The French Embassy in Bahrain announced the winner of its latest photography competition, presenting top honours to a Bahraini designer who envisioned a futuristic image of cooperation between the two nations using artificial intelligence (AI).
In its latest creative initiative, the French Embassy in Bahrain recently announced the winner of its photography competition, themed Bahrain with a French Touch. Moosa Silwadi, a Bahraini artist, architect and designer, emerged victorious for his AI-enhanced image that reimagines FrancoBahraini ties through a futuristic lens. His winning artwork will now be featured on the embassy’s official greeting card for 2025–2026.
Moosa’s concept, created using the French AI tool, Sezam (sezam.ai), centred around the sea – a symbol of trade and cultural exchange between the two nations. He combined digital photography and AI-generated visuals to create what he describes as “blending both worlds into a single, cohesive composition that reflects the full depth of my vision.
“For this competition, I followed my passion for science fiction and futuristic themes,” he said. “It took several attempts before I captured the perfect shot. The final step was to merge the AIgenerated imagery with the digital photograph.”
Out of 15 entries, five finalists were shortlisted before Moosa’s piece was selected. The Embassy hosted a gathering at the French Residence to honour his work, where Ambassador HE Eric Giraud-Telme presented him with a signed and framed print of the artwork.
Speaking about the initiative, the Ambassador said: “The idea behind the contest was to encourage participants to express their creativity by illustrating how Franco-Bahraini cooperation could be represented through the use of artificial intelligence. AI
is a priority for France – a commitment reflected in the AI Action Summit held in Paris earlier this year. It will also be the theme of our upcoming 14th of July celebration.
“Moosa stood out by presenting a highly futuristic image that not only showcases the potential of AI but also projects us into a shared future shaped by innovation.”
He added that the project ties into the embassy’s wider engagement with local communities in Bahrain, including Amana Creative, Green Youth Hackathon and the upcoming Youth City Festival this summer, as well as the Digital November initiative later this year. Both upcoming events will feature workshops led by French experts exploring AI’s role in learning, innovation and artistic expression.
“These initiatives serve two main purposes: First, they aim to provide visibility, promotion and development opportunities for Bahraini youth. Second, they help foster a meaningful dialogue between France and Bahrain on global challenges and shared priorities,” he said.
The Ambassador believes such cultural initiatives will help strengthen the relationship between the two nations by reinforcing bilateral collaboration and deepening mutual understanding. ✤
Good news for race fans, as Formula 1 returns to Bahrain in 2026, with the Bahrain International Circuit opening access to priority tickets.
Formula 1 and the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile), the governing body for world motorsport, have announced the official 2026 race calendar, with Bahrain confirmed to host the fourth round of the season. The Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2026 will take place from April 10 to 12 at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.
Bahrain once again retains its April slot, following races in Australia from March 6 to 8, China from March 13 to 15 and Japan from March 27 to 29.
With 2025 achieving another sellout at BIC, tickets for next year’s race are expected to be as in-demand as ever. In response, BIC will introduce a priority ticket access window for fans who want to ensure they can get the best seats available. Those interested can visit www.bahraingp.com to register their details and will be the first to access tickets,
ahead of their official launch, which will be announced in due course.
The 2026 season will again feature 24 races. Madrid is the newest addition to the calendar and will host its debut Grand Prix from September 11 to 13. Following Bahrain’s race, the action will move to Saudi Arabia, with the Jeddah race scheduled from April 17 to 19. The season will then conclude in Abu Dhabi from December 4 to 6.
Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to call first dibs on next year’s tickets. ✤
Al Riwaq Art Space opens its latest group exhibition, Data / Humans, bringing together local and international artists to explore what it means to be human in an increasingly digitised world.
Al Riwaq Art Space is hosting a new group exhibition titled Data / Humans, which runs until September 3. The show brings together local, regional and international artists to reflect on our digitally saturated world and how the boundaries between lived experience and online representation continue to dissolve – at times almost ceasing to exist.
Working across traditional and digital painting, video, photography, mixed media and installation – some created, others generated – the artists critically examine how data is interpreted and applied and what that means for our collective future. Each artist offers a distinct perspective while resonating with shared concerns. Together, they explore how data shapes identity, influences consciousness and affects our capacity to connect, choose and resist. The exhibition invites reflection on our evolving relationship with technology as it intersects with power, consent and the human condition. By confronting the systems that
shape how we think and feel, it opens space to raise questions: What does it mean to be conscious, to choose and to connect in a world that rarely allows us to pause?
Data / Humans continues Al Riwaq’s commitment to traditional disciplines, while also supporting new, experimental media. Since opening its doors in 1998, the gallery has grown into a key part of Bahrain’s contemporary art scene. Alongside supporting both emerging and established artists through exhibitions, residencies and educational programmes, Al Riwaq has established partnerships and networks with international institutions and creative practitioners.
The exhibition is open Saturday to Thursday, from 10am to 8pm in House 1 and 2. ✤

The love for all things arts and culture runs deep in Bahrain, with our little island bursting at the seams with exceptional talent. From photography, painting and street art to breakdancing, we’ve rounded up a small selection of artists from various fields, celebrating the burgeoning local scene. Take a look and see what floats their boat and inspires them to keep creating!
Aref Mohammed, also known as Ayfu, is an artist who creates to heal, connect and set souls free. His journey began in childhood – his passion sparked by watching his father draw. In 2009, he fell in love with graffiti after witnessing the raw energy of hip-hop culture. That was the moment he realised art is movement, emotion, rebellion and truth.
What inspires your artwork or creative process?
My art is inspired by personal healing, emotional release and the desire to connect with others. I’m drawn to movement, street culture and contrast, especially between light and darkness. Creating helps me reconnect with myself and turn pain into something powerful and positive for others to feel.
How would you describe your style or approach to art?
My style blends spray paint, airbrush and graffiti with clean structure. I often use blue tones to express emotion and depth. My approach is intuitive and emotional – I paint based on what I’m feeling and living through. I love mixing styles, but I always aim for clarity, impact and meaningful expression.
Which local and international artists do you admire?
Locally, I’m inspired by street artists who tell honest stories – those who mix tradition with modern expression and aren’t afraid to break norms. Internationally, I look up to Banksy for his fearless messages, Pablo Picasso for his unique style, Helio Bray for his bold, colourful murals and Jean-Michel Basquiat for his raw emotion. Any artist who creates from truth, not trends, inspires me.

