“Sometimes the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn’t mean to take.” – Angela N. Blount
With the adrenaline of Formula 1 behind us, we’ve shifted gears – and while summer’s already threatening to make an early entrance, there’s still time to enjoy what’s left of spring (if you can call it that in this part of the world). And what better way to do it than to get exploring? Much like our cover story this month, which takes you on a voyage to the hidden corners of the island that often go unnoticed – from outdoor weekend spots to quirky cafés and fun activities.
If your calendar’s looking a little quiet, our Listen Up section has plenty to fill it. From the Bahrain Philharmonic Orchestra’s Europe Day concert to The British School of Bahrain’s joyful production of Mary Poppins Jr., there’s more happening than you might think. The Manama Theatre Club is putting a fresh spin on The Odd Couple at The British Club and Al Riwaq hosts Abbas Yousif’s solo exhibition, exploring linguistic expression.
We also bring you news from Expo 2025 Osaka, where Bahraini photographer Ishaq Madan captured the Bahrain Pavilion’s striking beauty. In our Arts & Culture pages, we chat to him about his creative journey – read our exclusive interview to see what makes him click. Over in Motoring, we took the sleek Audi A5 40 S Line Sedan for a spin and also tested the fully electric RIDDARA RD6 pickup, a first-of-its-kind for us. And don’t miss our conversation with Porsche Bahrain’s GM, Tim Price, who lives and breathes all things automotive.
On the dining front, our team tried the savoury side of Ycone Paris at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain and enjoyed a seafood feast at InterContinental Bahrain’s Hook Night, while I sampled elegant comfort food at Aurora by Brunch & Cake. We’ve also gathered some of the most interesting seasonal dining deals from around town – from brunches with a view to a four-hands dinner worth booking ahead for.
If you’re after a real escape, our travel section heads to Spain’s Andalusia for a trip filled with warmth, style and a few welcome surprises. And as always, we bring you the latest from the worlds of gadgets, fashion, beauty and entertainment.
Enjoy what’s left of spring and explore somewhere new – hope to see you around! Bye for now...

The first homes at Four Seasons Private Residences Bahrain Bay are now complete, giving new homeowners access to dedicated in-house hospitality and high-end waterfront designs.
Bahrain-based real estate development firm, Bayside Developments, has officially begun handing over the first homes at the Four Seasons Private Residences Bahrain Bay. The property has become the brand’s 57th residences, with 112 luxury homes overlooking the waters of Bahrain Bay. They are directly connected to the neighbouring Four Seasons Hotel via a private pedestrian and golf cart bridge, giving residents access to the hotel’s resort-style amenities, including its spa, dining venues and beach. To mark the milestone, homeowners and media were invited to experience the development’s state-of-the-art facilities. These include manicured gardens, a sunlit infinity edge pool with spectacular views from a landscaped terrace, a luxurious residents’ lounge, children’s area, a multi-purpose room, private jetty, a world-class gym and even a private cinema with plush velvet seating. The event also featured a waterfront barbecue hosted by the in-house hospitality team, led by Director of Residences Valencia Albuquerque, who oversees the creation of lifestyle experiences for homeowners, offering the Four Seasons brand’s renowned five-star concierge services. The development is a new standard for home ownership in Bahrain, featuring high-end interior design by Rive Gauche London and architecture by global firm Gensler, with every home overlooking Bahrain Bay, Bahrain World Trade Center, the Manama skyline or the sea. Each unit will
also feature designer kitchens with a combined living area to relax and entertain in style.
“Living at the Four Seasons will be unlike any other home ownership experience in the Kingdom, with a new level of luxury being provided every day by the highly trained in-house Residences team,” said Bayside Developments Sales Director, Yusuf Haji. “Through the dedicated concierge, our residents can request a private chef, arrange a tailored spa treatment and so much more, all from the comfort of home.
“From the very beginning, our vision for the Four Seasons Private Residences Bahrain Bay was to redefine luxury living by combining timeless elegance with uncompromised privacy.”
He also highlighted the potential for foreign residents to benefit from Bahrain’s Golden Visa, allowing for year-round stays in the Kingdom and additional lifestyle advantages. Positioned close to The Avenues – Bahrain and MODA Mall, the Residences also offers easy access to shopping and dining.
With the successful handover of the first batch of the Residences complete, the remaining units are already witnessing strong interest. ✤
The Kingdom returns to the World Expo for a fourth time with a sensory exhibition that ties tradition to forward-looking design.
Bahrain has inaugurated its national pavilion for its fourth World Expo, now underway in Osaka, Japan, under the theme ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives’. Organised by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA), the national pavilion, ‘Connecting Seas’, reflects Bahrain's historical connection to the sea, drawing inspiration from the island’s seafaring heritage and traditional dhow construction, integrating Japanese joinery techniques. Expo 2025 Osaka, which runs until October 13, is expected to attract more than 28 million visitors, with contributions from around 160 countries.
“Participating in the Expo for the fourth consecutive time provides us with a vital global stage to showcase our nation’s cultural achievements and solidify Bahrain’s position as a leading hub of innovation, culture and a dynamic, advanced economy,” said His Excellency Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, President of BACA and Commissioner General of the Bahrain Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka.
Set in the ‘Empowering Lives’ zone, the 995sq/m and 13.7m four-level Bahrain pavilion is designed by Paris-based Lebanese architect Lina Ghotmeh. Made from wood and cooled by coastal winds, it’s one of the Expo’s most sustainable structures. With an open, dhow-like form, it is constructed from around 3,000 pieces of unengineered wood using intricate joinery, allowing for natural ventilation and minimal waste, with nearly all materials being reusable.
Inside, the pavilion can be experienced through five sensory zones, featuring collaborations with Bahraini design company Shepherd Studio, French multimedia studio La Méduse, as well as local and international artists, including smell artist Sissel Tolaas and artist composer Hassan Hujairi. A separate section, curated by the Economic Development Board, highlights Bahrain’s strategic location and global standing as an open economic centre with an investment-friendly environment. A café helmed by Chef Tala Bashmi offers a menu combining Bahraini flavours with Japanese ingredients, while a gift shop and staff uniforms by Bahraini fashion designer, Lulwa Al Amin, reflect local design and heritage.
As part of the Kingdom’s contribution to the Expo, a special edition McLaren F1 helmet is also on display at the pavilion. Unveiled at the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix and worn by McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, the helmet was designed and produced in Bahrain, blending Bahraini craftsmanship with innovation. Its design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese sumi-e ink paintings, symbolising the longstanding ties between the two countries. ✤

Al Riwaq Art Space is hosting a solo exhibition by Bahraini artist Abbas Yousif, focussing on his evolving relationship with text and its emotional resonance.
Art lovers with a special interest in language are in for a treat as Al Riwaq’s ongoing exhibit, Abstracted Linguistics, features the works of local artist, Abbas Yousif.
Drawing on his long-standing fascination with language, particularly the stylistic variations of Arabic calligraphy, Abbas explores the ways in which text can hold both meaning and emotion, expanding the possibilities of visual language. Also a prolific writer and educator, his recent paintings and prints incorporate letters, marks and colours to explore a personal narrative; a visible abstract environment shaped by individual experiences and observations.
Raised near the sea, with a panoramic view of its countless hues of blue, Abbas recreates these memories as land reclamation compels him to reminisce in his own visual language. Vibrant tones mingle with indecipherable
marks, woven together with literal references to both turmoil and optimism.
The artist’s abstract compositions invite reflection and multiple readings, from allusions to Sufism in his circular pieces to the symbolic presence of purple and its ties to chaos in religious and mythical histories. The paintings and prints open a space where past, present and his vision of the future converge – a future where the sea will reclaim the land.
