Slowly but surely, Tajikistan is making its way back onto the map! More and more tourists are flocking over to the remote country for a magical journey through history. Dushanbe, the quaint capital city is a sight in itself with gilded palaces and leafy parks to wander. Make your way to Dushanbe if you want to see the largest teahouse and second tallest flagpole in the world! Apart from the capital, every city has something unique and fascinating to offer. Explore the local museums, beautifully ornate mosques as well as holy sanctuaries and dive deeper into Tajikistan’s rich heritage and culture. Discover various opera shows and theatres and get your tea fix at the traditional Chaikhanas! Up for some shopping? Head over to the weekly market between the border of Tajikistan and Afghanistan and get your hands on the freshest produce and some beautiful souvenirs – bargaining allowed! If you’re someone who feels at one with nature, the majestic Fan Mountains offer a ton of valleys to explore and peaks to climb. TURKMENISTAN Wondering what’s behind the most unexplored ‘stan in Central Asia? Dinosaur footprints, burning gas craters, an underground lake and lots more! The mysterious and fascinating Turkmenistan is perfect for off-beat travellers who are bored of the triedand-tested destinations and anyone looking for something more challenging. Once one of the core hubs on the Silk Road, Turkmenistan is home to a number of ancient lost cities and sites. History buffs can take pleasure in exploring the ruins of the city of Merv, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Head over to the capital Ashgabat that hosts the Tolkuchka Bazaar, one of the most iconic Central Asian markets where you can get everything from carpets to camels, food and jewels! Ashgabat is Arabic for ‘City of Love’ and is marked with lavish palaces and gold-domed mosque. One of Turkmenistan’s biggest attractions, the Darvaza Gas Craters is a phenomenon that you just have to see to believe! Be sure to visit after sunset – that’s when it’s the brightest. Hop on a plane to Turkmenistan and get ready for a bona fide adventure!

• If you want to get really remote and rugged – plan a trip along the Pamir Highway. • Tipping is not customary in Tajikistan but services that cater to tourists will expect a gratuity.

• Visit Yangykala Canyon for alluring desert isolation – it’s possible to camp there with A LOT of planning. • Many monuments and streets in Ashgabat are not allowed to be photographed so be sure to ask permission.