A passionate photographer based in Bahrain, Basma Alhashimi specialises in landscape, cityscape and time-lapse photography. Her work captures the beauty of fleeting moments, blending patience with creativity. Each frame reflects her deep connection to nature and urban life, with an annual time-lapse project showcasing her evolving artistic journey.
What inspires the moments or subjects you choose to capture?
I’m always chasing quiet moments that carry weight. It’s that mix of timing, light and place that draws me in. I try to show Bahrain not just as it is but as it feels – familiar, proud and quietly beautiful. Whether it’s the stillness of a landscape, the rhythm of a city or the slow unfolding of a time-lapse, I want each frame to hold something timeless, without needing a caption.
How would you describe your style or approach to photography?
I move with the rhythm of the scene. Sometimes that means hours of stillness – watching light shift, clouds sweep past or the moon edge into place. I don’t like to force a shot; I like to feel it unfold. My process is quiet, patient and rooted in observation. I lean into simplicity – clean compositions, natural light, honest tones.
Which local and international artists do you admire?
A workshop with Kuwaiti photographer Mohammed Alsultan made me realise that landscape and cityscape photography was my true path. Talks by American photographer Elia Locardi and Lebanese-born Dany Eid helped deepen my technical understanding, while Norwegian Morten Rustad inspired me to explore time-lapse photography.

CAGLA AKPINAR
Artist | Muralist
Cagla Akpinar, also known as Wicked Rose, is a multidisciplinary artist from Türkiye, based in Bahrain. A Bilkent University Fine Arts graduate, she creates vibrant mixed-media works exploring identity and emotion. Influenced by global experiences, her dynamic style blends surrealism and symbolism with culturally rich, personal visual storytelling.
What inspires your artwork or creative process?
My art is inspired by the exploration of identity, emotion and perception. I often use self-portraiture to express inner complexity. Influenced by solitude, philosophy and life abroad, my creative process reflects a search for meaning and existence. For me, art isn’t about finding myself – it’s about creating myself.
How would you describe your style or approach to art?
Blending neo-surrealism and magic realism, my approach is intuitive and ever-evolving. I create vibrant portraits and figures using mixed media, combining surreal, semi-realistic and pop elements. I embrace spontaneity over repetition, often layering techniques like collage and incorporating symbolic imagery or text. My work is fluid, personal and open-ended – a visual journey through identity and experience.
Which local and international artists do you admire?
I’m truly captivated by Thajba Najeeb’s paintings. A BahrainiPakistani artist and former architect, she tells powerful stories through vibrant colours and emotionally rich compositions, often infused with architectural elements. One of my favourite international artists is Nadine Tralala, a German figurative oil painter whose blend of classical technique and modern surrealism creates deeply poetic, dreamlike worlds that resonate closely with me.

Artist | Musician | Dancer
Abdulla Husain, also known as DUST, is a Bahraini artist from Muharraq. He grew up loving football but transitioned to the arts around 2001 after seeing kids dancing at a local park. From there, he immersed himself in hip-hop culture, with dance and breaking as his entry point and music the main influence. In 2008, he established the Red Ants Army – an authentic hip-hop movement – and is also a DJ and music producer.
What inspires you as a dancer/choreographer and the music you create?
Dance is the language I chose to speak with, and expressing that musically is the highest connection in life. I’m still learning and will always be a student of the culture.
How would you describe your dance style and your sound or approach to music-making?
My style is very raw and unpredictable in every form I practice. It’s full of human mistakes, and I never want it to be perfect.
Which local and international artists do you admire?
Growing up in an environment full of doubt and mockery, where following dreams was considered a waste of time – I say this with love – I don’t admire individuals. I’m inspired by the art itself, the lifestyle and the messages. As a young man, I looked up to Bruce Lee and his philosophy of life changed how I presented myself. Also, artists like J Dilla had a lot to do with how I make music, dance and paint.

Eman Haddad is a Bahraini singer-songwriter known for her soft folk-pop sound. Raised in a family that embraced the arts, she began experimenting with music early and later studied Music Psychology and English Literature in the UK. Her expressive performances have resonated widely, most notably when she opened for Jason Derulo during Bahrain’s Spring of Culture festival in 2019.
What inspires the music you create or perform?
I feel things deeply, and I think that comes through in the way I perform. I gravitate toward songs that carry emotion – whether longing, joy or nostalgia – and I try to honour them with vulnerability. My music is my way of connecting with those who feel the world deeply too.
How would you describe your sound or approach to music-making?
I mostly perform acoustic covers in a folk-pop style and write lyrics of my own - originals I hope to share very soon. I want my music to offer a space where people can feel something real.
Which local and international artists do you admire?
I’m infinitely grateful to be part of Bahrain’s music scene. Ala Ghawas and my father have deeply influenced my path as an artist, but the list is long and the local talent around me constantly moves me. Internationally, Joni Mitchell has shaped the way I think about music, writing and performance.

Enas Sistani is a Bahraini street and conceptual photographer known for using her art to inspire change. Her culturally rich, socially themed work has been exhibited globally, including by MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art, New York) and CNN. She received an honourable mention in the International Photography Awards 2022, among other accolades.
What inspires the moments or subjects you choose to capture? It depends on the type of photography I’m doing. With conceptual work, I’m usually inspired by current events, social issues or topics that need more attention. I tend to gravitate toward things people shy away from. Street photography is a different story –less planned, more intuitive. It’s about slowing down and tuning into what most people miss in the rush of everyday life.
How would you describe your style or approach to photography?
I don’t have a single style, and that’s intentional. My approach keeps evolving – photos I took yesterday might feel completely different from those I take today. I let the subject lead the way. Some images come out dreamy and hazy because that’s the emotion I want to capture. Others are cinematic, crisp or muted. I use colour, light and editing to reflect what I’m feeling in the moment.
Which local and international artists do you admire?
Locally, Ishaq Madan and Mustafa Bastaki for street photography, Sara Sami for astrophotography and Ali Al Shehabi for artistic shoots. Internationally, I admire Mihaela Noroc for travel portraits and Hamza Lafrouji and Hassan Hajjaj for editorial work.

Artist
Hussain Ali Alnoaimi is a Bahraini artist known for his vibrant, textured works on recycled and driftwood surfaces. His art reflects a deep connection to Bahrain’s maritime history and musical heritage, while exploring the fusion of global music cultures. As the founder of Sound of Color, an eco-conscious initiative, he believes that colour is a secret language and sound a form of communication. Hussain transforms discarded materials into expressive artworks and eco-friendly decor with cultural meaning.
What inspires your artwork or creative process?
I am inspired by people deeply connected to their craft, especially those who dedicate their lives to it and find joy in the process. My work draws from Bahrain’s maritime heritage and traditional music, while embracing global influences. I use bold colours and textured recycled wood to express rhythm, memory and identity.
How would you describe your style or approach to art?

Colour plays a central role, not only visually but symbolically. My approach blends sustainability with cultural memory, creating work that feels both personal and collective.