Abstracted Linguistics runs until May 22 and Al Riwaq opening hours are from 10am to 8pm. ✤

A much-loved comedic play comes to The British Club Bahrain this May, brought to life by Manama Theatre Club with a fresh and diverse cast.
Prepare to be amused this month as Manama Theatre Club presents The Odd Couple, Neil Simon’s classic comedy about two mismatched roommates. Staged at The British Club Bahrain from May 27 to 31, the production offers a fresh take on the 1965 original, while staying true to its spirit.
The Odd Couple follows Felix Ungar, a neurotic and obsessively clean man who, after being thrown out by his wife, moves in with Oscar Madison, a carefree, slovenly sportswriter. Their opposing characters spark constant friction and create hilarious situations, but despite their frustrations, the two form an unlikely bond.
The play explores themes of friendship, compatibility and the challenges of cohabitation. With witty dialogue and memorable characters, The Odd Couple remains a beloved comedy that has inspired multiple adaptations for film and television.
“The humour of The Odd Couple endures because it captures the timeless clash of personalities – the easy-going, messy Oscar versus the anxious, perfectionist Felix,” said Director Ghassan Chemali. “In staging this production, we wanted to stay true to the original spirit of 1960s' New York, while also
bringing something new to the table.
“By embracing a cast diverse in gender, race and cultural backgrounds, we add a fresh dynamic without altering the play’s heart. After all, diversity has always been part of New York’s fabric – so this evolution feels not like a departure but an affirmation of its authenticity.”
Produced by Hannah Turner, the play features a cast of three women and five men, including Nasser Milad as Oscar and Mohamed Ghayeb as Felix. The Odd Couple promises a lively, character-driven performance that challenges stereotypes and celebrates the enduring chaos – and comedy – of human connection.
Doors open at 7pm, with the show starting at 7.30pm. Tickets can be purchased at manama.platinumlist.net, priced at BD10 for general admission and BD8.5 for British Club members. ✤ GO: FOLLOW @MTCBAHRAIN ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

With a shared focus on sustainability and empowerment, Nespresso has partnered with Sarah’s Bag to launch the first regional upcycled product.
Luxury Lebanese fashion house, Sarah’s Bag, has partnered with Nespresso to create a limited-edition artisanal bag, crafted using recycled aluminium coffee capsules. Featuring a striking 3D flower centrepiece, each piece is handcrafted using 75 to 80 recycled Nespresso capsules and delicate glass beads, merging upcycling with the artistry of Lebanese embroidery. Handmade by women, each bag takes more than 15 hours to create. Designed in Sarah’s Bag’s iconic clutch format, the bag’s canvas is made of woven straw to resemble jute coffee bags and lined with soft cotton. It features a brass push clasp-fastening, an inside pocket and a detachable 60cm brass chain, combining artisanal elegance with practicality.
The recycled capsules are cleaned and delivered to Sarah’s Bag by Arc en Ciel, Nespresso’s official recycling partner in Lebanon. They are then flattened with a hand tool by a team of artisans at Sarah’s Bag and transformed into delicate pieces of sequin, which are then embroidered into the floral designs on the bag.
The collaboration is built on a shared commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Just as Nespresso empowers coffee farmers through its AAA Sustainable Quality Program, Sarah's Bag has been transforming lives through artisanal craftsmanship since its was founded in 2000 by Sarah Beydoun. The company grew from her research into Dar Al Amal, an NGO supporting women at risk and female ex-prisoners. Inspired by their resilience,
Sarah created the brand to provide these women with training, employment and economic independence, turning a social mission into a global luxury brand.
“Nespresso strongly believes in circularity and reviving materials into second life objects,” said Shirin Moayyad, Coffee Storyteller at Nespresso HQ, Vevey, Switzerland.
“Our partnership with Sarah's Bag marks the Middle East’s first upcycled product, bringing our vision into the world of fashion, collaborating with a social entrepreneur who works to support women in her native Lebanon.”
Sarah, the Creative Director at Sarah’s Bag, added: “The partnership between Nespresso and Sarah’s Bag is one that is extremely meaningful as we have many synergies with Nespresso’s value of women's care, and their commitment to sustainability is one that deeply resonates with me.
“At Sarah’s Bag, every piece tells a story – not just of craftsmanship but of resilience and empowerment. Transforming used Nespresso capsules into artful, handembroidered designs felt like a natural extension of our mission to create fashion with a purpose.”
The limited-edition bags are available for purchase online at sarahsbag.com and at the Sarah’s Bag boutique in Lebanon, priced at USD350. ✤

In the heart of Muharraq lies Bahrain’s oldest and last active dhow building yard – a living link to the island’s maritime past. Here, skilled craftsmen still build traditional wooden boats by hand, using techniques passed down through generations. Once essential to pearl diving, fishing and trade, dhows remain a symbol of the country’s seafaring spirit. Along the adjacent beach, you’ll spot half-finished vessels, dhows under repair, timber piles and scattered tools, offering a glimpse into a dying craft. There are no road signs but head towards the Fisherman Port in Muharraq and you can’t miss it. The site remains a working yard, so caution is advised. And if you’re interested in speaking with the craftsmen, it’s best to take an Arabic speaking friend with you.

FACT took the new Audi A5 40 S Line Sedan for a spin to discover a beautifully designed car that blends power, tech and comfort.
025 marks a new chapter in Audi's prosperous history. After 30 years of successful A4 production and sales, this world-renowned brand has sharpened the design of its much-loved saloon and is now launching it under the upgraded A5 series.
This month, FACT had the privilege of test-driving this fresh-faced formation, compliments of the team at Audi Centre Bahrain.
We have always loved the A4; however, the moment the completely redesigned A5 came into view, we applauded the upgrade. Firstly, the vehicle proportions have been clearly modified, with a longer wheelbase, large wheels and a low sporty body that defines first-class construction. The compact-looking greenhouse has been elegantly crafted, flowing seamlessly to the rear in a sweeping arc. The rear window has a coupéesque look, emphasised by the short yet stylish tailgate. An eye-catching spoiler lip adds an extra touch of athleticism. Staring at the saloon head-on, we could not miss the wide and significantly flatter proportioned Singleframe with its three-dimensional honeycomb structure. Complementing this flattering design element are the slim and visually appealing LED headlights that can be personalised with eight different designs, providing additional shape to the face of the A5. We also loved how the bonnet has been expertly integrated into the bumper. Once at the back end, we took in the new rear hatch, which opened smoothly with the rear window, allowing easy access to the sizable 445-litre luggage compartment, a space that can be increased up to 1,299 litres with the rear seating folded flat – a brand-new saloon design concept for Audi. The rear, three-dimensionally offset LED light strip endows the back end with real presence, telling everyone on the roads, “You've just been passed by the new A5”. A modern bumper design, complete with a dark diffuser and high-end rectangular exhaust tips, further amplifies the top-quality character of this creation.
We expected a classy and comfortable cabin in the new A5, yet we were still surprised by the human-centric design. Boasting a generous sense of space, premium comfort levels and high-end materials throughout, the A5 ticks all the first-class boxes one would expect from Audi. What impressed us most was the clear layout and easy operation of the interior, as everything seemed to be geared towards the needs of the occupants. Tech-wise, this sporty saloon houses a new operating concept that increased interaction with the vehicle thanks to the E³ (Endto-End Electronic Architecture). Its core elements are five highperformance computers, which Audi calls High Computing Performance (HCP). They cover all vehicle functions – from the drivetrain and assistance systems to the infotainment and comfort systems to the safety systems and back-end networking. We found the Digital Stage to be extraordinary. It features a slim, free-standing Audi MMI panoramic display with a curved design and OLED technology. It comprises the Audi virtual cockpit with an 11.9-inch visible screen diagonal and a 14.5-inch MMI touch display. Furthermore, our test drive model contained the optional
10.9-inch MMI front passenger display, which was perfectly integrated into the dashboard design.
