combining elements from several board sports, it requires balance, control and a bit of nerve –but that’s part of the appeal. You’ll often spot kites flying over popular spots like Amwaj Kite Beach, Bahrain Bay, Budaiya Beach, Nurana and the stretch near Bahrain Yacht Club – all are regular kiting areas. Skate Shack remains the go-to on the local scene for gear, lessons and ongoing support – currently offering a complimentary four-hour lesson with purchases of kitesurfing gear and kitesurfing training at BD25/hour, including equipment. The season typically runs until July and resumes in September, once wind conditions return.

Still one of the top picks for water sports in Bahrain, Jet Skiing offers fast-paced fun and a rush you can’t get on land. It’s an easy way to get out on the water and enjoy a bit of freedom, whether you’re speeding across the open sea or weaving near the shore. From marinas and beaches to resorts and islands (basically anything near water), all are popular spots. Both first timers and experienced riders are well catered for, with various tour operators and hotel beach clubs providing professional Jet Ski rental services with equipment and instruction.

Towable rides have become a go-to for groups looking for something active and fun to do on the water. Whether it’s the classic banana boat, a wide sofa-style float or a towing tube, the idea is simple: hold on tight as a speedboat pulls you across the sea. It’s simple, social and full of laughs, especially as the ride picks up speed and carves through the waves. These towable experiences are available at several locations, each with its own setup and style, and are great fun to do in a big group – be it family or friends.

Another fun way to ride the waves is wakesurfing. Similar to wakeboarding, it’s all about surfing a wake created by a boat but without holding onto a rope once you're up. Unlike wakeboarding, it’s done at slower speeds and feels closer to traditional surfing, but the waves are controlled and consistent. It’s a good way to build board skills without having to chase real surf. In Bahrain, wakesurfing is available through various water sports providers who run guided sessions with all the required equipment and training, suitable for beginner and advanced levels.

If you’re after speed, balance and a bit of airtime, wakeboarding ticks all the boxes. It involves riding a board while being pulled by a boat, often performing jumps and tricks along the way. Al Dar Islands is a favourite area for this, thanks to its calmer conditions. You’ll find local operators, such as Wake Boat providing guided sessions with experienced drivers and coaches with all the gear included. Bahrain Wake, located in Durrat Al Bahrain, is the island’s cable wake park, where a cable system replaces the boat and pulls riders along the water. They cater to all levels, offering single, double and full-day packages, along with all the equipment.

If you’re looking for something slightly easier to manage, kneeboards offer a more accessible starting point for those new to water sports. Kneeboarding keeps you closer to the water from the start, with your knees strapped to the board as the boat pulls you along. It’s a fun, controlled way to enjoy the water.

For a more social and easy-going activity, the doughnut boat ride at Bahrain Bay is a fun way to spend time on the water. Run by Dough Bahrain, these round boats are fitted with a centre table, giving the whole setup the look of a floating picnic. It’s more about the company than the speed and these slow-moving rides are ideal for cruising comfortably with friends while enjoying a New York-style pizza on board with a fabulous view. For something even more laid-back, the 360 Chill Out ride offered by Joy of Life features a circular float with a drinks caddy in the middle, designed for lounging in calm water with refreshments close at hand.

Stand up paddle boarding has become a common sight on Bahrain’s shores, and for good reason. Balancing on a large board while using a single paddle, it’s a calming activity that lets you move quietly across the water. It’s also great for building strength and coordination, and some even use the boards for outdoor yoga sessions. Certain operators also provide larger Mega SUPs for a group experience.

Kayaking remains a favourite across Bahrain for those seeking a slower pace on the water. Whether you're out on your own or with a group, the island's calm seas make it an easy and enjoyable choice for all ages. Paddling through the Tubli mangroves offers a quiet escape, while areas like Al Dar let you explore more open waters and sandy shores. You’ll find rentals and guided tours across multiple locations including Bahrain Bay, with options suitable for every experience level.

Pedal boats are an easy way to enjoy the water without needing any experience. With space for two or more people, they’re a great option for couples, families or friends who just want to cruise along the shoreline and take in the views at their own pace. Bahrain Bay, Marassi Beach and Water Garden City Beach are popular spots, offering a calm and easy-going outing. Water biking, on the other hand, brings a slightly more active twist. These bikes are designed to float, allowing you to cycle over the surface of the sea with minimal effort. Water biking is available at Water Garden City Beach and at Al Dar Water Sports Centre, where sessions can be booked directly.

Bahrain’s small nearby islands offer a welcome change of pace and are easily reached by boat. Jarada Island is a popular choice for a quick escape and trips can be booked through many local operators. This tiny sandbar emerges during low tide, creating a remote stretch of beach surrounded by shallow turquoise waters. It’s perfect for a swim, a walk or simply to soak up the sun before the tide returns. Al Dar Islands, just off the coast of Sitra, is a more developed option. Visitors can rent beach huts or chalets, grab a bite at the on-site restaurants or spend the day kayaking, paddleboarding or playing beach volleyball. Boats run regularly from the Al Dar booking point at Sitra Fisherman Port. For something more remote, Hawar Island offers quiet beaches and a chance to spot unique wildlife. Recently opened Hawar Resort by Mantis offers a luxury stay surrounded by a thriving wildlife sanctuary. Find It Here: Delma Marine, Island Tours & Activities, Seamasters