One of Bahrain's most popular pop/rock bands, Likwid is known for its superb musicianship, performing at sold-out venues. The members – Ahmed "AQ" Alqasim (bass, lead vocal), Khalid Alshamlan (piano, keyboards, backing vocals), Ahmed Abdulaziz (guitar, backing vocals) and Abdulrahman Malallah (drums, percussion) – have played together for over 20 years under various formations. An entertaining band that doesn’t believe in genres, Likwid’s repertoire spans rock, smooth jazz, blues, reggae, funk and Latin.
What inspires the music you create or perform?
Inspiration can come from two completely different places. One, when we write songs based on our personal experiences and the second when we compose the music and collaborate with friends to write the lyrics, leading to some great results. We also love playing covers but never like the originals – we add our own unique touch.
How would you describe your sound or approach to music-making?
We love challenging ourselves at all times. We rarely go for the straightforward approach of writing or playing songs that are too simple (three or four chords looping the entire song). We always push ourselves to do more with our music, to make it stand out and bring out our musicianship.
Which local and international artists do you admire?
We’ve always admired the Bahraini group, Brothers Band. We grew up listening to their songs and playing them. What made them appealing was that most songs were sung in the Bahraini dialect, while the music was western influenced, using the same instruments that we play. Internationally, we love Sting, Stevie Wonder, Santana, Bob Marley & The Wailers and Pink Floyd.

MUBARAK SALMEEN
Dancer | Choreographer
Mubarak Salmeen, also known as B-boy Brookie Funk, is a Bahraini hip-hop dancer, choreographer, event organiser and dance instructor with 15 years of breaking experience. Founder of Fresh Minds Jam, he has represented the Red Ants Army crew of local dancers around the world, recently winning Grand Style 2 in Dubai. How would you describe your style or approach to dance?
Breaking funky style (hip-hop). I express my art through free movement, telling my story through dance and rhythm – through mind, body and soul. I want to express stories that will inspire and make an impact on the next generation to follow their hearts and ambitions.

A Bahraini artist with a degree in business administration, Rabab Rajab is known for artwork that captures Bahraini culture and traditions. She creates paintings using acrylics and mixed media on canvas or wooden boards.
What inspires your artwork or creative process?
My inspiration comes mainly from Bahraini traditional clothing, Thobe Al Nashel, and Bahraini gold. I also get ideas from historic places, listening to folklore stories, seeing the work of other cultural artists and attending Bahraini weddings, where women still practice traditional dances – portrayed in many of my artworks.
How would you describe your style or approach to art?
The goal in all my art is to reflect Bahrain’s rich culture and heritage and showcase how women have played a huge role in keeping these traditions alive through the decades. My style balances cultural and modern art. Some pieces focus on traditional Bahraini clothing with its beautiful gold details, excluding facial features, while others portray women with symbols reflecting local culture, like Bahraini pearls or fishing.
Which local or international artists do you admire?
I follow many local artists – each inspires me in a different way. We have so many creative minds in Bahrain. Internationally, I truly admire Esraa Zidan, Mohamed Rabie and Hafida Zizi – their lively artworks are very unique, eye catching and filled with colours.

The Relocators are a dynamic indie trio from Bahrain, made up of Faisal Amin, Jojo Canlas and Ali Alqaseer. Formed in 2012, the band blends indie, alternative, blues and funk into a sound rooted in musical heritage and raw energy. Known for their electrifying live shows and infectious hooks, they’ve performed across the Middle East and Europe. With tracks like Part of Me and Reasons , they continue to evolve, creating music that inspires movement, nostalgia and a deep connection with their audience. They’re currently gearing up to release exciting new material.
What inspires the music you create or perform?
Human beings and the human connection are interesting. When we write songs, we observe and simplify. That simplification of our concepts makes the songs more relatable.
How would you describe your sound or approach to music-making?
The ideas almost always begin with a guitar and vocal line. If it's interesting, we'll start building from there. A lot of musical decisions happen during the recording process with the help of our friend, recording and mixing engineer, Abdulla Jamal (Soundman Studio).
Which local and international artists do you admire?
We love The Beatles, Ray Charles, Elvis but we’ve been exploring subgenres like alternative, hard rock, pop rock and blues. Locally, we admire the behind-the-scenes workhorses who help our industry evolve – our friend Abdurahman Rashid is a great example. We’ve also been listening to some Osiris during rehearsals.

Rapper | Dancer
Vybhav Dath is a multifaceted artist – rapper, poet, dancer, model, creative visionary and one of the directors of Aura Arts Centre. A representative of hip-hop culture through rap, dance and fashion, he also expresses funk through movement. His dance style blends popping, boogaloo, tutting, waving, animation and hip-hop. He’s a GCC all-style champion, performer, judge and more.
What inspires you as an artist?
Everything around me – realising we’re small beings in this vast, constantly moving realm. When you simply look up, look around, there’s always something new to notice or understand. Paying attention to your inner world also sharpens how you see things externally. In the end, inspiration is everywhere – it’s just about being open to it.
How would you describe your style or approach to your craft?
I’m inspired by a lot of things daily, but I don’t rely on inspiration to create. Whether I feel it or not, I show up and do the work – that’s where the craftsman in me comes in. I’m also constantly researching – looking into the greats, the roots of what I do and the deeper messages behind it all. I don’t copy others. Taking inspiration is fine, but I try to empty myself of what I already know, so I can create from something more instinctive – not just what I’ve seen or learnt.
Which local and international artists do you admire?
I often admire poetic passages from the Quran, Bible and Bhagavad Gita. Some of my favourite international artists are Aesop Rock, Eminem, Black Thought, Kendrick Lamar, DMX and Saul Williams. Local artists include Chemi, Dusty, Sammy, my brother Vyshnav Dath, Faroos and many more.

YAD Oud is a masked Bahraini artist known for oud covers of Arabic classics that connect with listeners worldwide. With millions of streams on YouTube and Spotify, his fresh, heartfelt interpretations bridge cultures and invite global audiences to experience the depth of Arabic musical heritage.
What inspires the music you create or perform?
I’m inspired by a mix of emotions and tradition. Feelings like nostalgia, wonder or sadness often shape what I play. I also draw from Arabic musical heritage, blending those emotions with melodies that connect across cultures and generations.
How would you describe your sound or approach to music-making?
My sound combines traditional Arabic oud techniques with arrangements shaped by emotion and modern listening styles. I focus on making music that’s authentic yet accessible, guided by what I feel when interpreting or reimagining classic pieces.
Which local and international artists do you admire?
Locally, one of my earliest influences was Mohammed Al Hasan and his fresh perspective on Arabic music. Internationally, Abadi Al Johar is the reason I picked up the oud – his playing moved me deeply. I also draw inspiration from Frank Ocean and Billie Eilish for their fearless approach to emotion, production and artistry beyond genre limits.

