“Nothing soothes the soul like a day by the water.” Unknown “
With temperatures regularly in the 40s in Qatar, we’re fast approaching peak inferno and there’s no better way to cool down than by the shores of our beautiful clear waters. We’re lucky to have more than 560km of coastline, much of which comprises great beaches where you can find everything from family-friendly games and fun sites to extreme water sports.
Our cover story this month takes an in-depth look at what’s available on and in the water, with lots of suggestions to help you beat the heat while enjoying new and exciting activities. I’m looking forward to trying out some of these options. Might see you at the beach.
We recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Fact Dining Awards, at which we brought together the great and good of the F&B and hospitality industries – we’ve got a full report from the event, including all the winners and loads of pictures. Check it out to see if your favourite made the cut.
And, still on the subject of dining, we headed to several of the city’s fabulous eateries to try out some great pub grub at Champions, Italian at Scarpetta, bistro bites at Antoinette’s and fabulous Korean BBQ at Ye Hwa The Place – good thing we have all those water sports to work off the calories!
Close to home, my lucky colleague had a staycation at Le Royal Méridien Place Vendôme Lusail, which sounds amazing, and, in travel, we’re sticking with the seaside theme with some great beach breaks.
I got a chance to chat with Gabriel Alejandro Oramas, founder and arranger of Modern Jazz Melodies, read what he had to say in the Arts & Culture section. I once fancied playing the bassoon, so I was interested to hear his take on it.
Elsewhere in the mag, you’ll find news from the worlds of motoring, tech, fashion and grooming as well as lots of upcoming things to do and some great Eid dining options. Until next time, hope you enjoy the long Eid weekend, let me know what you’re up to on our social media.

Art Basel, one of the world’s premier contemporary art fairs, is coming to Qatar in 2026.
Founded 55 years ago in Basel, Switzerland, the capital joins existing venues Basel, Miami Beach, Hong Kong and Paris as only the fifth edition of the event worldwide and the first in the Gulf
The development comes as the result of a partnership between Art Basel, together with its parent company MCH Group, and leading Qatari organisations Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and QC+.
Debuting in Doha in February 2026, Art Basel Qatar will offer an unparalleled platform to showcase leading galleries and artistic talent from the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and further afield. The inaugural edition will be held at M7 creative hub and the Doha Design District in downtown Msheireb.
The partnership builds on Qatar's cultural vision and amplifies Art Basel's unifying power to create new opportunities for the production, dissemination and discovery of art.
The fair will launch as a tightly curated showcase featuring a select group of leading galleries and artists, designed to respond to today’s market while laying the foundation for growth.
Through educational programming and market development strategies, public arts engagement and more, Art Basel Qatar will holistically weave into the fabric of the country and further catalyse a growing collector and gallery network.
His Excellency Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, Chairman of Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), said: “As a leading investor in sports, culture, entertainment and lifestyle, QSI is very proud and excited to play a role in bringing the world-renowned Art Basel fair to Qatar and our region as part of the legacy of the FIFA World Cup Qatar
2022. As that event demonstrated so unforgettably, sports and culture are closely linked in their capacity to unite people and bring the world together, which is at the heart of QSI’s mission. We are delighted to work with QC+ and to welcome Art Basel to Qatar—a partnership that will inspire the region and bring further investment to a great cultural organisation.”
Art Basel brings to this project its 50-year history of creating the world’s leading art fairs in Europe, the Americas and Asia. Defined by its host city and region, each Art Basel show is unique, as reflected in its participating galleries, artworks presented and the parallel programming produced in collaboration with local institutions.
Noah Horowitz, CEO of Art Basel, said: “Growing the global art market, supporting artists and galleries and developing new collecting audiences is core to Art Basel’s mission. The art scene across the MENA region has undergone exponential growth in recent decades, with the establishment of world-class institutions, the launch of leading cultural events and the growth of a vibrant community of artists, galleries and professionals. We are compelled by HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani’s singular vision for the arts ecosystem in Qatar, and we share a commitment to supporting artists in realising their highest potential.” ✤
Rosewood Doha has opened its doors in Lusail debuting an experience-rich retreat with reservations available beginning July 15.
The hotel introduces a bold architectural presence, inspired by the coral formations of the Arabian Gulf, with sculpted façades and asymmetric mashrabiya patterns. Interiors take inspiration from the curves of dhow boats and seashells rendered in organic textures and nuanced materials.
Rosewood Doha houses 155 refined rooms and suites alongside 162 fully serviced apartments and 276 Rosewood Residences. Designed by acclaimed architect Ibrahim Jaidah and styled by Lilian Wu, the property draws inspiration from Qatar’s marine heritage. Art is woven throughout the property with suites and residences featuring works by Yasser Al Mulla, while Eng. Azzam Al-Mannai’s evocative photography enhances the public spaces. In the signature suites, a bespoke chinaware collection by Ghada Al Khater adds a personal cultural touch.
Culinary experiences at Rosewood Doha begin with a commitment to provenance and place. At the heart of this philosophy is Rosewood’s Partners in Provenance programme, brought to life through a meaningful collaboration with Qatari farmer Jassim Al Kuwari, who runs Blessed Land Farm – a family-owned farm passed down through generations. Dedicated to cultivating organic, sustainable produce, the farm supplies ingredients directly to the hotel’s kitchens.
Eight distinct dining concepts include a 24-hour Levantine brasserie and a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant focused on oceanic, wellness-driven fare. Complementing these are globally influenced venues that celebrate
craftsmanship and ritual, while an elegant all-day lounge serves as a destination for lunch, afternoon tea and evening conversation. At its heart is the Butterfly Pâtisserie – an atelier-style showcase of handcrafted chocolates, refined pastries and seasonal specialities.
Anchoring Rosewood Doha’s vision of refined living are its residences – a refined collection of one-, two- and threebedroom homes that blur the boundaries between private living and elevated hospitality. Thoughtfully designed to evoke a sense of quiet sophistication, each space blends sustainable materials with curated art inspired by Qatar’s landscapes. The interiors reflect a modern aesthetic rooted in local heritage, with decorative details that echo the forms and colours of the desert and sea.
Sustainability and craftsmanship are central to the residences’ design philosophy, with eco-conscious materials enhancing both well-being and environmental integrity. A highlight is the bespoke chinaware collection drawing inspiration from Islamic geometry and the natural world. From curated décor to private entrances and personalised services, every detail is considered.
Rosewood Doha isn’t just a destination – it’s an invitation to experience Lusail in a way that’s both rooted in heritage and brimming with possibility. ✤

Assummer rolls in, the water comes calling – and Qatar answers with a lineup of water sports to match every mood. Think Jet Skis, eFoils, paddleboards, kayaks and everything in between. Whether you're zipping across the waves chasing a thrill or simply enjoying a lazy float under the sun, there’s no shortage of ways to stay cool. We’ve rounded up some of the most exciting activities to make the most of the season – take the plunge and explore what’s in store…
A newer addition to the water sports scene, eFoiling is an exhilarating option that’s gaining immense popularity. Similar to surfing but easier to learn, the motorised board lifts out of the water as you build speed, creating the feeling of gliding just above the surface. It takes a bit of coordination, like surfing or paddleboarding, but once you find your footing, it’s fast, fun and seriously addictive. Often promoted as SiFly – one of the branded electric hydrofoil surfboards – various water sports providers offer rentals and eFoil sessions by certified instructors. Find It Here: Efoil Doha, Code Wake
You’ll need some serious coordination for this one, but it’s great fun once you get going and just think of the pics you can take for the Gram. Flyboarding’s where you stand on a board attached to a water craft by a long hose. The craft’s power propels the rider into the air, allowing them to perform aerial manoeuvres by tilting the feet to control the board’s direction. Thrust comes through a pair of boots with jet nozzles – all very James Bond. It’s available at Katara Beach through Qool Qatar at QR600 for flyboard rental, safety gear and professional instruction.

Steady wind conditions and open waters have made Qatar a reliable spot for kitesurfing. Combining elements from several board sports, it requires balance, control and a bit of nerve – but that’s part of the appeal. You’ll often spot kites flying over popular spots like Fuwairit Kite Beach (FKB), which stages international competitions, Zekreet, where there’s a large lagoon with shallow water, and Al Ruwait – all are regular kiting areas. FKB is the go-to on the local scene for gear, lessons and ongoing support and, with its ideal position on the northern coast, it has one of the longest seasons around.

Still one of the top picks for water sports in Qatar, Jet Skiing offers fast-paced fun and a rush you can’t get on land. It’s an easy way to get out on the water and enjoy a bit of freedom, whether you’re speeding across the open sea or weaving near the shore. From marinas and beaches to resorts and islands (basically anything near water) all are popular spots. Both first timers and experienced riders are well catered for, with various tour operators and hotel beach clubs providing professional Jet Ski rental services with equipment and instruction.

Towable rides have become a go-to for groups looking for something active and fun to do on the water. Whether it’s the classic banana boat or a water craft towing a tube, the idea is simple: hold on tight as a speedboat pulls you across the sea. It’s simple, social and full of laughs, especially as the ride picks up speed and carves through the waves. These towable experiences are available at several locations, each with its own setup and style, and are great fun to do in a big group – be it family or friends.