The new panoramic glass roof consists of six segments that can be made either transparent or non-transparent. You can decide yourself via the MMI touch display at which point the sun can enter. Having inspected so many vehicles over the years, we always love discovering something new. Audi delivered on this. The A5 has a configurable head-up display that has been further developed compared to its predecessor. It was the first time we have been able to control vehicle and infotainment functions via the head-up display. A truly novel experience for us seasoned test drivers.
Audi has delivered a fresh powertrain for the new A5. This construction consists of the new MHEV plus system based on a 48-volt on-board electrical system. It supports a 2.0-litre, fourcylinder combustion engine that produces a maximum output of 150hp and a maximum torque of 280Nm.
The moment we engaged the ignition, the sound of the capable powertrain roared into action. Gently applying weight to the accelerator, we could feel the available capacity waiting to be called forth.
Cruising casually in this front-wheel drive, we could feel the cornering and braking abilities of the new A5 to be top-notch. Combined with the suspension system, this setup was an exceptionally comfortable ride. Audi has clearly developed the suspension to ensure the A5 offers precise, effortless and largely neutral handling.
Once at our test site, we pressed the pedal to the metal, pushing the 2.0-litre engine to its limits. We managed to smoothly power
Boasting a generous sense of space, premium comfort levels and high-end materials throughout, the A5 ticks all of the first-class boxes one would expect from Audi.”
the new A5 from 0-100km/h in a respectable 9.8 seconds. This seductive saloon also offers a top speed of 214km/h.
Another aspect of this powertrain that impressed us was the PTG, which can add up to 18kW of electric power to the overall output of the combustion engine. When decelerating, the PTG feeds energy back into the battery (recuperation) at up to 25kW. Needless to say, Audi has included an array of safety and driver assistance systems to ensure the well-being of you and your loved ones whilst out on the roads.
In the new A5, Audi has provided high levels of comfort, performance, safety and technology that are sure to stand out in the upper mid-sized saloon segment. ✤
FACT enjoyed an all-new experience in our first fully electric pickup encounter.
Throughout our many years of test-driving vehicles in Bahrain, we have had the privilege of sampling numerous brands, many of which have delivered multiple impressive models. What excites us most, however, is the opportunity to try out something completely different. Thanks to Aloula Motors, we received just that opportunity in the form of Geely’s freshly unveiled highperformance, fully electric pickup, the RIDDARA RD6.
Not knowing what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised the first time we laid eyes on this unique vehicle. Our first impression was that RIDARRA’s pickup design successfully blends contemporary ruggedness with polished sophistication.
A minimalistic approach has been utilised in the wide front face design, endowing the pickup with a pristine and modish appearance. From head-on, we appreciated the sleek nature of the phantom grille, contrasted by the bold RIDDARA logo, flanked by racing wing ABD Matrix LED lights. At the sides, we took in the dimensions of this sturdy vehicle. The RD6 features a 5.26m body with a spacious 1,200-litre super rear bucket. Measuring 1.525m by 1.450m with a depth of 540mm, it offers ample cargo room with up to 865kg loading capacity. This feisty machine also features an aluminium luggage rack
and can tow up to 2,500kg. The 18-inch alloy wheels add to its rugged demeanour.
At the rear, The RD6 continued to impress with X styling combo LED tail lights stretching across the tailgate, with the RIDDARA logo underneath. Opening the tailgate, we discovered multiple outlets that could power just about anything and everything, including small fridges, laptops, camping equipment and work tools. Its battery offers a world-leading 21kwh discharge capability, enabling it to power multiple 12V or 24V appliances, simultaneously – an outstanding feature for both outdoor adventurers and mobile workers.
The clean design of the exterior extends into the cabin, where we were met by a fusion of luxury and practicality.
The high ceiling of the interior meant plenty of headroom, with the six-way electronically adjustable driver’s seat and the four-way manually adjustable front passenger seat ensuring commanding positions from which we could view the roads. Tastefully stitched, premium leather adorns the dashboard, seats and door panels, with soft-touch materials prevalent on the inner surfaces.
We really appreciated the minimalist approach to the cockpit design, with all necessary equipment perfectly positioned for
optimal use. A leather-wrapped, multifunctional steering wheel adds to the practical setup. A 70-litre storage compartment under the hood and an additional 48-litres with the rear seating folded flat bring further functionality.
To ensure a pleasant and hygienic travelling environment, RIDDARA has included an electromotive air conditioner along with a PM2.5 Air Purification system.
The spacious interior is not only crafted for comfort and adventure but is packed with tech that keeps both drivers and passengers connected and informed.
A 12.3-inch suspension central touchscreen meant we could easily access car functionality and info. This system is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, giving a range of further connection and entertainment options. A six-speaker audio system further enhances the impressive setup.
When buying a pickup, you need to know it has the power to transport what is needed and in the case of an electric model, the range to reach the destination. The RD6 proved capable of both. The design is based on the M.A.P. (Multiple Attached Platform) 100% electric pickup truck architecture, independently developed by Geely Holding Group. As China's first and only platform built specifically for electric pickup trucks, it integrates Geely Group's cutting-edge technology and rich experience in the field of electric vehicles.
Powering this rear wheel drive’s high-performance Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is a 63kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery. This powertrain produces 200kW of motor power and a peak motor torque of 384Nm. Cruising around the Kingdom, we found the pickup to be a quiet
and smooth ride; one that was agile, responding well to both acceleration and braking. We negotiated corners without much effort and despite being a 2WD, we could tell it would handle far more challenging terrain when required. These capabilities are in large part due to the front McPherson independent suspension and rear multilink independent suspension setup. Three driving modes also ensure optimum performance in different conditions. Once at our test site, we managed to accelerate from 0-100km/h in a commendable 7.3 seconds and efficiently achieved the top speed of 185km/h. Not bad at all for a large pickup. Distance-wise, a range of 377km is possible on a full charge.
Spending time with the RD6, we learnt that RIDDARA had no intention of cutting corners on any aspect of the car’s design or its capabilities. This is especially true when it comes to on-road safety systems and features, which include a reverse sensor, a reversing camera, an Electronic Stability Program (ESP), electric assistant braking, a traction control system, hill-start assist, hill descent control, a tyre pressure monitoring system, a child safety seat interface, child safety door locking and four airbags.
Our first impression was that RIDARRA’s pickup design successfully blends contemporary ruggedness with polished sophistication.” “
RIDDARA is establishing a whole new category in the Bahraini market with an affordable yet high-performance, fully electric pickup that proved capable, practical, well-equipped and enjoyable to drive. ✤ GO: CALL 1712 1222 FOR
A new chapter in Aston Martin’s performance story, the DBX S delivers driving thrills and luxury in equal measure.
Aston Martin has introduced the DBX S – a new flagship that takes the performance, design and engineering of its acclaimed SUV to another level. The DBX S continues the marque’s tradition of using the ‘S’ suffix to denote a special, high-performance version of an existing model. Building on the dynamic appeal of the DBX707, this latest model is lighter, more powerful, assertive in design and delivers one of the most responsive and engaging driving experiences yet.
Powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, upgraded with technology from the upcoming Valhalla supercar, the DBX S produces a mighty 727PS and 900Nm of torque. With greater urgency at the top of the rev range, the result is a 0-100km/h time of just 3.3 seconds and a 0.3-second improvement in the 0-200km/h sprint. Top speed remains unchanged at 310km/h. A new modified exhaust system also enhances both performance and character. Like the DBX707, the DBX S distributes power between the front and rear wheels in variable proportion via an innovative nine-speed ‘wet clutch’ transmission, delivering extreme launch performance. In addition to power upgrades, Aston Martin has focussed on intelligent weight reduction. The optional carbon fibre roof, which alone saves 18kg, also helps lower the centre of gravity for more dynamic handling. New magnesium wheels – a first for any SUV – remove a further 19kg of unsprung mass in the 23-inch option, improving steering precision and feel. Other lightweight options, including a polycarbonate honeycomb grille, help cut up to 47kg overall.