fact spent a day in the Porsche Panamera Manufacturer Edition, a luxury saloon that embodies craftsmanship in tactile form.
They say you can’t have it all but the 2025 Porsche Panamera Manufacturer Edition certainly comes close. Collecting the keys to this hand-finished, hyperpersonalised machine, we expected Porsche refinement. What we didn’t expect was for it to charm us like a charismatic villain in a Bond film. From the moment we stood in its presence, we knew this wasn’t going to be just a drive, it was going to be a mind-altering experience.
To call the Panamera handsome would be an understatement. In this Manufacturer Exclusive Edition, it’s more like haute couture on wheels. The SportDesign Package painted in stealthy black highgloss reshapes the fascia and adds a sharper, more aggressive attitude. The Exclusive Design taillights and tinted HD Matrix LED headlights keep things distinctively Porsche but with an edge that’s all about craftsmanship. From the model designation in black to the side window trims and door handle inlays painted in body colour, the detailing is meticulous and undeniably bespoke.
The 21-inch Panamera Exclusive Design wheels, painted in black with highly polished surfaces, are both aggressive and elegant, like a tailored suit with racing gloves. Paired with Exclusive Design taillights and silver sports exhaust tailpipes, this car looks ready to launch even while parked at valet.
Stepping inside, we were immediately greeted by a sensory hug of Barrique Club leather – soft, deep and unlike anything in the standard lineup. This isn’t just leather, it’s craftsmanship in tactile form.
The interior presented an effortless blend of German precision and Gulf-style luxury – rich, detailed and built to impress. Thanks to the carbon matt interior package, every surface we touched, from the leather wrapped GT sports steering wheel, to the illuminated door sill guards, felt deliberate and indulgent. Even the air vent surrounds have been thoughtfully upgraded. The overall cabin layout is driver-focussed, but not lacking character. To us, it felt more like a first-class cockpit, suited for everything from fast-track straights to downtown traffic. We loved the Porsche crest on the headrests, a small but powerful reminder of the marque’s DNA, sitting right behind our perfectly positioned heads. The adaptive sports front seats are 18-way adjustable and offer the kind of support that says, “Take the long way home”.
Whilst admiring the interior artistry, we noticed the Exclusive Edition model quietly flexing its tech muscles. The passenger display was a particular talking point, giving our designated co-pilot full command of media, navigation and much more. The true showstopper? The Burmester 3D High-End Surround Sound System that wrapped us in audio so immersive, it was like having our own private symphony on four wheels. It felt like we were listening to our favourite driving anthems for the first time. Of course, Porsche has equipped, as standard on all models, wireless smartphone integration, seamless connectivity, a
head-up display and a central display that feels more like a top-of-the-range tablet than a dashboard.
Now, let’s get down to business (Cue Tiësto).
Porsche has added a layer of focussed urgency to the Exclusive Edition’s drive, by including the Sports Chrome Package. It has paired this with Porsche Active Suspension Management and adaptive air suspension and, let us tell you, the power and precision are almost unbelievable!
We found the eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox as sharp as ever, responding with such finesse that we began to think it was reading our minds. Add the sports exhaust tailpipes into the equation and it sounds as fast as it feels, without ever being brash.
Despite revelling in the Panamera’s grand touring comfort, make no mistake, we found nothing soft about this car’s performance. It corners like it’s on rails and hit highway speeds with astonishing grace. Yet somehow, it never seemed to take any strain whatsoever. A truly otherworldly driving experience.
From the moment we stood in its presence, we knew this wasn’t going to be just a drive, it was going to be a mind-altering experience.”
Performance may be Porsche’s love language, but it also speaks fluent safety. Lane Change Assist, Surround View Active Parking Support and soft-close doors all come as standard, making city driving feel less like a chore and more like a mini privilege. More of a convenience than a safety feature is the 90-litre fuel tank that gives you range for days, even if those days include high-speed runs through open desert highways.
Now, don’t get us wrong, the standard 2025 Porsche Panamera is already a phenomenal car. With its sleek design, cutting-edge tech and signature Porsche performance, it easily holds its own in the upper echelons of the luxury saloon league. However, once you’ve experienced the Manufacturer Exclusive Edition, there’s simply no going back. It takes everything that’s great about the Panamera and elevates it into something far more personal, more indulgent and, frankly, more irresistible .✤