FACT drove the new Genesis GV70 across the island and discovered true prestige is no longer exclusively European.
In recent years, the luxury midsize SUV market has become a highly competitive segment. Thanks to Genesis Bahrain, FACT experienced a new contender in this division, the GV70 Royal Sport 3.5T. This bold and well-rounded creation is equally lavish and cutting-edge – a clear reminder that luxury and high-end tech is no longer the sole domain of traditional European marques.
Welcomed by Genesis Bahrain, we felt like we were entering a first-class lounge when arriving to pick up the GV70. From the first point of contact, we experienced the high-end service that the dealership is renowned for, a mark of attentive luxury that was echoed in every aspect of the product.
Starting at the front end, the brand’s signature crest grille in dark chrome makes a strong statement, edged by distinctive Micro Lens Array (MLA) headlamps. These combined with the gentle curve of the elongated bonnet, bestow the GV70 with a modernistic elegance. Additional dark chrome detailing, extending to the side sills and boot lid moulding, create a sleek and upscale quality.
At the flanks, 21-inch sport wheels wrapped in Michelin tyres, featuring red, four-piston brake calipers, enhance the vehicle’s commanding presence. At the rear, we were greeted by dual single mufflers, adding sporty flair while hinting at the GV70’s performance pedigree.
Extra exterior touches include dynamic front welcome lights and Genesis logo puddle lamps that round out a grand yet well-balanced exterior design.
Shifting our focus to the interior, we were enveloped by the ambience that awaited us. Combining modern luxury with thoughtful craftsmanship, Genesis has created a cabin sure to please even those with the most discerning automotive palates. Welcomed by Nappa leather seats with diamond quilting, we felt well-supported as we took in the premium environment. Real carbon fibre garnishes accent the cabin, adding a high-end sporty touch. The highlighting is in suede, contributing a rich, tactile feel to the upper surfaces, reinforcing the sense of tailored luxury.
The driver-oriented layout of the cockpit includes a crystal dial-type, shift-by-wire system and a sporty, power-adjustable, D-shaped memory steering wheel, complete with paddle shifters. The car’s clean feel is enhanced by a digital, frameless ECM rearview mirror, while the overall interior vibe can be customised via the ambient mood lighting. Finer details include an aroma fragrance system, UV-C console sterilisation and rear door manual curtains, exhibiting Genesis’ dedication to occupant well-being.
The GV70 Royal Sport houses some impressive tech. At the centre of the well-designed dash lies a standout 27-inch OLED display, serving as both an instrument cluster and navigation hub.
The interface is sharp, intuitive and highly functional. Notably, the GV70 features side cameras that automatically show the turning side’s view on the central gauge display when using the indicator.
The car’s connectivity is seamless with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while a wireless phone charging tray adds to in-car smartphone convenience. Fingerprint authorisation for personalised settings and engine start, along with a touch-type AC control panel, showcase a level of digital integration that rivals the best in class. Genesis has made comfort a priority. The Ergo Motion front seats adapt to body contours, offering heating and ventilation for all passengers, plus active adjustments that reduce fatigue during long drives. To keep you comfortable during the hot Bahraini summers, a three-zone automatic climate control system has been installed ensuring every corner of the cabin stays cool.
Engaging the ignition, we admired the rumbling sound of the Royal Sport 3.5T’s Twin Turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine. Capable of delivering 375hp and 530Nm of torque, this potent powertrain
is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and features an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system as standard. Able to accelerate from 0-100km/h in under five seconds and achieve a top speed of around 260km/h, this mid-sized luxury SUV is much more than a highway lounger.
Taking this beauty out onto the tarmac, we immediately felt the brisk acceleration on offer, along with the SUV’s confident handling. Drive Mode Select allowed us to fine-tune the dynamics of the vehicle, meaning we could indulge in relaxed cruising or a more spirited performance when slipping into Sport+ Mode.
We found the steering to be responsive and communicative, ensuring complete control of the driving experience.
Even at higher speeds, we had faith in the solid braking system.
Thanks to the well-balanced feel of the chassis, we could weave our way along any roads, confident in the car’s ability to stay planted around corners. It offered great balance between sporty feedback and on-road comfort.
The GV70 Royal Sport is defined by its electronically controlled preview suspension and electronic systems that help maintain traction and composure even when pushed through tighter bends. Combined with the before mentioned front monobloc four-piston brakes, this SUV delivers a secure and thrilling ride that is both poised and powerful. Adding yet another touch of class was the serene nature of the drive, thanks to the top-notch cabin insulation.
It soon became apparent that Genesis had ensured very high levels of safety in its latest offering.
The GV70 boasts an array of advanced features that support and alert the driver, even acting autonomously when the situation demands it. Ensuring extensive protection is an eight-airbag system, while the suite of driver assistance technologies rivals brands of the highest pedigree. These include Smart Cruise Control, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Parking CollisionAvoidance Assist, Remote Smart Parking Assist and a Surround View Monitor.
Furthermore, the digital attention warning system continuously monitors the driver for signs of distraction or fatigue.
The GV70 Royal Sport 3.5T stands as a testament to Genesis’ premium car building abilities. Delivering a thoughtful design, advanced engineering and impressive performance, this blend of power, refinement and technology measures up to top-tier brands. ✤

This year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este saw the debut of the BMW Concept Speedtop – a striking small-series model built for collectors.
At the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2025, an annual event in Italy that celebrates classic and vintage cars, BMW Group presented a new concept car that will be made available for purchase in a small series.
An exclusive three-door interpretation of the sporty Touring, the BMW Concept Speedtop combines the elegance of a shooting brake with unique proportions. Sharing its form language with the BMW Skytop, its high-quality materials and meticulous detailing reflect the car’s craftsmanship.
“A true BMW exudes dynamism and elegance even when it's standing still,” said Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design. “And that's also the case with our new concept car. The BMW Concept Speedtop is characterised first of all by its profile. It is very unique in the automotive industry. In this way, we have created an exclamation mark for our entire lineup of vehicles, especially for the Touring models."
The pronounced V-shape of the front end, shark-nose design, slim front lights and illuminated kidney grille give the car an unmistakable presence. A central spline continues from bonnet to rear spoiler for a dynamic Touring profile, accentuated by a colour gradient from Floating Sunstone Maroon to Floating Sundown Silver. The broad shoulders and two-tone, 14-spoke wheels enhance its athletic elegance. Inside, traditional brogue-style details enrich the leather surfaces, emphasising the manufactory-level craftsmanship. The two-tone colour and material concept creates a connection from exterior
to interior, with brown Sundown Maroon and light Moonstone White harmonising to define dynamic and functional areas. The exterior’s roof spline is mirrored as a light beam in the two-tone leather headliner, providing atmospheric illumination. The boot, also leather-covered, features brogue-style perforations and a two-section layout for multi-day luggage.
The design is further enhanced through the collaboration with Italian manufacturer Schedoni. Two storage areas behind the seats house custom Schedoni made-to-measure bags designed exclusively for the Concept, with a matching weekend bag in the boot.
The concept car doesn’t just rely on design. It is fitted with the most powerful V8 engine currently offered by BMW, delivering high performance to match its aesthetic.
"Last year, the presentation of the BMW Concept Skytop at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on Lake Como generated great enthusiasm among connoisseurs and automotive enthusiasts,” said Bernd Körber, Senior Vice President BMW Brand and Product Management. “This led to a strictly limited production run of 50 units. Thanks to this positive response, this year we have decided to also offer the BMW Concept Speedtop in a limited production series of 70 units.”
The Concept Speedtop is available for collectors and enthusiasts in a limited-run small series. ✤

Starter packs are available for new users, which include groups of accounts covering the same topic – which could be anything from politics to fitness. Bluesky also boasts strong user protection features, including the ability to totally block someone.