If you’re after speed, balance and a bit of airtime, wakeboarding ticks all the boxes. It involves riding a board while being pulled by a boat, often performing jumps and tricks along the way. Operators also frequently offer wakesurfing. Similar to wakeboarding, it’s all about surfing a wake created by a boat but without holding onto a rope once you're up. Unlike wakeboarding, it’s done at slower speeds and feels closer to traditional surfing, but the waves are controlled and consistent. It’s a good way to build board skills without having to chase real surf.

If you’re looking for something slightly easier to manage, kneeboards offer a more accessible starting point for those new to water sports. Kneeboarding keeps you closer to the water from the start, with your knees strapped to the board as the boat pulls you along. It’s a fun, controlled way to enjoy the water.

For a more social and easy-going activity, the doughnut boat ride at The Diplomatic Club is a fun way to spend time on the water. These round boats are fitted with a centre table, giving the whole setup the look of a floating picnic. It’s more about the company than the speed and these slow-moving rides are ideal for cruising comfortably with friends while enjoying barbecued snacks on board with music and a fabulous view.

Kayaking remains a favourite across Qatar for those seeking a slower pace on the water. Whether you're out on your own or with a group, our calm seas make it an easy and enjoyable choice for all ages. Stand up paddle boarding has become a common sight on Qatar’s shores, and for good reason. Balancing on a large board while using a single paddle, it’s a calming activity that lets you move quietly across the water. It’s also great for building strength and coordination, and some even use the boards for outdoor yoga sessions. Certain operators also provide larger Mega SUPs for a group experience.

Pedal boats are an easy way to enjoy the water without needing any experience. With space for two or more people, they’re a great option for couples, families or friends who just want to cruise along the shoreline and take in the views at their own pace. Aspire Lake Park and Duck Lake at The Pearl are popular spots, offering a calm and easy-going outing. Water biking, on the other hand, brings a slightly more active twist. These bikes are designed to float, allowing you to cycle over the surface of the sea with minimal effort. Water biking is available at the Inland Sea and various other locations.

Not for the faint hearted, free diving involves diving, especially in deep water, without the use of breathing apparatus. While the idea might sound scary, its said to offer a unique sense of freedom and connection with the underwater world as well as being great for increasing lung capacity and breath control. But, this is not a sport for beginners, you will need to learn the ropes from professionals and always, always go on accompanied dives. Find It Here: Alghais Diving, Poseidon Dive Center
Qatar offers excellent conditions for scuba diving, with warm waters and plenty to explore beneath the surface. Snorkelling is a great way to explore the sea and Qatar’s clear, shallow waters make it especially accessible. It’s a safe and enjoyable activity for families, with gear readily available to rent from dive shops and beach operators. Some companies also offer guided snorkelling. More commonly known as car boats, these are quite a sight to see – imagine what appears to be a Porsche or a Ferrari bobbing happily on the water. They combine the thrill of a sports car with the more gentle fun of a boat ride. Don’t forget to snap a picture. Find It Here: Old Doha Port, West Bay Beach
Fishing is a popular pastime in Qatar and enthusiasts will find plenty to keep themselves occupied. Qatar’s waters are home to an abundance of species, such as hammour, snapper and barracuda. Chartered trips are available for both beginners and experienced anglers with local tour operators offering guided excursions. Various companies even offer professional fishing experiences, including casting, jigging and trolling. And you can even take a dhow fishing trip from Doha Corniche.

We took to the roads in the all-new Lynk & Co 05 HYPER HALO, a premium compact crossover SUV that commands more than just attention.
Always excited to experience something new, FACT jumped at the chance to try out our very first Lynk & Co vehicle, compliments of Auto Class Cars. Lynk & Co is a global automotive brand created as a joint enterprise between Geely Auto Group and Volvo Car Group. This combination of East and West has resulted in the creation of the high-end 05 HYPER HALO, a compact crossover SUV that is far more than just a pretty face.
Visually, the HYPER HALO commanded our attention from the get-go. With dimensions of 4,549mm in length, 1,860mm in width and 1,689mm in height, it pushes the boundaries of the compact SUV segment. The car’s coupe-esque profile endows it with the presence of a much larger vehicle.
From head-on, we took in the signature split headlights that set the tone for the exterior design. The Aurora Borealis Daytime Running Lights stretch sleekly across the edges, while the main LED projector beams are lower in the fascia, giving the vehicle a stealthy and subtly futuristic face. The car’s presence is enhanced by a blacked-out grille, accentuated by an aggressive-looking bumper flanked by air intakes, hinting at the SUV’s performance capabilities. Shifting our attention to the sides, we took in the sloping roofline
and Silver Blade 20-inch wheel rims that underscore the crossover’s silhouette. Even when standing still, this car looks like it's on the move. The combination of character lines, aerodynamic crafting and muscular hindquarters bestows the HYPER HALO with a steady stance, leaving us confident in the vehicle before we even started the engine.
At the backend, we were greeted by ‘Energy Cube’ LED rear combination lamps and a stylishly integrated sports spoiler, working together to create a modish rear aesthetic. We found the car’s look harmonious and upmarket, competing with SUVs flaunting higher price tags.
The interior of the 05 was no less impressive and, in many ways, comparable to a luxury saloon. We would describe the cabin as a blend of Scandinavian minimalism, thoughtful ergonomics and high-end materials.
The supportive and comfortable integrated sports seats are made from Nappa and Nubuck, providing a contrast in textures. The seats are 12-way adjustable and feature a memory function to provide excellent lumbar support. The driver’s seat also offers ventilation ensuring maximum comfort when out on the roads. The cabin is gently illuminated by subtle ambient lighting that we easily adjusted to suit our preferences. A panoramic sunroof
ensured natural light reached every inch of the cocoon-like interior, adding to the airy feel.
Abundant storage space, including door bins, a large centre console and underfloor cargo storage provided practicality for larger families and longer journeys. And there was plenty of legroom in the rear along with individual air vents.
Concentrating on the in-car tech, it became apparent that Lynk & Co has a forward-thinking mindset.
At the heart of the infotainment system is a floating 12.7-inch touchscreen featuring an intuitive UI with crisp graphics. This is coupled with a 12.3-inch full digital cluster with equally impressive screen resolution. We found the infotainment system uncomplicated to navigate. It’s also compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Bluetooth connectivity and a wireless charging tray make life in the 05 all the easier.
The premium Harman Kardon Infiniti sound system was a standout feature, delivering theatre-worthy sound quality, ensuring we had a great soundtrack throughout our test drive. Another noteworthy feature was the incredible air-conditioning. Test-driving this compact SUV in 46°C, we were very grateful for the speed and extent at which this unit operated. Within a minute, the entire cabin had reached our desired temperature, creating a chilled sanctuary for our experience.
Eager to see what this beast could do on the roads, we couldn’t help but smile when it was time to engage the ignition.
The 05 HYPER HALO packs a Drive-E 2.0 TD T5 turbocharged engine that delivers 254hp and 350Nm of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and employing an allwheel-drive system, we powered the SUV from 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds. This time does not do the car justice however, as it feels substantially faster behind the wheel.
Navigating the roads, we were hugely impressed by the SUV’s efficient handling capabilities and found the power delivery both smooth and responsive. The spritely acceleration allowed us to perform quick overtakes and to easily transition onto busier highways. The transmission shifts were seamless and when in Sport Mode, the car was even more responsive, holding gears longer for a sportier feel. Comfort, Off-Road and Eco are additional Mode options.
The AWD system ensured excellent grip at all times, even in sandy patches, enabling cornering with confidence and the balanced chassis, sport-tuned suspension and precise steering meant a dynamic driving experience we will not forget in a hurry. Perhaps the 05 HYPER HALO’s greatest achievement is its ability to balance performance with comfort. The floaty feel of our journey was enhanced by the quietness in the cabin as we watched the kilometres roll silently by.
On the safety and driver assistance front, the vehicle is fully loaded. Amongst the many inclusions are Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane
“
Even when standing still, this car looks like it's on the move.”
Change Warning, Blind Side Detection, Traffic Jam Assist, Pedestrian Detection, Forward Collision Warning and a 360-degree panoramic camera system.
The Lynk & Co 05 HYPER HALO is more than just a stylish ride, delivering substance alongside its fashionable design. This compelling compact crossover SUV blends its bold exterior with state-of-the-art technology and an enthusiastic performance. It offers luxury without being pretentious, power without being disorderly and high-tech without being overwhelming. This SUV is a welcome addition to the premium market. ✤

If you miss the old days before Twitter became X and went a bit off the rails, and before other social media platforms took the decision to weaken user protections, then Bluesky could be the one for you.
The app was started by Jack Dorsey and the Twitter team and became a separate entity after Elon Musk purchased Twitter in 2022.
Over the past couple of years, its grown significantly and, at the beginning of the year, Bluesky passed 30 million active users. In April, it launched a verification badge system, increasing trust. Bluesky operates like a classic social media platform with an endless feed to scroll through but what you see is based on what you follow, rather than paid visibility. Some notable news agencies have also migrated to Bluesky from X, so there is plenty of up-to-the-minute content.
Starter packs are available for new users, which include groups of accounts covering the same topic – which could be anything from politics to fitness. Bluesky also boasts strong user protection features, including the ability to totally block someone.