The DBX S also benefits from suspension updates introduced last year, faster steering ratios and adaptive drive modes. The
car maintains impressive body control, even during high-speed cornering, thanks to electronic roll control and adjustable spring rates.
Visually, the DBX S leaves no doubt it's the most dynamic, sporting, ultra-luxury SUV on the market. A dramatic black vaned front grille, new splitter and diffuser and a transformed rear with vertically stacked quad exhausts give the car a commanding road presence. Distinctive ‘S’ badging on the front fenders, alongside the unique wraparound daytime running light design reinforce its unmistakeable identity.
A new lower livery in Rosso Corsa Red, Trophy Silver and Podium Green frames the lower body, including side sills and exhausts.
Carbon fibre can also be specified for the wing mirrors, side strakes and lower door sill.
Inside, the DBX S continues the 'S' branding with a bespoke herringbone seat pattern, trimmed in sporting Alcantara as standard or full semi-aniline leather. Specified red seatbelts, ‘S’ suffix seat embroidery, along with the iconic Aston Martin wings add further character.
The cabin also features the marque’s state-of-the-art in-house developed infotainment system and an 800W, 14-speaker QuantumLogic surround sound system. An optional 1,600W Bowers & Wilkins upgrade is also available, with 23 speakers acoustically engineered to the interior dimensions.
The DBX S is available to order now, with deliveries expected in Q4 2025. ✤

Living and breathing all things automotive, the General Manager of Porsche Bahrain brings two decades of dynamic industry experience to his role. He talks about the brand experience, his Porsche pick for a road trip and a fun fact from his childhood days!
As the GM of Porsche Bahrain for almost two years now, you’re running one of the biggest luxury brands in the region. How do you stay ahead of the curve in this competitive automotive market?
At the heart of everything is the customer experience. This isn't just about selling cars; it's about building relationships and integrating customers into the Porsche family. We strive to exceed expectations at every touchpoint – from the initial showroom visit and test drive personalisation to bespoke after-sales service and exclusive owner events. Understanding the unique preferences and high expectations and making customers feel part of the Porsche family is key – we focus on exclusive driving events, track days and lifestyle gatherings that resonate with our customers. This provides opportunities for them to experience the full potential of their vehicles and connect with fellow enthusiasts, strengthening brand loyalty.
It’s also important that we constantly monitor market trends, competitor activities and economic indicators specific to Bahrain and the wider region. This allows us to adapt our strategies, whether it involves product placement or marketing campaigns, ensuring we remain relevant and competitive.
What's the most unique customisation request you've received from a Porsche client?
That's a fascinating question! Client confidentiality is paramount in our business, so I can't share specific details about individual requests we've handled here at Porsche Centre Bahrain. Every custom order is a personal journey between the client and Porsche. However, I can speak generally about the types of unique requests Porsche addresses globally through its
Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur and the even more specialised Sonderwunsch (special request) programme. These programmes exist precisely to turn extraordinary visions into reality, and you can spend as much as BD100,000 to customise your car.
If you were going on a road trip in any Porsche model, what would it be and why?
My pick would have to be the 911 Targa. It's such a brilliant car because it truly delivers that ‘best of both worlds’ experience, adapting perfectly to any weather. Whether I was driving it in the UK or exploring the GCC, it consistently proved to be a fantastic and never-disappointing ride.
Could you share a fun fact about yourself that most people might not know?
You know, it's kind of funny, but when I was a kid, all I wanted to be was a bus driver. I think it was just the idea of being in control of a vehicle and driving around. It's interesting how that desire to drive has stuck with me, even if the vehicles I'm interested in now are a bit different!
You’re a long way away from your home in Wales. How are you finding Bahrain and what do you do to unwind after a busy day at work?
The fantastic work-life balance I've found in Bahrain, a significant improvement over the UK, has truly allowed me to embrace my sporty side. I'm a regular at the gym and have become quite addicted to padel, playing at least twice a week. Plus, being a bit of a foodie, I love exploring the incredible local Bahraini cuisine most weekends. ✤
Your all-encompassing role takes you from sales to hospitality events and forums. Which one of these hats do you enjoy wearing the most?
While every aspect of my role plays a vital part in achieving our overall goals, I am particularly passionate about the strategic sales function. Sales sits at the core of business growth, allowing me to work closely with clients, gain a deep understanding of their needs and provide tailored solutions that deliver measurable value – it is both intellectually engaging and professionally rewarding. Participating in hospitality events and industry forums is equally important. These platforms allow us to strengthen our brand visibility, stay informed about industry innovations and engage with peers and stakeholders, presenting an opportunity to represent Areen Hospitality on a broader scale. Ultimately, it's the balance between client-focussed strategy and industry engagement that makes the role both dynamic and fulfilling.
With more than 16 years of experience in hospitality, what is it about the industry that has kept you motivated all these years? What has continually inspired me is the dynamic, people-centric nature of the hospitality industry. It thrives on connection, service and adaptability – qualities that resonate deeply with me, both personally and professionally. Every day presents new challenges and opportunities, whether it's understanding evolving guest expectations, tailoring experiences or responding to market shifts. What truly keeps me motivated is the tangible impact we can make. In hospitality, success is measured not just in numbers but in guest satisfaction, lasting impressions and meaningful partnerships. The ability to contribute to someone’s experience gives my work a real sense of purpose. Over the years, I’ve also been inspired by the resilience and innovation this industry demands. It has taught me to be agile, solution-oriented and collaborative.
When you're not working, where are you most likely to be and what’s your favourite spot in Bahrain?
Outside of work, I deeply value spending quality time with my family and taking moments to unwind and recharge. One of my favourite places in Bahrain is Bahrain Harbour. It beautifully combines modern elegance with a sense of tranquillity, making it an ideal spot for reflection. Whether it’s a quiet walk along the waterfront or simply taking in the skyline views, the area offers a peaceful escape that inspires me both personally and professionally. In addition, I’m passionate about sports, which play a key role in maintaining my physical and mental wellbeing. Regular exercise helps me relieve stress and stay energised. It’s an essential part of my routine that supports both personal balance and professional performance.
A journey through textures, balance and unexpected pairings, Bushra Hakim samples the new savoury menu at Ycone Paris.
Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain is an architectural marvel, a property that beautifully brings together the brand’s elegance with the island’s rich heritage. With its villa-style layout, graceful arches and intricate detailing, the space feels both luxurious and deeply connected to its surroundings. This harmonious fusion of culture and sophistication extends to its culinary offerings, including Ycone Paris, the brainchild of renowned pâtissier Yazid Ichemrahen. Known for his delicate approach to sweetness, Chef Yazid has now ventured into savoury creations, applying the same finesse and restraint that define his desserts.
Walking into Ycone, you’re immediately enveloped in an atmosphere of understated luxury. The space is an elegant fusion of modern and classic, where neutral tones meet warm gold and brass accents. Luxurious marble surfaces, arched doorways and soft, ambient lighting create an inviting yet sophisticated setting. Attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the experience, from the plush seating to the meticulously chosen tableware –each dish is presented on Bernardaud plates, accompanied by gleaming Christofle cutlery.
Eager to experience how this philosophy translates into the menu, I had the pleasure of trying new dishes, starting with the Tataki of Watermelon. At first glance, the dish was visually deceptive, thin slices of charred watermelon arranged so precisely that they could easily be mistaken for tuna. The flavours played with contrasts – smoky watermelon met a bonito tuna infusion and the creamy sharpness of feta, resulting in a dish that was fresh
yet perplexing, with fishy undertones blending unexpectedly with the sweetness of the fruit.