After 48 years of being the voice of the Kingdom, Radio Bahrain Company has had a new lease of life thanks to the man in charge, who’s radio ga ga himself, CEO Omar Khalifa Shaheen. In a candid interview with Apple Sharma, he shares his vision for the future of media, his dream guests in the studio and some exciting new plans!
You’ve been at the helm of Radio Bahrain for nearly four years. What inspired you to take on the role and what has been the most rewarding part so far?
I took on the role of CEO of Radio Bahrain – I was a broadcaster, a presenter back in the ‘90s, and the love of music, broadcasting and multimedia actually pulled me back into Radio Bahrain and the restructuring.
I was inspired by the unique opportunity to transform a legacy institution into a modern, dynamic media platform. The most rewarding part has been witnessing our team's creativity come to life and seeing the renewed connection between Radio Bahrain and its audience.
Radio Bahrain underwent a complete rebrand after nearly 45 years. What was the vision behind it and what was the biggest challenge?
People get used to a certain look and feel and, you know, we are creatures of habit. However, within the restructuring of the new Radio Bahrain, we needed to get down to the grassroots level and build on a fresh new look, so that we could re-engage with Bahrain's community. The vision was to create a brand that resonates with today’s listeners while respecting our legacy. We wanted to be bold, digital-first and culturally relevant. The biggest challenge was shifting public perception while preserving the station's trusted identity.
With streaming services and on-demand content becoming increasingly dominant, where do you see traditional radio fitting into the future of media?
It's a very good question. Radio is not a dying industry, it's an evolving industry and we are up against Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, Anghami – but the beauty of radio is the localisation, the fact that we can connect with the community and, in particular, Bahrain's community is very tight-knit and close. So, Radio Bahrain has become a companion, whether it's for someone in the car, in the gym or at home.
Radio remains powerful due to its immediacy and intimacy. In a media landscape flooded with content, radio offers a curated, human connection that cuts through the noise. It will evolve by integrating with multiple digital platforms while maintaining its core essence.
There’s talk of you launching a new podcast. When does it debut and what can listeners look forward to?
That talk is correct – and I can say, I guess quite exclusively, that we will be launching a new podcast! We will have a fresh brand that will come under the umbrella of Radio Bahrain Company, and we will hopefully be able to share the podcast with you soon.
The podcast arena or landscape is huge, so we have gone through quite a lengthy process and a lot of thought, preparation and effort has gone into finding and forming the right team for very strong, quality content and delivering it in a way that I would feel comfortable with.
We’re planning to launch later this year. Listeners can expect thought-provoking conversations, behind-the-scenes stories
from the region and a mix of cultural commentary, music and community that reflects our diverse audience.
From releasing Radio Bahrain’s first limited-edition NFT to now launching a new podcast, what’s next on the horizon?
We’re just getting started. We have some ambitious plans and some of my contemporaries say sometimes it's a bit too ambitious. In addition to the podcast, we’re looking at hosting live Radio Bahrain events once a year that bring our community together in new ways. We’re also exploring expanding our footprint – potentially with new frequencies or even additional stations – to cater to different tastes and demographics. Also, further down the line, we'll be looking at having an academy as well, so that the media and broadcasting sector will have structured syllabuses. It’s all part of our mission to grow from a single broadcaster into a multi-platform media brand.
If you could have anyone – past or present – join you in the studio, who would it be and why?
Michael Jackson and George Michael. Michael Jackson is an obvious choice. He’s someone that I've met and worked with, but it would be fascinating to have him here in Radio Bahrain – to spend more time with him in the studio and actually capture the conversation. Also, someone else that's left us is the legendary George Michael. Both were not only musical legends but cultural icons who shaped generations. Their artistry, charisma and impact on global music would make for an unforgettable conversation –one that explores creativity, fame and the power of music to connect people. ✤
At Sole Corp, you manage campaigns for a range of food and beverage (F&B) brands. What is it about hospitality marketing that resonates with you most?
What I love most about hospitality marketing is that every day brings something new –new campaigns, new trends and fresh ways to engage with our audience. Managing over 15 brands, each with its own identity and cuisine – from traditional Bahraini to Indian, Asian, and more – gives me the chance to constantly shift gears and think creatively. The beauty of marketing in the hospitality space is that you're not just selling a product – you're selling an experience. I enjoy building campaigns that tap into what people are really looking for when they dine out: connection, culture and comfort.
When I see customers engaging with a campaign – sharing it, tagging friends, booking a visit – it’s rewarding because it means we’ve created something that resonates.
You have a passion for creative storytelling. What in your opinion makes an enticing story for a brand?
I believe the most enticing brand stories are those that feel authentic, human and emotionally meaningful. People are looking for more than just a product or service –they want to understand the ‘why’ behind a brand. Storytelling offers a powerful way to showcase the people, culture and passion that brings a brand to life.
When managing multiple brands, you quickly learn the importance of preserving
each brand’s distinct voice. Ultimately, great storytelling builds connection, trust and loyalty – the foundation of long-term, sustainable success.
What's your favourite local foodie spot that never lets you down and what makes it special to you?
There are so many great spots but my go-to for Asian food is Hong Kong Gateway – it’s always a hit with friends and family. For traditional dishes, I love Fareeq Bin Aqool. It really captures the heart of Bahraini cuisine and has become a regular choice. Another new favourite is Scoop Creamery – they’re always coming up with unique, creative flavours. It’s the kind of place that just makes you happy to support local.
With 28 years of international experience, David Miras, Executive Chef at Downtown Rotana, has infused his cooking style with global flavours. He shares excerpts from his culinary journey, from proud moments to his special signature dish. •
You've worked across continents – from Mauritius to the Middle East. How have these international experiences shaped your cooking style?
Every place I’ve had the chance to cook in has added a new layer to my culinary approach, exposing me to a rich variety of flavours, techniques and ingredients. These experiences continually push me to think more creatively. It’s like handing a painter a new palette of colours, instantly making the work more vivid and expressive. My dishes reflect the unique character of each destination, brought to life by the local ingredients and cultural influences I’ve absorbed along the way.
You've appeared in many culinary magazines and on TV. What has been your proudest professional moment in the kitchen so far?
My proudest moment was being named Sous Chef of the Year at the Caterer Middle East Awards in 2010 while working in Dubai. This industry recognition was a powerful affirmation of my dedication and creativity in the kitchen. More than just an award, it was a turning point. It gave me the visibility and confidence to step into leadership roles and has played a key role in shaping the path I’m on today.
During your diverse culinary journey, was there a local ingredient you hadn’t worked with before that ended up surprising you in a good way?
While working in Taiwan, I was introduced to the omakase
concept. It wasn’t just about a specific ingredient. It was an entirely different culinary philosophy. Rather than relying on a fixed, printed menu, omakase embraces spontaneity, using only the freshest ingredients available on the day. It also centres on truly listening to the guests’ preferences. This approach changed my mindset. Since then, I’ve prioritised cooking not just what’s on the menu but what the guest genuinely wants.
Tell us about your signature dish at Downtown Rotana and what’s the story behind it?