Nintendo Switch 2 is due to launch this month with new forms of game communication, powerful new hardware, reimagined online capabilities and a broad range of games.
Nintendo Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch built-in LCD screen that displays in full HD at 1080p while maintaining the same thickness as Nintendo Switch. Even while on the go, the new device offers vivid, detailed game experiences, as well as smooth graphics showcasing character movements and their rich facial expressions.

The angle of the new stable stand on the rear of the system can be adjusted freely, enabling players to find their preferred viewing angle. The new device, which is compatible with a huge range of games, has significantly improved CPU and GPU performance over its predecessor, resulting in a faster processing speed and enabling new visually advanced gameplay. It also makes it possible to
achieve more detailed graphics and faster loading times. The sound quality is more natural and clearer with an even more balanced sound range. When playing in handheld mode or tabletop mode, players will be able to experience games with even more immersive, three-dimensional sound.
The internal storage of Nintendo Switch 2, where digital games and saved data are stored, is 256GB, eight times greater than Nintendo Switch. For additional storage, Nintendo Switch 2 only uses microSD Express cards, which have faster data reading speeds than previous microSD models.
With the new online feature GameChat, players can talk together as if in the same room, despite being miles apart. Once GameChat is up, players can start a chat with friends anytime. The system’s built-in mic can be used to voice chat while playing games with up to 12 people in different locations. Up to four friends can share their screens and, if they connect a compatible USB-C camera, they can also video chat. Additional friends can join the chat via audio only. Until the end of March 2026, GameChat can be used without the need to have a Nintendo Switch Online membership. ✤

The General Manager of Our Habitas Ras Abrouq talks cultural connections and the importance of small acts of service.
What first attracted you to the hospitality sector and how has it lived up to your early expectations?
From an early age, I was captivated by the idea of creating meaningful experiences for people from all walks of life. Hospitality offered a unique platform where culture, connection and creativity converge – and that truly resonated with me. Over the years, the industry has not only lived up to but exceeded my expectations. The dynamic nature of hospitality continuously challenges and inspires me, especially at Our Habitas, where human connection and storytelling are at the core of everything we do.
Our Habitas group the world over is known for its ‘Luxury for the Soul’ ethos. Can you explain how this is characterised at Ras Abrouq?
At Ras Abrouq, ‘Luxury for the Soul’ is reflected in our intentional design, immersive programming and authentic guest experiences. It’s about creating space for reflection, discovery and joy in a natural, unspoiled environment. Whether it’s a sunrise meditation on the cliffs, storytelling by the fire or learning from local artisans, we go beyond the traditional concept of luxury by offering soulful, transformative experiences rooted in nature and culture.
The property is famed for its emphasis on arts, culture and local heritage connections. What is the event/installation/ immersive experience you’re most proud of in this respect?
One of the experiences I’m most proud of is our ongoing collaboration with local artists and cultural custodians. Our Desert Dialogues series stands out – a programme that brings
together Qatari storytellers and musicians to share their craft with our guests. It’s a beautiful fusion of tradition and curiosity, offering a rare opportunity to engage with the soul of the land and its culture in an intimate, respectful way.
If you could swap jobs with anyone in the resort for a day, who would it be and why?
I’d love to swap roles with one of our experience hosts. They are the bridge between the guest and the magic of Ras Abrouq. Spending a day guiding guests through the desert, sharing local tales or leading a stargazing session would be both humbling and energising. It’s a role deeply connected to our purpose and a reminder of why we do what we do.
Do you have a secret talent or bucket list item that our readers might be surprised to learn about?
What truly fulfills me beyond the walls of hospitality is giving back – volunteering with organisations dedicated to humanity and social impact. I’m especially passionate about initiatives that support children and underserved communities. Whether it’s mentoring young minds, giving talks on the transformative power of hospitality or simply showing up where help is needed, I believe that small acts of service ripple far beyond what we can see. Recently, I had the honour of sharing a heartfelt speech at Condé Nast Traveler’s event, where I spoke about the responsibility we carry as hoteliers – not just to create memorable stays, but to foster genuine human connection and leave the world a little better than we found it. It’s this alignment between purpose and profession that keeps me grounded and inspired. ✤
Ahmet Antepli, General Manager of Hilton Doha The Pearl, reflects on Doha’s development, management style and ‘must see’ spots.
What first inspired you to seek a career in the hospitality industry?
I’ve always considered myself a people person with an outgoing personality who genuinely enjoys connecting with others. I’m very hands-on, and I thrive in environments where I can actively engage with people and make a positive impact on their day. What truly inspired me to pursue a career in hospitality was the joy I felt in helping others – making them feel welcome, cared for and happy. I also love the sense of adventure this industry offers; no two days are ever the same and I find energy in the fast-paced, ever-changing nature of the work. My personality naturally aligned with the values of hospitality and that passion drove me to start from the bottom and grow through every opportunity, learning and evolving along the way.
Being a Doha native, you must have seen significant changes in the industry over your career. What stands out most to you?
As someone born and raised in Doha, it’s been really special to witness how much the city has grown and evolved over the years. I first left in 1988, then returned for a short time during the 2006 Asian Games. I came back again in 2016 and most recently re-joined the hospitality scene in 2024 with The Plaza Doha, LXR Hotels & Resorts. Each time I returned, I noticed more positive changes – not just in the skyline, but in the energy of the city and the direction it’s heading.
What stands out to me the most is the steady, healthy growth of the hospitality and entertainment sectors. There’s been a clear effort to develop these industries in a thoughtful way, blending tradition with innovation. It’s exciting to see Doha becoming more
of a global destination, while still holding onto its roots. I feel proud to be part of this journey and genuinely look forward to what the future holds for the city and the industry.
You’ve said you want to redefine Hilton Doha the Pearl as a leisure-driven destination. Please tell us about the resort and the features you are particularly keen to promote in this regard. Our diverse dining scene continues to be a highlight. Mulberry Tavern, our modern gastropub, offers hearty comfort food with a contemporary twist. For casual dining, The Terrace by Lobby Café serves all-day alfresco meals in a breezy, welcoming setting, while La Pergola Lounge brings a touch of sophistication with weekend brunches and live entertainment.
We’re also proud to be a family-friendly destination. Our Kids’ Club offers a safe and engaging space with supervised activities designed to keep our youngest guests entertained. In addition, our hotel regularly hosts family-focussed brunches and recreational activities, ensuring memorable moments for guests of all ages.
Are there any upcoming developments that you can share with our readers?
Soon we will be announcing the launch of SOL Beach Lounge, an
exciting new beachside destination designed for relaxation and vibrant social experiences. Our guests can look forward to laid-back Latin American cuisine, crafted beverages and leisure activities by the shore such as beach volleyball and paddle boarding. Whether dining by the sea or simply unwinding with friends, our beach lounge promises to be the go-to spot for our guests. Alongside that, we are delighted to soon introduce Karma Lounge, a brand-new venue at our hotel serving a fusion of Asian and international flavours, complemented by DJ performances to elevate the experience. Coming soon!
How would you describe your management style and what do you believe is the most important trait to get the best from your team?
I would describe my management style as hands-on and collaborative. I like to work alongside my team – not just to support them but also to keep learning myself. While I may not be an expert like an executive chef, I’m always eager to understand how things work and how different roles contribute to our success. Communication is key for me and I believe in two-way dialogue. I listen to my team, and I value their input. Often, their perspectives – especially from younger team members or those more in tune with new technologies – bring fresh and practical ideas that improve how we work together.
I also see myself as a coach and mentor. I want my team to grow, feel empowered and be productive in ways that feel meaningful to them. One thing I always avoid is giving promises I can’t keep. I’ve seen the damage that can do and I know how it feels when
trust is broken. For me, being honest, respectful and consistent builds stronger, long-term relationships.
At the end of the day, when you truly listen to your team and treat them with fairness and respect, you become part of their journey – and that’s something they’ll carry with them.
On a more personal note, how do you spend your time in Qatar when you’re not working and what three things you would say are ‘must sees’ for visitors to Doha?
When I’m not working, I really enjoy staying active. I like jogging, rope jumping and kayaking – these are my go-to activities that help me unwind and stay energised. I’m also a diecast car collector and a big car enthusiast. I love working with my hands, whether it’s fixing things or simply enjoying the details of model cars.
As for things to see and do in Doha, the first must is definitely a trip to the inland sea and the desert. The dunes, the calm of the desert and even overnight stays out there offer a unique experience that’s hard to find anywhere else. I also recommend going fishing and spending time by the sea – Qatar’s waters are truly beautiful and peaceful.
Second, without a doubt, Souq Waqif. It holds a special place in my heart from my childhood. It’s full of life, culture, tradition and some of the best local food. It’s a true reflection of Doha’s heritage and a place I always enjoy visiting Third, the museums, especially the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum, with their unique structures and designs that are deeply rooted in the country’s heritage. ✤
Joseph Yammine, Executive Chef at The Diplomatic Club, talks proud moments and life in the kitchen.
What first attracted you to life in the kitchen?
The ingredients are the first thing that draws me into the kitchen – I’m fascinated by their quality and the chemical reactions that occur when different flavours are combined. It all leads to an amazing result that I like to call ‘the magic transformation’.
With more than 30 years of experience, what has been your proudest moment and why?
After many years of cooking for all kinds of receptions, I’ve had countless proud moments. Whether it was receiving heartfelt compliments from a couple after preparing a lavish buffet for their royal wedding, being approached by a president’s protocol team asking for the recipe of a dish he enjoyed or watching my students rise in their careers and reach top positions in the industry – it all fills me with pride. Sometimes, it’s the simpler things that touch me the most: the smile of a child who finishes every bite of a meal I made or an elderly lady telling me my dish brought back memories of the old days. These moments remind me why I love what I do.