With an illustrious career spanning more than 25 years, the Chief Executive Officer of Automotive Companies (National Motor Company, Tasheelat Automotive Company and Tasheelat Car Leasing), talks about the Bahrain market, brand strategy and his first car.
With over two decades in the GCC automotive scene, what would you say sets this market apart from others?
The GCC market is unique in several ways, starting with its deep appreciation for automobiles, not just as a necessity but often as a lifestyle statement. What truly sets it apart is the blend of high customer expectations, rapid adoption of global trends and the willingness to embrace innovation, especially in digitalisation and mobility solutions. Moreover, the region’s dynamic demographics, including young, tech-savvy populations alongside long-standing brand-loyal customers, create a dual challenge and opportunity for automotive leaders. The pace of change here is exciting and it constantly pushes us to evolve and stay ahead of the curve.
As CEO of a group handling a wide range of brand dealerships, such as General Motors, Honda, GWM and GAC, how do you approach balancing global standards with local customer expectations?
Balancing global brand values with local expectations requires both discipline and empathy. Every brand we represent comes with its own DNA, but it is our responsibility to translate that DNA in a way that speaks to the local consumer. This means aligning showroom experiences, aftersales service and even marketing tone to match local culture, while still upholding the brand’s international standards. We also maintain close partnerships with our OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) to ensure a feedback loop, bringing local insights back to them and adapting their global strategies to fit our unique market realities. Flexibility and customer focus are key.
Bahrain is a smaller market compared to others in the region. What advantages or challenges does that present from a leadership and growth perspective?
Bahrain’s size is often its strength. The market is compact, agile
and deeply connected, which allows for faster decision-making and implementation. Customer feedback loops are shorter, which helps us react quickly and build strong brand loyalty. However, the challenge lies in scale. Volume targets, economies of scale and resources must be managed smartly. That is where innovation and efficiency become critical. It is about doing more with less, being highly customer-focussed and fostering strong community relationships. For leaders, Bahrain teaches you precision, adaptability and long-term thinking.
What was your very first car, and if you could drive any car in the world for a week, what would it be?
My first car was an Opel Corsa, and it holds a special place in my early professional journey. As for what I would like to drive for a week, I truly value experiencing the full range of vehicles we represent in our group. Each brand offers something unique and I believe it is important to stay connected to what our customers are experiencing on the road. I also have a keen interest in emerging technologies and new energy vehicles. The future of mobility is electric, connected and increasingly intelligent, so I make it a point to stay hands-on with those developments whenever possible.
When you're not thinking about cars or strategy, how do you unwind?
I believe strongly in the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise and staying physically active are my main ways to unwind. They help me stay mentally balanced and bring clarity to my business thinking. I consider wellness and discipline in daily routines essential for sustaining high performance, both personally and professionally. It’s about staying sharp, focussed and energised. ✤
From two decades of experience in luxury hotels and restaurants to being recognised as a Michelin-recommended chef in Istanbul in 2023, Bahadir Abul – Co-founder and Executive Chef of ORLA – shares his gastronomic journey, signature dish and ultimate guilty pleasure.
How have your early years at your great-grandfather’s restaurant influenced your style of cooking today?
Spending time at my great-grandfather’s restaurant shaped my entire philosophy as a chef. It was less about recipes and more about learning respect, discipline and the importance of seasonal ingredients. That early experience taught me to appreciate the honest, soulful side of cooking, which I now reinterpret through a modern lens at ORLA. The Aegean spirit of simplicity, warmth and community is at the heart of everything we do. It’s not just food – it’s a way of life, and I try to channel that authenticity into every dish we create.
You’ve worked alongside many Michelin-starred chefs. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received from one that you still follow today?
The most powerful advice I received from a Michelin-starred chef was, “True elegance lies in simplicity”. That one sentence changed everything for me. It taught me that food doesn’t need to be overcomplicated to be memorable. Respecting the ingredients, mastering technique and allowing flavours to speak for themselves are what creates lasting impressions. At ORLA, I focus on refining techniques and letting ingredients shine. It’s about balance, not excess – something that continues to guide my work every day, from menu development to plating and execution.
What is your signature dish at ORLA and what was the inspiration behind it?
If I had to choose just one, it would be our Crispy Manti. It’s a playful take on a traditional Turkish dumpling, reimagined with a crisp texture while staying true to its comforting roots. The dish balances rich flavours with refined presentation, combining slow-cooked beef, silky yoghurt and a spiced butter sauce. It’s a tribute to my heritage, elevated for the modern palate. Guests love it because it’s unexpected – familiar yet innovative. For me, it perfectly represents ORLA’s culinary identity: rooted in tradition, inspired by the Mediterranean and executed with creativity and care.
What’s your ultimate guilty pleasure food that people wouldn’t expect from a fine-dining chef and what’s your favourite spot to find it on the island?
My ultimate guilty pleasure is momos – Himalayan dumplings bursting with spice and flavour. You wouldn’t expect it from a finedining chef but they’re pure comfort for me. A Nepali colleague first introduced them, and I was hooked immediately. There’s a humble street spot in Manama that makes the best ones – tiny, no-frills but packed with flavour. They remind me that great food doesn’t always have to be complex. Sometimes, the most satisfying meals are found in the simplest corners, made with love and authenticity. That’s what keeps me going back. ✤
Liz
headed to the recently opened Brasero
to discover what all the fuss is about.
Since Brasero Atlántico opened its doors at Sheraton Bahrain Hotel a little over a month ago, social media has been abuzz with praise. I couldn’t wait to try it for myself and, I’ll say straight off, I was not disappointed.
Found, via a dedicated lift, on the hotel’s expansive rooftop, the place is one neat discovery after another, not the least of which is the ship-shaped bar and fully open kitchen that’s the first thing you see as you walk in.
Behind its counters, you’re met with a full team of busy, whitejacketed chefs from all corners of the Earth, under the watchful eye of Executive Chef James Martin, and a seriously impressive charcoal grill that looks like a giant fire pit burning brightly. An indication that here, meat is taken very seriously indeed.
Many of the exterior walls are glass, affording breathtaking views over the city’s glittering lights, while, on the internal walls, you’ll spot line drawn images of a sea monster – Brasero’s much-loved mascot. Certainly eye-catching and definitely a conversation point, General Manager Rodrigo Carvalho told us the restaurant’s whole ethos is built around the ocean and they wanted to honour that by creating their own sea creature.
In fact, the sea monster is so much a part of the team that it features on the plates and napkins (all in the delicate blue of the Argentinian flag) and there’s even an artist construct of a realistic, giant sea monster skeleton encased in glass on the terrace, both funky and atmospheric in the shadows of a windy evening –Jurassic Park anyone?
From industrial-style ceilings to a range of comfortable, plush seating and an extensive open cellar, it’s clear a great deal of thought has gone into the décor. And I was particularly happy to spot proper, old-school decks with a collection of vinyl behind the bar – you really can’t be too careful about your music which, on our visit, was a mix of laid-back contemporary and jazzy classics. They say it’s all about location, location, location. But I’d argue that atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere is equally important. On this, Brasero Atlántico delivers, in spades.
But, what’s a restaurant without food? And, after an extended tour, we were hungry and ready to dive into the selections suggested by Chef James and Rodrigo, all of which are served sharing style. First to the table are Las Empanadas Al Horno – a trio of traditional pastry parcels stuffed with ossobuco, Pascualina de Spinach with Bechamel and mackerel. The meat version is divine, the flesh slow-cooked for ultimate flavour and so tender it barely needs chewing, while still retaining every ounce of flavour. The pastry on the mackerel version is surprising, flakier and topped with sugar crystals, presenting an interesting contrast with the rich, slightly salty tang of the fish.
But the favourite at our table is definitely the classic Pascualina de Spinach, the pastry glistening before we cut in to reveal the centre of rich earthy greens delectably mixed with the light, sweet hints of ricotta. The pastry is crumbly and this feels like a real taste of home cooking.
The Melon & Cecina de Leon, smoked cured beef with honeydew and cantaloupe melon, is one of the night’s shining stars (though, it has serious competition). The beef is rich and toothsome with a depth of flavour and that has my dining companions fighting for the
last slice of an extremely generous portion. The melon is the perfect accompaniment but I really loved the bright green, oily pesto which added an extra dimension to the already sublime beef cuts.
Pizza Porteña is a Brasero signature, not surprising since it’s a cultural icon in Buenos Aires. The Fugazza version we were served boasted a rich, thick doughy base liberally topped with lashings of creamy mozzarella and loads of onions, an inclusion credited to Argentina’s history of immigration. Deeply comforting, this pizza is like a hug on a plate but, be warned, limit yourself if you’re planning to eat anything else on your visit, it really is a whole meal by itself.
A selection of pastas has been added since the opening and, though I’m slightly hesitant after a little too much of that wonderful pizza, Rodrigo assures me ‘this is not your average spaghetti Bolognese, you simply have to try it’. With a recommendation like that, how could I refuse?
He’s not wrong. The Homemade Corn Cappelleti with caramelised corn and chorizo are a revelation. Hat-shaped, stuffed pasta parcels bursting with creamy, herby goodness accompanied by glowing yellow kernels of corn and tasty morsels of lightly spicy sausage. The tastes and textures are a treat in the mouth and I honestly don’t want to share.
The Five Cheese and Truffle Ravioli is equally impressive, the al dente dough presenting the perfect foil to the creamy cheesy interior and the rich, pungency of the fungi. This brings to mind early mornings truffle hunting in the forest as a gentle mist rises.
I’m glad I took Rodrigo’s advice.
We finish our savoury selection with the Daily Catch, which is seabass, and, of course, a steak. Brasero Atlántico is determinedly not a steakhouse, that’s clear from the oceanic emphasis. But, you simply don’t visit Argentina without eating steak. It would be almost sinful!