The Cucumber Salad was an elegant and visually striking creation. Thin cucumber ribbons were artistically rolled and arranged on a bed of silky yuzu cream cheese. Golden, crispy tuile-like crackers, plump mustard seeds, dried cranberries and an assortment of seeds, such as pumpkin, created an incredible balance of textures – crisp, crunchy, chewy and creamy all at once. The dish was light yet layered, with the yuzu cream cheese adding a luscious contrast to the fresh cucumber, while the mustard seeds and dried fruit infused bursts of acidity and sweetness, making for a refreshing and complex bite.
Next came an assortment of finger sandwiches, each boasting distinct flavours. The truffle sandwich was an umami powerhouse, packed with an intense truffle hit enhanced by the pickled mustard seed and creamy mayonnaise. The zucchini sandwich, laced with yuzu cream cheese and a delicate white balsamic vinaigrette, was silky and subtly tangy. Meanwhile, the smoked salmon sandwich stood out with its luxurious tobiko orange butter, lending bursts of briny freshness to every bite.
Moving to something heartier, the Miso Marinated Grilled Eggplant arrived looking beautifully charred, plated with avocado and hazelnuts, drizzled with miso dressing. It had a deep salty-sweet richness with an earthy, leafy undertone – perhaps an acquired taste but undoubtedly well-executed. Then, came my favourite, Spaghetti with Caviar. A luxurious plate of al dente pasta swirled
in a creamy sauce, punctuated by the salinity of caviar and the freshness of chives. The chicken jus added a savoury depth, making it a well-balanced indulgence. Paired with a vibrant drink of fresh orange juice and pomegranate, the savoury experience was light yet satisfying.
Of course, no visit to Ycone would be complete without dessert, and here is where Chef Yazid’s expertise truly shone. The Valentino Intense Orange Blossom was a vision – airy, almost ethereal, with a soft crunch of chocolate giving way to a fragrant orange blossom mousse. The pistachio praline inside added richness without overpowering the floral elegance of the dish.
The Intense Almond delivered exactly what its name promised – an almond lover’s dream. The panna cotta base was silky and creamy, complemented by an almond mousse that brought a marzipan-like depth. Finished with a delicate crunch, it was an exquisite interplay of textures.
But the real star? The 100% Vanilla. A masterpiece of simplicity and complexity, this signature dessert was an ode to vanilla in its purest form. Crafted from a blend of Tahitian and Madagascar vanilla and infused for 72 hours, it was velvety, aromatic and deeply satisfying. A dessert that lingered on the palate, leaving behind a lasting impression of indulgent refinement. With this new savoury menu, Ycone Paris is undoubtedly carving out a fresh identity beyond its renowned sweets. The minimalist approach to salt allows the natural flavours to take centre stage, creating a dining experience that is refined, balanced and utterly unique. Whether it’s for a light lunch or a dessert indulgence, this is a culinary journey worth taking. ✤
Liz O’Reilly enjoyed a copious serving of oceanic bounty at the new Hook Seafood Night at the InterContinental Bahrain.
It’s always a pleasure to visit the InterContinental Bahrain; the property is classy with its expansive, classical foyer and everyone is always so friendly and welcoming. I’ve been going there for years and, from my first time, the greeting has always carried the warmth of family with an underlying current of luxury and excellent service. Our sojourn, on this occasion, was to sample the newly launched Hook Seafood Night, which is staged on Thursdays in the area adjoining Selections and the pool. The restaurant’s décor reflected a playful vibe with mini surfboards adorning extensive displays that teem with oceanic goodness, and plenty of other marine memorabilia dotted around added to the vibe.
Having foregone lunch in anticipation, we arrived hungry and immediately headed to the soup section to try the Tom Yum and Seafood Chowder – the Tom Yum was a little oily for my taste but the flavour was spot on, spicy without being overpowering, with plenty of prawns and fishy protein with galangal and lemongrass.
My favourite, and one of my top dishes of the evening, was the chowder – rich, creamy, deeply flavourful and with a generous helping of fish and seafood. I was so impressed that I actually went back for a second bowl after I’d tried some of the other options. There’s no doubt that this Seafood Night is the genuine article with so many options available. Aside from chicken or beef dishes for those who didn’t fancy the maritime options, pretty much everything else had an oceanic bent from ready dishes to a huge range of fresh catch laid out fish market-style.
To get started, I headed to the extensive salad station where we were truly spoilt for choice. The options seemed almost endless and everything looked bright, fresh and appealing from prawns on a half shell topped by glistening black beads of roe to avocado and tuna tapas and from the 1970s’ favourite, shrimp cocktail, pretty in its Marie Rose sauce in shooter glasses, to seafood terrine and layered salmon cobb salad.
I opted for salmon, mango and lettuce tacos, their crispy tortilla shells offering a deliciously satisfying crunch before giving way to a chunky filling of sweet salmon and mango slathered in a decadent creamy sauce.
The beetroot-cured salmon also caught my eye, particularly after Chef Emmanouil, the property’s Director of Food & Beverage Operations, explained that the fish is cured in-house. Decadently pink, its edges taking on a deeper hue from the rich, earthy beet, it paired perfectly with a slather of horseradish cream and crunchy garlic speckled toast.
My dining companion moved on to the ready dishes where she’d already spotted the inclusion of her particular favourite, seafood laksa. She found the delicate flavours of belacan and coconut milk permeating the succulent seafood deeply satisfying. I was, once again, impressed with the wide choice, including the likes of Fish Sayadieh, highlighting the rich culinary heritage of Lebanon, alongside Shrimp Machboos and Prawn Tikka Masala – a spoonful of this was enough to appreciate the delicate fusion of garlic, lime and coconut, which felt like a warm hug on my taste buds.
I decided to head to the poached shellfish and extensive sushi station for a heaping plate of mussels and clams. I have to confess that I’m not usually a big fan of shellfish but these looked so fresh and appealing on their bed of ice that I was tempted
to tuck in and was glad I did. The mussels were firm, perfectly cooked, their flesh bringing a satisfying toothiness to the bite, but the clams were my favourite. Tiny orbs of pink perfection, lightly sweet and slightly briny, they were a delight and singlehandedly changed my thoughts on shellfish for the future.
Then it was time for the main event as we chose our fish from the fish market stand, which featured everything from barracuda and sheri fish to king fish, safi, sea bream and salmon.
I went for king fish and salmon steaks and the king fish was an immediate favourite. Lightly oily and richly flavourful with a light dusting of garlic on the grill, all it needed was a squeeze of lemon before I was gleefully parting the meaty chunks, which yielded succulently to my fork. An absolute joy.
My dining companion went for fried shrimp, which arrived in a delicate, light coating and were quickly demolished, their bright, meaty texture combining perfectly with a crisp, green salad. We also tried the lobster, of which various options were available. Sweet, tender and cooked to perfection, it was one of the stars of the show, for which we would definitely return.
I was tempted by the fresh oyster station but decided my newfound appreciation for shellfish didn’t extend quite that far.
My friend, however, took full advantage, enthusiastically enjoying the rich flavour profile of the premium molluscs with their earthy, slightly salty taste.
In need of a break, we headed out to sit poolside with our drinks, enjoying the balmy evening before heading back in to tackle the desserts of which there were, unsurprisingly, many.
The Umm Ali was a particular hit, my friend describing it as
rich, creamy and utterly satisfying. I went for the Eton Mess, a joyous confection of cream and raspberry sauce, all topped with a sweet, fresh strawberry. Despite being already very well served, it was gone in minutes and I even found space for a mini lemon meringue – something that always delights and which I didn’t even try to resist. Tart lemon, sticky, chewy meringue and a crumbly sweet crust. The perfect end to our evening’s adventure. From the warmth of the welcome to the sheer variety of the offering, we couldn’t have asked for more. Safe to say, InterCon, we’re hooked! ✤
Tradition meets creativity in a stunning space at Aurora by Brunch & Cake, as Apple Sharma discovered when she embarked on a culinary exploration of its inventive menu.