My signature dish at Downtown Rotana is Seafood Waterzooï. It’s a refined version of a traditional preparation from Northern France and Belgium – a region where culinary heritage is shared across the border. The dish showcases the elegance of simplicity. Fresh Bahraini seafood gently poached in a light mussels and fennel broth, paired with seasonal vegetables.
What makes it special is the story it carries. It represents my belief that great cooking doesn’t need to be complicated, just honest, seasonal and ingredient-led. Bringing this dish to Bahrain allows me to share a piece of my culinary identity, while adapting it to local palates. It’s become a talking point on our menu and one that truly reflects who I am as a chef. ✤
If the Crowne Plaza has somewhat faded from your gastronomic radar of late, now’s the time to rediscover this erstwhile favourite. There’s a big surprise in store.
In truth, I would generally think of this stalwart property more in terms of its impressive longevity and welcoming atmosphere rather than for flashes of culinary brilliance. But, stepping through the doors of Piani Restobar, I had a feeling that was about to change.
Directly inside you’re met with an Art Deco-style marble bar with antiqued mirror backing, topped by a striking blue glass ceiling sculpture, reminiscent of a wave. Neighbouring fridges display an impressive selection of meats and high-quality bubbles and nearby a baby grand piano awaits someone to tinkle the ivories.
The space is the perfect size, large enough not to feel cramped while small enough to impart an air of easy intimacy.
Parquet flooring, plush leather seating and marble-topped tables are set against dark, high-gloss wooden walls adorned with black and white photos of old-style European city scenes. Overall, the feeling is of the understated opulence you’d find in a classic, upmarket restaurant in Italy – which restaurant manager Mark said is exactly the ambience they were aiming for.
With a welcoming smile, he joined us to explain the concept, which is described as ‘Italian with a Slavic twist’. The chefs are from Russia and many of the dishes include intriguing ingredients that make for interesting contrasts to the regular
Italian fare. To my surprise, there’s also a chef’s special sushi selection, which Mark explained is based around the many different fish species used in Eastern European cooking, in addition to the standard Japanese varieties. With the introductions completed, my companions and I were eager to get acquainted with the menu and, I will say straight away, it did not disappoint.
After some delicious home-baked bread, we were quickly served with silky Black Angus tartar with truffle, parmesan and aged balsamic. The meat, enveloped in the caress of a creamy sauce, beautifully offset the generous curls of salty parmesan and earthy truffle, coming together to create a symphony on the tongue.
Italian burrata, gooey and fluid, followed, its solid casing giving way to a gorgeously runny centre, presented at the perfect temperature to avoid solidification. Served with a signature raspberry balsamic that cut through the richness, the whole was perfectly complemented by the sweetness of cherry tomatoes.
Superb quality beef carpaccio came next, the meat melt-inthe-mouth tender and served with a surprising semi-spiced mango sauce. The mango added both sweetness and a gentle heat drawing out the intense, gamey flavour of the meat, while a scattering of rocket added a light peppery bite.
Next up was one of my favourite dishes – though it certainly wasn’t easy to choose. The Signature Crab Salad could have been a meal by itself. Shredded crab meat, sweet and briny, sat amidst a medley, including avocado, crisp green leaves,
raw broccoli and juicy plum tomatoes. Brought together by a lightly spicy sauce, caramelised pecans added a deliciously crunchy light sweetness and flying fish roe gave a wonderfully salty pop on the tongue – surprising, intriguing and very moreish.
From the goodness of crunchy salad to outright rich indulgence, Chef’s Ravioli with King Crab and smoked cream was pure extravagance in a bowl. The intense, creamy sauce is cooked for eight hours over charcoal, rendering it a deeply flavourful partner to the homemade pasta – al dente and toothy. A black design, painted in squid ink on the dough, added visual interest, standing out against bright green flashes of parsley oil that was the perfect foil for the sweet crab meat.
Stewed veal cheeks may not sound particularly appetising, but this was meat so soft, I could literally pull it apart with a spoon. The minimal fat had rendered down into the flesh, bringing a subtle richness to the delicate flavour. Pearl barley, celery root and a truffle parmesan mousse added the finishing touches for a dish not only intensely flavourful but also beautifully presented. Almost too pretty to eat, this was another of the day’s standouts.
Our final savoury was the lighter but no less impressive filet of Norwegian seabass. Flaky, tender meat with a buttery texture and mild flavour that lent itself perfectly to a delicate lemon butter sauce. A gentle and refreshing finish to the savoury element of our meal that allowed us a slight respite from the richness that had gone before… and that still to come.
It was time for desserts and Honey Cake Medovik was an amazing concoction of 19 layers that takes five days to make and tastes every bit as special as it sounds! Soft and moist with a light sour cream filling and served with a dollop of sweet cream, it was utterly delicious – the honey melded perfectly with the sour cream to leave a charming aftertaste that had me craving more.
The final showpiece was Tiramisu by Chef. A massive bowl of creamy fluff decorated with fat, juicy blueberries was brought to the table on a trolly at which our server added the toppings before our eyes, including caramel sauce, cocoa powder and a generous spritz of edible gold. Definitely one for the coffee lovers, the savoiardi biscuits had been soaked in triple expresso and we could certainly taste the rich smokiness of the bean. But for me, a non-coffee drinker, the generous amount of creamy goodness ensured it wasn’t overpowering, and that spritz of gold was pure theatre.
Our Piani experience was at an end and I honestly could not have asked for more. From the wait staff and the intriguing menu to the high-quality ingredients and atmospheric décor, this restobar can claim its place among the island’s finest eateries and I definitely have a new addition to my list of favourites. ✤ GO: CALL 3440 4100
Contemporary Greek flavours and elegant settings were the talk of the day as Apple
Carving a little niche for itself inside the Vida Beach Resort Marassi Al Bahrain, Lyra’s glowing sign welcomed me as I entered the place and the very first thing I noticed was its harp-shaped moniker, a befitting touch.
The word Lyra has its roots in Greek mythology, inspired by Orpheus' legendary lyre. The musical tone of the name flows effortlessly into the interior, from the soft curves of the décor to the Greek-Mediterranean flavours that sing on the palate. First impressions are everything and Lyra impresses even before the first drink arrives. The focal point is the striking, golden backlit bar in black, white and grey marble, matching the polished flooring. But what really grabs your attention is the oyster shellinspired, gold iridescent sculptural element that climbs from behind the bar upwards into the ceiling resembling rippled molten metal, imparting a warm glow. Curved sofa seating separates this area from the rest of the dining space, which is equally elegant. Every element fits perfectly – the slatted white ceiling, round tables with curved leather chairs and soft table lights create a relaxed mood. Soft beige tones, brushed-gold fittings and polished earthenware-style plates with refined cutlery add to the warmth. A mural of two women playing a lyre stretches along the back wall, injecting subtle colour and energy into the otherwise calm setting.
As I was taking in the ambience, the lovely Marketing Manager, Abigail Englefield, arrived and escorted me outside to admire the gorgeous view. Lyra also offers al fresco dining on an openair terrace overlooking Marassi beach, complete with an eyecatching faux tree centrepiece, an outdoor bar and terracottahued rattan furniture.
Back inside with my dining companions and feeling suitably relaxed, we were greeted by Head Chef Ilias Tasioulas and Restaurant Manager Andrii Volkov, who looked after us throughout our lunch, delivering both impeccable food and service. We started with a welcome breadbasket and Kalamata olives (my absolute favourite) imported from Greece and, if these simple accompaniments were anything to go by, I knew we were in for a real treat. Complemented by homemade focaccia and pita bread, dipped in authentic Greek olive oil, I was in heaven and could’ve eaten this till the cows came home.