Champions, as Fernanda Langhammer had the opportunity to discover, is the place to watch your favourite sports in a great atmosphere while enjoying delicious bites and drinks.
As the name suggests, Champions is a destination for sports enthusiasts but also the perfect place to go if you are looking for good food. Located at Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel, the eatery combines the best of both worlds with spectacular service.
With screens in different sizes throughout the space, it's easy to find a spot to watch your team playing. However, if you are more interested in having a conversation with your mates, the booths with comfy red leather seats, placed in the centre give you a bit of privacy. There are red accents throughout, painting not only comfy sofas but also the stools by the counter, giving a vintage diner vibe. My dining companion and I chose one of the tables right in front of a big screen (his team was playing that night and he didn't want to miss a single moment. I have a feeling he only accepted my invite to dine because of the game – I guess I picked the right spot). The place was quite packed and the vibe was contagious – I found myself cheering along as well. I have to say that Champions won me with its welcoming popcorn, mildly spicy and in generous portions. I absolutely love popcorn, so I would’ve been happy enough with just that the entire night. To my joy, our attentive table host had the same name as me, Fernando, and he made the whole experience even better with his knowledge of the offerings and his friendly smile.
The menu has all the delicious bites you expect in such places, from tasty burgers and wings to seafood buckets. It's a paradise for meat eaters and those who love finger food and cold drinks. With recipes to please every palate, Chef Roy explained that Champions offers staples from American and South American cuisines, focussing on perfect grills and fried options. When asked what the best-sellers are, he didn't have to think twice: burgers and sliders. With no further ado, it was time to start ordering!
If there is something I frequently pick when I spot it on the menu, it is Dynamite Prawns (or shrimps; they are actually different species and prawns are bigger, but I have to confess that I can't seem to taste the difference). They came piping hot, covered in a deliciously crispy batter and dynamite sauce that had the right kick to it with a sweet hint – it was yum! There were some fresh red chilli slices too, to increase the heat.
I really love Tex-Mex food and, yes, Champions offers an incredible selection. The Classic Nachos came with a bed of tortilla chips covered in a generous layer of melted cheddar cheese, a blob of sour cream (which added a delicious acidic tang), salsa, guacamole and spring onion with jalapeños sprinkled on top for a touch of green and dimension. My mission was to get a sample of every element for a mouthful of flavour explosion – it worked! The crispness of the chips, the tanginess of the sour cream, the smoothness of the guacamole and the comfort of cheese in a mix of textures composed the ultimate bite. The Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos followed, a soft tortilla shell filled with tempura shrimp, pineapple salsa and coleslaw bathed in Frank's hot sauce (made with a variety of cayenne peppers); this had the perfect mix of flavours – the acidity and sweetness of the pineapple was the cherry on top. I am not a meat eater, but I couldn't leave Champions without
trying one of the sliders. To my delight, they had a veggie option, yay! The plant-based burger patty was placed between a multigrain bun, covered in Emmental cheese and layered with avocado, lettuce, tomato and jalapeño mayo. When the plate reached the table, I thought to myself that it looked like those picture-perfect burgers with the right thickness of the 'meat', melted cheese, tomato slice and a green touch from the avocado – the taste was equally on point with a juicy patty that had the expected smokiness from a burger. All the elements were beautifully balanced and the accompanying sweet potato fries added a sweetness to this comforting, savoury dish. If meat is not up my alley, it is definitely a favourite with my dining companion and he went for the Grilled US Angus Ribeye 350g accompanied by coleslaw, steamed vegetables (his choice) and barbecue sauce. The meat looked exactly as it should, with the marks of the grill creating the perfect criss-cross pattern and luscious shine. The caramelised outer layer gave a smoky touch to each bite and he savoured the high quality of the cut – it was tender and had a delicious buttery hint because of its fat-marbling. After pleasing our savoury taste buds, we decided to choose one dessert to share, and we went for Chef Roy's recommendation: the NY Cheesecake. With a crunchy biscuit base, it had a rich, smooth texture and a sweet, tangy flavour. It was velvety and melted in the mouth, leaving hints of vanilla and lemon on our tongues. The addition of fresh strawberries on top added the perfect fruity taste to break the creaminess. It was a fantastic way to finish this meal, which was a winner in all senses. To my friend's delight, his team also won! If you are looking for a place with
impeccable service, yummy food and sports vibes, Champions checks all the boxes. ✤