I can honestly say, the seabass was one of the best I’ve tasted, and, given my job, that’s quite a claim. Delicately sweet, its skin perfectly crispy, the flesh was just cooked enough to stave off that slightly watery texture so common in the less meaty fish. Flaky and flavoursome, it was another contender for the night’s favourite dish.
And the steak, perhaps unsurprisingly, was sublime. Cooked to a uniform, perfect medium rare, the juices flowing gently, the mouthfeel was buttery and tender. The flavour spoke romantically of wide-open prairies; earthy, rich and savoury, while at the same time succulently sweet. Despite being fully replete, we were all powerless to resist and it was gone in minutes.
We tried two desserts. The Vigilante, a soft, crumbling cheese panna cotta with a centre of creamed sweet potato jelly, put on quite a show. Cut open at the table, it kind of resembled a boiled egg with a rich, yellow yolk but the piquancy of the sweet potato coupled with the texture of the panna cotta soon dispelled that myth.
Meanwhile, the Chocotorta – flexi chocolate mousse with dulce de leche ice cream and cocoa dust – proved, once again, that the dessert stomach is a thing. Richly dark, sweet with a hint of the bitterness that comes from high-grade chocolate, we couldn’t get enough.
From the décor to the music and from the attentive service to the amazing food, Brasero Atlántico more than lived up to the hype.
at The Art Hotel & Resort has long been a go-to for Italian in Amwaj Islands. Apple Sharma stopped by to see what’s new on the menu and found plenty to keep patrons coming back.
If you’ve lived in Amwaj long enough, chances are you’ve found yourself at The Art Hotel & Resort at least once – and likely more than that. Rosso, its Italian restaurant, has always been a local favourite of mine, so I was more than happy to try some of the new introductions to its already extensive menu.
The hotel itself impresses with its grand lobby, and as we headed to Rosso, my dining companions and I were greeted by the Italian red Vespa scooter parked outside. The entrance windows are lined with large glass vats holding various types of extra virgin olive oil and pastas, setting the scene for an authentic Italian evening.
As we entered, we were welcomed by the hotel’s Executive Sous Chef Mohammed Samaha and Restaurant Manager Mohanraj Paulraj, who ushered us to a table by the window. From there, we had a lovely view of the terrace and pool area next to the beach – a reminder that yes, we are still in Bahrain.
The restaurant’s grey-toned theme flows effortlessly throughout the interior, from the service countertops to the large stone slabs that make up the walls and flooring. Bright orange sofas add a pop of colour against grey-beige chairs and dark wooden tables decorated with real succulents blooming pretty red flowers. You can’t help but notice the large tins of olives and tomato soup or the oversized salt and pepper shakers that add a fun, quirky touch. At the centre of it all is the wood-fire oven, dishing out piping hot pizzas one after another, crafted by Chef Ananta Rijal, who also prepared our delicious dishes for the evening.
Our meal began with a large, crusty loaf of bread. Segmented into chunky wedges, it came with a bright green parsley verde, earthy olive tapenade and shards of Parmesan cheese, a perfect way to whet our appetites. The lovely Jennika, who looked after us throughout, surprised us with a choice of Homemade Italian Sodas, comprising Piedmont Cherry, Lemon & Mint and Passion Fruit & Orange – all three refreshingly flavourful.
First to arrive was the Burrata Trocolore – the gooey burrata cheese oozed its creamy goodness onto the bed of peppery rucola, accompanied by braised cherry tomatoes that provided a burst of sweetness on the palate, paired with syrupy balsamic cream. Next up, the Insalata Frutti Di Mare was beautifully presented, offering a medley of poached seafood, cherry tomatoes, orange segments and parsley. Originally served with avocado on the old menu, this dish has been given a new lease of life by replacing the avocado with orange – the citrusy element adding a delightful freshness and depth to the plate.
A classic Bresaola Carpaccio followed, with air-dried beef arranged over rucola, aged Parmesan and droplets of cold-pressed olive oil. It was simple yet flavourful – exactly what you want from a dish like this.
For the mains, we tried the Fusilli all’Arrabbiata with Prawns – a generous portion of pasta coated in a spicy tomato-based sauce. The prawns were cooked perfectly and the chilli flakes provided just the right amount of heat, balanced by sweet tomato, garlic and Italian parsley. It’s a familiar dish, done with care, and one you’d happily order again.
The classic Chicken Parmigiana was another hit on the
table – tender breaded chicken supreme topped with a bubbling layer of golden mozzarella, finished with a tangy marinara sauce. Served with a side of rucola and cherry tomato salad, it was satisfying in the way comfort food should be.
The standout, though, was the Sicilian Grilled Seafood Platter. Generous portions of charred calamari, baby octopus, hammour, jumbo prawns and a deliciously cooked Omani lobster were served with roasted potatoes, broccoli and a luscious lemon butter sauce that tied it all together. The lobster in particular was a crowd-pleaser – juicy, flavourful and well-marinated.
Vegetarians weren’t left out either. From the pizza oven, we excitedly sampled the Truffled Burrata – a thin crust pizza layered with tomato sauce, mozzarella, field mushrooms and fresh burrata, finished with Italian basil and the unmistakable touch of truffle. Rich but not over the top, the mushrooms added a lovely earthy tone, while the truffle aroma gave a subtle, luxurious taste. Ending on a sweet note, we wrapped up the meal with two desserts. The Torta al Cioccolato Pralinato was a decadent double chocolate praline crunch cake – dense but not heavy, with a satisfying mix of smooth chocolate ganache and the crispy wafer-like texture of the praline. It’s one for those who like their sweets rich. The Crème Brûlée, on the other hand, was lighter – a vanilla custard with a properly torched top of caramalised sugar that cracked under the slight tap of the spoon, just as it should. Smooth and silky, it offered the right balance of sweetness and caramel bitterness.
Rosso hasn’t lost its charm – and the new menu feels more like a
quiet evolution than a change of direction. It retains the warmth and comfort that’s always made it such a popular spot, but now with a few more reasons to return. ✤
Stepping into Rasmalai Balti Cuisine in Al Liwan is like entering a vibrant canvas, alive with the colours and textures of the Indian Subcontinent. The atmosphere hums with subtle Indian melodies, creating a symphony of visual and tactile delights. Handcarved wooden sculptures stand sentinel by the door, impressing with their vibrant, intricate details. The deep, textured charcoal walls serve as a dramatic backdrop for bursts of colour – miniature cabinets in hues of turquoise, saffron and ruby are arranged in playful, asymmetrical patterns, each a portal to a rich narrative. The carefully orchestrated lighting casts a warm glow, with Edison-style bulbs suspended like amber droplets, illuminating the textured walls and polished wood. Thoughtfully chosen furniture offers both comfort and style; leather banquettes, upholstered in rich fabrics, invite relaxation, while sleek modern chairs crafted from natural wood provide balance. Shelves lined with copper pots and hand-painted buckets speak to the restaurant's commitment to authenticity, while portraits on the walls reflect the stories of generations past.
As we settled in, our server for the day, Vishnu, greeted us with a warm smile, setting the tone for an evening of delightful discovery. The restaurant manager, Johnson, exuded hospitality, sharing insights about the menu with enthusiasm. Curious to understand more about the Balti cuisine concept, he began to explain its origins, flourishing in the UK during the 1980s and 1990s, particularly in Birmingham. The restaurant’s unique approach, especially the use of a special pot called a ‘balti’, sets it apart, infusing each dish with a delightful taste that is both
comforting and distinctive. The beauty of this cuisine lies in its adaptability, allowing recipes to cater to local palates and making the experience even more enjoyable.
Our culinary journey began with refreshing drinks - the Mango Lassi was a creamy blend of fresh yoghurt and luscious mangoes, a sweet and tangy treat that instantly transported us to sundrenched orchards. The Pomegranate Lassi, with its vibrant hues and refreshing burst of flavour, was a celebration of summer. Meanwhile, the Lemon Mint Juice, a perfect thirst quencher, combined fresh lemons and mint with a touch of sweetness, invigorating our senses.
As we awaited our starters, we were served Papadum Chips accompanied by a trio of mint chutney, pickled onion and spicy salsa. These delightful nibbles set the stage for the feast to come, teasing our taste buds with their vibrant flavours.
Our starters soon followed, each dish more heartwarming than the last. The Chargrilled Prawns Salad was a vivid medley of crisp lettuce, pomegranate, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, black olives and pita chips. Each bite was a refreshing reminder of summer days, a harmonious blend of textures and colours that delighted both the eye and the palate.
The Fried Fish Koliwada Style featured fish marinated in spices and fried to crispy perfection – a tangy, spicy delight that offered a comforting familiarity. The Aloo Kurkure, with its crispy pastry stuffed with spiced potatoes and peas, was irresistibly addictive, making it the perfect starter for my vegetarian friend.
As the main courses arrived, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation. The South Hall Lamb Shank Curry was a
revelation – tender lamb shank simmered in a rich blend of spices. The fragrant aroma enveloped us and with each mouthful, we experienced a warm embrace of flavours that felt like a hug from an old friend. Served with biryani rice and garnished with spicy ginger, fried onions and vibrant coriander, this dish was deeply satisfying and utterly heartwarming.
The Murgh Tikka Biryani, a signature dish, featured succulent marinated chicken layered with fragrant basmati rice and fresh herbs. Each bite was a celebration of textures and taste, from the soft, tender chicken to the aromatic rice. Accompanied by a side of raita, it was a comforting dish that spoke to the soul. It wouldn't be a complete Indian experience without indulging in Butter Chicken. Cooked to perfection at a medium spice level, it was accompanied by fragrant biryani rice that felt both comforting and satisfying.
For my vegetarian dining partner, the Paneer Tikka Masala was equally impressive. The melt-in-the-mouth chunks of chargrilled paneer swam in a spicy, flavourful gravy, with capsicum, ginger, onion and cashew nuts contributing to a symphony of taste that was both comforting and indulgent.
As we approached the end of our meal, we were treated to desserts that felt like the sweetest finale. The Saffron Rasmalai, garnished with pistachios, was a spongy delight – subtly sweet and refreshingly light, it offered a gentle conclusion to our culinary journey. The Carrot Halwa, served hot and cold with vanilla ice cream, was rich with the flavours of raisins, milk and cardamom – each spoonful a warm embrace that lingered on the palate.
Rasmalai Balti Cuisine is more than just a restaurant; it’s a heartfelt celebration of community and tradition. The warmth of the ambience, the attentiveness of the staff and the rich tapestry of flavours create an experience that resonates long after the last bite. Whether you’re a fan of Indian cuisine or a curious newcomer, this gem is a must-visit, promising not just a meal but a memorable journey through taste and culture.✤