It was a beautiful spring afternoon as I parked my car at Marassi Galleria mall, excited for my lunch rendezvous with colleagues at Aurora by Brunch & Cake. I’d heard amazing things about Brunch & Cake and having walked past it many a time on my shopping sprees, I was even more eager to try Aurora – an elevated concept of the brand. Before you even step inside, the ambience can be felt from the outside, exuding elegance and style. With a motto of food based on ‘grandma’s goodness’, Aurora stays true to that promise – and then some – with an innovative and deliciously sophisticated menu in a luxurious setting.
As I walked in, I was greeted by Brand Manager, Renee Naude, who welcomed me graciously into the warm, inviting glow of the interior. A marine beach theme flows through the restaurant – from a grand oyster shell and pearl sculpture at the entrance to surfboards mounted on the wall and chandeliers shaped like upside-down boats. Nothing feels kitschy; it’s all tastefully done in muted tones of cream and tan, paired with terrazzo floors and marbled tables. The details are thoughtful, right down to the crocheted cushions and seashell, starfish and seahorse murals. We sat in the main dining area with a clear view of the outdoor terrace as a soundtrack of mellow, upbeat music set the perfect relaxed mood. As we settled in, we were greeted by Chef Subhash Kothiyal, who explained that the menu is specially curated for Aurora, the only one in Bahrain. Most dishes came paired with drinks and our lovely waiter, Khaled Al Shafei, kicked things off with the Grape Escape – a
mildly sweet mix featuring white grape juice, mint, kiwi, lemon, agave syrup and fruit ice cubes. It was a good match for our first dish, the Salmon Burrata Carpaccio. An edible work of art, it featured beetroot-cured salmon alongside creamy burrata and zesty grapefruit and radish. Ginger jelly added an exquisite depth, complemented by tangy yuzu dressing, while crispy rosemary melba toast provided the perfect crunch. If you're looking for a light starter with a sweet note, this is your go-to dish. The Marinated Melon Salad followed – a refreshing salad of melon ribbons and watermelon triangles, cucumber and hazelnuts.
The kiwi foam provided a lovely citrusy taste and small jalapeño slices were the perfect accompaniment to the salty grilled halloumi, giving a much-needed hint of chilli to break through the sweetness of the fruit. This was matched by the Dreamsicle Smoothie, another delicious drink made with oat milk. But what stole the show for me was the Beetroot Salad – a mix of pickled, marinated, honey-roasted and raw candied beetroot with pecan brittle, crisp lettuce and dollops of goat cheese cream. A gorgeous dish that looked as pretty as it tasted, the variety of beetroot and sweet potato brought a lovely earthiness, while the goat cheese cream provided just the right amount of subtle savouriness to the salad. But the absolute star was the topping –a beautifully glossy, transparent potato crisp (which we mistook for a sugar tuile at first), consisting of thin slices of beetroot and a variety of seeds, including pumpkin, sunflower and almonds –mildly flavoured but delightfully crunchy. This was accompanied by Dr. Greens, a healthy green drink of kale, celery and cucumber. Aurora’s signature Pear Barley Porridge came next. A hearty and warm breakfast dish, it featured creamy cardamom barley and purple poached pears filled with crème anglaise and garnished with date and pistachio purée. With flavours in unison and none overpowering the other, the dish is truly ‘grandma’s goodness’ in a bowl and a perfect depiction of how to elevate a simple favourite. A quick interlude of Baked Alaska Affogato brought espressodrenched vanilla ice cream topped with caramelised meringue. With a lovely marshmallow-like texture, it’s a great choice for someone with a sweet tooth.
Next up was, wait for it… Giant Churros Fries! Yes, you heard that right – these weren’t your regular cinnamon and sugar-coated doughy delights but something even better (at least for me, as I prefer savoury to sweet)! These were oversized churro fries topped with a mountain of parmesan and truffle – super moreish and another tick for Aurora’s ingenuity with flavours. After a fair amount of deliciously sweet dishes and drinks, including a rich, decadent signature Lotus drink, the savoury Lobster Croffle Benedict was a welcome recess for the palate and an absolute hit at the table. The crispy croffle – a crossover between a croissant and waffle – provided the ideal base for the succulent chipotle lobster and poached egg. The chimichurri hollandaise foam, meanwhile, added a zesty flair and the crispy fried onions and jalapeños elevated this dish to a truly indulgent experience.
Just when we thought we couldn’t fit in another bite, two stunning desserts landed on the table. The Brownie Pistachio Kunafa, my personal favourite, paired traditional kunafa with two slabs of brownie and a generous layer of chocolate ganache – a genius creation that ticked all the boxes in terms of flavour and texture.
The Mango Graham was lighter – cream cheese and graham crackers layered as a set pudding and topped with ripe mango. A cool, simple and refreshing dish.
Aurora by Brunch & Cake delivers what it sets out to do: familiar food elevated in thoughtful, often surprising ways. The menu strikes a balance between comfort and creativity and our meal lingered in conversation long after the last plate was cleared. Whether it’s a laid-back lunch or something a little more special, Aurora offers an experience that feels both relaxed and refined. ✤

Liz O’Reilly took a trip to Andalusia to visit an outstanding property and share amazing adventures.
When I think of Malaga, in the heart of Spain's Andalusia region, I automatically think of golf. After all, the municipality is home to more than 60 courses. However, a visit to Anantara Villa Padierna Palace
Benahavís Marbella Resort was the ideal opportunity to discover that this area has so much more to offer.
After an easy flight via Istanbul, we were met at Malaga Airport and swiftly transported to the hotel in a comfortable, air-conditioned people carrier. Driving up to the property, which is indeed surrounded by rolling, manicured greens (Flamingos Golf is the centrepiece but the resort actually commands 54 holes from its prime position as the hub of three courses), it would be easy to imagine this imposing edifice as an ancient palace.
Inside, a soaring, glass-roofed atrium surrounded by tiers of rooms behind Moorish-style arches, an abundance of water features, artworks and classical statuary combine to enhance this impression.
In fact, this resort, which is almost part museum, houses a collection of more than 1,200 works of art spread throughout the spa, gardens, lounges and guest rooms. Highlights include pieces of Greco-Roman sculpture, works from the Iberian period, noble coats of arms and a selection of extraordinary period-spanning canvases signed by prominent artists, not to mention an imposing Roman amphitheatre. So, it’s surprising to discover that this modern-day palace is, in fact, less than 25 years old and was purpose built to serve the vision of its owner and as a tribute to his wife.
Walking through the doors, the first thing I noticed was the fabulous scent of fresh flowers, as gorgeous spring floral arrangements took centre stage in the expansive lobby area. Friendly and helpful staff welcomed us and, after a brief and efficient check in, I was quickly headed to my room. My super comfortable accommodation was both spacious and gracious. Sepia toned, toile de jouy-style wallpaper dotted with whimsical prints in golden frames gave an air of classical luxury. The large bed, in its pristine white linens, faced a cosy seating area with sofa and chair, while a handy desk provided plenty of workspace.
A walk-through dressing area abutted the bathroom, which was clad in marble, picking up the tones of the wallpaper, and boasted both a powerful shower and a separate and very appealing tub. A generous selection of amenities from Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle made me feel both welcomed and pampered.
I spent a few minutes taking in the gorgeous view of those endless rolling greens from my window before heading to lunch at La Loggia, which boasts a farmers’ market-style concept with bright baskets of local fruits and vegetables that you can choose to have included in your meal. We sat on the sun-soaked terrace and enjoyed an exceptional selection of black-skinned tomatoes, visually striking and perfect with a sprinkle of coarse salt,
accompanied by rich, creamy cheese and the wonderful Malagan speciality of gazpacho with juicy prawns. A selection of desserts had us all exclaiming aloud.