SD got a taste of authentic Italian hospitality on an evening at New York eatery,
Scarpetta is Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail's gift to Italian fine-dining in the city. We arrive at the spectacular location and as soon as we enter, we notice the striking interiors – grand and glamorous, blending mid-century Italian elegance and contemporary charm. At first look, it’s almost regal and we are already impressed with everything we see. With its blend of dark woods and coloured marble, there's a quintessential Italian quality about the space that feels timeless. The rectangular light fixtures, reminiscent of the very first Scarpetta outpost in Manhattan's Meatpacking District, immediately grab our attention. The atmosphere is almost recreated here but set amid the beautiful grounds of Waldorf Astoria Doha Lusail.
The dining room is rather massive, right next to an entertainment area that looks like the place to be on a Doha weekend. The alfresco set up is simple and comfortable, with views of the resort's pool and beach – definitely a sight for sore eyes. The weather is still good in Doha, so this is where we will dine tonight, on the terrace. We are instantly greeted by Myet, who introduces himself as our host for the evening. He's delightful and if the novelty of a restaurant that made its way around the world (Rome, Tokyo and other cities) isn't enough, Myet's welcome suffices to assure us we're in good hands. He brings the beverage menu and the crafted drinks are a great introduction to what's to come. We select the Black Stone Berry – a hibiscus tea-based mocktail with passionfruit and raspberry syrup, and La Manguita – composed of mango, lemongrass and sage. An earthy and fruity combination, this drink is easily our favourite with an unexpected spicy kick.
We're started off with some dreamily soft focaccia alongside some caponata and mascarpone butter. It's addictive, but we've promised ourselves not to finish it. Loading up on bread is tempting when we're hungry, but we know better.
While we're waiting, Myet brings Scarpetta's Amuse Bouche of the day – a Mushroom Ball. If this deep-fried circle of goodness is anything to go by, our next courses promise to please. Luckily, it’s on the menu so we're definitely ordering this next time.
We pick the best sellers from the appetiser menu, as recommended by Myet. The Braised Short Rib is slow cooked for 24 hours, and we can tell as our knives slide through like butter. A gravy sauce on top really uplifts the flavour but the premium meat still shines. The Charred Octopus is clearly a crowd pleaser. Perfectly cooked and served on a bed of marble potato with artichokes, scallions and celery. A light dish that really focuses on the main ingredient, this octopus is truly the taste of summer. For mains, we aren't faced with an easy choice. Every dish on this menu looks stellar. Everything we've tried thus far has delivered, so we're expecting the same delight from our pasta and pizza selections.
The Short Rib and Bone Marrow Agnolotti is unlike anything we've tried before. It's an obvious choice given how loved it is at the New York restaurant. It’s common to enhance flavours with bone marrow in Northern Italian cooking (think Risotto alla Milanese Con L'Ossobuco) but bone marrow in a pasta is risky business. The chef, however, knows exactly what he's doing. This homemade pasta is al dente, filled with the most tender short rib and the bone marrow makes it unforgettable. We're not
complaining about the grease – it really is the good kind and we're starting to feel like we can't get enough of it. Our host recommends the Ravioli Cacio e Pepe. It's one of the signature dishes and it really highlights the chef's talent. With charred leeks, brown butter and sage, this stuffed ravioli should be the talk of the town. The filling is lush and creamy and the sauce is impossibly smooth. It's a little experience of its own and one we're surely giving ourselves again.
The chef decides on our pizza tonight and surprises us with the Beef Spicy Salami. With a perfect crust, this pie brings the heat with harissa and spicy beef spinata. The pecorino and mozzarella cheese melt so gently and every slice is a treat for all the senses. It doesn't sound like we've gone too far with our menu choices, but at this point we've reached the end of the road as far as our stomach capacities go. The Valrhona Chocolate Cake has our attention but so does the Tiramisu. Unfortunately, this is one of the rare moments in our life where we are far too full to order two desserts. So, we take a tough call – Tiramisu it is. We're interested to see the modern take on this very classic Italian dessert. It arrives in a sleek glass, crowned with half a chocolate dome on top. Our host Myet pours hot espresso over it and melts the chocolate into the glass. It's a nice gimmick and thankfully, it's not just that. The taste matches up and we're happy to conclude our dining experience at Scarpetta with this sweet highlight. The service tonight has been flawless. A warm and intimate setting in a sophisticated space complemented by food that comforts the soul. We’ve had a splendid night out at Scarpetta Doha, straight out of New York City. ✤ GO: CALL 4456 5773 FOR MORE INFORMATION.
AMS discovered classics and a range of new favourites on a visit to Antoinette’s.
The entrance area at Antoinette’s, at Dusit Doha Hotel, made an immediate impression with its polished marble counters, colourful displays of patisserie and dramatic ceiling grid. The array of tempting cakes and macarons brought back memories of previous visits to Paris with bakeries on every street. Stepping further into the space, we were struck by the light pouring in through tall windows, with scores of guests outside, enjoying dinner. The glossy floors led to plush semi-circular booths, perfect for families and friends, as well as more traditional tables and chairs, offering greater intimacy.
The Restaurant Manager, Inggridt, warmly greeted us and explained the plans to develop the cafe with a range of bistrostyle French dishes and all-day breakfast favourites. She then handed us over to Ingrid, our waitress for the afternoon, who beamed with a genuine smile. She quickly reminded us she had served us on our last visit – the sign of a real professional. After settling us into our seats and topping up our water, Ingrid introduced us to Chef Motee. Calm and collected, he explained that we were previewing highlights from a new menu, due to be revealed in the coming weeks. Leaning into French classics – the sort you know and love – he told us there was a focus on clarity and precision. Nothing fussy, nothing forced. He simply wanted to "let the ingredients speak”.
We started with the burrata salad and pesto oil. A soft, creamy round of burrata sat atop a bed of Heirloom tomatoes. The basil oil gave off a pleasant aroma – fragrant, not overpowering. It was restrained in the best way, letting the ingredients shine. A quiet opener, but one that set the tone beautifully. Then came the quinoa and watermelon, which was more vibrant,
more playful. Thin sliced sweet watermelon, cubes of tofu and a zip of lime gave it brightness, while crisped quinoa added crunch. It looked like health food, but it didn’t eat like it. Light, yes, but layered and satisfying. We could have stopped there, but that was never going to happen.
The French onion soup followed. It was rich, dark and deeply savoury. Everything we wanted it to be. The broth carried that caramelised sweetness that only comes from patience and the Gruyère topping had just the right stretch. It clung to the spoon, then melted away. This was a dish that made you forget the temperature outside and imagine yourself in a winter scene.
Next, came the egg cloud – an opportunity for the kitchen to have a little fun while showing off some serious chops. A soft, white dome concealed a yolk that burst like sunshine. It pooled gently, mingling with shavings of dry beef and a bold hit of cheddar. The warm sourdough on the side was perfect to mop up every last
bit. Chef Motee told us he expected the creation to be a big hit as the centrepiece of the new menu, and we had to agree.
Another brunch-style plate came next in the form of salmon, avocado, burrata and pickled red onion on sourdough. Familiar elements, yes, but put together with care. The generous portion of salmon was soft and doused in lemon juice, the burrata cool and creamy, the pickled onion and capers bright and punchy. A forkful of everything gave you that elusive balance of richness, salt, zing and crunch.
From there, things moved into richer territory with the mushroom ravioli. Pillowy parcels, filled with chanterelle and shiitake, finished with a light butter sauce and a hint of thyme. Earthy and enveloping. We found ourselves slowing down with this one –not out of fullness, but to savour it.
So, at this point, we just took a moment to relax in anticipation of the main courses to come. Sitting back in our seats, we watched the ebb and flow of the busy restaurant. There were many visitors from overseas staying at the hotel, and we caught the sound of French accents, people buying pastries and ice cream and a steady stream of locals mostly choosing to sit outside and enjoy the good weather. There were students drinking coffee and eating cake while working on a project, families gathered around tables, businessmen deep in discussion and groups of lady friends lost in conversation. Our people-watching was only interrupted by the arrival of the next dish.
And what a dish it was. Sea bass with crisp skin, flaky flesh and a buttery sauce brought to life by lemon and capers. The parsnip and carrot purée beneath was smooth and faintly sweet, offering
just enough contrast. Every part of the dish had a purpose and there was no garnish for garnish’s sake.
And then, as the French say, the pièce de résistance - a juicy tenderloin with a perfect sear and a warm pink centre each slice tender and full of flavour. The dauphinoise that accompanied it was rich and indulgent, its top just catching at the edges, while a silky mushroom purée anchored the plate. It was the sort of dish you quietly nod through, not quite believing how good it tastes.
And so, to the sweets. We tried a bit of everything (for research, of course). The chocolate brownie was dark and fudgy, the mango verrine light and tangy. Caramel and chocolate bites ticked the comfort box. The croissants were fresh and buttery, clearly made that morning. A delicate custard Danish finished things off, wobbling ever so slightly as we took the final bite. Everything we ate was artistically assembled and inviting. A lot of care had gone into each dish. The egg cloud stood out, with its soft, soufflé-style whites and that perfectly runny yolk added in after. ‘Simple’, but clever. There was a clear sense of structure, with flavours layered thoughtfully and a nod to classic French techniques throughout. Nothing felt overdone or out of place, and the whole menu just worked. The chef’s knowledge and passion clearly shone through. In short, it’s the perfect venue for a satisfying breakfast, an indulgent lunch or a sumptuous evening meal. ✤ GO: CALL 4004 4052 FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO MAKE A BOOKING.
AMS sampled a meat feast supreme on a visit to Korean and Japanese barbecue,
We walked into Yee Hwa The Place Restaurant & Lounge, at Millennium Place Doha, on a Sunday afternoon, drawn by the idea of unlimited sushi and Korean barbecue. The entrance set the tone with walls lined in bamboo and two carved wooden figures standing like quiet greeters. These elements gave the restaurant a touch of character and a hint of playfulness. Inside, the restaurant was packed with diners. Everyone was busy grilling meat or chatting inside American-style booths. Each one was fitted with its own hot plate and had a ‘chimney’ over the top to extract the smoke. A large open kitchen sat at the far end of the dining room where chefs were busy preparing fresh trays of meat and sushi. The room exuded a comfortable kind of energy that made us feel immediately at ease.
Understanding Korean BBQ
Korean BBQ is, after all, a very relaxed affair. Think of it like a family barbecue – only indoors. Thin slices of marinated beef, chicken and vegetables arrive at your table and it becomes your job to sear, sizzle and season them anyway you want. The idea is to eat slowly, building each bite as you go. You can roll the beef into crisp lettuce with sauce and kimchi or devour it hot off the grill. It’s social, interactive and entirely customisable.
The Sushi Experience
Before getting stuck into the sushi, we helped ourselves to some of the accompaniments on offer, including steamed rice, miso soup, a couple of spicy and BBQ dipping sauces, crisp green
salad, seaweed and tangy kimchi. They gave us a nice base and something refreshing between bites.
We started with shrimp and crab stick nigiri. Plump, sweet shrimp with a satisfying bite and soft, slightly salty crab stick, both on lightly seasoned rice. Next, came cool and silky slices of salmon and tuna sashimi. The salmon was buttery and the tuna clean and lean, perfect with a touch of wasabi and soy.
The barbecue spread that arrived next was a real standout and we wasted no time getting stuck in. Our table was overflowing with plates and plates of meat, all ready to grill. We started with the beef. The Chadolbagi, thin slices of brisket, cooked in no time. We preferred them crispy at the edges but tender and juicy in the body. Plucking them straight off the grill and dabbing them in barbecue sauce, they disappeared almost as fast as we could cook them.
The ribeye options offered one delicious variation after another.
The Deung Shim, marinated in sweet-savoury Kalbi sauce, had a glossy, caramelised crust and a bold, satisfying chew. Then there was the Joomuluck version, its house marinade giving off a slightly peppery warmth and a fragrant depth that lingered between bites. The miso steak had a softer touch – earthy, mellow, and just sweet enough to balance the savouriness. The miso seemed to tenderise the ribeye as it cooked, making each mouthful lush and buttery.
The Seng Deung Shim was the purist’s choice. It was fresh, unmarinated ribeye that let the flavour of the meat take centre stage. Lightly grilled and sprinkled with a bit of salt, it was juicy, cleantasting and deeply satisfying. The Woo Sam Gyub, another cut of
brisket, was more robust. It had a slightly smoky flavour and a fatty texture that kept it moist and flavour packed. Finally, the Yakiniku steak was sweet and delicate. The Japanese-inspired sauce had caramelised beautifully and each slice was glossy and sticky. At this point, we’d consumed enough protein to make a competitive bodybuilder blush, so we decided to take a break. We set down our chopsticks and soaked in the atmosphere around us. By now, the place was really filling up. Large groups of friends and coworkers had started to arrive, gathering around the booths and grills, clearly enjoying a relaxed evening out early in the week. People were laughing and having a fun time and the staff kept the good times rolling with a steady stream of fresh dishes. Although we were incredibly full, we had to find some space to sample the chicken dishes. Dak Bulgogi brought a nice hit of heat, spicy but not overpowering, with juicy slices that soaked up the Korean marinade. The Tori Miso was mild and savoury, with a mellow sweetness, while the Tori Shoyu, marinated in soy, turned beautifully golden on the grill with a crisp edge and a rich umami depth. Each cut brought something different to the table. We enjoyed
sweet, spicy, smoky and buttery flavours. We had great fun trying them all, grilling at our own pace and trying different combinations along the way.
The servers were always on hand, clearing away plates and offering more of what we enjoyed. One thoughtful touch was our server quietly changing the grill plate not once but three times during the meal to keep the smoke down and the flavours clean. But above everything, it was the barbecue selection that made the biggest impression. Each cut had its own texture and taste and we were able to cook it just the way we liked. This Sunday buffet was all about variety, quality and hands-on fun. We left full, satisfied and already planning a return visit.✤