Our first selection of spreads included Lyra Taramas, a blend of smoked fish roe (black cod), potato and a hint of lemon. Creamy and balanced, it was topped with vibrant dill oil and a special citrusy chilli, enhancing the dish without overpowering it. The classic Tsatsiki (another personal favourite) combining silky Greek yoghurt, cucumber, garlic and dill oil, was just heavenly. Light, cool, garlicky and tangy, it was the perfect dip to spoon with the pita – we kept going back, almost wiping the bowl clean. With our appetites whetted, we moved on to classic Greek Salad – a medley of tomato, cucumber, thinly sliced red onion, feta, Kalamata olives and oregano. Light, fresh and bursting with flavour, this simple salad was a perfect nod to the Mediterranean and a great example of how high-quality ingredients can elevate even the simplest of dishes.
Next came the Grilled Octopus – simply presented and cooked to perfection with just the right bite. Paired with soft Santorini fava
beans, caramelised baby onions, aged vinegar and oregano, this dish struck a satisfying balance of sweetness, acidity and texture – a delightful appetiser for seafood lovers.
Thoroughly pleased with our starters, we moved to the main course. First up was Lyra Moussaka – layers of beef Bolognese, spicy tomato, potato and aubergine with rich truffle béchamel. Beautifully presented and well-portioned, the dish was comforting and flavourful. The subtle spice of the sauce and the earthiness of the truffles added another layer of complexity and the crispy phyllo pastry strips on top provided a beautiful textural contrast.
Next, and a big hit on the table, was the Artichoke Pappardelle with roasted artichokes and sun-dried tomato. The fresh pasta ribbons came smothered in a silky puréed artichoke sauce, brought together with cream and finished with lemon and dill. Lusciously rich sauce and perfectly al dente pasta was a divine combination and made this the star dish for me.
And finally, the Grilled Sea Bass arrived, looking simple but appetising and served with grilled courgettes, olives, confit tomato, lemon and basil. The flaky fish fell apart at the touch of a fork, while the sweet basil and tangy tomatoes brought everything together perfectly. The accompanying charred courgettes, roast potatoes and lemon-dressed asparagus made this herbaceous dish feel both hearty and refined.
All our dishes were paired with expertly mixed and exquisitely presented mocktails. Too many to list, our favourites included Pathos – citrusy and aromatic; Lyra Spritz – a bright mix of strawberry, grapes and fennel; and Aegean & Tonic – a signature Greek twist on the classic with botanical infusions.
Finishing off in true Greek style, we were treated to two desserts – Baklava Mille Feuille and Frozen Yoghurt. The former was an
absolute showstopper: signature caramelised filo pastry shards, blossom ice cream and rose jam layered into a light, delicate creation that looked almost too pretty to eat. I’m not usually a fan of rose, but I left a total convert. The latter was a creamy Greek yoghurt ice cream served with honey and caramelised nuts – soft and crunchy – and gone in minutes! Proof, as they say, is in the pudding. The silence at the table while we ate, said it all.
Completely and utterly satiated, our meal came to an end but the conversation lingered long after, along with a promise to return for more of Lyra’s Greek-Mediterranean flavours, offered with a modern touch and served with a side of comfort and finesse. ✤
From the extensive menu to the perfectly playful interiors, a visit to the newly opened Urth Caffé proved a revelation for Liz O’Reilly and friends.
Walking towards the outlet through Al Liwan, we were surrounded by pretty glass orbs, greenery and mini, infinitystyle fountains, all setting the scene for the sensory experience to come. And what an experience the interior of Urth Caffé is!
From diamond-tiled floors to various plush seating, some of which features a gorgeous jungle print fabric, to amazing high glass ceilings hung with Mediaeval-style chandeliers and floating heart balloons, there is something interesting and fun literally everywhere you look. The centrepiece, a large and very realistic looking tree decked out with paper hearts and, my favourite spot, the counter displaying the many artisanal coffees, for which the brand is known, and a huge range of desserts, each looking more impressive than the next.
Despite arriving well before midday, the place was packed with a huddle of people waiting to be seated, so, since it was a breezy day, we chose to take a table outside and even here, signs of the brand’s design aesthetic were on display, with pattern-punched metal tables and chairs bearing the Urth Caffé legend across the backs.
Our lovely server, Vince, quickly arrived at the table with two of the signature salads to start. Caravan Kale featured Tuscan kale and red quinoa, both organic and giving a satisfying earthy flavour, alongside cucumber, heirloom tomatoes, roast yams and red onion. A liberal topping of crunchy pita chips and mild, creamy ricotta all doused in a sweet pomegranate vinaigrette, made for a satisfying mix of textures and tastes to whet our appetites.
I loved The Urth Salad with its abundance of super-fresh, crispy mixed greens and a surprisingly mellow and richly creamy feta that lingered gently on the taste buds. Delicate, nutty heart of palm brought the surprise element, alongside a delicious crunch from toasted pine nuts, all coated in Urth’s signature vinaigrette.
I am a big fan of sourdough bread, so when the Panini El Diablo arrived at the table, my taste buds stood to attention. A huge sandwich (we split it between three comfortably) stuffed with tender marinated chicken and Monterey Jack cheese, it looked very impressive but I worried this combo might be a little tame for my slightly fiery palette. However, barely-there shards of grilled coriander and a generous helping of three chilli sauce gave bursts of flavour and a satisfying, lingering heat. This was definitely a favourite at our table.
More of that amazing bread arrived with the Eggs Salmone dish – a twist on the classic eggs Benedict. The toast was slathered in rich lemon mascarpone, providing added interest to the flavour profile and the perfect base for sliced avocado, smoked salmon and poached eggs topped with tasty, tangy salsa. Served with seasonal melon, the plate looked like a wide, sunny smile and I was certainly grinning as I adore the combination of smoked salmon and rich egg yolk with the subtle background hint of dill. Crushed avocado toast came topped with more poached eggs. But this time a generous sprinkling of za'atar, chilli flakes and basil oil brought the heat, bursting on the tongue and greatly elevating the mildness of the silky-smooth avocado. Though already pretty full (not surprisingly), we chose two main courses to share. The Rigatoni Bolognese was superbly flavourful
and comforting. The sauce, rich with butter, cream, onion and aged parmesan alongside the high-quality minced beef, gently wrapped the al dente pasta for a deeply satisfying bite, to which I kept returning.
And last, but definitely not least, for the savouries, the Margarita Pizza. A simple but deceivingly sophisticated combination of tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil. The herb and tomatoes were actually baked into the cheese, which sat atop a base of oven-fresh, lightly blistered, crispy, thin dough. The rich cheese, cooked perfectly to the point of releasing its oils and juices, soaked the dough in tangy flavour and goodness – everything you want from a pizza, and more. Finally, it was time to sample the delights of that impressive dessert counter and I truly could not wait, absolutely everything looked amazing! We were served the Hazelnut Chocolate Cake – layers of chocolate sponge filled with chocolate mousse and Nutella filling, glazed with Gianduja ganache. What an absolute triumph, rich and deeply chocolatey without being overpowering, each layer blended perfectly to create the ultimate indulgence of both taste and texture.
And then came my personal favourite, Tre Latti Cake. Inspired by the famed tres leches, the vanilla sponge is soaked in four different sweet milks but there, the similarity ends. The Urth version takes extravagance to a whole new and delicious level with a thick layer of Chantilly cream and a topping of sweet, fluffy caramelised meringue. Light but satisfying, it brought to mind a subtle mix of childhood memories and very adult opulence. The result? Pure, unadulterated joy.
Urth is rightly famed for its teas and coffees, which are artisanal and mostly organic – we actually sampled those alongside interesting matcha fruit drinks during our visit – but to think this place is your everyday café would be very remiss. From the friendly and knowledgeable staff to the fun, engaging interior and the majorly impressive menu, Urth is anything but average. Pay it a visit and find out for yourself. ✤