Long considered one of the last true wildernesses, Greenland is suddenly a lot easier to get to – and people are starting to take notice. Nuuk, the capital, now has a brand-new international airport, with two more set
to open by 2026, giving this vast, icy land a new kind of accessibility. What hasn’t changed is Greenland itself –and that’s the magic. The world’s largest island still feels totally untouched. Nuuk itself is a small but colourful city that blends tradition with a growing creative scene – expect Inuit art, smart design and restaurants serving up popular musk ox, Arctic char (a common fish) and seaweed broth. But the real attraction lies beyond. From its towering icebergs and glassy fjords to its tundra plains and polar wildlife, Greenland has a front-row seat to some pretty epic landscapes. Whether you’re kayaking past blue glaciers, sailing through ice-choked bays, whale watching during the midnight sun or enjoying some of the best
heli-skiing in the world, Greenland has plenty to offer the adventurous traveller. Unlike Iceland, its better-known neighbour, Greenland remains refreshingly crowd-free. It still feels like a place few have really explored – and that’s exactly why it’s trending. So go now, before the rest of the world catches on!
If you’ve been looking for a reason to book that Japan trip, this is it. Expo 2025 kicked off in Osaka this April and runs right through to October, transforming Yumeshima Island into a futuristic wonderland of ideas, tech and international culture. But even without the expo buzz, Osaka’s always been a bit of a vibe with those in the know. It’s gritty, loud and endlessly fun – the kind of place where food is practically a religion and street life never sleeps. Try takoyaki (octopus balls) hot off the grill, okonomiyaki (a savoury pancake) or deep-fried, bite-sized meats and vegetable skewers at local kushikatsu joints. Neighbourhood-wise, Dotonbori is the heart of the action with neon signs, canal views and a sense of organised chaos that somehow works, while Shinsekai’s unique streetscapes and nostalgic atmosphere give off retro-cool, old-world Showa-era charm. Here, the iconic Tsutenkaku Tower is a must-see. Fancy something quieter? The trendy streets around the bohemian neighbourhood of Nakazakicho are made for slow strolls, vintage shopping and a visit to one of the many indie stores and organic cafés. Or head to Osaka Castle Park for a breather and a bento under the trees. Day trips to Kyoto or Nara are easy, but really, many end up ditching the itinerary altogether and staying local – thanks to Osaka’s infectious energy. With Expo 2025 shining a spotlight on its creative and cultural edge, Osaka’s set to be 2025’s mustvisit Japanese city. So come for the culture and stay for the midnight noodle runs (restaurants stay open late, some until early morning hours) and the people who’ll make you feel instantly at home.
It doesn’t get more otherworldly than this! Sitting well above the Arctic Circle (and known as the Arctic Capital), this small but lively city is the place to be this year if the Northern Lights are on your bucket list – and let’s be honest, they probably are. The solar activity is meant to be especially strong through 2025 and the best time to see the lights in Tromsø in July is during the darker hours of the night, despite the midnight sun (although, the most optimal time to see the surreal green-pink light show is September to March). But there’s more to this tiny Arctic city than just chasing the Aurora Borealis. With its snow-covered peaks and icy fjords, Tromsø has a quietly cool vibe that makes it a popular destination. Explore its compact and charming city centre filled with colourful wooden houses, cool little museums and a rich food scene offering sustainably sourced treats like boknafisk (semi-dried cod) and reindeer sirloin. Don’t forget to pop
into the stunningly modern Arctic Cathedral or warm up with locally roasted coffee and the famous cinnamon buns. There are plenty of ways to experience the beautiful wilderness too. You can try snowshoe hikes through silent forests, dog sledding, snowmobiling or just bundle up in a traditional Sami tent (called lavvu) with reinsdyr gryte (reindeer stew) by the fire. It’s also worth catching the views from the Fjellheisen cable car or booking a cosy cabin for some fireside stargazing. And if you're up for a winter dip (followed by a sauna, obviously), locals will tell you it’s the best way to feel properly alive. Despite its remote location, Tromsø feels open and welcoming and is easily accessible via direct flights from Oslo.
VANUATU
If you’re after a proper island escape and looking to switch off completely, Vanuatu should be on your 2025 travel radar. It's made Lonely Planet’s list of best places to travel in 2025 and once you land, you’ll get why. This beautiful South Pacific island nation is all unspoilt tropical forest, coral reefs
and that castaway feeling (in the best way). The vibe here is refreshingly simple: think palm-fringed beaches, junglecovered volcanoes, traditional villages and snorkelling spots, where you might be the only one in the water. On Efate, Vanuatu’s main island, you can explore blue holes at the popular Blue Lagoon, visit fresh produce markets and take in the laid-back capital, Port Vila. On Tanna, hike up to the edge of Mount Yasur, one of the world’s most accessible active volcanoes, and watch it spit lava into the night sky. There's also a big focus on sustainability – communities still live by traditional customs (referred to by the pidgin word kastom) and eco-tourism is thoughtfully woven into local life in a push to keep development low-impact. Forget crowded beaches or all-inclusive buffets – Vanuatu isn’t about five-star flash, it’s about raw experience and a gentler way of life. Accommodation ranges from simple thatched bungalows to off-grid eco-lodges, where the seafood is fresh and the wi-fi optional. For travellers tired of overdone hotspots, Vanuatu is the kind of place where time slows and your biggest decision is beach or waterfall. ✤