It was certainly a night to remember as the cream of the country’s food and beverage (F&B) and hospitality industries joined us for the fabulous 10th edition of the Fact Dining Awards Qatar.
We couldn’t have been prouder to welcome guests, all dressed in their glad rags, to the spectacular ceremony at The St. Regis Doha.
With jazzy entertainment from the MJM Band to get the evening underway, a surprise flash mob and some amazing gifts to show our appreciation for 10 years of the sector’s support, everyone was ready for a very special evening.
And the Fact Dining Awards Qatar 2025 certainly delivered!
This year we had 50 categories, which attracted just over 100,000 unique votes, a huge jump from the 83,000 recorded last year.
As always, each category had two winners. The ‘BEST’ award, determined by an anonymous panel of industry experts, mystery shoppers and the FACT editorial team, and the ‘FAVOURITE’ chosen solely by online public votes. And, of course, the coveted Best and Favourite overall – which this year were taken by Novikov, at The St. Regis Doha, and Kai’s Songbird, at Corinthia
The Chef of the Year category, which launched to great excitement last year, once again attracted huge interest. The competition was extremely tight and there was a huge number of votes with Noof Almarri, Head Chef at Desert Rose Café, emerging as a very deserving and popular winner.
Each and every year, the Fact Dining Awards require a great deal of work from our team. And, of course, the industry’s favourite annual event couldn’t take place without the fabulous support of our amazingly generous
partners: The St. Regis Doha, Alfardan Premier Motors, Signature Events, Red Bull, Firma, Futad, SWOT, Candela Entertainment, Perfume Factory and Wellcare Pharmacy.
FACT Qatar would like to offer sincere appreciation to all of them and, of course, to all our nominees and winners for taking part.
FACT Qatar Publishing Director Chirine Halabi, said: “After a small setback, when we had to change the date due to expected storms, it was a huge honour and, to be honest, a relief to welcome our colleagues, partners and friends to the Fact Dining Awards Qatar 2025.
“We know how much everyone looks forward to this event and, of course, we are aware that the awards is not just a social occasion but also an indication of the health of our industry. Thankfully, that’s demonstrated by the strength of public participation which increases each year.
“I’d like to thank all those who took part, both winners and all the very worthy nominees. And, of course, I am extremely grateful to our wonderful partners for their support and generosity. I look forward to seeing everyone again next year.”✤