La Logia is just one of this fabulous property’s dining venues, which also include, among others, 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant, Irene’s Health Kitchen, where Chef Irene Hernández serves up a menu of healthy and detoxifying dishes, and the recently added Olà Beirut, where you’ll find classic Middle Eastern flavours – a touch of home for us.
On our first evening, we were treated to a sublime experience at La Veranda, the resort’s iconic dining venue which presents a combination of heritage local dishes and favourites from the last 20 years, all curated under the watchful eye of Head Chef José Carlos Delgado Serrano. We began with a mezze selection from Olà Beirut which, to my delight, included some of the best Fattoush I’ve come across. The amuse bouche was savoury beetroot macarons, something I’ve never tried before and an absolute hit with an earthy deep pink shell encasing a tart cheesy filling. The rest of the meal was equally innovative and impressive with wild sea bass loin perfectly complemented by pea puree and caviar beurre blanc and, my personal favourite, the dessert of pistachio crème brûlée with orange blossom ice cream. Simply outstanding.
One of Anatara’s great strengths is the group’s ability to offer guests unique experiences at each of its properties. In
terms of dining, they saved the best for last with Designer Dining by Anantara, an incredible feast on our final night.
In a gorgeously decorated private dining room, we were served a selection of dishes inspired by one of Malaga’s most famous sons, Pablo Picasso.
With a menu printed on a stylised paint palette, our hosts informed us that the dishes, including Marenga style clams, Ajoblanco with almonds and tuna with onion, were known to be some of the artist’s favourites, according to information from the Picasso Foundation – this was no selection plucked from thin air – and every mouthful offered a taste of tradition.
Entertainment came from a talented flamenco duo of guitarist and dancer, the cherry on the cake being the opportunity to join in with the dancing. An absolutely perfect way to showcase the very best of local Malagan heritage that ensured we headed home with the happiest of memories.
On the subject of Anantara’s experiential offerings, we spent a memorable day sampling some of the premium options available in the region, starting with a visit to LA Almazara, an Andalusian olive farm where we enjoyed a guided tour. We learnt about the different types of trees and growing procedures before visiting the pressing machinery in a purpose-built, one-of-a-kind, boutique olive mill housed in a stunning building, designed by Philippe Starck to resemble one of the region’s iconic bulls.
A guided tasting gave us the chance to snap up some of this premium golden liquid to take home before we headed to our next stop. The Spanish Horse Experience allowed us to get up close to native breeds in a huge area of natural
habitat that’s been declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve. We also saw some of the show horses going through their training and even visited the stables where, I have to admit, I fell a little bit in love with a certain spikey maned young chap – sadly, they wouldn’t let me take him home!
After a tour round the reserve, we headed to neighbouring Ronda, one of Andalusia’s most iconic towns which is built around a deep gorge. The scenery here is absolutely stunning and, following another exceptional meal, we took great delight in strolling the winding streets, visiting pretty shops and a fascinating museum and then staring into the vertiginous gorge as we crossed the bridge which divides the town’s newer and older sides.
It wouldn’t be Anantara without a trip to the spa and the one at Villa Padierna is really quite something. One of the largest in Europe, it features more than 2,000sq/m of Roman and Turkish baths with 13 treatment rooms and a salon. Gentle tones of cream and golden hued marble make for an atmosphere of relaxation and subdued opulence, while brands such as Valmont, Biologique, Esthederm, Comfort Zone, Piroche and Oribe add to the feeling of exclusivity. I visited the aromatic spa circuit, the only one of its kind on the Costa del Sol, which consists of a series of steam rooms – salt, rose and Hammam – as well as a rosescented bath and ice facilities. I must admit I was not keen on the idea of this – I’m really not a big fan of steam therapy. But I’m always keen to try a new experience and the salt option, in which you rub liberal amounts of coarse salt onto steam heated skin, left my skin feeling absolutely amazing. I’m now a firm believer and a total convert.
In the capable hands of therapist Victoria, I enjoyed a gentle aromatherapy massage with almond oil and sweet orange followed by time in the relaxation room with lemon and ginger tea beside a gentle fountain looking onto the indoor pool. All too soon it was time to wish ‘adiós’ to this amazing property and the new friends we had made there. From the impeccable accommodation to the friendly and efficient staff and from the delectable dining to the wonderful experiences laid on for us, we truly couldn’t have asked for more. We left, vowing to return and maybe next time, we’ll even get in a round of golf. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.ANANTARA.COM/EN/VILLA-PADIERNAMARBELLA FOR MORE INFORMATION.

From bassist to self-taught photographer, Bahraini artist Ishaq Madan has an eye for capturing moments in time and telling unique stories through his lens. In an exclusive interview, Apple Sharma caught up with the man behind the camera to discover what makes him click!
FACT: What inspired you to take up photography as a profession? How was your journey as a self-taught artist?
IM: The seed was sown when I was a child, as I used to take photos during summer holidays, sometimes tinkering and, ironically, dismantling cameras. However, I delved into other interests, such as music and, for a short while, I was a bassist in a death metal band, where we had the opportunity to play live at Bahrain International Circuit and Amwaj Marina. Eventually, years later, during the rise of phone photography and its accessibility, I developed a passion for photography, as it gave me an opportunity to go to places I would have never pushed myself to go or even meet people I wouldn't have otherwise. In this day and age, a lot can be learnt from the University of YouTube and, when it comes to photography, the best way to learn is to simply go outside and play. All in all, I let my curiosity guide my creativity, allowing me to experience and learn different things. Without such a drive, I do not think I would be where I currently am.
FACT: Your work mainly focusses on street and conceptual photography. What keeps you coming back to these themes?
IM: A thin line between both, as they can seamlessly convey the human condition and experience that’s true to reality. To a degree it is also therapeutic, specifically street photography, as it allows me to take a step back and observe
the world, allowing me to appreciate the mundane and my existence in this temporary plane. I recently established a photography group with some good friends, Khurram Salman and Fadhel Yousifi, called The GR Club (officially Ricoh GR Middle East), with the intention to share our love for street photography and bring together a community because we often hear a lot of photographers tend to find it challenging shooting street photography, as it takes confidence to do so. What's also special about the GR club is that it solely focusses on a specific inconspicuous camera called the Ricoh GR.
FACT: As Photographer-in-Residence at Al Riwaq Art Space, you’re exploring collages. Has this influenced your photography and are there any exciting new projects in the making?
IM: During my residency at Al Riwaq, I was exposed to many new concepts, as curator William Wells had a way of engaging your critical thought, allowing you to open a dialogue within yourself. More so, exploring collages has inspired me to look into creating more tangible work; I recently launched a zine titled +973 at the Kingdom of Bahrain pavilion’s gift shop [at Expo 2025 Osaka], which serves as a precursor or teaser to a photobook I’m working on.
FACT: You had your photo (Shabab Al Mustaqbel, 2022) featured by The Museum of Modern Art in a New York
subway. What did that moment mean to you, both personally and as a Bahraini artist?
IM: I felt a deep sense of pride as it parallels one of my principles in photography, and that is to create with intention to show the world our little island and break typical stereotypes about the Gulf. I hope to use my photography as a way to rewrite misconceptions in the minds and hearts of people.
FACT: You’ve mentioned wanting to put Bahrain on the map through your work. What stories are you most keen to share?
IM: Stories I am keen on revolve around our lifestyle and the various communities in our melting pot of an island. There's a rich tapestry of experiences to tap into that can be relayed through imagery, as different villages beyond Manama and Muharraq also have their own vivid stories to tell.
FACT: From fashion shoots for high-end brands to cool and quirky local projects, what do you enjoy doing more and which one has been the most fun so far?