The summer holidays are looming ahead, beckoning with a gentle balmy breeze, turquoise waters with white sand and exotic drinks with little umbrellas. Sounds idyllic, doesn’t it?
These four coastal escapes offer just the right mix of natural beauty and local charm to make your next beach break one to remember!
If it’s diversity you’re looking, Bali’s beaches have bucket loads of it. Whether you’re after stylish beachfront bars in Seminyak, reef breaks in Uluwatu or black-sand shores near Canggu, Bali caters to all kinds of travellers. Kuta Beach is one of the better-known spots, with soft sand, gentle waves and stunning sunsets – ideal for beginner surfers. For a quieter vibe, head to Jimbaran for white sand, turquoise water and romantic seafood dinners right on the beach. Over in Uluwatu, it’s all about the surf – Balangan Beach is a picturesque hidden gem with green cliffs and strong waves, while Padang Padang (yep, the one from Eat, Pray, Love ) is another pretty surf spot and great for swimming. Over on Nusa Dua Beach, you’ll find clear waters and white sand that’s perfect for snorkelling, kayaking or just floating about. And if you're chasing that perfect Instagram shot, Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida – one of the most photographed beaches in the world, with its T-Rexshaped cliff and turquoise cove – pretty much nails it. If you’re after peace and quiet, head east where Amed and Sidemen feel a world away from the tourist crush, with black volcanic beaches, traditional fishing villages and family-run warungs (traditional cafés) serving nasi goreng, curries and sambals. Up north, Lovina’s darksand beaches are known for early-morning dolphin sightings, while further west, Medewi is great for long, crowd-free waves and sleepy village charm. Beyond the beaches, what sets Bali apart is its culture – daily offerings (canang sari), temple ceremonies and the scent of incense and frangipani in the air. Despite its popularity, Bali still holds onto its soul. For every busy beach club, there’s always a quiet stretch of sand just waiting to be found.
Barbados is one of those places that feels instantly familiar but still manages to surprise you. With its picture-perfect beaches and easy-going vibe, it’s no wonder it’s one of the Caribbean’s most-loved islands. The west coast – often called the Platinum Coast – is where you’ll find the calm waters, soft white sands and fancy resorts. It’s all very polished. Head east, though, and the mood changes: think crashing Atlantic waves, rugged cliffs and empty stretches of coast made for long walks and scenic drives. Paynes Bay is a go-to for its golden sands, gentle surf, swimming, snorkelling and the chance to spot sea turtles, while Miami Beach in the south feels more local – a laid-back picnic spot with food trucks and stunning sunsets. If surfing’s your thing, the Soup Bowl at Bathsheba is where the action is – steady waves and space for both newbies and seasoned wave riders. For something quieter, Mullins Beach is a good shout or Bottom Bay, with its pinktinged sand and palm trees. Barbados isn’t all about the beaches, though. Inland, you’ll see sugarcane
fields and colourful chattel houses dotted around the countryside. The food’s a big part of island life – don’t miss the national dish of cou-cou (similar to polenta) and flying fish with spicy gravy or try fresh seafood served straight off the grill with a side of fiery pepper sauce. A must-do on Friday nights is Oistins Fish Fry – a lively street market filled with music and food stalls serving delicious local seafood – the ideal place to take in the island spirit. With friendly locals, year-round sunshine and a rhythm all its own, Barbados leaves you sunsoaked and satisfied, ready to plan your return.
If you like your beach holidays with just a little bit of adventure on the side, Mahé is the perfect choice. It’s the biggest island in the Seychelles and home to the capital, Victoria, but it still feels laid-back and unspoilt in many spots. Surrounded by lush green mountains, turquoise shallows and coral reefs, there are more than 60 beaches to pick from! Beau Vallon is one of the most popular and lively – a long crescent of soft sand and calm waters that’s great for everything from lazy swims and diving to kayaking, Jet Skiing and parasailing. Dotted with bars and restaurants, it's ideal for sunset drinks. For snorkelling, head to Port Launay – the water’s packed with colourful fish. Down south, Anse Soleil is a gorgeous wide sandy bay and Anse Takamaka is picture-perfect (though swimmers should beware of strong currents and rocky reefs). Away from the shore, Morne Seychellois National Park is great for a hike – there are jungle trails, panoramic views and the chance to see some of the rarest species of flora and fauna in the world up close. Despite the highend resorts, Mahé still feels refreshingly untouristy in many areas – you’ll often find small Creole houses, family-run eateries and colourful roadside markets. The local cuisine is a tasty mix of African, French and Indian flavours, with fragrant curries, grilled fish and coconut chutneys. Whether you’re hiking through the hills, floating in a quiet bay or just doing absolutely nothing under a palm tree, Mahé has a way of slowing everything down – in the best possible way.
Italy’s cities might get all the attention, but Sardinia is where you go to slow down – an island escape with beaches that could easily be mistaken for the Caribbean. Sure, there’s the glitzy Costa Smeralda up in the northeast, with its clear water, soft sand and designer shops attracting yachts and influencers. But the real charm is off the beaten path. Sardinia’s beaches are mostly untouched, often reached by dusty tracks or old shepherd trails. Along the Gulf of Orosei, you’ll find gems like Cala Luna and Cala Mariolu hidden in limestone cliffs – only reachable by boat or hike, and worth every step for the peace and beauty. Over on
the west coast, Spiaggia di Piscinas stands out with its golden dunes and wild open feel, great for walking, snorkelling or just doing nothing. Cala Domestica, once a mining cove, now has calm water and dramatic cliffs – perfect for a relaxed swim. Down south, beaches like Tuerredda and Porto Pino are quiet and clear, backed by pine forests and totally postcard-worthy. From the golden sands of Chia to the pink-tinged Spiaggia Rosa on Budelli Island, there’s a beach for every mood. Windsurfers love the breezy northwest but if you head inland, you’ll find colourful hill towns like Bosa and Orgosolo, where life moves slowly and lunch can last all afternoon. The food is rustic and rich – think slowcooked meat, fresh seafood, pecorino and bold local grapes. Stay in an agriturismo for a proper Sardinian experience – cosy stone cottages, homemade pasta and olive trees everywhere. Sardinia’s the kind of place where you can unplug, unwind and enjoy the good stuff without any fuss ✤