SD experienced a weekend of ultimate
a
It’s that time of year when Doha has shed the last traces of winter with balmy weather replacing our beloved chill breeze, as the city shifts into a more relaxed rhythm.
Whatever the weather, Doha never sleeps and, usually, neither do we. But as an exception, we’re pressing pause just once. For a weekend, we’re trading our usual pace for something slower, more indulgent and truly relaxing.
We're checking into Le Royal Méridien Place Vendôme Lusail and looking forward to a luxurious escape with longer showers and 12-hour sleeps. But, even with our informed anticipation, we're not fully prepared for just how restful this experience is going to be.
The check in process is smooth and welcoming. As soon as we enter our Explorer Suite, we're already assured of a welldeserved reset in one of the city’s most elegant settings.
The suite is impressive and built to cocoon you. Dream with us and imagine a space where everything is soft, wonderfully scented, bright and airy. This is how we'd describe life fit for a king – in a suite so spacious it transports you to a parallel universe of pure relaxation.
Everywhere we turn, there's something to calm our nervous system. Who designed this? And how did they accurately predict our city-life-induced stress?
Every corner is thoughtfully curated – from plush fabrics and soft carpets to a luxury marble dining table and a kingsized bed that would put any grand emperor's personal suite to shame. The blend of neutral colours with pops of yellow and terracotta make this space energetic yet relaxing and vibrant but sophisticated.
We're ready to kick-off the weekend with some fun time at The G.O.A.T. sports lounge. Located on the Mezzanine floor, this venue is perfect with European football being screened all around. The Mixology Programme on the menu immediately catches our attention with some delightful sports-themed drinks. We settle in for a glass of Michael Phelps, one of the signature mocktails (nothing to be alarmed about – just a great blend of passion syrup and apple juice). We're famished – it's been a long week – and there's probably nothing better to get started with than a plate of Spicy Shrimp Tempura. Chef Oguz surprises us with one of his creations. Not on the menu and unnamed to date, this garlic and mint yoghurt with three-hour cooked chicken stock inside (forming soft jelly like pieces) is a foodie's fantasy. We enjoy the crowd cheers, the football fanaticism, some great drinks and food, and a few fun games to keep us busy until it's time to retire into the softest bed ever.
The 12-hour sleep dream may not entirely have come true, but there is a very good reason for our 9am wake up call. In Room Dining wants our breakfast preferences and would we ever shun the very voice that's about to deliver our order to the amazing hotel chefs?
It's time to rise and discover how gorgeous our suite looks
in the morning. A beautiful curved balcony with sweeping vistas of Lusail takes us by surprise. We're not really reading types, but views of the Gulf across from Lusail Boulevard and brilliant rays of sunshine from these floorto-ceiling windows make us want to curl up with a book (or the latest edition of FACT magazine preferably) and enjoy this magical morning. We step out onto the balcony and the warm weather doesn't bother us. The balcony is just perfect overlooking the Lusail Towers in all their daytime grandeur. And breakfast arrives right on time. A regal cart adorned with food fit for a king makes quite the entrance and the staff sets up the most exquisite spread for the most important meal of the day.
The daylight showcases a quietly understated aeroplane aesthetic. The curved cabinet styles, the mustard yellow upholstery accents and the wall panelling are all subtle nods to the hotel chain's founding family - Air France. The wall panelling adds elegance to an already stylish space. It's a windy day, but we're determined to catch some sun and soak in the beautiful pool at Jardin Vendôme – the hotel's poolside area. Unfortunately, the wind isn't giving in, but luckily the kind staff direct us to another secret (well, not anymore) pool in the residents’ area. Because of its placement, the pool completely blocks out any wind but is still bathed in Doha's beautiful sunshine. How delightful! We spend a few hours until the ravenous feelings return.
Don't blame us – this hotel has been really spoiling us with seriously high-quality gourmet experiences. We get ready and head straight to Elissar's Butcher Block Brunch. We're no strangers to this venue – we've dined here enough to know that we should immediately grab a bowl of the signature (and the absolute best) Manti. This Turkish speciality is prepared to perfection here. While we're loading up on hot and cold international appetisers, Chef Vincent arrives with his weapon – a trolley laden with prime cuts of meat – followed by an invitation to choose our steak. Tenderloin, Ribeye, striploin, lamb chops, Shish Tawook – it’s an impossible choice. The marbling on the Ribeye looks tantalising (there's really no other adjective to describe it) so our choice is clear. Of course, we add in some striploin and lamb chops too. The meat platter is a real showstopper – cooked medium rare and served alongside creamed spinach, mashed potatoes and a very indulgent peppercorn sauce that we may have requested seconds of, with zero guilt. The meat is tender and so flavourful – we don't even need the sides, but who are we to refuse some much-needed fibre and carbs to go along with this hunk of protein? We close with dessert – special mention to the Tiramisu in a Croissant Cup.
And now it's time for a quick nap. A staycation warrants a siesta and we really are just following the rules. Roughly an hour later, we wake up to make our way to the newly
opened La Vallée SPA Switzerland.
Our therapist Sorormi preps us for the highlight of our staycation – a relaxing 90-minute Sleep Enhancing massage. Details matter and La Vallée doesn't skimp on them. Worthy of mentioning is the heated spa bed with the fluffiest towels we've ever laid on. This aromatherapy massage is going to make everything better. Our essential oil preference is a mix of florals and herbals, including geranium and lemon. Sorormi starts off with a foot ritual before we lie face down on the comfortable bed as she skilfully kneads her way through our tense muscles using light to medium pressure. She's attentive, gentle when she needs to be, and clearly knows what she's doing. When the massage ends, she presses a button and we comfortably move up as the back half of the bed automatically raises. The will to leave is zero, but we aren't opposed to the idea of relaxation post relaxation. A fruit platter and cold drink later, we're ready for the evening. We head back to our room to experience it a bit more, and the uber luxurious bathroom begs an exploration. Marble tiles, rainfall shower, top-of-the-line bath and body products and a soaking tub that can we could honestly live in. We end our second night feeling rejuvenated and ready for the world again, but not before our final long sleep. Waking up in the Explorer Suite is frankly an experience in itself. We waste no time and get ready for breakfast at Elissar Mediterranean Grill.
This is not your ordinary breakfast spread. The food here goes
beyond the average and you can find dishes like Menemen, Pogacha stuffed with cheese, Flat Chocolate Dipped Croissant and so much more. We get some cappuccinos to go along with it and we're ready to seize the day. The weather is fantastic today and we are amped to finally experience the scenic poolside. Sweeping views over Lusail, comfortable sunbeds (seriously, they have chunky cushions), a cold wet towel and a shot of healthy juice –this makes for the perfect afternoon in the sun. We enjoy a few dips in the pool and our experience is complemented with a fresh fruit platter and some kiwi Juice served cold.
After an entire weekend of pure indulgence and relaxation, ADRIFT Anda's honest Italian food to wind up our staycation sounds splendid. The Saturday Sabato Brunch is simple – a selection of cold cuts, hot and cold appetisers, pasta, pizzas and mains to order and a spread of dessert. The highlight is an incredible rendition of bruschetta – made with the same dough as the outlet’s popular pizzas, fermented for six to seven hours and topped with stracciatella, roasted cherry tomatoes and aged balsamic. We can't resist a Margherita Pizza before our mains. We choose a silky, addictive Wild Mushroom Risotto and a perfectly cooked Fish Fillet with Grilled Vegetables. Dessert is served buffet style and naturally, we're not skipping the Tiramisu.
Our unforgettable weekend staycation at this luxurious property has come to an end, leaving us refreshed, recharged and already planning our next visit. From the
moment we stepped in, every detail spoke of refined comfort, sophistication and elegance. We slept like royalty, dined like gourmands and truly let go of the week's stresses as we became one with the serenity of the suite and the spa. Service throughout was impeccable, warm, attentive and seamless, with staff who go above and beyond to make every guest feel seen and special. This is top-tier hospitality and the perfect experience on a sunny Doha weekend; one that you must pamper yourself with. ✤
The summer holidays are looming ahead, beckoning with a gentle balmy breeze, turquoise waters with white sand and exotic drinks with little umbrellas. Sounds idyllic, doesn’t it?
These four coastal escapes offer just the right mix of natural beauty and local charm to make your next beach break one to remember!
If it’s diversity you’re looking, Bali’s beaches have bucket loads of it. Whether you’re after stylish beachfront bars in Seminyak, reef breaks in Uluwatu or black-sand shores near Canggu, Bali caters to all kinds of travellers. Kuta Beach is one of the better-known spots, with soft sand, gentle waves and stunning sunsets – ideal for beginner surfers. For a quieter vibe, head to Jimbaran for white sand, turquoise water and romantic seafood dinners right on the beach. Over in Uluwatu, it’s all about the surf – Balangan Beach is a picturesque hidden gem with green cliffs and strong waves, while Padang Padang (yep, the one from Eat, Pray, Love ) is another pretty surf spot and great for swimming. Over on Nusa Dua Beach, you’ll find clear waters and white sand that’s perfect for snorkelling, kayaking or just floating about. And if you're chasing that perfect Instagram shot, Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida – one of the most photographed beaches in the world, with its T-Rexshaped cliff and turquoise cove – pretty much nails it. If you’re after peace and quiet, head east where Amed and Sidemen feel a world away from the tourist crush, with black volcanic beaches, traditional fishing villages and family-run warungs (traditional café s) serving nasi goreng, curries and sambals. Up north, Lovina’s darksand beaches are known for early-morning dolphin sightings, while further west, Medewi is great for long, crowd-free waves and sleepy village charm. Beyond the beaches, what sets Bali apart is its culture – daily offerings (canang sari), temple ceremonies and the scent of incense and frangipani in the air. Despite its popularity, Bali still holds onto its soul. For every busy beach club, there’s always a quiet stretch of sand just waiting to be found.
Barbados is one of those places that feels instantly familiar but still manages to surprise you. With its picture-perfect beaches and easy-going vibe, it’s no wonder it’s one of the Caribbean’s most-loved islands. The west coast – often called the Platinum Coast – is where you’ll find the calm waters, soft white sands and fancy resorts. It’s all very polished. Head east, though, and the mood changes: think crashing Atlantic waves, rugged cliffs and empty stretches of coast made for long walks and scenic drives. Paynes Bay is a go-to for its golden sands, gentle surf, swimming, snorkelling and the chance to spot sea turtles, while Miami Beach in the south feels more local – a laid-back picnic spot with food trucks and stunning sunsets. If surfing’s your thing, the Soup Bowl at Bathsheba is where the action is – steady waves and space for both newbies and seasoned wave riders. For something quieter, Mullins Beach is a good shout or Bottom Bay, with its pinktinged sand and palm trees. Barbados isn’t all about the beaches, though. Inland, you’ll see sugarcane
fields and colourful chattel houses dotted around the countryside. The food’s a big part of island life – don’t miss the national dish of cou-cou (similar to polenta) and flying fish with spicy gravy or try fresh seafood served straight off the grill with a side of fiery pepper sauce. A must-do on Friday nights is Oistins Fish Fry –a lively street market filled with music and food stalls serving delicious local seafood – the ideal place to take in the island spirit. With friendly locals, year-round sunshine and a rhythm all its own, Barbados leaves you sun-soaked and satisfied, ready to plan your return.
If you like your beach holidays with just a little bit of adventure on the side, Mah é is the perfect choice. It’s the biggest island in the Seychelles and home to the capital, Victoria, but it still feels laid-back and unspoilt in many spots. Surrounded by lush green mountains, turquoise shallows and coral reefs, there are more than 60 beaches to pick from! Beau Vallon is one of the most popular and lively – a long crescent of soft sand and calm waters that’s great for everything from lazy swims and diving to kayaking, Jet Skiing and parasailing. Dotted with bars and restaurants, it's ideal for sunset drinks. For snorkelling, head to Port Launay – the water’s packed with colourful fish. Down south, Anse Soleil is a gorgeous wide sandy bay and Anse Takamaka is picture-perfect (though swimmers should beware of strong currents and rocky reefs). Away from the shore, Morne Seychellois National Park is great for a hike –there are jungle trails, panoramic views and the chance to see some of the rarest species of flora and fauna in the world up close. Despite the high-end resorts, Mah é still feels refreshingly untouristy in many areas – you’ll often find small Creole houses, family-run eateries and colourful roadside markets. The local cuisine is a tasty mix of African, French and Indian flavours, with fragrant curries, grilled fish and coconut chutneys. Whether you’re hiking through the hills, floating in a quiet bay or just doing absolutely nothing under a palm tree, Mah é has a way of slowing everything down – in the best possible way.
Italy’s cities might get all the attention, but Sardinia is where you go to slow down – an island escape with beaches that could easily be mistaken for the Caribbean. Sure, there’s the glitzy Costa Smeralda up in the northeast, with its clear water, soft sand and designer shops attracting yachts and influencers. But the real charm is off the beaten path. Sardinia’s beaches are mostly untouched, often reached by dusty tracks or old shepherd trails. Along the Gulf of Orosei, you’ll find gems like Cala Luna and Cala Mariolu hidden in limestone cliffs – only reachable by boat or hike, and worth every step for the peace and
beauty. Over on the west coast, Spiaggia di Piscinas stands out with its golden dunes and wild open feel, great for walking, snorkelling or just doing nothing. Cala Domestica, once a mining cove, now has calm water and dramatic cliffs – perfect for a relaxed swim. Down south, beaches like Tuerredda and Porto Pino are quiet and clear, backed by pine forests and totally postcard-worthy. From the golden sands of Chia to the pink-tinged Spiaggia Rosa on Budelli Island, there’s a beach for every mood. Windsurfers love the breezy northwest but if you head inland, you’ll find colourful hill towns like Bosa and Orgosolo, where life moves slowly and lunch can last all afternoon. The food is rustic and rich – think slow-cooked meat, fresh seafood, pecorino and bold local grapes. Stay in an agriturismo for a proper Sardinian experience – cosy stone cottages, homemade pasta and olive trees everywhere. Sardinia’s the kind of place where you can unplug, unwind and enjoy the good stuff without any fuss ✤