A re-release to mark the 41st Anniversary of the ultimate metal-rock parody that’s rightly gained a cult following. Sounds heavy but it’s billed as drama comedy.
Some great new sounds for you to check out this month.
By King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Almost unbelievably, this June release is the 27th studio album from the ridiculously prolific Aussie rockers – they put out five albums a year in both 2017 and 2022! Known for psychedelic rock rhythms and microtonal (betweenthe-keys) sounds, Phantom Island promises a new vulnerable reflection but we’re also treated to multiple genres from ‘70s-style soft rock to jazzy crooning. And the orchestral nature of some tracks is no surprise when you consider Chad Kelly, a Baroque specialist, was part of the project.

Released to coincide with the Brit singer’s self-organised Blud Fest – described as not ‘just a festival’ – it's a movement, a family and a space where individuality thrives – this fourth album from the Doncaster-born rocker is described by Kerrang! as ‘a go-getter of a record that pays homage to the greats whilst still feeling brand new’. The singer himself describes it as an attempt to make something classic and timeless – ‘wanting to build a world that would allow you to go on an adventure that would question the fundamentals of humanity, time, change, life, death and comprehend immortality. All I want to do is make people feel something!’ Big ambitions!

Born from the solo project of frontman Will Anderson, who created previous albums entirely alone, Raspberry Moon marks the collective’s first outing as a full band. More positive on the subjects of love and romance than Will Anderson’s earlier offerings, the man himself says it’s a product of the happiest relationship he’s had so far in his life. That’s demonstrated by the move away from the shoegaze feel of earlier releases to include some fizzing power-pop tracks and plenty of guitar-hero moments to keep the rockers happy.
Sly! Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)
By Sly Stone with Ben Greenman
A memoir from the legendary Sly Stone never seemed to be on the cards. Having created some of the most memorable anthems of the 1960s and 1970s (Everyday People, Family Affair), he spent decades in the throes of addiction.
Finally clean, he was able to relate the ups and downs and ins and outs of his amazing life before his death last month.
Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) is a vivid, gripping, sometimes terrifying and ultimately affirming tour through Sly’s life and career.

In a plot twist straight out of children’s cartoons, a burglar in full Scooby-Doo costume broke into a convenience store in Duncanville, Alabama. Yes, Scooby himself — ears, tail and the works. The canine-clad culprit triggered the alarm at 3.45am but fled the scene before police could arrive. According to the Tuscaloosa Police Department, he ran off with cash and coins… but took no snacks. Not even a Scooby Snack!
CCTV footage of the burglar has left the internet in stitches, with commenters asking whether Fred, Velma and the gang were waiting outside in the Mystery Machine. Others predicted the inevitable, that when they catch him, he’s going to say, ‘And I would’ve gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids!’. The investigation is ongoing. Police are asking anyone who can help unmask the villain to come forward, presumably before he changes his outfit.
Mish and Lucy, two four-year-old brown bears living at Wildwood Devon wildlife park in the UK, decided Monday was the perfect day for adventure and honey. The pair somehow escaped their enclosure and made a direct dash for the park’s food store, where they polished off a full seven-day supply of honey, plus various treats, before falling fast asleep. No danger to the public was reported, though visitors were quickly moved to a secure building ‘just in case’. The
pair were monitored by CCTV and staff throughout the hour-long escapade and eventually coaxed back using recall training. No tranquiliser needed. Wildwood later confirmed that an ‘operational error’ had led to the breakout. Police are investigating, while the park has promised stricter safety checks. It’s hard to stay mad though. The little ones were last seen snoozing peacefully, looking like they’d just pulled off the sweetest heist in history.
Zoom court hearings are already strange enough but things reached new heights in Detroit, USA, when a woman was booted from a live session for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Asja Outerbridge was attending a virtual hearing for a minor offence when she decided it was the right time to prepare lunch. With her robe on, the bread in hand and her sick three-year-old in the back, the multitasking mum was caught
mid-swipe of peanut butter on live stream. Judge Sean Perkins was not amused and promptly removed her from the call. The now-viral moment made its way to Instagram, where Asja discovered her unexpected courtroom cameo. She later admitted she could’ve handled things better, saying, ‘I was having a mommy day’. Poor woman, maybe the court will understand. After all, parenting waits for no-one.