George Raphel, a chef turned photographer turned entrepreneur, has taken his passion for photography and transformed it into a thriving career, making a mark for himself in Bahrain and the GCC. Apple Sharma caught up with him for an exclusive interview ahead of his first solo exhibition at Downtown Rotana.
You trained as a chef before you took up photography and founded your creative studio Random Solutions. What led you to make this transition and pursue the art professionally?
Yes, I did go to culinary school but I didn’t pursue a career as a chef for very long. One of my culinary experiences was working at an art café in Kochi [Kerala, India], my hometown – probably one of the first of its kind in the country at the time. But I’ve always been passionate about photography. I started taking pictures in high school and loved the whole process of creating a photographic image, from choosing the right kind of film to developing it in the darkroom and printing it out. I think working with artists who held exhibitions in the café inspired me to take photography seriously. So, I left my job and went to a photography school in Mumbai called Shari Academy to finish my degree in Photography.
You’ve built a successful career over the past decade, with your work being featured in many well-known publications. How has your journey as a photographer evolved since you first started in the industry?
I landed my first job as a photographer in Dubai with a top publication in the GCC. It was tough at first to switch from commercial photography training, where we used the latest equipment for each project. But I quickly learnt to improvise
and get the job done with what I had. The best part about editorial photography is that it teaches you to handle all kinds of photography quickly and makes you confident enough to walk into any shoot and meet all kinds of people.
Your portfolio spans a wide range of photographic styles, from editorial and fashion to food and advertising. Which of these genres has been the most rewarding for you, and why?
I don’t have a favourite genre but I love working with all my clients, who are so passionate about their work. They truly appreciate your efforts as a photographer. As for my bias, I must admit that I’m a bit partial to food photography. It’s just so obvious and, given my culinary background, I think I have a good understanding of food science.
Your ongoing exhibition ‘Ana-glyph’ at Downtown Rotana focusses on stereoscopic images. Could you explain this technique and what inspired you to explore this unique form of photography?
Ana-glyph is my first fine art photography exhibition, featuring 20 stunning pieces that I’ve captured across various locations in Bahrain. Anaglyph is a fascinating stereoscopic technique that has been around since the dawn of photography. It involves using a special two-camera rig to capture images and then digitally superimposing them to create a 3D effect. To view these images, you’ll need a pair
of 3D glasses [provided at the exhibit]. I believe this is the first time anyone has captured Bahrain the way I have for this series, so come and experience it yourself!
You’ve described the exhibit as a ‘translation’ of your personal connection to Bahrain. What do you hope to convey through these images and what emotions are you hoping to evoke in viewers through this series?
Having lived in this country, which adopted me like its own, for 16 years, I feel this exhibition is an homage to Bahrain. We all know Bahrain is a serene place, and whenever I come back here, I feel myself. This little island country has grown on me like it does on anyone who comes here. Home is where your heart is, and I lost my heart here, I guess. I know so many people can relate to this – I hope the exhibit evokes these same emotions in the viewers.
Which is your favourite Bahrain location that always draws you back for photos, and why?
If you ever find yourself in Muharraq, you’ll be instantly captivated by its rich history, vibrant culture, mouthwatering food and the people. As a photographer, you’ll be spoilt for choice, with countless opportunities to capture stunning moments and create unforgettable memories.
What’s the craziest shoot you’ve done so far, one where you’ve had to go to extreme lengths (climbing things or awkward angles) just to get the shot?
Oh… there are so many! But I guess the best one was spending three nights on an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean to shoot a feature for a lifestyle magazine.
What advice would you give someone who’s hoping to take the next step from hobbyist to professional photographer? After more than two decades as a photographer, to be honest, I still feel like I’m learning every day. But if I can give a piece of advice, it would be – being professional isn’t only about taking great photos – it’s also about showing a positive attitude towards your work and treating your clients with respect. Invest in your craft, stay curious and surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you. And finally, remember that it’s okay not to have all the answers – what matters is being open to learning and evolving along the way. ✤