We caught up with Gabriel Alejandro Oramas founder and arranger of Modern Jazz Melodies (MJM) to find out about his musical journey, collaborations and Qatar’s jazz scene.
How old were you when you first knew you wanted a life in music and what’s your earliest musical memory?
I was a teenager – around 14 or 15. It was that period where everything is shifting and you're trying to figure out who you are. Growing and changing alongside music made me merge with it. Since then, I honestly can’t imagine a life that’s not tied to music. My earliest musical memory is of my uncle. He’s a guitarist and a tresero – a traditional Cuban instrument – and I remember him playing in the living room. I was completely hypnotised by the sound. That moment has stuck with me forever.
Studying at Havana's Instituto Superior de Arte, part of your double major was bassoon, an instrument many people won’t have heard of. What attracted you to this in particular and, since you’re now more known as a pianist, do you still play it?
The bassoon is my first musical love – my personal gateway into the world of sound. Funny enough, I didn’t actually choose it. In Cuba’s music school system, once all the popular instruments are taken, what’s left are the so-called ‘deficit’ instruments, like bassoon or oboe. At age 10, after missing out on other options, my mom encouraged me to enrol at the Vocational School of Arts as a bassoonist, promising I could switch to something else later – like guitar or percussion. The bassoon was literally taller than me at the time.
Three months in, I got the chance to change instruments, but the bassoon had already captivated me. I stayed with it all the way through to university and, even though piano has taken centre stage in my life now, that instrument shaped who I am musically. The bassoon chose me. Unfortunately, I don’t have one now and haven’t played since 2012. But I know that if I held one today, I’d feel the same magic I felt the last time I played.
What first brought you to Qatar from your native Cuba and how is your music received here?
Before coming to Qatar, I was already travelling and sharing Cuban music in countries like Colombia, Venezuela, El Salvador and China. I originally came to Doha on a three-month contract, but something about this place captivated me. I saw an audience hungry for music, and I noticed so many musical gaps – spaces where I could contribute something meaningful. I saw potential for growth and transformation, both for the music scene and for myself. And I knew I wanted to be part of that. To grow and to give something back.
Your music fuses vintage jazz aesthetics with contemporary melodies, is there a thriving jazz scene in Qatar? Where can people hear you play?
There’s a growing appreciation for jazz in Qatar, especially among audiences looking for deeper musical experiences. I’ve been part of this wave, blending vintage jazz with modern sounds to create
something fresh. Right now, you can find me performing every Saturday at Seen with MJM and once a month at Highmore as well. These spaces are becoming cultural hubs where jazz is not just heard – it’s felt.
Aside from actually playing, you’re also a composer, arranger, producer and more, having worked with the likes of Qatar’s musical ambassador Dana Al Fardan. Please tell us a bit about that side of your musical life and, perhaps, your favourite collaboration.
I love composing and arranging because it's where imagination runs wild. Creating with Dana Al Fardan is a beautiful experience – her vision is bold and poetic. We collaborated on a project that felt cinematic, rich with emotion.
It’s been both a joy and a great opportunity to be involved in the creation of two full-length albums. The first, The Tempest, premiered recently at Katara Opera House with a sold-out show. It’s a 12-track album filled with imagery and sonic depth – one of my favourite pieces from it is Kanz
The second album, Metamorphosis, is set to be released next year. The entire process has been inspiring – from composing and arranging, to witnessing the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra bring the pieces to life. Sharing ideas and being heard by top-tier musicians has truly pushed my musical skills to a new level.
If you had to give some advice to young people seeking a musical career in Qatar, what would you tell them?
My advice is to follow your instinct above all. If there’s a piece of music – or a genre – that brings you a memory, a tear or a smile, then it’s worth holding on to. Revisit it, dive deeper into it and create new moments through that sound.
Break the barriers of musical genres – they’re just illusions meant to separate us. Music is one. Genres are simply languages and one can be translated into another. At the end of the day, music is sound that resonates with our frequency – whether it’s pop, jazz or classical.
And, though you have many obvious talents, is there a hidden one or a secret ambition that you can share with us?
A hidden talent I discovered here in Qatar is modelling. I started getting contacted by agencies and fashion designers – like Fahad Al Obaidly – to model for their creations and, surprisingly, it came quite naturally. I even did a few shoots for Shop Qatar back in 2021.
As for a secret ambition, I’ve always wanted to be a writer. Since I was a child, I’ve written poetry and short stories. Last year, I finally decided to publish a children's book about music history called The Forest Quartet. It’s available online and it means a lot to me –it’s a project that blends storytelling, education and imagination. ✤

By Damiano David
Damiano David, former Eurovision winner and charismatic frontman of Måneskin, recently released his solo debut album, Funny Little Fears and it’s a refreshing take on mainstream pop, a drastic shift from the singer’s rockstar roots. Voices opens the album with emphasis on a new start and the inner conflict he battles within, leading into Next Summer, a memorable ballad that showcases Damiano’s impressive vocal range. Dove Cameron’s surprise feature on Zombie Lady amplifies the haunting romance depicted in the track, as the pair harmonise in the last chorus. The album takes on a sombre note in Sick of Myself, where the singer discusses feelings of unworthiness. This theme carries through similarly in Born With a Broken Heart, although it translates differently as the artist sings about being unfixable and wanting someone to love him despite it. The First Time is an upbeat tune that will have your foot tapping steadily along to the beat as Damiano builds suspense to a catchy chorus before the album moves on to Perfect Life. The 12th track is a slow acoustic ballad that tugs on the listener’s heartstrings from beginning to end. The album closes with Silverlines and Solitude (No One Understands), two melancholy tracks. The latter builds to a crescendo before petering off into a calm instrumental ending. Overall, the album makes for an intriguing listen as it is vastly different from the singer’s previous sound. While each track feels similar to the next, the themes, tone and rhythm draw listeners in with his soulful voice and lyrics.
By PinkPantheress
Fancy That is PinkPantheress’ second nine-track mixtape following her earlier 2021 release. The singer first hinted at the project in March 2025 when her official website changed its theme. The first two tracks, Illegal and Girl Like Me , are catchy dance numbers with a hard-hitting beat that reminds listeners of an exciting night out. Tonight , the lead single, introduces a synth that follows the singer’s vocals. The production is both sensual and upbeat, framing the lyrics in a euphoric light. Stars is catchy and upbeat, with some of the chorus being sampled from Just Jack’s Starz in Their Eyes . Rather than sampling melody though, PinkPantheress shares similar lyrics to Just Jack’s 2007 debut.
After the 24 second Intermission , Noises starts off with the singer rapping over a steady beat, though the speed and tempo slows as the character she plays hears strange sounds and delves into a fearful paranoia. Nice to know you is a relaxing pop number with a rap break in the middle, making the song all the more memorable.
The last two tracks, Stateside and Romeo, take on a hopeful, romantic tone as the singer talks about finding her Romeo, alluding to Shakespeare’s famous play Romeo and Juliet . The album makes for a fun listening experience, verging on playful as the singer has quirky lyrics sprinkled in throughout.

The Story of ABBA Melancholy Undercover
By Jan Gradvall
More than half a century after their hit songs were recorded, ABBA still make people the world over dance and sing their hearts out. After 30 years without interviews, in 2013 music critic Jan Gradvall was granted unique access to the band. And, though it’s been a long time coming, this book is the result. Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad all share their personal thoughts. Weaving in and out of their story, Jan Gradvall outlines the context behind the development of their unique sound and shows how the story of ABBA is also the story of Sweden and the globalisation of pop culture.
Residents were left devastated after a massive glacier landslide devastated the Swiss village of Blatten. The regional government said a significant portion of the Birch Glacier, located above the village, had disintegrated with more than 90% of the alpine settlement covered in sludge. Debris also partially blocked the nearby Lonza river, threatening further damage from flooding.
Thought to be at least partially due to global warming, the collapse of the glacier was not unexpected with warnings received and the village evacuated some days before. One resident was reported
missing and, though no significant injuries were recorded, damage to properties in the area is significant. However, amid the dark news, shone a spot of light. When the evacuation order came, hundreds of residents left their homes, taking their livestock with them. But at least some of Switzerland’s famous Alpine cows were trapped in the village, unable to be taken out either on foot or by truck.
Things looked bad for the gentle creatures until the arrival of helicopters with special equipment to airlift the bovines to safety. We love a bit of Swiss efficiency.
As you know, we’re all about cuisine culture and we can’t get enough of the local and regional fare we get to try out every month. We also enjoy a bit of travel and history and a trip the UK often involves a visit to the famed waxworks museum Madame Tussauds, to see what’s been added each time we go. Some of us have even been known to pose with the models of our favourite stars – we’re realistic enough to know we’re never likely to get a real selfie with the likes of Harry Styles!
It’s now emerged that a somewhat different British icon is set to join the
regular display. For a limited time, the inimitable Greggs sausage roll – product of one on the UK high street’s favourite bakeries – is to take its place alongside the likes of footballers and royalty as part of a section dedicated to ‘icons who have helped shape modern British culture’. Well, there’s no doubt the flaky pastry treats are definitely tasty and they certainly make a stir with each new announcement on social media – our UK pals are somewhat obsessed – but cultural icons? We find that idea a bit concerning, and we reckon the selfie would be a bit rubbish too.
We’re all used to the somewhat comical goings on in Formula 1, from drivers shoving each other off the track to the seemingly never-ending round of musical seats and, of course, don’t get us started on that nonsensical 2021 Drivers’ Championship result. But now it seems racing is to get a real comic, or at least cartoon, element with the arrival of everyone’s Disney favourite, Mickey Mouse.
According to formula1.com, 2026 will see a collaboration between F1 and Disney that will see Mickey and Friends going trackside with a series of experiences,
content and, not surprisingly, merchandise aimed at promoting the cartoon mouse to F1’s 820 million fans worldwide and vice versa.
Between multiple Netflix series, Brad Pitt’s upcoming racing movie and now this, it seems F1 is making a bid for world domination.
We can just see it now, Mickey Mouse running an F1 team while Goofy, the dopey dog, gets behind the wheel – oh wait, we thought they said this wasn’t happening until 2026.