IM: I strongly believe in not putting yourself in a box. Why limit yourself when you can experience different things? I tend to enjoy most types of photography, as it engages my imagination and curiosity to create. However, I’d say I gravitate towards street photography because the world becomes your playground for creativity.
FACT: You were recently in Osaka for the inauguration of Bahrain's national pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka. Can you tell us about your involvement in the project?
IM: It was a fun and beautiful commission, where my brother and I were part of Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities’ media team. We were tasked to document the Kingdom of Bahrain pavilion, designed by architect Linah Ghotmeh, and create content that would intrigue viewers.
Seeing how the Japanese visitors engaged with our pavilion was amazing, as their curiosity allowed us to share what our beautiful island has to offer through culture and heritage. The experience was heartwarming – it was something greater in the sense we were all working together towards one goal of sharing our island with the world. ✤

FACT: What’s the most unexpected place your camera has taken you?
IM: Iceland, most definitely. An impromptu trip with my friend, Mustafa Al-Bastaki, it was an adventure of a lifetime. I don’t think I would’ve done that if I didn’t have a passion for photography.
FACT: If you could photograph anyone (dead or alive) in any setting, who would it be and where?
IM: I’m a big Arsenal fan, going all the way back to 1999. I’d say Arsene Wenger at Highbury, London.
FACT: What’s a photo by someone else you wish you had taken?
IM: Lewis Hamilton outside Enzo Ferrari's home. What a photo that is! So powerful and impactful.
FACT: What’s your favourite time of the day to shoot?
IM: Lately, I have enjoyed the sweet golden hour; it’s simply rich with character as shadows dance around with sunlight.

Need to Know:
G20 introduces the novel concept of a female US President with a military background. Although a theme that has been explored before in Hollywood, this time around Viola Davis, who is also a co-producer, probably had a desire to make a statement with this film.
Creators: Viola Davies, Andrew Lazar, Julius Tennon
Director: Patricia Riggin
Cast: Viola Davis, Anthony Anderson, Ramon Ridriguez, Marsai Martin and Angela Basset.
For starters, it has a magnificent setting during a G20 summit in Cape Town. It’s thoroughly entertaining, with ample thrill and drama, as a well-trained group of mercenaries plot to hijack the venue. And in true Hollywood style, the US president (Danielle Sutton), played by Viola Davis, a former marine, mother, wife and now leader of the free World, steps up and comes to the rescue. For many of those who have seen Viola in Woman King, she has a formidable screen presence.
It’s not easy to impress action-thriller movie fans but G20 absolutely delivers. From high stakes action scenes to intense and gripping sequences, it’s an adrenaline-fuelled ride from start to finish.
Viola hits the mark as a feisty US president, as she uses her governing and military experience to defend her family, fellow leaders and the world (think Air Force One).
So, if you’re in the mood for a Die Hard- or White House Down-style action-thriller, then G20 is absolutely worth your time and will keep you at the edge of your seat.
By Gigi Perez
Gigi Perez first went viral on TikTok for her hit single Sailor Song in 2024, which now opens her debut album, drawing in listeners with a familiar sound. The singer’s raw lyricism over a stripped back acoustic sound brings a fresh perspective, evident in Sleeping , where repeated lyrics evoke visceral emotion. Nothing, Absolutely stands out with the singer’s haunting voice overlayed on a soothing instrumental backdrop before it softens to a lull in the last few minutes. Moving to Chemistr y, the only explicitly marked track takes a louder turn, exploring themes of electric yearning and concealment. The complete opposite, Survivor’s Guilt is a one hour 20-minute instrumental track with a single yet powerful line: “I, I would be, at all.”
While Fable was released prior to the album, it makes for an intriguing listen within the context of At The Beach, In Every Life. Finally, Please Be Rude and title track At The Beach, In Every Life revert back to a laid-back, reverential sound like Sailor Song , although much less melancholy.
Ultimately, the album sounds like a parent rocking their child to sleep through a storm or two star-crossed lovers yielding to their fate – gut wrenching yet tender. Gigi Perez has only just begun her musical journey but has already made waves, revealing just a glimpse of the untapped potential she has yet to fully explore.
By Bon Iver
SABLE, fABLE is Bon Iver’s fifth album, which is split into two parts: SABLE and fABLE . The album opens with a 12 second drone that acts as a prelude. THINGS BEHIND THINGS BEHIND THINGS , the next track, is vulnerable and the lyrical repetition evokes feelings of nervousness and desperation.
S P E Y S I D E is a rawer, strippeddown acoustic sound with visceral imagery woven into the lyrics. The long musical interludes hold space for appreciation and reflection. AWARDS SEASON conveys the melancholia that accompanies feelings of acceptance when a relationship has faded. The atmospheric switch when Short Story begins is immediate. The cinematic music is emotional, as it sounds hopeful, bringing the reader out of SABLE ’s depressive shadow. Everything Is Peaceful Love and Day One are catchy tunes over an addictive beat, the latter featuring Dijon and Flock of Dimes. If Only I Could Wait stands out with a feature from Danielle Haim. The track blends Danielle’s unique sound with Bon Iver’s in an exhilarating collaboration. The album closes with Au Revoir , having moved out of SABLE ’s depressive shadow and ending on a positive note, leaving the listener with feelings of clarity and hope.

Big Dumb Eyes
By Nate Bargatze
The first book from outstanding standup man Nate Bargatze – one-time genius, before he hit his head on a rock and "my skull got, like, dented or something”. In it he brings his inimitable viewpoint to some great stories, such as tales of Old Blue, his first car, a clunky stick-shift Mazda, and the trials of travelling as a Southerner – apparently Northerners wonder if he believes in dinosaurs. Add in the story of his first apartment, shared with and bitten by rats, and numerous debates with his wife on subjects from diet to shopping, and you know you’re in for a fun ride.
Some people can’t live without their phones, but one university student proved it literally. A 27-year-old Chinese national living in Japan was rescued from Mount Fuji, not once, but twice in four days. His first dramatic airlift should have been enough. But no, he returned days later to fetch the phone he’d left behind mid-rescue. Unsurprisingly, things didn’t go well
with altitude sickness at over 3,000 metres. Cue rescue number two. Officials were less than thrilled. Offseason climbs are discouraged for a reason; Mount Fuji’s steep, snowcovered trails are no joke. Whether the phone was ever found remains unclear. What is clear: this guy may be more committed to data recovery than most IT departments. Let’s just hope next time he opts for cloud backup.
A Michigan teen’s pettiness made him a criminal when he emailed a fake bomb threat to stop his girlfriend from cruising to Jamaica without him. As the Carnival Sunrise sailed out of Miami, an anonymous message landed: “Hey, I think someone might have a bomb on your sunrise cruise ship.” Chaos ensued. Authorities searched more than 1,000 rooms and both US and Jamaican coast guards got involved. Eventually, the
hoax was traced to 19-year-old Joshua Darrell Lowe II. His motive? Heartbreak and pet-sitting duty. Left behind with the animals while his girlfriend’s family sipped piña coladas, he decided to sink their fun (pun intended). The FBI wasn’t impressed. Though he faced up to five years, a judge reduced it to eight months. If you’re mad about being left behind, maybe try booking your own ticket?
If the idea of owning a designer handbag without selling a kidney sounds appealing, 2025 may be your moment. Thanks to Trump-era tariffs and the ongoing diplomatic tango between the US and China, luxury shopping has taken a fascinating turn. With import costs soaring, Western shoppers are skipping the boutiques and heading straight to Chinese platforms that are offering
what appear to be high-end goods at sceptically low prices. Handbags, watches and shoes with suspiciously familiar logos, all for less than a weekend brunch. It’s all part of a wider trend, where Chinese manufacturers have taken to TikTok to flaunt their wares in slick videos of gloved hands, studio lighting and the works. Of course, whether that ‘Chanel’ is actually 'Channel' is for you to find out.