Manhunt is a portrayal of the decade-long search for the Al Qaeda leader and explores the aftermath of 9/11 and the difficult decisions made by the US Government. The docuseries includes a combination of archival and behindthe-scenes footage, alongside talking head interviews in order to draw a vivid picture of the government’s critical decision making and eventual capture and death of Osama Bin Laden in 2011.

It features interviews, insights and recollections, from CIA, Department of Defence and FBI officials, as well as journalists and White House aides. The production is honest, thoughtful, unforgettable and will leave you thinking long after watching the last episode. After Manhunt premiered, three former CIA employees interviewed in the documentary talked about things that Zero Dark Thirty, the 2012 movie based on real events, got wrong, like interrogation processes. Fans of the movie will find this sets the record straight.
The film masterfully blends suspenseful horror elements with moments of profound introspection, creating a truly immersive experience.

By Damiano David
Damiano David, former Eurovision winner and charismatic frontman of Måneskin, recently released his solo debut album, Funny Little Fears and it’s a refreshing take on mainstream pop, a drastic shift from the singer’s rockstar roots. Voices opens the album with emphasis on a new start and the inner conflict he battles within, leading into Next Summer, a memorable ballad that showcases Damiano’s impressive vocal range. Dove Cameron’s surprise feature on Zombie Lady amplifies the haunting romance depicted in the track, as the pair harmonise in the last chorus. The album takes on a sombre note in Sick of Myself, where the singer discusses feelings of unworthiness. This theme carries through similarly in Born With a Broken Heart, although it translates differently as the artist sings about being unfixable and wanting someone to love him despite it. The First Time is an upbeat tune that will have your foot tapping steadily along to the beat as Damiano builds suspense to a catchy chorus before the album moves on to Perfect Life. The 12th track is a slow acoustic ballad that tugs on the listener’s heartstrings from beginning to end. The album closes with Silverlines and Solitude (No One Understands), two melancholy tracks. The latter builds to a crescendo before petering off into a calm instrumental ending. Overall, the album makes for an intriguing listen as it is vastly different from the singer’s previous sound. While each track feels similar to the next, the themes, tone and rhythm draw listeners in with his soulful voice and lyrics.
Fancy That By PinkPantheress
Fancy That is PinkPantheress’ second nine-track mixtape following her earlier 2021 release. The singer first hinted at the project in March 2025 when her official website changed its theme.
The first two tracks, Illegal and Girl Like Me , are catchy dance numbers with a hard-hitting beat that reminds listeners of an exciting night out. Tonight , the lead single, introduces a synth that follows the singer’s vocals. The production is both sensual and upbeat, framing the lyrics in a euphoric light. Stars is catchy and upbeat, with some of the chorus being sampled from Just Jack’s Starz in Their Eyes . Rather than sampling melody though, PinkPantheress shares similar lyrics to Just Jack’s 2007 debut.
After the 24 second Intermission , Noises starts off with the singer rapping over a steady beat, though the speed and tempo slows as the character she plays hears strange sounds and delves into a fearful paranoia. Nice to know you is a relaxing pop number with a rap break in the middle, making the song all the more memorable.
The last two tracks, Stateside and Romeo, take on a hopeful, romantic tone as the singer talks about finding her Romeo, alluding to Shakespeare’s famous play Romeo and Juliet . The album makes for a fun listening experience, verging on playful as the singer has quirky lyrics sprinkled in throughout.

The Story of ABBA Melancholy Undercover
By Jan Gradvall
More than half a century after their hit songs were recorded, ABBA still make people the world over dance and sing their hearts out. After 30 years without interviews, in 2013 music critic Jan Gradvall was granted unique access to the band. And, though it’s been a long time coming, this book is the result. Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad all share their personal thoughts. Weaving in and out of their story, Jan Gradvall outlines the context behind the development of their unique sound and shows how the story of ABBA is also the story of Sweden and the globalisation of pop culture.
Residents were left devastated after a massive glacier landslide devastated the Swiss village of Blatten. The regional government said a significant portion of the Birch Glacier, located above the village, had disintegrated with more than 90% of the alpine settlement covered in sludge. Debris also partially blocked the nearby Lonza river, threatening further damage from flooding.
Thought to be at least partially due to global warming, the collapse of the glacier was not unexpected with warnings received and the village evacuated some days before. One resident was reported
missing and, though no significant injuries were recorded, damage to properties in the area is significant. However, amid the dark news, shone a spot of light. When the evacuation order came, hundreds of residents left their homes, taking their livestock with them. But at least some of Switzerland’s famous Alpine cows were trapped in the village, unable to be taken out either on foot or by truck.
Things looked bad for the gentle creatures until the arrival of helicopters with special equipment to airlift the bovines to safety. We love a bit of Swiss efficiency.
As you know, we’re all about cuisine culture and we can’t get enough of the local and regional fare we get to try out every month. We also enjoy a bit of travel and history and a trip the UK often involves a visit to the famed waxworks museum Madame Tussauds, to see what’s been added each time we go. Some of us have even been known to pose with the models of our favourite stars – we’re realistic enough to know we’re never likely to get a real selfie with the likes of Harry Styles!
It’s now emerged that a somewhat different British icon is set to join the
regular display. For a limited time, the inimitable Greggs sausage roll – product of one on the UK high street’s favourite bakeries – is to take its place alongside the likes of footballers and royalty as part of a section dedicated to ‘icons who have helped shape modern British culture’. Well, there’s no doubt the flaky pastry treats are definitely tasty and they certainly make a stir with each new announcement on social media – our UK pals are somewhat obsessed – but cultural icons? We find that idea a bit concerning, and we reckon the selfie would be a bit rubbish too.
We’re all used to the somewhat comical goings on in Formula 1, from drivers shoving each other off the track to the seemingly never-ending round of musical seats and, of course, don’t get us started on that nonsensical 2021 Drivers’ Championship result. But now it seems racing is to get a real comic, or at least cartoon, element with the arrival of everyone’s Disney favourite, Mickey Mouse.
According to formula1.com, 2026 will see a collaboration between F1 and Disney that will see Mickey and Friends going trackside with a series of experiences,
content and, not surprisingly, merchandise aimed at promoting the cartoon mouse to F1’s 820 million fans worldwide and vice versa.
Between multiple Netflix series, Brad Pitt’s upcoming racing movie and now this, it seems F1 is making a bid for world domination.
We can just see it now, Mickey Mouse running an F1 team while Goofy, the dopey dog, gets behind the wheel – oh wait, we thought they said this wasn’t happening until 2026.
